As the first rays of dawn painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, New York City stirred to life with the energy of a new week. In the heart of Manhattan, the cityscape bustled with activity as the morning rush began.

On bustling sidewalks, a sea of commuters streamed out of subway stations and flooded the streets, their determined strides reflecting the urgency of Monday morning. Briefcases in hand and coffee cups in tow, they navigated the maze of skyscrapers with practiced efficiency, each person with their own destination and purpose.

In the Financial District, suited professionals hurried towards gleaming office towers, their minds already buzzing with meetings and deadlines. Traders glanced at their smartphones, tracking market trends, while analysts crunched numbers in their heads, preparing for the day's trading.

In Midtown, creative minds converged in sleek studio spaces and design firms, their imaginations ignited by the promise of new projects. Fashionistas clad in chic attire dashed to runway shows and photo shoots, their designs poised to captivate the world.

Meanwhile, in the bustling kitchens of restaurants and cafes, chefs and baristas orchestrated a symphony of flavors, preparing gourmet delights and artisanal brews to fuel the city's workforce. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the scent of sizzling bacon, enticing passersby to indulge in a morning treat.

Amidst the chaos, street performers entertained the crowds with music and dance, their lively performances adding a touch of magic to the urban landscape. Tourists marveled at iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and Times Square, capturing memories with every click of their cameras.

As the sun climbed higher in the sky, the heartbeat of New York City grew stronger, pulsing with the rhythm of countless lives intertwined in the fabric of the metropolis. And amidst the chaos and cacophony, the city's spirit remained unyielding, a testament to the resilience and vitality of the Big Apple on a bustling Monday morning.

"You should probably go now," Charlie says quietly. He had woken up an hour ago, following his standard routine: toilet, exercise, shower, brush teeth, shave, exfoliate, moisturize, dress. His jacket still hangs in the closet - he still has time, another hour before he plans to be in the office. It is rare one of his dates wakes up before he starts these conversations. The sleeping form of the brunette stirs gently. "Time to wake up," he says, a little louder but still pleasant enough, "You'll need to leave soon."

The woman turns, opening her eyes from the bed and yawns. "Good morning to you, too," she says groggily. Charlie sits on the bed next to her and leans down, giving her a kiss. "Mmm," she intones and smiles back, "What time is it?"

He doesn't need to check. "7:55am," Charlie says.

She sits up and stretches. Her long hair cascades down her back, messy but beautiful. She smells of morning. "Can I take a shower?" she asks.

He frowns. "It's best you don't," he answers, "I have to get to work."

The look on her face turns mildly sour at this. "Okay then. I guess there's no time for breakfast?"

He shakes his head. "Your things are in the chair," he says, gesturing to the large reading chair in the nearby corner. Her clothes are neatly folded, her shoes tucked just underneath between the legs of the chair with equal space to their left and right.

She gets the message and sighs, removing her naked form from the bed and donning her attire. "I never got your number..." she says, the question lingering, even if he couldn't read her intentions. She wasn't mad at him yet.

"I'm sorry," he says, "maybe if we see each other again." There it is, the anger. He didn't delight in this, but it was usually the same as they realized this was always going to be a one-time thing.

"Fine," she says coldly. She gathers the rest of her things and slips on her shoes.

He walks to his dresser and opens the drawer. Sitting to the side is a small box with a couple dozen cards in it. He pulls one out and walks her to the door. "There's a cafe across 3rd Ave, Semicolon. Great cappuccinos and croissants. Here," he hands her the card, bearing the name of the cafe, $20 written neatly on the back corner. Confusion, anger, acceptance.

She takes it and walks out the door. "Asshole," she mumbles quietly as she leaves.

Charlie sighs. Sometimes it goes better than this, sometimes worse. He makes his bed, smoothing the wrinkles and fluffing the pillows so that it doesn't look slept-in. He tidy's up for a few minutes then dons his jacket and gathers his briefcase before leaving as well.

In the lobby he gets a copy of the newspaper and sits in the lounge, reading it over for a few before taking it with him and hailing cab to take him to Skadden. When he arrives, he heads up to his floor, slipping off the elevator at 8:55am, ready for the day to begin.

The scene at Skadden appeared to be business as usual, with a flurry of activity as employees, particularly interns and newcomers, hustled about their tasks. Charlie couldn't help but notice that some of them seemed to be wearing the same attire as they had on Friday, suggesting a weekend spent at the office. He couldn't shake the feeling that many of them wouldn't last, while others would thrive and ascend to success. It was clear that management had little concern for turnover; they were focused on separating the wheat from the chaff, or as the old boys' club would say, the men from the boys.

Inside his office, however, Charlie sensed something unusual. A man sat at his desk, his back turned to Charlie as he gazed out the window. Slowly, he turned to face Charlie, his expression inscrutable. It was Edward Hall, the new head of Charlie's division, known for his ruthlessness and handling of sensitive matters. When something landed on Edward's desk, it usually meant trouble.

"Charlie... Bevin," Edward greeted him, his gaze sweeping over Charlie. "What the hell are you doing? Sit, my man. We need to talk... and close the door."

As Charlie took a seat, Edward crossed his hands on the desk, his tone commanding. "You're mine now, it seems. You're on my team... the A team, THE team, the major league, bro."

Edward paused, his expression growing serious. "I've reviewed the reports from your predecessor and some of your cases... It's garbage. Those are rookie cases. You need to aim higher in the world."

His eyes narrowed as he reached for a red file on the desk. "Take it. This is a delicate matter. I need to fly to London tomorrow, and I need you to cover for me. Share ownership transfers, over two hundred corporate entities, shell companies, hush-hush accounts in panama and other shit countries."

"But it's for Bettencourt," Edward continued. "The old man is practically a vegetable now, and we've been ordered by the court to execute the will. Good news for you, everything is in order, and even the state court validated the will. Skadden has been preparing for this for ten years, so don't mess it up, boy."

As Edward rose from his chair, he continue talking. " You have a meeting starting 1 pm with Bettencourt's financial team and the notary. But before that there are a dozen NDAs you need to sign on top of the folder. Give it to my executive assistant; she'll take care of it."

"And a word of advice," Edward added. "Don't delve too deeply into the financial details. Your job is to transfer the assets, not to ask questions. Do this well, and there might be a bright future for you with me. Otherwise... well, you know the drill. It's going to take several months to finish all this, so have fun. I will keep my eyes on you. "

" The beneficiary will show up this afternoon while you work with the financial team, for some signatures. " He is talking about Mackenzie Bettencourt, Charlies and most of the city knows her. " Do you have a thing for rich girl? If yes you should masturbate before seeing her... That will help for thinking straight. I was young too, i understand. But like i said... don't fuck it up, and don't shit where you eat. "
Mar 10, 2024 9:01 pm
Charlie is surprised but doesn't let it show on his face. He nods and smiles at the man - his new boss - and moves to take a seat at the man's invitation. "Mr. Hall," he says, "it's nice to meet you face-to-face, sir."

He listens and nods at the appropriate times. It wouldn't do to interrupt and this man didn't leave much time for getting a word in edge-wise.

"Rich girls, sir? Only the pretty ones, but good advice. I'll be prepared for Ms. Bettencourt's arrival.

"Thank you sir. This is...big. I appreciate the opportunity and assure you I am up to the task. I won't let you down."
He pauses a moment, "I'll start right away, and will ensure this assignment takes priority over my others. May I bill a few extra hours? I can handle the case load, but I want to make sure I'm giving everything the right amount of care."

As Charlie listens attentively, Mr. Hall continues with his briefing, noting Charlie's nods of understanding. He appreciates Charlie's professionalism in not interrupting, a trait he values in his employees.

He nods in acknowledgment of Charlie's assurance. "Good to hear, Charlie. We're counting on you for this one."

Considering Charlie's request to prioritize the assignment, Mr. Hall deliberates for a moment before responding. "Of course, Charlie. Prioritize this case as needed, and bill the extra hours accordingly. Get those rookies numbers up! We need to ensure everything is handled with the utmost care," he affirms, emphasizing the importance of thoroughness in their work.

- " You going to be busy, i found you the first member of your team. Avery Sinclair. She is not there to suck your... so don't do anything i wouldn't... hummm bad example... nevermind. Just don't mix work and pleasure bro. " Charlie point out through the office window toward the office space and he sees the back of a new lady setting herself up. - " She is from Berkley and finished the bar exam a few months ago. We needed more diversity on the floor. Have her tag along, maybe she can be useful. Fire her if not. "

"Thank you, sir," Charlie says with a coy smile. He exudes confidence, but is a little taken aback at the mention of leading a team. He knew the work would be grueling, but he had assumed he was expected to *part* of that team, not leading it. "Avery Sinclair..." he says, thinking, "Right, I met her briefly. She seems sharp - I'll find out how true that is. And don't worry - as you said, don't shit where you eat. Is there anything else I need to know, Mr. Hall?" Charlie is eager to get started. Everything was coming up aces for him today, he needed to make sure it stays that way.

"That's all for now. You can text me if things go south, but I need you to handle this. It's not helpful if I have to intervene every time," he states firmly as he heads towards the exit. "I've left something in your drawer for when things get rough. You'll need it," he adds with a smirk before leaving the office.

In the drawer, he discovers a bottle of aged bourbon whiskey, a comforting gesture for the challenges that lie ahead. There's a label written by hand. For emergencies, open it!

Charlie smirks at the bourbon. "Nice," he says aloud. He starts do a quick perusal of the summary file on his desk. This was going to be messy, but he liked that - he's at his best when fixing messes and untangling all the knots. He sets a timer he keeps on his desk for fifteen minutes, getting a quick lay of the land. When the timer goes off, he picks up the file - along with the NDAs stacked on top, and head out to find Avery - he'll need to get her on line quick.

Avery exudes timeless elegance in her ensemble, donning a crisp blue blouse neatly fastened up to the collar, leaving only the last button undone for a touch of subtle allure. Layered over her blouse is a sleek dark navy blazer, exuding sophistication and professionalism. Her skirt, with its conservative length just a few inches above the knee, adds a refined touch to her classic look.

While her attire may not be extravagantly priced, it radiates sophistication and style, embodying understated luxury. Physically, Avery possesses a statuesque figure, her tall, slender frame accentuated by long, athletic legs that speak to her dedication to fitness. Her narrow, delicate shoulders complement her well-balanced proportions, while her subtle curves are elegantly concealed beneath the tailored lines of her jacket.

With long, straight hair cascading gracefully around her shoulders, Avery's facial features are strikingly refined and feminine. Her clear complexion and delicate features exude a timeless beauty, while her luscious lips and piercing, determined eyes add a captivating allure to her presence. In every aspect, Avery embodies a sense of grace and sophistication that sets her apart in any setting.

Amidst a sea of beautiful women in the office, Avery stands out effortlessly, her presence infused with a sense of grace and cleverness that leaves a lasting impression on all who encounter her.

- "Good morning, I'm Avery Sinclair. Please, call me Avery. Looking forward to getting started. " She extends her hand for a handshake, her expression adorned with a subtle smile that barely reaches her eyes. Avery's demeanor suggests a reserved nature, someone who keeps her emotions close to the vest, preferring to maintain a professional façade in any situation.
Mar 12, 2024 8:33 pm
"Avery, nice to meet you. Charlie Bevin." He holds his hand out as a professional courtesy. She really is striking, which won't help him focus, but with his head in the game it shouldn't hinder him much either. "Glad to hear you're ready - we'll need to get working on this right away. You and I should be able to handle the initial review and get things rolling today. I have some NDA's to sign, perhaps you can look over the file in my office while I take care of those? We have a meeting with the client's representatives at 1pm, so we have some time, but not a lot of it. I assume you can manage the case load? This will need to take priority, at least until after we meet with Ms. Bettencourt later."

Avery listens attentively, her expression professional and composed. "I signed my copy of the NDAs this morning," she interjects, ensuring that the necessary confidentiality agreements are in place.

"I believe I'm fully committed to this case," she continues, her tone earnest. "It's exhilarating to be assigned to such a significant account. Today marks my first day; I relocated from California just this past Friday. Please bear with me as I familiarize myself with the details this week."

"We've received a service notice indicating that a team of legal writers has been booked for you by Mr. Hall for the next few months," Avery informs him, her brows furrowing slightly in curiosity. "Though the specifics are unclear, it seems to be tied to substantial work we need to do."

"Additionally," she adds, her voice steady, "members of Ms. Bettencourt's security team and her personal secretary have already arrived. You likely haven't had the chance to check your latest messages. The office hostesses have welcomed them in guest salon G, where they're currently enjoying coffee. They expressed a desire to inspect the premises and review the meeting room ahead of scheduled meetings."

- " What should i focus on first? Learning about the case or... " She seems hesitant, not sure how to deal with this.
Mar 13, 2024 5:22 am
Charlie smiles, pensive for just a moment. "Of course, Avery. New York's a big city - there's a lot for you to acclimate to from that alone, but I'm happy to her of your commitment to the case. Nice job getting on top of the NDAs.

Get me a copy of the service notice, if you may. I'm sure there's a reason Mr. Hall brought them on board. I know the building better, I'll meet with Ms Betterncourt's team and make sure they have what they need. In the meantime, yes, please familiarize yourself with the case - focus on what we'll need for the meeting with the financial team this afternoon. I'll expect a summary to catch me up when I return. Where will I find you?"

Avery didn't display any overt signs of stress or pressure, but he could sense her relief that everything was in order, and they were now transitioning into work mode. As she turned around to grab an iPad on her desk, he couldn't help but notice her impressive bum, a testament to her dedication to fitness. She handed him the tablet.
"It's the service notices on screen confirming they're ready whenever we are," she explained.

"Can I set up in your office space temporary? All the conference rooms are booked on this floor. It would be easier to locate me there," she said with a serious tone. Avery's desk was situated in the open office area, like many others, but inside Charlie's office, there is a table with four chairs.

"Just in case, if I'm in the vault getting documents, you can add my corporate phone number and text me anytime," she added.

Meanwhile having them both standing and chatting gets a bit of random reactions on the floor from bystanders.

- " ... not loosing time... i love it... young and effective... great... that's going to be fun... (Avery) "
- " ... Oh sh*t that black girl has amazing legs ... "
- " ... She must be already sucking up to him ... "
- " ... Poor things, Betterncourt is going to roll over them ... "
- " ... How the hell he got this account, not fair... "
- " ... They hire them prettier and prettier... I'd play with those boobs... "
- " ... Charlie look great today... Why the new girl got to work with him... "
Mar 14, 2024 12:28 am
Charlie quietly takes the ipad and looks over the service notices. He quickly forwards them to his own corporate email account so he has copies.

"Yes, of course - please be my guest," he says with a smile. He exchanges numbers with her. "Mine, too, in case you need to reach me about the case."

Charlie senses the thoughts of their colleagues and glances around the room casually, wondering who paired to which thoughts...particularly the last one. Of course, it was difficult to tell in this sort of open environment, but this was one reason it was nice to have an office, to get away from the mental noise.

"I don't expect this to take long, I'll find you soon," he says to Avery before letting her back into his office and going to the Guest room to find Bettencourt's team.

The last random thought belonged to Xiao Wei Ling, though she goes by the simpler moniker, Alice Ling. Despite her complicated name, Alice is a lawyer in her early 30s. However, she struggles with courtroom appearances due to stress-induced meltdowns, leaving her unable to lead cases. Her introverted nature often prompts others to question her choice of profession. Despite this, she has managed to keep her job thanks to her exceptional research skills and unwavering dedication. He heard that Alice is severely underpaid, but because she doesn't complain and is considered cheap labor, she manages to survive.

Charlie's presence often triggers stray thoughts from the tiny asian about his appearance, causing Alice to break into a nervous sweat whenever he attempts to engage her in conversation.

As Charlie approaches, Alice feels the urge to disappear under her desk. "Oh, hi... Good... Morning?" she stammers awkwardly, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "Um... yes, I'm busy, I mean... I'm sure if you ask Robert for permission, I can free up," she adds quickly, referring to her manager who is somewhat on the same level as Charlie at the moment. Robert is known to be demanding and often makes her work like a dog. "It would be easier if you just send him a message on the internal chat," she suggests, hoping to avoid any further interaction.

Alice's physique is unremarkable; she is small and skinny like most Chinese Americans. But her breasts are rounded like apples, appearing firm, though many girls use pads in their bras to achieve such a look. Her hands are tiny and appear soft, and her round face is rather cute. While there may be thousands of more beautiful Asians in the city, her personality is pure and kind. However, she is often considered too calm and reserved for most people's taste.

That would... be great... to move away from Robert, that pervert...

Alice quickly rises from her desk, accidentally hitting her tiny knee on the corner of the drawers and letting out a brief word in Chinese that sounds like "ouch." "Oh... thank you, thank you so much. I will, of course, do well," she says with a surprising beautiful smile, revealing perfect white teeth and pink lips. Maybe she does have some charms after all, though certainly not at the same level as Avery, who possesses the full package of curves.

Alice is wearing a beige suit, her skirt is conservative almost covering her knees.

Her smile fades, and she becomes nervous when he mentions that Robert is a pervert and whispers. "Who told you...? I kept my mouth shut as I was told, I swear," she insists, her tone fraught with anxiety.

Giggling nervously and adopting a more professional demeanor, she asks, "Where... do we start?" Her face flushes pink like a rose, and droplets of sweat begin to form on her temples.

Oh lord... what was this boom.

" May I ask who is the client? Is it not better for me to be brief first before meeting them? " She suggests, her petite frame struggling to keep pace with Charlie's longer strides. "Oh, thank you," she blushes, nearly stumbling over a nonexistent wrinkle in the carpet. "Oops... I'm sorry," she apologizes, glancing back to see what tripped her before hurrying to catch up. "RESEARCH! Yes, I can handle that, anything you need. I'm quite adept at navigating the archives downstairs."

Alice's heart races as Bettencourt's name is mentioned, her mind flashing through the countless scenarios that could unfold. "WAIT," she blurts out while grappling his arm inappropriately, her voice far too loud for the hushed atmosphere of the office. Quickly, she lowers her tone to a whisper. "It... it might be a trap. This could go horribly wrong for us if we're not careful. Are you sure we're not being set up as scapegoats? And why aren't any of our partners here to greet them?" Genuine concern etches her delicate features as she speaks. She releases him with a shy expression after realizing her tiny hands are attached to him.

"The previous team that worked on this case... they burned out, some were even fired by ED," she continues, her voice tinged with a mixture of fear and frustration. "Miss Bettencourt shredded them. Her grand-father before destroyed a lot of people in his wake. People talk around me as if I'm invisible, but I hear things. I'll help if you decide to proceed, but... you know, I've been around a long time, and I've seen too many good people get burned in situations like this. Please, don't get caught up in something dangerous." The weight of her words hangs heavy in the air, a silent plea for caution and prudence.

At least... I will die in good company...
Mar 14, 2024 7:44 am
Charlie levels his gaze at her. He's calm, professional, but is clearly weighing her words. "I'm afraid we're already in this, Alice, but it sounds like I was right to bring you in. Keep an eye out for anything that could put the firm, or us, in a bad spot. We'll need to be three steps ahead."

He reaches his hand over and places it on hers as it grips his arm. "It's ok. Now's not the time to worry. Just be observant. The actual meeting is at 1pm. I...I don't know why Ed left or why none of the partners are here for this, but we have a job to do. Listen, I'm not your boss - if at any point you're uncomfortable and want to go back to his unit, just let me know, okay?"
Mar 14, 2024 7:58 am
It didn't take long for Alice to regain her composure after Charlie suggested she return to her previous tasks. "I'm fine," she managed, her voice strained.

In the opulent guest room, only two individuals were present. A tall, imposing man stood, oddly donning dark shades indoors, clad in an impeccably tailored suit. Beside him, an older woman in her late forties, with piercing icy blue eyes, exuded an air of authority that made Alice instinctively take a step back, feeling intimidated.

The woman was the first to address them. "Good morning, I'm Lauren Thompson, Mackenzie Bettencourt's personal secretary," she announced, extending a firm handshake while clutching a briefcase in her other hand.

The man approached slowly, his gaze assessing Charlie and the diminutive Asian girl before them. "Call me Shade. I oversee security for Albert Bettencourt. Miss Bettencourt's safety falls under my purview," he declared, making no mention of the fact that Albert was effectively brain-dead at this point. Shade too carried a briefcase, though noticeably larger than Lauren's.

After the introductions, Shade gets straight to business.

"We would like to begin by inspecting the conference room designated for the meeting, as well as the route Miss Bettencourt will take to reach it," Shade stated. "Additionally, we require the personal files of all relevant staff attending the meeting."

Lauren interjected, her tone slightly more diplomatic. "My colleague is understandably cautious, but I believe that ED conducted his due diligence for the staff. Although I must admit, I had expected someone with more experience," she added, casting a subtle glance at Charlie and after that a long stare in Alice's direction. Lauren could feel the small lady's fear from a thousand miles away.

Alice's gaze dropped, feeling as though time had come to a standstill.

Lauren pressed on. "I understand that Skadden represents the trust, but it's in our mutual interest to ensure proceedings go smoothly... and swiftly. I hope we share the same objective."

"My name is Charlie Bevin, I'll be leading these transfers for the firm. I understand your concern for Miss Bettencourt's safety. I'll be happy to show you to the conference room, then I'll have our head of security show you the intended route."

He looks to Lauren, "Our objectives are the same. It is in everyone's interest to make sure everything resolves properly. Swiftly is ideal, but if I may be so bold, cannot replace the necessity of due diligence. I specialize in fast, efficient, and thorough work. A single leak can cause a ship to sink. We will make sure no such thing befalls the trust.

I assure you, you're in good hands. Ed wouldn't have asked me to take this on if he didn't have utmost faith I could get it done, and I will."

He motions to Alice, "This is Alice Ling, one of the best researchers here at Skadden. My associate, Avery Sinclair is prepping for the meeting as we speak."

He looks to Shade. "If you require our personnel files, I can get them for you. We take security very seriously here, of course. Our clients demand it."

"Ed has been instrumental in facilitating this collaboration, and we certainly hope to create our own partnership with Skadden in future endeavors," Lauren affirmed, her tone conveying the importance of smooth cooperation. "Ms. Bettencourt has expressly instructed us not to engage her own firm, emphasizing the value of this collaborative effort. However, any undue delays may necessitate a reassessment of this approach. We appreciate your understanding in this matter."

Shade nodded in agreement. "Acquiring those files would indeed alleviate any concerns on our end. I've already cleared security downstairs, so we're all set in that regard. I simply require the details of the designated corridor and meeting room to finalize our preparations here."

As Charlie introduced her, Alice stepped forward, her demeanor professional yet reserved. "I'm Ling, Alice. It's a pleasure to be of service," she stated simply before falling into step with the group, ready to assist in any way necessary.

"Excellent. Alice, would you please get Mr. Kastle from security, have him meet us outside the conference room. I'll have him take our guests along the proposed route for Ms. Bettencourt momentarily."

He looks back to Lauren. "I appreciate Ms. Bettencourt's trust in us, but respect your transparency. I too hope this might lead to further partnership between Skadden and her. We hold ourselves in high esteem at Skadden with good reason. I trust you will find yourselves in very capable hands. Please," he steps to the door and holds it open, "this way."

He leads them to the conference room while listening for any surface level thoughts. He's not sure he's fully comfortable with Shade spending any time in the conference room without a member of their own security staff there to monitor. While he would never insinuate a lack of trust in their client, he does not know what Shade carries in that briefcase and it would not be outside the realm of possibility for the man to plant a bug in the room.

Alice smiles warmly, her eyes almost closing in satisfaction. "It was a pleasure to meet both of you. I'll make sure to coordinate with our security team to ensure everything is in order for Miss Bettencourt's arrival," she says confidently, her voice tinged with professionalism. Shade's gaze briefly flickers to her departing figure, but aside from that, the room remains silent when Alice leaves with quick small steps.

"Thank you, Mr. Bevin," Lauren chimes in, her tone polite but reserved. "I appreciate the support." Shade, however, remains impassive, unmoved by Charlie's words about Skadden.

Both Lauren and Shade are not ones to divulge their thoughts freely. It's not a matter of protecting themselves; rather, individuals with strong minds and extensive experience are simply harder to read. Charlie realizes he'll need to work a bit harder to breach their natural mental defenses.

The meeting room allocated for their discussion boasted a stunning view, not the largest but certainly one of the finest in the building. Without seeking permission, Shade got straight to business. Opening his briefcase revealed an array of high-tech gadgets straight out of a spy movie. Among them was a device with a slender antenna, designed to detect surveillance equipment—commonly known as a "bug detector" or "surveillance detector." Its purpose was to uncover hidden surveillance cameras, microphones, GPS trackers, and other covert monitoring devices. Moving methodically around the room, Shade scanned for any signs of surveillance.

Just as Shade was engrossed in his task, Kastle entered the room, accompanied by the somewhat timid Alice. Towering at almost seven feet and nearly 300 pounds, Kastle's imposing physique contrasted with Alice's tiny figure and warm. "Morning... What are you doing, mister...?" Kastle inquired, but Shade remained focused on his work. "Shade, call me Shade," he replied calmly, but continue scanning without looking at the man.

Lauren stepped in to smooth over any potential tension, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the room's security. " We would appreciate your cooperation Mr. Kastle, please call me Lauren. I'm Mackenzie Bettencourt's secretary "

Kastle was about to object to the whole thing when suddenly, the bug detector emitted several sharp beeps, indicating a potential surveillance device near a painting. Without hesitation, Shade removed the painting and examined it closely, revealing a hidden bug encased carefully in the frame. Kastle's surprise was evident, suggesting he was unaware of its presence. - " What do we have here? " Shade examines the tiny device that is not much bigger than a ladybug. Kastle approach to do the same and interject. " I would be damned... it's definitely a bug. "

At various points during the interaction, Charlie gleaned insights from Shade's and other colleagues.

In Shade's mind:
Such a useless monkey (Alice)...probably around to have a go at her in white nights at work.
Alright, let's see if there are any bugs in that room.
Ed might have lost his mind to think that kid will play ball.

In Kastle's thoughts:
What the fuck... a bug in our room? Damn, I'm going to get fired over this.

And from Alice:
Oh wow... is it a bomb?

Charlie observes quietly as Shade goes about his work. He smiles politely at Kastle when the imposing figure enters with Alice. When Shade turns up the device, however, his smile fades immediately. "This is a surprise, I assure you," Charlie says, gritting his teeth, "and intolerable."

He turns to Kastle. "Mr. Kastle, I need you look into this promptly. Security breaches like this, in our building, cannot be ignored. I'll need to report this to the Partners - I suggest you have a plan of action ready when they come to you. This is your purview, but I recommend sweeping all of our shared spaces for similar concerns. This wasn't what I asked you to be here for, however. I still need you to show Shade and Ms. Thompson the planned route for Miss Bettencourt when she arrives. Perhaps a senior member of your staff might assist?"

He looks to Lauren. "Ms. Thompson, I cannot begin to apologize enough for this. There are always risks like this in our business, with the clients we keep, but it is still deeply unnerving."
Mar 16, 2024 6:16 am
Kastle maintains his composure, his years of experience allowing him to handle the situation with ease. "We have protocols in place for this, which include communication up the food chain, and call the cops. " he states calmly, accepting the device from Shade, who responds with a smug grin. Although there's a subtle tension between them, there's also a mutual respect born from their respective roles in security and counterintelligence.

" This was predictable, i know many people who would like to know the details of Bettencourt estate. " Shade said while adjusting his dark glasses.

FBI or someone who has a lot of money like Mackenzie's parents are responsible if you want my guess. Those two would have got into a tragic accident a longtime ago if this was up to me. (Shade)

Shade's remark is met with a raised eyebrow from Lauren. "Yes, it's unacceptable. Didn't you sweep the room beforehand, Mr. Kastle?" she asks, her tone indicating her displeasure.

"We conducted a sweep yesterday, Madam Thompson. Please accept our sincerest apologies. I will investigate this thoroughly," Kastle replies confidently.

Shade interjects, suggesting a change of location. "This place is compromised, Lauren. Can't we move this to the Trust management office, or better yet, to Bettencourt's tower? We can't afford any risks. Our employer will loose hundred of millions if there's a leak. "

Turning to Charlie, Lauren considers the options. "Perhaps relocating would be a suitable apology, Mr. Bevin. Which option would you prefer? I'm confident that the Trust management will understand the security concerns. It's clear that there are spies in your office. Please i would request your delay any communications with the police for now, answering questions in the nature of our meeting is actually what we trying to avoid. "

Meanwhile, Alice, feeling overwhelmed by the sudden mention of spies and surveillance, begins to feel a sense of panic. This new development is a lot for someone who has been buried in the archives for the past decade.

Oh my god... what i got myself into... (Alice)
Mar 16, 2024 7:03 am
"I understand the concern," Charlie says, "however it is mere hours until the meeting. Your own man has cleared this room. It is as you say, this type of thing is to be expected, but it is my thought that no place could be more secure than here, now - particularly with such a small window of time to re-maneuver everything. Would that not post a greater security risk?"

He looks to Shade, "I am sure a man of your skill and with your technology would be confident the room is now free of concerns? You may sweep it further if you'd like, and we can post security outside the door until the meeting - nobody in, or out."

Looking back to Lauren, "Would that be acceptable, Ms. Thompson?"
Mar 16, 2024 7:19 am
" Maybe the room is safe, but the bug presence indicate that a spy knows about this visit and other subterfuge might be in place to disrupt the meeting.

A change in the location and time could be good to confuse their intentions. "
Shade points out with a professional tone.

" I leave it up to you Mr. Bevin, as long you take responsibility for any leak or incident that could happen. " Lauren said with a more serious tone.
Mar 16, 2024 7:29 am
Charlie considers a moment. "I understand. The sensitivity of the matter at hand is important, of course. Ms. Bettencourt is the client, and I feel you would be more confident and comfortable with a change of venue, but as Shade suggests, also a change of time. Where and when would you prefer?"
Mar 16, 2024 7:49 am
Shade nods in agreement. "I think relocating is indeed a wise decision. "

He's green, but at least he is listening to advice... (Shade)

Lauren concurs. "The trust office sounds like a suitable neutral ground, we don't want people to feel intimidated by our main office. I'll inform Miss Bettencourt. Let's plan to meet there at 2 pm. It's only a few blocks from here. Mr. Devin, would you mind contacting the Trust Director to let them know we'll be arriving? It should streamline the process for them so they don't need to come here."

Kestler struggles to conceal his disappointment that their trust in his security has been shaken, but he knows he can't argue after the discovery of a bug under his watch. "I will proceed with my investigation... and postpone calling the cops for now," he concedes reluctantly. " Someone from the high up will probably call you Charlie when I file this. "

Alice wipes the sweat from her forehead, caught in a whirlwind of emotions ranging from fear to excitement as the events unfold before her.

Does it mean i'm going, or only Avery? (Alice)
Mar 16, 2024 7:18 pm
Charlie nods to Kastle. "I would expect nothing short of a diligent investigation," he says regarding the expectation of a call on the matter.

"2pm then," he says to Lauren. "I'll be happy to call the Trust Director, just as soon as our business here is concluded."

"Shade, may I get your email address? I'll send the personnel files you asked for. I will plan for Alice, Avery, and myself to attend." He glances to Alice, "Though your main points of contact will likely be myself and Avery going forward, I want us all to be present for this meeting so we're on the same page."
Mar 17, 2024 1:29 am
"Perhaps a printed copy would be more secure. You never know who might be listening in on electronic communications," Shade remarked with a hint of arrogance. "Welcome to the arena." With that, he closed his briefcase and gave Charlie's shoulder a light tap before leaving.

"Thank you for your assistance, Mr. Bevin. We'll see you there," Lauren added before leaving the room, leaving behind a slightly perturbed Kestler.

Alice appears anxious, her beige jacket now bearing the telltale signs of sweat stains under her armpits.

"It's hard to tell if that went well or not," Alice mused, casting a concerned glance at Charlie.

Why they need my personal information? They are nosy and rude...(Alice)

"A physical copy, sure. We'll bring them with us to the trust office. We'll see you there." He nods at Shade as the man passes by him. "Ms. Thompson, pleasure meeting you."

When they've left, he finds himself alone with Alice and Kastle. He looks to them both. "It could have gone better. Their confidence in Skadden is shaken - I don't like that. Kastle, what is your honest assessment of this? The room was swept yesterday. Has this room been left unlocked since then?"
Mar 17, 2024 3:13 am
Mr. Kastle's expression turned severe once the customers had left, his demeanor shifting to one of neutrality bordering on coldness as he fixed his gaze on Charlie. With his heightened intuition, Charlie could sense the lack of trust emanating from Kastle.

"This is quite a mess," Kastle remarked, his tone reflecting the gravity of the situation. "As for your question, the meeting rooms aren't typically locked. Only personal offices and elevators require keycard access. I'll review the security camera footage of the corridors and cross-reference it with the employee presence log since the last sweep, but that will take some time. I will put some guys on it. "

"It's likely that the bug was planted overnight. Something this sophisticated couldn't have been installed discreetly in just a matter of minutes," he added, his voice tinged with concern.

"One of the employees might be acting as a mole, or worse, it could be a case of partners spying on each other. And in the worst-case scenario, we could be dealing with FBI surveillance," Kastle's inner thoughts reflected on how bad this is. "I might need to start considering alternative employment options while I still can. This place is becoming increasingly shady."

Alice listened attentively, her apprehension growing with each passing moment as she awaited further instructions.

" It's so hot... Did the AC is working? We are in middle of summer... "
Mar 17, 2024 3:20 am
Charlie's demeanor softens. "Mr. Kastle, don't take this personally. I happen to admire the work you do. This sort of thing isn't unheard of. I hope you find something, but if not - for what its worth - I'll speak well of your work here, if asked. Might I ask you something privately really quick?"

Turning to Alice, "Alice, may you meet me in my office. Avery is likely in there. You two should get acquainted."

Kestler's suspicion lingered palpably in the air. "Save your lip service for the customers; you lawyers deserve each other. You'll receive my report on the bug," he curtly remarked before making his exit.

As Kestler left, Alice attempted an awkward smile, her attempt at friendliness overshadowed by the imposing presence of the burly man.

"That would be appreciated. Thank you for allowing me to continue my work on the case," Alice spoke gently, her voice tinged with gratitude.

Returning to Charlie's office, they found Avery already engrossed in her tasks, documents scattered across the desk. Her blazer hung neatly on a hanger behind the door, revealing a blue blouse that didn't quite fit her perfectly. It was too tight around her ample bosom that desperately want to get some air, causing some wrinkles, yet the blouse is loose around her midsection. She probably would need handmade clothes to accommodate those curves, but that expensive for a newgrad. As Charlie and Alice entered, Avery politely rose to greet them.

Introductions were made in a polite manner, but internal musings colored their perceptions:

"Wow, she's incredibly tall and stunning; could easily pass for a fashion model," Alice thought to herself admiringly.

Meanwhile, Avery observed internally as well, "Hmm... I've heard people talking about her after they left. Apparently, she holds two Ph.D.s. She must be clever despite her seemingly clueless expressions."
Mar 17, 2024 3:52 am
"Alright," Charlie says with a smile, "Now that we're all properly introduced, Alice please take a seat." Charlie sits at the table with them. "Avery, Alice will lead most of our research endeavors for the matter, so we can focus on other aspects - word is, she's one of the best Skadden has for such things. What's the low-down on the file so far?"

He pulls out his phone and notices a message from Connor of all people. He quickly texts a reply and places it face-down on the table.

Charlie, Avery, and Alice worked tirelessly, pushing themselves to their limits in preparation for the upcoming meeting. Despite their efforts, they knew they could have used more time to craft a truly convincing presentation. Ed had thrust them into a challenging situation, and it felt like they were being thrown to the wolves, with a room full of seasoned and capable individuals awaiting them.

As the hours passed, the tension in the room mounted. Alice, feeling the heat both figuratively and literally, shed her jacket after an hour of intense work. Her white blouse clung to her skin, damp with sweat, revealing glimpses of her bra underneath. Despite the discomfort, she remained focused, her determination unwavering as she powered through the tasks at hand. Avery couldn't help but notice, a sly grin forming on her lips, though she made no comment.

haha... she is so stressed, i thought she was around doing this since a long time. Nice bra though, sounds expensive. (Avery)

Finally, they reached a point where they were as prepared as they could be. With the meeting looming, they knew they had to move. Given the sweltering heat outside, opting for an Uber with air conditioning seemed like the wisest choice if they wanted to arrive at their destination in a presentable state.

They arrive at the meeting venue without any hiccups, managing to make it on time. As they step inside, they're greeted by a scene that could rival that of a presidential visit. Shade is stationed on the floor where the meeting is taking place, overseeing the proceedings with an air of authority.

Outside and inside the building, an unusually large security force is on high alert, patrolling the premises with a level of vigilance that borders on paranoia. It's clear that security is being taken incredibly seriously, almost as if there's a tangible threat looming over Miss Bettencourt and the proceedings.

As they navigate through the office, they can't help but notice the formidable security presence both inside and outside the building. Guards stand at attention, their eyes scanning the surroundings with unwavering focus, while security personnel patrol the premises with a sense of urgency that suggests they're prepared for any eventuality. It's a stark reminder of the gravity of the situation and the importance of the meeting they're about to attend.

As they step inside the meeting venue, Alice sticks close to Charlie, her nerves palpable as she takes in the heightened security measures. She walks with a sense of unease, her eyes darting around the room as if expecting trouble to jump out from any corner. Despite her apprehension, she finds some solace in Charlie's presence, seeking reassurance in his steady demeanor.

In contrast, Avery exudes an air of calm confidence, completely unfazed by the foreign office environment. She walks with an easy grace, her posture relaxed as if she's simply strolling through a familiar park on a sunny day. Avery's confidence is evident in the way she carries herself, her steps purposeful and assured, radiating an aura of self-assurance that seems to put those around her at ease.

Charlie finds himself face-to-face with the Trust Management team for the first time, a group he's heard about but never had the opportunity to meet in person. As they enter the spacious meeting room, there's a palpable sense of anticipation in the air, mingled with a hint of formality that comes with such high-stakes proceedings. Plenty of time is allocated to introduce each other.

Lauren is present in the room as well.

After the situation at their office, the heightened security doesn't surprise him...particularly with the overheard thought from Shade that Ms. Bettencourt's parents may be keen to disrupt things. They may not be inheriting the company, but they surely have a lot of money to throw around and make trouble.

"Shade, I believe you asked for these?" he hands over the personnel files for himself, Avery, and Alice. Hard copies, as he requested.

They head inside the meeting room, himself with a confidence matching Avery's. He introduces himself to each of the members. He's done enough research to know their faces, recognizing them and calling them by name as he circuits the room.

"It's a pleasure to meet you," he says to each. "My name is Charlie Bevin, these are my colleagues Avery Sinclair and Alice Ling. We look forward to working with you."

Eventually they find their seats, Alice to his right and Avery to his left. He opens his briefcase and places the necessary files before him as they situate and prepare to start the meeting.

The meeting room is abuzz with activity as Charlie, Emily Bennett, Michael Chang, Sarah Thompson, and David Rodriguez gather around the large conference table. They are joined at the table by Alice, Avery and Lauren.

Charlie takes the lead, his confident demeanor reflecting his unusual intelligence in handling complex legal matters.

Emily nods in agreement, her sharp mind already at work. "Indeed, Charlie. Our priority is to ensure that the trust fund assets and corporation ownerships are transfered in a way that aligns with Ms. Bettencourt's financial goals and objectives."

Michael chimes in, his analytical mindset evident as he reviews the latest market trends. "I've conducted a thorough analysis of the current investments in the trusts. You can find all the data in Annex 21," he reports.

Sarah nods approvingly, her expertise in estate planning shining through. "Tax efficiency is crucial," she emphasizes. "We must carefully consider the implications of different trust structures to minimize tax liabilities and maximize wealth preservation as we transfer the assets to Ms. Bettencourt's. "

David interjects, his warm smile putting everyone at ease. "Communication is key," he reminds the team. "I'll ensure that Ms. Bettencourt is kept informed every step of the way, providing her with the peace of mind she deserves."

As the discussion progresses, ideas are exchanged, strategies are refined, and decisions are made with precision and care. Each member of the team plays a vital role in shaping the trust fund to meet Ms. Bettencourt's needs, demonstrating their dedication to delivering excellence in client service.

Throughout the meeting, Alice, though initially shy, begins to contribute to the conversation with precise observations. Her keen eye for detail complements the data presented in the presentation, providing valuable insights that enhance the overall strategy how to proceed as quickly as possible. Despite her reserved demeanor, Alice's contributions do not go unnoticed, earning her some respect.

As the meeting progresses, Avery, with her strong charismatic presence, stands by Charlie's side, providing unwavering support and lending her expertise to the discussion. With her confident demeanor and sharp tongue, she adds depth to the conversation, offering insightful perspectives and strategic recommendations.

Lauren, the dedicated personal secretary to Ms. Bettencourt, exudes an air of professionalism and efficiency as she attends to her duties. With a keen eye for detail and a steadfast commitment to her boss's interests, Lauren ensures that every aspect of Ms. Bettencourt's affairs is managed with precision and care.

As the meeting starts to wind down, Charlie takes a breath and looks to each of those in the room. "We've done good work here today. I believe we have a solid plan in place for the efficient transfer of the Trust to Ms. Bettencourt, while making sure the Trust and Ms. Bettencourt's interests are protected and any liabilities minimized.

"Once we begin to take more direct action, things may get interesting. The last thing we want are key personnel bailing with golden parachutes or hostile actions being conducted across the various board rooms. Might I recommend Skadden prepare injunction requests to halt votes and key personnel changes - it will take a few days to prepare all of them, but my goal would be to submit them in coordination with either the news going public, should it somehow get out, or our first legal filing. They may not stick, but it will at least grind any such actions to a halt while their attorneys file answers and everything works through the courts."

Mackenzie Bettencourt
As the anticipation in the meeting room reaches its peak, the doors swing open, and Mackenzie Bettencourt strides in, exuding an aura of confidence and authority. Her arrival commands attention, even fear, and all eyes turn towards her as she enters the room with purposeful strides. Dressed in a sleek black leather jacket, matching dark trousers, a stylish black beret perched atop her head, and round-shade glasses shielding her eyes. Mackenzie is nothing like a top model, but there's something supernatural in the way she look at you. Making most people feel like she is a goddess looking down at her subjects because she hold so much power.

Following closely behind her is her impeccably dressed male assistant, who carries her briefcase with the utmost care. His tailored suit and composed demeanor complement Mackenzie's presence, adding to the air of professionalism and sophistication that surrounds her.

As Mackenzie takes her seat at the head of the table, her presence fills the room with a sense of authority. With a nod to Lauren, her loyal secretary, and a confident expression, Mackenzie signals that she is ready to begin.

The atmosphere in the room shifts drastically, charged with anxiety as the like of Alice want to disappear under the table. With Mackenzie at the helm, Charlie and the trust management team prepares to present their carefully crafted updates and recommendations, knowing that they must rise to the occasion to meet the expectations of their esteemed client.

With the precision of a seasoned musical conductor, her male assistant swiftly the lady beret and gloves, attending to her every need with practiced efficiency before disappearing in a corner of the room to be forgotten until needed. Meanwhile, Mackenzie herself wastes no time in setting up her workspace, methodically arranging her belongings with the utmost care.

From her sleek briefcase emerges a massive red ledger, its weighty presence a testament to the magnitude of the matters at hand. Alongside it, a black simple notebook and a humble, unassuming pen make their appearance, positioned with precision on the table before her.

Each item is placed with a sense of purpose, as if Mackenzie's entire focus is devoted to the meticulous organization of her workspace. With each movement, she exudes an air of quiet determination, her demeanor signaling to all present that she is fully prepared to tackle the task at hand with unwavering focus and attention to detail.

"Good afternoon," Mackenzie's voice cuts through the room with authority, commanding the attention of everyone present. Her tone is measured and composed, betraying little of the thoughts swirling beneath the surface.

"Please proceed with the presentation," she continues, her gaze sweeping across the room expectantly. "I'm eager to hear about the progress that has been made thus far, as well as the proposed next steps moving forward."

Despite the calmness of her demeanor, there is an unmistakable intensity in Mackenzie's words, hinting at the high standards she holds for both herself and those entrusted with managing her affairs.

David, the Trust Director, straightens his posture and clears his throat softly. With a confident nod, he acknowledges Mackenzie's request and begins to gather his notes, about to begin presenting. Charlie, should normally be the next in line to present

Alice appreciates Charlie's gesture of comfort as they navigate through the presentation. Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the magnitude of the meeting and the presence of Mackenzie, she finds reassurance in Charlie's calm demeanor and supportive touch. As Charlie places his comforting hand on her arm, she feels a surge of surprise and pull her arm, her nerves momentarily getting the best of her. Nonetheless, she appreciates the gesture, silently acknowledging his unspoken encouragement to stay composed and focused.

Mackenzie's mind stands as formidable as granite, an impenetrable fortress that guards her thoughts with an ironclad resolve. Charlie senses the challenge ahead, realizing that gaining insight into her mind will require a considerable effort. While Mackenzie may not be impervious to telepathy, there's an aura of mystery surrounding her mental fortitude, hinting at a level of training or enhancement beyond the ordinary.

David's presentation proceeded smoothly, covering the key aspects of the trust with precision. Mackenzie remained silently engaged, jotting down notes in her sleek black notebook and occasionally referring to her crimson ledger as the discussion delved into the various asset categories. Her focused demeanor signaled a keen interest in the proceedings, and Charlie noted her meticulous attention to detail.

Next it's up to Charlie to present his part.
Mar 20, 2024 2:41 am
As David completes his portion of the presentation, Charlie takes the cue set by Mackenzie's gaze shifting to him. "Ms. Bettencourt, Skadden is prepared to lend full support and aid in the transfer of the trust into your hands. There is, of course, much to accomplish. Of greatest importance is focus, efficiency, and - if I may be so bold - a certain amount of aggression in our approach." He begins to lay out the intended plan in preparation of the legal documents, motions, and requests Skadden will need to submit, in short order, once they begin the formal process of the transfer.

"We need to be three steps ahead of everyone else this transfer touches. We have to assume there will be some that see this as an opportunity to benefit at the expense of the trust and yourself, and my principal goal will be to limit the risk of that happening on all fronts. Of course there are other aspect which require the same level of scrutiny - all the correct filings for the transfer itself, and other ways we'll need to handle finances so as to maximize the portfolio while minimizing tax burden." He goes into detail as to how he plans on making that happen. Seeing in her a desire for detail, he spares no minute aspect of their plan so long as she remains engaged and taking notes.

Charlie's presentation seemed to have landed fairly well, judging by the expressions of those in the room and the subtle cues he picked up from Alice and Avery. However, Mackenzie maintained a guarded demeanor throughout, her emotions and thoughts hidden behind a facade of professionalism. About twenty minutes into the presentation, Mackenzie ceased taking notes, prompting Charlie to conclude his portion and return to his seat.

"He's so composed and cool... sigh (Alice)"

Mackenzie simply nodded in Lauren's direction, signaling her secretary to take charge. Lauren proceeded to distribute a concise two-page document to each attendee. Charlie looks over the document and nods after taking it in for a moment. He takes a breath. "While, as your attorney, I must counsel there may be more lucrative and strategically beneficial properties to prioritize, I respect the wishes of the our client." He looks to the Trust members, "Are we in agreement with this prioritization, as indicated by Ms. Bettencourt?" Up to this point he has made it a point to treat all as a unified entity, but in this final question it is clear he recognizes the Trust Board as Skadden's client - if this list is not supported by them and would serve to negligently devalue the Trust, the line would have to be drawn more clearly.
Mar 20, 2024 3:43 am
To Charlie's surprise, the trustees readily agree without delving much into the specifics. He had anticipated major pushback, considering the potential loss of hundreds of millions by expediting matters—a departure from the trust's original directives.

"It's rather unconventional, but we concur with the proposed list. Any objections from the other trustees?" David queries. However, the lack of questions suggests that Mackenzie's willingness to sacrifice significant funds was anticipated.

This is mind-boggling. Burning through $300 million in taxes just for expediency's sake. Madness. (Avery)

It's baffling. With a strategic reshuffling, we could potentially increase the trust's value by nearly as much as they're prepared to lose. She's essentially loosing $600 million, considering what she could had gain by doing this the smart way. (Alice)
Mar 20, 2024 3:49 am
"Understood," Charlie says. "We'll begin the necessary paperwork. Are there any further matters to attend to? Ms. Bettencourt, do you have any questions?"

"No questions," Mackenzie stated with a neutral tone, her expression giving away nothing as the team presented her with several documents requiring her signature to initiate the process. Additional paperwork would follow as they commenced transferring the assets through the court.

By the time they wrapped up, it was just before dinner, leaving a brief window for Charlie to engage with others before they dispersed. Naturally, everyone is trying to get Mackenzie attention first, but in a professional matter.

Phew! We made it through! I need a shower... (Alice)

Well, it looks like I won't have the tale of a $300 million bonfire to regale anyone with overnight because of those NDAs. I'll definitely need a drink tonight. (Avery)
Mar 20, 2024 5:16 am
"Ladies and gentlemen, I look forward to working with you," Charlie says as they adjourn, standing from his seat.

He looks to Avery and Alice - "Let's debrief bright and early. I have an appointment to make tonight, but we have a lot of work to do. I'll wait with you both while we wait for a cab, if you can stomach me for a few more minutes."
Mar 20, 2024 5:40 am
"I'll see you downstairs. I need to use the ladies' room," Alice said, wiping the sweat from her brow.

"Me too. It's been a long meeting without a break," Avery chimed in, following Alice's lead. It was a common ritual for women to visit the restroom together, a mystery that remained unsolved.

As they gracefully made their way out, Alice cast a brief glance over her shoulder at Charlie.

Meanwhile, Mackenzie was engrossed in conversation with David, leaving little room for anyone else to approach her. Seeing an opportunity, Lauren approached Charlie and handed him a business card.

"This is my direct number if you need anything," she said, pausing for a moment. "Ms. Bettencourt will allow you 10 minutes of her time when David is done. Your performance wasn't stellar, but it was enough for her to give you a chance to speak with her... only if you'd like." With that, the other members of the trust management team began to slowly filter out of the room.

Charlie takes the business card. "Thank you, I'll keep it handy. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and I assume we'll have more to discuss." He glances over to Mackenzie then adds, "I'll be happy to speak with Ms. Bettencourt when she is free."

He waits quietly, placing his things back in his briefcase, then waits for David to finish conversing with Mackenzie. He waits for an indication she is prepared to speak with him then approaches, maintaining a comfortable but polite distance from her. "Ms. Bettencourt. We appreciate you putting your faith in Skadden and we look forward to resolving this matter for you." He smiles, "I quite like your beret."

Sitting across from Charlie, Ms. Bettencourt is momentarily caught off guard by his unexpected comment about her hat. She emits a soft sound of surprise from her throat, unsure of how to respond. With a subtle wave of her hand, she signals for Lauren to leave them alone, and her secretary obeys without a word, maintaining her usual composed demeanor.

Ms. Bettencourt's expression remains neutral as she addresses Charlie's remark about her hat. "Well, I must admit, I wasn't anticipating a conversation about my beret," she responds calmly. "It's nothing particularly remarkable, really. I purchased it from a street vendor in Japan. I simply prefer to have my head covered when I'm outdoors. I am not much into Fashion. "

"My team will thoroughly review your file, but I'd appreciate hearing directly from you. What are your goals? Why are you here? And let's skip the Skadden rhetoric; it's annoying," Ms. Bettencourt states briskly, her tone direct and efficient.
Mar 21, 2024 6:23 am
"Fair enough. To the point, I like it. I'm here because I was asked to be. I'm still here because I'm ambitious. I've propelled myself far on my own merits. One doesn't do that without spotting opportunities and taking risks. This case, Ms. Bettencourt, strikes me as both. I figure at this point there is a 50/50 chance it either costs me my job, or puts me on track to become a partner. So my goals? Be the best damn lawyer I can and tilt the scale in my favor." He raises an eyebrow. "I hope that doesn't put you off, though if I were a betting man, I would guess you've approached your fair share of situations in much the same way."

"The so-called partners at Skadden have no interest in sharing power; they'll string you along for years, dangling the carrot of inclusion until you're gray and worn. It's to their advantage to keep you at arm's length, to exploit you for as long as they can."

She has a more enigmatic expression suddenly.

"Sometimes, one must take risks to attain true greatness. Representing my interests is akin to navigating treacherous waters. Each decision is a ripple that can either calm the surface or create a storm. You must possess the surviving instinct to steer the ship through turbulent seas, or risk being swallowed by the abyss. Consider yourself a boat in my vast ocean of wealth and influence. Will you sail with grace and finesse, or will you be lost to the depths below like so many others?"

"I want to see you succeed, and perhaps once the assets are fully transferred, we can discuss your future. Skadden seems to be hindering your progress, tying you down with their bureaucracy. While I have a history with Ed, going back to my childhood and his ties with my grandfather, I'm determined to carve my own path with individuals I can rely on. Let's test if you're one of them. I'll need my own legal team going forward, and I have little patience for Skadden's antics."
Mar 22, 2024 12:17 am
Charlie listens intently as Mackenzie speaks, not caring or daring to interrupt her. He nods at the appropriate moments and lifts his eyebrow once or twice, and otherwise gives her his full attention. When she finishes, he finally speaks up, "That's a lot to think about, Ms. Bettencourt. And more truth to it than it may seem, I imagine. I will hope that you find I am someone you can rely on, then perhaps we can revisit this conversation." He smiles gently, "Thank you for sharing your time with me. I do like risks and challenges - I look forward to our work together." He gives her a polite nod of his head, and turns to leave.

Mackenzie rises gracefully from her seat, her hands clasped together in front of her at belt level. "Please inform Lauren if any obstacles arise or if representatives from the various corporations are delaying the process," she instructs with a calm authority. "Have a good evening."

She waits for him to exit before attending to her own affairs, ensuring her departure is discreet and unnoticed by the time he reaches the elevator.

As Charlie steps out onto the bustling sidewalk, the warmth of the summer sun embraces him. The air feels sticky, with the temperature hovering above 28°C. He spots Alice waiting for him, her expression brightening as he approaches.

"Avery took her own taxi," Alice informs him, holding her briefcase tightly. "I think she's hosting guests tonight at her place and was in a rush."

I'm glad that shark didn't break him or abuse him. (Alice)
Mar 23, 2024 6:55 am
"I understand. You did well in there, Alice. I know this is a little more than you're used to, but for what its worth, I'm glad to have you with us on this. It can wait until morning, but I need you to start looking into something for us - these priorities Ms. Bettencourt has. I worry that if things go poorly, and we don't properly disclaim the financial dangers in their proposal, it could open Skadden to a risk of malpractice. Can you look into that? See if there is any way we can move forward with their plan, while limiting our exposure to such a risk?"

Alice's anxiety becomes palpable as the dangers ahead are outlined. "I'll speak with David tomorrow and ensure we're prepared on the legal front," she offers, her voice tinged with concern. "Annex 45A2 of the trust's charter outlines specific conditions and paperwork requirements for Skadden to report any significant damages or losses. If the Trust acknowledges the risks and assumes full responsibility through signatures and legal documents, we could mitigate some of the risks. However, this process would significantly delay each transaction, requiring review by our risk management team and approval from the trust."

She pauses, her brow furrowed in contemplation. "We find ourselves caught between Ms. Bettencourt and the trust, both pushing for expedited processes regardless of the consequences. "
Mar 23, 2024 8:44 am
"You know as well as I do, if we don't do as you suggest, it'll be our asses on the line. Skadden may get hit with malpractice, but it'll be us that take the blame. Hell, that could have been the plan anyways - Bettencourt's and the Trust's, make us move so quickly to secure assets they personally care about, even if it doesn't make financial sense, with the expectation they can just sue Skadden to get the difference back anyways. Come to think of it, that could be why Ms. Bettencourt hasn't brought her own lawyer in - they'd be obligated to advise her against this course and she wouldn't want that."

He hesitates a moment and drops his voice. "She told me her and Ed go back a long time, he had dealings with her grandfather. I hate to think it, but it could be why he pawned this off on me - us - so the deal would go through as Bettencourt wants, but he stays out of the line of fire."

"Do it, just as you said. I don't care if it slows things down - that's on them. It'll still be faster than finding another firm to do the transfer. We'll play it off as a necessity, as part of our willingness to proceed with their planned approach."

Alice wipes away the sweat beads forming on her forehead, a combination of the scorching summer heat and the tension of their current predicament. "Yes, I will. It's the most prudent course of action." She glances at her surroundings, the oppressive weather only adding to their discomfort. "Are you heading back to the office? I have a few loose ends to tie up. If not, we can part ways here, and reconvene with Avery tomorrow morning."

Sadly, we have to part ways. I shouldn't be greedy, he is probably having a woman waiting for him home. At least we'll have plenty of time together on this case in the coming months, unless, of course, we find ourselves buried under lawsuits and unemployed. (Alice)

Reluctantly Charlie shakes his head. "I am going to see a friend's concert later. I'll need to get ready for that beforehand, but we I'll see you in the morning." He pauses briefly, "Would you like to get lunch with me tomorrow, maybe? Just you and me. If you wouldn't be comfortable with that, I understand."

"I'd love that, but it might be weird if we don't invite Avery, (Alice)"

"Let's play it by ear tomorrow. I have a feeling it's going to be a long day, and we could treat ourselves and order those fancy lunch boxes from Gatsby," she suggested, her cheeks flushing with nervousness.

With the rush hour making it difficult to find a taxi, Alice opted to use a ride-sharing app to order a convenient ride instead.

" It's my ride already. Enjoy the concert! "

"Sounds like a plan," Charlie says. He opens her door for her and sees her inside the car before waving goodbye. She had the right idea, with traffic like this. He finds he has plenty of time before the concert, so decides to walk a bit while waiting to hail a taxi. As he does, he listens to the thoughts of strangers - just surface level stuff, but he sometimes enjoys feeling that hidden pulse of the city.

After a couple blocks he finally hails a taxi and has it take him to his apartment where he prepares for the evening's concert.
