Inevitable Coffee is a coffee shop that travels the multiverse, appearing where it’s needed and then moving on when its task is completed. It ‘collects’ staff along the way, usually stray folks or outcasts with nowhere better to go but good hearts who help other folks out with their problems. Sometimes the staff leave after a time, having found a place for themselves, other staff have been around years or even decades – though time doesn’t flow quite as it should in the Inevitable.

The Inevitable doesn’t really seem to have a pattern in what’s important, or how long it sticks around. It may appear for one time to offer a safe space for a couple to meet when their families don’t approve, another to help catch a murderer, and yet another to give refuge in a city suffering wreck and ruin in a once-in-a-lifetime storm. But wherever it goes, folks need help, and the Inevitable is just around the corner.

Currently closed for applications, if you're really interested feel free to post anyway and I'll see if there's space down the line.

The Pitch

I had this silly little idea for a game and it won't leave my head - so here we are:

Inevitable Coffee is a coffee shop that travels the multiverse, appearing where it’s needed and then moving on when its task is completed. It ‘collects’ staff along the way, usually stray folks or outcasts with nowhere better to go but good hearts who help other folks out with their problems.

The Specifics

Cypher System – 3-5 players. Expected posting 2-3/week.

Standard Cypher character creation rules, feel free to use whichever sources you like (there’s a character builder at https://www.montecookgames.com/cypher-tools/) – I am not granting an additional racial descriptor, so if you want to play a Catfolk or something, that’s your only descriptor – though you can describe your appearance however you wish, if you want to use (if you think your catfolk is better with the ‘Graceful’ Descriptor than the ‘Catfolk’ one that’s fine).

Largely urban fantasy, but will delve into other genres – and will try to match to the characters to some degree. I’d like to lean it in the side of cosy rather than dark and/or gritty, but we’ll see how it goes..

Do bear in mind that some settings travelled to may be historical (i.e. you might travel to Victorian England, ancient Greece or 1980s New York, I’m willing to take a loose approach to hiding your appearance. Though equally you might travel to the City of Crows where humans stand out. So don’t worry about it too much.

I’d also like to know what your role is in the Inevitable, barista, cleaner, cook, mysterious figure who hangs out in the corner.

LGBT+ positive (I’m bi & trans, so it kind of has to be!), my original concept was as a place that specifically appears as a refuge for LGBT+ folks, and I’d like to keep some of that but not be exclusive. Happy to accommodate safety tools if anyone has any lines/veils or if anything at all makes you too uncomfortable let me know (or just make a post/DM with X in it if you're not comfortable bringing up reasons) and we’ll end the scene and move on.

The game will be somewhat episodic, you solve whatever issue the Inevitable appeared for and then shift to the next setting, so if necessary we can re-recruit between episodes (or everyone can tell me it's terrible and they'd just rather call it a day). Similarly, if you think your character is done with their arc or want to play something else you can change character between episodes.

Your Host
I'm Spinny/Spinningdice/Abbey (she/her), I'm 41, bi & trans and have been playing RPGs since my pre-teens. I've run Cypher a fair bit irl but I've not run a serious pbp before. I have been the default DM for most of my gaming life. So I'm not inexperienced.

I'm also British and operating on GMT/BST, and usually check in 6:00pm - 10:00pm in my time, though might be able to pop on and take a look at other times.

This sounds like an intriguing concept. I’m interested in participating. My experience with the Cypher system is limited, but I’d like the opportunity to try it some more. Each Cypher game that I’ve joined (either in-person or online) ended before it even started.

That does sound like a fun concept and I would be interested in giving it a try. Funnily enough, I'm running an urban fantasy café game as well, but without world hopping :p

I'd have to think some more to flesh out a character concept but I like the idea of a maintenance/repairperson. Someone who grew up in a more difficult environment and because of that still is a bit rough around the edges, but is glad to be away from their tough life before and is trying to settle into a more cozy lifestyle at the café.

Is the world hopping magical or technology?
I just got my half on It's only magic that is about urban fantasy.

Do the players know how the coffee shop moves? Is there a fear that it will leave them behind?

Sounds intriguing. Will it be more of a sandbox or directed?

Oh and tell me if I'm wrong, but this feels heavenly inspired by Doctor Who :)

Magical, no-one knows how or why, but the shop seems to have at least some kind of will of it's own, but it doesn't really communicate (or maybe it will down the line if people want to look at it). It does leave people behind sometimes, but it only seems to do so when they're ready to leave.

Semi-directed. I don't have an epic campaign planned, so it'll be a stop at a time and I'm more than willing to take on player ideas if they want to look into something more (i.e. if someone wants to have a personal arc I'll incorporate it and I'm happy to bend the setting to accommodate.

It's in part, Dr Who/Quantum Leap/Sliders & part those little stories where someone visits a shop, has their life changed and the next time they go there was no sign it was ever there. And then I've been on a cosy fantasy kick and a coffee shop seemed like a cosy vehicle for story. And of course it was brewing in my head while I was waiting for It's Only Magic to arrive which has it's influence as well.

I don't think Conan or BoS had any specific questions, but just wanted to acknowledge & thank them for interest, which gets to four - which seems a solid number. I'll get a game page up later today.

I really like the idea but I cannot participate this time. I would like to read the campaign, so if you like to make it public... :D

I have a tea-brewer / Barista person in mind. Human looking and since I just got my hands on It's only magic then I'm going to be inspired by that one. Meaning that it will be some kind of magic user.

Have created a game - https://gamersplane.com/games/4528/ invited everyone that's said they're interested, which is 4 so far, assuming everyone is still interested. Happy to run with 5, could stretch to 6 if anyone else wants a look in over the next few days.

Set to public so Alepous and anyone else can follow along - if any players are uncomfortable with that let me know and I'll private it.

NB: I have not run a game on this site before, so if I do something silly/stupid, feel free to let me know.

Just popping in to say that I'm super glad to see games like this pop up. I'm a huge fan of Cypher System, this pitch was excellent, and I hope you all have a great time!

Don't suppose you've got space for one more? I've been nagged by a character concept. XD

I'll take you and then close up for applications, six is a bit of a stretch, but I'm sure we'll manage.
