1. Cloakwood

The party wakes well-rested in the Iron Throne mining camp. There's plenty of food for them and the former prisoners, thanks to the guards' storehouse. The camp is a-bustle as everyone prepares for the journey through the Cloakwood, and to freedom. Given the party's travels into the strange forest and the size of the group they intend to escort out, it's a trip that's likely to take at least a couple of days.

The former prisoners (refugees now, really) don't have much in the way of travel packs, and there are no wagons or carts capable of making it through the Cloakwood intact, but they make do with what they can find in the camp and pack as much food and water as they can carry.

When all is ready, the large group assembles at the palisade gate.

And find a group of strangers arriving there at the same time.
Jan 20, 2024 12:58 am
The small group of strangers are well-equipped for both travel and battle. Several are decked out in heavy armor, two in studded leather, and one in the robes of an arcane spellcaster. All bear the crest of the Iron Throne.

(Perception: Two of the newcomers look familiar... Yes. Next to a big, red-haired man is none other than Ajantis, the traitor who abducted Aldous.

And there near the rear of the group is Shar-Teel. There's a sizeable bruise over one eye, and a deep cut on her lip. She doesn't look happy.)

The red-haired man steps forward. "Looks like we arrived late to the festivities." He rests his hands on his wide belt. "I reckon it's only fair you know the name of the new face in charge of this camp. I'm Drasus." His pale eyes look over the party and the gathered refugees. "I recommend you put my property back where you found it. And surrender your weapons, too. We don't want to put any would-be heroes in the ground today."

Seeing the Iron hand symbol Ida takes a protective step in front of Stephan and the other refugees. Looking over her shoulder she puts a finger to her lips gesturing for everyone to stay quiet as the atmosphere of unease grows. Turning back to the threatening party in front of them she slides her hand into her pocket and grabs a small piece of parchment with scriptures of protection on it. Ripping the parchment she whispers a prayer and a subtle shimmering field surrounds Dieter.

Aiwë stares Drasus down. There isn't any negotiating out of this one, or buying time either. Not with all the people they have with them. Her answer comes from just behind Drasus, within the center of their group, like an explosion.

"NO."

Aiwë casts Shatter at 4th level.

Aiwe's spell builds just between Drasus, Ajantis, and the priest, making cloaks and hair ripple as it prepares to erupt.

Shar-Teel, obviously pleased by the spectacle, lets out a mocking laugh. The archer behind her scowls. "Shut up, you, or I'll put an arrow in your back!" Shar-Teel snarls, but reluctantly draws her swords and takes up a defensive stance in front of the archer and mage.

Meanwhile, Drasus' head whips around to Ajantis. "I thought you said they were talkers, blast it!"

Ajantis' reply is to dive for cover.

Round 1 Player Phase!
OOC:
Okay, this fight's starting off with a bang!

We're dealing with some standard ranks:
Front (green) - Drasus, Ajantis, Priest
Mid (orange) - Shar-Teel
Rear (red) - Archer, Mage

Aiwe's Shatter spell is affecting the enemy's front rank, so Drasus, Ajantis, and Priest will have to make saves. This counts as Aiwe's action for the turn, but she's still got a bonus action and her movement, if she wants to use them.

Ida remains focused on her shield around Dieter but snaps her fingers causing an eruption of radiant fire to to erupt in a pillar at the center of the hostile party. A humanoid shape forms in the center of the pillar; the guardian.

Ida casts Guardian of Faith - A Large spectral guardian appears and hovers for the duration in an unoccupied space of your choice that you can see within range. The guardian occupies that space and is indistinct except for a gleaming sword and shield emblazoned with the symbol of your deity.
Any creature hostile to you that moves to a space within 10 feet of the guardian for the first time on a turn must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw. The creature takes 20 radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The guardian vanishes when it has dealt a total of 60 damage.

Round 1 Summary

Aiwe's spell detonates like the crack of a hundred whips! Drasus and Ajantis seem able to endure the terrible sound (15 thunder dmg each), but their priest starts bleeding from the ears (taking 31 thunder dmg) and holding his head - which leaves him unprepared for Koveras' sudden charge! In a show of strength, the half-orc punches through the priest's armor with his shortsword and scores a hit (Priest takes another 10 dmg).

Identifying Aiwe as a magical threat, the archer in the back holds an arrow close to his mouth and whispers to it, then launches it in Aiwe's direction. It's a well-placed shot, taking her right in the upper arm (Aiwe takes 14 dmg). For a moment Aiwe finds her grunt of pain stolen from her, magically silenced, but no one silences this bard. She mentally forces away the insidious enchantment, and even has the presence of mind to raise her shield and block a second incoming arrow.

On the front line, Dieter and Runeson test their strength against Drasus and Ajantis. Dieter and Drasus seem fairly well-matched, each executing daring maneuvers that the other just manages to avoid. Finally, Drasus catches Dieter in the face with a well-timed shield bash, with enough force nearly to lift the young fighter from his feet (Dieter takes 8 dmg). Thankfully, Runeson's bolstering presence keeps Dieter from being sprawled out on the ground (With Runeson's save bonus, Dieter passes his str save!). Instead, Dieter responds with two stinging blows on Drasus' spear-arm.

Meanwhile, Aldous focuses his attention on the enemy mage. The young Silvershield's customary fire snakes weave through the air to bite at the mage, their fangs burning cloth and searing flesh (Mage takes 19 fire dmg).

The enemy priest, already badly wounded, cries out a mighty prayer of healing (All enemies regain 20 hp). The spell spreads over him and his companions, closing wounds and strengthening spirits... until Runeson's radiant weapon smashes into the priest's helmeted head. Hoar blesses his paladin this day with a surge of divine power, and the priest drops dead with a sizzling hole in the side of his helmet (Priest dies).

Ajantis, who up to this point has bided his time, speaks the words of a spell that endows him with supernatural speed and grace (casts Haste on himself). He leaps forward faster than Runeson expects, but not faster than Dieter's shield. Just in time, the fighter turns aside Ajantis' flashing glaive, saving Runeson from a nasty wound (Ajantis would have had adv on this attack, but Dieter's Protection fighting style took that way. Miss!).

With the battle in full swing, Ida casts a mighty spell, summoning a celestial guardian in the middle of the enemy's front line. With a righteous, unyielding gaze, it waits for an enemy to provoke its considerable ire.

The enemy mage makes his move, conjuring an enormous spectral lion's head just behind the party's back line. The lion opens its mouth wide and roars, sending Stella and Aldous stumbling perilously close to the fighting on the front line (Stella and Aldous each take 24 thunder dmg and are pushed 15 ft forward). Ida is also rattled by the lion's roar, but her dwarf blood sings true as she holds her ground (Ida takes only 12 thunder dmg and is not pushed). Unfortunately though, the ordeal does cost Ida her attention, and she loses focus on her Shield of Faith spell Unless Ida can somehow turn her failed save into a success (via Inspiration or something), Shield of Faith is lost.

Through it all, Shar-Teel waits in front of the archer and mage. Her eyes flick among all the combatants, weighing and measuring...

Hearing the new mercenary's words and seeing Shar-teel and Ajantis fills Stella with a surprising, seething hatred, her eye-stars flaring red.

Her gaze softens briefly as she considers how they might be under geas like Viconia. Then it hardens again. Even a geas wouldn't explain nor excuse some of their unnecessarily harsh actions.

As the thunderous roar of a lion blasts her and Aldous forward, she guides much of its energy around her, but is unable to help Aldous. (Absorb Elements to reduce the thunder damage to 12)

She then raises her minor staff of fire, gathering energy at its tip like a star being born, then flings it at the back ranks. (Assuming the spell isn't counterspelled, Mage, Archer, and possibly Shar-teel must make DC 15 DEX save vs. 24 fire damage; half damage on successful save)

Then, holding her tome, Stella uses sweeping motions with the staff to draw out the constellation of a bear. As she does, a polar bear materializes from stardust behind the mage and begins to maul. (Mage takes 22 piercing / slashing damage and two DC 10 CON saves to maintain concentration.)

She finishes by drawing the constellation of a small dragon around herself, its wisdom and might sharpening her focus. (Starry Form: Dragon. Stella can't roll less than a 10 on her CON saves to maintain concentration.)

Round 2 Summary

Stella's fireball explodes! The archer tries to dive aside, but to no avail (Archer fails his save, takes 24 fire dmg). He survives the explosion, but the burns on his face and neck speak to his agony. The mage's robes are singed, but he otherwise looks to have weathered the fire spell much better than his companion (Mage casts Absorb Elements, takes only 12 fire dmg).

On the front line, Runeson can't seem to land a hit on Ajantis. The traitor's hasted form just seems to always be one step ahead... and there's more treacherous magic at work. Runeson swings hard at Ajantis' mocking face, only at the last second seeing that, somehow, he's swinging at Dieter instead! (Ajantis uses Treacherous Strike, forcing Runeson to reroll a missed attack and direct it towards Dieter) The warhammer crunches against Dieter's pauldron, badly bruising the shoulder beneath (Dieter takes 10 bludgeoning dmg).

As Runeson struggles to come to terms with what's happened, Ajantis suddenly presses the advantage! His glaive sweeps and slashes, but it's the assault on Runeson's mind that causes the most harm. Suddenly unable to tell friend from foe, Runeson's mind involuntarily conjures images of Dieter turning to attack him. As the paladin defends against the imaginary attack, Ajantis brings an overhead blow down hard on Runeson's helmet, accompanied by a sickly radiance that burns and corrupts (Ajantis uses Divine Smite, Runeson takes 8 slashing and 8 radiant dmg).

"You're not the only one who can divinely smite their enemies," Ajantis murmurs to Runeson, then in a sudden blur stabs him through the chest with his glaive (Another Divine Smite, Runeson takes 14 slashing and 12 radiant dmg). "Although..." face just inches from Runeson's, "I've always thought a little... poison worked just as well." (Runeson takes 29 poison dmg and is unconscious and dying)

Another explosion shakes the ground and air as Aiwe unleashes another thunder spell. Drasus merely tosses his head and roars (Drasus takes 10 thunder dmg), but Ajantis seems shaken for a moment (Ajantis takes 20 thunder dmg).

A ferocious bellow and a human scream suddenly ring through the air, as the enemy mage is mauled by Stella's conjured polar bear. In a panic, the mage casts a teleportation spell, moving himself to relative safety on the palisade. Aldous launches a stream of fire up at the mage, but given the palisade's protection it's not very effective. From there, the mage pulls an ornate wand from his sleeve and throws a fire bolt each at Ida and Stella. Stella is largely unhurt, but Ida takes the bolt straight to the face.

"No! Ida!" Stephan, who until this point has kept back with the refugees, pulls out a certain familiar tome and opens it. The mageling points up at the enemy spellcaster and utters a string of dark, misshapen syllables. The mage keels over dead, black smoke rising from empty eye sockets.

Even burned as she is, Ida digs deep and releases a wave of spiritual light, singeing Ajantis (Ajantis takes 5 radiant dmg).

Severely burned and with an angry white bear nearby, the archer tries his best to silence some of the party's spellcasters. He looses an arrow each at Stella and Aiwe, but both projectiles fall harmlessly short. He turns in panic to Shar-Teel. "You! Get the bear!"

But Shar-Teel has other plans. She moves as if to approach the bear, but then turns and rushes the archer, blades whirling (Archer takes 8 dmg). "You shouldn't have forced me to come here, fool!"

With a cruel grin, Ajantis moves to finish off collapsed Runeson... only to find Dieter's shield in the way. To make things worse, Koveras joins the young fighter, and the two of them press Ajantis hard, until finally with some dazzling swordplay Dieter sends the traitor's glaive soaring through the air to land some distance away. Unarmed and facing these two dangerous opponents, Ajantis turns tail and runs, his haste spell lending him supernatural swiftness (I took the liberty of making an opportunity attack for Dieter, but it missed).

Still, Ajantis finds his cowardice punished by Ida's guardian of faith, who lashes out at the fleeing traitor with a beam of light. He manages to dodge some of it, but still grunts in pain as he continues his sprint (Ajantis takes 10 radiant dmg). A second speedy blur takes off after him as Koveras gives chase, making use of whatever magic or item gives him such quickness. The two race into the forest, dodging tree trunks and leaping fallen branches.

Before Dieter can think to pursue, he's beset by Drasus, whose spear tears into the young fighter (Dieter takes 13 piercing dmg). "You're gonna die here, boy!" Drasus' back smokes from Ida's guardian of faith, but he doesn't seem to care (Drasus takes 10 radiant dmg).

"Look around Drasus. You won't survive this." Aiwë gets in Drasus' face and her words echo in his ears, coming from everywhere at once. "Surrender! The Iron Throne and its god will not honour or remember you. This ruined mine isn't worth your life. Lay down your weapon, and the pain will stop."

It feels like a shard of ice pierces Ida's heart as she watches the vicious blows come against Runson and collapse under the barrage. She silently thanks the gods as Dieter steps in front of their fallen friend. As she's distracted in her horror and hope she misses the fireball cast by the mage, her nerves scream in pain as it makes contact with her skin. She barely registers Stephan's magic but a small part of her brain makes a note to ask him about it at a later time. Doing her best to ignore her injuries, her skin painful with each movement where her skin bubbles with burns and blisters. Moving quickly to Runeson she plants her shield in the ground in front of them, assessing the wounds she can see Ida moves her hands over each while pleading with Lythander to breathe life back into the fallen hero. Runeson Is healed for 15 HP

Round 3 Summary

The Morninglord's healing power flows through Ida's hands into Runeson's wounds, closing them up and getting the paladin back on his feet.

Then, with so many of the enemies down, the rest of the fight goes quickly.

As the archer does his best to fight off Stella's bear (bear takes 23 dmg), Shar-Teel suddenly leaps on the man's back and drives her reversed shortswords down into his shoulders. There's no recovering from that (archer's dead). She tumbles away from the body and springs back to her feet.

Drasus delivers some wounds to Dieter that will surely leave scars (Dieter takes 34 dmg), but the young fighter simply will not drop. When Aiwe's last offer of surrender fills him finally with fear for his life, the big red-haired man throws down his spear and shield, then submits to being bound.

Once she feels that everyone is stable she works her way back to Stephan. She looks over him before asking "May I see your spell book?"
Jan 23, 2024 8:25 pm
Stella sighs gratefully as power from Ida seals her wounds and soothes her aches and pains. "Thank you, Ida."

Stella nods to Aiwë. "If we go now, I can certainly try. He'll be slower in the long run than a wolf, but if he meets up with Viconia, she might teleport him away. Although...I would...rather not be in there alone..." she says, looking a bit abashed.

Before the arrivals came to the camp, Stella explained what she could to Aiwë and anyone else who asked regarding her grim portent and fearful flight into the forest. She was still shaken by it, but felt she had a slightly better understanding now.

Shar-Teel cleans her swords off on the archer's trousers. "Ajantis? I don't really know the guy. But my guess would be the Gate. It's not too far, at least once you get out of this nasty forest."
Jan 23, 2024 9:05 pm
Aldous intervenes. "Perhaps we should just let him go." He looks back and forth between Stella and Aiwe. "Look, nobody wants that traitor dealt with more than I do. But I have a couple of concerns..."

He holds up a finger. "The Shadow Druids. They're unpredictable. They don't want us in their territory, and now with the mine taken care of they've got no reason to keep us around. And our last interaction with them..." he looks at Dieter, "didn't end so well. And now we have all these refugees... Do we really want to risk anyone going off from the main group? Besides, maybe the Shadow Druids will take care of Ajantis for us."

He raises a second finger. "Ajantis is dangerous. He took down one of our toughest warriors in just a few seconds." He takes a deep breath. "I don't want Stella anywhere near him. Especially not without our entire party there to back her up." The young Silvershield shrugs apologetically at Koveras. "Would I really want to put two of my closest friends in his path?"

Stephan swallows hard, then wordlessly shows Ida the spellbook. On its cover is the same symbol of Bhaal that the party saw in Davaeorn's altar room: a grinning skull encircled by droplets of blood.

Ida hasn't seen a symbol like this in a long time, but it looks suspiciously similar to the symbol of the Blood Skulls, a cult she's had some experience dealing with in the past.
Jan 23, 2024 9:16 pm
Aiwë blinks as Aldous speaks. "He's weakened and spent, and I worry what payback he'll be able to muster... but you're right. He's not worth the risk right now." She shakes her head, rubbing her temples. "Sorry, my head isn't on right today." She gives a self-deprecating grimace to Koveras and Stella, a sort of 'sorry, thanks anyway.'

"Let's get moving. Drasus can talk on the way."

Ida tries to suppress the chill that runs down her spine and involuntarily takes a step back. Seeing the symbols and iconography in the book she knew they were directly opposite of Lythander and all his light stood for. "Stephan do you know which diety that symbol belongs to? Have you made a pact with them?" Concern growing in her eyes. I need you to be honest about what you know and what's happened since your time here... Someone I knew was once was caught up in something similar" Ida sees the rest of the group getting ready to head out with their captive and motions for Stephan to come with her "We can talk as we leave the woods, I'm not upset I'm just worried about what you may have gotten yourself into"
Jan 23, 2024 9:31 pm
Dieter puts Drasus’s face in the dirt so his arms and legs are up in the air freeing him to stand beside Aiwë. He doesn’t say anything.
Jan 23, 2024 10:52 pm
Shar-Teel scowls. "I was running away from my employers. The Iron Throne's bitten off more than it can chew. I don't want any part of it."

She leans casually against a tree. "But if you lot are in need of an extra swordarm, my coin purse is feeling a bit light these days."
Jan 23, 2024 10:57 pm
Stephan certainly looks ashamed of himself. "Well, I heard some of your friends say it's the symbol of the God of Murder, or something like that. I just thought the spellbook might be worth some money, and nobody else seemed to want it. So I grabbed it on our way out."

He bites his lip. "Well, I guess not just for some money. It was Master Davaeorn's spellbook. I thought maybe I could learn all the stuff he never bothered to teach me..."
Jan 23, 2024 11:08 pm
Dieter turns his back on Shar-teel, Its purposeful maybe even disrespectful

"We could pay her to get these refugees out " Dieter quietly says looking down at Aiwë
Jan 23, 2024 11:37 pm

Stella frowns, trying to follow Shar-Teel's words, ignoring the harshness from Dieter and Aiwë. She speaks matter-of-factly, though she's not sure how Shar-Teel will take it.

"I may be misunderstanding...but if you were simply running away, you wouldn't have come back. Your sword goes where the money tells you, provided you get to keep your neck in one piece. That's rather sensible," she continues, gesturing with one hand. "And your vote of confidence is appreciated. But that seems awfully risky for us. If you don't want anything to do with the Iron Throne, then you'll want to get far from the Gate, not tag along.'"

Shar-Teel rolls her eyes. "Does it look like I wanted to come back?" She gestures to her black eye and split lip. "I was nearly out of this hells-forsaken wood when I ran into these goons." She spits in Drasus' direction. "They turned me right around to march back to this mine - which I see you've flooded, by the way. Waste of good iron."
Quote:
"If you don't want anything to do with the Iron Throne, then you'll want to get far from the Gate, not tag along."
Shar-Teel scoffs. "I meant as far as getting out of this forest goes. You've got an awful lot of friends to keep from becoming spider-food - not that any one of them would offer a proper meal." She chuckles. "Plus, the Gate is where the gold is. It's big enough I don't need to tangle with the Iron Throne. Hells, I could just keep my head down till this whole thing blows over."

Stella draws her lips to a line and nods, seeing the logic, finding herself agreeing with it. She looks to the others for their thoughts.
Jan 24, 2024 12:29 am

I thank Ida as I slowly get up.
"Thank you Ida. And thank you Dieter for your protection."

I turn to Shar-Teel.
"Money can’t be the only thing that kept you from calling the guards on us or joining the fight on their side. What aren’t you telling us?"
Jan 24, 2024 12:56 am
Dieter turns back around "we don’t need to pay her anything. If Drasus could find her any spider or wyvern can and will. She needs us to get out of here. I think she needs us more than we need her"
Jan 24, 2024 1:21 am
Araklusta says:
He bites his lip. "Well, I guess not just for some money. It was Master Davaeorn's spellbook. I thought maybe I could learn all the stuff he never bothered to teach me..."
Ida steps closer putting her hand on Stephans "I don't think this book will bring anything but pain and damnation to you and those around you. If you wish to learn more of magic maybe talk to the young lord Aldolous I believe he is also a student of the arcane" She looks up with a small warm smile on her lips "You have a good heart Stephan, if you'd like I can speak with the clergy at the temple and find you a proper teacher if you don't continue your journey with us."

Quote:
"How much are you asking per day?" Stella asks flipping open her ledgers.
Shar-Teel makes an exaggerated show of puzzling out the math. "Well, a good sword costs about 10 gold pieces, and I have two. As well as the skill and experience to use them well... I'd say that puts us at about 30 gold a day."
Quote:
"Money can’t be the only thing that kept you from calling the guards on us or joining the fight on their side. What aren’t you telling us?"
She puts the back of her hand to her forehead. "Oh, you caught me. I have an illegitimate son fathered by a corrupt officer among the Flaming Fist. If I don't live to get home, he'll grow up in his father's footsteps..."

She spits. "Money - specifically gold - is everything to me. I don't need some righteous oath as an excuse."
Quote:
"we don’t need to pay her anything. If Drasus could find her any spider or wyvern can and will. She needs us to get out of here. I think she needs us more than we need her"
"So the pup's found his bark." She smirks at Dieter. "The only thing I might need you for is a place to sheathe my blades. Or try out a new poison..."

The woman turns back to Stella. "Finished your calculations yet, little miss?"

(Insight: Shar-Teel does like gold. But beneath it all, it seems like her primary philosophy in life is that an overwhelming offense compensates for a poor defense. She has painful secrets, and she doesn't want to share them. Insults are her way of keeping the attention focused where she thinks she can handle it.)
Jan 24, 2024 2:08 am
Stella smirks at Shar-Teel's sword math despite herself. She's tempted to make a smart remark and turn the woman's words back on her, but Stella holds back, getting the sense that Shar-Teel wouldn't respond well to insults as easily as she gave them out.

"Twenty five," she replies, making a note, "from my personal funds, she clarifies to the other party members, since none of them seemed too pleased about the arrangement. "Paid when we make it out of the Cloakwood." She hoped it was enough to show she wasn't a pushover, but making it still plenty to let Shar-Teel feel it's worth her while and then some.

On the way out of the destroyed mine, I take a louder tone and ask, "any who desire to learn how to do a little bit of woodworking, just let me know and I’ll teach you a few pointers while we’re on the road. This could be a helpful skill that could change your lives either through the craftsmanship itself or by giving you a skill for your future endeavors."
From my bag I pull out a small wooden horse that I have been working on.
OOC:
If I get a good group of people I proceed to show them safety first, blood circles, different tricks and tips of how to hold the wood and knife. The different tools and how to use them. I also make a mental note to buy more woodworking tools in the next town we go to.
I continue,"for those more interesting in learning horsemanship, I am more than willing to teach you how to ride and tips on how to keep you and your horse healthy and happy.

With a slight flourish, I summon Tulco and give a small display of my horsemanship. Somehow coming off as expert but not showing off more than I have to.
OOC:
For horsemanship I will show them how safety, saddle and equipment maintenance and repair, some horse training exercises and how to tell if a horse is healthy or not.

Stella casts her eyes down slightly at Aiwë's question. "I think so, yes." She grimaces. "I could have stopped Ajantis' escape...I think I had a premonition of it. But I misread it. I'm certain this power will be useful, but...it's frustrating how much confusion it caused me...and everyone else...and how little I understand how to use it."

She opens her mouth to say more but shuts it and exhales. Parts of her mind kept drifting back to the comforting numbness of the Shadowfell and the lethargic daze she was in during her conversation with Viconia. She broke out of it, but...there was something strangely appealing about it. She didn't want to worry Aiwë more than she already was, however.

"Thanks for watching out for me. And never giving up on me," she says instead, giving a genuine smile. She glances over to Aiwë. "How are you doing? You've seemed a little more...terse lately. Not that there's anything wrong with being terse or tense or anything...! Just, um...You know. You're so strong in every way. I just hope you're not hurting yourself by trying to carry your own pack and everyone else's."

"I don't know, he wasn't clear about anything except that he was self-consumed. I'm so—so!" Had they been more alone, Aiwë might have shrieked. Instead she grabs Stella's hand.

Stella starts at the drum beat and winces as Aiwë grabs her hand tightly. She lowers her voice to almost a whisper and cranes her head to look at Aiwë. "Isn't he, like, twice your age? I mean, Arannis was like, ten times Saki's age when they got married...but I feel like it's a bit different for elves..."

She shakes her head and places her other hand on Aiwë's and meets her eyes. "He's gone through a lot the last couple of tendays as well. Many intense emotions. That can heighten feelings of connection. I've...had a bit of that too..." she says nodding her head to the side and smile sheepishly. "He's found hope in you. And you are pretty amazing." She raises her eyebrows to emphasis "are". She shakes her head again. "So it makes sense. But Snapple Gobs...that does sound...uncomfortable...what did he say? And what you do?"

Aiwë laughs lightly, but it's strained. "Yeah, my parents have a similar age gap. But no, he's not got more than half a decade on me, I don't think. You're not used to the orc blood, or the fact that he never smiles." She mutters the last under her breath.
Quote:
"What did he say? And what you say back?"
"He said I was a 'beauty enough to make e'en a siren sigh.' How fortunate he must have felt about that fact, because he followed it up by saying I was his only option." Aiwë grinds her teeth.

"I told him he was confused, that I wasn't what he wanted. He said I make him 'want to be more.'" Her laugh is frenzied. "Of course of I do! I make everyone want to be more! It's my whole job!"

She drops her voice low and gesticulates sharply in front of her. "I bang my drum in battle, encouraging everyone to be strong and brave. I soothe them at night so that they can sleep and wake up better. I tell stories to inspire and give uplifting examples. I persuade captives to give up their old ways and proclaim judgement when they will not." Aiwë swipes her hand like a falling axe. She swallows hard.

"I keep myself in control as best I can, so my example is not contradictory. So I don't besmirch our family, and what they've worked so hard for. So that I don't burden those I am working to uplift." Her hands fall loose finally, no rhythm or movement left.

"I'm glad I gave him hope. It's what I wanted. It's what Im supposed to do. But I'm not the path to it. Not a prize at the end of it. Still... if he only saw the story I told, and not me... then that's not his fault. I did my job. A bard shouldn't be more prominent than her tale. I'm invisible by design."

Stella remembers how harshly Aiwë backlashed when Stella and Calliope and suggested they lay low and Aiwë avoid performing. Stella hadn't been sure what she wanted to be. Meanwhile Aiwë knew exactly what she wanted to be...and couldn't afford herself to be anything less.

But...if Aiwë got what she wanted in giving him hope, and she managed to speak her mind...why was she so upset?

"You...think he's not really seeing you." Stella states tentatively. "You're...always putting on a show. You have to." She looks softly at Aiwë to gauge her reaction, her eye-stars a soft violet.

Aiwë rubs her eyes. "Yeah..." she admits quietly. "It's not just him, he just... said the wrong words at the wrong time. Everyone has their head so consumed with their own problems, they don't see anyone else's. I... I can't be mad they didn't see what I hid from them."
Jan 25, 2024 1:42 am
Stella puts an arm around Aiwë as they walk. "I mean...you can. But it wouldn't help anything. Talking about it might, though. Thanks for telling me. I'm...sorry if I haven't been there for you. Thank you for being there for me."

She pauses for a moment. "...May I ask what you have been 'hiding'? What you want to let people see, but can't?"
Jan 25, 2024 3:25 am
Aiwë leans into her gently. "I feel out of place here, sticking my nose into someone else's war. The only Blood here is Koveras and he's not sure what that means for him yet. And the Blacksheaf's moonblade hates me! I shouldn't care but I do. It's practically family. Maybe that's why Xan left so soon. I can't think about it too much, everyone needs me strong. You're all dealing with your own problems, someone needs to help." Her voice falls to a whisper.

"But mostly... Every time I close my eyes I see Keggruk's face over my shoulder, dead and lolling with Gruumsh's Mark. Who next? What if I can't carry them to safety next time?"

"I'd say it became our war when they sent assassins after us for just showing up in Candlekeep..." Stella replies. "I still don't understand why..." she muses.
Quote:

Stella frowns. "Why does the moonblade hate you? Mixed blood?" she guesses.
Quote:

Stella frowns, processing the event with a clearer head now than when it happened. People knew they were coming to Candlekeep...Kreggruk's book paid their price of entry. Whoever they faced on the road that night certainly wasn't any normal group of bandits, especially given the fact they left Gruumsh's Mark...it seemed so specific and intentional.

She thinks over what she heard about Rieltar and Koveras.

Was Rieltar...trying to make it seem like Gruumsh hadn't been defeated by the Avatars of the Triad? That orc-kind hadn't actually been freed from his influence? Publicly display a half-orc being embraced into society. Lure in the man who wrote the book on the Cagebreakers. Drive him out into the woods with an assassin after his almost-daughter. Mark him. Call the book a bunch of lies whether he stays dead or not. Send assassins after the young adults to stop them from more meddling. What would be next? Stage or stoke orc aggression, sow fear, and rally people against them? They could spin Koveras' betrayal to that end too...and...What about the orcs back home? Would the mark sow doubt in the orc-blooded there?

If...enough people believed in a god, did that bring them back to power? Were there any connections between Bhaal and Gruumsh?

Stella reels slightly, blinking several times from all the jumps in logic her mind. She was probably just ice fishing for connections that weren't there...but some of those things could be possible. Either way, she was starting to regret how she purposely avoided religious studies growing up.

Aiwë sees this, that something she said has gotten Stella thinking deeply. The white-haired girl shakes her head as if to clear it, however. Aiwë needed someone to listen, not spout theories right now.

"That's...that's horrible." she says finally. "I'm so sorry. How do you even sleep?"

"The ancient heirloom blade of the elven Blacksheaf line considers my orc-blooded self an abomination." Aiwë watches the thoughts race through Stella's mind.

"Ada showed me how he trances. It doesn't work the same way for me, obviously, but it puts me to sleep when I'm anxious. Nightmares end when the morning comes." She shrugs. "Mostly." Aiwë sighs and rights herself.

"Thanks for listening. I do feel a bit better. I do want to hear all those thoughts you've had spinning just now. Maybe this afternoon." She stretches her hands and some rhythm begins to return to them.

"I'm ready to talk about something else for a bit." She looks at Stella sideways.

"On a scale of one to ten where one is 'barely acquainted' and ten is 'the stuff of ballads,' how in love with you would you say Aldous is?"

Stella grimace-smiles, eye-stars shifting to pink and giggles. "I don't know...That's quite the scale. If you mean how infatuated is he, maybe a seven? Five or less would be disinterest...He's definitely interested, but not quite ballad-level. I mean...maybe protecting him from a thrown tree and helping to rescue him from mercenary imprisonment...I don't know, is that ballad level?"

She contorts her face in thought. But those don't describe his level of 'in love'-ness. I..." She laughs. "I'm sorry, I don't understand this scale is supposed to work."

Aiwë laughs, face brightening significantly. "You're right, it wasn't a good scale. How about one is 'not interested' and ten is 'making marriage plans.'"
Jan 25, 2024 9:55 pm
"Ah! We can work with that," Stella smiles. "Ajantis had bet he'd propose by the end of the tenday. Thankfully, that didn't happen...So I'm thinking maybe a seven or eight? He's so...open and genuine! At least I think so..." she frowns, thinking about how good of a liar he was in front of Stephan. She shakes her head and blinks a few times. "He compliments me on so many things. We connect well, I think. And he seemed so worried about and caring for me last night." She shrugs. "So yes, I suppose a seven or eight might be fitting. Let's say seven and a half."
Jan 25, 2024 10:08 pm
"After his rescue, I would have agreed with Ajantis," Aiwë laughs, "but he and I had a talk about focusing on the task at hand and not getting stabbed or running into danger because he can't stop looking at you. He seems to have taken it to heart. He's impressed me lately." Aiwë walks into Stella, bumping her slightly with her hip, expression mischievously innocent. "I'd rate his affections a solid ten."
Jan 25, 2024 11:35 pm
Stella stumbles a bit in her pace and raises both eyebrows incredulously, eye-stars speckled pink, yellow, and green, a strange mix of embarrassment, elation, and curiosity. "You had to talk him out of looking at me so much?" She blinks a few times. "Wow. I...did not expect that. Well...thank you!"
Quote:
"I'd rate his affections a solid ten."
The yellow and green eye-stars mix to sickly green and she inhales and covers her face. "Nooo, stop...He isn't...!"

She moans quietly then slides her hands down and off her face and whispers. "Those plans had better be after we're done trying to stop a war and have a chance to actually court..." She did not want to explain to him...and did not want Aiwë to point out how Mama and Papa met and got married in a concerningly short time also while trying to fight and stop a war.

"I had to talk a sense of self-preservation into the man. No more tears from you over him! I felt like I was talking to a wall for a while there, but such are your charms." Aiwë pats her back comfortingly.

"I think he has a bit more sense now about timing and such things, buuuut when we first met I sang him the ballads about our parents and, well..." Aiwë catches the look on Stella's face and ceases that train of thought.

"He'll probably be annoyed like I'm ratting him out or something, but I have to warn you: he's been fighting to earn my blessing to marry you and, well..." Aiwë grimaces apologetically. "Last night I gave it." She holds up her hands defensively. "I told him he didn't need it, that you could and would make your own decisions regardless of what I thought, but since I'm your only family around he was pretty determined about it." She laces her arm through Stella's.

"I thought you should know. It's not a judgement from me on whether you should or not and if so, when, or anything like that, just that I think he's a good man." She nods. "A good man."

Stella tilts her head from side to side as Aiwë pats her back. She had gotten very emotional about him, hadn't she?

"That's...actually quite comforting that you think so. Stella nods and exhales. "Thank you." She closes her eyes for a bit as they continue and tries not to think too hard about it, but her mind keeps drifting back to Aldous.

"Well. We should probably get back to our positions and keep our eyes out for danger.," she says finally. "As for my thoughts, I have some...wild theories about the assassins. I'll tell you at lunch."

Later at lunch
By necessity, lunch isn't the most elaborate nor tasty of meals. Mostly just travel biscuits and jerky, slightly rehydrated with some extra spices.

Stella hacks and chokes on hers, then pounds her chest. "Rhhmmm. Ack. I...look forward to cooking an actual meal this evening..."

"So! Crazy theories," Stella says, perking up and turning to Aiwë. "I'm probably missing a lot, but hear me out...Imagine you see one of the most prominent guildmasters in the entire Sword Coast adopt a half-orc. You also hear that an orog came to Candlekeep with a book about being free from Gruumsh's influence. That half-orc violently betrays the guildemaster and that orog leaves Candlekeep and gets murdered and left with the mark of Gruumsh." She gestures a hand towards Aiwë. "How's that going to make people think of the orc-blooded? Of Gruumsh?"

"Interesting theory…though I don’t fully understand the implications.." Dieter says while mixing his biscuit and crumbled meat ration in a cup of water. "Stella, could we get a dog when we get back to the Inn?" Dieter asks hoping she’s distracted enough to say yes.
Feb 1, 2024 2:13 am
"That's not the theory, that's a visualization," she says speaking speedily. She pauses, squints, and tilts her head. "And if you can find an already-trained dog for sale at the inn, sure I guess?"

"Anyways," she says shaking her head. "I suspect it would make people suspicious or fearful of orc-blooded, and that Gruumsh wasn't defeated by the Avatars of the Triad, or at least that he's back and still very much in power. Stars, even the orcs and orogs back home might start to question it all...Why exactly Reitler would want that? I'm not sure...But if what happened to Keggruk was very specifically planned, though–which it was according to Viconia—" she says looking to Aiwë, "orcs are the only common thread I see here. You lure one of the most prominent Cagebreakers to Candlekeep, target his almost-daughter with an assassin to get him to leave so he can be assassinated and marked. It was almost certainly planned before we even arrived! After that, you send out a bounty to stop the young adventurers from halting Iron Throne activity."

She folds her arms and turns to Ida. "Are...Gruumsh and Bhaal related in any way, Ida?" she asks the cleric. "And do 'dead' gods come back to...'life' if enough people believe in and fear them?"

Aiwë frowns deeply. "Its a story that makes sense." She scoffs as Stella asks Ida bout Bhaal and Gruumsh. "They both liked grisly violence, and now they're both dead."

She thinks it over. "Why Wirrow though? She's his human stepdaughter who rejects him. I'm his actual niece, orc-blooded, and daughter of the woman half his book is about. Presumably—I haven't actually read it." She grins good-naturedly Koveras. "Wouldn't I make more sense as a target if the orc-blood story was all that was wanted? Or if they just needed him out, they could have attacked any of us. Yet, even after he died, it was Wirrow targeted first at the Friendly Arm Inn."

From what Ida understands, a large portion of a living god's power comes from the number and faith of its followers. A dead god receives nothing from its former flock, no matter how many might believe in it.

And yet...

Ida has some familiarity with Bhaal and the cults that still praise his name. Indeed, at some point in her past helping Tulfgyr, she came across a saying particularly revered by the Blood Skulls. A scripture originally spoken by a renowned prophet:

The Lord of Murder shall perish, but in his doom he shall spawn a score of mortal progeny. Chaos will be sown from their passage. So sayeth the wise Alaundo.

The words rise up from Ida's memory, and they remind her that even after a god's death, they can continue to influence the world. And apparently Bhaal himself fathered a 'score of mortal progeny'. If there are indeed literal children of Bhaal, could one of them possibly attain enough power to become the new Lord of Murder?

It's a chilling thought.

Ida speaks the scripture a little more than a whisper as it comes to her mind scared that even uttering the words would cause some unknown action to come to pass. She looks back up at Stella "We may be in over our heads" before discussing the thoughts she just had

"We've always been in over our heads," Stella says, barely reacting to the grim words. She holds he hands up and outstretched. "And I might not be right about the whole gathering power bit. And maybe this Alaundo isn't so wise." She pauses, then her expression turns grim. "But if Bhaal had children...Rieltar is likely one, right? Viconia said..." Stella flips to her notes of what Aiwë recounted to them. "...'God-like power runs through his veins.'" She grimaces and furrows her brow.

"She also said Keggruk specifically needed to die...not that he needed to be marked...that could have been done without killing him." She bites her lip in deep concentration. 'To stop the schemes at play, you must find out why...and who else may be at risk'..." She groans and plants her face in her tome, spilling some of her rations from her lap. "Is it blood-related? Do the weapons matter? Do they need to kill and draw part of their soul or something?" Stella sits up and flips through more pages. "No...she was on the first bounty list we found...It didn't matter to them who did it or how. Why would they need him to die? Well, there goes my whole theory..."

Stella shakes her head and closes her tome. "We need more information. If we could just find Viconia, we could break the geas and she could tell us!" She sniffs a laugh and glances at Aiwë. "If she's anything like Nym, we shouldn't have too much of a problem running into her again."

She contorts her face, still thinking. "Maybe Ida could cast Sending and we could make the offer and work out some kind of meeting with Viconia that doesn't kill her...? And...that wouldn't lead to a deadly ambush for us..."

Aiwë rubs her face. "Maybe I'm thinking too far into Keggruk's wound. Right behind your eye is your brain, it's a good way to kill someone. It's just... we avoid that method, because of what it means to us. But maybe his killers didn't think anything of it. Maybe they just took pleasure in being a little extra cruel. It might not be related."

She begins pacing, drumming her fingers on her crossed arms.

"I think we're on the right track with Rieltar though. Power hungry, cruel, murderer, worships Bhaal. He could be one of these... Bhaalspawn..." She nods, it's got a good ring. "He could be Bhaalspawn, or just thinks he is. It's equally dangerous."

She looks over her friends with determination. "We'll crack this. Heroes are always in over their heads." Aiwë smiles reassuringly at Stella. "Our parents always were."

The words of prophecy Ida spoke prick a memory in Stella's sharp mind. She's heard these words spoken before, in Candlekeep:

There are perhaps a dozen other people walking about in the Court of Air, most of them Avowed. A small procession of Avowed make their way around the Court, reciting some cryptic words: "...the Lord of Murder shall perish, but in his doom he shall spawn a score of mortal progeny. Chaos will be sown from their passage. So sayeth the wise Alaundo..."

It occurs to her that Alaundo the Seer did in fact make Candlekeep his home, and his words are still studied and pondered there today.
OOC:
The above 'flashback' actually belongs to Ossein, but I'm sure Stella would have heard the same while passing through the Court of Air, and given her high Investigation check she remembers the experience clearly!

"Alaundo..." Her eyes widen. "Wait! I've heard those words before! Candlekeep. I was passing through the Court of Air. Avowed were chanting it. I think Alaundo lived at Candlekeep." She furrows her brow again. "I'm...not sure what that means for us...Maybe there are more prophecies there? Someone at Candlekeep had to have been involved in the assassins, but we already suspected that...But I guess this is one more thread tying things together."
Feb 2, 2024 2:20 am
"I mean we can always send a letter out to Candlekeep for more information. What's the worst they can do? not write back." Ida says although in her mind there are far worse outcomes she chooses to keep to herself mostly out of paranoia rather then them actually being a real chance or threat.

Stella considers. "Mmmm...I suppose...It's not like assassins have had a hard time finding us anyway...Research inquiries usually come with a charge, but that's not much of an issue. I'll draft a letter. Perhaps we can send it when we get to Baulder's Gate. I wouldn't want Bently to be on the receiving end of an assassin interception, and we'll need some kind of non-implicative return address. Prophecies regarding Gruumsh and Bhaal and relations between them...anything else we should ask about?"
Feb 8, 2024 5:50 pm
Ida shakes her head as she retrieves some parchment and opens a small box containing a quill and some tightly corked indigo ink "I don't believe there's anything else we would need to ask about right now." Handing the supplies over to Stella "and hopefully it remains that straightforward."
Feb 13, 2024 8:09 pm
Stella nods and drafts a letter, planning to send it sometime when the reach Baulder's Gate.

...

Later while one the road, numerous giant spiders attack the caravan. Per her word, Shar-Teel proves helpful in the fight with the blinding speed of her blades, cutting down many. Through arachnids, arrows, blades, and blood, the party manages to keep everyone safe, or address the wounds and poisons that afflict those bitten. Stella tends to wounds, thanking Shar-Teel for her efforts, despite knowing she'd only get some sardonic refute in response—she was used to that kind of talk anyway.

When they exit the Cloakwood a couple days later, Stella pays Shar-Teel the agreed-upon amount, cheekily wishing her and her 'little son' well.
