Tell me about your expectations of the setting. Is there anything that you want to include in our setting

1. Our school is called Astoria Academy of Arcane Arts.

2. Our school is located ______. (After answering this prompt, pause to very briefly discuss how this impacts the interaction of the school and the world outside of the school.)

3. The head of our school is named __________ and is best known for ______.
The Headmistress - A wise and powerful sorceress who seeks the players' help to investigate the strange events.

4. One of our favorite pastimes is a magical combination of ______ and ______. The school have a game where the players pilots small avatars through Capture-the-flag, stealth runs and other similar games. Those who cant pilot such an avatar enchant the playing field or enchant equipment for the avatars

5. A notable landmark in the school is ______. (Repeat as many times as you like. We suggest having at least two notable landmarks.)

6. One of the most unconventional classes we have at the school is ______. (Repeat as many times as you like. We suggest having at least two unconventional classes.)

What kind of world are we playing in Multi Public

Earth as we know it where magic is secret
A human world where magic is known
A world filled with classic magical creatures (Elvs, gnomes, orcs)
Oct 25, 2023 7:01 pm

What time era are we playing? Multi Public

18th century (Like Hogwards Legacy),
19th (like the Harry potter movies, before smartphones is a thing)?
20th (like our current time, with IT and tech. If so how does magic and tech interact

Hi hi! Cool for the invite.
I've read the book and it's simple enough to get it, but never played. So please forgive a few newbie mistakes.

Also, @runekyndig I can see the page you've labelled "This is just for my notes" not sure if that is the idea.

May I give a suggestion for

2. Our school is located ______. (After answering this prompt, pause to very briefly discuss how this impacts the interaction of the school and the world outside of the school.)

It all depends on if magic is secret or not. But if magic is secret, I could imagine the school being in a very remote place.
Like in a big magical underwater bubble on Atlantis. Or somewhere on south pole.

May I suggest a landmark?

A game students play (which isn't allowed by the way) is to take a bicycle and set it at the very top of the campanile.

Thank you for letting me join!!!
I have never played Kids on ??. I have skimmed the rules to get ideas but will start a deeper delve into it now.

I like this one minus the Piloting avatars. A magical game of Capture the Flag sounds fun...

Enchanted Artistry would teach students the magical art of bringing paintings and sculptures to life. Students would learn how to infuse their artwork with personality, movement, and even limited communication abilities.

BTW, I kind of like combing my idea with the example for the Headmistress. I agree that magic capture the flag minus the avatars sounds good

Oct 26, 2023 1:48 pm
This is a good time to mention that I've never played the game before either.

What about a small island off the USA.
Could be even in the middle of one of the Great Lakes.

I will change the school's name from Astoria Academy of Arcane Arts, to Avalon Academy of Arcane Arts.

The school, castle and grounds is on an island surrounded by mist. One must be ferried by a rowboat to find the island. Some left the shores of the Grate Lakes of America, while others left the shores of Ireland or Zebabwie. All had the same experience, they left the shores in a rowboat, sailed into the mists, and then the mist lifted the island of Avalon with its castle walls greeting them.

Island is located in the Bermuda Triangle.
Magical mishap over the years caused all the legends.

Love the misty Bermuda Triangle idea. You feel a sense of wonder and awe as the mist lifts and you are greeted by the school.

Before comitting further to this game, I'd like to ask something.

When it says 5 posts/week, how does that relate to the game speed?

What I am trying to say is, I can commit to a daily post. But I have found that games explode on GP.
You go of to work and when you return chatting to an NPC has suddenly changed to round 3 of combat or something.

Such events are quite draining my GP experience. So before committing to a game, I'd like to know if 5/week is a guideline of what we can expect or if it's more like flood-the-game-as-much-as-you-want-but-at-least-5-week.

Chloe says:

I'm very happy that you ask.
It means that I expect the general speed of the game to be one post pr 24-36 hours. Anything faster requires that everyone is in the same timezone - and we are not. I have tried being in a group of all east coast Americans and then me the European. Each night the game exploded in activity and I was left behind. That sucks and not at all fun.

The typical GP game speed is the 5 posts pr week frequency, where players and GM's make 1 post pr day, and then there is an odd slowdown during the weekend - or you had a super busy day and don't have time to post that day or something else came up. It all adds up to 5 posts pr week

And what questions do we want/need to do? I see a lot of different ones.

I don't want to get stuck in a 20 bullet point questionnaire. I'll might just call out for your input down the line. Like I discribe you haveing a magic class, and then I ask that one of you also tell us something about the teacher. We don't need it right now.

Hey gang, I didn't realize we already had an Evelyn in our party, so how about we retcon things and I change my name to 'Charlotte'?

Side note -- I got the Evelyn name from ChatGPT when I asked for a description.
Oct 30, 2023 12:59 pm
No worries and no need for me to retcon either.
I haven't used my characters name in my first post.

I just searched a bit on common Aussie first and last names and liked the sound of Evelyn Evans

Before we get into the dorm room descriptions and scenes, are we getting sorted into houses that match the banners we've seen? Seems like after any sorting we'll be in dorms specific to our house which would flavor the dorm description. Thoughts?
Nov 1, 2023 3:11 pm
I was wondering the same.
Nov 1, 2023 3:26 pm
My vision is that some students for a group for Mystwoods games. Currently there are 3 active groups.
These groups also functions as study groups or ferternities, and you will find that the groups have similar characteristica

There are also several other students that don't care about Mystwoods. Right now the serve as filler NPC so we can have a reasonable large school, but a small enough cast of characters
Nov 1, 2023 3:35 pm
Do we all need to be in the same team/fraternity?
Nov 1, 2023 4:45 pm
It would be the most convenient as you would be in the Mythwood games together, but it is not a requirement. I must add that it would be hard to get into one of the established groups
Nov 1, 2023 5:28 pm
So we need to form our own team/frat and come up with a name.

SPARKLING UNICORN!

Thoughts? I'm unclear on if this is a temporary room arrangement, or the 'this is your room for the year' type of situation.
Nov 2, 2023 6:11 pm
I was kind of thinking we (minus Bex) would all just bunk in the same dorm area.

I was seeing a large room split into 4ths. We all get our own little corner.

I thought about including Bex in it but I think that might be strange.

I have added a short rules reference, for your convenience.
As previously stated, if you haven't placed your stats yet, as you are still figuring out your character, then set the stats when you are going to use them. But once used they are set.

If we roll for a spell and roll +4 like your example can we shape the effect to add more DURATION OF EFFECT, or AREA OF EFFECT?

Can we cast something to be Instantaneous and you roll +3 over can you change it to be Day-Long +3?

Nope. I have added the table Guidelines for Success or Failure for Spell Checks

For a +4:
Quote:
The character casts the spell but not impressively. Sure, it works, but itโ€™s clear that the character put serious effort into making it succeed. The spell functions as expected.
For example, the caster turns their attention to the cup of tea and furrows their brow. They raise their wand steadily at the cup, murmur the correct incantations, and, as they hold the wand there, it takes a few moments for the tea to come to a boil. A few beads of sweat appear on their brow

A few more rules questions:

- Both the main stat die and the magic die are open ended and can explode (to use the Savage Worlds term here), right?

- When you roll for magic, you ADD the stat die and magic die results together (not taking the better die only), right?

- Outside of combat, players are the only ones who roll dice; NPCs and opponents and the GM doesn't really except in combat where you're doing opposed rolls?

What do you want the order of operations to be?

Players type up a magical effect we wish to happen.
DM gives us DC for roll and what ability to use.
Player rolls
DM explains what happens

Is that right?

According to the rules, yes... But since we are all adults, and this is PBP I would like to make a small ajustment for the sake of effenciy:

Players type up a magical effect we wish to happen.
Players look up to stat and target number
Player rolls
DM explains what happens

IF DM for some reason disagree with the player determined stat and target number, we will discuss it :)

And I assume that you will not edit the target number after seeing the roll

A perhaps simpler approach which players can control is if you go in and click the pencil 'Edit' button on your character sheet, and you can add any content you like to your character sheet. Easy thing is to do is to add content to the very bottom, e.g. screenshots of rule references and add images to the bottom of the character sheet. Or add links to the cheat sheet post.

Mulling over some of the rules -- I see that there is the possibility to target 'Permanent' as the duration of a spell. Under the 'Grit' description is says you can use Grit (p. 21) to cancel spells "Common spells include blocking your mind from being peered into, dispelling magic thatโ€™s already been cast, or healing someone who has been hurt."

So let's say a spell was cast with a Difficulty of 19. For the person who cast it to dispell that same spell, would the difficulty also be 19? And I wonder what the Difficulty would be for another person to dispell it (another wizard could have more experience with that specific spell so maybe their Difficulty is specific to them?

To recap: Someone have made a magical diagram under the table. It was activated while you were sitting around it. Creatures came through and caused chaos. They left after a little while. I left you time to duck under the table to look before a teacher came to whisked you away.

We have slowly added more and more of the rules into play and as they partake in the first two Mystwood challenges and we touched on the combat rules with one student now having a broken arm.
They need to find one more ring/token/flag and then return the the castle to win the Mystwood game, but now a portal has appeared again. That is where we are in the story
There are another team of students, their opponents, out in the forest, so a new player could be coming from there. Alternatively, it can be a student who has been stuck on the other side of that portal for some time now.

We are about halfway through the adventure that ChatGPT have outlined for me.

Note
We have laxed the typical PG-13 censorship, and the rule of thumb is if it can be shown in an American movie then it's allowed. So far it has extended to some nudity, as the headmaster is modelling for naked drawings (the saw some drawings), and one of the players had a revealing spell backfire and saw everything without its top layer. Bark on trees became invisible, and so did the clothes of her friends.
There are 2-3 Acts left, so we are halfway through. If we close the game, I will show that ChatGPT made for me, and share my thoughs on the overall story

I'll be closing this game this weekend, revealing the plot ect.

Unless convinced otherwise

That's too bad. I was really enjoying it. I was hoping you'd be able to pull in some new players

I just got laid off from work today so I can't really continue the game due to life stuff.

Below is that ChatGPT provide when I asked it to make me a plot

I added an Act0 just to get you introduced
Act 1, pretty much as it
Act 2, we had defined the game Mystwood, so that took us into the forest
Act 3, was about to begine as you would find an open portal that you could have entered if you wanted
Act 4, we had introduced some NCPs but I'm not sure that we had invested enough in them to have Rivalry and Betrayal
Act 5, would reveal that that the bad guy were opening portals to the school to steal artifacts and due to the schools protections, the portal location were a bit random. The marking under the table in the libary, was an attept to lock the portal down

Classroom Description:

The classroom is a spacious, well-lit, and welcoming space within the Astoria Academy of Arcane Arts. It is located on the second floor of the academy, overlooking the beautiful enchanted forest that surrounds the school. The room has high vaulted ceilings with intricate wooden beams, and the walls are adorned with tapestries depicting scenes of magical creatures and spellcasting. Tall arched windows on one side allow natural light to flood in, creating a warm and inspiring atmosphere.

The classroom is furnished with sturdy wooden desks and chairs, neatly arranged in rows to facilitate group discussions and interaction among the students. Each desk is equipped with an inkwell, quills, and parchment, ready for note-taking and spell practice. A large chalkboard spans one wall, and it is enchanted to move and display intricate magical diagrams and symbols when needed.

In one corner of the room, there is a magical whiteboard where the professor can display diagrams, spells, and notes using a special wand. The professor's lectern is centrally positioned at the front of the room, adorned with ancient spell books and mystical artifacts. A cozy fireplace on one side provides warmth during colder days, and there is a bookshelf filled with magical tomes and scrolls.

Subject Being Taught:

On this particular day, the classroom is hosting a class on "Elemental Conjuration." The students are engrossed in the lesson as Professor Thaddeus, a charismatic and experienced magic teacher, stands at the lectern. He is discussing the intricacies of conjuring elemental beings and the importance of understanding their unique attributes, strengths, and weaknesses.

The chalkboard displays intricate diagrams of elemental circles and symbols associated with the four primary elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Professor Thaddeus is explaining the rituals and incantations required to summon and control these elements, demonstrating the gestures and intonations necessary for a successful conjuration.

In the corner of the room, a controlled magical summoning circle has been drawn on the floor, where a small flame elemental dances under the professor's guidance. He emphasizes the need for precision and concentration when dealing with elemental magic, as well as the importance of respecting and cooperating with these powerful entities.

Throughout the lesson, students take notes and occasionally practice elemental gestures and incantations under the professor's watchful eye. The classroom resonates with a sense of wonder and excitement as students prepare to master the art of elemental conjuration in the magical world of Astoria Academy.

I'm not sure I would run a AI-generated plot again. Getting it to describe stuff was super helpful and sometimes inspiring me to add more details.
AI artwork is something I have grown very fond of

Thank you for playing, hope to see you in some other game. Hopefully somebody else will run a Kids On Brooms game

A question for all of you: What did you think about loosening the PG-13 rules? Allowing nudity and the like? I wasn't going for an erotic game, but I wanted a little more than usual.

I loved everything! I'd also like to take a stab at a Rivers of London game either using brooms rules or the official ones (which are chaosium if you haven't seen it). The AI bit was a little odd, but I enjoyed the atmosphere, though I think that may have been my enjoyment of the Rivers books. Thank you!

I loved everything, also. It was a interesting game for never playing anything like Kids on Brooms.
The PG-13 was fine I wouldn't mind a little more, just for kicks and giggles.

I use AI myself, so I understand the strangeness of it.

I liked the Brooms rules, though I can't claim to have mastered them. The PG-13 was fine. AI stuff was fine too I thought, especially the art which was really cool :-)
