The darkness answers.

The fog parts, and a figure walks forwards. Swathed in the mist, holding it almost as if it was a cloak, the form is difficult to make out at first. Then, as it comes closer, the figure’s features suddenly became recognisable.

It is a young woman, a hood drawn up over her head. Her eyes look to you. She smiles, and as she does so there is a hint, a small hint, of sadness in her expression.

https://i.imgur.com/pSrKOnU.png

"You are lost. I can help you. Show you. It is not far...."

She swallows as she steps forwards. With a trembling, tentative hand, she reaches out, almost as if to take your hands in her own, but she stops short.

"There is a price though. I do not know when I can come again here to this place."

She shudders, bowing her head. Her arm shaking, she reaches out, she almost touches your arm. She stops just short, and her hands fall to her side. The girl looks up, and she smiles sadly.

"There," she points to the right. The fog suddenly begins to thin beyond the reach of her outstretched hand.

Her form begins to fade, becoming translucent and ghost-like. As it does, a tear rolls down her cheek.

"Help me….find me. He won't let me go."

And then her form fades into ethereal nothingness, almost as if she was never there to begin with. Yet she was there, she was not a figment of your imagination.

Welcome to the City of Shadows and Lost Souls. What will you find when you arrive here? What will you find when you tear away the mask and stare at what lies beneath you? Will you see the face of a monster staring back at you?

Will you realise that the monster is you.

Lost in the fog, you follow the voice and form of a beautiful woman as she guides you through the fog to an unfamiliar place.

Help me, find me, she implores you, and her words haunt you to the very core of your being, even without the ominous end of her sentence.

He won’t let me go.

And yet soon the fate of this beautiful yet enigmatic stranger will be the least of your problems. Trapped in a bizarre city, where you know nobody, and are not sure of who you can trust and who you can turn to, you can only trust each other to survive.

Or can you?

When reality is altered, and when you can never truly be sure whether the person you look at is nothing more than a mask hiding a terrible monster, you will soon learn that perhaps to survive, you will need to embrace the lesser of two evils. You must pierce the heart of this decadent city, to the terrors hiding inside the shadows of which people fear to speak. This hubris of social decay, and learn the terrible truth behind the curtain. Ultimately you will discover the truth of what lies underneath the serene surface of this terrible place.

For little do those who walk the mortal coil realise the dark truth hidden behind shadows that wisened eyes turn away from. That beyond the earthly realm in which they hold so familiar, and so true, lies another place.

It is a realm of darkness, of dread, of decay and of death. It is a place that sings.....it sings to those who hold malice and hatred in their hearts. It summons them here, to this place that they can call home. Home, amidst the creatures of the night and the forgotten souls that have become twisted and misshapen. Here, they are among their own kind. Here, they too can sing and be free in this place where they are wanted -- where they belong.

It is not until it is too late that they realise the terrible truth. That this place, as it beckons them in, as it invites them to take a seat, as it offers them their hearts desire…it hides something terrible. As the land around them shifts and takes shape, twisted by their own demons and their own desires, these beings realise that what they once saw as their salvation has become their prison.

And that now they have entered, they can never, ever leave.
First of all, massive massive thanks to Len’s Recruitment thread, it was really helpful when I was putting together some of this detail.

This game is, at its core, a gothic horror mystery set in a strange and bizarre city that is foreign to you. You will not start the game as residents of this city. As I have hinted above, at the onset of the game you are lost in thick fog which distorts both direction and sound. Wandering aimlessly, you encounter the visage of a beautiful stranger who leads you out the other side to find everything has changed. You are strangers to the city at large.

Unfortunately, you will soon find that you can trust nobody here -- everyone has an agenda and there is no telling who is friend, and who is enemy. Part of the game will involve unravelling the mystery of what is happening here and how you got here.

Can you trust anyone else? Can you even trust each other? These are the questions you should be asking.

I should be straight from the outset - this game is predominantly story and role-play focussed. As a mystery it will be heavily favoured in that way, although there is some combat, combat encounters as such will be few and far between. The combat will be theater of the mind only.

I am looking for players that are willing and able to tell a story with me, and ones that are capable of carrying that narrative.

I do have a tendency to apply the "rule of cool" when appropriate - hopefully that is acceptable to everyone here.

For that reason I anticipate that the posting rate won't be particularly high for this, but enough to keep the game going at a respectable rate -- I think about 2-3 posts a week would be more than sufficient for what I am looking for.

This won’t be a particularly long game, I hope that with a consistent post rate we can close this off within a year to two years.

This game is explicitly friendly to LGBT and any other minorities or marginalized groups.

I intend to leave this post open for a bit, at the very least until next week to allow anyone interested chance to either let me know or post a character concept. As I’m still finding my way around the site I’m not especially in a hurry to close this down.

What I’m looking for is a brief high level overview of your character as below:

Name:
Race:
Class:
Description: A short description of your character.
Character Overview: A high level overview of your character concept, who are they, what are their strengths & weaknesses. What are their hopes and fears?
Backstory: A short backstory for the character.

I’ve been hoping to get into a game where social interaction and intrigue plays a major part of a campaign. Will try to come up with an interesting personality this weekend!

I would enjoy playing a bard of eloquence in such a campaign.

OKay, let's give this a go...

Name: Jennika Green
Race: Hexblood
Class: Warlock (archfey)
Description: Jennika looks mostly human, except for a crown of bone and pointed teeth and pale skin with a slight green tinge.
Character Overview: Warlock who took on a pact with a Hag for gender transition, she hopes to indulge in things she's missed in her youth, maybe find a way to transform herself into a human girl instead of the not-quite human form she is now. She fears someone realising what she is, or turning her back.
Backstory: Jennika was born under another name she'd rather forget, after twenty years of feeling wrong - she made a trip out to the rumoured witch of the woods, who would grant your wishes if you could pay her price.
Her body isn't quite what she wants, though she can shift it slightly when the need arises, and even her flawed transformation feels more like her that she ever did before.

So here’s my pitch! A priest (non-spellcaster) who for years has ministered to the darker craven elements of society. You will find him ministering in the slums and in the dens of blackhearted criminals. No he’s not one. Just trying to save a soul when he can. He’s been doing this long enough that he knows their ways as well as those of the church. He has a reputation of being a bit rough around the edges and and tight lipped around the authorities.

Inquisitive Rogue, Acolyte background. Strengths his ability to spot BS. Weakness his distrust of authority whom he has found to be more dishonest than those he ministers to!

@Arakken, In how many players are you interested, roughly?
Aug 19, 2024 5:00 pm
This sounds interesting. I've been mulling it over, and I think this is what I settled on:

Name: Unknown. Answers to things like "You," "Mister," and the like.
Race: Reborn
Class: Hexblade Warlock for the first 3 levels, then a multiclass into... something. Not sure yet, but we'll see the direction the game goes in.
Description: Tall, pale, and a body covered in enough scars to look like a road map.
Character Overview: Not quite the typical amnesiac storyline... he was dead, and clawed his way back to life. Unfortunately, he has no idea who he was and only some fractured, distant memories of a childhood and early life.
Backstory: To be revealed in game. (I'm actually thinking he was no one important and suffered a wholly mundane death. Part of his arc will be finding out and then coming to terms with the fact he was, essentially, nobody.

6 would be ideal.
Aug 20, 2024 7:38 am
Name: Caligula Caesare Salvatorii "Cal"
Race: Satyr
Class: Bard of the College of Eloquence
Description: He's a little larger, a little smarter, a little faster, and a little better looking than most other satyrs.
Character Overview: He's a satyr and a bard.

Backstory: Rhodes Scholar, Philosophy Major, Leading Expert in Neurolinguistic programming, Aspiring writer

Hey all, I've created the forum for the game. We've got four submissions already which is great.

@Basil you're pitch sounds fine with me, feel free to fire in with a submission similar to how others have done theirs.

We're a bit light on martials and wizardy sorts so if anyone has anything brewing there that would be great.

@MaJunior, @spinningdice, both of you have come up with Warlock characters so if it comes down to me taking you both on I may ask one of you to switch classes if that is acceptable?

Otherwise still just under a week to go until I close this so plenty of time for anyone who is sitting on the fence about applying to go for it.

Just so you know what to expect from me, I'm very much a narrative based DM and really, really enjoy writing. Expect lots of long, sweeping posts from me with lots of description and characterisation. I love spinning up plots and creating worlds so the more you can give me in return in terms of characters that have strengths, weaknesses and fears, I'd love to bring them into the game and build them into the plot.

Well, they do have different patrons.

Plus I was only taking the first three levels in Warlock and then multiclassing out of it. While I'm not entirely sure what I'm going with, I'm leaning towards either Fighter or Rogue, although Cleric is also a possibility... but I figured I would let the initial story make that decision.

Name: Father "Eyes" Rigel
Race: Custom Human Lineage
Class: Rogue/Inquisitive
Background: Acolyte

Description:

Human - Younger than he looks, A rough life has taken a toll on him. Although he tries a to spread a message of hope, his brooding distant look makes that tough a sell. If one would guess his favorite color they would probably say gray.

Backstory:

Father "Eyes" Rigel grew up in the shadows of the slums, a place where survival often meant stealing to eat and trusting no one. His sharp mind and quick hands made him a natural rogue, but the harshness of life eventually led him down a darker path—one of addiction to narcotic powders that nearly consumed him.

One fateful night, after an overdose left him barely clinging to life in a filthy alley, a stranger—a traveling priest—found him. Instead of passing by, the priest offered Rigel a hand, saving his life and showing him that even in the darkest places, there is hope.

This act of kindness lit a spark in Rigel's heart. Determined to repay the compassion that saved him, he turned his life around, joining a temple and embracing a faith he never thought he could believe in. Now, as Father Rigel, he walks the same streets he once roamed, offering guidance and protection to those who feel as lost as he once did. His sharp eyes, once used for thievery, now sees the pain in others, and he does everything in his power to help them find their way out of the darkness.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Hopes & Fears

Father "Eyes" Rigel is a man shaped by a harsh past, yet driven by a deep desire to help others. His sharp instincts, honed in the slums, allow him to see through lies and connect with those in need. He understands pain and uses his street smarts to guide others out of the darkness he once knew.

However, Rigel is still haunted by his past addiction and the guilt it brings. He often takes on too much, fearing he might fail those who depend on him. Trust doesn’t come easily to him, given his history of betrayal, and he worries about slipping back into old habits. Despite these struggles, Rigel dreams of finding inner peace and transforming the slums into a place of hope. His greatest fear is not being able to see that dream come true.

That is five we have now, I have room for one more if anyone would like to pitch in?

Otherwise I'll send out some invites either tomorrow or Friday once I've got the individual character threads set up and get the ball rolling.

I have sent invites out to the 5 players who have applied, inside the forum you will find links to your own individual Character Threads where I’ve left further details.

As mentioned above, there is still one slot left open for anyone else who is interested.

Sounds amazing! To be upfront, I have no experience playing pbp, but really want to get into it!

Name:Darnell Mosshorn
Race: Variant Human
Class: Barbarian 2, Monk 1
Description: Darnell is a former criminal, after a horrible incident he caused, he swore to change his life. Becoming less impulsive and more in controle of his emotions.

Character Overview:
Darnell is amicable, though a bit hot headed. He leans more into physique than mental strength. hates being alone over longer periods, a couple of days is fine, but after that he begins feeling depressed. If given the chance, he'd rather persuade a guard that it's in their best interest to let Darnell pass, than outright fight them. His fear of being alone, also makes him insecure, vulnerable to the feeling of not being good enough, so he quickly blows up at the slightest insult.
He fully believes that he needs to be one of the good guys, and now does so by redistributing wealth. Stealing from the rich, and giving to those in need.
Darnell's conscience weighs heavy on him, as he feels responsible for the deaths of dozens innocent townfolk, after a job that went wrong. He still fears to hurt the innocent, and is out for redemption.

Backstory:
Darnell was always one of the bigger boys at home. Powerful and quick, he sought out for adventure at a young age. He quickly found out that life on the road was a lot more demanding than living and working on a farm. After being betrayed by a group of adventures he admired, his heart grew darker. Those adventures were supposed to be the heroes, but they made him pay the price for the crimes they committed. As the world and that which society holds deer apparently was against him, he would be against the world.
Committing minor crimes like theft, one day he stole from the wrong person. She was a member of a band of bandits, and though at first she wanted to make him suffer, she saw that he could be of value to their group. So he was given the choice between death, or working for a group of bandits. They manipulated his need for acceptance to make him commit crimes like theft and robbery.
During one time, his group stopped a caravan of multiple carts, demanding payment to pass them. As this transaction was taking place at the front, Darnell walked past the carts. Suddenly he heard laughter, and as he looked he saw a teenage boy laughing pointing at him. This made him so angry, that he lost control of himself, and started attacking the people on the caravan. In the end, the bandits killed everyone. During the looting, he found a talisman from his village, quickly realising that he was responsible for murdering someone from his hometown. Extremely distraught, he jumped on a horse and rode of as fast as the horse could.
Leaving the scene of his crime, and leaving the bandits behind, he is hell bent on redemption. He wants to be in control of his emotions, and to not lose his temper so quickly. Finding refuge in a temple of Lathander, he found a chance at redemption. Setting out to train as a monk, and restore the balance of his conscience.

And that, as they say, is a wrap. Thanks for the interest everyone, looking forward to seeing you in the game!
