A young woman from midtown Memphis, though originally raised in the city of Boston. She had moved to Memphis 5 years before the Crash. Grace and her father, Brian, moved from Boston to Memphis after her mother sadly passed away from cancer. She now uses her mother's name, Claire, as an alias in the Loss.

Back in Boston, her father worked in the Computer Science field. Grace never asked what his job actually was, but she knew he was good at it. He was highly valued by his company, earning an impressive salary. After their family tragedy, Brian took a pay cut to open up a quiet electronic repair shop in Memphis. It was a big change that helped them stay grounded. He wanted to be there for his daughter, leaving his prestigious career behind.

Their little shop was called O'Connell Adjustments, it kept them occupied most days. Grace picked up some of her father's expertise while helping out around the shop. She didn't care for a career with electronics, but enjoyed spending time with her him. They became a close duo, or trio with the family dog.

Grace's real passion was photography. It started off as a casual hobby with mostly pictures of her dad and their ardent Old Victorian Bulldog, Theodore. They got the name from her dad's favourite baseball player, Ted Williams. Grace developed a keen eye since those family photos, really letting her art grow. Finding beauty after the Crash has been tough, yet she still seems to find something special amidst the chaos.

O'Connell Adjustments is now a small home for it's resident Casualties. When the infection hit the city, Brian and her collected supplies and used the shop to barricade them from the changing world. Several weeks passed; help never came and the madness just got worse. It got to the point where they had to leave the bubble of their boarded up shop. It was a terrifying idea, but it was the only option to continue on and survive.

As her father would make trips out into the Loss, Grace was told to stay put at the shop. It was too dangerous. His first couple runs were successful, coming back with decent loot. They built up a respectful cache after some time, letting her father venture out further. The two needed a more sustainable place to live though. The returns from scavenging the area diminished. Brian became determined to find a new home base for them.

One of the mornings, Grace's father set out for a supply run. He kissed his daughter on the forehead and told her he'd bring back some canned pork-n-beans. It was her favourite meal even before the Crash. She smiled at him without an ounce of doubt in the man. Then he went out, diving into the Loss.

3 days had passed and her father still hadn't returned. It took another 2 days before she admitting that something was wrong. She broke down in uncontrollable tears in the front end of their shop. The pup, Theodore, burrowed his snout into her chest. His soft coat soaked in tears, Grace cried until all her pent up pain turned into sated strength. She became a stronger person that would mask her old self.

Now living in throughout the Loss, she goes by her mother's name 'Claire'. The memory of her family is motivation to keep fighting. She salvaged one photo from the old world; a childhood picture of her and her beloved parents at a Boston Red Sox game. Her father was a huge baseball fan. Most nights he would enjoy a cold beer in the garage and listen to the game on the radio. Grace would often join him, growing a love for the sport as well. It was more than just a game to them though. The time together was something special. She now wears her father's RedSox cap that he left behind.

Grace hopes that she can settle down somewhere quiet and free of Causalities or politics. No more scavenging or killing. She wants her dog to be able to roam without worry. Retirement is only a distant dream, but she wants to get there one day. Claire doesn't know if the Recession is the end game, though it's perks are hard to ignore.

Wow. Okay great start. Numbers look good. Quick setting clarification: The Recession is the area east of the Mississippi River that is "safe and secure." A lot of those areas still resemble America as it is today. The Loss is everywhere else and it is the traditional post-zombie apocalypse setting. There is an extremely tight border control along the entire length of the River from Louisiana to Canada. The eventual goal of most Takers is to find a way in to the Recession.

From your story, I thought you were going to go with the Bait tough spot. Like you smuggled yourself out of the Recession to find your father or something like that.

Just so I understand, were you in the Recession and then went back to the Loss?

Also, as I mentioned with Genisisect's cat, I think the animal as dependent works, but it costs the same as a human one. Yours would be extra challenging because your vignettes would always involve the dog since that's all you have.

Yeah, a little confused with the setting. Not entirely sure where our characters are starting. We all start in the Recession unless are Lost? In my head, Claire started off in the Loss. Her father went missing so she was forced to survive with just her and Theodore. The two became excellent scavengers. They eventually came across the Recession (in my head is this big safe city) and started working as a scavenger there. Like, she takes jobs and goes back out into the Loss to complete them.

The thing with her father. She has accepted he is dead, however she will always be looking for signs of him being alive as she explores. I didn't feel Bait was the best fit for her. Claire isn't really trying to support a family or desperate. I only placed her in the Recession for the sake of joining the crew. Her father was becoming a scavenger, so she is more following that trail.

I saw the conversation about the cat. The dog costs bounty to buy, extra with upgrades. Mine has the friendly and hunter upgrade. If the dog becoming a dependant is a little redundant with its upgrades, I can find someone else to be mine. Having 1 CHA, I just need one person? It could always be a crew member, I believe. Claire doesn't really allow herself to get close with anyone. So, how should I approach this dependant thing?

Alright, so couple things to unpack there.

First off. The setting. Generally, unless you have the Bait background, you are someone who did not make it to the Recession before or during the Crash. Most characters have spent the last 5 years surviving however they can in the Loss.

I didn't realize the dog was like a trained animal. I still think it works, but you'll have the potential complications just like you would with having a taker as a dependant. Like if something happens to your dog on a job it could have serious complications for you. Take a look at the Takers as Dependents section of the book. I think that could make for some interesting role play anyways so I'm cool with it.

RE: the cost of the dog. That's going to be the cost to own and upkeep the dog. Which is different from The cost associated with it being dependent. That would represent the cost of having this companion and the money you spend on activities with it or maybe the extra cost of a pet that you treat as a dependent. Sweet doghouse or whatever.

Ah, alright. So, I adjusted the background so she lives in the Lost. No home base anymore, she roams where the resources are. The extra upkeep for having ye dog as a dependent makes sense. The dog isn't treated like a work horse. It's her family dog. Calculating upkeep and all those other systems is a bit confusing for me, at the moment lol

We'll get there. The upkeep isn't as bad as it seems at first glance. Let's focus on getting the characters up and meshing. Then we can worry about details.

Still need gear for claire

Updated. How does upkeep work? Say I have a knife and I dont use it the entire job. No charges spent or anything like that. Do I still pay upkeep on it?
Sep 11, 2016 5:41 am
Yup. All things whether used or not require regular upkeep. This may oversimplify things, but assume it to represent you making sure that a piece of gear continues to be in working order. That being said, paying upkeep is not necessary, but there are potential consequences if you don't, which can include losing charges or upgrades permanently.

By my count, you spent 19 of your 20 bounty. For now, I'll go ahead and put the last Bounty in your Bank on your character sheet..

Haha, sweet... Got an extra bounty I didn't account for.
