For building my character … I think I’ll go with point buy since those rolls in the primary chat were not kind to me.

Pending approval, I would like to build a Fairy Rogue who will go Arcane Trickster or possibly Scout specialization when we get to that level. I think a fairy would be a great scout to support any group of adventurers; but also a fairy makes sense as an arcane trickster.

I'm pretty sure the fairy race is in our allowed list but I do want to make sure; fairies are part of Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse text. I also was hoping her background could be that of a Failed Merchant (Acquisitions Incorporated) and her disinterest in the family business is what led her to pursuing skills that were a bit more underhanded in order to survive.

She has a magpie-like fascination with shiny objects and baubles, can be impulsive and sticky-fingered. Her training in the family business granted her skills to construct beautiful and unique jewelry pieces, though she has picked up the habit of dismantling stolen pieces and refashioning them into completely new works for sales that slip under the radar of people looking for the reported goods.

Fairy is fine as well as Failed Merchant.

All of the stuff you get from This is Your Life is more background before you meet the party.
Stuff about your family and household.
If you had any friends, enemies, or anything.
If that one didn't give you anything useful try this one This is your Life.

Any Suggestions? I kind of like the idea of your mother being missing. That could have happened a few years ago. You could have grown up well off living on the top floor of the shop your family owned. That is an easy fix.



You gained a bit of good fortune. You found some money. You have 8 GP in addition to your regular starting funds.
You spent time working in a job related to your background. Start the game with an extra 5 GP.
We are going to remove these two. It will keep it even with everyone else getting a small boost.

I am super on board with mom vanishing. Maybe that was the catalyst for Briar losing interest in the family business and what ultimately set her off to her roguish lifestyle. I think she's pretty young still so she might have been entering the "rebellious teen" era of her life and losing her mother was the final thread keeping her tethered to home. Here's what I have now:

Rosaline Nettlebloom married Linden Thistlethorn.

The Nettlebloom family of yester-century founded Nettlebloom Jewelrs & Gemcrafts which became an established source of the highest quality gems sourced by the extremely shrewd and keen-eyed Nettleblooms. Their final products were exquisite and highly sought after. The business was handed down through the generations.

Linden's family had a similar business history though they specialized in precision cutting and delicate metalwork. When Rosaline married Linden, the duo set the new standard in uniquely elegant and whimsical artistry, merging their two respective business dynasties into Nettlebloom and Thistlethorn.

Some decades after their union, Briar became their only child and was destined for greatness, being taught to run the business and having acquired the unique skillsets both her parents had excelled in. Early in her childhood, Briar was known to be headstrong and stubborn, a bit of a spitfire and her parents lovingly nicknamed her Bramble.

At some point during Briar's "late teen" years, Rosaline ventured on a solo trip to broker a deal that would yield some unique resources for the family. As time went on and it became less and less likely she would be seen again, the business struggled due to Linden's insurmountable heartbreak. Between her father withdrawing into himself, having to shoulder additional burdens for the family business, and the loss of her mother, Briar rebels against the structures she has been placed into and abandons her home to find life meaning elsewhere.

She now uses Bramblethorn as a surname and adopted Nettle as her middle name; she doesn't want to erase her parents but she wants to forge her own path with her own identity separated from that business.

As for the rest of the bits, it's only natural that she would have made some friends, some enemies, and maybe some frenemies along the way. Since she's made a bit of a living stealing and repurposing stolen goods, she's bound to have crossed some lines along the way. At this particular juncture, I am not sure that it is important to have any of those particular encounters solidly fleshed out unless you think we need one.

For sure. The HTML is all coming back to me now, slowly but surely. Still working on updating gear and stuff, but most of the basics are there now on Briar’s sheet.

I was thinking about her fairy quirk and I like the idea of her having leaf tattoos that move across her skin that reflect her mood and health. Like they blow in a gentle breeze when she’s calm but they whip around like in a storm if she’s angry. If she’s sick or sad, they might wither or fall from their branches. I also like using that as a way for her to subtly incorporate the Thieves’ Cant language into a visual; she can focus and direct the leaves to spell out coded messages silently on her skin. Thoughts?

Yeah. I have no problem with that. IMO, you use Druid Craft to do it, or at least flavor as such.

You instantly make a flower blossom, a seed pod open, or a leaf bud bloom.
You create an instantaneous, harmless sensory effect, such as falling leaves, a puff of wind, the sound of a small animal, or the faint odor of skunk. The effect must fit in a 5-foot cube.

At Dawn Roll 1d20 1-10 It doesn't get a charge. 11-20 it does.
The gem is the size of a acorn. Smells of grapes.

Okay I’ve got a question:

If I make her 2 feet tall, which is logically the smallest a character can be and still meet the "small" parameters in reference to size … would she have to customize her crossbow and bolts to make them easier for her to wield? Cause I’m pretty sure a standard hand crossbow is half her size and I’m really not sure how to store that on her person. Plus bolts.

The way I see starting items, items in general, and magic items.

The starting item fits you. They are something you have collected or made to fit you.

Normal items you find will not fit for you. They will be too large, unless a tiny or very small-sized creature also uses them.


Magic items Resize to be comfortable for its users. A giant may use a large magic axe. You touch it, and it will shrink in size for you to hold.

Perfect, sounds good. I will just roll with her current equipment having been customized down to her size. As for the bolts, maybe she buys regular and halves them or whatever. I know this is mostly just flavor.

As for her fairiness, I wanted to see how you would rule on her flight. I know not all creatures that have flight can hover. Are fairies capable of hovering for the sake of staying in an eye line with conversations and such?

I also am curious about how backpacks work for flying creatures. This is my first time dabbling with a character that has wings (and is small) so please forgive me if it takes a little adjusting. I assume she wouldn’t be able to fly with a backpack on, so would her bag be more of a messenger bag worn strapped to her lower waist like a saddlebag or oversized waist belt?

You can flavor your backpack how ever you like.
It will not become a problem unless you are encumbered.
It can be a messenger bag, a hitchhiking stick, a few side pouch.

Did you consider how her flight would or wouldn’t translate to an ability to hover? I don’t want to break any mechanics of the game but it does seem to me like a fairy would have a capacity to hover above the ground, especially for purposes of conversation with taller creatures. But in previous games I’ve played, I know that one of the characters having a hover capacity would have made some of the puzzles much easier to solve due to items being high up. Though I suppose she is just at a higher threat for fall damage at that point. And she has negative strength so she won’t be able to do anything on her own if there’s any considerable weight to an object they are trying to reach.

For role-playing purposes, it will not matter. You can fly and flutter around however you wish. Wings raipidly flutter to keep her afloat to speak.
In combat, you do not have a hover. You can fly around however you wish. If you are knocked, you will fall to the ground and take fall damage.

I just wanted to make sure you were good with how I ordered combat.

I figured Briar was not expecting the armor to attack.
That was the main reason it had suprise.

Oh absolutely! Thanks for checking. She was not expecting armor. She would have been looking for conventional "traps" if anything. Sentient armor was nowhere near her radar, lol!

I, OOC, presume the fact that the coin was not dipped through the gross jar on the desk is the source of the rash. The items are probably enchanted and the wash is what removes it after purchase. Like the pin alarm on an expensive coat at the store. "Cleansing" the hourglass in the jar is probably her way of consenting to an item leaving the wagon after a purchase.

Briar, on the other hand (pun not intended), hasn't quite made that leap yet.

You are pretty much right about the coin.
The item is cursed. The curse wasn't washed away.
You will need to figure out a way to remove the curse.

If I remember correctly, you are not a fan of the psionic so Soulknife archetype is out of the running. With that in mind, I went Phantom. If, however, I am remembering incorrectly, I would prefer to do Souliknife.

Given how things went in the mansion, Briar wants to harness more quiet capabilities (psychic). But I'll also settle for her having been impacted by the amount of death in there giving her a tether to spirits (since she rolled pretty well talking to them) instead.

I went with average hit point advancement since I realized that is what I did for level 2.

I do not have a problem with the Psychic name or abilities.
I have just DMed so many games were players think that can do over powered thinks with their abilities just because they are Psychic.
It has kind of ruined it for me.

Jerinvar is Arcane Trickster.
I have never played with an Phantom Rogue. It could be interesting to see.
The Trinket feature at level 9 fits very well.

It is ultimatly up to you!

I also thought the trinkets at level 9 thing was very fitting for Briar. I’ll just stick with Phantom. It’s a subclass I don’t think I have ever seen anyone roll with. Plus I like the dichotomy of happy-fairy ghostly-rogue. I like to think Rose and Thorn had an effect on her. And even though they’re laid to rest, they’re still kinda with her.
