[Interest] Marvel Heroic Roleplaying: Breakout

I want to try my hand at running Marvel Heroic Roleplaying game, and there seemed to be interest over in this thread. But I thought a dedicated thread of it's own could be useful.

This will be my first time using the rules so I will probably stumble and fall and get something wrong at some point.

Since it is my first time I would like to run the Breakout event and see where we go from there. Hopefully it will be a success and we could keep going.

If there's interest are people more interested in taking a ready made datafile or making their own characters (or even the possibility of random characters).

Also, I am going away this weekend, so it won't start until next week at the earliest.

I'm definitely willing to play. I've never heard of the game until j got to this site though so I'm about as new as you come. I'll look it up in the meantime to have some info on it.

Never played but interest in being a hero. I have the hulk marvel heroic module but not the corr book so idk how to make a character.

Oh boy. This sounds like so much fun. Just downloaded the book. Count me in.

I would love to play this game! I have read it cover to cover many times but not actually played.

Looks like there's an interest.

The primary character creation system is to just pick the traits that seems to fit the concept, so there's no points or balancing factor beyond what the GM will allow. This is because the rules assumes that you will play as actual Marvel heroes that are already built. The core book includes Armor, Beast, Black Panther, Black Widow, Captain America, Colossus, Cyclops, Daredevil, Emma Frost, Human Torch, Invisible Woman, Iron Fist, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Mister Fantastic, Ms. Marvel, Sentry, Shadowcat, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Storm, Thing and Wolverine

There's also an optional random character generation method out on the net somewhere.

I also have access to all three Civil War books and the datafiles in them (Civil War, Civil War: Young Avengers and Civil War: X-Men)

I am open to a combination of these methods based on what the players would want. For those who haven't played or even read the system before the easiest would be to pick a datafile.

I suppose that makes sense, although I've always tried to avoid copying/being a pre-established character.

So is the system designed around playing as the official characters or would we be able to invent new ones? I'd hate to be setup with an established comic character, mostly because I doubt I would do them justice.

Both. The licensed characters are fully fleshed out and ready to pick up and play. It makes pick-up/one-shot games really easy.

The "random generated" characters can get...wonky. You might get a character with powers that don't exactly mesh. Like Leaping, Telepathy and Dark Force Control. It's up to you to make it work. Or if the GM is nice they might allow you to tweak powers that don't make sense.

And I understand what you mean about wanting fearing to portray the characters right.

That's why I made an interest thread first. I don't know the system well enough that I feel confident making my own datafiles/characters yet. But I'm happy to help out, and hopefully someone else knows the system better and can help out.

Don't think we will end up making a useless or overpowered character. This is the system that has been able to balance the Sentry and Hawkeye or Amadeus Cho in the same group according to what I've read.

Well, since this is Marvel, I've always had a stronger lean toward the X-Men/mutants in general. If those are open, I wonder if Iceman is an option.

He sure is.

I have started a game, so we can continue character creation there.

I haven't played a ton, but from what I have, the balance comes from the dice roll mechanic: you can only bring so many dice to bear. You can add more dice by spending hero(?) pts, but generating those points is easier for those with lower powered dice, so high power characters get by on the beefiness of their d10s and d12, and "lower" powered characters get a bit more narrative flex with point spends to bring themselves up to comparable.

And fx for the powers help with dice pool manipulation too. The benefit there is situational, but the use of fx is discretionary, so it works.

The term is Plot Points, but close enough. They are generated when a player rolls a 1 on any die. The Watcher (this game's GM title) adds the die type to their Doom Pool and gives the player a Plot Point. Technically you are right that characters rolling smaller die types have a higher chance of getting them, but it is also up to the Watcher to hand them out.

To many and the PCs can run hog wild, to few and the action might get a little boring.

I'm a fan of Marvel Heroic, and would love a chance to play in some of it!

You're in, just added you to the game :)

Sweet, now to narrow down who I'm going to play.

You still have room in this game? I know nothing, but I love Marvel comics, and I think I can get the sourcebook at my library.

Cool. Can I be Miles Morales? I'll try and grab the book today.
