'..look I don't know much about books. Most I read are manuals, and I mean this is more books than I've seen in my life.. many times over She gestures to the shelves. 'But the one we tell around the fire, Rascal in particular is fond on them, theirs a build up. So maybe princess thats where you are now.. and it is as you say and Artie.. what's in those pages is..th future?' She couldn't believe the words coming out of her mouth. That she was entertaining this yet.. it could be fun. Also, what knew tehings, tech could she find to build with, tinker around..

' Yet for me. Well I'm not even the leader of our group. Thats Traxxus, after his convinced me there were better ways to do things. He's the hero surely. Despite the fact he's a bloody idiot.'

Elfgard sounded like a bloody paradise. trees, snow,.. different terrain. 'I know what a mountain is. I'm not an idiot..' She wasn't going to immeadiatly hijack herself and ask what a fjord was..

'I mean if you don't want to be a silly princess, I'll trade.' She sighs and holds up the covers of her book. 'You see ths. Dirt, sand? yeah imagine that everywhere. With ruins and wrecks everywhere. Not many animals, so not many food. Shit went down like a hundred years ago. Everyone calls it 'The Event; and no one know what it it is but... well everything a mess, we're all scrapper for what's left, except the assholes who live in the walled cities, hoarding everything.

I would.. well there are trains, convoys between the cities, sharing the resources each produce. I may occasionally have, with others, decided to.. partake in said resources. Let it be spread around a little more.'

Jezebel states in wide eyed wonder at the cover of Kingsley's book. "That like like my future, or the future of my world, if something terrible happened. What was it, demon invasion? Or you don't know, do you, you said that."

She thinks about it and says, "In my world, we've adapted from basically being mostly farmers over a few thousand years to a time where rich people were living in castles and then we built bigger and bigger cities, but a hundred years or so ago, people started making machines. Powerful machines, many machines, like cars but other things everywhere, oh, electricity, and now almost no one has a horse or lives in the country."

She finishes her tea and her eyes darken. Shadows behind her wave slightly giving the impressing that the walls behind her feet are wrinkling. "People were quick to abandon the countryside because of the Others. Of course, the fewer people there were, the bolder the Others became. Now they're entering the cities, and that's where my life is focused. Investigating crimes where the Others are suspected."

She views a lip and says, "Oh, by Others I mean all manner of creatures that are smart like people but monstrous in some way. Things like trolls. "

Artie chuckles at Kinsey's losing battle to explain cars in a suitable fashion, but she waves her hand almost dismissively when Kinsey asks how she can be useful. "To Malin and her world, your understanding of technology is indistinguishable from magic. Almost all engineering operates on principles of physics and chemistry that often do not change from world to world... you may very well be the most knowledgeable - and thus powerful - women in this room."
Quote:
"What control would we have in someone else's story? Would we be ourselves, or would we be, um, rewritten as appropriate for that world?"
To Jezebel's question, Artie replies, "No, you won't be changed at all. In fact, the book will not acknowledge you exist, at first... and it is in your interest to keep it that way. After all, the doppleganger can read the story, even within the book... but they are not omniscient. So long as you do not interfere with the plot of the novel, it will not realize you have entered."

"But..." She adds, holding up a finger. "...you do not have endless time. The original protagonist - one of you - will still be recognizable. And while the story will not attempt to follow you, major characters will recognize you and confuse you with the doppleganger. Over time, this will cause complications. And if the doppleganger discovers you, it will write you back into the story as soon as possible in order to destroy you once and for all."
Quote:
"It is weird for anyone to think I'd be a hero. Or I'd deserve a story." Malin replies to Jezebel. "I haven't honestly done anything that special... yet. Artie said we shouldn't read too far forward. So maybe we did something. But what truly puzzles me is... are we, like Artie said... figments of imagination?"
Artie's smile fades, and she shakes her head. "Be very cautious of that sort of thinking. You are more than is written in your book, I can tell you that much... you have thoughts, feelings, and memories that have never and will never appear in the pages. But would you exist if the book did not? I cannot say... and I could not tell you what the book's author thought about you beyond what is written. I can tell you that when I summoned you, I did not feel as if I was creating life, but pulling you from somewhere else. Let that be enough for you."

Between Malin and Kinsey asking about time, Artie shakes her head again. "Time is a strange thing, and something that none of us perceive perfectly. Suffice to say that past and future are no different from each other besides perspective. When I read your books, I have quite a bit of control over time in your world... I might read fast or slow, or skip back and forth. I can reread it as many times as I wish. Your confusion only comes from visiting a perspective outside of what is normal."

Letting all the introductions play out, Artie waits for a lull in the conversation, then asks, "If you will all permit me something of a personal question... after taking in all of this information, about various worlds, doppelgangers, each others' worlds... what frightens you the most? Do feel free to lie, if you wish, but know that I don't ask frivolously." She pauses, looks around, and then smiles. "And after that... who would like some dinner, or perhaps some sleep? I would offer a tour of the library, but I myself will need to recuperate, and so I'd like to make certain the three of you are comfortable before I retire."

The shadows around her deepen. She notices it but for once doesn't fight back, recognizing that she feels threatened. It takes a long lip-chewing to suss out why. When she speaks, her voice cracks from the strain of voicing her fears.

"Is this hell? Has it ended already? I thought there would be a warning, before--" She gulps and strengthens her voice.

"I always feared that when fate caught up to me, no matter what I'd accomplished before then, I would be - unmade somehow. That even if I did things, real things, important things, they'd be unraveled and fade into shadows." She sticks out her chin, eyes blazing defiantly. "You want to know what I fear? That, right there. But I never let fear control me, even when I should."

"Trolls are quite scary. As is magic, and the Myrkvidr woods," Malin says quietly and timidly. She sighs for a moment. She is quiet. "But the one thing I truely fear, I really fear... is that I'll have to be someone that I am not. Be the princess. Marry a huscarl. Remember protocol and etiquette. While I just want to be... me."

Kinsey watches the other two carefully, especially Jezebel, the shadows...

' Fear only holds someone back, I don't fear, I run into things face-on. For example.l Princess In would just hit your housecarl over the head, disappear, and not let anyone tell me what to do.

She hesitates, then sighs. ' Yet I admit this talk about magic. If choosing a world with no technology is not as you say, physics does not work as it should, then I will not know how to react, or what to do. So I guess that. Being helpless'

Artie chuckles. "Hell it may be, depending on your point of view. But no, this is not the worst place you could be, Miss Gloome."

She stands up and begins to gather up the tea supplies. "A very natural fear to have, Princess Malin. Although I wonder if you really are a static thing, something true and preordained, unchanging regardless of the forces that push and pull on you... wouldn't that make you little more than a character written in a book?"

When she has completed regathering the snacks and refreshments, she smiles at Kinsey. "Would you be as afraid if you went to a world with technology beyond your understanding? Or would you believe that you could learn what you do not know? If so, how is that different from magic?"

She tilts her head and laughs. "I apologize, ladies... I ask questions for my own understanding, not to judge your fears. I promise, come morning, I will give you something to ease your nerves. But to do that, I must retire soon. Please allow me to show you your rooms, and the rest of the library - the kitchen is a must, of course - and then allow me to get some rest. I will have a busy morning... no doubt you will be busy shortly thereafter."

She opens the door she used before and holds it for the other three, beckoning them to come along, and giving them a minute to collect themselves. Once everyone who wishes to has exited, she begins the rather short tour of the facility.

The hallways are long, dimly lit with flickering, electric lanterns, and dotted with doors. Each door, according to Artie, leads to reading rooms, lecture halls, and even one copier's room. Peeking in the door will reveal each room has a different layout... some with a lectern and rows of desks and chairs facing it, others with larger desks outfitted with writing supplies, all grouped in clusters and facing each other. Each room, invariably, has more books in it, and separated in some kind of category, for they at least look similar to each other with a cursory glance.

At one point, Artie takes a door and enters a rather clean and aesthetically non-conforming kitchen. The appliances (perhaps unfamiliar) are largely chrome and shiny, stainless steel to anyone familiar. The stove gas powered, the countertops are a blue-veined marble. The cabinets, on the other hand, are wooden and carved, fitting much more coherently with the rest of the library. While Artie goes to the sink to rinse out the used dishes, she invites everyone to make use of the kitchen as they see fit, so long as they clean up after themselves, and gives a quick summary of where everything can be found. Looking through the pantry and the refrigerator finds it stocked to the brim, and the spice cabinet lacks nothing, containing spices and herbs both familiar and strange.

Artie finishes putting away what she used for tea, and claps her hands together with a smile. "Well, I hope you all make yourselves at home. My quarters are just across the hall, out that door." She points to the door in question. "The other bedrooms are also there, and you will find them all clean and with made beds... pick any that suit your fancy. There is a clock in each room, and instructions next to it on how to make it wake you up at a specific time, if you like. You will also find the door locks from the inside, and the key is in the nightstand drawer. I myself will never enter your room if the door is shut, locked or not, but I understand this is still a strange place for you all. Goodnight, ladies." She takes her leave.
OOC:
The scene will end when all three of you decide to go to sleep... or at least resign to a sleepless night, if you decide your character cannot / will not sleep. :)

Feel free to take liberties with the amenities available to your characters, as well.

Jezebel looks for whiskey and a glass. She's not a drinker, per se, but this seems really like an appropriate moment to start. Finding a loaf of bread, she cuts off a thick slice and adds butter and cheese, then a sliced pickle. Taking that to the kitchen table she ploos down heavily.

"It's a lot. This place is familiar yet strange. The books she showed us, it's unbelievable. It's... numbing." She takes a monstrous bite of the sandwich and chews thoroughly.

There was so much stuff, all intact.. if was all overwhelming. Kinsey is silent as she looks around, though her eyes keep landing on the electronics, making a note of them. If this once some sort of elaborate trap, maybe she could salvage something useful from them.

As they are in the kicthen, and shown the panty and fridge she just stares. She'd never seen so much food in one place. And free use? Kinsey just stares into the fridge as Jez opens it and starts to make. This was all food right? Some of it she recognises, most she doesn't.

'I feel you are the most accustomed to this Fancy. I've never... I mean I know what a book is but I've never seen so many. And this kitchen this food...' She keeps looking into the fridge, before finally deciding to just go for it, grabbing the same things Jezebel did. Copy her example... she didn't know what to do with most of the stuff she was seeing.

'Hell if my idiots weren't in trouble I could get used to this.'

Malin follows the others around. Looking really confused at many items in the building, as she follows them to the kitchen.
For a minute she stands looking at the coffee maker, and as she is quite unsure of what the device is, she decides to leave it alone.
Feeling somehow relatable to Axel now, being unsure what certain things are.

She'll follow the lead of the other and also takes a whiskey, nearly choking in it's strong burn.

"I do wonder where all the servants are." she says matter of factly, as if it is the most normal thing in the world to have a household full of servants.

But as the fridge is opened, Malin looks fascinated. "They store winter in a cabinet here? How extraordinary!"

Jez looks at the princess and wonders how to explain it. But she doesn't really know enough in her own.

"I'm sure there are things in your world, Malin that would seem equally strange. You said that there was magic there? What sorts of things does one do with magic? Can anyone use it, or do you need to go to school, or I don't know, be born to the right family?"
