@Seck,Could you allow 5th edition D&D sheets in the game details, please?
Can everyone get to them?
Dec 12, 2023 9:56 pm
I'm sorry folks! I meant to set up some organized threads before everyone got in here, but unfortunately got pulled away from it this morning. I'll organize tonight. In the mean time could everyone hold off on posting. Except in this Circus Talk - OOC thread.
Dec 13, 2023 4:08 am
Okay. I shifted things a bit.
I put the threads you all started for your characters in the forum called Characters. Please keep putting your character backgrounds in the respective threads there.
The Episodes forum is where our story will take place.
Finally, our OOC communications can remain in the thread RageRed created called Circus Talk - OOC

I haven't really used it in D&D before, but I would like to use inspiration in this game (a little differently than what the PHB describes). I'm inspired by the the Earthdawn game and EZD6 game that I'm in now on GP, where players can build up things like karma and hero dice to perform amazing feats or get out of tight situations. (BTW, Thank you Skyharpy for introducing me to EZD6 in the game your are running!)
In our game here, you will gain an inspiration point every time the result of an ability test or combat roll you make is a natural 1 or a natural 20. You can stockpile inspiration points. You can spend one inspiration point to gain advantage on a roll. You must declare the use of inspiration before making the roll. If you still don't like the result of the roll, you can spend another inspiration point to roll again.

I do something similar with inspiration in games I run. I also award points for level advancement and outstanding roleplaying

*Runs off to alter the sheet to allow for multiple inspiration points*I also keep a running tally of things in my gameplay posts, thing like HP, KI, and now inspiration points. (It helps me keep track) You'll see.
So you may not need to keep track of inspiration on your character sheet if you don't want.

I try to keep track. And the sheet is fine -- just switched inspiration from a check box to a fillable field.

So, is this island kingdom mostly made up of halflings? (just reading some of the lore)...and are the candidates all halfling?

The Kingdom is mostly made up of humans. The indigenous islanders are a human people called Makai, but there are hin ( the Mystara name for halflings) as well as other races around. Pirates find places to hide out in these islands too. And there are many hin pirates as well.
"The Kingdom of Ierendi is made up of a collection of islands in the Sea of Dread lying to the south of the Five Shires. There are ten main islands, of which the largest is Ierendi Island, which boasts Ierendi City, capital of the kingdom. Safari Island is famous for its wilderness reserves and its "adventure parks", or simulated dungeons. Alcove Island is an infamous pirate haven, while Utter Island is well known for the unusual sand architecture built by the albino natives. The mysterious White Island hosts a small community of druids, Whitenight Abbey, that permit few visitors. Roister Island, in the southern portion of the kingdom, lies in some of the richest fishing grounds in the Sea of Dread. Aloysius Island, plagued by the mau-mau, a type of disease-carrying mosquito, serves as a penal colony. Elegy Island boasts mysterious ancient burial grounds. Fletcher Island is a tourist magnet, producing many works of art from the feathers of the native birds. Last but not least, Honor Island is home to a mysterious group of mages, who deal harshly with intruders and build the famed ironclad fireships of Ierendi." ...from Guide to Mystara
Also here is a decent map.
There is a hin mixed into the six contestants. The 'adventurer' contestants need not even be Ierendi as far as the tournament's historic guidlines go. In fact, even circus troupe members could enter the contest. So there will be Ierendi humans and a couple outsiders mixed in to the contestant group. This may be a source of frustration to some in Ierendi.

Nice descriptions and intros so far. Khali's area is cool. I like how, she purposely doesn't have much 'flair' because she feels these are distractions. Her space will be visited soon!
Love the videos of Tasya's and Khyree's acts! The crowd goes wild!
MaJunior will be setting up Anlo Westwind, human thrower soon and we'll get the game moving.

Tasya's usual routine post show is to be present in a reception area, if one has been designated depending on the circus' current location. She would stay there for a short time and then depart to her dressing room to clean up and change out of her costume. She could also there, after, receive admirers under the watchful eye and protection of a trusted troupe security. Eventually turning in for the evening.
This, of course, may be different due to the reception in the lounge tonight.

Anlo's usual routine would be to immediately head to his quarters and change out of his costume, freshen up, and get into regular clothing... which is damn near the same outfit, sans the bright colors. (In truth, he looks like he could be a fixture in a stereotypical thieves' guild.) The bandolier -- which he reloads -- stays with him though.
After a quick change and an equally speedy cleaning up (he prefers not to smell around guests) he would make his way to the reception area; normally finding his parents first, and then hobnobbing with guests and the other performers until things are shut down for the night.

Awesome! Everyone has got a post in about what their characters are up to post show. Now it's my turn. I'll get on it ASAP.
I started a subforum for information regarding Episode 1. One thread lists the NPCs (aka suspects). I will elaborate that thread as you interact with these NPCs throughout game play.
Also, the other thread is the planned schedule of events for the week leading up to the tournament. This "in game" schedule is was Madagast was hired to do, but as the drama unfolds things may or may not go as planned.
Finally (in this update post), I still have to work more on the circus ship map. And I will be, also ASPA. There are more levels and details to include there.

Would Tasya, Khyree, and Anlo be expected to be present for the all presentations at the beginning of the activities in the lounge? With the change from a normal post-show, Tasya would have gone to do a quick clean up and costume change if so, instead of her usual routine. She may or may not be present yet.
Jan 5, 2024 5:45 pm
Hi everyone. This is going to take a while folks! Longer than I expected. Sorry.
Well, I got the initial appearance and openly known backgrounds of the tournament contestants up so far. I still have the rest of the NPC cast to do. Yikes!
Again, I figure as you all interact with these characters and they reveal more about themselves, I will update their descriptions in the Episode 1:NPCs thread.
Rage if you are referring to the activities in the lounge as they relate to the Scedule of Events Plan, I will leave it up to you exactly what you have been expected to do on similar occasions in the past. I see it like it's mostly Madagast's job to entertain special guests but he of course always wants to show off his greatest stars in various meet and greet occasions. Beside the fact that he likes having his troupe liking there, it's good PR for the circus after all.
BUT as we play you all can make your own choices as what to explore, who to talk to, where to go before and after engagements, etc. And also this episode will not be only about training and putting on the tournament circus style, but other problemsome things will happen that interfere with the tournament you all will be faced with them.
I will--in game--roleplay what Magagast explicitly asks of you, like for example he has already asked the four of you to train the contestants and design their events. Exactly, how you do that is up to you four. I would hope from a gaming logistics point the four of you communicate in-character and out-of-character alike to devise these plans.

Okay, I finally got another post in! Really sorry for the wait! Hopefully everyone is still onboard (pun intended).
I haven't added anything to the Circus Ship map. But I still hope to. We should just get going anyway and that will all unfold.
I did add a bunch of NPC characters in the NPC (aka suspects) thread. Don't feel like you have to know all that or anything, just get interacting with these NPCs and use the NPC thread as a reference.

Hmm...interesting thought.
If you guys think that you might want to communicate that way, we could say that the key circus players:
the four PCs,
Ganesh,
Jin (Ganesh's grandson, magician, and ringmaster understudy),
and Caspian (lead roustabout)
all have linked sending trinkets in their possession that have been charmed with magic that allows a short message of twenty-five words or less to be sent by anyone with a trinket to one or more characters who possess the other linked trinkets. The recipients hear the message in their mind, recognizes the sender, and can answer in a like manner immediately. Messages can be sent across any distance and even to other planes of existence, but if messages are being sent across different planes of existence, there is a 5 percent chance that the message doesn’t arrive. Each item allows its possessor to freely send a message a number of times per day equal to the character's level.
This might make sense and fit nicely, since Madagast Circus is quite a large, intricate operation--as far as circuses go in this world, the sending trinkets would function like headsets of modern real world theater.
If you guys would like to incorporate them into the game let me know.
By the way, even though much of this episode will likely take place on the circus ship, don't feel like you can't take the game off the ship if you want.

What do you all think? Should we play with just three players and have me find a way in the story to have Khyree back out of being a tournament organizer?
Or should we find another player?
I don't mind continuing with three players. I think that is a good number of players for play-by-post.

I don't really have an opinion.
I know that sounds like a cop out, but it should be what works best for the GM and the story. That said I feel like while our group is only three, it's a strong three... so I can understand why Red may not want to throw that off.

How are the Stewards addressed? Khali catches on that titles seem to be important to these people. (The Royals are "Your Majesty", for example.)
Feb 7, 2024 1:41 am
I would think the Stewards would be accustomed to being addressed as things like "My Lord Steward," or "Your Grace." Although some of them haven't been 'nobles' for very long and are essentially companions of the king or queen from their days as adventurers. They were appointed after Queen Mari and King Palfrit won the tournament. Queen Mari's court is about two years into the position, Palfrit's about a year.
That said, Kahli would be able to tell that Steward Quint himself is from 'foreign' noble stock from before his appointment in Palfrit's court.

Hey folks. How is everyone feeling about this game? No one has posted in almost a week and hasn't dropped a note in OOC or anything. We still going? Or are we falling out of this one?
Feb 15, 2024 6:53 pm
I'm having severe difficulty trying to keep all the stewards straight in my head. Too many names without faces in the IC thread and having to go to the OOC NPC thread each time a name pops up.
There's also the matter of the reoccurring "Blame the Circus" which makes my character immediately not want to help these people.

Yes that information would be common knowledge that your characters would know.
By the way last night I had the idea to make all the NPC names links to the info posts about them. I started but didn't finish. I do some more right now. Hopefully a linked table of contents so to speak will make it easier to reference them. I may even start putting links to the NPC info in the game posts.
That said I'm not sure I am going to get to a post today. I hope to tomorrow.

@Seck, You know you can create an NPC sheet with all the NPCs on it and post as the NPCs, right?
Feb 25, 2024 5:41 am
Shared GM sheets - guide and repository
Rage I found this, but I'm not sure what the end result will be if I go through the steps of implementing it? Do you know what else it will do beyond making it easy to show icons of the NPCs when I post?

Feb 25, 2024 7:27 am
@Seck, once you enable NPC sheets for the campaign and create your NPC sheet, you will be able to see a button at the bottom when you're posting. By clicking on that button, it will open up the NPC sheet and you can then click on which ever NPC your want to post as. Their image will appear in the text field and then you can post as them. You can then, repeat the process and add other NPCs into the same post without having to post for each one.
You can keep notes and details about each NPC on your NPC sheet and look there anytime you open to make a post for an NPC without switching back and forth to another thread.

He's the lead roustabout in regard to the circus and first mate in regard to the ship. Rousties and deckhands are one in the same on this ship. By default he is in charge of security too.

Sorry for my confusing descriptive skills.
Yes. It looks like you could fairly easily find a path by navigating on top of the stone slabs that make up the 'maze'. It looks too easy in fact. And the serpents that swim in the recesses of the stone platform are foreboding.
I forgot to respond to Ma's reference to the blood drops in my last post. You will see some drops on the slabs that would reveal the path that the hin took through the 'maze'

OOC:
So,@MaJunior , looks like you pick the squares and I make the rolls because she's following Anlo's lead. May 29, 2024 3:53 pm
Ma, rolling first would have worked too. My convoluted idea could be employed and unfold in various ways 🙃 I see how it's confusion who will the direction. You guys could play it the way Sky suggests. Ma picks the goal square and Khali rolls. (Or you could discuss it OOC, up to you. I think Sky's idea would keep things moving along.)
I was just thinking that you guys tell me where you're heading, aiming to pass through three squares. If your role succeeds you mange to spot triggers and avoid them, moving successfully through all three squares; if your role fails, you trigger something somewhere along your path. In either case, I'll provide narrative about how each turn unfolds.

Hey guys. Just a quick check in to see how everyone is feeling.
Are you enjoying the game?
Are the story elements fun so far and making any sense?
Do you want to keep going?
Do you want an off ramp for your character?
At this moment, I don't see myself devising an Episode 2 for Madagast. So as far as this episode goes, would you prefer it to wrap up more quickly or would you prefer it to have a few more nuanced elements/stages before it completes?

1. Yes, I'm having fun.
2. The story is great.
That all being said, I know that Pbp is a format for busy players. However, there is a difference between 'slow' and 'coming to a T total stop'! If it ever comes to the latter you know the game is going through the 'spiral of death'.

Sky, I don't think Ma is coming back into this game. There's no recent activity listed for him on GP and he was in many games here. I hope all is well with him and nothing serious happened.
Considering that, would you like to finish this game as a solo adventure? If you rather not, no worries. We could just end it here.

Right now I'm confused as to what is counting as an action, interaction and bonus action. If she still has an action she will also take the Dodge action. If she can, she'll swap the Cataclysm with the Upgraded Civilization; realizing her mistake and I'll update her post.

Right. It's confusing.
Let's say that manipulating the images' positions don't count as an action; it's basically just Khali's thought process acting and the headband is making it happen.
Also let's say that testing if the image is an open portal by pushing Khali's hand into the image is quick interaction with that object, BUT let's not count it as her action. So she still could take an action this turn.

Khali already got the tournament Image D:The Ierendi Tournament in the right position, which is position 4.
I'll make its circle green when an image is in the right position.
Also, Khali realizes that Image C: Rain of Fire is the first thing that occurred in this time line.
And she realizes that Image A: The Grand Conjunction is something the elder seers of her wandering kin spoke of as a prophecy far into the future and it something that has not yet happened.
Sky, with this in mind, perhaps you would like to edit your last post of Khali's arrangement of the images.
I got that both Anlo and Khali are both taking the dodge action. I'll wait to see what Khali does with the images, as this will effect if more statutes come alive or not.

@Seck
OOC:
What you said is true; things that work easily around a live game don't work out the same in Pbp. I'm a Dnd GM but I won't run that system in a Pbp game. I admire you GMs that do.Jul 27, 2024 11:37 pm
Just in case you missed this in my last post, since I edited it in a few minutes after the initial post...

I'm sorry Sky and Ma. A perfect location opened up to move my business into. So I have been totally occupied by getting many things in the works to get into the place. I'm sorry for disappearing, but things are looking good regarding the place, so I hope to post in our game tomorrow.
As I said in the other game that I DM...thank you Sky for giving me a kick here. I'll get playing again if you both are still in!

Not as far as I know. Seck showed up briefly, but seems to be gone again. I hope he's alright.

There's really nothing to respond to. I was waiting for the captain to respond to Khali.
But that also doesn't address that he made a few posts in the other game and hasn't posted there for a while again either.

Sorry, I don't know about any other games. Yes, reason for concern. I hope he, or she, is ok too.

Sorry! Sorry! I’m here. Life has been keeping me really busy. I do want to continue our game. I’ll get a post in later today. Hope you guys are still up for it.

Hi guys. I'm still here. And also still in the process of moving my business. I want to keep our game going. I apologize for posting very, very slowly Lately. I will try to keep mty posts to at least once a week. Hopefully in a month the bulk of this move and remodeling will be behind me.
Also, after you two finish this adventure, I have an idea, if you're interested. I am running another game in the same world that involves the same circus. The other game is not focussed on the circus. Ma knows this because Ma is playing a character in it.
If the two stories were connected, the other game would be in the future for your characters. If your are interested in joining that game after you complete this one, I can give you more insight about what I'm thinking. Ma, you could potentially play Anlo and Regan simultaneously in the other game.

And Sky, in the future (to fit with the other storyline) Khali could have become a powerful seer who is known to some as Lady Oceana.

"This all reeks of Glantrian craft to me. The wizards of Glantri have their hands and eyes all over the Known World. Perhaps the alliance between the Ierendi Navy and the fire wizards of Honor Island is a thorn in Glantri's side. I'm sure if it weren't for their patrol, the smuggling of magic items through the Minrothad Guilds would move more...freely."Oct 6, 2024 2:11 pm
Here is what you would know about Glantri
1. A Kingdom of Magic
The most important thing that everyone knows about Glantri is that it is ruled by wizards. Magic is highly revered and central to the nation's identity, and it boasts the most prestigious magical academy in the world: the Great School of Magic. Non-spellcasters tend to be seen as lesser, while powerful mages are regarded with great respect, fear, or envy.
2. No Clerics Allowed
Glantri is hostile to religion, and the practice of divine magic (clerical magic) is outright forbidden. Worship of Immortals (the Mystaran equivalent of gods) is illegal, and clerics, if discovered, face harsh punishment or exile. This contrasts with most other Known World cultures, where religion and the Immortals play significant roles in society.
3. A Land of Nobles and Politics
The country is ruled by aristocratic wizards, each of whom governs a dominion and competes for political power in Glantri's Council of Princes. There is a lot of political intrigue among the noble houses, and outsiders are often caught in their games. The ruling Princes are powerful, but their personal ambitions frequently lead to rivalry and power struggles.
4. Dangerous and Mysterious Land
Many know that Glantri's lands are filled with strange creatures, magical experiments gone wrong, and hidden arcane dangers. Stories circulate of creatures like golems, animated constructs, or even mutated beasts created by wizards' experiments. Adventurers might also hear about the Broken Lands nearby, home to dangerous humanoid tribes, which can be a problem for Glantri's borders.
5. Exotic, Mixed Culture
Glantri is known for its diverse population. There are several distinct principalities within Glantri, each with its own cultural heritage. There are human wizards from various ethnic backgrounds, such as the Averoignese, Flaems, and Alphatians, as well as other races like elves (from Erewan and Belcadiz), lupins (dog-like humanoids), and even gnolls. This mix of cultures and races is not often found in other Known World nations.
6. The Great School of Magic
Even those who have never been to Glantri would have heard of its Great School of Magic, where wizards from all over the Known World (and beyond) come to study and advance their magical knowledge. It is considered the best magical school, and many aspire to train there, although the admissions process is rumored to be strict and expensive.
7. Floating Castle Rumors
Rumors abound of powerful wizards having created floating castles or other arcane wonders in Glantri. Adventurers might hear about these mysterious strongholds, some of which are believed to hold untold magical knowledge and treasure.
8. Cold Climate
Glantri lies in the northern part of the Known World, and many travelers hear that it has a cold, mountainous terrain. The Principalities of Glantri are nestled in the Glantrian Alps, with a mixture of alpine valleys and harsh weather in the higher regions.
9. Suspicious of Outsiders
Because Glantri is rife with political intrigue and arcane secrecy, its people tend to be suspicious of outsiders, especially those asking too many questions. However, if someone is a spellcaster, particularly a wizard, they might be treated with more respect, though still regarded cautiously

I know he was moving his business and remodelling and all the headache that goes with it. Something had been said about all of that hopefully being done mid-November. Unfortunately, I'd say give it another 2-3 weeks.

No worries. I apologize, it didn't click that he didn't post the update here. If I had realized it, I'd have reposted it here straight away for you.
