-wip-

A sailor taken as a slave when his ship was raided. A slave, escaping and swearing an oath to deal with slavers -- indeed, anyone who would subjugate the common man -- and to free others like him who haven't been as fortunate as he was to find an opening to escape.

Starting on the path of a Paladin, he eventually finds an opportunity to enhance his power, and takes it. Making a pact with something in the shadows (or was it the shadow itself?) he comes out even more proficient with a blade. Using his improved martial prowess, he redoubles his efforts to exact vengeance and defend the defenseless.

Let me know what you think of all this.

Regan would know of The Iron Ring, a crime network of slavers. Perhaps he was original captured by The Ring? Or sold to The Ring by his captors.

Where do you think, in the Known World or beyond, Regan originally was from? Guide to Mystara

Perhaps...When Regan escaped and started on his path as a Paladin, his motivation to fight slavery took him to Sind because he came to understand that the royalty there is complicit in the workings of the Iron Ring, allowing Sind to be an important hub for The Ring.

While in Sind trying to uncover the operations of The Ring, Regan was approached by the Order of the Shadow. This order was once simply Sindhi monks of the Order of the Keis (a generally peaceful order of martial artists). The Keis did what they could to peacefully and diplomatically defend the people of Sind from the corruption of the leaders of the land, but some Keis believed that the order was too slow to take clear action to stop the heinous workings of The Ring and royal corruption. These Keis broke away from the order and formed their own rogue offshoot order of assassins and warriors called The Order of the Shadow, since its members used various shadow magics to hit the enemy in secret and mystery.

Perhaps...Regan related to the Order of the Shadow's cause...joining there efforts... and this is where he started on the warlock path, training in the ways of the shadow, and making a pact with the shadow source itself to more quickly enhance his strength as a Paladin/Warlock and his ability to fight The Iron Ring.

Now the connection to the current story...There was a Keis monk named Taresh who was sent by the leader of the Keis order, Master Jiren, to infiltrate the rogue Order of the Shadow and find out its workings. Taresh did infiltrate and join for a time, but then himself was captured by The Ring. Master Jiren sent Regan on a mission to find Taresh and bring him back. Veilmaster Samin sent Regan on a mission to find Taresh and bring him back to the Order of the Shadow.

The search has led Regan to Maulia. (See the Story thread.)

Honestly? I like it. It's far more connected than what I was planning, tbh. I was going to have him originally from Darokin... the wealth and robust merchant class lend themselves nicely to a sailor dealing with transporting trade goods. I can certainly stick with that as his background, and use your ideas for a more detailed look at what happened after escaping from slavery.
