The Grayhaven City Gates

Grayhaven is the largest city you've ever seen, just judging by the amount of traffic passing in and out of the massive gates. There's even activity in the sky, as a flight of three hippogriffs soar past overhead. The huge barred doors are swung wide open to merchants and travelers of all types, who pass through the massive walls after careful review by the watchful city guard.

Dugal guides the caravan into a wide dirt lot off to the side of the gates, where a dozen other wagons are already being unloaded. Immediately the tumult of activity begins, voices coming from all directions. The merchants of the caravan hop down and are pressed upon by prospective porters eager to be hired to take their wares in through the gates while city officials press through the crowds to evaluate the goods and assess the appropriate tariffs. Some of the goods are destined to be sold in the Market Square, others are earmarked for delivery to parties in the city who ordered them, while still others are directed to ships bound for other ports.

As each wagon is unloaded, Gavath leads the team off to one side, into an area that Dugal has paid to be set aside for his caravan. Then the half-orc unhitches the horses and leads them off to a nearby paddock where he pays to have them guarded while rest and graze for the days that it will take for Dugal to find merchants bound for Mara. Each driver sweeps out their wagon, then gets in line at the gates, waiting for entry into the big city. Flint's job is easy enough, as Findal was a tidy passenger and there's little mess to clean. So Flint offers to help clean Belany's wagon further before he joins the line at the gates.

As the merchants finish their negotiations, they return briefly to say their goodbyes and to pay Dugal the rest of his fees.

Adran, as he waits to see just what happens and (hopefully!) be accepted into the city offers a sincere and heartfelt goodbye to each of the merchants he helped guard. When Belany comes around, he smiles and adds a thank you.

And while he may miss their company... the elf has an entire city before him. It makes Mara look like the dead-end hole in the wall that it was. The sheer size of Grayhaven is borderline overwhelming. So much potential... but he has work to do.

Elowin tries and fails not to gape in wonder at the huge city. This is what she wanted, see this, be part of this. There is even flying freaking creatures in the sky.
She bites her lip and tries to contain her giddiness.

I can't wait to see the city. Can we go now?

Morik's grin, hardly ever missing in general, was in full bloom as he looked upon the city, the soaring towers, and hippogriffs in the sky. His companions seemed to be in similar awe. Morik slapped Elowin's back. "We're in the big city now, eh?"

Bram settles up his payment with Dugal. Twenty five gold suns, for a job…done.

I’m glad we’ve had the time, stout friend. I hope we can cross paths again soon, in business and in friendship.

Bidding kind goodbye to his caravaners, our fightery fellow turns his attention to his companions. Yes, friends. A big city, indeed. We have work ahead of us, yes? I have…questions of my own, perhaps our contact can help me.

Belany's lips twitch in an almost-smile as she thanks the party for rescuing her wares. She also thanks Flint for his help with her wagon, and then offers money to Findal again for the cleaning his magic provided. "No, no, no - I wouldn't dream of it!"

Swelvie blows a kiss in Turighe's direction. "Maybe I'll see you again sometime..." Turighe blushes and bows low: "It would be my pleasure." Princess frowns at the redheaded merchant's back as she sashays into the line at the gates. A wealthy noble delegation approaches with much pomp, carrying a palanquin escorted by heavily-armed guards. They stop, and the person within the palanquin address kar'Javon. The dwarf bows low and climbs into the palanquin without a word. Tesko alone has not hired any porters, and before too long, an armed cadre of heavily-armored warriors bearing crossbows arrive, escorting a team of black-clad porters. Tesko gestures, the porters heft his sealed crates, and they depart, surrounded by the warriors looking in all directions, clearly wary of attack by the Five Guys or their agents.

Findal pays the dwarven caravan master his fee and looks up at the city walls. "Exciting, isn't it?" he crows in his piping voice. Dugal turns to the party and hands 25 golden suns to each of you: Adran, Bramlin, Elowin, Gunter, Morik, and Princess. But as Princess leaves to talk with Turighe and Gunter bids his farewells, Dugal addresses the gnome: "You've been a good traveling companion, and I hope that you're happy with the services I've provided." Showing an awareness of your agreement to escort Findal, he's clearly speaking so that the four of you can also hear: "So I feel it's fair to give you a warning. As I was settling accounts with the officials, I heard some of the guards say that they're looking for gnome wizards, to take them in for questioning. I don't know why, but they've got the magecatchers out." He smiles then, the rare expression creasing his face in unaccustomed ways. "I know you can't have done anything wrong, but you might want to avoid any misunderstandings..."

Findal nods and grips Dugal's arm in gratitude too deep for words. Dugal nods. Then he looks each of you in the eye in turn and adds: "I can try to give you a few minutes more by keeping the officials busy for a bit longer. Good luck!" The dwarf hurries off and starts to loudly complain to the customs agents and his guards about how high the tariffs have become.

Findal turns to you, his protectors. "This sounds like it will be more work than I thought. If they're looking for me, that may mean that someone has learned about the artifact and Tykus' research. It'll be best to avoid attention until we can enter the city, meet Tykus, and figure out what's happened."

There is a big line of people waiting to get in, but the guards seem to be letting people through with only cursory questions. As you watch, Gunter is let through the checkpoint and enters the city. Princess, who never accepted Findal's offer of employment either, is busy flirting with Turighe (and has made noises that she might sign up to guard the caravan on the return journey).

How do you want to get Findal into Grayhaven?
OOC:
Note: despite the name, the "magecatchers" in question are just guards who are trained for combatting/capturing wizards, not ones who are good at hunting or finding magic users.

"Could you not discard or secret away anything that might identify you as a magic user, and when they ask if you do magic simply tell them "no?""

Adran's suggestion is simple and straightforward... but deception often is. The question is, would it work?

The money will have been divided before you arrive at Grayhaven. Each PC could then look for a way to make their wealth more portable if they wish.

But regarding the division...Surely it would divide by 5 or 6, not 4, since Gunter was with you and Princess was not - it's really on the group as to whether you cut Princess in (divide by 6) or not (divide by 5). But Gunter would insist on his share.

Dividing by 5 would net each PC 6 krugerrands and 460 bits, with 2 krugerrands left over. Any of the merchants could "break" those 2 krugerrands into 20 argents if none of the PCs can, and that would mean 4 argents per PC.

It's up to you to decide whether you want to have included Princess or not, but you should figure that out before continuing.

Findal
Findal spreads his hands helplessly at Morik's accusation. "I am, at heart, a peaceful gnome, and my extensive studies of magic have not included learning spells that harm. I do not claim to be a hero, nor do I aspire to be more than a scholar. I hope you don't think the worse of me for it." He grins lopsidedly. "If I was able to protect myself, I might not have hired all of you!"

He nods at Elowin. "And I appreciate the impressive magic that you have at your fingertips, ready to aid me in battle. Let us hope it doesn't come to that!" Pointing to Adran, he adds: "We might be able to avoid conflict through simple deception, as you suggest." Findal tucks his book into his bag along with his hat, tousles his hair and slings the bag over his shoulder like a sack. He's still clearly a gnome, but now he looks a bit like a well-dressed-but-bedraggled gnome porter, or maybe a teeny gnome merchant who couldn't afford a porter carrying his own wares into the city.

Unless you have something else you'd like to try (to use a different skill or ability) or want to do something to add to the gnome's disguise (to gain ADV), we'll proceed with Adran's plan of deceiving the guards.

If we're ready, which one of you will go ahead of Findal and roll the Deception check?
OOC:
Hearing nothing further, let's say the guards who participated in the final fight divided the money 5 ways. So Adran, Bramlin, Elowin, Gunter, and Morik each have 6 krugerrands, 4 argents, and 460 bits in addition to the 25 krugerrands you just received from Dugal.

Adran will shake his head and take Findal's bag. "Let me carry this," he says quietly. "As an artificer, having books of magic and magic-adjacent information would not seem out of place. I know many of us dabble in mysticism in its various forms, but I feel book learning is more believably my area."
Mar 28, 2024 7:58 am
Morik continued to glare at Findal for a moment longer, then guffawed and slapped Findal’s back. "I just had ta make sure you weren’t holding out on us and could disguise yourself. Adran’s got a great plan. Let’s give it a try!"

The party gets in line with the gnome. Up ahead, several guards are stopping people as they enter the gates. You see that the guards wear livery emblazoned with the symbol of a fortified harbor and rampant goat, which you all now recognize as the insignia of the Duke of Grayhaven. It's carved into the lid of the sealed mahogany box that Adran still carries. They peer at each group, ask them a question or two, and then let them into the city. But then, about ten people ahead of the heroes, the guards suddenly lower their spears, cornering a gnome who gives a little shriek and looks in vain for a way to escape. One of the guards grabs him and leads him off to one side, into a little guardhouse inside the gates. They are accompanied by one of the magecatchers, ready to leap into motion should the gnome attempt anything that resembles casting.

Findal
Findal Dinfizzle Findazzle smiles nervously and mutters to Morik: "He was by himself. Obviously a wizard, too! We've got each other, we'll be fine."

You have just a few moments before the guards turn to your group. Who will roll the CHR Deception check to get past the guards? Adran's carrying of Findal's bag has reduced the DC to 11.

Mar 29, 2024 1:46 am
The guard puffs up a little at Elowin's smile, and her calling him "mister" like he's somebody important. "Oh! Well, I, uh...we don't have a guild for all merchants, but there are many guilds with halls near the Merchant Square. What sort of work do you do...?" The other guards laugh at him. "Hey, Lugo, why don't you leave that poor girl and her little sister alone? She doesn't want to talk to you! Ha-ha-ha!" Lugo flushes and mutters "Welcome to Grayhaven!" before hurriedly turning away. "WHAT? She asked me a question!" "Yeah yeah, and you always need to answer the questions of pretty girls...!"

The party makes their way past the guards with no further inspection as they continue to rib Lugo while processing the next group entering the city. Everyone is relieved, although both Adran and Findal are also a little offended: "Sister! Little sister?! What did they mean by that?" Then they see each other and laugh with relief and embarrassment. "You thought they meant you??"

There is a lot of foot traffic in the small plaza here. Cheap taverns and stalls set up to sell all kinds of stuff to new arrivals fill your vision, and hand-carts and horse-drawn wagons trundle past in multiple directions, carrying goods, people, or waste. The smell of the sea is vaguely discernible under the heady aroma of many foods, spices, perfumes, smoke, many bodies, petrichor, and grime. Hawkers shriek advertisements for various wares and services. A main avenue leads further into the city, while side streets open off of the plaza in half a dozen directions. Dogs trot past, darting between people's legs, sniffing for offal or other edible scraps. Morik and Elowin notice that there are various icons in evidence, both around people's necks and in little shrines festooned with flowers and ribbons. Though most people carry
small knives or daggers for everyday use, Bramlin notes that there are only a few other warriors in the crowd: mostly bodyguards, the guards with their spears, but also a couple of bravos with rapiers at their hips. Pigeons and gulls vie for the skies above the rooftops, while far above the flight of hippogriffs drifts in lazy circles.

Elysia and Eozindra arrive in the plaza from Tanner Street just as the party stops to take their bearings. What brings them to the plaza?

OOC:
That’s what I’m here for!
Emerging into the plaza from the branching pathway of Tanner Street, Eozindra prances into the bustle with all the lighthearted gaiety of a child carrying cake and no guardian to hinder the consumption. In her usual garb, she would blend in with the majority of a crowd; wearing plain leather breeches in a dark caramel color, a simple but billowing-sleeved blouse cinched at the waist in a matching leather bodice, and a nondescript pale sage traveling cloak. She would blend in, that is, if it weren’t for the absolute lack of pigmentation across her skin and hair, catching every beam of the day’s sun filtering from above.

With a complexion to rival the cleanest porcelain, she has a tendency to stand out in a crowd without even trying. The wild and unrestrained length of platinum-silvery curls that swim around her narrow shoulders as she gleefully skips along does nothing to hinder the beacon-like aura she exudes. The other obvious radiating sense from the albino half-elf is simple, pure, unadulterated joy; this day is a gift to her, as was the one before, and as will be the next.

Pulling the flute she always carries from her belt, she gives in to the urge to spread a soft and melodic sense of happiness among the crowd. Out for a day of busking, she was already prepared to break out in a street performance once the perfect space had been located. Though they haven’t decided where to set up just yet, the bard felt inspiration running through her like an overflowing tankard of ale and could do nothing to dam the flow from her lips.

Still keeping pace with her ever-present and best-loved companion, Eozindra breathes a gentle dancing tune as she and Elysia tread onward for a day of improvisation and delight.
Mar 29, 2024 5:12 am
Looking around, there is no sign of Gunter. But the party of five - Findal, Adran, Bramlin, Elowin, and Morik - and the pair - Eozindra and Elysia - all spot each other at the same time. Those that know each other recognize them immediately, both from distinctive appearance and distinguishing music signature.
Mar 29, 2024 7:37 am
She is still awestruck, it played into her favour with the guards, but now they are inside.
But the traffic, the noise, the energy that one could just dance to. The smell tho, is not as fantastic.

Oh! Hello! Elowin waves happily at Eozindra and Elysia. It's fantastic being in such a huge city and then you even spot a familiar face. Today is going to be a good day.

Elowin can feel her head is starting to spin from all the sensory inputs. As the two half-elves approach, she puts her hood up, and pulls out a few mint leaves to crush between her fingers. Just to introduce a better smell.
Mar 29, 2024 9:09 am
Morik couldn’t believe their luck. They just waltzed right in, thanks to Elowin’s charm and beauty, the guards were too infatuated with her to notice anything amiss. He grinned at Findal as they walked in.

The sights and sounds of the city truly filled him now, and his eyes moved around up down and everywhere in awe of the spectacle. He was a nature lover at heart, but this was a different kind of manmade beauty and wonder that even he appreciated.

His eyes did a double take, and his already overjoyed heart felt like it would burst at the sight of an old friend. "Eozindra!" He called out to her, his stubby legs bursting with speed to greet her.
Mar 29, 2024 7:32 pm
Not too enthralled by her own revelry to miss the sound of her name from afar, the pale half-elf’s tune comes to a sudden stop at the sound of a familiar voice. Glancing towards the gates, she catches sight of the dwarven man she had exchanged tales with over a table many months ago. She yelps with glee and launches off in her own sprint to meet the druid halfway, giving her own elated call, "Morieeee!" as she goes for a hug. "What are you doing here?!"
Mar 30, 2024 6:11 am
Pleasantly surprised to see familiar, friendly faces from Mara here in Grayhaven, the half-elves meet the rest of the party in the plaza.

But then there is a shriek of pain and a shout of alarm as a pair of horses pulling a carriage go wild. The driver is thrown from the buckboard and the carriage careens out of control down the road, straight at you.

Each PC must make a DEX saving throw, DC10, as the crazed horses plow through the crowd and people race to fling themselves out of the way.
Mar 30, 2024 7:35 am
Before Morik even has the chance to respond, Eozindra squeaks out a fearful yelp in harmony with the cacophony of the street chaos as she attempts to avoid the oncoming devastation.

Watching Zin with pure amusement, Elysia can’t help but enjoy herself and share in the inspiration she feels. By looking around the crowd, Sia can just tell that she’s going to make away with many a coin and trinket without detection, thanks to the busyness of the day.

visual opposite of her beloved companion, Elysia stands, her dark brown eyes scanning for her first target. Dressed in a fine, pale colored cloak she "borrowed" from someone too long ago, she hides her dark leather outfit. With a small smile across her face and skin light, yet slightly tanned from being in the sun, she is able to assume the appearance of being just another average person in the crowd.

Blowing a lock of her wavy, brunette hair that she didn’t pull up out of her face, she turns right as she sees a familiar face. Her smile widens at the sight of a familiar face. "Elowin, it is good to see you again! It has been ages!"

She notes her companion eagerly greeting someone she struggles to recognize when the jarring sound puts all her instincts on alert. Realizing that something is barreling toward them, Elysia does her best to not trip over herself as she attempts to get out of the way.

The driver of the carriage is barely hanging on to the side as the horses tear forward, panicked and out of control. Many people are screaming and throwing themselves out of the way, but you think you also hear a cry from inside the carriage as it bears down on you. Adran manages to leap to one side, but most of the others leap in the other direction...not far enough to get out of the way of the horses, who clip them as they gallop past. Those who failed the DC10 DEX save take 3 bludgeoning damage and will roll their attempt to get on the carriage (if they choose to) with DISADV.

As the carriage thunders past, you can see that if it isn't halted, it will trample others and crash soon thereafter, either into a stall or a building.
Any character who wishes to can attempt a DC10 STR Athletics check to grab the carriage as it passes and climb aboard.

The little gnome sage is clipped by one of the horses' hooves, and takes 3 bludgeoning damage, too.

ROUND ONE
OOC:
Initiative is not important at this stage, but I will track the event in rounds both because there is a time element and to keep track of PCs' actions.
Something panics the horses, and they begin their frantic charge, careening the fancy carriage they are drawing through the crowds just inside the eastern gates of Grayhaven. The driver, caught by surprise, is flung backwards when the team leaps forward, and barely manages to catch himself on the side. Someone inside the carriage yells with alarm. Findal, Eozindra, Elysia, Morik, and Bramlin each get battered by hooves as they leap clear, but Adran and Elowin clear out of the way with no damage. In the split-second after the horses pass, several party members heroically leap to grab onto the carriage. Adran manages to catch the carriage and hauls himself aboard; Bramlin tries to grab the carriage as well. His outstretched hand hooks onto some elaborate scrollwork and he is yanked off of his feet, too. Adran and Bramlin get themselves secure, then turn to help the driver, but the jounce as the carriage strikes another pedestrian dislodges the man, leaving the artificer and fighter alone on the buckboard, trying to take control of the team before it crashes. The crystal-clear voice of the albino half-elf Eozindra rings out with encouragement for Adran - "You can stop this!" - granting the artificer bardic inspiration.

Rolls

Bramlin's attempt to leap aboard DC10 - (1d20+6)

(8) + 6 = 14

Apr 2, 2024 4:58 pm
BEGINNING OF ROUND TWO

Adran draws upon his own magic (casting Guidance) and Eozindra's music to aid him as he grabs the reins and attempts to gain control of the team, but an astonishingly bad roll means that the reins are yanked back out of his hands. The frantic horses are bucking and leaping so much that the tongue of the harness threatens to snap. The edge of the carriage clips a seafood vendor's stall, smashing the wooden frame and sending various shellfish spilling out onto the street as several buckets are upended. Bramlin is going to make a grab for the reins, too. What are the rest of you doing?
OOC:
Adran and Bramlin are aboard the vehicle, which is now 60' away from the rest of the party. Everyone in the party can see that, if the carriage isn't stopped before then, it will crash into something at the end of round three: the horses are charging toward various buildings at the edge of the plaza.
Apr 2, 2024 7:11 pm
Adran will grab hold and lean forward to try and get the reigns back as well, hoping that if he and Bramlin work together they can stop this damnable carriage. To that end he will be whatever help he can be.
Apr 2, 2024 7:33 pm
Bram reaches his hands outward. Trying to grab at the runaway coach!
Stop, he exclaims instinctively!

ROUND TWO COMPLETED

Bramlin reaches for the reins as Adran drops them, but the horses do not mind his command!
OOC:
Getting control of the horses is an Animal Handling check, not Athletics. But the 5 will still fall short, as Bramlin's skill in Animal Handling is a +2.
Eozindra sprints after the carriage and sings to inspire Bramlin, too. Morik jumps in the air as a dwarf and lands as a horse, galloping after the crazed team. As an unladen equine, he is able to catch up to the horses hitched to the vehicle, but his first attempt to model calmness to them is unsuccessful.

ROUND THREE BEGINS
The person inside the carriage yells again: "WHAT'S HAPPENING?!" The whinnying, out of control horses knock one of the bravos to the ground, and he lays where he fell, out cold. Adran gets his hands on the reins to assist Bramlin, the two of them pulling together to try to get the horses to stop or at least steer away from the wall.
OOC:
Adran is using the Help action, which will provide ADV to counteract the DISADV from the panicked horses; if Bramlin chooses to roll an Animal Handling check, he will roll it as a straight 1d20+2 (and can choose to add the Bardic Inspiration die granted by Eozindra, 1d6). Morik is in the form of a horse, and may be able to communicate calm to the "fellow" horses (also Animal Handling). The DC is 12.
What do you each do?

Rolls

4th roll of 4 - (1d6)

Apr 2, 2024 11:06 pm
"The driver was thrown when the horses spooked! We're trying to stop them before more people are hurt!" Adran can't be too worried about the passenger though, the horses seem to be a more immediate concern.
Apr 2, 2024 11:06 pm
Falling short of the carriage, Eozindra presses her palms to the sides of her face in a moment of overwhelmed frustration. She frantically looks around for some method of stopping the carriage. Seeing nothing useful, she sprints after the runaway vehicle as fast as her legs can carry her and calls out again to the individuals attempting to slow the panicked horses, "Now! Now! Slow them down!"
OOC:
Aghhh I am so useless in this situation!

Using action to dash (30ft normal speed up to 60) and try to keep pace with this hot mess, inspiration dice for Bramlin this time: 1d6
Apr 3, 2024 12:23 am
Morik's eyes widened in alarm as he saw what's in the path of the carriage, and the accident that would occur if the horses didn't stop in time. He muttered a spell for some guidance, and then with uncharacteristic spryness, he leapt and transformed into a riding horse.

Later on, he'd recall that it was the first time he'd done it. The ability had been there for a while, just at the edge of his mind, but now came the time to do it, his mind reacted on instinct and just did it. It was quick, too quick to have felt any of the pain, though bruising and soreness would likely appear. But at the time, he thought of none of these things as he charged straight for the panicked horses.
OOC:
I don't think Morik got his turn in round 2. Can he use that round to Wild Shape into a riding horse (bonus action) to catch up? Can he use Animal Handling in riding horse form? If not, he'll need round 3 to transform back to normal form, and attempt it then.

EDIT: Good gods, will I ever roll high?

OK, I've updated the round two description to include Eozindra's sprint and Morik's transformation and first attempt to calm the horses.

Adran is on the runaway carriage, using his action on round 3 to help Bramlin.
Bramlin is on the runaway carriage, and hasn't declared an action for round 3 yet.
Elowin is in the plaza with Findal and Elysia. She hasn't declared an action for round 2 or 3 yet.
Elysia is in the plaza with Findal and Elowin. She hasn't declared an action for round 2 or 3 yet.
Eozindra has just caught up to the runaway carriage, sprinting. She hasn't declared an action for round 3 yet.
Morik is galloping next to the team of horses in horse form himself. He hasn't declared an action for round 3 yet.

Declare your actions for rounds 2 and 3 if you haven't already. At the end of round 3, the carriage will crash as the horses run full tilt into the wall if not prevented.

Start: Zin gets hit by the carriage.
Round one: Zin tries to catch the carriage (action), misses, and uses her bonus action to give inspiration to Adran. She doesn't move.
Round two: Zin runs after the carriage (move), dashes (action), and gives inspiration to Bramlin (bonus action).
Round three: ...?

OOC:
Yes, in this situation, characters can retry the same skill checks. We're rolling because there's a time element.
I figured that, as a horse, Morik would have ADV...which is counteracting the DISADV of the horses' complete panic.

Are you hurt mister Findal?
Apart from filling the horses with arrows, Elowin have very few options to mitigate the situation - so she sticks to the task they were originally giving. Escorting Findal to his friend and bring the box to the Duke.
Apr 3, 2024 12:55 pm
Round 2:

Elysia can't feel surprise at seeing Zin take off after the carriage. Now that she could, it wasn't strange to see the pale girl going everywhere she could. Without hesitation, she dashed after her, both refusing to let her go into a possibly dangerous situation alone and wanting to help any way she can. As she chased after the runaway carriage, she screamed out to the person inside, "You need to jump! Vacate the carriage!"
OOC:
I have a crazy idea for round three if the person doesn't jump. I feel like wanting to leap onto it and pull the person out before disaster could happen would require them to know where the person in the vehicle is so could I roll an acrobatics to leap inside to protect whoever is in there in the case of a crash?
Imma add a roll just in case the answer is yes. If I can't get around to checking the forum again for another day, I don't want to hold anyone up.

It'd be Acrobatics to leap off (as you are going to try to tuck and roll to avoid being hurt). Findal Dinfizzle Findazzle
Elowin stands protectively over Findal after helping him back to his feet. "I'll...I'll recover. That was a near thing!" The gnome replies, nodding in gratitude for the concern. Then he realizes that the others have run after the carriage. His jaw drops in amazement. "What are they doing??"
Apr 4, 2024 5:23 am
Eozindra's piping galvanizes the people in the plaza into further movement, and the crowd parts in front of the charging horses. Elysia calls to the passenger in the carriage, whose wild eyes stare out at her in alarm. Where once there was a dwarf, Morik is now a horse, cantering next to the horses, trying to exude a sense of calm and purpose to the panicked animals. On the buckboard, Adran and Bramlin together grab the reins and haul on them, leaning almost horizontally backwards. The bridles of the horses pull their heads back and they rear. As their hooves touch the cobblestones again, the momentum of the massive carriage pushes them a few steps further. But as the elegantly-dressed dwarf in the carriage pops open the door and prepares to leap trustingly into Elysia's arms, the vehicle finally comes to a stop less than a pace from the front door of a shop with the picture of a gleaming ball on a shingle hanging over it (in small letters below the picture it reads "Briny's Best Baubles" for those tourists who can read).

OOC:
As the immediate danger is in the past and the party has saved both the passenger and the carriage, we are no longer tracking rounds.

Argus Goldblood
The horses snort and stomp nervously, and as Findal and Elowin join the rest of the party, your gnome employer applauds: "Well done, everyone!" The dwarf passenger laughs in relief. "Yes! Ha-hah! You've saved me! I don't know what got into the horses; I would have been crushed under the wheels if I'd tried to leap clear or dashed to pieces if I'd stayed inside. But then you saved me! How can I repay you? Oh, but where are my manners?" He shifts the wooden case he holds in his arms so that he can execute a graceful and respectful bow. "I am Argus Goldblood, and I am in your debt." The driver comes running up and begin stammering an apology to Argus. The dwarf, well aware that the heroes are watching him, cuts off the driver's excuses. "Nonsense, man, nonsense. You had the good sense to get off when the horses panicked, as I should have done. If the horses are back under control as they seem to be, let's get back underway as soon as you're ready." The driver goes to the horses and begins checking them and their tack, readying the carriage for continuing their journey through the city.

Argus sets the case back in the carriage and gestures broadly to all of you. "Please allow me the satisfaction to reward you for your valiant service. Let me take you to my lodgings and treat you to one of the best meals in the city and see if there's any other way I can repay you for saving my life." He gestures inside the fancy carriage. "There's just enough room for all of us."

As you consider this offer, you notice that the Duke's guards are converging on the area to see the cause of the commotion. Findal ducks nervously behind Elowin to avoid attracting attention.
Apr 4, 2024 12:48 pm
Well thank you Master Goldblood. We would be delighted. Elowin ushers Findal into the carriage.
Apr 4, 2024 1:49 pm
"Thank you, good sir. I'll join you in a moment."

Turning to the driver, Adran points out the small bolt. "You keep the animal calm while I remove the bolt and heal the wound?"

Morik was stunned that the horses stopped in time, and immediately reverted back to his normal self, patting himself to ensure everything was transformed back in the right places, and then patting the horses to calm them. The cause of the panic became evident, and Morik whispered soothing words to the injured horse.

"Best get that out." He said to himself even as he yanked it free, rubbing the the wounded area as the magic of the earth coursed through his hand and into the wound, mending it gently.

Hesitation is the response Elysia has to the offer. Goldblood might be higher in society than she’d prefer to be around Eozindra or herself, she’s not sure yet. Seeing Zin looking around though, she waits to voice her rejection of the offer to see what Zin feels about the situation.
Apr 5, 2024 2:59 am
In a moment of quick decision-making, Eozindra takes stock of the approaching guards and proffered company. The half-elf moves to tuck her flute back into her belt, then notices an invisible errant boot lace. As she stoops to adjust her laces, she ensures that the hood of her robe flips carelessly over her head. When she arises, there is a subtle yet distinctive difference in the bard's appearance. No longer is her skin a pale, perfect porcelain, rather a fair milky complexion. Her hair, still wild and curls abounding, gives off the faintest hint of yellow when the sun hits it. Eyes, now a bright blue, shine happily over pale pink cheeks. She sneaks a wink to Sia and follows the troupe into the now-stilled carriage.
OOC:
Just a quick little Disguise Self while she is "tying her shoe" to be her same self, but no longer albino. As pale as a very fair-toned person might be. Basically just the subtlest shift so as to be able to pass a double check someone might do when looking for albinism characteristics.

Bram and Adran jump down from the buckboard, and after thanking Argus, Adran joins the shape-shifting Morik to examine the horse as the driver arrives. Between the two of them, they pull something out of the horse's flank and then heal the horse's wound. Adran palms the bolt, figuring that it's something he can examine at his leisure later, with some privacy. Elowin accepts Argus' invitation and ushers Findal into the carriage. Bram accepts the thanks of the fancy dwarf, and hops into the carriage also. The interior is lushly apportioned, with artistically carved scrollwork around the windows, cushions built into the seats, a miniature table attached to the floor, and several other decorations or features whose purpose is unclear. It's clearly a carriage meant to be hired by wealthy people. Findal sinks into one of the seats with a sigh. "This is quite an improvement over the wagon!" he beams, then claps a hand over his mouth, realizing that his piping little voice might give away that there is a gnome here.

Still outside, Morik helps the driver (who completely missed the druid's transformation into a horse and back again) finish harnessing the team - something Morik had much practice at during the caravan's journey, the many times he assisted Gavath - as Eozindra bends down and stands up again looking plainer, or at least somehow less striking. Adran has a momentary thought that the two half-elves, Elysia and Eozindra, suddenly look like two sides of the same coin, one dark-haired and mysterious, the other platinum-haired and ebullient. That impression passes after a moment like the sun passing behind a cloud. The driver is leading the horses around in a wheeling circle, repositioning the carriage so that it can proceed down the streets again. The Duke's guards are almost upon the group. It is not clear whether they heard the gnome or are just coming to see that everyone is unharmed after that dangerous near-crash.

Breathing a bit easier as a small smile meets Zin’s wink, Elysia links her arm with her fellow half-elf, gently leading her over to the carriage. "Go ahead and ascend into the carriage, dear. I’ll be but a moment." It was rare that she embraced her finer speech patterns, but with her nicer, stolen borrowed cloak on and the obvious signs as she peeks into the vehicle of wealth, she decides that embracing the "higher class" persona would possibly be a better use around this new person. At least until she had a better feel for him.

Keeping an eye on her surroundings, Elysia watches the guards that approach as she moves slightly away from the carriage door, prepared to either be the last person to enter or step in and deal with the guards knowing who else is currently hiding inside. While unknown he is to her, Sia isn’t one who likes the bullying of these select individuals.
Apr 5, 2024 7:48 pm
Morik finished helping with the horses, and went back to check on his companions. He noted guards on the way, and was glad he’d changed back to his normal form. It felt strange, shifting around, but he was excited to try to do it again.

The others had apparently been invited to dine with the rescued dwarf, and Morik was happy to accept the offer.
Apr 5, 2024 10:31 pm
It would almost seem rehearsed, how quickly Eozindra lined up her presentation with that of the established archetype Elysia laid out. The two communicated on a wavelength beyond comprehension; or maybe they just had lots of practice in setting each other up and following through in the spur of the moment. The now light-skinned half-elf patted the hand disengaging from her elbow after being assisted up the step and replied in a mirrored, eloquent cadence. "Of course, but please do not tarry long."

She smiles and finds a seat in the well-appointed interior and casts a pleased and entranced gaze upon the intricate detailing around the group. "Marvelous craftsmanship," she comments as she continues to examine the finer details of this mobile meeting place.
OOC:
Anything jump out regarding the interior? Any signs that might ring a bell to Zin or offer additional information about its current occupant?

The Ducal guards arrive and address the group, scanning for the person responsible. "You the driver?"
The man nods unhappily and points to Argus. "He hired my carriage..."
"I didn't ask you who hired the wagon, now did I?" the guard snaps. "What got into you that you drove so recklessly?"
The driver stammers: "I...Something spooked them, and they just went wild..." He looks at the team, which by now is totally calm and looking placid again. The guards seems focused entirely on the driver, and have not bothered looking at anyone in the carriage. They address Argus: "Sorry to bother you, kar.(*) Are you and your guests quite all right? Or shall we have to make an example of this incompetent?"
Argus frowns and considers the question. The driver wilts under his glare. "...no..." the dwarven scholar eventually replies, "These things happen, you know. He regained control very quickly. No harm done here." He gestures with a broad sweep of his arm. "But don't let us keep you from tending to anyone who was inconvenienced by his driving. Here's a little something that might help to...ease their distress." Argus smoothly pulls a few orbs from his vest and hands them to the guard, who is both distracted by the money and bemused at the odd denominations. The guards walk away, mollified. Argus claps the driver on the back. "Never fear - you are doing fine." And he smiles at Elysia. "I appreciate that you were here in case that didn't work." He climbs into the carriage and then replies to Eozindra's comment: "I always feel that, if one needs to travel, one might as well do it in style!"

Once everyone is aboard and settled comfortably, he takes a device from his pocket and raps on the ceiling with it. "Let's continue!" Argus calls, and the driver gets the team going again.
OOC:
* - At a minimum, Argus and Morik know that Argus is not a knight, but these guards are both ignorant of dwarven heraldry and being totally obsequious to wealth. Any of the rest of you can choose to know that, too, if you think it makes sense for your character.

There isn't really an explicit prompt here; the carriage ride through town will take a bit, so if you want to converse, do so. I'll post more tomorrow.

Argus smiles and nods. "Not all are familiar with our titles and how rigorously they are applied. 'kar' is a prefix that signifies that a dwarf has been awarded a title for service to the state, bestowed by a king, queen, or emperor. It's very much like 'sir' for other races. And like 'sir,' 'kar' is sometimes mistakenly used for a generic address of respect...especially by non-dwarves."

Findal leans forward to add: "We traveled with a kar on our way from Mara. kar'Javon was his name."

Argus' eyes widen momentarily. "kar'Javon? He was awarded with the title for services rendered to Queen Sophia's father. He's a zicherbrekh of some repute."
OOC:
Those who speak Dwarvish recognize that "zicherbrekh" is a word that roughly translates as "security consultant:" sort of a combination of locksmith and burglar. Regardless of her Dwarvish fluency, Elysia recognizes the term from her studies.
Findal leans back and strokes his beard in thought. "Ah, that makes sense. I wondered why a kar would be traveling with a merchant caravan rather than with his own escort."

Adran sits quietly, half listening as he mulls over the bolt from a hand crossbow. The angle it pierced the horse should tell a lot as to where it came from. Above them, from a rooftop perhaps? Someone on the street? Perhaps even... Adran's eyes narrow a bit and scan inside the carriage itself.
Apr 8, 2024 1:54 pm
With a perfectly trained presentation of bright-eyed interest and engagement, Eozindra folds her hands daintily upon her lap and smiles cordially at Argus. "I think we can agree that ignorant deference is preferable to some of the potential alternative conducts one may receive from the local constabulary." She breathes a gentle sigh that almost carries a giggle and looks to Elysia, shifting to the side so as to make sure there is space for her companion to sit beside her. Then the bard looks back to the dwarven man and continues, "I would be very much gratified for the opportunity to learn more of our gracious host. How long have you been traveling? What brings you to Grayhaven?"
Apr 8, 2024 4:05 pm
With a small smile, she gently pats Eozindra on the hand, a silent gesture of gratitude and confirmation that she was settled fine in the seat beside her. She sits quietly, content to listen to the conversation as she watches Adran fiddle with the crossbow bolt.

Curious to hear the answer to why he was in the city, she waits to hear Argus answer before finally speaking herself, asking, "Why would someone shoot at you or attempt to do you harm?"

In some ways, Argus is strikingly similar to Findal. Both are scholars interested in esoteric aspects of magic, but in personality, they are very different. Despite clearly being shaken by what he perceives as his narrow escape from death, Argus manages to be gregarious and attentive to his saviors, maintaining multiple conversations at once.

"Absolutely correct! The Grayhaven Guard can be distressingly inquisitive. I find that a bit of money goes a long way to maintaining that ignorance. Others might hesitate at paying a bribe from their own pocket, but I say 'Fufflehumpf' to that! What price on friendship, and furthermore, what price on my own life? I can tell that you are quality people of the highest caliber, and some of you scholars to boot." He looks at Findal warmly. "I could see a kindred spirit in you right away...well, within a few moments of being saved by this charming lady." He inclines his head in a solemn bow toward Elysia. Turning with a smile back to Eozindra, he continues. "Genteel words, lady. What did I say? Quality people! But in answer to your question, I have been a peripatetic gadabout in my studies for most of my life. I travel to remote locations to pursue my studies - the last few decades have been devoted to the most compelling research into the transformative effects of inherent magics on their environs - and then I present the results of my research at various gatherings of similar researchers. I gave a talk here in Grayhaven a while ago, and I have some time before my next engagement, in a month's time at the Alabaster Academy. So I'm staying here for a while longer, to enjoy the Jewel of the West."

As the others talk, Adran considers the bolt. It's a short shaft, no more than a foot long, the size of something fired from a hand crossbow. The angle suggests that it was fired from above, from a window overlooking the street or perhaps a rooftop.

At Elysia's question, Argus pales with a gasp. "I have no idea why someone would attack me! It honestly hadn't occurred to me that someone was trying to kill me! I'd assumed it was an accident, that something had startled the horses and they ran out of control!" He shivers. "I...I just can't conceive of why someone would come after me. I'm a scholar, I give talks on magical creatures! How could I have offended anyone to the point that they'd want to kill me? It's inconceivable!"

As the journey through the streets of Grayhaven continues, Argus is clearly shaken, though by the end of the ride he is somewhat recovered and putting a genial face on again.

Nodding her head in understanding, Sia quiets again as her thoughts begin to run. Could this have been a quiet attempt at taking out a magic researcher? With his wealth, he no doubt had connections, which could make someone want to remove him quietly. An accident on the streets wouldn't be a bad way to do it, kills him while keeping the person who ordered it out of it. Or is Elysia thinking too much into this, maybe it was an accident. Not that she continues that thought, just acknowledges it because her gut is saying otherwise.

Deciding to hold other questions while the dwarf is still obviously easily shaken up, she listens as she watches out the carriage window, keeping an eye on their surroundings.

Argus seems genuinely confused, though his eyes do stray to the elaborate wooden box he carries. It's a bit smaller than the one that Adran (?) is carrying (which Zik was using as a chair), and does not have the Duke's crest carved in it. Argus' box is about the size of a cigar box or pencil box (8" x 5" x 2"). You don't think he's lying so much as the box may be the only thing he can think of that people might want badly enough to steal. Murder, though? He's baffled.

What is the significant of these wooden boxes? We found one with the dukes seal on it, and we are going to return it to him later today. But I see that you are also caring one. I sensed enchantment on the one we found and we are not going to open it, just return it. But I wonder if there an established system of wooden boxes. Or is it just a coincidence?

Adran has their recovered box in his pack, and when Argus inadvertantly points out he also has one, a thought forms that the elf shares with the group in the privacy of the coach.

"I'm no diplomat or member of royalty, but if I truly wanted to ensure something of great importance was delivered safely via conventional means? I'd hire a dozen couriers and give them all similar packages, and send them all out to different locations. Most would-be thieves would be hard pressed to catch the true package."

with a self-destruct enchantment on the box, so if it was opened the secret would still be... secret. Clever!
Even if its not true.
