0. Character generation

Jun 27, 2024 11:33 pm
Welcome! In this thread we will create the player characters plus one NPC that will accompany your group in all the adventures. You should choose the NPC's kin and profession to balance the party, after everyone chooses theirs, and I will fiinish the NPC details.

So grab the character template below and follow these steps:
1. Choose your kin.
2. Pick your profession.
3. Decide on your age.
4. Spend points on your attributes.
5. Spend points on your skills.
6. Choose your starting talents.
7. Determine your Pride.
8. Choose a Dark Secret.
9. Define your relationships to the other player characters and the group's companion NPC.
10. Pick your gear.
11. Decide your appearance.
12. Choose your name.
13. Answer the following questions from your PC’S point of view, on this thread:
A. Why have you spent the last couple of weeks in Willowbrook?
B. Why do you trust the other members of this party with your life?
C. How long has this group been together? Do you foresee the group being together for the long term?
D. Why are you adventuring and not staying at Willowbrook?
E. Tell us a little about your character background and their next goals and aspirations
Jun 27, 2024 11:41 pm
Here we have an already filled character sheet, to be used as an example. Feel free to learn from it, edit all content or even change the BB code to better suit your needs.
Jun 28, 2024 8:47 am
Hi! Thanks for adding me!

As I said in recruiting thread I was thinking about Druid PC, but seeing that you already have such character now I'm more thinking about Minstrel or Hunter. Or maybe my druid could be on shapeshifting path? But maybe it will still be too much overlap with this.
Jun 28, 2024 9:10 am
Oh, this character is just an example. It won't necessarily be the NPC. Feel free to make a Druid yourself, if you want to. =)
Jun 28, 2024 9:15 am
Ok, I will sit on this later today or on Monday (as I don't play at weekends).

So far, so good. Please continue.

Jomsviking please include Brynna's kin and profession (human fighter?) in your description but let me choose her attributes, skills, talents and other stats, ok? =)

Pedrop please also chime in. Tell us if you agree with Brynna the Shieldmaiden as the NPC companion or if you think another profession will be more useful. It's not one for each PC, its one for the party.
Jul 1, 2024 9:38 am
Brynna the Shieldmaiden sounds very good to me:) And even more so I'm ok with you making her stats. Should I propose a companion too? (I'm ok with 3 travelers, but the roads are dangerous... probably).

I will create my Druid at today's evening.
Jul 1, 2024 11:20 am
We will start with 3 but you can meet many NPCs during your journeys and invite them to join. =)
Jul 1, 2024 3:29 pm
@Jomsviking I also forgot to ask, do you have the player's guide, the book with the character generation rules? It's not an issue either way, just let me know if you need more or less explanation to build your PC.
Jul 1, 2024 5:43 pm
I have it.
Jul 1, 2024 11:42 pm
Great!

I looks like creation process is taking more time than I thought. As I always look for proper art, as I'm visual person:) And I have spent to much time this time trying to decide if I want to go with Dwarf Druid:
https://i.imgur.com/SQwycdK.jpeg
or Halfling Druid:
https://i.imgur.com/2OzganE.jpeg

In the end I choose the Dwarf version:) Faramos the Wild. He is a child of Dwarf parents that - like very few - somehow knew how to travel when the Mist was still mostly present. They have visited the village of Willowbrook many years ago, when Faramos was still a teenage (in dwarf terms). They stayed for a few days to trade and rest. But unfortunately one night Faramos leaved their staying place and went to the nearby forest. What was not noticed by his parents at first. But some eyewitnesses have seen him entering the forest that night. Parents stayed in Willowbrook for a few months, trying to look for him almost everyday in the wood - when there was a day or low possibility of the Mist coming. Unfortunately they didn't find him and after some time they lost all hope and moved on... to another place probably. Meantime there were quite a few conflicts between them and indigenous villagers as father of Faramos - desperate and engulfed with grief - started to suspect town's folk of having something to do with disappearance of Faramos.

Then: after exactly one year (maybe even to the hour and minutes) Faramos returned from the woods just as misiteriously as he disapeared. He was visibly older for a year and had a long hair as he would not cut it for a year. He had much more hair on him than he was remembered to have, but probably it is how puberty for dwarfs procead.... as - I think - he was now the only dwarf in village. And: certainly there was something different about him, but no one could put a finger on what it was.

People of Willowbrook - who feel remorse over his disappearance, especially one of the guards - took Faramos over and taken care about him. He behaved mostly normally, but he and even others felt that he has strong connections to the Woods and the animals leaving there. He even sometimes managed to return from the woods after the Mist fell on the sourrunding area - what made some some of the people suspicious of him. But the Guard protected him and knew he has good in his heart. Besides he became best hunter in town, what saved the village from famine a few times and basically allowed him to stay there for so long.

Meantime - through the years - he noticed that his disappearance in the wood, probably - allowed him to develop a specific talents and sometimes he could even take over some futures of animals that he was so close to - since the Meaningful Day.

But now... when the Mist is backing up... and he is almost an adult (39 yo)... he feel a call... probably a call of some 'bigger and deeper forest' that is far away. And he really wants to find his parents and see them once again!

I have submitted a PC to the game, but the stats are mostly from the example - now I am able to continue my PC creation, when I know who he is. Probably it will be fast now, but I will sit to it only at this evening, later.
Jul 2, 2024 8:39 am
HTech what you think about those ideas? Are they good for what you have planed? Do you have idea who this Guard that took care about Faramos is?

Jomsviking you see any connections to your character with Faramos ?

Sounds great. The guard could even be Brynna's father. I will let Jomsviking chime in.
Jul 2, 2024 9:40 am
Mechanically there are a few bits and pieces to fix in Faramos sheet. Pride, Dark Secret and gear among them. I approved it, nonetheless, so now we both can edit. =)

Tell me when you finish with that so I can take another look.
Jul 2, 2024 9:43 am
As I tried to say in my post: I only changed his kin, name and age from was in your example sheet. I will create his stats later, today. So, yes: for now it is basically wrong, but I wanted to have it in game so you could see it and answer eventual questions. I will report when it will be ready from my pov:) It is not, still.
Jul 3, 2024 8:17 pm
Busy with the holiday, will be after it this weekend though.
Jul 3, 2024 10:19 pm
OK, I'm creating my character stats:
1. Age Young -> 15 pts for att -> S 5, A 3, W 5, E 2
2. Skills: Young -> 8 pts -> as in the sheet - I tried to choose skills that makes sense with profession and backstory.
3. Talents: Young -> 1 general: Master hunter - as in backstory good in woods
4. Pride: I'm certainly Nature's Chosen One;
5. Dark Secret:
Pedrop sent a note to htech
I Was wandering if it should be public or GM-only??? Made it GM-only.
6. RELATIONSHIPS:

Brynna: Is like sister to me, I must protect her in sake of her father. Thats my duty.
Horus son of Osi: -> first I have to hear who he is.

7. Gear: knife and Flint and Steel, rolling for silver

OK... that's it I think. My sheet is updated now and should be ready:) Do we start with any WP?

Anything else I should do with my PC before we start?
Last edited July 3, 2024 10:40 pm

Rolls

Silver - (d6)

(4) = 4

Okay, the rest should be public but this one I will leave as "player's choice" =)

Even if the other players know, their PCs does not (at least at the start of the game)
Quote:

Nope. Zero.

You can spend some of those 4 silver and buy anything from the Gear chapter that you have the money for. But that's optional, just know that we will start in the wilderness, as most Forbidden Lands games do.

You can also buy and sell during the game, but that will need a village and some roleplaying.

You're good to go.
Jul 3, 2024 11:18 pm
PS: You can also cast CAT’S PAW and HAWK’S EYE.

Unlike D&D, you know all the spells from your talent. There is also no need to choose one/memorize every day. You still need Willpower to cast them, though.
Jul 4, 2024 12:29 am
Ok, so I want to buy:
- staff for 1s,
- Cauldron (one have to have a means to cook all the gains from the hunt ;) ) - 1.8s
- 2 Tourches (so d8) for 1s

Total: 3.8, leaving me with mere 2 copper....:)
OK?
Quote:

Oh! I thought we come from Willowbrook? But it looks like we are just arriving there? Even more interesting probably, as it looks that we are already "on an adventure":) And will discover the town by the eyes of PC.

About spells: ok, soon I will note those on my sheet with my potential gear order:)

Horus is probably going to be modelled after the falcon, he likely has trained with Brynna and Faramos in the arts of battle. He is going to be a formiddable warrior, likely due to their training. Outside of hunting/scouting/being immensely strong he relies on others because his social and intellectual skills are lacking. But outside of killin' he is probably great with animals.

He probably has Asperger's syndrome a reflection of his psychic power as a half-elf.

Would you be amicable to chocobo mounts instead of horses?
Jul 4, 2024 4:01 am

Cauldron (one have to have a means to cook all the gains from the hunt ;) )
You actually need a talent for that. The MEAT can only be cooked by a CHEF
(see page 74) or at an INN (see page 168),
and is then turned into an equal amount of
FOOD. But you can eat MEAT "raw" – you then consume a unit of MEAT instead of rolling your
Resource Die for FOOD. You need to do this
within a day, or the MEAT will be spoiled.

The cauldron increases the amount that a Chef can turn into FOOD. I think Brynna will have this talent, but this item will not be that useful, as you're a small group. You can use that silver for something else :)

You do.

Leaving for your adventures, actually. You begin the game a few miles south of it, choosing your next hex based on some rumors and legends that you wanna pursue. =)
Jomsviking says:

Not this time, sorry. Maybe in a future game. I wanna play this first adventure using only this RPG's "standard" setting and creatures, without custom/homebrew/adapted/imported monsters and animals.
Jul 4, 2024 8:02 am
Oh! I didn't see that I have to have a talent to cook (but... wait isn't it this way IRL ? ;) ) so changing Cauldron to Snares -> so 1 silver. And I will be left with 1 silver. Noting all of this on the sheet.

So already on the track! Cool! :)

A word about hunting: I think Faramos have very different way of hunting. He finds a pray... sneaks up on it... and kills it with his knife. I don't know if wy go with this mechanically?
I would propose using Stealth with some negative mod(because they are animals) to sneak up on the pray, and then another roll of melee - if we can even go this way?

But I bought a snare just in case you will not agree on this:) And we go with snares only.
Jul 4, 2024 9:08 am
Quote:
I don't know if wy go with this mechanically?
We will go with that when there are monsters nearby or if we get into combat (with failed rolls against boars, for example), but the regular/simplified everyday hunting will be done with snares, to keep things faster.

Let's leave the knife for when you are starving or for those special combat situations, with initiative, actions and all the rules. =)
Jul 4, 2024 9:38 am
Ok. Sounds good! :)
Jul 6, 2024 5:07 pm
Alright having finished the build I will move on to characterization
Jul 8, 2024 8:43 pm
Okay! Looking forward to it, please share when ready
Jul 12, 2024 6:15 pm
Ok sheet applied, still working on it.

I will keep it simple, Horus is the son of Isis(elf) and Osiris(human).

Osiris slew a dragon in his youth. Isis was a powerful necromancer. She left shortly after he was born. Osi is going demented as he gets older, he is a kind man but forgetful and sometimes angry.

Horus is expected to be more like Osiris. But he is lazy, and illiterate. He likes being strong and trains daily with obsessive determination. Strong, Agile, and Charming, he is a bit stupid.

Hi. Happy to be here. I struggle with first step I'm afraid. May I choose goblin as kin? Would dwarf (and whoever Brenda is) have any reasons to trust and accept goblin in their party? A dumb one but thirsty for world’s smells, silver and thrills.
Jul 30, 2024 6:38 pm
A goblin is pretty complicated to go with a dwarf + human because goblins hate daylight, which
hurts their eyes. A goblin would rather hike in the night and sleep during the day. But that would be terrible for the human.

I have seen (goblins + orcs + wolfkins) and (humans + regular races) but mixing those groups is pretty complicated.

Edit: On the other hand, a small and dumb human, thirsty for world’s smells, silver and thrills would surely work.
Jul 30, 2024 7:20 pm
I missed the fact "daylight hurts their eyes". Human it is.
Jul 30, 2024 7:45 pm
PS: Brenda is available here
Jul 30, 2024 8:15 pm
Yey! Grey! I'm glad - Htech - you agreed for another player as I started to think 3 would be a perfect number for this game:)

As for PC creation - Gray - I would recommend you reading a little backstory about Halflings in this setting. I would say that they are "not exactly" "the hobbits from Tolkien's books" and in fact they have a lot more in common with their Goblin... brothers(it's not a mistake) in this setting. So if you prefer "goblin, but walking within light" - they could be a good choice it seem.

Besides in QuickStart rules their is a goblin together with humans and even elf in the party, so probably it is not so uncommon in this world?

I only have read that only orcs could be some problem - from RP side. As they have a lot of hatred toward other races.

Just wanted to throw few cents from me:)

And just out of curiosity... where in the player book it is stated that goblins eyes hurt in daylight? Is it only in GM book?

Pedrop says:

It's in the Nocturnal - the Goblin's kin talent description. But the GM's book has more details about Goblins. I am not saying it's impossible to mix those 2 groups of kins into a cohesive party, just harder. =)

On the other hand, the Halflings have a surprising depth in this setting. They are not sensitive to sunlight and are closer to the goblins then expected.

Indeed!
Jul 30, 2024 9:54 pm
Hmmm... strange. In my book kin talent for goblin is SNEAKY? Is there a new version?
Jul 30, 2024 9:58 pm
Yup. Fifth printing =)
Jul 30, 2024 10:02 pm
It's quite confusing I must say. As I can see "nocturnal" under "TYPICAL GOBLIN" in GM Guide, but there is no such thing in QSR or player guide. So it is updated in Players guide in newer version as kin talent?
Jul 30, 2024 10:45 pm
I guess so. Can you tell me what printing version are you reading?
Players Handbook, page 4 says:

This is the fifth printing of this book. Below, all significant clarifications and changes from previous printings are listed:
✥ Page 44: Pushing a successful skill roll is only allowed if rolling additional x
will increase the effect of the roll.

Play halfling?

No no way.

I think I will make it simple. I will play Rawen Claw from quickstart.

@htech would Lightning Fast talent be problem? Should I remove that talent and rise Path Of Killer to Rank II instead?

No problems. I am rolling a d10 for initiative, as I don't like GP's cards. With lightning fast, I roll twice and keep the highest.

Could you help me with equipment? Should I roll for starting gold? And does this count as rogue starting equipment (or should I spend some of the money to purchase any of these):
Scimitar
Long-bladed dagger
A cloak made from black feathers

Update: looks like if I change Long-bladed dagger to a simple dagger I can have those and add 1d10 silver, right?

Sure! You don't need (in fact, you can't roll) if you're using the pregen's equipment.

So, using Raven Claw's, your equipment is exactly as follows:
quickstart says:
- A scimitar with an ornamented blade (Grip 1H, Bonus 1D6, Damage 2, Range: Arm, Cost 8, Encumbrance: 1, Features: Edged, Pointed, Hook, Parrying)
- A long-bladed dagger (Grip 1H, Bonus 1D6, Damage 1, Range: Arm, Cost 2, Encumbrance: 1, Features: Edged, Pointed)
- A cloak made from black feathers (Cost: 2, Encumbrance: 0)
- 6 Silver and 3 Copper

RESOURCES
- Food D6
- Water D6
- Torches D8
No need or possibility to choose or spend money in anything. You can sell and/or buy things after that, but it will have to be In Character =)

Another alternative is not to use Raven Claw's equipment. In that case, you start with the Rogue's starting equipment (a dagger and choose two items from the trade goods list as specified), roll your starting silver and can buy itens using that silver before the game.
Aug 1, 2024 5:41 am
I will stay with pregen equipment. Will finish sheet later today.

But for story - since she is weak at survival I think she either need a tent or meet party other than in the wild. What do you think?
Aug 1, 2024 7:00 am
As we just have made a camp: maybe - if she is sleepy/tired - she would risk approaching strangers if she is not good at making camps? Or maybe she was fallowing us all the way from Willowbrook for some reason ? And - departing much later - only now managed to catch up with us? So could be tired and wanting to 'use our camping place'.

I think, things would be much easier to RP - becoming a party - if we would know each other from Willowbrook. But maybe you have other idea for this?
Aug 1, 2024 9:36 am
I will create a new thread for Grey and we will discover some of those things In Character =)
