Chapter 1: The Adventure Begins

Mar 11, 2024 4:50 pm
As the sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows across the tranquil landscape of Meadowfen, an air of unease settles over the village. For generations, this sleepy hamlet nestled amidst the verdant expanse of Humblewood has known only peace and serenity. Yet, in recent days, a dark cloud has descended upon the once-idyllic community.

The heartbeat of Meadowfen, its fields and pastures, lie desolate and barren, stripped of life-giving rains that have failed to grace its soil. The absence of these seasonal blessings has plunged the village into hardship, exacerbating the already dire situation. Caravans bearing much-needed supplies have vanished without a trace, whispers of bandits haunting the roads like specters in the night.

Amidst the chaos that grips Meadowfen, the village Elder, with a heavy heart and grim determination, dispatched brave souls to uncover the truth behind the ominous plume of black smoke that stains the northern horizon. Yet, as days turned to nights and hope waned, not a single soul among those sent forth has returned to tell the tale. The shadow of uncertainty looms large, leaving the fate of the town's troops shrouded in mystery, swallowed whole by the enigma that awaits beyond the village's borders.

As your group traversed the familiar path back from Ashburrow, you passed the very troops the Elder had sent forth, their absence now a haunting presence in the hearts of those who knew them. The weight of their unfulfilled mission hangs heavy in the air, a grim reminder of the dangers that lurk just beyond the safety of Meadowfen's boundaries. You had seen this black plume about a day before you passed the group coming from the direction you came from.

You all spent a night in Meadowfren at the local Inn each with your own room (unless you think you would share).

Please start by describing how you start your day.
Mar 11, 2024 6:04 pm
OOC:
Charun got used to sleeping in barracks so is all for sharing to save coin but wont push it.
Raising with the first light of dawn Charun packs his gear and straightens his room before heading out to an open area to practice with his weapons. After completing his morning drills the Luma will clean himself and his gear before returning to the commons for food and news. Grinning and greeting others that are up and about this morning person is oblivious to any possible reason others might not be as energetic and cheerful as he but does not let other possible foul moods affect his cheerful outlook. Until he remembers the loss of the local guard detachment. Pondering what may have occurred to the north they just left he will eat and await his companions before making plans.
Mar 11, 2024 6:29 pm
Hurin walks back to the edge of the village, the hour before dawn being the time he finds both tranquility and meditation. However, there is little to still his mind as his gray eyes once again move northward towards the black plume of smoke. The tension in his body and the bristling of his fur set him on edge. It’s times like these he welcomes the warnings of Hath, though, it doesn’t take the subtle nature of the Whisperer to sense the discord over Meadowfen. A rumble in his stomach lets him know it is time to return to the inn. He pulls his hood up a little further and makes his way down the dirt road, giving Charun a wave in passing. At the inn door he sees the despair on the faces of the townsfolk leaving their homes for barren fields. He can’t help but feel sorrow for them, their once verdant fields reduced to nothing more than arid dirt.
Mar 11, 2024 8:36 pm
Cyrus is sitting outside the inn, carving a piece of wood. He is making a holy-, or at least a symbol to Gesmer. Its good work, but he is clearly not happy with it. At the time breakfeast is ready is packs up his tools with reverence and goes inside.

Good morning innkeeper. I plugged your bucket. The water you put in it, will now stay there. You should talk with the smith about the door to the outhouse. It needs new hinges. My patchwork will not hold forever.
The bucket they had discussed, but the outhouse door, was a small repair that he just did. Seeing the innkeeper smile and put a plate of breakfast, and a slice of seedcake, makes him feel good. Gesmer was right. There is worth in creating and repairing.

I'm going to be referring a lot to Gesmer, so here is the lore

A sun's rise is a beacon's call to adventure.
-Wilhelm Brookstone, The Mysterious Mole Mines

Leif fought off the stinging ray of sunlight as best he could, muttering and covering his face with a blanket. He'd had a terrible sleep, fear for his parents and childhood friends and neighbors weighing heavily on his mind, and it was those thoughts that spurred him awake, though not without a string of words his mother would've smacked him for uttering. The smell of her cooking wafted to his nose, and dashed away the last vestiges of sleep.

He looked out the window from his old room. The black plume on the horizon blackened his thoughts again. He'd seen the troops that the Elders had sent out to investigate, and even then he had a sense of foreboding, but now he was just saddened over it. I should've joined them. Leif thought, but shook his head. Likely he'd just be missing too now.

A breakfast of apple pastries, creamy turnovers, and fresh berries broke his fast. It'd been good to see his parents, he worried deeply for their safety with that plume in the distance, but coin was running low again, and he best make his way back to Alderheart soon, although... perhaps a stop by the inn, see some old friends one more time, and see if there were any new chatter about what's going on.

Yawning. Stretching. Noisily smacking her lips.

This how Sherry awakes slowly after a night in a room shared with many others. Snow white fur smoothening, she dusts of her well worn cloak and sorts through her collection of weapons. Even as scimitars get girded under a narrow waist and an old, but well kept crossbow slung over a slight shoulder, Sherry doesn't cut an imposing figure. Small and lithe for a mapach, the young woman makes up for in energy what she lacks in size. Graceful, swift movements and a constantly wandering gaze make the former bandit appear awake and present. Her rogueish smile combined with dark eyes has caused many a heart to flutter.

And one more thing; Sherry is broke. Broke over her tiny, round, white furred ears. Even if the young woman had "found" some coins yesterday. Enough to pay for shelter, dinner and breakfast for maybe a night or two. But not enough to reach Alderheart. A thing she plans to do so with something to show in her now empty pockets.

Finally arriving at the inn's common room, she orders some porridge and hopes for a generous use of ham and carrots in it. This should keep her warm for a while. Reclaiming a pleasant spot in of the corners, the mapach draws her hood a bit deeper and starts to savor each bite.

There is a commotion in the village square.

Leif sees a wounded strig woman limp towards the Meadowfen Elder’s home, staggering and catching herself on the side of a well. She is bloodied, and her tawny feathers are singed and flecked with ash and soot while he is walking to the Inn.

Those in the Inn would hear the commotion and a crowd beginning to form around the Elder's home if they look outside.

Mar 12, 2024 9:35 pm
Leif rushed over to Cara. He didn't know her well, but knew of her and her work, having always dreamed of owning one of her beautifully crafted blades. Now she was the first creature to return from being sent out, though her battered state certainly brought nothing but bad tidings. "Easy, Cara, easy." Leif wasn't particularly strong, or large, but he helped walked her over to the Elder's home.

"What happened?" He asked her, as a throng of folks gathered around the house.
OOC:
Leif would never just walk on by if he saw someone injured, so I hope this is okay.

"I must speak to the Elder, we are all in grave danger. The Grove has taken an entire town." Cara keeps pushing her way through, seemingly ignoring those helping her. She is clearly on a mission.

At this moment, a wizened gallus, who was sitting on her front porch, rises and pulls open her door, waving for Cara to come. Cara cannot carry herself anymore and starts leaning on those helping her.
Mar 13, 2024 2:19 am
Leif was glad that his friends were around, for Cara was too large for him to carry on his own, but he helped carry her in. His thoughts were a jumble of dread and anticipation. Why were they all in danger? The Grove isn't that close by. And which town succumbed to it? Surely nothing nearby. But even as his mind flailed around, outwardly Leif calm as a summer creek. His senses were all heightened as if danger was nearby, and he waited patiently for Cara to divulge her secrets.

As people begin to react to the commotion outside and stream out, Sherry palms two considerable pieces of bread while passing some abandon tables and pours another steaming stew into her already half-empty bowl, filling it up again. A lucky day - at least so far, the mapach decides, chewing and slurping happily.

As soon as Sherry gets outside, she deftly climbs onto a tall barrel and lets her short legs dangle freely as she continues consuming her porridge enthusiastically.

Hoping the eldest will come outside, the young woman remains sitting on her observation post for the time being and keeps an eye out for what happens next. As well as for trouble. That bastard is never far!

Cyrus is currioius and what to hear what is going on. Giving the chance he'll will help and assist Cara getting to the elder
Mar 13, 2024 6:31 pm
"It’s clear you have endured much, my child, the respected gallus says, motioning to the party to gather around. "But we must know what happened out there."

Cara explains that the fires from the Scorched Grove have spread to the hillside town of Ashbarrow and razed it to the ground. Cara warns that the roads are full of bandits. Luckily, she escaped with her life. Others, Ashbarrow citizens fleeing their burning homes, were not so lucky. Cara doesn’t know where those captured by the bandits were taken.

Ardwyn looks to be contemplating these matters then turns to those who gathered to help...specifically at Leif who he has known for years.

Leif...you and those you travel with are on your way to Alderheart correct? Would you please take a message to the Birdfolk Council to warn them and plea for them to help us? While Meadowfen is safe for now, their support is greatly needed. I do not think we will survive without it and the roads are too dangerous for anyone but the most experienced travelers
Mar 13, 2024 7:37 pm
Ashbarrow razed to the ground? Leif was just there a few days ago. His heart hammered like a drum inside him, but he simply nodded at Ardwyn. "I'll see it done."

In truth, he didn't put much faith in the Birdfolk Council. The only thing they ever did with grounded folks were to look down upon them from their lofty perch, but Ardwyn was right, they needed help, and they had to try. If bandits really are roaming the roads brazenly and in great numbers, it'd take all of Leif's cunning to make it to Alderheart. He looked to his companions, and hoped they'd agree to help. Amaranthine knows he needed it.
Mar 13, 2024 8:09 pm
Hurin gives Leif a look of concern before nodding his head.

"To Alderheart then."
Mar 13, 2024 8:09 pm
Wait. The grove is just a burnout piece of land right? How can it clame another city? Unless there was a new fire. Is that what we saw in the horizon the other day?
Bandits and the Birdfolk Council. Two groups that Cyrus would prefer not to tangle with
Mar 13, 2024 8:42 pm
The Grove has been around for a long time. Back during the Great Calamity it started nothing more than a single fire but spread to cover an entire region to the size it is now. The Tenders believe that if we care for the Grove we can bring it back to the lush forest it once was....

If it has started to expand again, something terrible must have happened. The whole Wood could be in danger, not just us.
Mar 14, 2024 11:06 am
Completely finishing her surprisingly satisfying breakfast, Sherry smacks her lips and gently strokes her full belly and burps gratified. After extracting a bit of ham with a toothpick between her razor sharp teeth, she jumps from her barrel on a crate and back to the ground. Placing her snow-white paws on the hilts of her scimitars, she waltzes slowly to the rest of the group, with her typical swaying hips.

These are some dire news! Always a good chance to make a quick coin. Or many of them!Professionally suppressing a giddy greedy grin, Sherry's mood sours after a few heartbeats. The others don't ask for a compensation for their trouble.
And she wants to change her life, the mapach woman admonishes herself with a bit of guilty conscience. Even change to a better person maybe. A girl has to eat, but not turn a profit from the misery of others, that has always been her rule.

Not revealing anything of this, she nods as well as everyone of their group declares their intent to help and bring the letter to Alderheart.

I hope the bandits were not foolish enough to tamper with the forces sustaining the Grove. It seems too coincidental that they were there in strength just when this event happened. Or perhaps a bandit mage was responsible for the fires and hoped to use the Grove's proximity as a cover of their blatant attack on the people. I suggest the Perch Guard of all nearby settlements be warned and you call up a militia as quickly as possible. Charu speaks before thinking. The elder likely has already had these thoughts, and more.

Turning to address Ardwyn, a bit embarrassed ,he asks Is there anything else you wish up to do on our way? If not we should set out immediately. It also may bear more weight if you can give us a short written report or token to indicate we bear word from the Meadowfen leadership.

I wouldn't count on bandits keeping their hands to them self, if they saw an opportunity to fill their pockets. Even if it will be the death of us all.
Mar 15, 2024 1:49 am
These are all good things to consider but we cannot know for sure. Thank you all for helping. You may want to stop in Winnowing Reach on your way to Alderheart. They have representation in the Birdfolk Council unlike us, if their Magistrate provides introductionto the court it may prove useful

Here is a letter, though that can only be proof of what happened. Unfortunatelyi do not think even my signature would garuantee a timely audience with the council. For that I would seek assistance from the Magistrate in Winnowing Reach Ardwyn writes a note detailing what happened.
OOC:
sorry totally missed that request been computer deprived for a few days so just doing phone posting.
Mar 15, 2024 9:06 am
Leif looked at Charun wryly. Must be nice being a Luna, having the confidence that the Perch Guards would help. Leif kept held his tongue and turned to the Mayor instead.

"So, seek the Magistrate in Winnowing Reach to get us an audience with the council. Anything else that you think would be helpful? Any equipment here that could help? Cara, you have any weapons at your shop that could help us out? Potions, scrolls, anything useful, Mayor? Any friends in high places? The town’s survival may ride with us, if you’ve any favors owed, now’s the time to settle your accounts, Mayor."
Mar 15, 2024 3:49 pm
Unfortunately us here in Meadowfen live quite an isolated life just outside the Wood. Our political power in Alderheart is quite small. As for equipment, I am sure Cara will provide anything she can give and I could provide each one of you with one of these... Ardwyn goes over to his desk and pulls out a few potions and hands them to the group.
OOC:
Everyone can add a basic health potion
Mar 15, 2024 3:49 pm
Cara then looks at Ardwyn solemnly Unfortunately most of my good wares are lost with the militia, I am worried that if we give what we have left and need to protect ourselves we wont have the means.
Mar 15, 2024 4:45 pm
"I think between all of us we’ll manage. Please, save what you have."

Huron pulls back his hood a bit more and looks to Cara.

"Did you personally witness what may have stoked the flames of the Grove? Can we be sure bandits have a hand in this or possibly something else? If not and it truly is the Grove itself perhaps the Tenders would have answers."
Mar 15, 2024 5:20 pm
I did not see who started the fire, when we arrived in Ashburrow it was already aflame. What I do know, is that the land of Grove. The desolation that happens within it, has spread to overtake the entire town. Bandits I believe just took advantage of the situation to fill their pockets. Cara looks down and sighs. The town itself was filled with emberbats, as well as something else, I didn't get a good look but the earth around us shifted and some of my men disappeared. This was not the work of bandits.
Mar 15, 2024 8:29 pm
Leif takes the potion with a grateful nod of his head and stows it away. "Perhaps after we deliver our message, we can head out to Ashburrow and investigate there, but first thing first: alert the powers that be, and hope they'll deign to listen to us."
OOC:
Leif is ready.
Mar 15, 2024 9:23 pm
Not the work of bandits... Cyrus sounds relieved. You are right Leif, we should get going.

Fire could be the thing... he mutters and heads over to the small cooking flame. He takes out the wooden amulet devoted to Gesmer that he was working on this morning. He holds it over the fire and lets the surface char black. Yes this is right
While the others are getting ready for the journey, he is burning his amulet until it is black. Still smoking he puts it on.

I am ready

As you all leave town you can see that a crowd has begun to gather around the Elder's home. Some of the faces you recognize from the stay, others you don't.

The Innkeeper, a Gallus woman, gives you all 5 days of rations (enough to make it to Winnowing Reach), stopping to thank Cyrus speficially for the help earlier. Leif's parents see him off as well giving him the affection they usually do when he leaves after a visit. Cara and Ardwyn stand in front of the crowd and give you all a final goodbye before you leave.

The road to Alderheart runs through Winnowing Reach. The Reach is 5 days away through the forest road or 2 days quicker if you cut through the dangers of the forest.

"Urrrgghh..." Leif drowned out her talking as his father laughed.

Finally, goodbyes were said, Leif was happy to get back to his companions. Charun had suggested taking the shortcut, and Leif nodded his head. "Shortcut is more dangerous, but there are five of us, how bad can it be?" He knew he was tempting the fates for saying such thing, but Leif was a contrarian in that way. "Surely no one would dare cross us with you around, eh Charun? I know the woods well, as does Cyrus I think, we should definitely brave it."

Leif always enjoyed a trek through the woods, and he had to force himself to stay focused on the task at hand instead of being distracted by the beautiful blue sky and the flutter of the butterflies. The thought of bandits nearby kept him in check easily enough—when his mind didn’t wander away from such thoughts. Besides, he had four wonderful companions! He snapped a long fern and chewed on it.

Bow and arrow out, and his trusty sickles always nearby, Leif made a good showing of his skills. He was glad to be carrying his weight on this seemingly momentous task.

"I think you’re right, Cyrus. This will be a grand adventure. Perhaps they’ll write a wonderful play about us! Ooh, I wonder who would play my part…"

The night draws to a close without incident.

When you awake, the rock that you were near casts a long shadow over the spot you are camped. The low sun in the south east hitting the rock in such a way that your group is in its shadow. The moss covers the rock fairly thoroughly. Birds chirp happily as morning dawns.
Mar 20, 2024 8:29 am
PARAN: What a beautiful morning, even the birds sing of our adventure!

GORGI: What’s got you all chirpy?

PARAN: Hoards of gold, a beautiful princess, and glory all await us!

GORGI: Monsters chasing us, blades at our necks, danger at every turn!

PARAN: What’s got you all grumpy?

GORGI: Death, Paran! Death! We’re literally going into a place called Mount Death!

—The Last Quest

Leif woke up for the last watch, the sleep in his eyes pretty much nonexistent, so excited he was at their undertaking. He sat and watched as the sun rose over the horizon, and quietly packed up while the others rose.

The birds’ chirps reminded him of a scene from one of his favorite plays and brought a smile to his face. The strange rock in the distance couldn’t dampen his spirit the way it dampened their spot with its shadow.

"Everyone ready for another day of traveling?" One could hear the smile in his voice.

Whisteling a jaunty tune about "Uncle Sandro" and the devastating example he gave with his life, Sherry springs up ealry and has her things packed up in no time. As there is no fire, her breakfast consists of an apple and a bite out of the bread she so cleverly got hold of yesterday. If anyone asks she would share some.

Mar 21, 2024 7:59 pm
As you remove the moss coverings you see that there is a carving of Four arrows, in a circle of ivy, forming a compass like shape. You can tell by the orientation that the compass is facing correctly.

This is a shrine to the Amaranthine Reya, The Explorer.

My stomach hurts. You guys go ahead without me.
Cyrus is not looking well, but he will manage and urge you on your mission.
Mar 21, 2024 8:55 pm
"Well, looks like we're heading in the right direction." Leif closed his eyes and paid a moment of silence out of respect, and then urged everyone to move on.

He looked at Cyrus worryingly, but nodded his understanding.

As the groups starts out from camp Cyrus will smile at the group.

As the party leaves and begin to travel, a gust of wind comes through the trees and around the rock. The leaves wistfully flow around the rocks and through the trees. Some of the leaves blow past Leif and circle him twice before blowing off into the distance.

Mar 21, 2024 11:26 pm
OOC:
We will start travel for the day. Any descriptions of how you are traveling would be good, but otherwise I will start the next scene tomorrow
Mar 22, 2024 12:14 am
Leif reaches out his hand at the fluttering leaves. A profound calmness envelops his whole being as the leaves blow off into the distance. "I have been blessed..." He said, as if in awe.

After a moment, he dusts himself off and takes the vanguard, scouting ahead as the previous day. His mind fears for Cyrus, hoping nothing but the best for his oldest of friend. They've just recently been reacquainted, and Leif hopes to see him again soon. He wipes away the momentary gloominess, cheered up by another beautiful day. He hopes it remains that way.
OOC:
How many more days are we expecting before we reach the destination?
Mar 22, 2024 12:17 am
OOC:
Winnowing Reach is 2 more days of travel. With how the road winds, you will cross the main road during this day of travel. Then a full woodland trek on the last day. Taking the woods shortened this from 5 days of total travel to 3
Mar 22, 2024 1:03 am
Charun will work to clear the stone of moss a bit more then flaps his wings to create gusts of wind to further clear the shrine. Then he ofers a prayer for their quick and successful arival to where they need to be.
OOC:
Not RAW but he will attempt to use Gust barrier and place it right along the surface of the shrine to scrub it clean with a bit of wind power.. :)
[ +- ] Gust Barrier (cantrip*s)
Charun will march at the back to bring up the rear. He will continue his efforts to get an ariel perspective as opportunity arises to allow him to launch from a higher starting point He keeps a watchful eye on their back trail as they move along

Sorry to see her friend staying behind, Sherry pats Cyrus on the shoulder and whispers: "It was good meeting you again black beak. Maybe we share tales over a cold one next time, we cross paths?" and winks at him grinning. Perhaps this could cheer him up a little? For birdfolk Cyrus has always been good company.

Cleaning away the bushes with the others, the mapbach is pleasantly surprised to recognize the sign of Reya, the Amaranthine of wind. The one she feels closest to herself.

Standing next to Leif, the white furred girl stays a bit longer than everybody else in uncharacteristic, quiet contemplation. This journey may not offer much of outward exploration. Traveling on well trodden paths back to the place she came from. But ... on the other hand? She is a different person now from the girl that ran away. And still lost. So this forgotten shrine could be a sign of a new journey. A new beginning. That would be ... nice?

What serious thoughts! - Sherry chides herself and briskly turns away to follow behind the others with her swift feet. Passing the nosey luma, she shows him her pink tongue in a display of defiance: "You bring up the rear - I know, I know."
Mar 22, 2024 7:21 pm
The wind and leaves that surrounded Leif also swirl around Sherry and Charun in this moment with a single flower landing at each of their feet.

Mar 22, 2024 9:15 pm
Knowing that no all are as close to the Amaranthine Charun accepts the blessing with a smile. As they set out he struggles not to tease Sherry to lighten her mood. Growing up with several siblings he often got himself into trouble this way. Luckily the Perch guard taught him to control this impulse and realize that not all could find joy in the chaotic play that often got the Luma into trouble with others. Sighing he goes back to humming a song in his head absentmindedly as he takes car to do a good job and not get distracted, again. Luckily the simple task is not too odious and the occasional opportunity to stretch his wings keeps him engaged, mostly.
Focus, scan, liste, . . . I love the sound of the wind in the leaves . . . Look back, wow have we already come that far, what time is it, I wonder how much longer, . . Focus
Mar 23, 2024 3:33 am
Leif continues on, happy to be carrying his weight. He daydreamed of fulfilling a grand mission, and having plays made based on his accounts. He’d then realize he hadn’t been paying attention for a while, and focused to the task at hand again.
Mar 23, 2024 11:53 am
Hurin walks in silence focusing on the dancing shadows of tree branches. His mood lightens as they travel further, recalling his memories as a child. Even the noise of the forest, nearly deafening in contrast to the peace of the night, is welcome. As they trek further he takes out a crude chunk of wood that looks to be the beginnings of a star.

"I've spent little time in Winnowing Reach, just a few brief stops here and there. My father dealt little with the slime industry but I hear it has been quite the boon for the area."
Mar 23, 2024 4:37 pm
As the group is traveling through the woods a part of your path will intersect the main road. A little faster travel here while still taking the most direct path.

As you go some rain clouds appear overhead but you continue forward. You hear voices up ahead...

Four hooded figures are gesturing violently at a crumpled body on the ground, while another is leaning against a nearby tree. A small hand-cart stacked high with bags and boxes of various sizes stands nearby. One of the hooded figures goes to the cart and unceremoniously sifts through the packages, leaving fallen bundles strewn on the road.

As you approach the four strangers who were gesturing at the body, you can see the pointed faces of mapach under the hoods. Two male and two female mapach, each wearing worn leather armor and a short sword on their belt. The one leaning against the tree, an intimidating vulpin female, is lightly armored and wears an ornate sword on her hip. She seems to be hanging back, letting her subordinates do all the work.

You hear a whimpered "Help me" from the creature laying on the road, but you can’t make out their features. The mapach female, still standing near the fallen body, puts her hands on her hips and says to the party, "All right folks, nothing to see. Move along if you know what’s good for ya."
Mar 23, 2024 5:06 pm
Charun sighs as this distraction from their important mission but replies cheerfully But he asked for help. As a servant of the Amaranthine I am bound to give aid. Surely you can have no qualms about me helping a fellow traveler.
Let me talk with him and then we can discuss any further what to do next.

Also stepping forward, Sherry feels the exciting tingle of possible violence up in the air. Bandits robbing some poor shmuck on the road. But with people like Leif around not for long, that's for sure. Maybe there is something to be done about a little blood less spilled?

The mapbach girl tosses her billowing cloak in an impressive gesture over her shoulder, revealing her well-equipped swordbelt. "Hey Malandros!" she greets them in Thieves' Cant. "Let me tell you: This is not a good day for some gnbenen." Letting a telling gaze fall left an right of her Sherry continues in a overly amiable, extremely sweet way that may have certain folks pick up their ears: "My fraynd are nit bakant far zeyer breythartsikeyt. You vest beser geyn."

Sugar-sweet she continues to smile, before giving a mock salute: "Travel savely!"
OOC:

Please move Sherry up to G4

I imagine her tone a little bit like this.

-- Translation --
Hey fellow people of a certain profession! Let me tell you: This not a good day for some harmless stealing. My friends aren't known for their forbearance. You'd better get going.

Edit: *nirg* It was a persuasion roll - the modifier is correct. Sorry for the mix-up.

Leif approached cautiously. Every part of him was screaming "rush in and rescue a fellow in need of help!" Certainly, that's what all the heroes do in his favorite plays, but when it came to it, discretion is the better part of valor, that's the quote that popped in his head. He couldn't even remember which play it was from, must be one of those forgettable ones, but with his nerves fritzing and his heart thundering, the words rang more true to him than all those other bravado plays he recalled.

As Charun and Sherry talked to the bandits, Leif put away his bow. It was good for hunting game, but these bandits looked like they meant business. He recalled that day he was left for dead, and a quiet rage simmered inside him, but all he did was take out one of his sickle instead, and picked at his fingernails with it, putting on the bored non-threatening persona.

The bandits look at each other as they are spoken to then at the vulpin in the back.

toll. she says to her men. Never leaving her relaxed position.

They then turn back to the group smiling...

you heard her...2gp each plus the merchant and we leave
Mar 23, 2024 10:21 pm
Charun is incensed at the bandit tactics but would rather not risk their mission or the merchant. Turning he looks to look at Sherry as she seems to be more familiar with how to handle this.
Mar 23, 2024 10:36 pm
Hurin moves a little forward to E4 and tries to appeal solely to the mapachs, hoping some may share his faith.

This is no way to live. Do you not feel the tension and hear the whispers? The warnings of danger? Leave this person to our care and be on your way.
Mar 23, 2024 10:41 pm
Leif looked to Charun. He was the biggest of them, or more importantly, the most armored, but the luna looked over to Sherry instead of engaging them. These bandits were tolling them after they’d beaten some poor merchant! Caution can rightly take a back seat.

Sherry might speak their cant, but Leif carried the only currency that paid off bullies, and they’re minted in steel. He swiftly stepped to the nearest bandit, unhooking his second sickle as he did so. He slashed with the first sickle, then followed through with the momentum and attacked with the other. Strike first, strike last, that was a mantra he could get behind.
OOC:
Sorry, if a 20+ persuasion didn’t persuade them, Leif wasn’t gonna wait around for them to make the first move. Hilarious rolls results though 😂

Leif was too feverish, his mind overtly focused on the attack that all his training and calmness evaporated. His attacks were clumsy and missed, and a blade gashed his arm. It hurt. It really hurt! Now the real thing came, it felt even worse than he imagined from all those plays he watched, on account of death actually staring him in the face. If he wasn't careful, death would snatch him from the ground sure as the sun would rise on the morrow.

He squeaked involuntarily, sidestepped and breathed to gather himself, and with fierce determination went on the offensive once more.

With his opponent down, and the bandit gang quickly turning to the losing side, Leif took a quick stock of the situation. The bandit fighting Charun looked near death, while the vulpin fighting Sherry looked confident for someone about to face them completely outnumbered.

Leif closed in to flank Charun’s opponent, slashing at them, before dashing back out to flank the vulpin. His sickles whirled in hands, like a reaper come for the harvest. The plays made the heroes look so heroic, but taking lives didn’t feel particularly heroic to Leif even as he danced with his blades.

Oof, my bad. It’ll just have to be main hand on the bandit, and offhand on the vulpin then.

The bandit won’t hve Favored Foe on it, so it’ll be 5 dmg.

I assume a 13 won’t hit the vulpin, but if it does 7 dmg.

Sorry for the confusion! Such a weird/arbitrary DMG rule to not allow a weaker hand to lead an attack.
OOC:
modifiers dont change on the targeted at attacks so lets say 13 at B1 and 25 at BC. So hits all around.

The rule is odd sometimes, and most of the time doesnt come into play.

Bandit dead, BC hit.

And yes your turn. Will post results of attack soon

The bandits Leif strikes goes down as he whirls to the vulpin captain and his blade makes purchase with its target.

Sherry then comes around with her blades and strikes the bandit well on both her strikes. The vulpin looks wounded.

Hurin directs the pulse of purple energy to Leif, casting healing word as a BA. In the same motion he turns to the vulpin. He mouths the words of his cantrip, each syllable becoming a whisper that grows into a cacophony of sound culminating in one ominous note.
OOC:
Healing word to Leif as a BA followed by toll the dead cantrip on the vulpin as his action. The vulpin will need to make a DC13 WIS save or take 1d12 nec dmg.

Hurin will move to the merchant, intent on healing if need be. He'll touch their shoulder to see if they can be roused.

"You're safe now. We mean only to help you."
Mar 27, 2024 10:18 pm
Leif let out a frustrated scream--an angry squeak, really--as the vulpin slid down his blade. It didn't have to end this way, but of course it did. Bandits! His face twisted with disgust.

Hurin looked like he was tending to the merchant, so Leif quickly knelt down to check for a pulse on the vulpin, ensuring it was dead, before moving on to the others to see if anyone could be saved.

"My whiskers, that was close! Thank you all for protecting me and my cart." The merchant stands up finally and brushes off her trousers, this is when the party can clearly see her face. A small cat-like figure stands before them.

Looking down her left arm with disgust, Sherry notices the thin red line that the Vulpin had cut into her. She had to get quicker! But maybe it would leave a nice scar. She would look indeed splendider with it. Dangerous!

Instead of binding and comforting the mapach girl concentrates on the plundering. Swiftly she turns the bags and boots inside out, while searching for something to life on in the following days.

Looking at the dead mapachs, she sadly shakes her head. Just some poor misguided guys trying making a not so honest living. What a bleak day.
As everybody starts to pay attention to the elurian. Sherry walzes of to the bandit she had knocked out. Sighing, the former highway-woman opens the bindings of Charun and tosses them angrily in the direction of the armor wearer.

She crouches down, splashing a little water in the mapach's face and lightly slaps him until his eyes flutter open.

"Well... not your day, ain't it?" Sherry starts slowly in a low, comforting voice, allowing him time to orientate. "If you want to thank me for preserving your life: spit something worthwhile.

If not: on you go and consider something else to earn for your loved ones. You live by the sword, you die... you get it, right?"

The former outlaw would love hearing something of a hidden treasure, a meeting of bandit captains, or the most recent rumor. But even if this miserable shmuck doesn't know anything valuable, the white furred Sherry would make sure that this one goes free unmolested and free of charge. It was bad enough, that the others had to die.

Leif watched Sherry unbound the remaining living bandit with a mixture of anger, relief, and disgust. He waited until the mapach finished reacting to Sherry’s inquiries, then with the flat side of his sickle he smacked the mapach’s cheek a couple of times until he looked Leif in the eyes.

"You run across any bandits out there, you tell them what happened here—four dead bandits and you get to run along free on account of our mercy so you can spread the news: these woods belong to good folks now."

With a twirl, Leif hooked his sickles back onto his belt and took out his bow and arrow once more. His blood was still flowing foul on account of killing. He thought he might retch the way some farmboy heroes do after their first kill in the plays he watched, but now things are settled, Leif figured the bandits weren’t worth that much grief. He wondered if maybe something was broken inside him where the Amaranthine put mercy in a jerbeen. Leif shook his head and forced a smile on his face. Fake it til you feel it.

He walked over to the strange merchant they’d rescued, unsure of what to make of her. I hope she doesn’t eat me, he thought, but aloud he said, "I’m Leif, pleasure to meet you."

That was more like it. That’s what heroes do, right? Rescue folks and talk nicely to them. Sure it was, but Leif’s mood turned black again as he offered the merchant his hand and saw it was stained with blood.

Stopping Leif right after the first smack, Sherry shakes her head vehemently, while laying her paw on his weapon. "You do this to yours, that one - he is mine." she states in an ice cold, not ready to back down, tone. At least that she had learned the last few years.
What a twat! Cutting their negotiations short, starting the fight, spilling all the humblefolk blood. And now? Even mishandling her prisoner! She would love to give Leif a good shake, to bring him to his senses. But this, most likely, would result in more bad blood. And of blood at least, she had seen her fair share today.

The mapach bandit sits there shocked looking at the interaction between Sherry and Leif.

How else am I to live? my home was burnt to the ground by fires and those in Alderheart wouldn't let me or anyone else take refuge there. I am just trying to find a way to make by. I promise I will cause none of you trouble if you let me go.

Meanwhile Hurin notices that in the gear that was pulled from the bandits, the bandit captain's sword seems newer and in better condition than any of the other gear. It has a rose insignia on the pommel and is much more ornate than you would expect.

Charun replies to Eliza somewhat distractedly as he listens to the conversation with the bandit It may be possible for you to accompany us at least to the next settlement. I will talk with my companions. I suggest you get ready to move out.

With a heavy heart, Sherry listens to the story of the mapach. One she only knows too well. Those birdfolk-people of Alderheart... nothing had changed as it seems.

With a nod in the right direction, the freshly baked adventurer sends the bandit away: "Go to Meadowfen, they need honest people there. Even more so, people who know how to wield a sword." With their patrol gone, the Mapach would get a suitable place to prove himself in the nice village. This could be beneficial for both sides.

But just to be clear: "Always remember what my friend said: These woods belong to the good folks now. Don't you ever let us catch you go astray. Ever." she adds coldly, to remind the bandit, that all of this could undeniably have ended very bleak for him.

Turning to Leif, if this requires a discussion, Sherry raises a questioning eyebrow.

If not, even better. The mapach girl is ready to collect her share of the loot and move on.
Mar 28, 2024 7:33 pm
Hurin will turns the ornate sword over in his hand.

"It's a fine weapon but of no use to me. Perhaps it will suit one of you? As for the merchant, I see no reason why she shouldn't accompany us to Winnowing Reach.

He will pack up the rest of the items, taking note of what was found.
OOC:
Would we want a separate party fund to keep track of the items? Not surehow everyone wants to do it.
Mar 28, 2024 7:48 pm
OOC:
Sherry and Leif, do a history check if you can.

However you want to split the gear left behind. Seems like, barring a Leif objection on letting the bandit go we will move forward shortly :)
Mar 28, 2024 8:19 pm
Walking over to the bandit Charun simply asks Where did you come from? If you home was destroyed then how is destroying others livelihood making yours any better?
There are better ways to overcome a trial than to pass your difficulties onto others. The next time you have a choice that affects others think about how you want others to treat you before acting solely out of self interest.
. And Charun tosses the thief back his purse and coin. Use that to make a life, not take more.

As Sherry views the sword that Charun holds, she recognizes the insignia as a sign of being a Lieutenant in the greater Bandit Coalition. Specifically one that would be under the direct orders of the Bandit leader Benna Serridan. While the blade is not magic, just having the blade will make all bandits of a rank lower than captain will have disadvantage on any rolls made to oppose Charisma (Intimidation) ability checks made by that character.

Leif clucked his tongue at Sherry and scowled, but he simply shrugged and walked away after saying his piece. Using misfortune to prey upon others was no excuse, but Leif wasn't going to murder someone unarmed.

The foul mood followed Leif like a shadow, and he was glad to continue being the scout, separating himself from the others. He still wasn't sure what to make of the merchant, but she seemed harmless enough.

Sharing her thoughts on the blade, Sherry reluctantly asks Charun - as he was the one entering into the conversation with the bandits: "Do you want it? It may provide you with some leverage when we meet someone like them again." He would just have to carry the weapon, not even have to wield it. For a birdfolk-person he seems surprising down to earth.

She herself is satisfied with her scimitars for the moment. Only the gold seems to be of interest for the mapach.
Mar 29, 2024 3:09 pm
Slightly surprised, Charun is uncertain whether to accept it or not and explains. Thanks, but . . . um, well you see I used to be with the Perch Guard. I'm not exactly the best at pretenses and deception. So what if someone know my history sees me with this? Wouldn't this be better with you? He continues to explain knows it may be useful but is not sure about when or how best to use it.
If the others want him to take it he will place it on his hip at the back so the pommel can be reached but is not normally visible.
