Koveras leads the way through the streets with back straight. It takes some time pressing through the crowds of the Lower City, but eventually they pass into the Upper City.

It's a marked difference in atmosphere. On these streets there are fewer crowds, and more small groups of finely-dressed men and women. The guards here have armor that's polished and blemish-free. There are no hawkers or beggars, and the place smells considerably better.

Before long they come to a wide plaza with temples on every side. They're not equal in size, however. Most of the houses of worship are small, with Tymora and Ilmater among the smallest. Oghma and Deneir are reasonably-sized, both filled with libraries of respectable size and content. Helm and Lathander of course have monumental edifices here, but the largest belongs to Gond, the Gearsmith. The enormous building, big enough to dwarf a large warehouse, is divided into two: the High House of Wonders being the temple proper, and the other being the Hall of Wonders, a museum of invention and ingenuity.

Koveras turns to the group, beefy arms folded tight across his chest. "Well, we're here."

"Oh, Sheemish would have loved this!" Stella remarks, mouth agape at the Hall of Wonders. Her smiles fades when she sees the Temple of Ilmater.

She looks down and flips open her tome. "Let's see...find a place for Tenya...then ask about Candlekeep research inquiries at the Temple of Oghma or the Temple of Deneir...then maybe find Ramazith to ask about the Shadowfell...no wait, such a wizard wouldn't be in the Temple District..." She scratches a few notes.

"Watching Woman guide us for this girl's sake..." Stella whispers in druidic, tracing a tiny constellation on the page. She looks around trying to figure out where an orphan might be watched over...and one that possibly has powers of the storm and sea at that.

Aiwë tucked her arm into Stella's. "Let's start with Ilmater. They'll have to know where to go."
Mar 3, 2024 6:59 am
Stella grimaces slightly, pulling her lips to one side.

Papa was an aasimar and temporary avatar of Ilmater, but he always...adamant about the teachings. They were how Zenithral and Ilmater were able to break her grandmother Ilmadia out of a devil's pact, and, in part, how he had convinced Zariel the fallen angel to help save the Icewind Dale from utter destruction. Stella could understand helping those who can't help themselves, even at risk to oneself, but taking on pain, one-for-one...It didn't make sense. How could pain be some finite resource? It was a construct of the mind, a signal of something wrong with the body...or spirit. What was the point of taking someone's burden or pain instead of working to just eliminate it?

But Aiwë was right, Stella thinks, following her lead. The Ilmatari would likely know who could care for Tenya.
Mar 3, 2024 3:04 pm
"Have you ever spent much time with the Ilmatari, Aldous?" Aiwë pats Stella's arm as they walk. Having trouble with Ilmater was as deep in her family's blood as Ilmater himself. "Stella's father and grandmother are Ilmatari Aasimar." She looks at Stella. "I wonder if any of them know Ilmadia. She's travelled quite a bit."
Mar 4, 2024 1:09 am
Aldous gives a small shake of his head. "I haven't, unfortunately. Ilmater's always seemed a little too serious for my religious tastes... But I'm always open to learning something new!"
Mar 4, 2024 1:22 am
The Temple of Ilmater is made up of a single circular room of white marble. In the center, between a pair of columns painted crimson red, a white-robed priestess stands at a lectern.

The priestess looks up and smiles. The aged wrinkles around her eyes remind Stella of her great-grandmother Saki. "Welcome to the House of Our Martyred Father. Please, how may I be of service today?"

(Religion: Stella has heard at some point that Umberlee is worshiped by a fair number of Baldurians. Though known by some names that don't seem particularly polite, it's customary for sailors and other sea-goers to give offerings to the Wavemother before embarking on an important voyage. Umberlee's doctrine isn't particularly pleasant, and the goddess seems rather petty, if not outright evil. Still, if she has a place of worship, it doesn't seem to be in this part of the city. Actually, it seems fitting that her temple would be found in the Docks District.)
Mar 4, 2024 1:59 am
"It's so dramatic!" From Aiwë's blissful tone it is a clear compliment. "Their clergy don't just move people through, looking for the most convenient way to fix them, they take the suffering themselves. No one does that unless they really care. Being treated by the Ilmatari is a whole spiritual experience—it makes you feel so worthwhile."

She grins at Aldous, abruptly changing tones. "For what it's worth, Auntie Madia and Uncle Zen can be kind of heavy, but they are not serious."

The party explains Tenya's plight.

The Ilmatari priestess kneels down in front of the little girl and takes a deep breath, eyes full of empathy. "Don't worry, Tenya. We'll find a good home for you."

The priestess looks up at the group. "From what you've told me and as far as I can determine, I think she might be an aasimar of Umberlee."

(Insight: While her expression is serene, her voice carries concern. This faithful follower of a goodly and merciful deity is conflicted. Does Tenya belong with the Wavesisters of Umberlee? Or would she have a better life as far from adherents of the evil Sea Queen as possible?)
Mar 5, 2024 3:36 pm
Aiwë's mouth falls open slightly. "Oh." She chews her lip. "She can't be kept from Umberlee, but to let people like that raise her... Hey, Stella. Do you think your grandma would have advice? She's different, of course, but I see potential similarities in the way these stories stretch out...""
Mar 5, 2024 6:40 pm
"Hmm?" Stella turns distractedly to the Aiwë, then to the priestess, and back to Aiwë. "Ilmadia? Oh...um. I will admit, I'm...not quite following. Neither her aasimar blood nor being raised Ilmatari kept her from making a pact with a devil and having children with one..." she says as if it were a perfectly normal sentence. Stella averts her eyes and tilts her head.

She thinks briefly of Caliope's mother, a Waukeenar cleric, who had an orphanage that raised children from 'street rats' into students...surely that impacted who they became...didn't it? Caliope was one of them, after all.

"I suppose without Papa, though, she never would have been convinced she could be freed...nor would she have been able to survive the purging radiance it took for Ilmatar to break her free..."

She looks at Ida and down at Tenya. Tenya...would likely benefit much more from being cared for by someone willing to understand her pain much more than someone who can only understand her powers... She quints and looks back at Aiwë. "Is that what you mean?"
Mar 5, 2024 6:49 pm
"Temple of Oghma...Temple of Deneir..." With a few thick envelopes in hand, Stella searches the Temple District with anyone else who wants to join her. "Excuse me!" she asks the occasional passersby for directions then heads to the nearest one of the two temples when she finds where they might be, trying to find whether either of them have connections to Candlekeep and whether they accept research commissions.

"Yes!" Aiwë grins. "Its different, of course, but Ilmadia will understand what it's like to have powers and purpose thrust upon her without understanding or feeling close to the god involved, and she understands the pain of loss." Aiwë looks at the girl.

"However her life goes, she will do better if those around her understand her pain, rather than simply try to erase it. That's what Ilmater and your family have taught me, anyway."

She turns to Ida. "What would Lathander say?"

One of the questioned passersby is a well-dressed gnomish fellow with a fashionable cane. He turns about quickly to answer Stella's inquiry, poking her leg with the tip of his cane. "Tiax cares nothing for such false idols! You'd do best to change your foolish ways and worship the One and True Ruler of the Universe: Tiax!"
Mar 5, 2024 7:09 pm
"Oh! Well." She hops a step away and takes stock of the gnome's fine appearance. "I don't worship them, or any god really; I just need someone who can fulfil research inquiries to Candlekeep...But who is Tiax?" she squints inquisitively.
Mar 5, 2024 7:10 pm
"Mind that cane," Aiwë answers with a smile that would be pleasant if not for the amount of teeth and tusk in it.
Mar 5, 2024 7:19 pm
"Have you not just been enlightened?" the gnome's face reddens in anger. "Tiax the Grand will never reward such shameful ignorance! Tiax will place a mark of shame upon your forehead!"

The gnome takes his cane in both hands in a dramatic windup that might be comical if not for the mad gleam in his eye...
Mar 5, 2024 7:21 pm
Aiwë puts herself between Stella and the gnome and prepares to take the blow on her bare arm. With a wicked look in her eye, she hopes it welts.

Stella blinks a few times. Wasn't it the Ilmatari who thrust that relentless pressure and expectation upon Ilmadia in the first place? It was what she had frequently felt from Papa. It seemed fairly hypocritical.

She didn't want to argue, however. Most anything would probably be better than the followers of some self-serving sea god, and Saki, Ilmadia, and Papa were still all exceptional people, flaws and all.

Stella looks to Tenya, and then to Ida, who had done the most so far to care for Tenya. Her opinion probably held the most weight. Tenya herself probably deserved a say as well.

Dieter perks up at the prospect of imminent violence, Aiwë seems to be willing to take the blow. He doesn’t know whether to stop the half orc. She is a lady but she’s also a warrior (not that the two are exclusive) and at least in dieter’s mind his superior officer despite her protests.

Dieter moves to grab the stick with his left hand if the gnome swings leaving his right hand open for potential tool use.

"Out of Tiax's way, you half-tusked heathen!"

The gnome swings the cane at Aiwe with all his might - and then is puzzled as his hands leave the makeshift weapon behind, secure in Dieter's grasp.

Emptyhanded, the furious little fellow yells a stream of nonsensical syllables at the trio of adventurers. "YarbydeGOOsifulSNAPPLEGOB!"

The words echo round and round in their minds, growing and fading and interrupting themselves in a maddening fashion. Aiwe resists the strange effect easily, and Dieter clears it up himself with a blink and a headshake. But Stella finds herself overwhelmed by the cacophony.

Stella goes from being amused to angered, eye-stars shifting orange. "Half-tusked—" Stella grimaces and holds her hands to her ears, shaking slightly. "Snapple gob!" Stella echos the familiar phrase, almost pleasantly surprised by it whilst being sickened and nauseated by the echos of it in her mind.

She steps away, letting Aiwë and Dieter handle the crazed gnome, hoping the spell fades soon as she looks around or more evidence of a temple of Oghma or Deneir.

Given the gnome's commotion, it doesn't take long for guards to arrive. "Again, Tiax? We might just lock you up for good this time..."

"No!" Tiax cries. "There is no cell that can hold Great Tiax! Tiax will rule all! 'Tis destined to be so!"

As the guards hoist the crazed gnome away, Stella feels the nefarious magic affecting her fade, and within a minute or so she feels normal again. Whatever magic this 'Tiax' brought to bear, it doesn't seem to pose any danger.

With that situation handled, Stella and the rest easily locate the Temple of Oghma. The place seems much more akin to a library than a proper temple, and the smell of hundreds of old books and papers is reminiscent of Candlekeep. Several scribe-priests immediately offer assistance.
OOC:
We don't have to roleplay this out, but go ahead and make some sort of appropriate Intelligence check, with advantage!

"'Snapple gob' and 'tis'...You'd almost think he was raised a Melerelel," Stella grins sheepishly at Aiwë. "I know gnomes tend to be passionate, but I don't think even Maverick was that...troubled..." she says, watching the guards escort the gnome away. Maverick had been one of their parents' former adventuring companions. 'Tiax'...almost sounded like 'Rastix', another gnome their parents traveled with.

She shrugs and continues her search.
...
Stella breaths in the smell of books, inks, and parchment and sighs contentedly.

She explains to the scribes her desire to commission research inquiries, preferably with Candlekeep. She presents a few envelopes with letters and questions regarding (1) prophecies by Alaundo regarding Gruumsh and Bhaal and possible relations between them, and (2) knowledge about the Shadowfell that could explain Deiters' and Ida's experiences (which she elaborates on in the letters).

The scholar-priests of Oghma indeed have rotating pilgrimages to Candlekeep in search of knowledge, and assure Stella that her letters will be included in the next such visit - for a reasonable donation to the temple's coffers, of course (at least 20 gp).

Stella donates 25 gold pieces and thanks them for their time.

As a last stop while in the Temple District, they head to Lathander's Temple, at Ida's suggestion, as a place to dispose of Davaeorn's robes and spellbook.
OOC:
Reward according to GM:
- Robe of the Evil Archmagi for 11,300 gp.
- Davaeorn's Spellbook for 2,000 gp.
Part of Stella wants to find someone to ask about her visions, but ultimately she shies away from it when everyone else seems ready to head to the Silvershield estate.
