Introduction

I cheated and used AI for a starting point.

Dolk Daggerson had always dreamed of seeing the world beyond his small village. He had read every book and map he could find in the local library, but they only made him more curious about the wonders and mysteries that lay beyond the horizon. He knew that venturing out was dangerous and that most people preferred to stay in their familiar lands, but he felt a restless urge to explore and discover new things.

He had saved enough money from his work as a carpenter to buy a sturdy horse and a backpack full of supplies. He had also acquired a compass, a telescope, and a journal to record his observations. He had no fixed destination, only a vague direction: south, where the lands were warmer and more diverse. He hoped to find ancient ruins, exotic cultures, and maybe even a trace of magic.

He bid farewell to his family and friends, who wished him luck and warned him to be careful. He mounted his horse and rode out of the village, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. He did not know what he would encounter on his journey, or if he would ever return, but he was ready to face the unknown.

Disclaimer

For this game I am using the Ironsworn setting, but the Starforged moves (because I find them more interesting and balanced). I will be tweaking things here and there to make them fit/work. So if you find inconsistencies, that's probably why.

I'm going to try to focus on exploration this game and avoid combat whenever possible.

Any advice is welcome and feel free to let me know what you think! :)

Dolk was unable to see the village walls anymore from where he was now. Maybe later when he got up one of the hills he could just about make out his Stoneshore in the distance, but it would be too small to really see anything. He was feeling good, great even! This had been something he had been looking forward to. Venturing out and seeing what was out there.

He wasn't alone on the road. This trade route was commonly used and every so often he would pass people going the other direction or someone on foot, and thus slower. Dolk greeted them all with a big smile. The weather was good too. The season was starting to head into autumn but it was still quite pleasant outside. At least when the sun was up. For the cold of night, he was also prepared. Everything mounted on and to his horse, Flash.

"Well, pall." He said to Flash "Looks like it'll be me and you for a while. Hope you're as excited as I am!"

In one of his saddlebags, Dolk carried a message from the village council to the council of Shellsbrook. He wasn't told what it said, and he didn't really care much either. But since he was going south anyway, the council had tasked him with delivering this message. Probably some kind of trade deal. That was his first stop. Shellsbrook. Luckily, he had a map to tell him where to go, but it required a few stops along the way.

I think some sort of noble burial is going on and they are not allowing anyone to pass until it's done.
After quite a few hours of traveling, Dolk can see the forest he's supposed to get to in the distance. But what's that up ahead? In the middle of the road, 2 men in armor stand blocking the way. Dolk slows down Flash to talk to the men.

"Halt!" One calls out as he gets close. In a friendly way, Dolk responds "Good afternoon. Might I ask what's going on?"
"Sir Cam Rodel is being buried up ahead. The road is blocked for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Unless you have an invitation, I can't let you though, sir." The smaller of the 2 guards answers.

"You've gotta be kidding me. I need to pass here to get to Lush Forest. How am I supposed to do that then?" Dolk asks. The guard looks at him unsympathetically. "Well, you can go back to the previous split and take the road southeast, or wait until tomorrow."

Looking at the 2 armored and armed men, Dolk doesn't feel like causing too much of a problem out of it. Else he might end up on the pointy end of that sword. Grumbling under his breath, he turns Flash around and heads back toward the last fork in the road. "Unbelievable! It had to be today of all days... You know what?" He says pretty much to himself. "I bet we could sneak past by going through that cornfield over there." A smile appears on his face again, thinking about it. "I just need a minute to prepare."

With a new plan of action, he dismounts out of sight of the guards and makes a few preparations. Dolk has always been the best in the city at playing hide and seek. Even when people looked straight at him often they couldn't see him. He had a sort of affinity with the shadows, even though he never thought much of it. It was just a skill like any other, he assumed. His hand reaches down and touches some mud, which he uses to make a few stripes on his cheeks and forehead. He does the same to Flash, hoping that'll work the same way. Then he closes his eyes and imagines himself in a different location. A deserted place where he is able to go where he pleases without being seen by anyone.

Everything seems to be going well until a field mouse shoots past them, obviously scared by the intruders in its habitat. Flash is spooked by the sudden movement near its feet and decides to kick hard as it feels in danger. A scared whinny escapes Flash's lips.

Dolk holds the reigns tightly and tries his best to soothe the animal, whispering that everything is alright. Over in the distance, he can hear one of the guards speak up "Hey what was that over there? Did you just hear a horse too?" If he can't get Flash to calm down right now, they'll surely notice.

"Hey, it's that guy who needed to go to Lush Forest. He's trying to get past us! Get your crossbow, Jack!"

Dolk has just about enough time to heave himself up onto Flash and turn to set off running when a crossbow bolt misses him by a hair and almost makes him soil his pants. Another will surely follow fast behind. He needs to get out of here FAST!
With Flash only half under control, he puts his heels into the horse to get it to move. Hopefully in the right direction.

Action & Theme: Defeat Dream

Looks like Dolk's dream might be cut short already...
A sharp pain shoots through Dolk's waist. He looks down as he struggles to take control of Flash and spots a tear in his shirt, red liquid is starting to ooze out of it. All he can think about is how tragic it would be if he falters here. Not even a full day from home, his first hurdle. And he's already too unprepared to deal with it. Was this a fool's dream? Should he have stayed home, safely? He surely didn't think it would come to this! Flash staggers, throwing his rider off onto the ground and everything goes black for Dolk.

A splitting headache is what wakes him up. By the looks of it, it's dark outside. To his surprise, this implies that he is inside. He rubs the pain away from his eyes and tries to sit up. Something tugs at his wrist. "Careful there, sonny." A voice calls out from across the room. Looking at his wrist, Dirk sees a chain fastened to an iron bar embedded in the wall. Such a bar is usually used to tie horses to. But I suppose it works for humans just as well. "My head." Dolk says softly, rubbing his hair. A painful bruise makes on the back of his head him wince. "Yeah, you hit your head pretty hard." The voice, now closer, tells him. In the dim torch light, Dolk can see his face now. It's the second guard. The one who hadn't talked. An older man with white hair and a thick mustache. Probably the one who had the crossbow. Dolk tenses. "Let me go!"

"Oh, I don't know about that yet." The man says. "You see, we caught you trying to sneak past. We would have been well within our right to outright kill you, sonny." Dolk's expression changes to disbelief. "Why didn't you then?" He asks. "Well.." Says the guard. "I still can. But it will depend on you. You see, though I might not look like it, I'm the captain of these guards. And unfortunately, I lost a good man the other day on my way here. So... To finish the task I've been given, I need a replacement. And then you came strolling by, already owning a horse, well equipped for travel." He smirks. "Now, I'll leave the choice up to you, sonny. Either you swear your allegiance to me and join us on our way to Fellmire, or I leave you here. You'll surely find a way to escape, but by then your horse and belongings will be long gone."

Dolk thinks for a hard minute before answering. He could get out of here alive and free, but he would lose everything he's worked for the past months. Or he could join this troupe. Come to think of it... Fellmire rang a bell. Wasn't that one of the stops on his way to Shellsbrook? That wouldn't be all that bad. But who's to say he'll be let go once they get there? "So if I agree to this, and we get to Fellmire, I'll be free to go?" He inquires. The captain shows him a grin with fewer teeth than most people Dolk knows. "If you do your job well enough. So, does that mean I have your word? Swear it on that amulet, boy." He says as he points to a piece of iron hanging from Dolk's neck. It was an amulet given to him by his mother a week ago. She was adamant that it would protect him in rough times. So much for that promise... It had failed him on the first sight of danger. Nevertheless, Dolk nodded and grabbed the amulet in his hand.

"I swear to join your ranks and serve to the best of my ability until we get to Fellmire and have repaid my debt."

"The name's Brakka." The old guard says. "If you manage to get out of those shackles by morning, we'll take you with us." He can't help but let out a short laugh as he turns and heads out of the stables.

"Well this is JUST GREAT!" Dolk says angrily, looking at the chain around his hand and then scanning the area for anything useful to help him escape with.

To be continued when the RNG gets better

OOC:
New day, new RNG? Let's find out.
Dolk looks at the chain in the torchlight. Trying to figure out a weak spot. It doesn't look like the sturdiest piece of equipment. Perhaps they planned it that way. Gave him a fighting chance. There were a few rocks near him on the ground and an old bucket. Other than that it was mostly dust and hay. He looked down and spotted the amulet again. It wasn't round, it was in the shape of a spearhead with a marking on it that resembled a bird. He never knew what it meant. Most likely it was just an old piece of metal that someone thought looked pretty. It had bits of black iron in it though, giving it an interesting texture.

Dolk set the pointy end against the weakest looking link, there was already a hairline crack in it, and propped it up against the metal bar. With his now free hand, he grabbed the bucket and held it high to give the amulet a good whack with it.
OOC:
I'm gonna rule this as a wits roll. Dolk is not a man of strength, but he tried his best to do it in a smart way.

To his astonishment, the plan worked! With a loud crack, the link breaks and loosens the grip of it around his wrist. It takes some effort, but he gets free. Now what? He asks himself. He could run off and escape, however he would break his vow and have to leave Flash behind. With this in mind, he decides it's better to just wait out the night and try to get some sleep at least. He looks for a good spot among the hay and drifts off to sleep after a tiring day.
Feb 20, 2024 9:57 pm
A loud bang wakes him up in the morning. He's still to drowsy to realize what it was, but daylight is once again filling the building through one of the windows. Dolk gets up, rubbing the sleep and hay from his eyes, and walks outside to what he expects to be a band of guardsmen. Once outside he recognizes the 2 that he had talked to on the road. Sheepishly he walks up to the group and gives them a careful "Mornin'."

"Well if it ain't mister sneaky himself!" One the two guards chuckles. "Off to hide in the corn again?" The man is laughing, but a tone of annoyance can be perceived in the message.

"Yeah.. yeah... get it all out of your system." Dolk replies "Apparently you're stuck with me for a while anyway."

"So it seems!" The voice of the captain suddenly booms from behind him. "I see you're out of those shackles. Very well. Get your horse ready and let's get moving!"

Without much talk or protest, Dolk does as instructed and takes the time to study the situation rather than start making trouble. He takes a couples of hours on the road to really try and understand the group dynamic. Maybe he can figure out a way to use that to his advantage some time.

So... It's been a long while but I'm giving this another shot. I'll probably be on a low posting rate as my time is more limited these days.
I've upgraded all of Dolk's stats to the 'challenging' set instead of 'perilous'. So everything is +1.

Action & Theme: Advance Direction -> Paying attention to the people made Dolk forget to pay attention to the path they are taking.
Secure an advantage -> miss -> a low hanging branch is in the way of Dolk's path as he's looking at one of the others.
While on the road, Dolk is checking out the behavior of the other guards. He notices two of them talking to each other and tries to steer Flash closer to hear what's going on. However, since he's so focused on the guards, he doesn't notice a branch sticking out from one of the trees next to the road and when he finally notices it, he's got less than a second to react. "Crap!" He exclaims and quickly tries to dodge the tree before it hits him straight in the face. He tugs on the reins of Flash to make him bend through his knees at the same time.

Rolls

Dodge the branch (Face danger +edge +1 from Swift companion) - (2d6+3, 2d10)

I used 2d6 on my roll by accident, but even if I ignore 1 of the dice it's still a strong hit. Luckily.
Face danger -> Strong hit! -> +1 momentum = +3
Hearing the 'yelp' the other guards look back and see how Dolk expertly controls Flash to make sure he misses the branch by about a hair's width. "This kid's got moves." one of the older ones says after the laughing has died down. "That horse seems to trust you well." It seems his unplanned stunt has earned him some respect from the group of guards.
OOC:
Since I'm being lead, I don't need to roll for the journey.
After riding for a couple of hours, the group stops to set up camp for the night. They order Dolk to go and collect firewood before it gets dark. Not wanting to make anyone angry, he complies and goes off to pick wood.

Action & Theme -> Swear Enemy -> I'm thinking it's some place where people have sworn to hold off an enemy. Maybe a beast or horror?
The place where they are setting up camp appears to be a popular camping location close to a few stone buildings. Dolk walks up to one of the guards he doesn't really know yet. He'd heard someone call him Jack. "What's that building?" He asks, pointing to the place where the captain is talking to someone who appears to work or live here. "An outpost." He simply answers. Which begs the question "What for? I didn't see much on the way here except cattle."

Jack answers with a smirk "Heh, that's exactly why. They're trying to make sure the cattle is safe. If you're not careful over here, your cattle will be half eaten by morning." This snaps Dolk to attention. "You mean, a beast hunts here?" "They would if nobody was keeping an eye out. How's that wood coming along?" Jack says, making it clear to Dolk that he's not looking for a chat. Taking the hint, Dolk gets back to the task at hand. No wonder they told him to find the wood before dark. I bet going out into the woods in the dark could spell death. He did wonder what kind of creature lived here, though.

Aspect & Focus -> Sealed Function
As Dolk walks around in the woods, he notices some interesting things. On the side of a mound, a large boulder can be seen. An odd thing in the middle of a forest. He decides to forget about the wood for now and investigate. After all, he's bound to be an explorer!

Getting closer to the rock, he can see how big it really is. It's about 2 heads bigger than he is and as wide as 4 men. It appears to be clocking a tunnel entrance. Dolk puts his hand in front of the place where the rock touches the mound. Sure enough a breeze of cold air hits his hand, giving him goose bumps. "Could this be the monster's lair? Or part of it at least." He whispers to himself. Then he hears a sharp whistle coming from behind him. "Crap, I need to get back. It'll be dark soon." He looks at the pile of wood that he had managed to gather. Definitely not enough to support a group like theirs through the night. He curses at himself and picks up what he's found so far.

If he takes a bit of time to pick up more wood along the way, it might be fine, but that might keep him from being back before dark. Should he risk it or take the likely scolding?

Dolk makes sure he's got enough wood before he returns. He didn't want the group to be cold and blame him for it. He still had to travel with them for at least a day. By the time he reaches the right amount, another 2 whistles have gone by. Each sounding more urgent than the last. Stressed out and wanting to get back quickly, he hurries back to camp where some of the men were getting ready to go search for him. "Took you long enough!" They say in a bad mood when he shows up. But they quickly feel better when the fire can be fueled and everyone manages to keep warm.

"Jack, you take first watch." Brakka tells the group before assigning each with a watch order. Even Dirk gets his turn assigned. He nods, not wanting to argue, and gets ready to have some sleep before it's his turn. He brushes Flash quickly and makes sure he's well secured and not too close to that forest with the boulder. Taking care of Flash helped him relax and get his mind off things. It was therapeutic in a way. "Good night boy." He says, leaving it to rest too.

Rolls

Take care of Flash (Hearten +heart) - (1d6+3, 2d10)
