Curing Eldergrove

@CurtFactor,@microtheMacroBear,@Stalker05 Continued from the Trials, Tribulation, and Treasure thread
A surge of energy temporarily blinds you. As you blink back your sight you see a dim, overgrown, and dilapidated chamber. You stand in the middle on this chamber on a square of tiles. A grey stone box covered in runic etchings encases black and white tiles that forms a checker pattern. You feel old traces of magic from the tile floor that hint of greater power. The tiles feel receptive to magical senses, as if awaiting a command.

https://i.imgur.com/fKwKz64l.jpg

The tile grid is the only relatively clear area in the room. Though no plants grow through it a few have tendrils that grew over it. However they have been shorn clearly though and are drying or healing over. The sound of a forest can be faintly heard outside. The only sounds you hear inside are the rustle of leaves and a few insects.

Though the plants now cover much of the room it looks fairly simple. The room is about twice as big as the tiles with several open doorways. A few rotting and crumbling doors partially fill a few of the doorways. Through one doorway you see sunlight streaming in through an arches.
Nov 10, 2023 8:21 am
The arcane spells used to transport them through the tiles again confused Vaun. He waited for a few moment to steady himself and then surveyed the room they were in. "So, this is Eldergrove? We have reached the city then?" He took out the folder given to them in the Expeditionary base and started to make a sketch of the room with the charcoal. "I wonder what we will discover here. Let us proceed with caution." Once the sketch was complete, he moved towards the closest door in the room and took a peek to the other side.
Nov 10, 2023 11:56 am
Barley shakes his head as he materializes on the tiles. He looks around eyes focusing on the ancient room choked with vegetation. He notices the writing on the grey stone box. Probably nothing major, but they should make a charcoal impression anyways. He turns towards Vaun and sees Vaun drawing something in the folder. It's a very good representation of this chamber. Vaun speaks aloud and then walks towards the sun speckled door.

"Vaun, not so quick. Hand me that folder and charcoal. We need to make rubbings of any writing we come across. If you wish to make architectural sketches, please take my parchment, pen, and ink. Your sketch is very good and more will be valuable. However, let's leave their paper for it's task." thinks Barley to Vaun fishing out his pen, ink, and parchment offering it to Vaun and holds out his hand for the portfolio and charcoal. "There's some writing on this grey stone, we should capture."

Barley glances at the box surrounding the tiles.

Upon further investigation you realize the black and white tile grid with the grey border is identical the the platform that send you here. You take a rubbing of a corner section, just in case and for comparison. As you do this the others look around the room and see one of the wall has some words carved into it behind some of the vines and plant leaves. The words are in the old "High" script that Vaun and Barley are familiar with. It says

Eldergrove Matrix Node / Craftsman's Burrogh
Nov 11, 2023 1:03 am
Rhidon takes a moment to look around in admiration, "It isn't exactly what I pictured, but it really is something.". He doesn't take too long though, as he wants to make sure they're alone before getting too comfortable.

While you two copy that down, I'll make sure we don't have any company. he thinks mentally to Vaun and Barley before he cautiously explores the room further.
OOC:
Agree on the medkit for Vaun, I think the crowbar makes sense for Rhidon.
Nov 11, 2023 6:09 am
Vaun turns to Barley and nods, "Yeah, you are right. This was given to us for the writing of the elven texts. I totally forgot." He gave the folder to Barley and took the parchment and pen. "You are right; we need to make a detailed catalogue of all the text. I would also like to have some pictorial representation of this place. It would help others back at the expeditionary base. Ah, so this looks like High script. It seems like teleportation magic and travelling node technology is present everywhere. Was this all crafted by mages from the city of Paphos?"

OOC: I can take the medikit but I also have a healing trait. So won't it be better if someone other than me carries it?
Nov 11, 2023 6:55 am
The room is fairly plain, other than the tiles on the floor. A couple of doors lead into the building interior gloom. Though you can tell there are windows in the other rooms the thick foliage blocks out most of the light. The looking down the connected corridors the building appears quite extensive. Walking a short ways down each you note that light spills into several of the rooms. You also find several staircases, two leading up and one down. (no sign of any creatures, or spider web). As you explore you occasionally hear a soft hissing noise but you can not isolate its source.

The air is thick with the smells of nature including a variety of pollens and the subtle scents of blooming flowers and damp earth. Standing there you feel a thick life energy of the natural world around you. As you explore the room you note that some of the plant seem to shift, but somehow never when you are watching. Still the leaves and vines shift and you suspect there will be stronger and larger plant guardians hidden within the ruins.

Moving off the cleared tiles you crunch across the leaf strewn floor down the hall and cautiously peer outside. You see tall trees, plant covered ruins of a large city. Though you hear forrest sounds, birds, wind in the leaves, insects buzzing, it all seems oddly muted. As you listen you feel oddly oppressed almost as if you are sad and don't know why.
Nov 11, 2023 11:47 am
"I agree, a pictorial study would be handy, Vaun. Rhidon, I maybe crazy, but be cautious. I think the plants are moving.", Barley thinks, opens the folder and closes his eyes.

A piece of parchment and charcoal floats from the folio and towards the high speach sign. The charcoal starts to rub on the back of the paper.

"A little trick I know, it only works on tiny objects. Thankfully parchment isn't that heavy."
OOC:
The trait says that tiny objects don't need a roll for telekinesis, and I'd rather not touch the vines.

I'll roll anyways if that's too many actions to take that impression. I don't want to bog down the adventure describing everytime evertime we need to get some writing, but this is an opportunity to try out something different in my trait :)

I'll take the health kit. Vaun can use the shovel.

"I wonder... is this plantlife the disease or the cure? There seems to be some movement for sure. I'm not sure how good my fists would fare against living vines, so we must definitely remain careful."

Rhidon reflects back on the stories told to him by the Ranger, and tries to find a place he can patiently observe the vines and plants. In an area with so much life, there is a lot of information to take in if you slow down and know where to look.

Vaun took the shovel that was handed to him and wore it on his back. He observed all the flora and fauna residing in this ruined city. Nature has truly claimed it, but there seems to be some hopeless aura emanating all across them. Is this the sickness the thief was talking about? He unsheathed his dagger that he picked up from the crypt; maybe it would help in cutting and unknotting the vines growing in the path. He felt the movement of the plants too. However, the spores and pollen of this lush, verdant flora can also be a cause of hallucinations. He looked around and started to observe if there was any dangerous vegetation that had a poisonous or hallucinatory effect.

Nov 12, 2023 5:29 pm
Most of the plants are common and easily recognizable. The odd thing is that they have grown in atypical ways. As you look about the room you note that most plants seem to be slowly moving away from you while others move to fill spaces emptied by the other plants. So they do not approach you but almost shuffle themselves around to keep specific plants closer to you and others further away.

Rhidon recall the ranger talking about how many dangerous environments while have methods to determine newcomers place. Probing attacks, observation, deliberately obvious but misleadings, all of these methods and more are often pitted against adventurers and other foreign entities. The ranger though it was interesting that even normal environments without any magical control or coherent overwatching consciousness had the same feel and effect. He cautioned against wanton destruction as you never knew how this might be interpreted by the local food chain.

Vaun nots that the plant growth is unusually diverse and prolific. Plants were blooming and had thick green leaves inside beyond the reach of most wind and sunshine. Though the air feels thick with an odd feeling he decides the air contains no more pollen and spores than he would expect with the abundance of plant life in the city.

The are is safe enough while you examine the room and you are left with two basic paths forwards. Head towards the daylight and the obvious path outside or explore the building further.
Nov 12, 2023 6:31 pm
The rubbing is done. Though the sunlight is nice, I have a feeling our path leads into darkness. Rhidon, Vaun, what say you? Rhidon cautions Vaun and Barley, Try not to harm any of the plantlife if you can help it. We don't know what this environment may consider a threat.

In response to Barley's suggestion he responds, I agree, better to approach the dark path when well rested.

Rhidon's intentions for now are to ensure there's no immediate dangers, and generally looking for things that stand out as "odd" in their environment as possible signs of "sickness".
Nov 12, 2023 11:06 pm
Other than the odd growth patterns and rapid stealthy shifts in position the plants are normal. Some look bigger than the ones you are familiar with but besides that they are normal, ish.
Nov 13, 2023 11:48 am
"I only detect small minds, most likely rodents or something akin to that. Malachi!", Barley thinks and his spirit familiar appears beside him.

"Go as far as you can into that darken way and check for traps, once back. Report, if there are no traps, I will follow.", he says to Malachi.

Barley takes out his torch, clicks his finger to produce a flame, then lights it.

"Might as well start, yeah?" he thinks to his companions.

Vaun nodded at Barley and Rhidon, "I agree; the dark path is probably the way forward. Maybe it leads to the heart, which we are supposed to cure from sickness." He raised his lantern in order to have a light source.

He looked at Malachi, "Ah, your familiar. It will be a great help to have Malachi scout ahead. We should proceed as well."
Nov 13, 2023 3:16 pm
OOC:
Out of combat Barley can relay things from his familiar
The familiar quietly moves down the darkened hallways. The wisp of light Barley created following reveals damp and dusty corridors and rooms. Malachi finds scraps of wood, dust, dried leaves, dirt, mischievous scraps of the virus former life, and mud. A set of stairs are found a ways down one of the halls and a set of stairs leading down in a side chamber of that range hall, you now assume to be the main hall. Malachi has to stay through the dark much of the time, as Barley's light can not leave his line of sight, but there is enough light to make out most rooms. Barley gets the sense this is either a private estate or public facility based on the buildings size and composition.
Nov 14, 2023 1:16 am
Rhidon would stay fairly close to Vaun, and proceed as well but look behind once in a while just to ensure no one sneaks up on them.

At one point he'd turn to Vaun and ask a few casual questions, "So Vaun, what kind of doctor are you? How long have you been travelling on your own?"
Nov 14, 2023 5:41 am
Vaun raised his lantern to see if there were any noteworthy things in the main hall. As he rummaged through the room, he heard Rhidon's question, "Ah, I have studied anatomy, medicine, and herbology at the Academy. I have always wanted to learn the intricacies of the body. The underlying mechanism by which we all function. How do we get sick? Why do we get sick? How a plant can give rise to something toxic and how you can turn it to your use. These knowledges fascinate me. So much to learn. How does magic work, and what happens when we don't have arcane help? I travelled with Garret, a good friend of mine who was a tinkerer. He made devices for me, which I used for my trade. Alas, I had to leave him when I came for these trials. Maybe we can meet again. Both of us were heading for the expeditionary base when we stumbled upon the crypt of the guardians." He sighed momentarily, then asked, "You two seem to know each other very well. Have you been adventuring together for long?"

Vaun would you care to follow me and take a look?"

Barley moves towards the mischievous scraps of the virus former life. As he does, he touch illuminates both stairwells.

"Looks like the only way is down. That side chamber calls to me.", Barley mutters as he walks towards Malachi's find. He pauses a moment at the top of the stairs and reaches out with his spirit. He proceeded to the place that Malachi indicated and then opened his bag to bring out a glass vial. He took out a piece of soft paper and a fork and started working on the location. After bringing out several glass vials and mixing liquids into the previous vial, he created a cloudy concoction. He soaked the paper in this fluid with the fork and then touched the area Malachi indicated. After rubbing the soaked paper on the area for some time, he picked it up and dropped it in the cloudy concoction, waiting to see the result. You wander the halls and corridors of the building finding noting of interest on the first and second floor. The plants have destroyed anything not made of stone or metal. Doorways hang open, rooms empties, windows covered by vines and leaves. The few hints form the buildings design hint at storage, office, and administrative spaces. Blornvid peeks though the vines out of the building and sees a sea of greenery beyond. The basement turns out ot be only large empty rooms.

The familiars discovery on the second floor turns out to be an odd growth taking up most of one room. The doors and windows have a variety of roots from a wide variety of plants. However all of the roots converge together into a gnarled mass with mushrooms sprouted from the top and three flowers that are two feet in diameter encircling the mass. The mass has no intellect or magical presence. However as you move around to examine it the flowers move slowly to follow your positions.
Nov 15, 2023 11:29 am
I agree, quite a bit of knowledge. Must have taken a lifetime to acquire, Barley thinks back to only Rhidon.

As they explore, Barley makes sure to take rubbings of any official looking text they find and pick up any paper that looks of note and isn't ruined.

He then circles back to the heavy mass of roots and examines the flowers. Waving his hand from side to side and watching them move.

"This couldn't be the heart could it? Vaun, once your done with examination, I'd like to probe it with a telekinetic pull. See if it does anything. Rhidon do you want a look before I tug on one of the flowers? I'd like to futher away from it before I do."

We need to look into it then. You sure can tug it from a safe distance. The Thief guardian told us that there is a sickness in this place. Well, if overgrown vegetation is the sickness, there should be a root from where all this is growing. Maybe the flower will be the answer."

The mass has no intellect or magical presence. As you explored the building Rhidon's glances outside through the obstructed windows leads him to believe you are at the edge of the city.

The windows are too obscures to get a good look and there are many trees . The one in your vision was much larger looking than those you have seen around you
Nov 16, 2023 5:31 am
As the building was mostly explored, Vaun looked at the way outside, leading to the vast expanse of green. "I believe we won't find anything here. Maybe the city is covered with green flora like a mattress, and the only way to find out anything about the heart would be to go and explore these wild ruins." He took a step and exited the building into the open area, observing the location for anything noteworthy.

OOC: Moving out of the building to the open area, what do we see?
Nov 16, 2023 11:21 am
Barley cautiously walks out of the building and scans the area. "We should look for a temple or church.", he thinks to the group reverting back to caution.

A crumbling city set into the forest and now overrun by it greets your searching gaze. Wide roads wander between massive trees that reach well over a hundred feet tall. Fountains have become ponds and thick vines have grown over most buildings. As your step outside you hear the rustling hissing sounds more clearly. The sound is nearly constant but it's source changes from moment to moment and comes from multiple directions at once making it hard to pinpoint.

To the east you see a tree rise above all the others. Barley stretches out his senses but only senses a strong sense of life, with a pulse, slow and calm. Localizing the pulse is not possible at this point.
Nov 16, 2023 7:37 pm
"Remarkable..." Rhidon says while taking in the sight before him. "If this is a disease of some kind, it is more powerful than I could imagine. I've heard of illness overtaking a body, but not a city. Not like this."

Looking at the pattern in the tiles, and the city around them, Rhidon tries to determine where the massive tree would be on the "map", or the building they just left from.

Vaun looked at the platform with excitement. "If I am not mistaken, this might be a map of Eldergrove. Assuming it is so, how do we figure out where we are? Fascinating representation; does the radiance of the words here also come from some sort of magic? Curiously, I can see four green and one yellow crystal here. One green seems to be the Grim Market, while another two are labelled Castle Ward and Brightring Ward. The one on the top right doesn't seem to have any label, as both Craftsman's Borough and Highsword Borough lack any crystals. So, does the yellow one represent our location? comparing the street layout and tree location, as that is the only distant landmark you have, you conclude you are located at the yellow marker. Based on that you will have to explore a bit of the city to verify the map and labels but it feels correct.
Nov 17, 2023 2:54 pm
Vaun scratched his chin. "This is interesting; assuming the yellow crystal shows our location, where do you want to go? Should we travel to the closest highlighted location? It seems to be Craftsman's Borough. I don't know whether it will have the heart of Eldergrove but we are unaware of what we might encounter." He started making a drawing of the map in his diary.

"In the body, the heart also helps move blood around. Paths of water can be similarly vital to a city. I suggest we travel to the tree in the middle, but check out the Borough first, and travel along the river." As Rhidon describes his plan, he points to the relevant areas on the map.

Making your way west towards the river you can tell the city has a more holistic approach to planning than most other stone cities you have been to. The Roads are built of large flat stones but there are stripts between them were grass and other plants can grow. The sides of the roads have small troughs lined with pebbles to catch runoff and drain it to the river. Most of the buildings only have stone on the first floor then after that they are shaped by twisting growing plants to accomodate the needs of the structure.

Suddenly you feel a shift underfoot as the ground collapses and opens to a deep pit lines with vines.
Everyone roll a save test. All dice are below 5 = you take 1 damage from the fall. Any 5 = you grab vines or other things to slow your fall. Any 6 = you Stay at the lip of the pit. 2 6's you totally avoid the trap.

Rhidon (when he rolls well lol) is a pretty good martial artist, and recently acquired the Seven League Boots from the Ranger which grant advantage on jump checks.

Given his training and the boots, would it be possible for Rhidon to sort of "wall jump" out of the pit with a couple rolls and then possibly lower the rope down?
Nov 21, 2023 10:10 pm
Vaun and Rhidon seem to have the same thought at the same time and both quickly try to get a rope up to Barley. Barley goes for Rhidon's rope and misses it then tries again with his power before noticing Vaun's rope to the side and grabbing that. As Barley struggles to get a good anchor to pull up his compatriots Vaun and Rhidon both feel a slight tingle in their now sodden feet. Looking down they see the leather of your boots flaking off as you scuff your feet nervously. Barley finally finds a place to brace his feet and calls down to the others to begin climbing up.

I need a save test, 2d6, from whomever remains behind while the other climbs up first. If the save test passes they can then climb out without problem. If the save test fails they must roll with disadvantage, 1d6, to climb out of the pit.

Vaun was horrified to see that his analysis was correct. This is indeed a giant carnivorous plant that has laid an excellent trap to entrap any creatures passing unaware through the location, and now it is secreting digestive juices that are dissolving their shoes, which will next dissolve their feet. He looked at Rhidon and said, "Climb up, my friend, and I will follow you. If we stay for long, we will be digested meat!"

Beruga sniffs the air and waddles towards the voices, at first out of curiosity, then with an increased pace as genuine concern kicks in.

EEEYAH! she exclaims, brushing past Barley. Grab this! and using her teeth, pulls the zipper on the left side of her harness to let down a third rope into the pit.

Having dealt with this kind of situation a surprising number of times before (due to her profession as a Sherpa), she calmly and expertly digs her claws into the dirt and anchors herself, waiting for the others to climb out.

Hello there! It's a good thing you came along when you did! Vaun and Rhidon were in a real situation!" Barley says to the friendly person in front of him.

"What's your name, friend? I'm Barley.", he adds as his hands get sniffed.

He can't help but smile at this new companion scurrying about.

Malachi startles for a second and turns mostly invisible before reforming back into a little black cat. He starts to circle and play chase with the newcomers haunches. As he paws at the excited being, his little kitty claws pass right through her. She does not feel a thing.

"Don't mind Malachi, he's my spirit companion. He can't really interact with the physical plane. Doesn't prevent him from trying. He likes you.
OOC:
Just in the nick of time! Yeah to not dying! Barley is a middle aged elf and Malachi is a spirit in the form of a little black kitty.
Nov 22, 2023 5:51 pm
Vaun wasn't expecting his saviour to be this big bear-like rodent creature. He was really surprised to see such agility in the quadruped and more fascinated by the concept of full sentience and vocal speech mastery. He spent sometime watching this being before realising how rude it was. "Ah, I apologise for my rudeness. My name is Vaun Kaiser and I am a doctor of sorts. My behaviour might erk you out, and I shouldn't have done that. My curiosity to study things sometimes gets the best of me. I am grateful for your timely arrival, or else I would have been digested to mulch by this enormous carnivorous plant that has excellently camouflaged itself, utilising every manner of adaptation to lay a perfect trap. How fascinating! But I must thank you for me and my companion's life."

You observe a man in a hooded, leather trenchcoat, wearing a beaked mask with goggles. His hands are covered in thick gloves, and he is carrying a leather bag filled with several things that are sometimes making clinking sounds.
Nov 23, 2023 1:03 am
Rhidon extends his hand to the rodent creature, unsure if it will shake it or not. "Thank you for the assistance back there, we are certainly in your debt. My name is Rhidon, and did you say a skeleton sent you? We were sent by a thief."

Rhidon is a middle-aged Dwarf with in simple clothes, travelling gear but no armor, and steel nunchucks at his side. He isn't quite sure what to make of the creature, but he's seen a lot of surprising things lately and has discovered it is best to just roll with it.
Nov 23, 2023 6:34 am
Beruga briefly jumps on her hind legs to shake Rhidon's hand, then runs in circles with Malachi a few times. Rudeness? Not at all! I understand your surprise at my appearance. We get visitors in our mountains from time to time who don't expect that we are able to speak.

You notice that Beruga is equally fascinated by the contents of Vaun's leather bag as Vaun is by Beruga herself. I don't know how far I traveled to get here. It happened in the blink of an eye, and it was through a Matrix Node. The skeleton I was with needed to stay behind, but he gave me this, saying it was a return address.

Rummaging around in her harness, she pulls out a charcol drawing on leather of a matrix node address.
https://i.imgur.com/WoZrebP.jpg

Anyways, I've never met city folk before. Could you show me around? This is all so fascinating!
Nov 24, 2023 8:41 am
Vaun observed the drawing with concentration, "Hmm, this looks like a map of some sort. Didn't the wizard back at the expeditionary base give us something that we could use to return? Something about using the matrix node? As far as I understand, there are specific tiles with magic that let you teleport to a specific location. We are exploring Eldergrove because we have a quest to cure the city and perhaps know more about these lost ruins."
Nov 24, 2023 1:01 pm
"Yes they did, and this looks similar, not the same, but similar to the tile arrangement they taught us. I bet this pattern will allow us to return you to you skeleton friend, Beruga. We're also not from here." Barley says as he gazes at the ruins.

He turns back to Beruga, "If you would like to join us on our mission, I for one would be grateful to have you"

"We are looking to cure the city of Eldergrove of some sort of affliction..." he gestures to the carnivorous pit they just escaped, "... and I have a feeling this sort of plant-life may have to do with that affliction."
Nov 25, 2023 6:28 am
As Rhidon explained, Vaun nodded and said, "It might be that somehow the flora of this place is somehow augmented with voracious growth. We have seen visions about the fall of this city and something about the heartwood chamber where the heart resides. We are told to cure the sickness from the heart. So, my guess is to find this heartwood chamber in these overgrown ruins."
Nov 26, 2023 9:45 pm

"Prehaps we should cut through the center of the craftsman borough. There are less buildings, but we keep the river to the North, offering a potential escape route if we get in too much trouble. Although, I don't wish to swim my way out of this city.", Barley says pointing at the map.
OOC:
I vote yellow, but I'm cool with whatever route.

Also, Malachi has a 50ft range. If he gets hit, he disappears and I lose 1 health, but Malachi can't be destroyed.

I think we should have him lead the pack in case of more traps. I'll take a little damage if he gets hurt, but hopefully we won't be caught by a pit trap again.

The Craftman's Burrough within the abandoned city of Eldergrove is a district where skilled elven artisans once plied their trade, crafting exquisite wares that adorned the city's inhabitants. Now, it stands frozen in time, an overgrown labyrinth of dilapidated workshops and half-finished sculptures. Vines wind their way around intricately carved pedestals, and the air is thick with the scent of ancient, petrified wood and the faint fragrance of flowers.

As the trio of adventurers ventures deeper into the Craftman's Burrough, they come across a plaza with the center filled by a massive triangular stele that is as large as most of the houses. It's three faces covered with a murals of various stypes of elven artisans. Many of the stelle featue's remains obscured, an incomplete masterpiece forever frozen in a moment of creation. Scattered around the statues on the plaza are several pedestals topped with half-finished sculptures, paintings, and other various works of art. Tools lie scattered as if the artisans vanished mid-work.

Suddenly, the atmosphere in the plaza shifts. Faint whispers echo through the air, carrying the voices of the long-gone artisans. A spectral figure materializes before the colossal stele, appearing as an elven artisan in the midst of sculpting. The ghostly figure gestures towards the unfinished works surrounding the plaza, beckoning to you and you get the uge to complete the unfinished cerations.

Barley cautiously adresses the spirit, resisting the urge to start working on another of the half finished peices.

Projecting his spirit in case the artisans language is too archaic for modern ears, Barley speaks, "What are you working on, sir? Where are your colleagues?"

Malachi looks puzzled as Barley starts forward.

Beruga curiously follows the others, not sure what this has to do with the mission they described to her. Then her eyes widen as she sees the spectral elf.

After being stricken with the sudden urge to pick up a nearby paint brush, she shakes herself off, then turns to look at the others. Hey! I don't think this is what we should be doing right now. Don't we need to get to that tree?

Barley nods at the elven spirit and then looks at the pillars and tools. He picks up a set and moves towards one of the pillars with half finished stone work.

He glances at Rhidon who is starting to work.

"Rhidon doesn't seem to be in any danger. If work is what you want, I suppose I could oblige, but what to build?", he thinks to himself then looks at the black steel triangle for any sort of clue what to build.

He examines the markings then starts to work.

Vaun started to look for some tools and an empty stone, which he started hammering, hoping to bring out some kind of shape, completely oblivious to what others were doing. He started chipping away with careful handling until he made a miniature-looking man in a sleeping position the size of his fist. Once satisfied, he looked at others who were working and suddenly realised that this was not their main objective. He snapped out of it and said, "Come on, everyone, this is not the time to build something! We need to find the Heartwood chamber."

Time passes and after some effort three items are finished. Two are wonderous to behold and contain all the grace and beauty of the other nearby already finished products. Vaun's creation causes a murmur to pass through the whispers as he finishes. Rhidon seems to struggle and the whispers fail to make sence half of the tim confusing him as much as helping him resulting in a less than wonderous result. Barley easily communes with the kindred spirits and is able to produce a items touched with magic in subtle ways so it nearly feels alive.

Beruga attempts to commune with the spirit, its mournful glances at the central tree conveys to her the spirit is aware of the trouble, but it's downcast head afterwards and the feeling of sorrow and loss is all she gets. Only when he stares at the three crafting their items does a spark of hope return.

As the items are completed the two well crafted items glow brightly and you see two spirits step into the light out of thin air, grab the item and fade into nothing as they smile. A whisp of the light flits to Vaun and Barley landing on their right hand leaving a small mark. The original specter bows low to all three that moved to craft items and fades as well leaving 3 small tokens that glow green and fly to the hands of Rhidon, Vaun, and Barley affixing themselves to you left shoulder. As the ghost fades you feel knowledge of the rewards enter your minds though you do not fully understand them.

Vaun wasn't expecting the spirits to give him a magical boon. Perhaps it was really important in helping and exploring the sections of the city through and through. He watched the tattoo appear on his arm and marvelled at it. It was some kind of arcane art that he needed to study more about. Once everything went back to normal, he gave one of the tokens to Rhidon and said, "This is interesting; may be we should interact more with the spirits here to know more? Here, take this token, my friend. We need to find one for you too, Beruga. Let's proceed with the path we planned before to reach our next destination."

Barley spies a tangled mass of vines and straps of some kind. Wit a firm tug he pulls the mass free and tosses it over the gnomish creature. Together with Beruga's rope and the vines and straps you manage to bind the creature that struggles ineffectually. The room has no other occupants. A passage leeds deeper into the building but no other sounds of anything moving, save the hissing scaping of the plants, can be heard.

The creature fails to react to the badges or Barleys telepathic message. Vaunt and Barley compare notes and determine the thing to be alive but something happened to the gnome. It is now infested with plant growth, that sealed it wound and covered much of its skin. As they confer Barley suspects the gnomes mind may partially intact or simply suppressed by the plant.

Infested Gnome
Dec 3, 2023 8:14 pm
While the others study the gnome, Rhidon takes a quick look around to ensure there's no chance of another sneaking up on them.

Then, turning to Beruga says "Thanks for the help back there, I worry what a scratch from that thing might do..."
Dec 4, 2023 5:34 am
Vaun scratched his chin and said, "This is interesting. Another flora is inhabiting the body of the gnome and seemingly taking over it's body functions. Both of them exist together, but plant life has taken over and exerted itself. A sort of parasitism, if we can get rid of the plant, perhaps we might save the gnome. Would you want to try it, though?"
Dec 4, 2023 9:24 am
What would be the best way to kill the parasite? It must be something lethal to plants but not to gnome kind. But most afflictions I can think of do the opposite... Beruga's mind briefly wanders to ants and other insects and she shudders. Or maybe some sort of magic blocker if it is arcane in nature!
Dec 4, 2023 11:46 am
"This is a long shot, but Vaun. What do you think would happen if we applied fire to the part of the growth outside the gnomes skin, close to it's source. We should be careful not to burn the gnome. Do you think the vine might pull away?", Barley asks.
Dec 4, 2023 2:13 pm
Vaun pondered the question, "Good thinking, but we don't know how much it has gone inside the body and how much it has spread. We can perhaps try a heated blade? Singe the plant growth and see if it pulls out. We can also maybe cauterize the wound and cut the connection from outside. But if it is still alive and spread inside, we might have to make a difficult and complex surgery to remove the infected areas. Let me see." He examined the gnome from outside and poked and prodded with his dagger tracing the injury and plant infection.

Vaun believes the gnome can be freed of the plant. Much of the plant seems to be beneficial to the gnome, helping to close the wound and keep it alive without food, but it also seems to have a negative effect on the gnomes mind or spirit. If the plant is directly affecting the gnomes mind or soul then trying to remove it may cause extreme pain or even kill the gnome.

Vaun and Barley confer and decide the best approach would to be to have Beruga and Rhidon hold the creature still while Barley attempts to operate under Vaun's guidance. The elfs mental abilities allow him to differentiate the two life forces of the gnome and plant now that he has studied it. Interestingly Beruga's nose can also detect dual scents of gnome and plant from the creature. While Barley works with the blade he will monitor its mind and Vaun will oversee and channel his healing magic into the gnome in an attempt to help it recover and help fight off the invasive plant.

Let me know if there are any additions you can think of .

Vaun proceeded to guide Barley with the delicate surgery. He collected bottles of odd turbid fluid along with a very polished wooden mahogany box from his leather bag. From inside he brought out a fine miniature cylindrical tube like contraption with a very sharp needle. He uncorked a vial and drew a mysterious thick viscous crimson fluid and filled the contraption with it. "Okay, so you use the dagger and give a sharp line cut from here to here. You then trace the cut and start unwrapping the flesh and moving it to the side." As the operation progressed, He jabbed the needle at the neck of the gnome and injected the fluid directly inside the skin. "Blood tincture is given with mild anaesthetic. This will calm the body muscles." He guided Barley about how to fine cut the entanglement and remove the foreign plant anchors in the flesh. Finally he brought out a needle and thread, dipped it in one of the turbid vials and passed it to Barley, "You stitch the wound by passing the needle inside while holding the knot up and closing the thread. Yes, just like that. You have a nice hand at this, Master Barley." Finally, he brought out another vial of green viscous fluid which he filled inside his injector and then administered it again to the gnome's body.

"I think, we have done what we can. Let's hope this finally severs the parasitic connection and hopefully cures this gnome", Vaun exhaled once the surgery was done.

The process takes many minutes and the biggest problem ends up being Rhidons squeamishness about touching the thrashing fellow as the gnome and plant interface causes the thing to react violently. Luckily Vaun and Barley are able to safely extricate the majority of the invasive plant and use their ability to flush out the tiny remnants and heal the residual damage.

At the end of the procedure Barley, Vaun, and the gnome are all exhausted as Barley hold the still living and slowly writhing mass of vegetation. Rhidon and Beruga refused to "hold it out of the way".

However Barley and Vaun can both tell that though they have "cured"the gnome of the plants invasive presence he is still dying beyond what they can do. Vaun estimates the gnome has a couple hours to a couple of days.

Gnome
After resting a few minutes he regains consciousness and looks around in confusion Thank you for releasing me he faintly whispers. Glancing around he sighs The Treeheart tried to save me but it can only do so much without the direction of a Mortal Warden. Are they all dead, or like me? The rest of Eldergrove's people? he asks with an intense look of sorrow in his tired eyes.
Dec 6, 2023 6:09 am
Vaun came close to the gnome and helped him lie down on the floor. As the realisation dawned in him that the gnome was alive because of the plant parasitism, it saddened him.

He spoke mentally, "Master Barley, the plant parasite was keeping this gnome alive even though it was overtaking it's mind and soul. We may have freed the gnome, but we have robbed him of life force and sustenance. We are indirectly responsible for his death."

Vaun calmly said, "Don't strain yourself, good sir. What is this Treeheart that you mention? Is it the heart of Eldergrove? A long time has passed, and we see Eldergrove in ruins, taken over by nature. Was there a Mortal Warden? Unfortunately, we haven't met any people from Eldergrove while exploring your city."

He spoke mentally to everyone, "Unfortunately he will slowly die and I don't know if it will be painful. However, I have something that will induce a deep coma by painlessly euthanizing him. What do you want me to do?"

"It is the gnome's choice. If you need help. I can give him a vision of a happier time before we send him to greener hills." Barley thinks directly to Vaun.

He bows his head and gets down on one knee so he is level with the gnome.

"Don't strain yourself, good sir. What is this Treeheart that you mention? Is it the heart of Eldergrove? A long time has passed, and we see Eldergrove in ruins, taken over by nature. Was there a Mortal Warden? Unfortunately, we haven't met any people from Eldergrove while exploring your city."
The Treeheart is the keystone of the city. It is what allows us to live in and with nature without having to harm it to shape it as it shapes us. The wardens ar e the keepers of the Heart. Their leader is a great druid that found and polished the heart to help it allow us into it's embrace.
Barley says:
"Sir, my friend speaks true. You are the only one we have encountered while exploring the city. The city itself has been recently rediscover. It is overcome with unnatural vine growth and vegetation. What happened to you that you needed saved?"
The city was under attack by the Immortal warriors. I had been severely wounded and applied a seed of life to the wound as I could not find a healer and the chaos of the attack caused the others to flee without me. The seed should only have bound the wound till a healer could help me but as I was getting ready to flee with the others it suddenly pulsed and began growing much bigger. It then gets all jumbled and you were pulling the seed from me.

It seems something has happened to the Treeheart to cause all of this. Do not hurt it, it does not really understand people. That is why Artenia Lien called the wardens to look over it and help teach it. Something must have frightened it to cause it to so far step beyond the teachings of the wardens.

Artenia Lien is ancient and learned. She founded Eldergrove with others and has always been benevolent and wise. cough . . . cough However she passed some years before the attack. Several of the wardens were her students but none had her gifts or power. All were selected for their peaceful disposition and harmony with nature. I can think of no reason why any would do this to our city. Perhaps they were slain and the Immortals corrupted the Treehear? The topic of one of the cities guardians being a traitor obviously disturbs the old gnome and uncertainty and sorrow fill his face and eyes.
Dec 7, 2023 1:28 pm
"Would all of the wardens have been present at the heart when whatever happened happened? Do you know if they worked in shifts?", Barley asks the Gnome.

"There maybe a chance one may have escaped or was far enough away they are un a similar condition to this person. We might be able to free one of their minds long enough to teach us how to communicate with the Tree Heart.", he thinks to his entire group.

I do not know their inner working, but they do not all stay with the heart. I've seen some out and about but only ever seen all of them when they bring out the Treeheart for ceremonies. I think only one or two would be on hand?

Mostly the Treeheart just IS. It rarely does things so either a Warden prompted it or it acted on its own. It isn't really alive but it sort of is. Artenia Lien and the wardens were teaching it. And as part of the city and forrest it feels what happens and reacts as a plant or animal. The Immortal attack would likely have scared it. Especially without a warden to comfort it.
The long conversation tires the gnome and he falls asleep, breathing peacefully and a slight smile creases his lips but a tear falls out of the corner of one eye.
Dec 7, 2023 2:40 pm
Vaun listened to the entire conversation and then spoke, "I think we have to explore more and try to find out where this Treeheart is. Master Barley can talk through telepathy and can try to communicate with this Treeheart? We need to find out more about this; maybe there will be more information in Eldergrove. A library perhaps?" He then looked down at the Gnome, "What will you do with him?"
Dec 8, 2023 5:13 am
I don't know if it is safer for him to stay here and rest, or travel on my back with us to seek out a warden. Beruga said. I have never met an Immortal, but if their name is to be believed, then they could be in this city, and more than likely close to the tree heart. If they did in fact cause this, then I presume they would be less than friendly to meet. Still, I don't see any other choice. We need answers, and all our leads are pointing forward. Vaun Kaiser, what is your medical opinion of the Gnome. Is it safe for him to travel?
Dec 8, 2023 6:19 am
Vaun wanted to give an easy answer to this, but there was none. "Actually, my diagnosis indicates that he will eventually perish. Maybe in a day or even in hours. His body was meant to wither away, but the parasitic plant life kept him alive. Unfortunately, at this moment, my skills are not competent enough, and I have done what I can. Beyond this, only the arcane arts will probably work. I think we can carry him, but he will ultimately die."
Dec 8, 2023 9:51 am
Beruga's ears drop behind her head as she digests the somber news. Well, if there is no way to save him... I don't think he would want to wake up alone. Would you mind helping me lift him?

Beruga tries her best to situate the fallen Gnome in the most comfortable position on her back, then secures its limbs with some utility straps on her harness usually reserved for extra luggage but can also come in handy during mountain rescues.
OOC:
When the group is ready to move on, Beruga will follow the pack by ~15ft to avoid springing any traps on her frail companion. Psybermagi, let me know if Beruga suffers any encumbrance effects.
Dec 8, 2023 2:25 pm
"That is a sound plan, Beruga. I can try to talk to it if it's willing. However, my attempts to reach the intelligence behind these plants have been less than stellar. I think we should try to find a temple or library. What does everyone think? Rhidon, what say you?"

"Malachi, please keep our gnome friend company."

Malachi chirrups, circles Barley's legs and then jumps on top of the gnome. Barley smiles as he watches the little spirit pretend to have weight.
Dec 8, 2023 2:34 pm
As you move to lift the gnome a slight chill runs down all of your backs as the vines and branches that permeate the entire city lift the gnome halfway up so that you can easily grab him. Pausing only a moment, to ensure they do nothing else, you take the gnome and the plant life returns to its former state as if it never happened. A bit confused at the "helpful?" plants you quickly position the gnome and Beruga's harness to secure him in place. Beruga is comforted by the warmth of the little body and it steady breathing on her back.

Making your way back outside you head towards the massive tree. The plants seem oddly still and the hissing rutle of plant movement is only heard in the distance. You pass a couple of blocks and are almost to the tree when you come upon an intersection with a tile mosaic of arcane patterns. On a nearby wall to the north someone has scrawled "Riffin Hane fell here, his sword sundered" in what look to be scorch marks from flame.

As you look over the scene you hear a scrabbling noise, first from one of the nearby houses, then from another on the other side of the way. Looking around you note that the plants covering these buildings are mostly dead and dry with only a few small plants showing any green. Then you see a small head poke through a window, and another other there, and another. You are surrounded.

Ok, clearly there are sentient plants in this area that approve of our cause. And I don't think these things are friendly with the plants. Barley's telekinesis is not strong enough to move anything heavier than he can easily manipulate with a single hand. He might be able to cause some of the thinner vines to crate a small net but not enough to trapp all of the things.
Though the plant life of this area is oddly withered the buildings are still of good quality. You look around a know you are surrounded but have options of flight, or possibly taking shelter in one of the buildings with fewer windows and door so they can not come at you form all sides.

Optional Advanced Rules

Critical Success :
Any time two or more 6's are roll rolled on any test the results exceed basic results. Damage is increased or another beneficial effect will be added by the GM.

Armor Proficiency
Medium armor with Proficiency (a new Proficiency option) allows you to negate the first point of damage from each conflict. Heavy armor with Mastery, requires medium Arnett proficiency, allows you to negate the first 2 points of damage from each conflict.

Vaun thought that they were getting the upper hand as they continued to attack and disintegrate the demons. However, the remaining one suddenly got healed by the thick black cloud and transformed to renew it's pummeling attack with four arms on everyone. Vaun got hit by the fist and reeled from the blow, but from the corner of his eye, he noticed how badly Beruga was injured. He took out one of his injector contraption filled with red-colored viscous, sloshing fluid and jabbed it into Beruga's body, injecting the entire fluid. "My friend, you are injured but this will heal you up. It pricks a little, but don't worry; you will feel better in no time."

He then grabbed his dagger and renewed his attack on the transformed demon.

Per the BTB rules, when you hit 0 hp (and you can't go below zero) you get up to two Save Tests; one Standard, one at Disadvantage. If you make either, you pop back to 1 hp. Fail both and you're dead.

That's the book. Psybermagi made do it differently here.

Nope, no custom rules on death. No one has gotten close in my game yet and I forgot the save test
Rules says:

Unconscious & Death
+ If you are reduced to 0 HP you are knocked unconscious and are dying
+ If you are dying, then roll a Save Test each round with a success stabilizing you. The first round is a standard Save Test. The second round is at disadvantage. On the third round you die.
+ Nearby characters can also roll a Test to stabilize you before you die.
+ If you die you can be revived by magic with great diet and cost.

I assume with Vaun in the group he will heal anyone in need outside of combat so I ignored the damage from the pit.
Remember to evade dame you declare it before the attack the roll 1d6 for each attack that hits.
Ex Rnd 1 Bob attacks and Evades, goblin attacks and hits, Bob evades 1d6=5 and takes nodamage. Troll attacks and hits bob, Bob tries to evade 1d6=3 but fails to avoid damage.

In play by post if you want to roll Evation when you declare it that is fine with me, but you must declare the evade action before the enemies attack action. Using a Shield with the Shield Bearer trait allows evade with 2d6 as do some special abilities or spells.

To clarify,
Quote:
In play by post if you want to roll Evation when you declare it that is fine with me, but you must declare the evade action before the enemies attack action.
. Does this mean we must anticipate an enemies attack before we roll evasion or we must roll before the next round. Example: Barley thinks a demon is coming for him, so he rolls evade and then a hit even though the monster might not attack him specifically. Or does it work like what is happening now: Monster swings at Barley, he can evade, but he must do so before next round? I'm attacking twice this turn, but this would be a good place to evade. I am hoping for good rolls!
Edit: I didn't realize evade was 1d6. I would say I used my martial artist trait for the last evade because I rolled two d6
Barley takes a heavy blow to his face and stumbles backwards. He looks the imp in it's gleaming eyes and furrows his bow. He jukes then sends two psychic bolts towards the fiend.

Basically yes, you must anticipate the attack. Whether you roll the 1d6 when you declare it or roll it later does not matter. I ignore your Evade rolls, as much as I can, and if you roll an Evade=5 and the NPC attack hits then it is really a miss.
Declaring an Evade action indicates you are putting effort into dodging and blocking attacks for the next round.

When you choose to Evade, until the start of your next turn, you can Test 1d6 when you are successfully hit by an enemy. If your Test is successful, you evade the attack and do not take damage.

FYI, blocking for others is actually harder than evading for yourself. I like the idea and you are free to keep doing it but there is a trait that lets you do it. If you guys want to keep trying it I will come up with a formal definition of how it works
You rain down attacks on the demons and it succumbs to your assault exploding into a massive cloud. The dark vapors waft around for a while and begin to disperse further and further but not quite vanishing. You get the feeling it will eventually reconstitute itself into imps but for now it is not a problem.

Vaun spends a few moments healing all of your injuries as you watch the demonic vapors dissipate.

The fight, with all the running, floating, jumping, and what not worsened his condition. Vaun does what he can for the man but the healing magic only seems to ease his pain at this point as his life force ebs slowly away. Vaun thinks he now has less than an hour to live.
Dec 21, 2023 5:53 am

The fight with the four armed demonic Glabrezu was very hard for everyone, but now they have to make a decision on the dying gnome. Also, the prospect of finding the Treeheart loomed on the horizon as the party started to get ready to move out in search of the heart of Eldergrove.

The massive central tree is a few blocks from your current location and can be reached in a few minutes. The base of the tree is entwined with a large structure with many windows and doors leading in and out of it. The air around you feels oddly thick. Not dangerous but full of pressure and attention. Like pushing through a warm and comfortable blanket but unknown hands push back gently but with increasing force as you near the tree. https://i.imgur.com/TLXSPB8l.png ------------------

Rhidon thinks to the group, Let's take him to the Treeheart as he asks, but I wouldn't want to put him through any additional stress. Maybe Barley and I should scout ahead about a block at a time, ensure that there are no other surprises. Vaun and Beruga can follow with the gnome when we mentally signal that the coast is clear.
Dec 22, 2023 5:31 am
Vaun nodded at Rhidon. "I think that is a nice idea, Master Rhidon. You two are more capable in close-quarter fights, and you are far faster than me. Since Beruga is carrying our gnome, we should follow your lead. But we must also hurry; the condition is deteriorating for our gnome. Let's proceed swiftly but cautiously."

Vaun watched in awe at the tree building, astonished at it's splendour and size. This is fascinating! An entire building within a living tree with caverns and floors. So Treeheart is inside this? He listened to the gnome and sighed. So it has finally come to an end, he thought. It was a sad affair for him to see that someone he had treated wouldn't survive. He always felt sorry for all the patients who died back in the Academy.

Vaun focused on the tree building and said to everyone, "Maybe Barley can send his spirit familiar to scout ahead and find out which one leads to the upper floors?"

"I got this trinket from an eccentric artificer. It will come to life upon whispering a magic word. I have the gift of languages, prehaps we could use this to scout ahead and return to us or start to sing so we can follow it's voice?

Before we enter, you should know. There's something...different about that pool. It maybe nothing, it maybe something. We should check it in case it holds a clue to the malady of this city. However, our friend's time is limited and we have to honor his request."
, Barley says observing the pool.
OOC:
Is the pool visibly unusual from the outside at all? Malachi only have a 50ft. range based around Barley. Any futher and he disappears, but I have this magical golden finch. Maybe we could use it to find the tree heart then lead it to us?

The landscaping around the pool is crafted to form a natural barrier so it can easily be seen but difficult to approach. Immediately around the pool the regular flagstones transition to blue stone or ceramic tile.
The base of the tree and its entwined building is well over 200 feet wide at it's base. There are 4 entrances that you see easily from the west side of the Tree and 2 on the south side.

Vaun nodded at Barley and said, "That trinket will be a good help in this situation. There seem to be six entrances; however, it seems difficult to gauge which one will lead to the upper floors. Should we try one from the south and one from the west? You can send your companion through the west entrance and the trinket from the south."

At the mention of pool, Vaun looked at it and said, "I can try to understand if there is something wrong with the pool." He took out an empty flask and went to scoop out some water. He then added some other concoctions to it and waited to see any change.

Vaun is a scholar so can use 3d6 for rolls he is familiar with due to his education. Examining the pool for example and recalling your lessons in natural history counts as an academic endeavor.
As Vaun examines the water he notices that the magic within it fades as soon as it is removed from the pool. This is common in natural magic and he determines that the effects likely take place only when bathing in it or drinking directly from it.

Does it seem like anyone is going in or out of the tree? We're sort of in the middle of the city right, is it busy at all or has it been basically deserted since the imps?
Dec 26, 2023 4:01 am
The city has likely been deserted for decades. You have not seen any signs of any groups within the city. Individuals or small groups like yours may have come and gone or still be here but given the size of the city outfit would pair time to find any such.

The massive tree structure appears as abandoned as the rest of the city it rests in the middle of. The sound of wildlife you heard at the edge of the city have all but vanished leaving only the wind and hiding rustle of the plants. The stillness and lack of any creatures near the tree make it feel oddly foreboding.

Vaun recalls that there are a variety of magical pools. Healing springs and love pools are the most widespread legends but there are others that are tied to elemental plains, the fey, reversing aging, and more. Command sounds more like one tied to beasts, fey, or spirits of some kind.
Dec 27, 2023 1:26 pm
"Let me try. If something bad happens, hopefully your healing magic will work.", Barley says and dives into the clear water.
Dec 27, 2023 4:49 pm
As Barley enters the water and surfaces the splash and ripple are odd. It takes you a moment to realize that the splash caused not even a drop to leave the pool. The water moved up and around from his entrance but none of it left contact with the pool. The ripples cause a larger and larger undulation and as Barley surfaces you see the entire pool raise up with Barley "surfacing" now well above ground level.

The moving mass of water resembles stories of Water Elementals. Not evil but simply a force of power and the element that can be very powerful and destructive under the command of an evil mage or aid ships and construction under the control of benevolent ones. Wild ones are unpredictable as their thoughts are nearly impossible to understand.

Barley floats in the magical water surrounding him. Oddly, he can breathe normally.

He stares at the creature that engulfed him and thinks only to his companions, "It's not dangerous. It wants us to speak a word of command. If I do, it will follow our orders. We could use it to find the heart. What do you want me to say?

water
Upon receiving Barleys command the water flows from the pool and deposits Barley next to the others before proceeding towards the tree but pausing a scant dozen feet away to await you.

You follow the mass of living water and it heads directly to the tree and passes within. You enter the short corridor through the roots of the tree and a briefly stopped by a stout wooden door that is burst open with a single slam from the elemental. Beyond it a large dim and open room. Though Rhidon and the elemental do not require any light Vaun and Barly have their visibility greatly diminished but soon realize that there is a faint light provided by luminous fungus and plants you are unfamiliar with. As you step within you find the air cool and filled with a mouldy odor. The walls are built of superior masonry with thick columns of living wood holding the high ceilings. The floor is covered with uneven flagstone and thin and thick roots making travel across them somewhat treacherous.

Upon entering the room you hear rustling noises and Rhidon spots a few enormous rats, the size of dogs, scrury away from their nest in the rooms north west corner behind the door. They quickly flee into a passage on the northern side of the room. The elemental proceeds across the room to the door on the far side and waits for you to follow.

Dec 30, 2023 11:05 am
Vaun entered the Treehouse following the elemental's direction. Upon entering, he waited for sometime to adjust his eyesight in the darkness and almost gasped while looking at the interior of the room. He almost went for his dagger as he saw the giant rats scurrying away, but as they left him and his company, Vaun relaxed a bit. He continued to follow the elemental to the far side of the room and awaited others to catch up.
Dec 30, 2023 12:38 pm
Barley pauses as he barely makes out the giant scurrying shapes of the rats. He takes out his torch, clicks his finger to produce a flame and lights it.

In the light, he joins Vaun and the elemental.

As Barly lights the torch you see several of the plants nearby react. Some retract and close their flowers, others open up pods or begin producing thorns. The elemental reaches over and snuffs the torch shaking its head. As the gloom returns it takes a bit longer to see as the plants are slow to begin glowing and it takes a while for your eyes to re-adjust.
Rhidon can see normally but Vaun and Barley have disadvantage on any rolls to see/discover thing that rely on sight.

The elemental shoves open the door and enters the room but then returns and turns south. Looking in Rhidon can see a door on the east way that has long been grown over sealing it shut by roots over a foot thick. Again he hears the sound of something scrambling away into the deeper darkness of the tree/building.

The southern door is made of stone and also requires the elemental to force it open to reveal another dimly lit room covered in roots, moss, and fungi. Sliding over the rough floor the elemental crosses to the far SE corner and through a doorway partially blocked by vines, roots, and branches. It easily slides through and around the plants tangle but you are forced to stop and hack your way through. As you do so Rhidon pauses for a moment staring into the next room confused at the glimpse of a face staring back at him from the gloom beyond but it quickly vanished.

Another room and then another. But this one has a floor that is smooth with tilework creating a mosaic picture that is oddly clear of any plant growth or detritus.

https://i.imgur.com/Zxw2l7V.jpg

The elemental pauses at the clear tiles then moves across the tiles. However as it moves through the middle of the mosaic you hear a pop sound from above then a splashing sound as you see what looks like a rain of seeds the size of your fist fall into the elemental and the floor around it. Almost instantly the seeds within the elemental alls spout and begins growing inside of it and within it. The twisting sprouts begin binding together and the elementals movement slows.
Dec 31, 2023 2:46 am
Rhidon observes the disappearing face, the mosaic, and the the seeds with equal parts fear and curiosity. There is much happening in this place I do not understand friends, including a glimpse of a face I saw briefly before it vanished. I'm not sure if you can make it out but there is a mosaic on the floor here, it depicts a large tree in a town... and that noise you just heard is a rain of seeds sprouting within the elemental and slowing it down.

Trusting that the elemental has been a reliable guide, Rhidon attempts to chop the sprouts with his axe in an attempt to free the elemental.

Rhidon slashes at the plants but fails to have much effect while Vaun manages to cut through several of the roots that extend from the elemental and seek to anchor into any nearby surface. Though this does not stop the spread of the plants it does limit their effectiveness. The elemental flows away from any seeds on the floor and begins swirling its mass to clump the plant mass into a single location but fails to remove the growing mass from its form.

The mosaic looks like a picture of the city you are in, though not overgrown. Nature and buildings combined to encompass the river with the great tree in the center of it all.

Seeing the elemental try and fail to eject a large clump of it, she jumps to try to sink her teeth into the growth and anchor it to the floor to give the elemental a better chance on its next attempt.

The elemental is an independent spirit with its own thoughts and feelings. The plants are currently infecting the elemental, though to what end you know not. If it was not an elemental there would be not reason for the plants not to grow, but currently they have infected the elemental and are hindering and possibly killing it. The elemental clearly does not want the plant in but the plant equally obviously targeted the elemental. So it comes down to which side you feel should prevail.

Watching as the final rat falls, tongue out and twitching paws pointed up in the air, at the hands of Rhidon, Beruga looks to the others awkwardly.

So, uh, that was a bit... overwhelming, at first. We had no choice but to fight, right? But I'm glad we won! - Hahaha!

After another awkward pause she changes the subject. We must be getting pretty close to the heart now. But I admit, I have no idea how we can alleviate its fear when we get there. When my daughter used to have nightmares, I would groom her and tell her stories of her grandparents, but I doubt that would work the same way with such a different creature. Also, it might still be scared for a reason. Until we discover the source of its fear, I think it would be best if we proceed with caution rather than... that thing. and she looks over to the elemental.

you can Test 2d6 to heal a creature other than yourself. If the

This Trait can also be used to cure poison, disease, and other
physical ailments that are non-magical. You must be next to the
creature to heal it.

Ok cool, so the health kit is for stabilization, good to know. It feels like it's going to get more dangerous the closer we get to the heart, so, I say we should rest until everyone has full health. If we are doing auto healing from Vaun after a fight, that would be how ever long Vaun needs it.

If the heart is being threatened, we may need to consider other ways to neutralize that threat."

Vaun settled at one side of the fire that he built using torches. He sat cross-legged and brought his dairy, where he started to casually sketch. His wounds ached but he had taken sometime to clean and bandage them. The silent ambiance was eerie but somehow serene. He drew and watched the campfire, the reflection of flames dancing in front of his goggle's lens. After sometime he spoke up, "You know, Beruga's plan might work. We had visions of the city's splendor beauty before all this happened. We can project the thought that we are building and nurturing the city, tending to it's many places, weeding and seeding to bring a better outcome. Maybe even appointing a new guardian? Maybe the heart will understand our sincerity and stop attacking us?"

Quote:
"Bearer of the Elements, seeker of harmony,
In this room, the past's whispers echo, a tale of woe and mystery.

Elderwood, once bathed in nature's embrace,
A city of art, magic, and a tranquil druid's grace.

The Treeheart, a gift, a beacon of might,
Embraced by the council, bathed in wisdom's light.

Cataclysm struck, demons unleashed their might,
The Treeheart, in fear, unleashed nature's fight.

Council lost, citizens bound to a living death,
Chaos and fear, their last fleeting breath.

Four elements entwined, seek the emissaries near,
Earth, water, fire, air, with them, dispel the fear.

Seed in the earth, let it take root and bloom,
Melt the ice, let water flow and consume.

Subdue the flame, its dance to a tranquil tune,
Control the winds, in harmony they croon.

Emissaries observe, their reactions guide,
A symphony of elements, where destinies coincide.

Harmonious blend, the doorway shall reveal,
The Treeheart's gratitude, your efforts it shall feel.

Restore the balance, calm the ancient soul,
In the heart of the Tree, let harmony take control."

May the elements guide your path, brave adventurers.

Seed the earth, melt the ice, subdue the flame, control the winds... I think the ice part might have been done for us. Beruga investigates the room and notices there are 6 cages build into the wall. They are not large enough to hold the elemental but as she inspects them she notices each has an odd smell sniff . . . sniff One smells burned, another like freshly churned dirt, another like a fresh cool breeze, one like the ocean, but the last two confuse her. The scents are unlike any she has smelled before. One reminds her of deep underground or dead creatures and the other like a spring day only without any smell of rain or plants. Odd.

The cages themselves are quite simple with several clasps to hold a simple board, engraven with runes, in place at the top. The walls are formed by branches or roots the thickness of a finger but smaller growths criss cross between the bars forming a mesh that encloses them entirely.

There are 12 wooden containers that look and feel like live wood with their "lids" being formed by thick leather leaf structures. Not finding any danger Beruga sniffs then nuzles aside the covering and peers within. Inside she spies a small model of a windmill. Looking into the other containers you find:
1 clockwork windmill, seeds, 2 small twigs, 3 a bowl with ice chunks, 4 empty box with a smoldering ember embedded at the base, 5 sand, 6 empty box that smells of lightnings and your hand tingles when you open the flat, 7 set of bones, 8 pouch of dust, 9 a pouch of luminous crystals, 10 set of pipes tied together with string so they dangle like chimes, 11 a pile of dead leaves that crumble at your touch, 12 a pitcher of water.

Though the container smells of earth, it like all the others is made of wood. Adding a bit of water to the seed siting on the hard wooden bottom has no reaction.

When you lift the bowl of ice you see a small crystal set into the base of the container. Bringing your hand near it and your fingers begin to cool. The closer to the inset crystal the colder they become.

The twigs easily catch fire when touched to the ember.
Placing the bowl of ice over the ember does slowly melt it.

OOC:
@Psybermagi, Does it glow, hmm?

To the rest of the gang, here's what I am thinking:

Wind (Solved) = clockwork windmill + Chimes

Combinations to try:

fire = empty box with smoldering ember embedded at the base + twigs (maybe the water bowl in it was what was causing it not to activate)

Earth = Spring box + seeds + water + dust or seeds + water + sand or seeds + dust + water + dead leaves (like mulch) (Vaun, I had missed that you had already added the water in a previous post, sorry!)

Water = Tingly lighting box + ice (now bowl of water with a crystal) + the other crystals (maybe this causes a mini-thunderstorm)

Here are the two I don't exactly know what to do with: bones and sand.

Anyone have any ideas? Did I miss any of the items?

The next room looks to be a guard room and has several cubbies with bits of armor including several helmets with stylized face guards that make the wearer to look quite ferocious. There are two other doors, one to the west and other to the north.

As you prepare to ascend the stairs Beruga catches an interesting scent and move to the south wall of the guard room. A poke reveals that a section of the wall, covered in leafy vines proves to conceal an open doorway to another room. Shining some light into the room reveals a set of black and white tiles in the SE corner. Open archways lead west and east while a door is on the south wall.

Beruga notices a path that seems both safe and to head towards water, the river or a fountain perhap. Though she has picked up a few citizens the chaos is too much for her to overcome for many.
Still she starts leading those few who will listen to safety. A few moments, that feel more like hours, in the panic filled city and Beruga has picked up a few more followers with her apparent confidence and the small group reaches a small plaza with a fountain.
The sounds of chaos and fighting are more distant and the mix of elves yong and old with a few gnomes and dwarves mixed in pause for breath. The gentle tinkle of the fountain seems oddly discordant with the approaching din of death and destruction. As you prepare the people to continue onwards the fountain squirts a stream of water out of it confines. To your amazement the water proceeds to flow across the plaza and down a street.

The world is large and time changes all things. As he meditates the sound gentle sound of the water seems to becon to him and the sounds of something moving nearby grows sinister. . . .

Be well and may you find your way. before returning to tending the plant. The tiny mole continues staring at Rhidon as you circle around her to get to the sound of water and after a few steps lose sight of the lady. Your dwarven eyes pierce the gloom and allow you to move in the rough cave easily and you seon see light up ahead as you follow the sounds of water. A thin stream, a trickle really, winds down a crevice that leads up and to clear skies and leaves of trees. As you pause, assessing your short climb, you hear the echoing patter of tiny feet behind you but see noting as you look back.

The catkin glares at Barley saying It does not concern you. You do not belong here. For a moment is looks like they might lash out and strike you as claws unsheath, but it looks around and growls Neither of us do and stalks from the room hissing you should leave in parting.
The catkin leaves through a darkened doorway and your little sid discussion gets the attention of the council with several of them giving disapproving glances. The discussion continues with what looks to be 3 factions solidifying. One want to focus on maintaining the natural balance and letting the Treeheart be free to grow and learn, the second things it should be sheltered until is has grown older and gained more intellect, wisdom, and power, while the third thinks it should be exposed to as such as possible of the variety of ife and joys that diversity and overcoming challenges that all life must pas through. Again none directly engage you as they discuss various ways to promote the wellbeing of the Treeheart and the city as a hole. All seem well intended but some are more willing to compromise than others. Feb 5, 2024 12:16 pm
"Thank you everyone for coming to my aid.", Barley says ripping the last strands of web off his person. He stands, then stretches.

Looking at the dead spider he says, "While I was in the enchantment, I saw a council deliberating two rooms to the east. The room had a balcony. Before we go, we may want to check that room. There maybe remnants or records left of what was decided there. They were debating what to do with the tree heart. I thought this one might have been the enchanter, they spoke to me in a way that made me feel so. The spider appeared as a Catkin in the enchantment. It tried to leave. I'm not sure if it wished to lead me away or if my curiosity provoked the attack, but a clue to this situation may be in that room." Barley relays the rest of what he can remember from the vision.

All back together now thanks to the elemental you head back to where you had been and pause to look out the open archway to the balcony. From inside you can see that you are much higher than a normal 2nd floor, perhaps 30 feet or so above the streets down below. The balcony is over the north side of the river. From up here you look out into a thick canopy of trees with the occasional building showing through. The massive bower of the central tree overhead blocks out most of the directy sky but enough still filters down to dimly illuminate the city. By the angle of the sunlight you can tell it is now late in the afternoon.

"A lot of time has passed. We must have been in that enchantment longer than expected.", Barley says mostly to himself. He turns from the balcony smiling. Even though the city is choked with vegetation, he can't help but be impressed by it's raw beauty.

"Now, let's see if there is any remnant of that long ago meeting.", he thinks and searches the balcony room for clues.

Feb 6, 2024 5:11 pm
"I think these were true visions, look there. These marks faded with time are where the table was in mine. Perhaps it is the heart itself trying to communicate? Wait, what was this about a mole? Berulga, Vaun, did you also see Rhidon's mole?", Barley asks.

Vaun scratched his chin, "I don't know about a mole; I saw an abandoned city, a waterfall, and I heard rustling water. Somewhere, I heard the feet sound of a creature approaching. It felt like it had many feet. Maybe, it is a mole? But I didn't see one, actually."
Feb 7, 2024 7:49 pm
"Prehaps it was another spider? Or maybe the spirit of the lady still roams the halls? Either way, we should continue", says Barley and thinks to the elemental, "When everyone is ready, please continue to lead us towards the heart."

What about the mole was suspicious, Rhidon?

If Vaun's vision was an empty city, Barley's vision was of a thriving and populated one, and I witnessed the day of the destruction, then perhaps Rhidon saw the planting of the Tree Heart? I still can't figure out what it all means, but I'm eager to push ahead and find out.

You look around curiously as you follow the water elemental back to the stairs leading up. They curve gently and after a while you pass through another door that had to be forced open. Beyond the door your see a room with the floor covered in perfect hexagonal tiles, and several sundered shields are scattered throughout the room. In one corner stands a suit of armor, matching the shield in design and similarly battered.

"Oh, I I meant that the mole was suspicious of me. He stared at me the whole time while the girl didn't take her eyes off of the sapling. It wasn't aggressive or anything Beruga, just got the impression it was wary of me."

Barley is the only one who is actually in communication with everyone else by telepathy. He acts as an old switchboard or semaphore tower operator and can relay things back and forth. So it is a good idea but as it has to go through Barley and this is a fast paced situation.
You have to roll to hit the correct one. I am ruling that taking time to not hit your ally will take 1 action each. So, should I remove the 1st or 2nd rolls. . . . hmmm ok I guess we can use the 1st attack.
Roll a test with disadvantage to determine who is who. 1-2 you are unsure and attack A, 3-4 you are unsure and attack B, 5-6 you discern correctly and attack the doppelganger. I will track damage on who is who until you are certain or one of them is dead.
Both of the Rhidon grapple and strike at each other. The doppelganger is perfectly mimicking Rhidon and the pair roll on the ground in a tangled mess. Even Barley has trouble telling who is who as the sudden commotion breaks his mental link to the combatants. He relays the suggestions but both dwarfs nod their heads. Was that one first or was it just a trick of them thrashing around. With both grappling and moving as they are it is nearly impossible to tell the difference.

The phantom lady looks thoughtful before replying I can not leave the tree so know not the state of the city other that what the Treeheart shares with me. Though I was on the council at the time of the collapse I did not tell the Treeheart to do this. But I am partially to blame, as are all the council members at that time. Some fled, others urged it to use its power to attack the demons, while I and others told it to sacrifice itself to protect the people. None of us took into consideration that the Treeheart is more than power an magic. It is alive and growing but immature and the attack frightened it. It wanted to save the people and protect the city but not at the cost of itself. So with our lack of unity and wisdom we demonstrated to the Treeheart that we were unfit to guide it and so it acted as best it knew on its own. I will accompany you to the Treeheart to act as interpreter for it if it lets you near.
Feb 16, 2024 6:23 pm

Maybe there is a chance to approach this differently this time. We also promise that, this time there will be more care taken against outside power."

Rhidon tells the others the meaning of the symbols he recognizes, "We may want to make copies of this script as well." and then thinking outloud adds with a shrug, "I wonder if they're pairs. Mountain landslide, boulder pebble."

Thinking back on the trade he's done over the years, he tries to remember if the symbols he doesn't recognize are part of some regional dialect he may be familiar with once he recalls additional context.

Rhidon recognizes the script as one used by lore keepers. They were sometimes also mages and enjoyed using lore to craft locks that would be simple to them but hard to others. Rhidon concurs that the verse is likely the key top open the door and recalls the Cycle of Stone is all about how the world is formed and will be destroyed, only to be reborn again. The key words are likely those that deal with changes in rock, not rock types themselves.
Dwarvish runes says: says:
Mountain , Stone, Dirt , Uplift, Sand , Crystallization, Volcano , Boulder , Pebble , Weather , Earthquake , Landslide , Erosion, Metamorphosis

That makes sense to me.
"Vaun I see you pondering over there. Would you like to try your solution?, says Barley.
Feb 23, 2024 2:01 pm
Vaun absentmindedly nodded, "Ah, Barley, I was wondering if this goes with this (pointing at Erosion and Dirt) and this with this (pointing at Earthquake and Landslide) and this with this (pointing out at Crystallization and Metamorphosis)?"

He read out those runes and looked up at the door.

typo on dirt. it was supposed to be crossed out and not underlined. my bad.
Speaking the words has no reaction but you note the symbols are in easy reach so try touching them. Vaun senses a slight reaction as he touches Erosion and Crystallization. After some discussion you figure it is likely a combination of sorts so the order is probably important and has 2 to 6? symbols. If this leads to a secure vault it might be more but if it just secures an area then it should not be too long.
Feb 24, 2024 1:52 am
"If the first two are Erosion and Crystallization, perhaps Weather is next leading to Landslide?"

I'm thinking maybe it is the order that these transformations occur naturally like the water cycle, but for earth items.

Way to go Rhidon!.

Here's my pitch for the cycle.

Weather leads to erosion and that leads to landslide. Earthquake leads to an uplift which forms a volcano.

The volcano erupts spitting lava which cools and turns to stone giving us crystallization and metamorphosis.

1. Weather 2. Erosion 3. Landslide 4.earthquake 5.uplift. 6.volcano 7.crystallization 8. Metamorphosis

With the door now open you proceed to the next room. This room is contains a altar of a goddess of dwarves to the north side of the room. The alter is of a single piece of stone inlaid with metal and other semiprecious stone and jems. Thin groves along the top and down the sides channel a trickle of oil that seems to seep out of the top of the alter.

The alter is of extreemly high quality. You easily senct the pressence of divinity from the alter. The god it is built to serve still exists ans noted by the blessing that persists on the altar.

Rhidon recognizes the alter as belonging to Berronar Truesilver, goddess of hearth and home. He finds it a bit odd to be in this city so plainly filled with elvish citizens and ideals. The marked showed that all types of craftsmen were drawn to the city as well. He can only assume that their influence must have prompted the crafting of this tiny temple to the divine matron of dwarven home and security. The quality is plain and he is confident it was truly crafted by dwarven artisan priests, as is custom for such a thing.
Feb 28, 2024 6:23 am
Vaun is pleasantly surprised by the beauty and refined quality of the room. He is mesmerised by the altar and hung his head down and clapsed his hands in praying position.
Feb 28, 2024 12:40 pm
As vaun does this he feels a soothing pressence from the altar.
Feb 28, 2024 12:52 pm
Barely places a coin on the altar as an offering then steps back giving Vaun room to pray. He looks at the oil flowing down it's sides.

"I wonder what that represents?", says Barley out loud to himself. He pauses a moment admiring the oil and then joins the Elemental and phantom waiting on the otherside of the room.

"When my friends are ready, let us continue to the heart", he thinks to both.

No sounds can be heard from above and all that Barley can sense are the party and everpressent tree. Both the elemental and Phantom stand to the side at the foot of the stairs watching you. At barleys prompting the Elemental refuses to continue then slowly receeds to noting leaving you.
Feb 29, 2024 3:14 pm
Vaun followed his friends and reached the stairs while observing the behaviour of the elemental. "Looks like we have finally reached the Treeheart or at least close to it. Should we proceed?"
Mar 1, 2024 2:37 am
Rhidon stares forward and nods, before looking to Vaun and adding "I think you should go first. When we encountered the infected gnome, you were able to heal him... I think we should only pursue combat as a last resort at this point. We wouldn't want to scare the treeheart any more than it already is."
Mar 1, 2024 5:16 am
Vaun nodded at Rhidon. He remembered the quest trial that was given to him by the so called 'Thief'. He had come a long way from that. He has met several new friends and overcome many obstacles. Perhaps he is ready, perhaps he is not. He stepped forward and started climbing the staircase.

You slowly ascend the stairs and notice that the phantom follows behind about 30 feet or so. The stairs wind up for what be several floors. Ahead you spy an increase in light through an opening. As you reach the top of you stairs you look out to see a chamber in the heart of the massive tree. The walls appear translucent as you look out over the city and woods. In the middle of the chamber is a phantom image of a tree with a much smaller crystalin tree in the middle of it.
A great presence presses down on Barley's senses and you all feel an overabundance of life filling the air about you.

Vaun is awestruck as he sees the crystalline tree. So this is the Treeheart. He bowed down, his head touching the floor, and he mentally called out to the Treeheart to give him permission in its abode. He didn't want to show any aggression or imposing behaviour. He needed to approach this as delicately as possible.
Mar 2, 2024 5:12 pm
Barley struck by the granduer of the tree as he stands underneath it stunned to silence. He watches Vaun bow down and matches the gesture.

Barley opens his mind to the tree if The heart needs to use him as a psychic link to the others, but does not push or call out to the tree. He supports Vaun as he takes the lead.

Treeheart
As Vaun moves to bow he feels a force stopping him before his knees can touch the ground. There are no other entrances to this room. As the tree of you stare on you feel the presence "focus" on you and a tumult of emotions and experience wash over you. Joy at companionship. Fear of loss. Uncertainty and hesitation with a lack of trust but not quite distrust. Images of the past, a budding seed, a caring mother that is recognized as the singing lady from earlier visions, growing slowly, people, art, commerce, the forest, the calamity, and the desolate city.

As you are overwhelmed by these feelings and visions the phantom lady sighs and passes you to bow. Something seems to exchange between the lady and Treeheart before the lady turns to you with a small sad smile and waves as if in farewell. The phantom then falls back while the Treeheat glows brightly. As soon as the phantom fades from view as it merges with the tree you hear a voices speaking in unison in your minds.

This will not last as there no body to form the link between the Warden and Treeheart. But while it does last it grants us the understanding to function on a level more similar to your own. This form of communion was designed by mother to allow the Treeheart to work with the council in times of need. But when the greatest need arose we failed. The Treeheart was too afraid and those council members willing to commune with it would not submit to the union and instead sought to use the Treeheart as a tool. The result was destruction. Not only of the enemy but also those we sought to protect.

We have started to fix thing but the Treeheart will need guidance. We know this. We thank you for helping those you found along the way get the release they sought and deserved. We ask of you one last boon. You have proven your good intentions but also a firm determination. If you leave, please send someone to help the Treeheart. It will remain a danger to all who enter its domain. It needs more time to mature and understand the world. Though the horrors of the cataclysm that befell the city cause us great sorrow it also showed the Treeheart much and it has learned a bit of what it means and how to to care for other.

Before the communion fades is there anything we can do for you?

As the voices ring in your minds you feel sorrow and regret as well as a determination to press on. However fear, loneliness, and uncertainty continue to wear away at the heart of it all.
Mar 3, 2024 4:57 pm
Vaun is suddenly overwhelmed by so many emotions, but he takes a deep breath and sits on the floor with his feet crisscrossing in a meditative position. During his time in the Academy he saw that many people could attain a unison of body and mind while meditating. In front of the Treeheart, who is trying to understand what is going on, he must be a vessel that shows that he is different and that he is composed. He rested his hands on his lap and started to bring the picture of the cycle of life in his mind in order to convey the thoughts to the Treeheart. He showed that a seed, when nurtured, will grow up to be a tree and then plant it's own seed as it dries out and dies. The propagation of life and death. He showed a mental image of the Eldergrove that was overrun by vegetation, but that vegetation receded and people came to build new shops and buildings, who in turn planted more trees and worshipped the Treeheart. He showed the Treeheart vague people who stayed by it and nurtured it. He brought out a feeling of guardianship in the Treeheart as the newly arrived citizen came and depended on the Treeheart as they took care of it in turn. It was like the leaves of a tree. A tree is nothing without it's leaves, which give it sustenance, and a leaf is nothing without the tree that grows it and exposes it to the light in a vibrant canopy. In the end, everyone depended on Treeheart as much as Treeheart depended on every citizen of Eldergrove who are ultimately the lifeblood of the city.

Treeheart
We are calming the cities defenses and will start the process of restoration but will only be able to do so much. We can help send you on your way if that is what you truly wish.

As for the help we need. They need not be versed in any magics. What is needed by the Treeheart is someone with experience, patience, and the ability to help teach and guide. The Treeheart learned that some of the most learned were the most foolish or egotistical. Not that learning is bad but it is also not key. The committee was to fulfill this roll but it became too political and distant from the common people. The Treeheart wishes the city to thrive once more but is not sure about being the focus of the city as it was before. It seeks simly to not be alone and to help those that live near it. What it need is people who can help it understand what people need vs what they want and what they should strive for on their own. The previous council failed in this.
Mar 6, 2024 3:26 pm
Vaun continued to listen to Treeheart and then said, "We will look for a person like that and we assure you that this time we will do better."

He had to discuss this back at the camp with all the other members of the expedition. The person they want to send must be chosen carefully or it will be back to what the previous council did.

Rhidon looks at the ground solemnly, and reflects on his travels. It was always been his goal to help those in need, ensure people are treated fairly, and at this moment he feels the opportunity pulling at his heart.

"Barley, Vaun... " he looks them both in the eyes, "Would you trust me with such a responsibility? To help the city thrive, ensure things are built back properly, with equality and fairness in mind. If so... I would be honored to take this on."

As Rhidon says this the tree shivvers and quakes before a single timid voice is heard. You . . . You won't leave me? You will stay? A thread of hope and longing easily heard in the Treehearts voice. But what about your family and friends. Won't you miss them? This time a mix of fear and concern clash. Maybe when more people come live here again you can bring some back here or you can go visit if you like. Please stay. Will you . . . . and the voice fades from the air

The to voices again resonate in all your minds. When you return where you came from we ask you seek out any druid circles and pass word to them of the Treeheart. A single druid or even full circle may be a good start and the mother of the Treeheart was an Arch-Druid herself.
Also we wish for people to return here. Any willing to live in harmony with nature may come and live here. The city was great once and can be so again with people that are willing to work to make it so. Please speak with those that sent you here to see if they would be willing to open the passage to Eldergrove to those who wish to visit and live here.

Feeling the tree's curiosity, Rhidon takes a step forward and addresses it directly. "I had a recent reconnection with wildlife, and have great respect and admiration for nature's intricate ways. My friends are loyal, but strong and will be fine without me. My family is distant and I feel little connection to them these days. I will stay, if you will have me."

Attempting to speak telepathically to Barley and Vaun, he thinks It has been a good journey friends, but I feel I'm meant to do this. I will do what I can to hold things over until you are able to locate some druids to assist, tell others of the fate that has befallen here so that others do not repeat similar mistakes.

Rhidon does a deep bow as a gesture of respect and appreciation for his friends, and attempts to slowly and calmly walk towards the tree.

Vaun looked at Rhidon and said, "Master Axehorn. You want to choose this? I can't think of any better person than you when you place your protection and guidance with Treeheart."

He bowed to Rhidon and said, "If this is what you want, then I feel sad that we have to part ways, but I will promise that we will find the right temperament of Druids to help and aid you in this endeavour."

He hesitated but then embraced Rhidon with a hug, "It was nice knowing such a confident and capable adventurer, and it was an honour meeting you. I will miss you."

So the Eldergrove arc awarded +12 XP
The Treeheart produces a small bud on a loop of vinethat Rhidon can wear to help the bridge the communication gap between him and the Treeheart over time. Before the phantoms presence completely fades they convey that all the infested will be gathered to let you all help determine which of them can be saved.

Returning to the Matrix Node where the Treeheart is gathering all the infested you begin the process of helping the Treeheart release those it took into its misguided care. Although much of the task is heartbreaking the peace and joy on each person's face as they are freed before dying makes it worth it. Fortunately that was not the outcome for all. Tens of the previous residents, most young of various races, are able to survive the process. Though confused and frightened they recognize Rhidons amulet as a symbol that only a warden of the Treeheart can bear so he is able to calm them down and guide them to the Node room in preparation for returning with you to the expedition base.

As you finish you note that a section of vines begins bulging then blooms into 4 lovely flowers. As the flowers bloom Rhidon is informed that the Treeheart wishes for each of you to receive a gift. All that is needed if for you to stoke the flowers pollen laden center and express the form you wish the gift to take. Though the connection is still tentative Rhidon is able to determine the gifts can be any object at all but each will carry a trace of the Treehears power of life and be a living item with mystic power that you will be able to cultivate to suit your needs.

You each do so and receive your gift that turns out to be a seed pod that will bloom in 1 day. With the work done and now accompanied by the survivors of Eldergrove you stepping onto the Node platform. Saying your farewells you say your final farewells as it activates and takes you away from this fallen city that still has a seed of hope for the future. Both in Rhidon and his care of the Treeheart and the refugees you take away, who you feel may one day return to help remake the city what it once was.

Healer is fine. There are other options. You can get an prestige psionic trait, Arch-Psion, that allows healing. Or Vaun could get a prestige trait that allows for self healing.
