In the main city of Eglar, there is a mid-sized tavern called The Arcadian Rose. Its proprietor is a hard-aged woman named Rhiann Vequaniel. The menu often consists of generous portions of steamed and baked seafood with seasoned vegetables and starches, as well as a fine selection of wines and alcoholic ciders. Rhiann maintains her own garden in the back of the tavern and never seems to be in want for the right produce, spices, or herbs for her recipes.
The Arcadian Rose sees a brisk business due to its location near the docks, as the freshness of the ocean catch draws in a fair number of tourists. The common room has a number of tables, and booths lie against the wall opposite the bar and kitchen. Across the main entrance on the other side of the floor is a slightly-raised stage for dancing or performances. The second floor of the tavern has three individual suites, each with a pair of small beds and a foot locker for securing personal belongings. The third floor is a loft with eight beds and foot lockers.
The kitchen is spacious and the larder is normally full. There are two other doors besides the one leading to the common room; a back door facing the garden, and an interior door leading down into the wine cellar and basement. Inside the basement, behind racks of casks and barrels, is a secret door that leads to a small room, used as a safehouse for Pale agents.
Beyond the garden lies a tiny shack with only enough room for a table, a few storage containers, and a bed. This is where Rhiann sleeps when not administering the tavern. Few people know of the secret panel underneath a false chest that leads to an underground chamber, where a small shrine to the goddess Eldath can be found. The secret room also serves as a safehouse for Pale agents.
Rhiann herself employs several waitstaff to address the needs of her guests, and sometimes hires seasonal staff to bring in supplies, so it's not uncommon to find a near-constant rotation of individuals seeing to various business. She is stern, but fair, and demands attention to detail so that nothing is overlooked or taken for granted.
