ClosedDungeons & Dragons 5thPrivate3 / weekSHMKehoe
This adventure combines the contents of the Lost Mines of Phandelver and the Dragon of Icespire Peak with a potential lead into Shattered Obelisk.

A dragon has set upon the Sword Mountains, but there's also gold in them mountains! Along with other treasures, ruins, monsters and loot.

Your (broad) task is to aid your employer, Gundren Rockseeker, in finding the long-forgotten and fabled mines of Icespire Peak, whilst also dealing with the ever-present danger of the new apex predator soaring the skies.

Gundren Rockseeker: A rugged dwarf with weathered features and salt-and-pepper muttonchops. He wears a leather vest over a buttoned shirt and a wide-brimmed leather hat that tucks over his hair, tied back with a leather strap.
He's down to earth and humble, though slightly prone to greed. Friendly and loyal.

You received a job from Gundren Rockseeker and his brothers, Tharden and Nundro. They need a few adventurers to escort a wagon load of mining equipment to the frontier town of Phandalin, some weeks east of Neverwinter. Among the cargo is a shipment of supplies for a trader in Phandalin named Barthen's Provisions, which is where Gundren promises to meet you with your payment of 10 gold each.
The excited dwarf went on ahead to Phandalin a day prior with a warrior as company.

System: D&D 5th Edition
Content Warnings:
An adult game with coarse language and descriptions of violence.
No sexual content or depictions of sexual violence.
No spiders.
Other content restrictions can be discussed when a player base has been established. Please feel free to DM me about any specific content triggers. I cannot promise to cater to everything but I can try.

Sources: All official sources are allowed.
Character Restrictions: Flying races are disallowed. All other official character races are allowed.
Alignment: This is a good campaign. Evil characters are allowed, but this is not an evil campaign. If you want to play an evil character, then please aim for an antihero rather than a villain.

Character Creation: Your character has met and possibly done jobs for Gundren Rockseeker in the past, aside from that, your backstory can be whatever you like. You can be anyone from anywhere, however, this campaign is based in Faerun so bear that in mind.
Non-Faerun character creation content is allowed but will be flavoured for Faerun.
Spelljammer content (whilst technically existing in Faerun?) will be flavoured as more typical Faerun.

Stat Generation:
Standard array
4d6 drop the lowest. Especially low arrays generated with this method can either choose to re-roll or use the standard array.

Post Frequency: I think that it would be reasonable to expect three posts a week, but I will be available for more. Players who cannot commit to at least that probably will be left behind and therefore not be a good fit.

Combat: Theatre of the mind.

Who can Apply: Experienced players and Newbies to both 5e and play-by-post are welcome, I am new to play-by-post myself and we can learn together!

My style of Dming:
I like to move things along and if I feel that the players are circling or directionless I will generally push the story along by saying something happens or you arrive at XYZ, etc. If you feel that I have done this prematurely or your character would have done something in the time I skip, feel free to interject and we can cycle it back.
On the spectrum of rules as written vs rule of cool, I'm very mid, leaning rule of cool. I will let the rules bend, but not break- and usually not in the same way more than once. You might be able to get away with a broken strategy once but don't rely on it!

My name is SHMKehoe, or SHM, whatever you like. I'm an experienced DM in 5e and I'm excited to start something new!

Thank you for your interest, and depending on reception I will leave this open until at least Saturday the 31st, to begin the game on Sunday the 1st.
I'll try to answer any questions in this thread, feel free to post some character concepts if you are interested!

I am definitely interested. I have an idea for a (Variant) Human Barbarian with the Giant Foundling background in mind. Are you allowing feats and do you want us to for ability scores before selection or after?

Feats are a-okay.
I'm assuming you meant to say "form" ability scores but correct me if I'm wrong. It doesn't matter much to me, if you want to roll some now that's fine by me!

No, I honestly some how didn't write roll before for. My bad.

Rolling now.

Roll totals; 10 12 15 11 15 13

Just better than standard array.

Rather interested. Thinking of a rogue like character. Good but the slippery kind. Perhaps a scout type. Possess well as a guard too.

I'll join, if you have room. Don't feel like you need to save me a spot, though, as I'll gladly allow others a chance to play.
Aug 29, 2024 7:32 pm
@Azule86 a nice set of rolls! Nothing below 10 is a nice result.
Aug 29, 2024 7:36 pm
@GeneCortess a Scout subclass would definitely fit in in the rugged wilderness around Phandalin! A welcome addition!
Aug 29, 2024 7:38 pm
@CancerMan I'm not sure I'll get many requests, so I'll 100% bear you in mind. Thanks for being gracious!
Aug 29, 2024 7:43 pm
I'm also interested! I've got a dwarven sorcerer in mind that I think would be fun in a particularly mine/mountain-focused game.
Aug 29, 2024 7:54 pm
I am interested. Looking to do a Monk to see how it goes
Aug 29, 2024 7:56 pm
@Snomin Sounds like a great character concept! I could easily see how your character could have ties to the Rockseeker brothers if you wanted to go that route.

Honestly, I got lucky that it is just better than the standard array. I wasn't expecting to do that good.

I'd love to throw my hat in the ring, although you have a fair number of applicants already. If you're already full-up, I'd be happy to head up a wait list.

As for concept... I have a few (don't we all?) but some are more or less restricted by stats, so I don't want to pitch one and have it not be as feasible as I'd hope for. That being said... my first concept is an undead Warlock/Paladin who isn't allowed to die until he's done enough good to let his spirit rest.

If you're still open for a recruit, I'm reading mines, Apex predator, heck, even just the 10 gold would be of good use to Movoth Greybender. A Hill Dwarf Cleric of the Light, who has found his refuge with Lathander. An optimistic, eager guy, ready to bring light in de darkness. Either with casting Light on his trusty spear and shield, or making those around him shine brighter through his support and compliments.
OOC:
These rolls feel like I'd rather go for standard array, haha

I have DM’d this, the old LMoP, and thinking of running it here too, but I have never played it. If you have any room, I would love to offer a half orc Druid, her mother was a druid too (human) that happened to meet a orc scout in the forest who was a good man, when PC was 13 fathers tribe found out about her, and her magic, and tried to take her from her mother, both parents died helping her get away.

I'd like to throw my hat in the ring as well, although you might be full already. I'm thinking an old Way of the astral self tortle, basically a character based on ooway from kung fu panda.

I responded positively to @arrcher101 interest check. Are you still planning on DMing this too, Archerr? If Arrcher is shutting down the plan to DM this, then I would very much like to participate in this one, @SHMKehoe.

No I am still planning on doing it. I am just not going to be able to start it until the end of this month. But I do have all of the prep work done.

Ok. In that case, @SHMKehoe, I wont take up a slot here too. Thanks!

I am interested in watching this one - I often like to read games that are set to public - as I am just finished running the Dragon of Icespire Peak portion of my own attempt to combine both adventures into one campaign, and I am very interested in reading how others do it.

@spaceseeker19 I'm planning on keeping it public, so feel free to read along :) hoping to start it sooner rather than later!
Sep 2, 2024 10:05 am
I'd like to read about it too. Cheers!

Sep 14, 2024 11:54 pm
