Harry Malloy
Harry Malloy sat behind his large open desk in his corner office of the Tattler. Like always, the man had the shades pulled low, making the office feel more cramped. That compounded with the scattered papers and half proofed articles strewn about the place always made Harry’s office feel more like a hoarder’s basement than a prestigious position of authority. What was the point of having windows when the shades were always pulled.

Harry rubbed his forehead. The crease was there, between his brows. Harry always got that crease when he was worried. He looked up at Amanda, I don’t know Amanda. It seems like a stretch. There are those in that church that can be downright vindictive. Can you go over it one more time? What’s your angle?
OOC:
Please also feel free to talk about why you think Amanda wants to investigate the church? Maybe she had a friend she lost to their numbers? Maybe she suspects the church covered up a crime she witnessed?

Counselor
The LAPD assigned counselor wore her name tag slightly askew. Tara. It was those little details that mattered, but everyone just over looked them. She smiled patiently as she looked at Spencer. Was she waiting for him to say something? After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, she looked down at her legal pad and back up at Spencer.

Mr Shull… I realize most people come to me to ensure they get their pension… but some people I am able to truly help. That only works if you talk to me though… It says here you’re a member of the Church of Sunyata. They’ve done such great things in our community, but what drew you to them?

She looked at Spencer expectantly.
OOC:
What initially brought Spencer to the Church? Was he grieving the loss of a child? Does he battle with some addiction? Was he just looking for someplace to unload the stress of work?
Apr 26, 2024 5:54 pm
Spencer sat uncomfortably in the chair across from his counselor, his shoulders slightly hunched forward, hands clasped loosely in his lap, as if suffering from a sour stomach. The dark grey suit he wore, muted tie cinched up tight around his neck in a double-Windsor knot, was rumpled in the peculiar way earned only by long hours spent in the driver's seat of a car.

Why did I join? he scoffed at the nosy impertinence of the question, snapping out the response almost before the counselor had finished speaking. Why did I join? he thought to himself, his aquiline features and sharp, almost predatory eyes smoothing from a look of disdain to one of private reflection.

This will be hard for you to understand, seeing as how you're just a desk jockey with a comfortable office and chummy colleagues you can buddy up with at the water cooler, but it's lonely out there he said after a momentary pause, gesturing to the streets outside, invisible behind the curtains of grey office building walls. Lonely and violent, dripping with the pain of others. Cops out there, they gotta be a sponge. A pain sponge. And lady, I was all full. I needed to be wrung out and left to dry, to be allowed to forget, to be absolved of all the things I've seen and done. The church was a way to do that. To help relieve some of that weight and pressure. It was more than that too. It was a way for me to keep helping others while helping myself, you know? All working towards the same thing. Emptiness, he gestured vaguely in the air.

Spencer’s moment of waxing reflective vanished as suddenly as it had come on. Refocusing his eyes to the counselor he snapped, Now what the hell does any of this have to do with my pension?

Counselor
The counselor took the aggression in stride, listening with an ernest face that tried to show compassion. It was an obvious mask as she was practiced enough to have heard all of these things before. At Spencer's question, her lips drew to a line. It is the stance of the LAPD that all of our officers coming from... Well. Having come from your line of work that we encourage them to look out for their mental health. Your pension review will require my sign off that there are no lingering... scars to be dealt with. She paused, readjusting in her seat before continuing. Does it strike you that you see those that were not out there with you as being ignorant... or with their heads buried in the sand... And yet, you like the church because it allows you to become like that? Wouldn't it be better to process these things... face them head on? What exactly are you trying to forget? Perhaps if you can give me some context, I might be able to suggest alternative methods of processing?
Apr 27, 2024 12:43 am
Scars to be dealt with. Spencer did not like the sound of that ominously phrased statement. It sounded as if they wanted to toss him into a looney bin.

What, twenty-two years of rapes, murders, suicides and abuse cases aren't enough for you? But you know exactly what I'd like to forget, so lets not pretend otherwise. I get it, the LAPD is a big organization and you're a very important person, but it was only in half a dozen newspapers around the city, not to mention all the after-action debriefings at the station.

A high speed car chase on wet roads. A young recruit too hot-blooded and bulletproof to stop and a Field Training Officer too dumb to tell him over the radio to call it off. I don't know how a car catches fire like that, never made any sense to me. Almost seemed like magic. But he burned to death just the same, right there in front of me. Saw him melting like a fuckin' candle and all I could do was sit there and watch, listening to him scream. The door was fused shut, you see? Couldn't even get him out by the window. Turns out those vests,
Spencer tapped his chest slowly, measured, forcefully, are good for stopping rounds from handguns, but they're mighty flammable. Thing was fused to his chest along with the seatbelt and the rest of his uniform. That contextual enough for you?

If you face a bull head on you get trampled. That's why those fellas in rodeos jump into barrels to hide, and sister that's all I am, just a rodeo clown. The church is helping me "process" just fine. Wonderfully, in fact.

"Come on, Harry." Amanda replies uncomfortably from the seat across the desk from her editor. "We both know this Emptiness malarkey is a sham to whitewash the sullied reputations of Hollywood's faces. If we can catch Verity Harrow red-handed in the lie of her sudden transformation to sobriety, via the Church of Sunyata, the people will finally have proof its all smoke and mirrors."

Besides, Amanda thinks to herself. If I can bring down that smirking facade of ultra-conservatism the church projects, all the better. Frick'n hypocrites.

Harry rubbed his crease in concern, looking down at something that didn’t exist on his desk. Finally he puffed his lips and looked up. You know me Amanda, I just want to let people know the truth… And I would love to stick it to that self uppity Church. I just… He tapped his finger on his desk. Amanda had seen this a hundred times before. This was the wearing down. The last fight before he gives in. Abruptly, Harry stopped and pulled his lips into a line before saying …what the hell? But! You owe me a Boston Crème for this. He smiled mischievously at Amanda.

@AceRancheros, can you brainstorm what was the first thing the Church did for David? Did they cover up a hit and run? Did they get him his car or apartment?

The counselor looks genuinely concerned. The first time Spencer has seen a genuine emotion before. She looked Spencer directly in the eyes when she said, I’m sorry for what you’ve been through… that… it’s awful. If the church is working for you… to process… Well… just let me know if I can help any way. She pulled a pen and signed something on her clipboard.

I’ve been mulling it over and should be good. Do you want me to say or intwine it within David’s narrative?

Blake could feel it. Meeting with this publisher was the first step. They would meet, and the publisher would determine if there was enough substance to give to an author. Then if the author did a good job, a book. Then conferences, media tour, a movie? It was all right there waiting for him to take the first step. The publisher cleared her throat. Had she asked something? She said Er… Mr Tevis. I asked for you to tell me about your first experience with the church.

"Sur-ah thing, Harry: A Boston Crème." Amanda acknowledges and stretches out a little in her seat. "I'll put that on order as soon as I get back with our story."

"Well, I was lost, like most of us were, just barely making it through the day, then I found a pamphlet for the church. It was not very good let me tell you, I instantly knew I could do better for them in the public relations department. So, I took the pamphlet and decided to go have a talk with the preacher, pastor or holy man about it and a possible job. Little did I know, he was going to save me that day. I did a little pick me up, just a quick snort before going in to talk, you know to give me the energy I thought I needed. It was as if he had been watching me, but it was impossible, I was in my car on the side of the church that there was no windows. I walked in and introduced myself, but he cut me off and told me the church could give me all the energy I needed and that I would never need to snort another line. I looked into his eyes and just knew he was telling me the truth."

The publisher, Ann by the nameplate on her desk, sits in quiet shock for a moment before she blinked and starts writing in her notes. Ummm… I’ll leave out the… err… I’ll simply say you were struggling with deep seated addictions and the church helped you with that… She continues to scribble. Did you know the church was right for you from the very first?

Who exactly are you referring to? Brian Musgrove?
OOC:
The founder of the Church (the man in the video) was Ralph Chandler who passed away some years ago. Presently the church is being run by Brian Musgrove. Other notable leaders of the church are Craig Steele, an actor who is retired and has moved into the church heiarchy, and Jarod Woodward, a prominent director known for his dramatic flair and well thought out films.
Apr 30, 2024 4:51 am
Production of a new movie, the first of the Church’s endeavors in the film industry, has begun being spearheaded by the famed director Jared Woodward. The movie is called ‘The Space Between’ and stars an up and coming actress named Verity Hallow, alongside David Otera. The movie is supposed to be an artistic masterpiece, intricately weaving the Church themes into a woman’s discovery of who she is and who she wants to be. Amanda secured a position as a production assistant, a glorified errand runner. She has been tasked with getting David Otera from his trailer and taking him to hair and makeup.
OOC:
@RageRed,@AceRancheros can you guys run a scene of your interaction?

How many years have I been in the church, during Ralph's tenure or not?

Could be! Chandler stepped back from the church in the late 70s but was around for a few years before he died
Apr 30, 2024 9:02 pm
Its still an ungodly early hour in Hollywoodland, as Amanda strides through the trailers with clipboard and David's preferred morning brew in hand. She approaches the one with his name taped up beside the short steps and the door. With a step up, she raps on the trailer door with the back of her hand and knuckles. "Mr. Otera. Morning. Time for your hair and makeup, Sir."

I am going to guess this is early on and before Verity goes missing?

David rolls off the built in sofa bench, pissed that the day is starting already. He gets to his feet, bumping the table nearby and nocking several bottles and half empty glasses to the floor.

"God Damn It! This better be good!"

David stomps all the way to the front door and opens it loudly and aggressively. The face that emerges from the trailer is tired and unshaven with a heavy smell of mint mouthwash reeking from every pore.

"What! Oh... its you..."

He glares at Amanda as if she's the source of his many life problems.

"I assume you have my coffee?"

OOC:
Perfect! Yes, this is still the preamble to events.
May 1, 2024 9:26 am
"Yes Sir." Amanda holds out the lidded cup she's brought to him. "Its as you've requested Mr. Otera." She adds, fidgeting slightly and holding the clipboard down against her thigh.
May 1, 2024 8:00 pm
"Good! Now be a good little assistant and go tell them that I’ll be out in 10 minutes"

He’ll grab the drink and slam the door on Amanda. Back inside, he’ll grab his bottle of happy pills and pop a couple down his throat.

He shaves and dresses fairly quickly, taking the time straighten his own hair before letting the pros do it.

Looking in the mirror, he takes a deep breath to center himself.

"Ok David, let’s go out there and be the star you were born to be"

He walks out of the trailer, looking like the David Ortega everyone knows and loves.
May 1, 2024 9:26 pm
Amanda blinks as the door is slammed in her face and takes a step back and off the steps. "Will do. Yes Sir." She calls back to David through the walls of the trailer.

'Prick' She mutters under her breath and walks a short distance away. Amanda touches the button on her headset and informs hair and makeup Mister Otera will be arriving in ten minutes.

Spencer And Blake

Blake was in a storm of bad media press. A family came together to begin protesting the church, claiming the church brainwashed a man named James Hanson into giving the church all of his possessions. Baseless accusations as James joyfully gave his possessions to the church prior to his death, but perception can be a nasty tool and a few media outlets have already picked up the thread. Brian sent Spencer to meet with Blake to determine the best path forward to fix the situation.
May 3, 2024 3:36 pm
OOC:
I just want to finish up tying Spencer and Blake together and then we'll get started with the main story!
May 3, 2024 7:14 pm
Spencer approached Blake in the same manner he tried to approach everyone with, coming up on him unawares. He liked the startled expressions that flashed across their faces as they tried to remember if they had been doing anything unseemly.

Brian tells me we have an issue to deal with. Something about a family and bad press? he asked, fishing out a cigarette from inside his rumpled suit jacket.

Hop in the car and you can give me the details on the way. Spencer didn’t bother explaining where they were going, assuming it would be self evident he wanted to case the family house.
May 7, 2024 9:38 pm
Seems to me that the way forward is get the family to publicly recant. Or, worse case scenario we scare ‘em into silence and the story disappears on its own. If you have anything to add, I’m listening. Otherwise Ill wait for one of them to get home from work and make them see reason.

"I believe a talk with the family is in order. We will go from there on how we should proceed. Unless you want to handle it and I'll work on something else."
May 10, 2024 1:22 am
Right, he said, slamming the parking brake up as they stopped in front of the house. You don’t need to come in if you don’t want. You’ve got your public face to think about, and things might turn…hostile.

Not giving any time for Blake to think, Spencer hopped out of the car and moved in long, even strides to the house, looking for a simple way to get inside.
May 10, 2024 4:00 pm
The house is a simple stucco with dark shutters and a small fenced in yard, as Spencer approaches, he can hear the sound of water running in the house. It is around dinner, so perhaps they are cooking?
May 10, 2024 7:12 pm
Blake watches Spencer, but makes no move to get out.
May 10, 2024 8:35 pm
Guess I won’t be there to surprise them when they get home he thought to himself. He rang the doorbell, hoping it would be the father who answered.
May 10, 2024 11:25 pm
A woman answers the door. She has her hair covered in a bright blue handkerchief. Curls spill out the bottom of the kerchief. She stands inside the screen door wiping her hands with a towel as she surveys Spencer in his rumpled suit. Can I help you?
May 10, 2024 11:38 pm
Spencer sighed to himself. He had really been hoping it was the husband who answered. Call him old fashioned, but it was somehow a little easier on his conscience to sucker punch a man in the gut.

Instead of a punch to the gut he shifted his bulk into the door frame, making it impossible for the woman to shut the door on him.

Well ma’am, I sure hope so. You see, you’ve been badmouthing a lot of people lately, he said, calmly pulling out a cigarette and lighting it, blowing the smoke past her face into the front room. If I can offer you a little lesson, people don’t tend to like it when you bad mouth them. Now, he continued, that lesson was free, but if I have to come back here I’m gonna charge my full fee. And trust me, that’s a bill you don’t want to pay, got me? So enough with the bad mouthing and accusations. Do we understand one another?
May 13, 2024 10:16 am
The woman blinks in shock and disbelief. It takes her a few moments before she starts to stutter, You… you’re from that church! And you think you can just… intimidate me? as she speaks a large man comes into view from the back hallway. He looks from the woman to Spencer, then back. He calmly asks, Everything alright, Jess?. Jess looks at Spencer with cold eyes as she responds. No Hank… Just some asshole who’s passing by...
May 13, 2024 8:02 pm
Well, Hank, trouble is everything ain’t alright at all. Your wife here has more guts than brains, because intimidate you is exactly what I’m trying to do. Because when intimidation doesn’t work, well, that’s when things turn nasty. Spencer shifted his focus back to the woman. You got a real nice family here ma’am. Shame if anything happened to them.

Hank's brow creases in concern and alarm. Jess's face flushes red as tears begin to run down her cheeks. She says to Spencer through clenched teeth. I understand your meaning... We won't be saying anything about your messed up church and it's convenient way of stealing things from people by having them give them away... To be honest, I don't give a shit about his things. I just wanted my father back... She takes a shallow breath before saying. Are we done here? I don't want you in my house any longer than needed...
May 14, 2024 10:39 pm
Yes, we’re done. Enjoy your evening he said, giving a nod to the couple before turning his back on them and walking back to the car. He genuinely hoped it would be the last time the three of them ever met.

He sat down heavily in the car and pulled out an antique flask from his coat pocket, offering some to Blake before taking a swig himself. Things like this always put a bad taste in his mouth, but if it was for the church then it was the right thing to do. He could always be emptied of his woes later.

There, that’s settled. No more bad press, he said to Blake. Give you a lift to the church? I’m going to take a look at that movie set they’ve got going.
May 15, 2024 4:25 am
I’ll ride along to the set.
