2. Digging in Sand

Feb 23, 2024 3:11 am
Arrakis, Carthag, House Heslin
Having returned from the Sihaya Ridge and the smuggler's den you found there, you return to the city of Carthag, and Kendon Ordway drops you off near the manor. You make your way along, and are soon inside. The relief from the desert heat is immediate. If anything, the city streets are more oppressive than the open wilderness. It's as if the buildings, colored light to reflect the heat, instead contain it, condense it. But Sina is modestly wealthy, and it is her way to pamper her household.

Modestly wealthy. As one of the premiere water science experts on Arrakis, House Heslin has more than it's share of solari and water.

The local cut marble, harvested from the north pole, shines with pride, and seems to cool the air in a way that feels like home. A massive fountain shoots an untellable wealth into the air, you skin sighing in relief with the humidity.

Standing before the fountain, you find Sina, taking measurements and recording those on a recording device.

OOC:
I'm assuming the members of the party have all shared the insights they got from the meeting with each other - Marya, at least, will have been open about what she learned, and the plans she has for The Owl.
Marya walks up to Sina,

"Lady Sina, our meeting went well with the smugglers."

"We learned that Ordway, the contact we were directed towards, is responsible for most of the smugglers' ability to transport goods here in Arrakis, and also off-world. This group of smugglers is a small operation, but competent. We all feel that we can rely on their trust and loyalty if we work with them - trust and loyalty are the basis of their entire operation. They will be there to back us up, as long as we are true to our agreements with them."

"We agreed to work out the details of prices and payment later on, once the operation is in action."

"We revealed to them that we are working on behalf of you, of House Helsin

"We let them know that our interest in talking to them is for, firstly, their help building a new Grand Market here in Carthag. That we would look for their help sourcing and acquiring the kinds of non-illicit goods required to make the market a success. They currently traffic mostly in high-value smaller items - spice, but also art works, weapons, and high-tech machines."

"Secondly, that we have the skills to highly refine melange and that we're looking for their help moving this melange off-world to customers. They told us that they have previously trafficked raw melange, working with raw spice. It was a lot to move, as it is mostly sand, and that made it difficult to work with. They would be very interested to work with more refined melange, however."

"We agreed that we would work as independent partners, with each of us keeping control of their own methods and processes."

"I was able to capture the attention of their leader, The Owl. He is now desperate to spend time alone with me. He is a charismatic man, is smitten with me, and is very eager to please me. He may be an invaluable contact for the work we are planning here. In an effort to impress me, he indicated he would convince the others in his organisation to offer us an initially reduced price while we establish the trust and processes required."

"We left the meeting agreeing to stay in touch via Ordway. The Owl indicated he will be in the city more often than he has previously, so we could meet here."
Feb 25, 2024 12:34 pm
"As next steps I suggest we compile a list of goods we would be interested in sourcing from them for the market here in Carthag, progress other plans towards setting up the market. That we also prepare a sample of the refined spice to share with them, so they have a sense of quite how fine our product is - and hence how promising their prospects are when they do indeed work with us."

"Does that fit well with your plans, Lady Sina? If they do, then perhaps our team can start the processes of intrigue and heavy-handedness that we would need to protect and conceal our plans?"

Rook's primary contraband had been flechette pistols. Unfortunately, those would not be legitimate market items. Still, it was a lucrative operation and he hoped to have it grow. He didn't see any reason why he couldn't move weapons for both the market and his own operation. He'd tend to Lady Sina's and this group's goals as well as his own.

He listens carefully and watches Sina's face. He expects her to be pleased with their progress. Everything appears to be coming together nicely although it was very early days yet. Marya had her developing relationship with Ordway to cultivate and maintain and they had a list to make.

"Art always provides a vast area of legitimate works to display," he suggests.
Feb 26, 2024 5:48 am
Hural remains stoic and observant during Marya's relay of their meeting with The Owl. Specific, detailed - Sina would know exactly what they had accomplished. He watches for signs of dissatisfaction on her face.

"Art is good, yes. Any luxury products - water, of course, coffee, clothing, perfumes, cosmetics - to name some more."
Feb 26, 2024 6:26 pm
"This is excellent work, all of you. I'll trust you to handle the details, in order to keep that side of the business open. The market will be entirely legitimate trade, on the surface, where people might acquire domestic goods, sundries, exotic foods, furniture, arts and crafts, all the way up to vehicles and luxury goods. Below the surface, if it is known that certain things might be acquired within the maze of stalls, then so much the better. Mystique and opulence, hand in hand "

She runs her fingers through the water of the fountain. "There are those who will oppose us. I've heard word that the criminal element, or one of their many faces, wishes to discuss security concerns for my proposed market. In addition, the builders guild has purchased several buildings in the most opportune site, likely going to cash in on the venture. I've purchased most of what I need, but not all, and the word has gotten out somehow. Tomorrow, I'd like you to meet with the protection racket and convince them that opposing us will be to their detriment. Then we'll need to meet with the builders to make sure their investment doesn't interfere with mine. "
Feb 26, 2024 7:46 pm
"Forgive my thinking, Lady Sina. Would it be possible these criminals might be of some use to us? As you say, there are many faces of criminality within Carthag. It is unlikely we can rid us of them all. Perhaps instead we identify the strongest among them and ensure our support in exchange for specific limits on their collections, we might exert some control over things?"

Rook nods enthusiastically.

"Yes and Shadran Korr might be able to suggest the more reliable of those criminal elements. It's worth mentioning too that we can profit handsomely from Artwork. Only the wealthy can afford reputable works and this affords a sizeable markup, whereas necessities don't have the same profit margins."
Feb 26, 2024 10:14 pm
When the discussion turns to threats to Lady Heslin's operation, it has Marcus's full attention.
Feb 26, 2024 10:31 pm
She nods at Hural, as if acknowledging that he's caught on at once (not that she expected otherwise). "I'm certain that they have useful skills, if they could be bent to trustworthiness. I do have a reputation to maintain, but Arrakis is what it is. I'll say this as unguarded as I can, since it is just us -- results are all that matters, and if we have to work with a gang of cutthroats and thieves, then so be it. Best we know that in advance, of course, and take precautions. I'm sure Rook can coach you on what those precautions look like."
Feb 27, 2024 12:19 am
"Yes, Lady Sina. You can be assured that I will offer all my advice on dealing with the criminal elements."
Feb 27, 2024 1:37 am
Hural nods curtly, "Cutthroats and thieves, so long as they are our cutthroats and thieves - agreed." He pauses, then adds, "And we'll deal with the builder's guild. Should we have the option to negotiate a purchase of those properties they have taken ahold of, I assume a reasonable budget would be allowed? I believe that would be my first approach, if in agreement Lady Sina."
Feb 27, 2024 8:06 am
Marya listens to the others, feeling no need to add to the conversation at this moment. The plans that are developing sound like good next steps to her.
Mar 2, 2024 3:01 am
You settle on a budget, but you know that the funds she has for this project will not last indefinitely, and so achieving some kind of savings would allow more freedom later.

With the prospect of your first visit to the proposed site of the new grand market, which Sina privately refers to as her Souq, you set a time to go together.

Marcus and Rook both know that the area will be rougher than the merchant district, as it lays between a good zone and stricken poverty. As the market develops, the surrounding area will increase in wealth making the the market itself ever more secure, but at the moment, it's going to be more dangerous.

When you arrive by a discrete, less flamboyant kind of limocar, you find the shops in question to be in good shape, but around them is a maze of small rough buildings. While the buildings you need to secure are in surpassingly good shape, the buildings in the surrounding part of the city were once sturdy enough to withstand sandstorms but are showing signs of imminent collapse. Shady, hooded figures gather in the shade, countless eyes upon you from a myriad books and crannies in the warren.

"We're looking for the Builders' Guild," Rook says as he approaches the less threatening of the shadows, his hand obviously sliding toward his knife. Rook knows that he has a reputation among many of these criminal elements and their patsies. He therefore hopes that one or more of them will recognize him as a person not to be trifled with.

"Your bosses too. How might we find one or more of them?"

Marcus watches people come and go, keeping an eye out for trouble.
Mar 4, 2024 7:10 am
Hural inspects the crowd, attempting to more clearly discern the groups of seedy characters. He hopes to determine which of the seedy groups appears the most confident and professional - they would be the ones he would approach to make a deal.
Mar 4, 2024 10:41 am
Before coming out here, Marya has checked in with her informant network - asking around about the elements of the underworld that are typically involved in protection rackets. She was interested in the names, and any useful information about how they work, possible weaknesses they might have.

She uses the knowledge she got from checking in with her contacts, to heighten her awareness and attention as she keeps her eyes open for danger, but also opportunities to contact the right group of criminals here.
Mar 6, 2024 4:14 am
When he gets closer, Rook notices right away that the person he's approached is wearing gang signs. "Fifty Solaris, and I'll tell you where they are and where you can shove it."

A person behind him snickers, and you can see them both sprout maula pistols. He's a sneaking suspicion that they were waiting for him.

Marcus' sharp eyes see this too, not more importantly, the noose tightens as several others move in. Quietly, getting an angle, getting ready, but not trying to attract attention.

Hural comes to a similar conclusion. The area has been cleared, and those that are here, are waiting in ambush.

Marya had learned that the market area is being patrolled by a gang calling themselves Shabshub Masmum, or Poison Slipper. Highwaymen and muggers, they're strangely discrete, often unseen before they strike. She suspects immediately that these are not the thugs she was expecting.
Mar 6, 2024 6:41 am
Hural's hand goes to his own pistol. "It appears we have a fight before us," he says quietly to his companions. He scans the immediate area for the nearest and best cover.
Mar 6, 2024 11:24 am
Marya senses how deadly this situation has suddenly become, dives for cover, draws her maula pistol, trains it on the person who spoke to them, and shouts out at them:

"Back the fuck down, asshole! You have no idea who you are messing with here!"

She doesn't use The Voice - she hasn't had time to work him out - but her voice is challenging and authoritative. She hopes, at the least, that she's able to cause a distraction to help the others to do what they do best.

Marya, care to make an intimidation style roll?

Momentum: 3
Threat: 4
Mar 6, 2024 5:19 pm
Too late Rook notices the gang signs. They were the groups he avoided doing business with and therefore he had no connections to use in their favor.

"They must have known we were coming," he says, drawing his maula pistol while attempting to dive for cover.
Mar 6, 2024 6:42 pm
Marcus activates his shield and draws his sword. He looks for cover and a path to close the distance between him and one of the gang members so he can strike.

OOC:
Putting together this roll...

FOCUS
Maybe Focus: Neurolinguistics - "planting an idea in someone without their knowledge" (getting them to back down)? But I'm not trying to do this without their knowledge, I'm trying to intimidate them, which is obvious. So no Focus applies.

SKILL
Discipline "ability to exert direct, overt influence over others through presence, force of will, and the power of authority." (6)

DRIVES
Power 8 "Understanding others is the path to true power." - Power seems the right fit, but this statement isn't a good fit to the action.

So maybe Faith 4 is the best fit (as "Does the action rely upon trusting in others, an organization, or a higher power? Often useful when relying on empathy and wisdom." (p147) and this relies on trusting the actions of the rest of the team).

TRAITS
None of my traits are relevant here.

So I'm just rolling Discipline 6 Faith 4 and I'll buy one extra d20 with a point of momentum.

EDIT: I make that 3 successes?

OOC:
Works for me. With three successes, three of them will rethink their lives.
Marya's command and presence cows three of the encircling thugs. They back off, holding back as they suddenly realize they were sent to deal with a threat far greater than their pay grade. This isn't helped by the flicker of the shield generator around the sword wielder Marcus, which also escalates the threat they face. They'll hold back and see how the fray goes before committing one way or another.

Alright, you've got an ambush to deal with. Why are they attacking? Who sent them and what does that person want? These are among the many questions hovering at the edge of violence.

They're closing slowly, likely hoping you'll break and run and they can shoot you in the back. This means that if you act aggressively, you go first.

First to post is first to act. After that, initiative flits back and forth between the two sides. (Except you can spend 2 Momentum to act when it is the foes turn.)

He leads you to one of the buildings, and you notice as you get close to the front door, that there are two guards in the shade. Bafta leads you past them, giving them some sign. Within it appears mostly empty in a way that gives the impression of a decorative choice, but there is traffic in the sand that blows in leading to the back. To another guard, subtly hidden, he says, "Tell Meacan that I've brought potential business interests." The guard disappears through a door.

To you, Bafta explains, "Meacan is the man in charge here. He's the liaison to the Builders' Guild, an area chieftain if you will, for construction in this area."

The man comes out, and with him two armed guards, who look twitchy. When he sees you, he's suddenly unsure that he's protected enough. To the guards, he says, "Leave us." They back away into the inner room, ready to charge if called.

Meacan is a sturdy man, barrel chested in a way of a big strong man turning slowly to fat. He's dressed in working clothes, and has some stone dust on his thighs. "I'm Meacan, of the Builders' Guild. I was not expecting to be entertaining today. What brings you here? Perhaps you seek our highly specialized engineering skills to expand your compound, or you wish to construct a new installation? You'll find no finer expertise on Arakis, and we can handle any job of any size." He's going into full salesman mode.
Mar 18, 2024 3:30 pm
Rook's observant eyes constantly scan for threats as the situation continues to develop. He is surprised by the level of security and especially so at their ability to remain hidden as if the guards are coming out of the walls themselves. While this is unnerving, it speaks to the organization and talent of the Builders' Guild.

He will leave the negotiating to the others while he remains aware of their safety.
Mar 18, 2024 5:39 pm
Having moved on, Marcus sheathed his sword. Now in the presence of Meacan, he keeps watch while the others negotiate.
Mar 19, 2024 7:29 pm
Marya's wearing her typical operational gear of full-body stillsuit-like-but-without-the-stink urban black tactical suit. And yet, despite the outfits ruggedness and practicality, Marya's powerful smile, compelling looks, and attitude leave her looking pretty fabulous in it.

She stands there at Hural's side, leaving space for the mentat to take the lead here. At the same time, she gives both Bata and Meacan a good looking over, awarding them both with a good share of her smile.

"As a bene gesserit sister, I'd be loosing my touch if I couldn't distract these two, give some kind of advantage to Hural as he works on them..." she thinks to herself.
OOC:
My guess is that Hural is the best PC to take the lead in negotiating here - but I don't want to load you down always, @C1NDER, with leading these things if you'd rather not. Marya could also take the lead here - just let me know if you'd prefer that.

Charming Trait (reduce difficulty by 1), Duty (7 - "Duty brings me peace and acceptance" she is comfortable doing this kind of thing in the name of her duty to her House), Communicate (6).

Attempt is to distract their two 'opponents', while also making them more likely to be inclined to be generous and forthcoming with their party, based on their admiration of Marya, and being somewhat flustered by her presence and looks.

Mechanically I also would be happy to pick up a bit of extra Momentum for this scene.

EDIT: I think that;s two successes from the critical hit i.e. the 1, with a -1 to difficulty because of the use of the trait.

Rolls

Charming Trait, Duty 7, Communicate 6 - (2d20)

(115) = 16

Mar 19, 2024 10:32 pm
OOC:
Difficulty 2 to distract them, D1 with Charming, so that generates an extra momentum.

Let's create a new Aspect to the scene: Distracted - difficulties in interactions with Bafta and Meacan are reduced by 1 while Marya is present.
Momentum: 5
Threat: 4
Mar 20, 2024 2:56 am
"Meacan, thank you for receiving us. We of course recognize the importance and the strength of the Builder's Guild here on Arrakis. We come with potential investment opportunity that we trust you will be interested in. You own several properties in this area of the city that our benefactor has interest in. We are here to politely offer negotiations for their purchase, if no other option presents itself."
Mar 20, 2024 4:01 pm
Rook wonders about the extent of the security here with so many guards. It feels like a lot. What is so valuable in this building to warrant such protection? He keeps his eyes on both doorways and the guards as well while the negotiations commence.
Mar 21, 2024 2:39 am
Meacan crosses his arms. "Ah, yes, I know your benefactor by reputation, I think. We have no interest in selling this building, or the other one. We have become quite fond of it, but more than that, it has become central to our dealings. You could make an offer of course. Enough Solaris and we'd move out today."
Mar 21, 2024 3:22 am
"I see," Hural says, "I believe I have some understanding of these dealings you mention. Perhaps an arrangement can be made. What if we were to leave your business dealings in place, without disruption - perhaps even coming to an agreement regarding the goods you deal in. Imagine, if you will, a grand market standing in this zone - one that rivals even the largest and most lucrative of other worlds. A place bustling with traffic, traffic that pays incredibly well for many, many things." His lips form a tight smile. "We would buy the lots from you and perhaps lease them back to you, once development is complete. The alternative of course would be direct competition with our benefactor. That...would not go well for you."
Mar 21, 2024 3:29 am
He considers only briefly before saying, "Contract with the Builders' Guild for construction, favorite rent amounts, and legal guarantees in the lease agreements that our attorneys have you approve, and we can come to an arrangement."
OOC:
Hural, would you care to negotiate with dice? I'll roll opposed in secret, and spend a Threat for a bonus die.
Momentum: 5
Threat: 3

Rolls

Power 6 Understand 6 - Contracts, spending one Threat - (3d20)

Mar 21, 2024 3:34 am
Hural settles into the negotiations.
OOC:
Rolling Duty (it's his duty to Lady Sina to come to agreeable terms here) and Communicate (invoking is Innuendo focus - slipping in the proper veiled threats and offers as needed to cinch a good deal); spending 2 momentum for 2 bonus dice.

EDIT: I believe he has a point of Determination as well - can that be used after the roll to score an additional success?

Rolls

Hural Osaf: DUTY (7) COMMUNICATE(5) - (4d20)

(1951712) = 53

Mar 21, 2024 9:31 pm
OOC:
Spending Determination BEFORE a roll guarantees that one of your dice will be a 1. Rolling it after you roll allows you to reroll the whole dice pool, or some other options that may not be applicable here (such as an extra action in combat).
Mar 22, 2024 1:00 am
Hural maintains his composure, reading the man's responses as they're etched upon his face.
OOC:
Keeping with 3 successes. Thank you!
Mar 22, 2024 1:13 pm
OOC:
Three successes each. A your which means neither of you get one over on the other.

You negotiate well, your Mentat training an even match for shrewd experience. In the end, the amount you settle on isn't robbery for either side.

Meacan and you conduct the bargain. "I'll have my team draw up the contract and submit it for your approval. Welcome to the future grand market!"
Mar 22, 2024 6:12 pm
Rook nods at Hural in appreciation of the mentat's skills. A thrill runs through the spymaster as the group inches closer to their goals. He knows that Sina will be thrilled with their progress. Rook's lofty objective of ruling the underworld also moves closer to becoming a reality.
Mar 23, 2024 6:51 am
"The sentiment is shared, Meacan. Now, there is another matter we were looking into. It's our understanding that there are a number of criminal organizations operating in the area. We understand you've had an arrangement with one, Daniil. We have a mind to limit the number of such enterprises in preparation for the market's development. We could tolerate some such activity, but I'd be curious as to your thoughts on the matter, seeing as we'll soon be partners. If we were to put our resources into one or two such groups, who would you recommend and why?"
Mar 23, 2024 7:50 pm
Meacan frowns. "Criminals? I suppose they are. I'd call them mercenaries, but I'm aware I'm mincing words. His group has served us well, with free rein to do what they want to interlopers as long as they protect those we designate. Maybe it sounds like a protection racket, but that's life in Carthag under the Harkonnens. I personally suspect they appreciate a certain amount of strife, perhaps even respect it."
Mar 24, 2024 10:23 am
Marya moves over towards Rook and Markus.

"Hural really is very good at this." she thinks to herself.

"I'm bene gesserit, I exist only to serve. But I'm also human. And look at us, I'm feeling pride at what this small team is accomplishing. I feel glad, lucky even, that Lady Sina has put us together. I sense the beginning of a sense of fellowship and respect between us - and it would be unwise to deny that this feels good. And also, that it could be useful to cultivate this."

She murmurs to the two of them:

"I don't want to get ahead of ourselves here, but things seem to going very well for Lady Sina's plans. I think our team has earned an evening off to celebrate what we've achieved so far sometime soon, don't you agree?"
OOC:
I'm trying to remember that while Marya is bene gesserit, and they're so focused on serving and self-control, they do also feel fear and anger and love and so on. And that they are prepared to (in a controlled way) let these aspects express themselves. But usually with several other motives going on at the same time. Oh, and as a player I enjoy looking at how relationships between PCs change, which is another reason I'm putting this out there.
OOC:
Is it appropriate to roll something here for Marya to use her Charm trait to make it more likely for Rook and Markus to be interested in socialising together?

Something like Power (8 "Understanding others is the path to true power" as she's trying to build understanding within the team here), Communicate (6), no Focus, but Charming Trait?

BeardHare says:

Markus bows his head slightly to acknowledge Marya. He studies Meacan's body language, but replies softly, "Good fortune has smiled upon us so far."
BeardHare says:

"If Lady Sina agrees with your assessment of our progress, of course."
Mar 24, 2024 7:37 pm
Celebrating was an activity Rook enjoyed and perhaps at times overly so. He wouldn't need convincing and he thought it was a fine idea to get to know those who watched his back and vice versa.

He simply nods and says "Agreed." Rook had few dealings with bene gesserit in the past and looked upon this celebration, should it occur, as a boon.
Mar 24, 2024 10:19 pm
Hural nods to Meacon. "Who is their principal rival?" he asks.
Mar 25, 2024 3:23 am
OOC:
I'm generally against using rolls between PCs, as it reduces the other players' agency. Also especially when Momentum could be added to the pool with good rolls, it seems like subject to abuse. Not to imply that is your actual intent, but I'm just aware of it in principle.
Mar 25, 2024 8:44 am
OOC:
Thanks for that GM. That feels like a more comfortable way to play to me too i.e. to avoid rolls between PCs.
Mar 28, 2024 4:02 pm
Meacan shrugs. "I'm not sure. They have spoken on some conflicts but I don't really know the details."

Bafta steps forward, and says quietly to Marcus, "The Starlight Collective. And no, I don't know why they call themselves that. They like to play rough, and smash anything they can't steal "
Mar 28, 2024 7:08 pm
Marcus nods stealthily to acknowledge Bafta's information.
OOC:
One of Marcus's Assets is "a friend among the mercenary community on Arrakis." As who that is wasn't defined before we started playing, is it possible that Marcus knows this organization and/or his friend is a member of or is familiar with them?
Mar 29, 2024 12:09 am
OOC:
a that's great with me! Want to describe them?
Mar 29, 2024 12:45 am
OOC:
FWIW, Hural has a mind to specifically give Bafta's former employer the boot and try to hire their rival, to ensure they're not bringing someone on board that is more loyal to the Builder's Union than Lady Sina. Marcus's idea can work well with this.
Mar 31, 2024 4:33 pm
When Bafta mentions "The Starlight Collective," Marcus takes note. I wonder if Artemi is still with them. He makes it a point to relay this information to the others after they've safely left the Builders' Guild.
Mar 31, 2024 6:59 pm
Rook will also ask his contact about The Starlight Collective. The more information they had, the better. He figures Meacon knows more than he is letting on but that was to be expected.
Apr 4, 2024 7:53 pm
Seems like a prudent GM might suggest that we should move on from here.

Hural wants to meet with the rival gang, and Marcus has a contact there.

Rook wants to contact his contact and get information about them.

Marya would like an evening on the town first, as a reward for getting as far into the plans as you have.
Apr 5, 2024 12:10 am
OOC:
Yes! Let's move on. :)
Apr 5, 2024 12:22 am
OOC:
Hural would like to cinch up this deal with the organized criminal (mercenary?) element first, as that was part of their mission. Then, yes, he would allow himself some relaxation.
Apr 5, 2024 1:40 am
OOC:
Rook will keep his eyes and ears open while Hural does his thing.
Apr 5, 2024 5:35 am
OOC:
Marya also good to stick with Hural as he pushes to cinch the deal. She'll also have a word with Hural to ask if there's anything in particular she can do, or focus on, that would be helpful for him. If not, she'll keep her usual perceptive watchful eyes open.

And yes, then, once that's done, very much up to celebrate.
Apr 5, 2024 6:31 pm
OOC:
Yep. Waiting for Hural to finish his objective. Marcus keeps watch.
Apr 8, 2024 11:31 pm
OOC:
I'll get us started on the next bit tomorrow.

[ +- ] Rook's Contact
The Starlight Collective - The Sunset Souk
While not grand or safe, the market known as Sunset Souk is deep in the shadows between a Guild heighliner maintenance facility and a partially dismantled harvester factory. The street between the two buildings, and more and more into the factory itself, is a labyrinth of stalls and passages. Most traders here are legitimate, yet within, a few ply darker wares. New IDs, illicit substances, weapons, and contraband (counterfeit and stolen) pass between careful merchants.

Within Lasfire, a hooka bar carved out of the former factory, you find a sturdy man with a half sunburnt face. His name is Artemi.
Apr 10, 2024 4:03 am
"Greetings," Hural says as he calmly approaches the burly man. "We come with a business proposition, one I think Star Cobra may be interested in. If necessary, please advise them it may come with a bonus: Daniil."
Apr 10, 2024 4:22 pm
Rook nods and says, "I am a friend of Shadran Korr's who will vouch for us. As my associate has said, we have an attractive proposal to offer your faction."
Apr 10, 2024 5:00 pm
Upon seeing his old friend, Marcus steps forward and, with a rare smile, greets him, "Artemi. How are you, man?" He reaches out to grab the man's forearm.
Apr 11, 2024 3:33 am
Artemi Dabrowski
He claps Marcus' arm back. "My brother. You're living the highlife it looks like. Protecting rich people from their own shadows?" His grin tells you he's just taking the piss out of you.

To Hural and Rook, with a wary eye to Marya, he leads you through a hole in the wall into the factory proper Large machinery lines the massive space, but it all looks worn out and in disrepair. "We can talk without being overheard. Impress me and I'll bring Star into it. He's not sure there is anything you can offer us that will interest him. We're so different, you see "
Apr 11, 2024 7:25 am
"Fair," Hural says with a nod. "Glad to meet a friend of Marcus's. As it happens, our benefactor is entering into a mutual understanding with the Builder's League for a project. They have recommended we work with a long-standing partner of theirs, man by the name of Daniil, for organizing the more less-than-legal lifeblood that will surely flow through the project we're starting. Thing is, I don't want us to partner with someone that has loyalties to the Builder's Guild. I asked them who Daniil's chief rival was, and that led us to you.

"I'll make this simple. We cut Daniil out and make a place for your group to operate with our support, without the threat of rival groups moving on you. You agree to some minor concessions - keeping murder at minimum within the allotted area and don't interfere with our business dealings, for example - and in exchange, you get extremely rich with little risk."
Apr 11, 2024 3:15 pm
Rook smiles with the shit eating grin he has as the conversation plays out. His sharp eyes cover every nook and cranny of the factory, dwelling on the shadows created by the machinery. There were too many areas for hiding and he didn't trust Artemi. He noted the dilapidated condition of the machinery and the position of any potential escape routes should they need a hasty exit.
Apr 11, 2024 5:33 pm
Qralloq says:
He claps Marcus' arm back. "My brother. You're living the highlife it looks like. Protecting rich people from their own shadows?" His grin tells you he's just taking the piss out of you.
Marcus chuckles. "Shadows can be scary, bro. It's where the assassins hide."
Apr 13, 2024 2:33 am
Artemi Dabrowski
He frowns at the offer, wondering what the catch is. "What's the catch?" He flips an old style coin across his knuckles, a very old habit of his, Marcus notes. "War with the other gang serves no one, at least in the short term."
Apr 13, 2024 7:38 am
"No catch, and no war if we can help it. We know we can't cut out all of the less-than-legal activity from such a project. It'll be a grand market, lots of buying and selling, lots of opportunity. We just want to make sure we can be on good terms with those who establish their territory there. We would hope that, with our support, nobody would dare to challenge your position there. As I said, we would ask for concessions - mostly limitations on your activities so as to keep it reasonably safe and productive, but you'll stand to earn a lot of money."
Apr 13, 2024 9:25 am
OOC:
This is me as a player feeling too burned out right now to play anything. I'd love to join back again when I'm feeling better, but also understand if that doesn't work out.

For now, this is a retro-active post for Marya on the way to the Sunset Souk - mechanically, I'll stop as a player following the story, and will ping you back again when, hopefully soon, I feel well enough to join again.

And maybe Marya gets up to something interesting while she's away from the party.

If this doesn't work as an approach to dealing with my absence, totally open for any alternative that's better for you.
On the way to the Sunset Souk, Marya receives a message on her Emergency Transmitter - looks up from it, and says to the others

"I have to go. I'll be back with you again as soon as I can. I'm sorry, but this can't wait. I wish you all well."

And with that, she heads out on her own, without looking back.
Apr 13, 2024 6:05 pm
Rook's eyes follow the coin as it flips from knuckle to knuckle on Artemi's hand. Shadows, yes. He knew all about those being a frequenter of them himself.

A thought strikes Rook. Something Artemi said. "What would be the long-term advantage of a war? You said at least in the short term. I'm curious."

Best to get the man to talk and reveal whatever he would.
Apr 14, 2024 3:26 am
Artemi Dabrowski
He's about to answer the Mentat, and then Rook asks him a question. "War creates a, what you call it, an industry, no a demand for mercenaries. I'm sure you know what I mean."

To Hural he says, "Okay. You sold me. I'll bring Star Cobra to meet you."

He presses a remote and says, "I think you want to hear this. "

You can hear bootsteps in the factory, and a hardened looking warrior enters.

Star Cobra
"I'm Star Cobra, if we help you, we'll want help in return."
Apr 14, 2024 5:43 am
Hural relays the offer once again to Star Cobra then considers his words. "I think you misunderstand. We are not asking you to help us, we are offering you a job - a turf free of competition and with the silent backing of our benefactor who will be managing the project. There is only upside as far as your group is concerned. The only thing we gain is some amount of certainty in who controls the territory. I think we can entertain your request, if you can tell me what help it is you offer."
Apr 14, 2024 5:55 pm
"I do," Rook replies to Artemi, expecting that exact response.

When Star Cobra arrives on the scene Rook assesses the man openly. He looked tough, capable, confident and not someone Rook would enjoy tussling with without the advantage of surprise.
Apr 14, 2024 11:37 pm
Qralloq says:
"War creates a, what you call it, an industry, no a demand for mercenaries. I'm sure you know what I mean."
Marcus nods, expecting an answer like this from his old friend. His chosen path suits him.

Star Cobra

Qralloq

Apr 15, 2024 3:35 pm
Star Cobra
He responds with the non unexpected routines of the criminal mercenary - if they wanted scraps from the table, they'd have jobs working in a factory or spice harvester. So what's key to them is a kind of autonomy, where perhaps they work for you on some level, but operate more like a mercenary outfit than employees. Of course, they'd have to curtail some of their activities, that's a given.

If that's something that Hural would agree to, then it comes down to contract price. One of their conditions will be for you to rid them of a problem, someone to whom they owe a debt but can't risk taking on on their own. It's a minor house attached to the Harkonnens.
Apr 15, 2024 7:07 pm
"I think these terms fair, and only what would be expected. We had not considered bringing you in as employees and did expect you to maintain autonomy of your organization. We can discuss the details of any limitations within the area later, but among them would be the typical protection racket, try to keep the market safe while collecting your payments, and keeping violent crime to a minimum. I would not myself agree to ridding you of this problem without the consent of those that may risk themselves to do so, however."

Hural looks to the others. "Marcus, Rook, what do you think?"
Apr 16, 2024 3:01 am
Marcus considers the terms before replying. "I am concerned that eliminating this minor house allied to the Harkonnens will carry great risk. It will surely raise the ire of Harkonnens and quite likely draw unwanted attention to us. But this is a decision above my pay grade, as it were."
Apr 16, 2024 5:59 am
Hural nods. "This, I fear, is above mine as well," he says, turning his attention back to Star Cobra. "I wont' say not to your request at this time, but I will need to take this to our benefactor. Moving against a House, even a minor one, carries risk, as Marcus rightfully points out. I imagine you care not how this debt problem goes away, so we may have options. To properly consider it, I need to know two things - who would be the target, and how much do you owe?"
Apr 16, 2024 2:04 pm
Rook slow nods at Hural and Marcus in agreement. In his estimation, eliminating a minor house was a great risk and one he didn't feel had any value for them. A significant risk for little gain and lots to lose. No, he was against it. The answer to Hural's questions were key.

"I'm not for eliminating any minor house. There is little return to be had by us for doing that."
Apr 17, 2024 2:55 am
Star Cobra
"House Martel. They had us steal a cache of lasguns then another group hit us on the way to deliver. I lost the whole crew. We took them our plea but they want the lasguns. We can't afford that."
Apr 17, 2024 3:19 am
Hural nods, "That is quite the problem." He takes a moment to discuss the lasgun cache - how many guns and the number of his crew, so as to get a better idea of the value of the debt. "You will know soon enough if we have received approval to make this go away for you. If not, well, I suspect you simply won't hear from us again on the matter." He looks to the others then back to Star Cobra. "I do hope we are able to do business - thank you for your time."

"Marcus, Rook - do either of you have any questions to address before we take our leave?"
Apr 17, 2024 1:16 pm
"No, I have no questions. I think we covered everything." Rook continues to size up Star Cobra. Every motion, every tic, can tell a story.

Rook will be vigilantly looking for ambushes on the way out.
Apr 17, 2024 5:09 pm
Marcus's ears perk up at the mention of lasguns. He wonders if there's any connection to the attack the other day. He makes a mental note to bring this up to Hural and Rook after their departure.

"Nor I," Marcus answers Hural. To Artemi, he says, "Good seeing you, bro. Hopefully, we'll get to work together."
Apr 18, 2024 3:29 am
Artemi Dabrowski
Artemi gives Marcus a friendly (but manly) arm clasping. "And you too. I'm glad our paths crossed again and not at the opposite ends of a battlefield!" He laughs.

Star Cobra
He discusses the details with you, and it isn't a giant cache, but lasguns are prohibitively expensive for anyone but a House.
Apr 18, 2024 5:53 am
Hural nods to the men politely and leaves with the others. Once they are comfortably away and safe from prying ears, he looks to the men. "I know it was Marya's idea, and we do still have work to do, but these negotiations have been...arduous. Perhaps we should find that drink before we report back to Lady Sina."

"Agreed. Let's step back from it, clear our heads and then revisit it. I don't trust any of them needless to say, but that is always the situation, isn't it? There is no gain without risk. We have to decide how much risk is acceptable. Now let's go find that drink."

"I have half a mind to buy the debt, if Lady Sina agrees. I'd rather see Star Cobra's group indebted to us, than enter into an open arrangement with a group that has business history, and perhaps loyalty, with the Builder's Guild. If we keep them on their toes, less chance they will conspire against us. But no, it is best not to trust any of them."

He walks with them down several side streets, looking for a comfortable-looking watering hole to duck into.
Apr 19, 2024 3:29 am
You're close to any number of bars, where there rich can get fresh water and the poor can get grey water.

You find a relatively modest yet upscale place called The Sinkhole and obtain a central table that offers privacy. A folk musician from Richese plays a one-man band kind show, with clever mechanics playing some of the instruments.
Apr 19, 2024 2:45 pm
Rook feels oddly entranced by the one man show, wondering how the musician manages it. "Fascinating," he remarks before finding a relatively private table and getting down to business.

"Buying their debt is a very good idea, Hural. It gives us more control of a situation which has many moving parts. We don't know if Sina would agree to funding all that though. How much do you think they are in the hole for?"

"Lasguns aren't cheap, but I believe wiping out a house, even a minor one, could prove more costly in other ways."
Apr 22, 2024 2:02 pm
A shabbily dressed server comes over and offers you menus. Choices of flavored waters, alcohol, and food items are available, along with a number of largely inedible Harkonnen "delicacies".

Once you've decided, he heads off to procure the order.
Apr 22, 2024 5:21 pm
After the server has departed, Marcus asks in a hushed voice, "Do you think that the stolen lasgun shipment has anything to do with the attack outside the Parato the other day?"
Apr 22, 2024 6:17 pm
"I wouldn't be surprised." Marcus looks around the establishment again to assure himself that no one can hear them talking. The performer helps with drowning out their voices.
Apr 23, 2024 12:35 am
"It very well could. Star Cobra is in receipt of these lasguns though - so if that's the case, it would mean their group may have had something to do with the attack. Something to consider as we complete negotiations."

Did you want to continue here?

OOC:
I have mixed feelings. I'm happy to keep playing Hural - I like him as a character, and I like the story we are building, but I do feel the loss of BeardHare and their character as another 'face' for the group. I don't mind the posting, but I feel that it's leaving Windy and ForeverDED in a position of sitting back, reacting, and waiting for conversations to complete, and I don't know how satisfying that is for them.

All in all, I leave it up to them, and our faithful GM :)
Apr 27, 2024 3:04 am
OOC:
I'm content with the role that Marcus plays. Being unfamiliar with the rules, being in the background enables me to become more familiar with them without slowing gameplay down. I don't believe as a player I'd be good enough to scheme and plan.

But I don't know if that's what Q was asking. I thought that he was asking if we had more to discuss before moving on. And I'm not sure that there is. If Marya (BeardHare) were here, I'm sure that Hural and she would have plenty to discuss. I presented the one thought that Marcus had about what's going on and that's probably it. As for socializing, I'm pretty sure Rook is fairly new to him, so he's treading lightly there. And I don't know how social Mentats get. ;) So as for moving on, yes, I believe that I'm good to go.
Apr 27, 2024 5:21 am
OOC:
Ahh in that case, I misunderstood. Hural is good to skip forward from here as needed. We drink and enjoy each others company I suppose. Hural would likely calculate the exact amount of alcohol he would care to ingest down to the milliliter so as to reach perfect, peak inebriation without losing control of his mental faculties.

I think his plan would be to go to Lady Sina and report back after they've sobered up appropriately.
Apr 27, 2024 12:59 pm
I share the same feelings as FD as far as Rook goes. I'm learning as well and enjoying the process.

I also thought Q was asking about moving on rather than continuing with the game.

Happy to eat drink, be merry and then leave.

if you're willing, let's finish this mini arc and then we can discuss continuing or not. I think we're about 2/3 away through my plan.
You return to Lady Sina with much news to report. You find her examining reports on a view scanner, and making notes on a sheet of paper with a pen in an older fashioned way

"Hello, I'm glad you're here. What progress have you made?"
Apr 28, 2024 8:58 pm
Hural steps forward, "Lady Sina, it is our pleasure to report we have made an agreement with the Builder's Guild that should benefit our goals quite nicely. They are willing to sell us the specific properties they have bought up, with an agreement to lease them back once we complete development. This will allow us to build and develop how we see fit and ensures they will not keep us from our goals in designing the market. As to the lease contracts, we will need to see that they are agreeable to both parties, but we should be able to find room for them within the market and specify a requirement for their tenancy to benefit our goals there."

"As to the the gangs in the area, the builder's guild was in league with one of them. We were able to find out their competitor - a group led by a man named Star Cobra. We met with him and he has a proposition for partnership." He explains the lasgun shipment and their debt to the other House. "We advised we would need to discuss how to proceed on this matter, but if we come to a solution, they will operate under our guidelines within the market, providing protection for vendors and keep violent crime to a minimum."

He pauses, and adds, "If I may - I have a thought: if we were to purchase the debt from the other House, Star Cobra would then owe us. We could use that to our advantage..."
OOC:
Can Hural use Calculated Prediction in order to weigh options for a long-term relationship with Star Cobra? Would it work more in our favor to simply erase the debt, or to purchase the debt and hold it over their heads? Would they be more or less likely to turn on us in either situation?
[ +- ] Calculated Prediction (Mentat)
Apr 28, 2024 9:19 pm
Rook who mostly remains quiet in matters such as these speaks up when a subject he is familiar with comes up.

"I think it is very important to define what "minimum" entails when it comes to an agreement about reining in violent crime. The protection piece would also need to be nailed down in detail."
Apr 29, 2024 6:19 pm
@C1nder Hural can certainly use that ability, I think that's a great usage case for the talent.

May 1, 2024 12:20 am
Hural's machine like intuition fragments into too many possibilities to nail down. He soon abandons the effort as fruitless.

Sina asks detailed questions about your experience, learning the names and personalities of the key players through your observations.

Toward the end, you see something begin to tweak in her eyes. Still, she leaves that thought untouched until the end of her questions.

"You mentioned that they have a deal with a renegade spice harvester. I would give much to get access to that much raw spice. Once we've concluded the arrangements with the Builders Guild, let's pursue that. But back to the Starlight Collective, they indicated that they lost a shipment of lasguns that they had procured. We could replace that stock easily enough. What is expensive for a street gang is less so for an Imperial House. However, we've had a run in with a gang equipped improbably with lasguns. I'd like to know if there is a connection before we step into this opportunity."
May 6, 2024 7:12 am
"We, too, had wondered if there was a connection between the attack the other day and these stolen lasguns. The spice harvester is under the control of the mercenary that has been working with the Builder's Guild. We had been looking to cut him out of the plan, but the harvester would make a valuable resource. Perhaps we could loop them into that side of our plan.

But first the lasguns. Star Cobra said they came across this stolen shipment, and it is likely the same as those the Starlight Collective lost. That of course means this other House may be targeting the Starlight Collective's shipments, which could prove very bad for our business."
May 8, 2024 1:01 am
"We need more information. The Starlight Collective will make a powerful ally but only if they're not under the heel of a third party. It's time we found out more about the attack at the cantina. Track them down and find out where they obtained those lasguns. I'll meet up with the Builders Guild and further the plan to foster the Grand market. As to the spice harvester, let's not forget it's there and if the opportunity arises, become silent partners. "
May 8, 2024 9:29 am
Hural bows his head, "Ever at your service, Lady Sina. We will see to it."

Once they take their leave, he turns to the others. "It appears we are to return to speak with Star Cobra again sooner than expected. His group got those lasguns from somewhere and we need to see how willing he will be in divulging where."
May 9, 2024 2:24 am
"Perhaps if we explain our reason for wanting to know, they'll be more forthcoming."
May 9, 2024 5:18 pm
"I think they will want a little more than just an explanation in order ot be more forthcoming, don't you think Marcus?"

In Rook's experience crucial information was rarely given away for free.
May 10, 2024 12:09 am
Marcus shrugs. "If part of the explanation includes what our subsequent punitive actions against the transgressors will be, they might be more inclined to share."
May 10, 2024 6:56 pm
"True," Rook replies, nodding his head in agreement.
May 13, 2024 9:53 am
"No time like the present, then. Let's return to Star Cobra and have another discussion with the man, to see what we might learn."
May 13, 2024 6:05 pm
After making arrangements, you find yourself in the same partially demolished factory.

Star Cobra
"What news from my fine upperclass friends?"
May 16, 2024 8:37 am
"Our benefactor is considering how to handle your situation, so decisions have not yet been settled. We came to explore that a bit. You said that came into possession of these lasguns. Do you still have them? Were there others from your source that were not obtained by yourself?"
May 18, 2024 2:20 am
Star Cobra
He first repeats what he said earlier. "House Martel had us steal a cache of lasguns then another group hit us on the way to deliver. I lost the whole crew. We took them our plea but they want the lasguns. We can't afford that."

He thinks on the specifics of your question. "Yes, there is one lasgun we kept out, and was not stolen by the robbers. Your welcome to examine it. As to the group, we have little to go on, since there were no survivors. I can tell you where it occurred, you might have better luck finding witnesses than a bunch of mercenaries."
May 18, 2024 3:21 pm
"We'll see about sussing out this group that hit yours. Once we learn more, we can assess how to clear the debt, if our benefactor agrees. I would like to take you up on your offers - both to inspect the weapon, as well as to be shown where the attacked happened."
May 19, 2024 1:28 am
"That's good thinking, keeping one weapon back. We should examine that lasgun first, then be shown the location of the attack."

Once the information had been shared, Rook was comfortable adding his opinion all the while scanning the ruined factory for any threats.
May 19, 2024 4:44 pm
Marcus nods in agreement, curious to know if the thieves were the same ones that were behind the attack outside the Parato Parlor.
May 19, 2024 5:23 pm
He has the lasgun produced, Marcus' friend bringing it out. You each have a chance to examine it.

Let's have each of you make an Understand test, choosing an appropriate Drive for your character. I don't think any of you have a relevant Focus, but convince me if I'm wrong. This will be D4, so between you, four successes will be needed to obtain revealing information from the lasgun.

You go back and forth, putting together subtle clues, discern that the lasgun is marked with a technical sigil that indicates it was made for House Bakhtiar.
May 28, 2024 6:03 pm

"Yes, the Lady Sina informed us the other day about them. She stated that House Bakhtiar sought an alliance to obtain House Heslin's water processes for their own micro-hydroponics holdings. She rejected them, fearing that if they learned of her family's intentions, House Harkonnen would be told forthwith. And you know what would happen then."
May 29, 2024 4:55 am
"So the guns were intended to go to House Bakhtiar, but were intercepted by these mystery thieves before you could deliver them to House Martel. It may be prudent to learn how House Martel knew of the shipment in the first place, but first let's investigate the site of the attack."
May 29, 2024 11:45 pm
The Attack Site

Marcus' friend Artemi leads you to the place where their band was ambushed. When you arrive, you find a quiet side street, but there are people going about their business before the days heat gets too oppressive.

Artemi Dabrowski
He points say a side alley. "Best we can tell, they emerged from that alley, and ambushed the ground car with the weapons." He does not say lasguns, as he doesn't know who is all listening. "They took out our men, and then drove off with the car and the ... cargo. No one here claims to have seen anything."
May 30, 2024 9:05 pm
Marcus tries to recall if this is the same alley where he pursued the attackers after the incident at the Parato Parlor.
May 30, 2024 11:51 pm
Marcus realizes it's too hard to tell. These alleys are mazes and it may or may not lead to the same spot he chased those people. You're likely a half kilometer away from the Parato Parlor.
May 31, 2024 1:55 am
"I do," Rook replies to Marcus, when he jogs his memory about House Bakhtiar.

Later, when Artemi leads the group to the ambush site, Rook does he usual surveillance of the area and sees if he recognizes any of the other people going about their day.
Jun 3, 2024 6:41 am
Hural scans the area carefully. Why here? he asks himself, trying to gleam what he can from the location. "This wouldn't have been a random attack. They picked this location for a reason."

He looks to their guide, "What time of day this occur?"
Jun 4, 2024 2:17 am
Artemi frowns and looks up at the sky, shielding his eyes. "Three in the afternoon, the hottest part of the day. Why do you ask?" By his own vocalization pattern, you think he's putting that together as well. "The crew travelled then to avoid the crowds, less people would see them pass."
Jun 6, 2024 7:44 am
"Did your crew lift the weapons at that time and immediately transport them until the ambush? Or did you obtain the weapons earlier in the day, then wait to transport them?"
Jun 6, 2024 6:54 pm
Artemi Dabrowski
"They waited. It was Byron's idea, to wait until the streets were empty. He wasn't on the run, though. He came with me to secure the hideout."
Jun 7, 2024 6:19 am
"I see," Hural says with an even tone. He looks into the sky a moment, then closes his eyes, feeling the warmth bear down on his face. Eventually he levels his eyes back on Artemi. "They knew your crew took the weapons, they knew where you'd be and at what time. They came prepared enough to overwhelm your crew, so they had an idea of your numbers. Tell me, it was Byron's idea to also to join you in securing the hideout, wasn't it?"
Jun 7, 2024 8:12 pm
Artemi Dabrowski
"Not positive, but I wouldn't be surprised." He gestures at the area. "We can question him later but he's not here, so anyone else you want to talk to while we're here? Maybe some of the locals will answer to you when they wouldn't say 'boo' to us."
Jun 8, 2024 5:04 pm
"It wouldn't hurt to do some more digging. See if anyone can give us more details. Offer some insight on this Byron person. Then we question Byron."

Rooks radar zeroes in on Byron being a key piece of the heist puzzle.

"What does this Byron look like? Any distinguishing features. A scar or something obvious? I'm thinking that if we question people, they might not know his name."
Jun 8, 2024 9:15 pm
He describes Byron as having short, curly black hair and a thin beard, with pale cracked skin.

Let's make this a Difficulty 4 test for gathering information, so all three of you can roll and see if you accumulate 4 successes between you. Choose your Drive and skill (I'd suggest Communicate) and any relevant focuses, and roll.

Until Rook applies his special method of intimidation.

The man huddles against the wall, cowering in fear of the promise in Rook's eyes. A promise that no matter what happens, Rook wouldn't lose a wink of sleep.

"They were Fremen, but only, their eyes were wrong. Not blue. Stillsuits, yes, under desert cloaks. All authentic, but I swear, they were offworlders."

Questioning him farther, Marcus recognizes a description. A man with a unibrow and a blue tattoo of a spiral on his temple.
[ +- ] Marcus knows...
Jun 24, 2024 10:25 pm
Marcus confides in the others the description and identification of the mercenary. He adds, "This is an organization with deep pockets and the resources to pull off such a heist. Not the type to be shy about using lasguns either." He tries to recall if he saw any of the assailants outside the Parato fitting that description.
Jun 30, 2024 12:59 am
"It seems they wanted people to think they were Fremen, I wonder if there is some motive there beyond just concealing their own identities. I agree the group must have access to a wealth of resources to pull this off as quietly and quickly as they did. My guess, is this Byron with Star Kobra's group will have some answers to these questions."
Jun 30, 2024 1:25 am
"A vendetta perhaps against the Fremen? Kill two birds with one stone? But I agree, this group must have very powerful friends and really, how many groups like that are there, with so much power and bottomless pockets, and a beef to pick with the Fremen?"

Rook turns back to the man huddled against the wall. "Shall we let him go now. I think we have enough."
Jun 30, 2024 11:22 am
Hural nods, "Yes, we've tormented the man enough." He stares icy daggers into the man's eyes, "But not a word of this interaction to anyone. Do you understand?"
Jun 30, 2024 5:17 pm
To put emphasis on Hural's demands, Marcus slides his sword out of his hilt just enough for the man to see it.
Jul 9, 2024 2:20 pm

You've found out much of what you needed to investigate further. How do you proceed?

You find him chopping the head off a lizard, ready to butcher it for the stew pot. He's got short, curly black hair and a thin beard, with pale cracked skin. Jul 28, 2024 6:33 pm
"We found a local who was on the receiving end of my brand of persuasion," Rook says smirking as he cleans an imaginary piece of food from between his teeth with his dagger.

"The man admitted that the attackers were disguised as Fremen, Stillsuits and all, but their eyes gave them away. Marcus was able to identify Senjin Draig, a mercenary with the Void Banner. Big bounty hunters that group are, and possible spies for the emperor."

Marcus, do you suspect the Emperor is behind this? And to what end since the Harkonnen rule at his order?"
Jul 29, 2024 5:51 pm
"It certainly is a possibility. At the risk of speculation, perhaps the Emperor doesn't trust the Harkonnens. Then again, who would. The Void Banner could be a means to ensure that the Baron is being completely forthright with him. Or perhaps, the Emperor wishes to goad the Baron into hastening the pace at which he executes the Emperor's will or meets quota on spice production. Politics aren't my strong suit." He turns to face Hural. "I would defer to Hural's analytical mind to tie these threads together."
Jul 30, 2024 8:17 am
"It is difficult to say at this point," Hural says, "I agree that much would be speculation at this point. The merc leader looks at Hural. "Tell him."
Aug 2, 2024 8:47 pm
Hural looks to Marcus and gestures with his eyes to the door, silently asking him to bar the exit.

"Byron, hello. We wanted to ask some questions about your affiliations outside of Star Cobra's group. Particularly, the Void Banner." He cocks his head slightly, watching the man's eyes and hands with equal care. He searches for signs of a weapon, or of worry.
Aug 3, 2024 1:27 pm
Byron looks in surprise at Hural and bolts. He turns and runs out of the room, dodging through the hideout and out into the street.

Spending two points of Threat for Byron to act first. This presumes that you were ready for him to bolt, hence the cost.

Let's do this as a chase scene. What are the rules for a chase scene? Good question. You will have to "defeat" Byron by successfully achieving successes in chasing him. Your target is 6, and a successful Skill plus drive with an applicable focus roll gains you 2 points plus the quality of an asset used for the attempt. What is an asset? It's gear or another asset on your sheet that you'll use to make the attempt. If you don't have such an asset, your legs are an asset of 0 quality.

You run out after him, and as a trio working together, drive him into Marcus' waiting trap. He stops, eyes on Marcus' armaments.

Skidding to a halt, "Let me go," he hisses, looking over his shoulder. "it's bigger than you can imagine."
Aug 5, 2024 10:17 am
"That only means you have more to say than we imagine. You're coming back with us, to Star Cobra, and will tell us everything. Unless you wish to unburden yourself now, before my friends drag it out of you."

Rook takes a few threatening steps toward him at Hural's mention of Friends, and nods menacingly.
Aug 5, 2024 5:06 pm
Marcus keeps his hand on his sword and his focus on Byron's eyes, searching for an indication that the man might still run.
Aug 5, 2024 5:37 pm
Byron grinds his teeth seeing no way out.

"Yeah I sold them out. Worked on it for awhile, too. Months back, Star Cobra took a job and hit a merchant and took everything, lived like dukes for awhile. Then when the solari ran out, they went back to their ways. Only, the merchant was connected to House Bakhtier, and now there is a price on their heads. So when the job came up from House Martel I sold that info to House Bakhtier. Martel now wants the lasguns back but Bakhtier has them. I got away with it too, and was going to quit the gang soon, least, as soon as the heat died. " He looks up at the Arrakis sky, blasting it's intolerable heat down on you, not unaware of the dual meaning.

"So you want in? I'll turn on Bakhtier, set up a meet. Then you can do whatever you want. They're your enemies, I think. If you work for that bitch Heslin. They really don't like her. Way they were talking, I bet they use them to make a hit on her soon."
Aug 5, 2024 9:37 pm
"Why would we trust you? You betray everyone. What's to stop you from putting us in a trap? What guarantees do you offer?"

Rook may not be the most scrupulous of men, but Byron made him look like a perfect man.
Aug 5, 2024 9:46 pm
"No no you got me all wrong. I'm loyal. Those others they were criminals, terrorists. I've got four kids to feed, I just want stability and a steady pay cheque. You pay me enough, you'll never find a more loyal, more attractive, more devoted servant."

Oh yeah, he exudes integrity. Not.
Aug 5, 2024 9:51 pm
Leave one of your children ... no make that two of your youngest ... leave them with us as surety. Rook glares at the man as if he's ready to spit.
Aug 6, 2024 2:01 am
Marcus restrains the urge to cock an eyebrow at Rook's request of Byron. He waits for Hural to weigh in.
Aug 6, 2024 8:17 am
"We have the intel we need, we don't need him. Let's secure the man and return him to Star Cobra - I'm sure his boss will want to have words with him. Surely, Star Cobra will know where Byron lives anyways - we don't need his kids, we just need to know where they are, if we find further cooperation lacking." Hural glares at Byron, his intent clear.
Aug 6, 2024 4:37 pm
Rook glares back. "Alright, but they can always move the children." Having made his opinion clear, he was resigned to agreeing with Hural's plan.
Aug 6, 2024 8:23 pm
Marcus nods in agreement with Hural. To Byron, he says, "Make sure you don't run off this time. You wouldn't want your children to become orphans."

You return to the hideout and Star Cobra chains up Byron.

Star Cobra
Once you've filled him in, he says, "What's the move then? I'll leave this one for the sandworms after he's been thoroughly rewarded for his actions."
Aug 7, 2024 6:55 am
Hural looks to the others, "What do you think? We know now who has the lasguns. Seems to me House Bakhtier must also have been behind the attack the other day."
Aug 7, 2024 5:38 pm
"The Lady Sina will not be pleased to learn this information, but she must be briefed. We have the answers to her questions that will dictate her next moves."
Aug 8, 2024 6:08 am
"Agreed." Hural looks to Rook, "Shall we return, then?"

"Star Cobra, I feel our partnership is turning towards reality. We will hope to resolve this matter swiftly. If additional support beyond the three of us is needed, would you be willing to lend a hand...if it means hitting back those who hit you?"
Aug 8, 2024 1:40 pm
Yes we should update her.

Rook turns to Star Cobra, curious if he will agree to help, if needed.

Star Cobra

Star Cobra
Of course, and alliance with a minor house would be a boon to his prospects in one way, while limiting them in another. He values his independence, and says as much. "In this instance, I would do so without hesitation. I will remind you that we're a band that values freedom, and so any future alliances would have to be negotiated on a case by case basis."

He's only hedging his bets, but by his tone is grateful for this opportunity to put these things right.
Aug 10, 2024 2:03 am
"Excellent. We'll return when we have more to discuss - likely tomorrow," Hural says with a thin smile. "Until then, enjoy your time with this traitor. You should know, he tried to sell out his new friends to us if we agreed to let him go. He deserves little mercy and cannot be trusted." Hural doesn't even meet Byron's eyes as he turns to leave, allowing his fate to rest in Star Cobra's hands.
Aug 10, 2024 5:12 pm
Marcus nods to Star Cobra, then follows Hural out the door.
Aug 10, 2024 8:17 pm
Rook leaves last after a long threatening glare hurled at Byron. His eyes speak volumes; something akin to I'll be back and you won't like it.
Aug 12, 2024 12:38 am
At the Parato Palace

Not one to shirk her passtimes for the sake of fear, you determine with communication with her household that she is at the very same gambling house where you were attacked by mercenaries with lasguns. Of course, she has contacts there which aid her business dealings under her public cover as a spoiled and hedonistic noblewoman.

You arrive there, and see several of her household guards camped in the area, keeping an eye out for enemies.
Aug 13, 2024 8:01 am
Hural approaches the guards. He knows he could walk right past them, but calculates they might appreciate the show of respect - something he was keen to provide for their services in guarding his Lady with such care anyways. "We are here to see Lady Sina. We have important news."
Aug 13, 2024 2:34 pm
Ever wary from the last time they were in this location, and despite the guards, he still carefully observed their surroundings.
Aug 14, 2024 2:33 am
Marcus nods his head with respect towards the guards.
Aug 14, 2024 3:25 am
They're on their best behavior with the three of you around. "Perimeter is secure. No signs of Fremen assassins, and if they come, they'll never make it inside, sir."

Inside you find her at an empty parato table, reviewing reports on a viewscreen. A half empty bottle of wine sits beside her and her hair looks a little frazzled.
Aug 14, 2024 6:26 am
"Lady Sina," Hural says in greeting along with a polite bow. "We have news to report, but best we discuss where we are sure there are no other ears."
Aug 14, 2024 2:31 pm
Surprised to see Lady Sina in such a state, Rook dispenses with any pleasantries and hurries to her side. "Are you well, Lady? Has something happened?"

He wonders if there was some bad news.
Aug 14, 2024 4:56 pm
Marcus bows to the Lady Sina. He waits for Hural to present their findings.
Aug 15, 2024 2:13 am
She shows you a small device, a kind of capacitor. "Richese was once the undisputed center of development of many clever devices."

She hands it to Marcus. "Much like a shield generator, it will grant us privacy. But it won't explode if hit with a lasgun, it's not that high powered."

To Rook, she whispers, "It's just an act. "
Aug 15, 2024 6:12 am
Hural looks to Marcus to activate the device. Once he does, he lays forth what they've learned. "The attackers here the other day - they were not Fremen, but instead dressed to look the part. They were, in fact, members of House Bakhtier. Why they attacked you, we do not yet know. The lasguns were stolen by Star Cobra's gang on behalf of House Martell. However, one of Star Cobra's own men sold them out to House Bakhtier, who hit them on their delivery route. That part of the problem has been solved. Now House Martell is putting pressure on Star Cobra to pay them for the lasguns, or get them back."

He watches her expression as she takes in the information before continuing. "We wish to know your designs with these houses, so as to determine our next steps. We could ingratiate ourselves to both Star Cobra and House Martell, should we pay off the debt, or otherwise get the lasguns back. This would increase friction with House Bakthier, though considering their attack upon you, my Lady, I venture that hitting them back might be the just course of action."

Rook listens quietly as is his way but becomes animated at the idea of hitting House Bakhtier, nodding enthusiastically at Hural's suggestion.
Aug 15, 2024 3:03 pm
She leans forward, listening intently to the mentat's summary. "Bakhtier is an enemy to most. To me, they're a rival. The Harkonnen dislike the costs that Bakhtier's micro-hydroponics projects cost them. The Fremen have some disagreement with them over water that I don't understand, but the Fremen have strong opinions on water rights."

She leans back. "Admago Bakhtier has pursued me for a marriage alliance. I suspect he believes that my House's expertise in water reclamation would pair nicely with their own hydroponics methods. However, if there is anyone that Bakhtier hate more than anyone, it's the Emperor. My family's ties to House Corrino would be exposed to the empire. The Landsraat would see us destroyed if the truth ever came out about what we've done for Shaddam IV in attempting to synthesize spice, even if that ultimately was unsuccessful. No, Admago is no friend of mine."
Aug 16, 2024 12:44 am
Marcus attentively listens to the conversation. He offers, "Perhaps Bakhtier is tapping into one or more of the Fremen cisterns. I understand that the Fremen consider them sacred, so if Bakhtier has trespassed, the Fremen would be outraged."
Aug 16, 2024 7:58 am
"The attack here the other day seems a strange way to further a marriage alliance. Perhaps he wishes to scare you into it, that would explain the Fremen disguises - make you think you have enemies and encourage you to seek safety through such an agreement."
Aug 16, 2024 2:02 pm
Rook looks questioningly at Sina at the mention of a marriage alliance. He agreed with Hural's assessment. It wasn't exactly the way to win a lady over.

"I agree with Hural. It's the only way an attack makes sense unless we are missing something. Is there an important detail we have overlooked, I wonder? Marcus' idea is also worth considering."
Aug 17, 2024 1:35 am
"They want someone allied with them against the Fremen, perhaps. Likely both, though it would be naïve to assume their choice of disguise was not made with intent."
Aug 17, 2024 1:58 am
She frowns subtly, her eyebrows barely moving, but you see it for what it is. "We could fish for the expected bait, as the wet worlders might say. If this is the ploy, to use the Fremen as a false but implacable enemy, then Admago should leap at any sense that I have a reason to hate them."

She pours you all a drink, a melon flavored water it turned out, with very little alcohol.

"How do we draw him out?"
Aug 17, 2024 2:42 am
Hural takes a sip of the drink. He quite likes it, in spite of its lack of spirit. "We give him what he wants. Write him a letter, let him know your trusted advisors wish to deliver a response to his marriage request. We set the place and time. Star Cobra has committed already to join his men in a confrontation, so we could leverage them. But how to get him to bring the lasguns..."

He considers, then adds, "It would be a bold move, my Lady, perhaps too reckless, but if his life were on the line, perhaps it and be traded for the lasguns. We could even play the part of bystanders in the attack, let him believe it is simply a returned bevy from Star Cobra's men, to lessen the tie back to us. Should he learn later we have allied with Star Cobra in some fashion, he'll connect the dots, but by that point the damage to his pride will have been done and you will be indirectly confirmed as more of a threat than he realized. For good or ill."

Marcus takes the offered drink. It was a rare opportunity to partake of alcohol, and he didn't wish to risk offending the lady of the house. He listened to Hural's plan. It was a risk, but it was a well thought out plan as was the custom of the mentat.
Aug 17, 2024 8:14 pm
Rook preferred much stronger drinks, but any refreshment was welcome to his parched lips. He hadn't realized how thirsty he had become until the cool tasty liquid cooled his mouth.

"I like Hural's plan. Risky yes but we are mitigating it somewhat."
Aug 18, 2024 4:28 pm
She considers the option, and begins to see the opportunities it would present. "Very good, I'll intuit some concern about the Fremen and an attack, although he'll know that I know he would know that rumors have spread about that. Perhaps language about 'having become recently exposed' or so forth."

She leans forward, and says, "Marya has exposed a member of House Bakhtier. Her name is Elara Gomez. I'm told that we can funnel 'secrets' through her, ones that Elara will have learned from her new friend Marya. Any suggestions in using her in setting this up?"
Aug 18, 2024 10:22 pm
Hural considers a moment, "This is good. Too good not to use in support of the ruse. Perhaps we feed this Elara that you've become increasingly paranoid and fearful of the Fremen since the attack. If that was truly his goal, to make you feel threatened and consider his hand as a strengthening measure against the Fremen, this should help lower his guard against us. We can have some of our own men, even, dress to look like members of Star Cobra's group, perhaps."
Aug 21, 2024 3:31 am
She considers this with some thought. "How certain are we of this information? Once we're committed, then it will be increasingly more difficult to extricate ourselves if new information comes to light." She's not looking to back out, but merely thinking it through from as many angles as she can.

Once you've discussed it at length, the plan forms.

"I'll have a talk with Marya. Let her know what to feed her friend. Then I'll pen a missive to my would need paramour. Once we have a date and time for the meeting, you'll need to have Star Cobra ready to pounce "
Aug 21, 2024 6:28 am
Hural considers the concerns of Lady Sina and looks ahead, staring into the distance as his eyes roll up into his head.

"I'll keep tabs on him and keep him honest," Rook interjects, patting his knife. "And I'll let Star Cobra know once we decide on when the pouncing is to occur."
Aug 24, 2024 3:39 pm
She knows most games of politics involve playing against an uncertain hand. "I'll not fully commit to it then. Truthfully, my uncertainty may encourage Bakhtier to go to additional lengths to convince me."

She considers her table and then stands. "We have a plan. We have resources in place. I will visit the site of the bazaar, to ensure that's moving along. The last piece in my plan is to obtain a spice harvester, but that would require great care."
Aug 25, 2024 7:00 am
"There is still the man, Daniil, who operates a black market spice harvester, covered by the Builder's Guild. Once we cement this deal with them for their property in the bazaar, perhaps that could be an avenue to look into. They provide a cut to the builder's guild for their concealment of the operation, but we could look to approach him to see if a deal could be worked out. A man we met, Bafat, used to work for Daniil but now is bound to Marcus. He may be useful in this regard."
Aug 25, 2024 4:45 pm
Marcus nods at the mention of Bafat.
Aug 26, 2024 11:25 pm
She takes a note on that. "Perfect. We're in business. Let's get moving on this Bakhtier party. I'll return to the mansion and let you know when he sets up the engagement date."
Aug 27, 2024 7:30 am
Hural nods and looks to the others, "We should take advantage of the evening and get some rest. We don't know how quickly Bakhtier will respond. In the morning, perhaps we should get the message to Star Cobra, to get his men ready."
Aug 28, 2024 4:32 pm
Rook nods, agreeing with Hural. "Yes, we should sleep. I want to be as sharp as possible for this. We can reconvene when we hear from the lady Sina."
Aug 28, 2024 8:07 pm
Marcus nods in agreement.
Aug 29, 2024 1:15 am
Amid the shifting sands of the Arrakeen desert, the two minor houses clashed with a ferocity that belied their status. The sky burned a deep ochre as the sun began its descent, casting long shadows over the battlefield. House Heslin’s ornithopters screamed overhead, their sleek forms cutting through the air as they rained down lasgun fire on the forces of House Bakhtier. The ground troops, clad in stillsuits that barely contained the heat, darted between rocky outcrops and crumbling dunes, the spice-laden air thick with the scent of blood and sweat. Explosions erupted sporadically, sending plumes of dust into the sky as each side struggled for dominance over this barren expanse of land.

Within the chaos, a small band of retainers from House Heslin huddled behind a shattered sandcrawler, their faces smeared with grit. Among them, Lieutenant Oris surveyed the battlefield through a cracked visorscreen, barking orders to his men as they returned fire. To his left, a young soldier, barely out of his teens, clutched his rifle with trembling hands, his eyes wide with fear. "Hold your ground!" Oris shouted above the din, knowing full well that their position was precarious. Just as another volley of fire tore through the air, a distant rumble, far deeper than the sounds of combat, reverberated through the ground—a subtle warning that the battle was not their only concern.

On the opposite ridge, Commander Viro of House Bakhtier watched the scene unfold with a grim satisfaction. Her forces had the upper hand, but she knew better than to underestimate the desperation of cornered foes. With a sharp gesture, she signaled her second-in-command to prepare the next wave of attack. But even as she did, a sudden, unnatural stillness fell over the battlefield. Both sides hesitated, ears attuned to the growing tremor beneath them. The sand began to shift, vibrating ominously—a reminder that on Arrakis, the greatest danger could come from beneath. In that fleeting moment of shared terror, enemy lines blurred, and all eyes turned toward the horizon, where the first hints of a colossal sandworm breach began to disrupt the dunes.
Things have not gone according to plan. Let's take turns explaining what happened to get us to this point. Let's start with @C1nder, describing the events prior to the battle. Then, @Windyridge please elaborate on what he posts, and how this became a battle. Lastly @ForeverDed tell us how House Heslin will plan to get out of this. Then, we will play the scene out.
Aug 30, 2024 1:36 am
They got the response a day and a half later, a message from House Bakhtier that their liege would meet with them on the morrow, while insisting on the location: a stretch of desert outside the city, tucked behind large, rocky ridge. It was a precarious location for such a meeting, one that would present little in the form of hiding places for any kind of ambush.

Star Cobra was quick to respond and rallied his men, with House Heslin troops blending among their numbers. These forces went out ahead of the meeting, but were unable to secure a safe point of hiding close enough, waiting instead in reserve while Heslin Ornithopters waited on call as well.

When Hural, Marcus, and Rook arrived at the designated meeting point, it became quickly clear House Bakthier had other intentions.
Aug 31, 2024 1:55 pm
Rook shook his head upon learning of the meeting venue, insisting that it was too risky. Nevertheless, his warning went unheeded and suddenly they found themselves embroiled in chaos.

"We've been betrayed." But soon it was apparent that they were not only fighting on one front but two, for there was no mistaking the rumbling vibration underneath them.

"Sandworm!" Rook shouts over the din. "This could be the break we need if we can survive it! Can we somehow send it toward House Bakhtier?"
Sep 4, 2024 10:05 pm
The battle was going poorly. Marcus thought for sure that they'd have an advantage going in, but House Bakhtier had quickly adjusted, surely indicating a spy within House Heslin or Star Cobra's outfit. Given the recent discovery of one mole in his organization, it seemed likely that there was another. But they would worry about that later, assuming they survived.

And that assumption was looking less likely now that a worm had announced its imminent arrival.

Unless…

Rook gave him an idea.

"We need to get some thumpers close to Bakhtier's forces." Marcus surveyed the terrain. "If we can't carry them in, the 'thopters are going to have to put them on a ten-second delay and drop them. The rest of us will have to high tail it back up the ridge, keeping the crawler between us and Bakhtier's forces.

"But what would work better is if we could activate a shield and drop it on them. Worms may be attracted to sound but they hate the harmonics produced by shields."

[ +- ] And now a word from lisan al gaib
As you, the core members of House Heslin's intelligence apparatus confer, the battle rages overhead and all around you. You have a few options to enact Marcus' plan.

In Dune, warfare is treated much in the same way as regular conflict: you use Checks to utilize Assets, only in this case, the Assets might be whole squadrons. I've copied those actions above. Let's have each of you describe an action that you use to enact Marcus' plan, then make a D3 roll to accomplish that.

Your Assets include:
-Ornithopter force
-Infantry
-Mercenary Outfit (i.e., Star Cobra)
-House Bakhtier traitor
-player's choice (something I've not thought of)

Then make an appropriate roll for your character influencing that action. If you get all 3 successes or more, then you succeed as planned. 2 successes, and something will complicate the next action. 1 success or less and there will be a loss of the Asset to House Heslin.

The third action will be the one that plants the thumpers and possibly a shield generator in the midst of the Bakhtier command center, but the first two are your choices to enact the plan

Rook is going to ask that the thopters drop thumpers on a time delay per Marcus, and he wants to accompany one of them in a thopter. So his position would be with the squadron. I am making a case for using his battle focus of dirty fighting since the thumper dropping is an improvised weapon from above. This being a last-minute plan makes a case for using Faith.

The battle goes badly. It starts off well, with the thumpers drawing the worm toward the House Bakhtier's control post. Unfortunately it takes a bit too long and their battle leader is able to drive the Heslin infantry right into the path with a series of explosions. Star Cobras mercenary band attempt to rally the infantry but a pivotal missile strikes them ending the mercenary band for good.

In the end, House Heslin's forces are decimated, and House Bakhtier is destroyed by the worm enraged by the thumpers and the warfare waged around it.
I'd like to thank each of you for sticking with this game, despite some inconsistencies in posting. I largely wanted to explore the world of Dune and how PCs might be drawn into the action. I think that the game has had some great moments, brought to life with your characters.

I'm the end though, I'm not sure that I really made it feel like Dune and I'm not sold on the arbitrary Difficulty system that underpins the rules.

I'd like to end it here, but if you want to discuss the game I welcome that.

You do not have permission to post in this thread.
