Kaaric and Cousins

Feb 3, 2024 4:28 pm
MoyenBateau says:
Hello all. I am happy to be joining your adventure and hopefully we will meet somewhere on the Shattered Lands one day.

Kaarik is a noble elf, youngish but already well into adulthood, he lived a life of idleness in the elf community. His lineage allowed him to focus on his education as a child and reading books now that he is now a grown elf. As all elf nobles, he received the best of theoretical education.
Books allowed him to escape and learn about the world and different species that inhabit it.

Contrary to his kin and the other members of his class, Kaarik is an idealist who dreams of a world where all species would live in harmony once more and where they could all me named "The People".
His book studies assure him that there will be a world where all beings can live equally and in peace.

He is upset with his kin for not acting and decides that it is time for him to pack his books and do something to make all beings a little bit more equals.
OOC:
@MoyenBateau Your story begins here
Feb 3, 2024 4:45 pm
As Kaaric finishes packing he hears a noise at his door and it opens. Turning to see who is bold enough to enter his private chambers without the courtesy of knocking and asking permission first he sighs as he sees his cousins. The only other ones of his house anywhere near is age they were often pushed together to "strengthen their familial ties" Kaarik often thought that his cousins had been instructed to keep he away from the family leaders and resented him for it.
Annarrgeal
Well now, I heard rumors you might be even more foolish than I thought. Just what exactly do you thing you are doin? Annarrgeal asks, leaning against the doorway. Annarrgeal has always been fawned on by the family for his skills in spell weaving and is very smart, Kaarik admits to himself, but also a bit too proper and full of himself and his place in the family and the families place in the world

Filling the other side of the door stands Aldon, who likely is the one to open the door. Annarrgeal always covers for Aldon but comes down hard reporting even the slightest infraction Kaarik mades to the family elders or household steward. This infuriates Kaarik as monst of these 'infractions on the family name and honor' are due to situations that Aldon creates. Larger and more athleting he relies on his speed and grace to slip away before any catch him. Kaarik is also pretty sure the lout uses his skills to steals from the family and has placed a few items in places to get Kaarik in trouble due to his studies and research into crafting. "Why would Aldon take that? He is no enchanter"
Aldon

Sigh and you were so looking forward to slipping away quietly. Likely one of Aldon's admirers in the staff that he charms regularly into indecent dalliances slipped him the information. While technically now an adult and having already sought and received the approval of his parents the pair could still cause trouble.
Feb 3, 2024 6:01 pm
Kaarik tries to think quickly, saying the truth would be the most reasonable thing to do, he already had the approval of his parents after all. However, it would hand them an obvious reason to claim that they do not trust his explanation and request that Kaarik appears one more time publicly in front of the family leaders before confirming his departure. It could delay everything, or even worse his parents could change their mind, it had been difficult enough to convince them after all.

The best solution seems to get ride of these two with a lie.

"It looks like all your scheming have worked out cousins. I have been sent away from the community to be reeducated by our cousins from the north. I am to be leaving immediately and without any more noise as our elders made it very clear that I am not to put our name into more shame. They will make up the story for the public tomorrow. "

OOC:
Appropriate roll. The normal success is a 5 or 6, but if you "Focus" then a 4 is also a success. I allow/assume characters to be focusing whenever possible. However as Focusing takes extra time you need to declare Focus and use an action to do this.

The duo seems to take Kaarik's story with Aldon smirking in pleasure at your misfortune but Annarrgeal looks at you with a hint of suspicion. After a few more exchanges you get the two to proceeded you out of the room and make your way from the keep. The two take their leave and you make hasty farewells with your parents before quickly leaving out one of the side entrances and heading towards the Seer's tower as your parents suggestion. You always got on well with the seer and the Wards Master that live there. The trek should only take a day by foot and your frequent visits there to study will make your direction of travel seem unremarkable to the family.

Finally out of sight of the family holdings you breathe a sigh of relief as a tingle of excitement fills your heart. Though you have come this way many times it was always with others. Through the lands between the holdings and the seer's tower are claimed they are not clear of all perils. Adjusting your pack you set out...

You have roughly a 20 mile hike between the holdings and the tower. You are about a mile out and walking through the woods. Explain any travel activities, planned stops for lunch, etc
Feb 4, 2024 5:49 pm
It's with a light heart that Kaarik starts his journey. He decides to keep walking on the main road. He would be faster there and he never heard of anything happening to anyone on that road.
It would also make it easier to organize his days between forest shelters.
He took a few rations with him for the trip but also plans on hunting a little with his bow.

However, he wants to get to the Seer's tower as soon as possible and therefore will only hunt an hour per day maximum.
Feb 5, 2024 2:52 pm
Walking for another hour or so before leaving the track to travel parallel to it as you seeks good prey to hunt, Kaarik has wandered about a quarter hour when he feels an odd sensations. What was that? He looks to the spot only to see the shadow of a tree swaying in the light breeze. A sense of dread starts to creep over you as you keep seeing something(?) out of the corner of your eye but can never focus on it. You get the sense of being stalked. . .
Feb 5, 2024 3:49 pm
Kaaric tries his best to focus on his breathing, it is not the time to panic. There is no reason for this feeling to be anything else than a wild animal at most. It might even be only his imagination.

Walking two dozens steps more he starts planning. He purposely walks as if nothing was happening, notching an arrow as if getting ready to shoot an animal.

Then he stops suddenly, turn around and shoots purposely on a tree trunk several feet away from his position.

As Kaarik whirls and fires he catches a flash of a form and instantly knows what he is facing.
Meenlock
Meenlock as small vicious fey with the ability to project emotions, typically fear, manipulare darkness and shadows, and teleport through it as well. The preferred harassing creatures and picking of the solitary and weak first. Likely there was a small nest nearby but Kaarrik had never known as he had always traveled this route alone. One he could likely handle but if he spent too much time dealing with it more might arrive.

As the thing slipped into the shadows and disappeared, likely stepping out some other shadow in these deep woods, Kaarik felt waves of panic crash against him.
Roll a save test, 2d6, and any success means you can ignore it. If you fail then attacks on the Meenlock are at disadvantage, only 1d6

You scan the area with arrow knocked and ready to fire but see nothing. Cautiously you move away from any deeper shadows knowing it needs larger patches of darkness to teleport around. What you need it s to find an open clearing or to get back to the road. This wooded area is suited better to the meenlock than to you.
Remember that this system requires you to spend 1 action to "load" ranged weapons. So the next time you fire you will need to reload, 1 action, then fire, 2nd/last action.
Feb 6, 2024 3:36 pm
Keeping the arrow knocked, Kaarik hurries in the direction of the road. At least he knows in which direction it is whereas finding a clearing could have been hazardous.
Conscious that he lost all chance of being stealthy at the moment he started running, he tries a desperate "Help!" in case.

at you call you hear a chittering that seems to echo from all around. You see shadows ahead of you deepen and stretch, likely the Meenlock is manipulating them to block your path. . . Then the patter of little feet alerts you ant you jump, turning, to the side to see the twisted fey rushing at you to swipe with it's claws, slashing into your thigh, (1 damage) before dodging back to melt into the darkness of the forrest..
Meenlock actions : attack & move

I understand that each attack phase is two time right, so I could either move or reload my bow. Am I understanding it right?

Also, I could have evaded but it would have meant not being able to move or reload right?
In a reflex coming from the many hunting games he played with his cousins, Kaarik directly shoots an arrow in direction of the Meelock before he looses sight of it.
As he reloads his bow, he starts to be conscious of the pain in thigh and realizes that he might be facing death for the first time in his life.

The arrow narrowly misses the fleeing meenlock as it vanishes back into shadow.
OOC:
correct, 2 actions. Plus you can move slowly, about 10 feet, or do minor actions like open a door or grab something for free

Attack + move. or attack + reload. Or attack + Evade
Evade must be declared before you are struck.
So if you begin evading now it will affect your all attacks that hit you before your next round

More to come later

Fear https you heart as the shadows between you and the road thicken in a sinister way. Unable to bring yourself to enter them Kaarik runs at an angle add fast as he can but knows it is nearly impossible to put run the meenlock, which can do through the shadows easily.

The meenlock continues is taunting and harassing by chittering and causing shadows to grow and shape claws as you near them .

Completely overwhelmed, sweating and in pain, Kaarik prepares to dodge as he feels the shadows creeping on him.

Moving towards the road while attempting to look everywhere at once and avoid shadows Kaarik knows he is a couple minutes out still from the road. Though this drives needles of fear through your thoughts it is clear you need to change thing up. With the road a ways away still perhaps a clearing or any opening where you can prepare to retaliate. Being somewhat familiar with fey you suspect that one or two hits will kill or drive off the thing. However if the hunt continues it increased the likelihood of attracting more and then you will truly be in danger. Suddenly the meenlock pops out of a shadow to swipe at Kaarik again but misses as it chitters tauntingly.
meenlock move, attack
OOC:
No, no one dies on the intro. This is not a tough foe, just tricky to deal with as it can also do ranged attack and teleport. You can back off and fire the bow or just kick at the thing but only roll 1d6 for a kick from disadvantage as you are not trained in unarmed combat.

Disadvantage due to fear was only for the next action after the Save. Moving first then shooting, 2 actions, you get a normal attack. I added a D6 for you
As the bolt strikes the little fey it hisses at him but Kaarik can tell it is severely wounded. Another hit will take it out completely. However before you can reload and fire again the fey slips into the shadows.

Making your way quickly back to the road you press on knowing that fey will likely now hold a grudge against you and may be off collecting comrades to hunt you down. Alternating between a slow jog and a fast walk you reach the Tower ahead of schedule.

Making your way up to the main door you clap loudly to announce your presence, knowing better than to strike the door foolishly as is the human norm. After seconds pass to minutes you wait patiently then the door opens to reveal your cousin.

Skylla
Ah, cosin Kaarik you arrived! she exclaims and smiling pulls you inside and closes the door before giving you a hug in familial greeting. Leaning back she looks you over, noting the gashes in your clothing. And had an adventure on the way? she queries with a raised eye brow. But regardless it is clear you mean to go through with your plan. I will send you on your way in the morning, but tonight you must eat, relax, and tell me all about it
OOC:
Tada! all done and you are still alive. If you want to stick around you can add weapon mastery that will let you attack with 3d6. Or you can add another trait. Quick Shot lets you load and attack with a bow in a single shot. Marksman lets you hit more when you focus. Fleet of Foot lets you move faster. Sneaky to hide. Or you can create one of your own. But no more magic until you become a veteran after another short adventure.

Oh sorry, I thought that the disadvantage lasted until the end of the encounter
Tired, and still a bit moved by his adventure, Kaarik is not unhappy to finally see a familar face and enjoy the warm welcome he is receiving.

Oh my dear cousin Skylla, you would not believe what happened to me. Even these roads, so familiar to us, are not safe for one person alone anymore. I would not have believed that something like this would have happened to me when I was younger.
It only reinforces my convictions however, I am sure that there is a way to bring more peace to this world

As he explained his little adventure to his cousin, he cannot wait to finally spend an evening relaxing.

You would not happen to have a book or two by any chance?

I will go with an additional trait for now and I will take quick shot (I have added it to my character sheet)

Giving you a pointed look she sighs in exasperations. You do recall this is a mage tower and I am said mage, yes? Of course I have a "a book or two". You borrow them often enough, Which ones were you looking for this time?

you both head to the cozy library, easily the 2nd largest room in the tower, the largest being her laboratory, and she points out the relevant sections and recommends specific titles she feels are "at your level".

Let me know your plans for the night. If there is nothing specific you want to know/do then I can move to the morning and set up the next adventure.

In the morning you discuss your plans with your older cousin. She explains that she has a couple of suggestions to help you begin your path to gaining a better understanding and greater power to help create peace for others. She is in contact with the fey and through them has learned of a region that houses a city from before the Shattering. Several of the outside forces are trying to collect powerful artifacts. To what end the fey no not but assure Skylla it is unlikely to be a good thing. A second options is to go to the aid of a distant fey hag who is not in contention with the local populace over her lost daughter.

Skylla has the means to send you to either location and has prepared a talisman that will allow her to summon you back should you desire or need to return. In addition she hands you a pouch with various materials for crafting enchantments "To help you get started"

You eat your breakfast and you spend a relaxing morning preparing for the journey you are about to undertake. Just before noon Skylla joins you and asks if you have decided which of her two options you would like to travel to. She will send you there by her powers but then you will be on your own, save the return talisman.
Feb 12, 2024 11:50 am
Kaarik is intrigued by the idea of discovering new artifacts and, even if he will not even admit him to himself, is still a bit shaken by yesterday encounter.
A populace seems to be a lot to deal with.

Skylla takes you to a room with a large checker pattern of black and white squares in the middle. Performing a ritual that shifts the black and white pattern she frowns, mutters, and tries again. After several other attempts with variations she sighs and smiles.
Turning to you she informs you Well, the initial plan is out as someone has taken control of the Node I planted two send you to. However I may have found an alternative. It seems someone has returned to one of our answers homes near the originally intended destination.
Your can either stay with your cousin or they can send you in to the city. Remember, the return talisman can always return your to my tower.
