Nexus Laboratories"Nexus Laboratories" is a clandestine research facility shrouded in secrecy, hidden away from prying eyes in a remote and desolate location. Deep within the heart of a dense forest, this facility operates under the radar, its existence known only to a select few.

Operated by a shadowy organization funded by an unknown source. Nexus is a hub of cutting-edge scientific exploration, pushing the boundaries of human understanding and ethical constraints. Its primary focus lies in genetic research, particularly in the manipulation and augmentation of DNA.

Within its fortified walls, scientists toil away in state-of-the-art laboratories, conducting experiments that blur the line between innovation and ethical boundaries. The air hums with the sound of advanced machinery and the crackle of electricity as researchers delve into the secrets of the genetic code.

Security measures are stringent, with armed guards patrolling the perimeter and biometric scanners safeguarding access to sensitive areas. The facility's true purpose is known only to those who work within its walls, sworn to secrecy under threat of severe consequences.

Rumors abound regarding the nature of the experiments conducted within Nexus Laboratories. Some whisper of attempts to create superhuman soldiers or genetically engineered organisms for clandestine purposes. Others speak of ethically dubious research aimed at extending human lifespan or enhancing cognitive abilities.

Despite its clandestine nature, Nexus remains a beacon of scientific progress and ambition, attracting brilliant minds from around the world with promises of unlimited resources and unparalleled opportunities for discovery. Yet, beneath its veneer of innovation lies a dark underbelly of secrecy and moral ambiguity, where the pursuit of knowledge knows no bounds.

Early YearsYou were born in the Nexus, a secret laboratory. The scientists there initially claimed that you were born naturally, with a couple of them acting as your parents. Raised entirely within the underground facility, you were kept in the dark about the outside world. Your parents often cited safety reasons for keeping certain areas off-limits. Despite the absence of visible guards, the facility was heavily secured with steel doors, cameras, and mirrors, making you suspect constant surveillance. Your interactions were limited to your parents, scientists, nurses, and occasionally heavily armed military personnel in unmarked green uniforms.

You had access to everything you needed in the Nexus, but life was difficult due to regular, painful experiments and injections that seemed to be harming you. Any form of resistance was met with punishment. Some children rebelled, but those who didn't cooperate would vanish overnight, never to return. As far as you knew, nobody had ever escaped from that place.

Escape and The ProfessorWhen you reached an age where you could understand, a mysterious figure known as The Professor began to contact you, slowly revealing the truth. His true name was never disclosed; he was simply a scientist at the time. The Professor informed you that the laboratory was located in Russia and did his best to describe the outside world, including the languages spoken there—Russian and English, among others.

As time passed, The Professor divulged that your birth was not natural. You were created from a cluster of human cells in a lab, which developed into a fetus before being implanted into a woman's uterus through artificial means. Your surrogate mothers departed from the facility after your birth, never to be seen again. While the exact science and secrets behind this procedure remained obscure, The Professor described you as a marvel of genetic engineering. Within the Nexus, these artificially created beings were referred to as "augments" by the scientists.

Gradually, The Professor gained your trust and orchestrated your escape. Through discreet conversations and carefully placed clues, he guided you towards freedom. Doors inexplicably left unattended, cameras conveniently malfunctioning to allow you to explore at night, and guards being diverted away when you were in danger of being caught—all of these elements contributed to your eventual escape.

One day, chaos erupted in the facility, culminating in a massive explosion. Seizing the opportunity, you and several other experimental subjects managed to flee during the confusion. Amid the escape, you witnessed the horror of mutants and other nightmarish creatures breaking free, attacking guards and fellow escapees alike.

Although you do not recall the exact location of the lab, you distinctly remember the biting cold and a fierce snowstorm during your escape. With the assistance of a commando, you fled on snowmobiles, watching as the secret laboratory disappeared into the distance while bullets whizzed past. Many children did not survive the ordeal, but you were among the fortunate few who did. The remainder of your journey was a blur of hiding in various towns until you finally reached a clandestine airstrip, from which you escaped Russia safely.

A month later, you were welcomed into the caring embrace of Serenity Sanctuary, an orphanage located in the heart of New York City.

Life at Serenity SanctuaryThe orphanage served as a front, meticulously organized by The Professor to shelter special children from Nexus, the American government, and other foreign powers aware of their existence. Situated in a bustling city, the orphanage aimed to blend in seamlessly and remain inconspicuous. The constant fear of being captured and subjected to inhumane experiments kept most of the children obedient and cautious.

The teachers and staff were well aware of the children's unique abilities and supported them in their journey of self-discovery. The facility's basement was equipped with suitable installations for training and managing children whose powers posed a threat to the orphanage's safety. Despite attending a regular high school nearby, you and the other children concealed your abilities from society.

While incidents of children accidentally revealing their powers occurred, the orphanage staff and The Professor were adept at erasing any evidence. However, there was one instance where a child was apprehended by authorities and never seen again. Remarkably, law enforcement and military personnel were never seen at the orphanage's doorstep, suggesting that The Professor and his allies skillfully managed such situations to protect the secret.

Over the years, more children who had escaped from Nexus, like you, were discovered by The Professor and brought to the orphanage. It was believed that all the supernaturally gifted children at the orphanage were created at Nexus, as The Professor stated that Nexus was the only known facility with the capability to engineer augments. However, he cautioned that other labs were likely researching similar sciences, hinting at future discoveries.

Despite the semblance of normalcy, The Professor conducted regular examinations, including tissue and blood samples, although these were deemed minor compared to the horrors experienced at Nexus. Years after your arrival, The Professor vanished without a trace or explanation, leaving a void in the lives of the children and staff at Serenity Sanctuary.

Adult lifeOn your 18th birthday, the orphanage staff, with a mixture of pride and apprehension, began to prepare you for life beyond the sanctuary of Serenity. They guided you through the practicalities of integrating into society and living independently, offering advice on finding a job, securing accommodation, and managing finances.

While some of you were encouraged to consider living together in shared apartments, forming a close-knit support network, the choice was ultimately left to each individual. The teachers emphasized the importance of mutual support and camaraderie, knowing that facing the challenges of the outside world alone could be daunting.

Despite the newfound freedom and independence, there was one crucial request from the orphanage staff: to safeguard the secrets of the orphanage. This was not only to protect the identities and safety of the remaining children but also to ensure that the sanctuary of Serenity would always be available to those who needed it in the future.

As you stepped out into the world, a mix of excitement and trepidation filled your heart. You were grateful for the care and guidance you had received at the orphanage but also keenly aware of the challenges that lay ahead. Nevertheless, you were determined to carve out a path for yourself, knowing that the bonds forged within the walls of Serenity would forever be a part of you.

Game synopsis

You are born in Nexus Laboratories as a supernatural human. With little knowledge of the outside world you spent all your early years as a lab rat surrounded by scientists and brilliant minds. At the dawn of becoming a teenager, you managed to escape with the help of a mysterious benefactor only known as the Professor.

With the Professor's resources, you have immigrated clandestinely to New York City for your own protection. You took advantage of the dense population and diversity to hide, growing up in a home for homeless kids financed and organized by the Professor's allies. Most of the children there had superpowers, and discretion was key to survive. Today, you are a young adult living on your own or together. You integrated the system as normal citizens, some of you students, others having mundane jobs. You didn't hear from the Professor for many years until he reached out to meet in a secret place to enlist your help for making the world a better place by going after scientists responsible for the creation of Nexus.

This is a contemporary story of a group of special individuals who are interested in learning about their origin, staying hidden from their creators and government. They will be helping their Professor to make the world a better place or/and whatever they decide to do with their powers.

The heroes will have to deal with the drama of the day to day, while in parallel being superheroes that deal with supernatural bad guys and some serious issues that threaten the world.


Timeline

You escaped Nexus around 2010. The game will begin around 2025. You are at least 18 years old now, up to 30. Meaning that you were born in 1995 (30 years old in 2025) or after.
