Jestin, the travling merchant, gives the feel of a snake oil salesman having provoked a few to many villages and so in need of new places to seel his wares. Acording to him they place they are heading is a remote outpost opened by some scholarly types digging up an old city. However it has also turned into a bit of a trading hub due to its location and the supply routes from various intersted parties.
You've been traveling for a couple days already and had little to do but help with the animals that seem oddly uncomfortable with their 'owner'. The sun blazes overhead making you wish you had found a merchant with enough wealth for a covered wagon, when your wandering eye catches something slipping from one bush to another ahead of you on the track.

He tended to the animals that were on the cart, making sure that they weren't too scared of their journey and often would look at the surrounding area to see if there was any trouble coming their way. He thought that he saw something moving between some of the nearby bushes, but the sunlight blazing down on them made it difficult for him to see exactly what it was.
If it weren't for him being on guard duty, he would have ignored it and let it pass, but he had made a deal to trust his paranoia.
"Stop." He told Jestin and waited for his repsonse.

Jestin

Hold your water. We'll stop for lunch at midday. There should be some water a bit ahead Jestin replies, adjusting his wide brim hat against the suns glare to maximize his shade.
The draft horse nickers a bit and tosses it's head to lift is nose and you spy a second form in the brush further back. Both shapes were ahead to the left, smaller than a man, but not by much, and moved low to the ground.
"Get that horse running as fast as it can, somethings coming out from the brush and I don't know how many there are exactly, so let's get the hells out of here before we are ambushed and killed!" He commanded!
Ashlan is then going to do his best to make sure nothing falls out of the cart.

As the magone passes the place you spotted movement a piercing yipping howl and joined by several other voices. Looking behind you see a small pack of dogs 4, not 5, leap from the brush in pursuit of the wagon.
From the loos of it the doogs will overtake the wagon in a moment. Jestin calls back Try to drive them off before they get to the horse as eh reaches down to pul a crossbow to cock and load it with one arm and his legs, holding the horses rains in the other hand.

Though you fail to strike the hounds the lash still makes them flinch and lose a bit of speed. However two now line up and aim to board the wagon while the other rushes up towards the panicking horse. Both of the hounds manage to grab the wagon and one actually manages to land atop it mere feet from you.

The other hounds are still back a bit but if you can't get moving soon they will catch up.
In all the chaos, he sees the crossbow sitting there, loaded but not being used and takes it himself and aims at the one that is attacking the horse. He prays to the gods above that his aim is true and fires it at the dog.
He then takes evasive maneuvers to defend himself against any of the other dogs.

The hound takes two lashes and with a mighty lurch from the horse it is thrown clear. Jestin immediately urges it back into a run. I'm not sure how much more the horse will take! he cries in panic.
The hound on the wagon lunges and snaps at you as it seeks to take you down quickly now that its pack has been knocked back and it is alone.
