Every home needs its heroes...
Game System: Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures
The Pitch: Oxley, your small village, seems like a haven to you and your friends, but it is not safe. Danger lurks in the forest just beyond the town wall. Wicked men and ferocious monsters are a constant threat, and sometimes dark forces find their way into your neighbors’ hearts. You and your companions are young and untested, but ready to protect what matters.
The Details: This will be a "one shot" using the Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures rules (henceforth BtW). BtW uses simple rules based on early editions of D&D (i.e. an OSR game). Characters and their village are created collaboratively during play. The GM builds the adventure in parallel using a "scenario pack". The game is designed so that when playing live at a table, a group can create characters and an adventure with no prep then play it to completion in a single 3-4 hour game session.
Character creation as play: Creating characters is part of the game rather than a prelude to the game. Everyone will do it at the same time in a gameplay thread. I expect it to take many weeks in PbP.
Characters are created with playbooks that use random lifepath tables. Each playbook builds a specific character class with a particular background and relationship to the village. BtW has three character classes - Warrior, Rogue, Mage. Some playbooks build multi-class characters.Post frequency: I want character creation to move at about one step per day (relaxed over the weekend), which means at least one post per weekday.
Disclaimers: This will be my first time running BtW. I intend to run one of the game's published "scenario packs". When we get to the end of the scenario, the game will end. If there is an overwhelming desire to continue, there is an expansion that goes into collaborative sandbox building that I'd be interested in exploring, but I don't want to commit to that now.
I don't plan to distribute the rules, but the gameplay parts are extremely simple. I will distribute playbooks which have all the information required to build and play characters.
Do you want to answer the call to defend your village?
How to apply: Post your desire to join in this thread. Let me know why you are interested in the game and which playbooks interest you.
I think a good number of players is four, but I'll take five so that we can keep going if someone drops out. Player selection will not be first-come, first-served. I will keep the ad open for about a week. If there are more than five applicants, I will probably pick players randomly (in the spirit of OSR character creation).
