You stand in the muddy plaza looking at the entrance to the tower. Passersby avoid this space. The unfortunates whose shopfronts once faced the plaza have boarded up those entrances and have broken other doorways into alleys that do not directly open onto the accursed ground beneath the red tower.

A light rain falls on your heads. It is Obrast, the first month of mud.

What desperation drives you to consider delving into the dead wizard's tower?

Zama flexed her fingers around the handle of her umbrella. The light rain pelted on the orange-red canvas which guided the meandering rivulets of water to the mud about her feet.

Her hirelings were late, again.
At least a few contract-workers answered the call.

"They say Ikhtanabu Xul sought immortality inside those walls. I won the rights to this building at last month’s auctioneer hall. Thanks to the backing of the Caravaneer Guilds, I am now the owner of this place.

I already have a buyer lined up. We clear this tower and I can sell for a tidy profit.
"

Then she slowly makes eye contact with each of her contractors.

"But if we fail, the Caravaneer Guilders will send their collectors, if you know what I mean." Debt collectors happy to collect blood or gold, depending on the circumstances.

"That means, the faster we do this the better. And, more importantly, if I happen to die during all this…well… all bets are off. The Caravaneer Guild will come to get what they can. And I can guarantee they will not see a reason to compensate you."

Zama looked over her shoulder. Where are those ungrateful hirelings?, she thought to herself.

She pans her gaze upon this impromptu crew, and her eyes fall on Azif of Mazad. Her nostrils flair at the trappings of another Ahyada acolyte. She steps closer to this worshiper of Taraam.

"Tell me, Azif is it? Why is a Taraam acolyte interested in the ruins of Ikhtanabu Xul’s tower?"

Just before Zama's question, Azif's eyes fall on the ivory hilt of a long, slightly curved dagger that his smaller, somewhat crooked-bodied companion wears in a dirty white waist-sash. The blade of the dagger is unnaturally bright - Azif's knowledge of arcane lore tells him that is starmetal, precious as gold. The hilt is even more interesting: those are necromantic runes, intended to ... then Zama's voice snaps his attention away from the beautiful and far-too-expensive knife worn by the degenerate.
Mar 12, 2024 7:17 am
Azif look Zama Mu-Ram in the eyes, a small smile appears in his thin pale face.
"I have good sources that there is great knowledge to be found, do not worry our path is intertwined, i can see it now, great Ahyada"
Azif takes this moment to look around
"I’m also curious about all of you, what drives you to this dangerous task, just wealth?"
Mar 12, 2024 12:02 pm
Arius rocks back and forth on his heels throughout Zama’s speech, unimpressed and clearly impatient to get going. His face and hands are covered in faint scars— souvenirs from previous jobs — and he wears a grim, no-nonsense expression. He didn’t notice Azif staring at his dagger because his eyes are fixed on the tower.

"Just here to help Madame Mu-Ram clear out her tower and make a little money doing it," he responds to Azif’s question. Probably best not to admit to his new teammates that he thinks he might be going crazy. He asks Zama, "Shall I check the door for traps while we wait for your other hirelings to join us, ma’am?"

"Need not be scared of collectors, if the stories about this tower are true.", Orloth says as he stands. He scans the tower and the horizon, trying to ignore his ferret's nervous chattering from inside his rutsack.

The rain hits his stoic brow causing him to give thanks for his leather cloak. He sniffs the air, taking in the faint scent of earthworms as they escape their muddy burrows fleeing the rain-soaked ground.

Orloth smiles and a fleeting thought fills his mind.

"Lovely day for dire work.", he thinks.

He silently curses this dreary place, but he cannot back out now. He needs that treasure. His people need that treasure.

Turning towards Zama he says, "Let's hope the rumors are true. At least the rumors of treasure."

OOC:
Let's say that Arius uses "awareness" to check for traps - and a necromancer's traps would rely on deviltry - then he would roll d4+d6 d6 (knows devilty)+d6 (upgraded awareness) and take the higher result. The risk is that, if a trap is there, it is not found - and when we try to enter through the door, a bad thing happens.

Zama takes some cautious steps in the mud, and considers the tower.

How tall is the tower?
Is this a circular tower, square, octagon? What is the diameter, roughly?
Any windows, balconies, drain pipes, etc..?
Does the plaza completely surround the tower where the tower juts out of the middle?

What sort of mechanical roll should I make for Zama's hirelings?

Orloth says:
"Let's hope the rumors are true. At least the rumors of treasure."
Zama tilts her head and looks down her nose at Orloth.

"And how did a Nomad such as yourself learn of such treasure?"

Despite her dislike for the uncivilized nomads, and their horrible habits of keeping filthy pets (she glares at the ferret), she can't deny that sometimes the peoples from outside the city have their ways of knowing...

Arius says:
"Shall I check the door for traps while we wait for your other hirelings to join us, ma’am?"
"You are the expert here when it comes to cleaning out this tower, proceed as you see best. Azif, what say you?"
She looks to Azif, to see how the group dynamics will play out now that Arius has offered the first suggestions. Will Azif demure or speak up, she wonders.
Mar 12, 2024 7:20 pm
Before speaking Azif inspects the surrounding terrain for signs of passage. Is this place as avoided like everyone says?

Arius approaches the tower and begins to methodically search the entrance for signs of traps or other defences.

Orloth raises his eyebrow at Zama's distain.

"I have my ways. When one listens to nature, they learn all sorts of interesting information. ", he says and the thinks, "or I just hung out and listened to gossip for 5 minutes."

He watches as Arius observes the tower.

As Arius examines the high round arch of the door frame, standing tippy toe to do so, he feels a painful pricking in his finger tips. There is devilish power retained in the claw marks that are scratched into the red stone blocks. Perhaps a pass phrase needs to be spoken to keep that power back when entering?

Zama notes the tower is square, about twenty paces tall and about ten paces to a side. It stands surely upright, still in good repair. The windows are shuttered with red plates.

Azif sees no other footprints in the mud. The surrounding buildings are boarded shut. People truly do seem to avoid this place.
Mar 13, 2024 5:30 pm
Azif nods slowly
"Mr. Arias shows great wisdom in his prudency, we all should follow is exemple"
Azif then moves towards the door, patiently waiting for Arius to finish his task and also to inspect the door more closely.
"Who knows what type of danger we will face"
Mar 13, 2024 11:28 pm
Arius points out the claw marks in the stone to the rest of the crew and says, "There’s deviltry worked into the bricks. Seems that it might require a pass phrase or something of the sort to safely cross the threshold."
Mar 14, 2024 12:03 am
Zama’s face flushes with a mixture of rage and shame.
Any land purchaser worth their salt would have required the warding passwords as part of the deal. This shows poorly upon her.

Her eyes dart, waiting to see which one of her contractors turns this on her first, calling her out on such a lapse.

Seething at herself for forgetting something so fundamental, her mind races. Then she has an idea.

Her hirelings. Once they arrive, she’ll blame the hirelings for not knowing. Though she wonders, maybe someone could track down one of Ikhtanabu Xul’s apprentices. Surely some of them are still in Belthaar.

"Deviltry work.. pass phrase to enter...how interesting"

Azif casually turns his attention from the door to Arius' dagger, do the necromancy runes hold any clues?

It's not possible to actually read the runes from this distance; Azif would need to hold the dagger in his hands.

As Zama plots on whom to throw before the rampaging elephant of embarrassment, she notices her principal hireling, Lothkwa, has arrived. He is a tall Azimban man of indeterminate age who is dressed in appropriate Susrahn robes and wears the brass diadem befitting a senior personal servant. He carries the traditional spear-staff for which his people are well known.

Grinning broadly, Lothkwa shakes his spear toward the group. "Good morning friends!" he exclaims, oblivious to the slowly increasing rainfall. His sandals squelch loudly in the mud as he approaches.
Mar 15, 2024 9:33 pm
"Ah, greetings Lothkwa. Everyone, this is Lothkwa, my family's trusted agent."
Zama waves her hand in a broad arc as if presenting the group to Lothkwa.

"Lothkwa, did you find the warding passwords to this tower in the auction paperwork? I was told it would be in there. Also, was there any word about Ikhtanabu Xul’s apprentices? Perhaps if we have a name or two, Azif here might recognize them. Azif, would Ikhtanabu Xul’s apprentices be the kind of people found in your circles? I think it might help this project, if we could interview a few of them, don't you think?"

"Priests and sorcerers have one thing in common they like to keep their knowledge to themselves"
Azif appears to be recalling a memory that makes his presence quite dark, but then he startle back to the present.
"Of course it is possible to find priests and sorcerers working together, but I'm not sure I can help, i have no ideia where the apprendices of Ikhtanabu Xul may be, but perhaps someone in this cursed place knows something. I'm sure you, great Zama and Mr. Orloth, can loosen some tongues."
He then looks curiously at his two companions.
Mar 16, 2024 12:54 pm
"Tongues will wag from both favor and fracas. Though I'm skilled in the later, I have observed the strong tang of liquid appeal gives more pleasing results. We should wait to see what her servant has brought.", Orloth sardonically says observing the new arrival.
Mar 18, 2024 1:47 pm
"ah, yes," responds Lothkwa. "The passphrase is a sequence of gestures. I hope that I recall correctly! Here, watch." and he carefully touches the door frame at seven points.

There is a faint crackling noise. Lothkwa gently manipulates the lever of the door. It opens inward into darkness.

"Lady Zama," adds the senior servant, "you were wise to avoid the mountain oysters at that questionable restaurant last night. I am glad that I heeded your words. The others did not and they are not well this morning. Regrettably they will not be joining us!"
Mar 18, 2024 9:30 pm
"Allow me to go first lady. If anyone has a torch or means of light may I borrow it. I wish to scout ahead. Best to not get caught by suprise in the dark.", says Orloth turning to the group. He reaches his hand out for a torch.
Mar 19, 2024 1:24 am
Arius quickly lights a torch and passes it to Orloth. "We're right behind you," he promises.
Mar 19, 2024 7:03 am
Happy to get out of the rain Azif also follows his companions
Mar 19, 2024 2:09 pm
Orloth takes the torch and nods. He turns and carefully enters the tower's hungry interior, checking for anything that might spring out of the dark, be it the machinations of man or some foul horror left by fell deviltry.

Checking for traps/people
Mar 19, 2024 4:07 pm
Although it is dim due to the heavy shutters at the windows, a little damp and musty due to the rainy season, and completely bare of furnishings due to the depredations of the wastrel apprentices ... The large square high ceiling room that occupies apparently the whole ground floor of the tower does not seem dangerous.

There is a straight stone staircase descending at the middle of the floor. It is surrounded by chest high bronze banisters with a locked gate. To the right of the entrance, another stone staircase ascends along the wall to a dark opening in the ceiling about fifteen feet up. The ceiling itself is unremarkable wooden beans and the undersides of the floor boards above. There is a massive hook, above the central basement stair, where a candelabra might have dangled in the past. The room is generally dull red in color owing to the headsized stone blocks of its construction and the scuffed ochre paint on the wooden floor.
Mar 20, 2024 2:40 am
Zama only enters after all the others have gone inside. She lowers her umbrella, gives it a shake, and folds it like a precious flag or ritualistic garment.

"Well, a nice, empty room. It should make for a serviceable base of operations."

She eyes the stairs going up. Clearing the upper levels first makes most sense. Worst comes to worse they can just brick up the basement and be done with it. Nobody the wiser.
OOC:
What is the climate in Belthaar? Is it cold enough to warrant a fireplace in this lower level?

"So tell me, Arius, do you think it folly to seek immortality as Ikhtanabu Xul tried?"
The question is about Xul, but Zama, out of the corner of her eye, waits to see how Azif will react to Arius’ answer. Never too soon to play your contractors and hirlings against each other, she thinks. The last thing she needs is for this group is join ranks and move against her.
Mar 20, 2024 4:13 am
Arius is busy examining the lock on the bronze gate. He does not look up from his investigation as he answers Zama’s question. "Can’t say I’ve ever given it much thought, but if a powerful wizard like Xul couldn’t figure it out, I don’t think the rest of us have much hope." He shrugs. "Most people are too busy trying to make it to tomorrow to be thinking about forever, anyway."

Tapping the lock, he asks the rest of the group, "Do we want this unlocked now or would we rather leave it locked while we tackle the upper floors? Seems odd that it has a lock at all given that one could easily climb over the banister…"

Asif doesn't react to Zama question, but he does reacts to Arius' answer with a raised eyebrow. But he keeps his thoughts to himself.

"If we are going to make this floor our base, it would be preferable, for safety's sake, to first know where the stairs leading up will lead and keep that closed, I advise"
Mar 20, 2024 5:28 pm
"I agree with Azif. We should check upstairs and secure at least the entrance if possible.", Orloth says, the sputtering torch accentuating his sharp features as he looks around the room.

Orloth nods and accends the staircase slowly, carefully, testing and checking for traps and listening for unwelcome company.
Mar 22, 2024 5:34 pm
Zama suppresses a smile. She is starting to like the Azif of Mazad. A bold move ordering Lothkwa. The man is direct and ambitious. She can use this.

She recalled the day some upstart ordered a younger Lothkwa around, and her father, dropped his spiced tea and flew into a rage. He even drew his scimitar. The upstart dropped to his knees and apologized. That saved his head.

Enforcement through the blade is not Zama's style, though. Zama secretly hopes Lothkwa will play along, instill trust and reliance -- and eventually Azif will drop his guard, and Zama will have power even more deadly than a scimitar.

Lothkwa nods and smiles politely. He steps to the door, standing facing out into the plaza.

Orloth ascends, the torch flame scorching the stone wall. There is a slight draft on the stairs, which have no banister. Ikhtanabu liked to live dangerously maybe.

As Orloth's head reaches the opening in the floor above, the torchlight reveals to him a solid-looking door at the top of the stairs. The door is painted in an umber hue.

At the basement gate ...

... Arius cannot restrain the yelp of pain as the lock that he is examining suddenly produces a plethora of needles, which pierce his hands! It is a painful moment as he wrests his bleeding fingers free of the spikes. The lock, released from his grasp, clatters against the frame of the gate. Blood oozes down his hands.

Arius mutters a string of profanities as he hastily rummages through his pack for some strips of cloth that he can use to bandage his hands. "Should have seen that one coming…" he grumbles, annoyed with himself for being so careless.
Mar 23, 2024 12:54 pm
" Ahyada protect us! Arius let me help you. I have something great for that nasty wound and also clean bandages"

Azif starts searching his bag and takes out a vial with a light green substance.

"As a former acolyte of Ahyada i have good experience with the healing arts"

If Arius let Azif help him he will probably noticed his experience but also that he is very delicate.
Mar 23, 2024 1:14 pm
Arius freezes in the middle of rummaging through his pack, regarding Azif and his vial of green liquid with obvious distrust and suspicion. The blood continues to drip from his hands. After a few seconds of internal deliberation, he relents and surrenders his hands to the cultist’s care. "That’s very kind of you. Thank you," he says, stiffly.

"What''s happening?", he says.

"Everything’s fine," Arius replies, embarrassed. "The lock on the gate was trapped and I wasn’t as careful as I should have been."
Mar 25, 2024 5:39 pm

"Carefull Orloth in this place boldness will be our doom" Asif says looking over his shoulder as he finishes helping Arius
Mar 28, 2024 2:13 pm
Orloth confronts the umber door. It looks like it should swing away from the stairs. It is closed by a dulled brass lever and latch. The end of the lever that Orloth can see is shaped like a small hand with its fingers spread wide. The hand has six clawed fingers.

Azif finishes with Arius' hands. The ooze of blood is stanched and the pain fades.

As the iron touches the brass, the hand twitches upward. With a small clank, the latch lifts. The door swings a few inches away from Orloth.

Downstairs, Lothkwa says "I smell deviltry above."

Indeed, an indeterminate odor of foulness wafts to the ranger through the crack of the door. The weasel chitters and squirms in its bag.
Apr 2, 2024 12:37 pm
Orloth's mouth twists into a grimace as the odour wafts around him. He places a hand on Chancy trying to calm the Ferret.

As he does this he backs down the stairs several steps and calls out, "I believe Lothkwa is right. Something fetid and foul lies beyond that door. Could one of you with knowledge of such things discern it's nature, deviltry or death? Prehaps Azif or our patron?"
Apr 2, 2024 6:53 pm
Azif moves towards the stairs and up to the door, one hand tight on his spear and other using his sleeve to cover his nose. While passing Orloth almost in a whisper he says "No sudden movements"
Then he approaches the door, but keeping some distance he uses the bottom of his spear to open the door slowly.

Apr 4, 2024 11:26 pm
Arius draws his dagger and follows Azif up the stairs, stopping a few steps behind Orloth.
Apr 5, 2024 1:57 pm
The room beyond the door has shutters at the windows, as below. The torchlight from behind and below Azif does not reveal what lies within. The odor, however, is a deathly stench. Azif gulps back against his rebellious stomach.
Apr 6, 2024 10:29 am
Arius reflexively drops his dagger, startled. It lands on the stone steps with a noisy clatter. After a second or two he sheepishly picks it up again and looks it over. He could have sworn he felt it move on its own. Perhaps just his imagination? He hasn't been sleeping well of late thanks to that nagging urge to explore the tower, so perhaps his tired mind is simply playing tricks on him. Still, maybe he should ask Azif to take a look at it later…
Apr 6, 2024 11:16 am
Azif's pale skin becomes even paler and his skeletal face becomes more somber. He cant help to stagger back a couple of steps bumping into Orloth. He compuses himself, after what he did, the time to be scare was long past. He points to the darkness.
"Bring the torches"
Apr 6, 2024 6:30 pm
Orloth nods and readies his axe. He lifts the torch and sets his shoulders.

"Watch my back.", he says and enters the darkened room.
Apr 7, 2024 3:43 pm

Apr 7, 2024 9:32 pm
"By the gods", Orloth says with a choked breath and puts his arm over his nose and mouth.

It is too no avail, the foul putresence caresses him, sicking his stomach. He puts his head out the door and gasps.

"Deviltry, some terrible blood magic. There is an impossible table, held aloft by grinning death and 6 doors, three to either side. Between the portals are gorey statuary made of the cold flesh and bowels of some poor unfortunates, sacrifices. The air kills the senses. Best prepare something to wrap around your face."

With that, Orloth cuts a bit of his tunic and fashions himself a bandana. As he secures it to his face he says, "Follow me" and re-enters the room.

"This is intolerable. Are there any windows to be opened?" Zama shouts up to the others. She fishes around in her pockets for a scarf or cloth to cover her nose.
Though, in the back of her mind, she quietly contemplates who in the city might be interested in a bunch of corpses. We can't just dump them in the middle of the plaza could we? She wonders.

Arius holds a rag over his mouth and nose and follows Orloth and Azif into the upstairs chamber. He stops in the doorway and narrows his eyes at the macabre scene, trying to figure out how they’re going to get these bodies out of here. "Maybe we could burn them? Seems easier (and, frankly, less gross) to dispose of bones and ashes than desiccated corpses. The building is stone so there’s not much risk of burning the whole place down by accident…"
Apr 10, 2024 1:13 pm
As Arius enters the grisly scene, the pale blue glass table flickers with an ephemeral inner glow. Instantly, a rich repast appears atop the rectangular slab of glass: a princely brunch. Eggs, both scrambled and boiled; various fruits; glistening sausages; flat bread and loaf bread. Delicious odors mingle with the stench of death.
Apr 12, 2024 1:40 am
The mingling odours of food and decay make Arius’ stomach turn. He’s beginning to regret taking this job. "Goes without saying that no one should eat that, right?"

Certain that the bedevilled food is best left untouched, he enters the room proper to help Azif investigate the bodies. He doesn’t know much about healing or anatomy but he’s perceptive, so maybe he’ll notice something useful.
Apr 12, 2024 4:14 am
"What? Did I hear that right? Who's talking about eating anything?" Zama shouts up the stairs. (As of now she has not realized the food has appeared.)
It didn't sound like Arius was joking, she thinks. Additionally, she wonders if it was Azif was trying to eat the foul rot up there...

Orloth follows Arius into the room, stealing himself against the stench.

"It's a little better.", thinks Orloth as he lies to himself. He follows the two investigating the bodies. Chancy rolls in his bag protesting against the odd smells. Orloth places a calming hand on the ferret and double checks to make sure the top of the bag is secure. Arius is right, no one human would or should eat that tricksy food, but a ferret? He doesn't want to take a chance that something might be too intriguing to his furry little friends clever nose.

The muffled voice of Zama reverberates off the stair walls. It sounds like it is coming from a distant well. This causes him to pause in front of the terrible table.

He looks closer at the foul piece of furniture, careful not to touch the bedeviled thing. Prehaps there could be a rune or a sigal to explain the phantom food?
