[RP] Crag's Secrets: Chapter 1 - Arrival

OOC:
As I think bonds can be done in parallel. We start the game now! :)
The grand halls of the royal court, once a marvel of intricate mechanisms, with gears, pulleys, and ingenious devices humming with life, now lie in eerie silence. The king’s nephew, once trusted, has turned these very creations into instruments of his dark ambition. Through treachery and deceit, he has seized control, casting the loyal supporters of the rightful king into chains.

You, esteemed members of the royal family and steadfast loyalists, are among those betrayed. Under the cover of night, you were seized, bound in shackles of iron and stone, and thrown into cold, reinforced cages. The nephew’s dark plans were whispered as you were loaded onto the backs of massive, steam-powered pterodactyls—mechanical beasts of bronze and granite, their wings thrumming with the energy of ancient engines.

With no chance to resist, you were flown over vast oceans and storm-laden skies, the familiar world below giving way to an alien landscape of stone and mist. The journey was a torment of bitter winds and relentless cold, your fates sealed by the nephew’s sinister machinations.

As dawn broke, the mechanical pterodactyls descended upon a remote island, veiled in mist and mystery. The landscape below was like nothing you had ever seen—towering stone monoliths inscribed with forgotten symbols, great gears and mechanisms the size of houses, slowly turning as if driven by some ancient power, and jungles of giant, fern-like trees swaying in the wind, their leaves whispering secrets of long-lost civilizations.

Unceremoniously, you were dropped into an overgrown clearing, surrounded by remnants of a once-great civilization—crumbling stone towers adorned with intricate carvings, and great wheels half-buried in the earth, still ticking away in some unfathomable rhythm. The mechanical screech of the pterodactyls echoed through the stone valleys as they ascended back into the clouds, leaving you stranded in this strange, ancient land.

But all is not lost. You are not mere captives—you are royalty, warriors, and loyalists, bound by honor and duty, and armed with the knowledge and courage of the royal court. The island may be remote and filled with perilous wonders, but it is here, amidst the forgotten relics of a bygone era, that your journey begins. You must harness the ancient technology around you, use your wits and strength to survive, and uncover the secrets of this island. Perhaps, within the ticking gears and ancient stones, lies the key to returning to the kingdom you swore to protect.

The adventure starts now. The fate of the royal family—and perhaps the kingdom itself—rests in your hands. Will you rise to the challenge, mastering the mechanical marvels of this lost world, or will the island’s ancient secrets consume you?

It's time for your PCs introduction. I would like(and love!) to get your introductory post(or posts) to consist of there apects/parts:
1. What were you doing (in castle? near of it?) when the Evil Nephew people captured you? Purpose: To show us your usual role in the court. What was most important to you in your previous life? How your life looked? That will allow us to see how it will be different from now on, in this wilderness.

2. How you looked and felt when you were transported for a 1 and a half day on the giant pterodactyl's back, in cold cages. Did you talk with each other? What were you thinking? Sadur was captured with his dog. Belladonna's mount is nowhere to be seen for now.

3. What did you feel when your feet first touched new, unknown ground in the middle of some jungle in a small clearing. You were all lowered on ropes from the back of a large pterodactyl. The dog too. But still no sign of Pepper.... Evening is approaching...

If for some it's too much (but I was hoping to read it! :) Especially as few players declared their leaning towards long forms of writing...), don't worry. Just do one or 2 parts, but describe your PC.

Shallan stood at her worktable, adjusting the alignment of her blasting spear, her own recreation of a tool used by ancient warriors and her masterpiece, pushing back her unruly red hair and squinting down the barrel with her magnifying lenses, she rose as she heard a noise behind her, turning to see her cousin "Ah, would you like to look at my latest project, I'm just about fin..." she started to explain when his companion threw a rough sack over her head, and pressed his hand over her mouth to stifle her surprised scream.

At first she wondered if it was a game, though her cousin had never seemed the sort to indulge in such, but it quickly became apparent that something was wrong... she was glad of her thick overcoat, preventing many a scuffed knee or torn dress as she was unceremoniously dragged through the corridors.
Panic set in as she was loaded onto the mechanical pterodactyl, her 'hood' removed. Did they mean to just throw her off, body cast into the sea or the distant jungle? She barely even marvelled over their construction as she, some others were here... and as the fear and panic subsided she was glad of the company. Even as she curled up wondering what was to become of them.
Finally lowered down to touch bare earth, she dropped to her knees. Letting the tears flow as it really hit her that her old life was gone. She's not sure how long she cried for but it felt like hours, but she pulled herself to her feat.

"Well, I guess the first order of the day is survival." she swallowed, she'd barely spent any time outside the palace, even less in anything that could be called 'wilderness', but there was nothing else to be done.

Brother Bartholomew, Disciple of Stone, yawned and stretched his limbs as the first glimmers of sunlight poked their rosy fingers through his window and danced insistently on his his weary eyelids. Another day, another dilophosaurus, as Master Sammo would say. Getting up at the crack of dawn was something so drilled into Bartholomew's routine that even nearly a half-century distant from the Monastery of Stone, he could not resist. After performing the most basic of ablutions, Bartholomew settled into his morning katas, as he had done for decades on end. A stiff body begets a stiff mind; a stiff mind begets becoming a stiff.. The tenets and koans of his youth were coming more and more frequently to him recently. Bartholomew attributed this to his increasing unease with Leonidas's continued absence. I had advised him that there was more unrest below the surface closer to home, but he was confident he would be back in less than three months. It has been much longer.

Bartholomew settled into a resting stance, and started his warm-ups. Ha!, Ya!, ee-OOhf!, the exhalations that focused and channeled his ki sounded over the carefully cleared and raked training area right outside his hut. As he continued, he thought of the unexpected twists and turns his life had taken. The ancient mantras filled his mind and he whispered them, almost unthinkingly.

Stone is the bedrock on which we build our lives. Stone is solid. Stone is dependable. Stone is unyielding. Yet, stone can be carved. Stone may be shaped by wind, water, or people. Stone is beautiful—both raw and shaped. Be as stone. Remote and cold or close and warm; whichever is needed. Strong and unchanging or shaped to purpose. In every circumstance of your life, be a Disciple of Stone.

As he flowed between offense and defense, he remembered…
[ +- ] The Monastery of Stone
The Monastery of Stone. Imposing, unassailable, remote, frightening……home.

A newborn orphan deposited at the base of the 2,500 steps that led up to the main complex. The students bringing the infant to the master, who decided to keep the boy.

The imposing Master Sammo as seen through the eyes of a four-year old orphan. Larger than life; as wide as he was tall. Hands that could crush ankylosaurus armor yet cradle an anchiornis egg without it cracking. A smile which lit up the room; a frown that could quiet a royal messenger at 20 yards. Worst of all, a look of disappointment that could pierce the heart more effectively than a spear.

A five-year-old Bartholomew tasked with scrubbing the dinosaur spoor. If we had only birds, that would be so much easier. But no, we have arambourgiania and thapunngaka with spoor feet long. And the smell! First the training areas, then the ledges, soon, the six and seven year old Bartholomew was scaling the cliffs with neither rope nor grapnel and scrubbing the temples. Then the cooking, the other cleaning, the running of messages, the constant race up-and-down the 2,500 steps.

Of course, in hindsight, this was all physical and mental conditioning.

The nine-year old Bartholomew waiting on Master Sammo when he sat in judgement. Two local peasants seeking the guidance of Master Sammo in a dispute. After the peasants had plead their case, the master told them to return the next day. When they had left, Master Sammo turned to Bartholomew and ask him what he thought.

Master Sammo bringing Bartholomew with him whenever he had to engage in adjudication or politics. "You will serve the people more with your mind than your body, young Bartholomew" the master had told him.

The barely teen-aged Bartholomew tearfully bidding his master farewell before being taken to the royal palace to apprentice to the king's advisors.

The disciplines of the monastery serving Bartholomew well as he learned the intricacies of royal politics, the many duties of the king, and how he could serve.

The good times, the bad times. The dalliances which led nowhere. The duels that left others with scars on their face and Bartholomew with scars on his soul. The late-night deals between the palace and the underworld when needed. The late-night raids by the palace guards when the deals went awry.

Drawing his staff, Bartholomew switched from the unarmed styles to those using the bo. Spinning like a dancer, he continued to reminisce about how he grew older and wiser—closer to Leonidas and his court. He remembered rejoicing with the king and queen when young Shalla was born, drinking toasts and praising the One True God deep into the night. He smiled as he remembered how she gravitated to the mechanical arts even as a young child. Disassembling her toys and reassembling them in novel fashion was just the start.

As Bartholomew flowed from stance to stance, spinning the staff so quickly as to appear as a wheel of wood, his mind fluttered over the myriad trade deals, border disputes, unruly nobles, and strange bedfellows of the intervening years. He then thought of his own network within the palace compound. Over the years a collection of clerks, servers, laundresses, the unseen and unheard. Never too many; the king's military and law enforcement had their own networks, after all, but enough to take the pulse of the royal compound, at least. One of his most important agents was a very talented halfling, Belladona. A talented musician and discrete courier, she was attached to Shalla's entourage. Ostensibly, to both provide entertainment to the young princess and to serve as her discreet factotum. More accurately, however, she was an integral part of the princess's security detail, being ever so slightly more deadly than the average flautist.

As Bartholomew started his cool down, his thoughts inevitably turned to Leonidas's unreasonably long absence. He should have returned weeks ago. Bartholomew's network was picking up more signs of unease in the population. Informers which used to veritable founts of information for a few coins or drinks had completely dried up. Contacts did not respond. Some of his agents to the south had not returned their messenger birds in over a week. For the first time in years, Bartholomew was seriously concerned about unrest. He used the excuse of age to bring his staff with him everywhere. He started carrying his healing herbs on his person.

Wiping himself off, Bartholomew plodded back to his hut, washed himself from his exertions, and dressed for the day. Making his way to the kitchens for his customary morning tea, he noticed that the cook staff seemed upset; some of the regular faces weren't there and new ones were. One of the new staff approached Bartholomew with a steaming cup of tea. Thank you, said Bartholomew as he took his first sip. Hmmm, the tea is more floral and slightly more acrid than usual. Is the blend off?, Bartholomew turned to the server when he was hit by an overwhelming sense of enervation and lethargy. Oh no! he thought in horror as he found himself slipping to the floor…
Bartholomew awoke, manacled and chained, in a cage on the back of a huge Quetzalcoatlus. Channeling his mental discipline be as stone…be as stone…be as stone repeating through his mind, he took stock of the situation. He was whole in body, unharmed, and still had his staff and pouches, thank the one true god. Sometimes it is good to be underestimated. Looking around at his and the other flying lizards, he realized he was one of a few captives. He recognized the princess and Belladona, of course. There was also one of the cooks, what was his name; Kismet, Kimjet, Kimbek, yes Kimbek, and a rather impressively-built dwarf whom he did not recognize. So it was a coup after all, given that the princess is here as well. Bartholomew was furious with himself. I sensed it was brewing, but not the immanency. How foolish and complacent have I become in my dotage?? Not knowing what would happen next, Bartholomew decided he must conserve his strength—both physical and mental—and brought himself into a light meditative trance.
After some time, the reptiles landed in and masked guards forced them out of their cages onto the ground in what was clearly a jungle environment. Enjoy the rest of your lives, howsoever long or brief it may be, one of the guards said cruelly. And never fear, the new regime can honestly say you were alive and healthy last we knew! He laughed as he remounted the lizard and flew off into the afternoon sky.

Bartholomew looked around him. No immediate threats. First order of business is to round everyone up and take stock of what supplies and skills we have. Survival must take priority to justice—or revenge. We must have a fire, water, and set up a watch before night falls. We can worry about food in the morning. With that thought, Bartholomew went searching for the princess and the others.

It was a busy day at work since a pair of new riding dinosaurs where brought it. Dwarf made it clear that he want to personally introduce arrives to the kennels. Nevertheless he found time to spend with Silver (name a dog) before going to the tavern tonight. He lost quite some money in a dice game and drunk maybe a bit more than usual. Dark thoughts were running through his mind on way back home
Humans don't like me despite the effort royal family put to make me fit social standards. I hate the haircut and what they did to my beard. This city is full of weak humans - weak in soul and flesh... and yet they are "respected social being" .
Just a dark moment. He just need to get back into fighting pit to unload emotions. But not tonight. Tonight he need to have a good sleep

And he slept. Slept like never before. He had a bad dream. He were seized, bound in shackles of iron and stone, and thrown into cold, reinforced cage.
Waking up Sadur realize it was no dream. Still there in the cage. Silver licking his mouth. Silver saved him from going crazy. Really. It is only now in the cage as he realize that it was the job, duty and the hobbies that kept him busy. Busy from realizing what an empty life he live away from the mountains. Away from his ancestor lands.

Ok, so we have 3 wonderful post and only need 2 more from @quilltid,@Shadowknight to start this game in proper way:) and turn in normal procedure of back and forth between GM and players:)

Yes, you are lowered on ropes, one after another. Apparently for some reason they don't want to land their "flying vessels"... :) the dog is lowered in some kind of big sack. So you will end pretty next to each other.

Belladonna was dry brushing Pepper, to soothe both herself and her dryosaur companion. Usually, she would be near Princess Shallan for her protection, especially with the unease Brother Bartholomew had mentioned last time she saw him. However, the princess did not appreciate attendants or music while she was in her workshop and would be well-guarded in the inner castle. Her mind wandered as she thought back to what had brought her here.
Halflings are considered as a sort of model minority in the kingdom. They build their homes in extremely hilly areas that are too difficult for humans to farm in, but the halfling engineering and understanding of the land allowed them to thrive agriculturally. Halflings usually have an "adventurous" phase, but that type of adventuring was hiking and finding exotic mushrooms in the forests. For Belladonna, it involved her visiting the nearest human settlement and observing a travelling acrobatic troupe. She always loved to play her flute and perform, but what really caught her eye were the amazing tricks and choreography they could perform with their dinosaurs! She was fascinated and once the troupe announced they were taking people along, she quickly stepped forward to join. She kissed her family good-bye, promising to write, and she spent the next year travelling the kingdom and performing. She learned many things, but her greatest asset to the troupe was standing on their lead ankylosaurus, playing her flute and plying people to see their performances. She had a gift at picking out those who would dance the most enthusiastically or work well with their hypnotist. This skill may have caught Brother Bartholomew's eye for when they played for the royal court, she was called back alone to join as a personal attendant to the princess! King Leonidas and Queen Mirella were extremely kind and welcoming as she learned about the court and its relation to the kingdom as a royal messenger and eventually the other skills she would need to be both attendant and protector of the princess. She felt especially fond of her charge as Shallan reminded her of her little sister back home. She could be a little overbearing in her watchfulness, but she was trying to be better of late, leaving the princess alone while she tinkered and taking on extra messenger assignments that Bartholomew had been asking for during the King's long absence.
She was broken from her thoughts when she heard loud sounds of thudding and muffled shouts. Belladonna opened Pepper's gate to let her escape if necessary and she peeked around the stable doors. Rough men were loading large moving sacks into cages attached to mechanical pterodactyls.

How strange, the castle usually avoids the mechanical dinosaurs after what happened with the smuggling ring.

She soon spots Shallan's iconic red hair poking out of one of the sacks and knows something is terribly wrong. She turns to grab Pepper and run for help when a sack goes over her and she is shoved into those very same cages.
Belladonna wormed her way out of the sack she was in and found herself in a cage above the clouds. She had never been so high before and better understood the look of fear she would sometimes see in the tightrope walkers. Looking into the other cages and whoever was there with her, she saw people who helped to defend the royal family such as Brother Bartholomew and Sadur. But her focus was on Princess Shallan and comforting her, however she could. She gave her cloak to Shallan to keep her warm and played the flute at the beginning to try and keep their spirits up. She stopped after the first night as she realized they were not going to get any food or water until they got to where they were going. As she saw Sadur being comforted by Silver, she prayed that Pepper was safe and able to get away, though she would miss her.
Finally on solid ground again, Belladonna could feel her legs wobble and completely understood Sadur's happiness at reaching land once again.

"You are perfectly right Princess. We should get together with the others and focus on getting a fire started with that sun getting so low..."

She tries to smile brightly at Shallan, but her eyes quickly dart around the clearing they are in, taking count of those who are with them and the safety of their current location.

Kimbek spent most of the day in the royal kitchens, helping to prepare and taste all the dishes for the royal banquet, but spent a little bit of time attempting to bond with the ancient wolf spirit that had first enchanted him years ago. This involved both meditation and some aspect of rituals, both taught by the Wolf Spirit and picked up from other sources. It was not the first time he had tried to invoke the animus of the Grey Wolf, either into himself, or others, or weapons, or even animals (Sadur's hounds could almost sense the wolf spirit on their own.) or any number of things. And in a sense, he could use the perceptions of the ancient spirit to feel the dangers around the royal court.

He was making his way back to the King's court, a heavy sense of foreboding lying in his throat, when he first heard the muffled screams and furtive movements in flickering torchlight. "Who goes there?" he cried with an authoritative voice, even if he did not quite believe in it himself. He raised a torch even further and attempted to tap into his inner sight but the brief interlude of concentration did not prevent him from being likewise handled by unknown forces. Darkness. The muffled shouts of others. Pain in the back of his head and silence for a few hours, though the squeal of metal grinding on metal managed to break through his mental barrier on at least one occasion.

When consciousness returned, he found himself in the cold cage astride a mechano-pterodactyl. He first reached out with his spiritual sense to see if he could feel the connection with the Wolf Spirit, and while the connection was still there he felt it much weaker than previously. So he attempted to quiet the rising fear and panic as he felt the crisp air whisk through the cages. Sadur, he recognized, the keeper of the kennel and his compatriot among the Grey Wolves.... "Clan?" He was never certain what their group was officially called but it never really needed a name. Just being known as the Grey Wolves was enough for the fighting arenas. Kimbek thought briefly of breaking the loud whipping noise of the wind and the squeal of the metal wings, but realized he would have to raise his voice significantly to be heard. He even made a half-hearted attempt to get the attention of Sadur, but the realization of their predicament (and his own sore throat from yelling the night before) taught him elsewise. Still, he thought of attempting to use the time of travel to whatever destination they were going to as a means of strengthening his bond to the spirit. And when he grew tired of that after an hour or so, he attempted to identify any injuries on himself or others he could see. Wherever they were being taken, they would need to live, all of them.

After being unceremoniously dropped in the midst of a jungle clearing, he did what he could to roll to avoid any serious injury from the fall, took a deep breath to conquer his own fears and trepidations and called out to anyone else nearby. "Is anyone hurt?"

OOC:
Thank you all for great post! So... the play... now begins! :) I will describe that there were few more rebellion's survivors beside you, so we could introduce some new characters in future if there will be such need (i.e. as hirelings or replace characters), but let's not pay attention to them right now, and threat them as "background crowd".
When you were still in the cages on the back of the giant, mechanical pterodactyl, you noticed that its crew was very sparse, especially considering the number of prisoners transported. But you were also sure of one thing: they were not ordinary people. They were all dressed in identical outfits: a dark green tunic, a cloak of the same color, a hood and a mask. All the masks were exact copies of themselves and represented the muzzle of a jackal. This puzzled you greatly, because the way the enemy crew moved and performed all actions was incredibly organized and systematic. At the same time, you never managed to determine whether your captors had any hierarchy and whether any of them had a higher rank than the others. In your presence, they communicated only with gestures. Although some of you noticed that when they were away from the cages, sometimes they seemed to talk briefly among themselves, but always and exclusively when there were two people. It undoubtedly puzzled you - not to say worried to the bone - deeply: what kind of organization could it be, that could train people to such degree of obedience and adherence to... procedures? Plans? Habits? Some of you simply couldn't even find the proper word to describe the vibe the pterodactyl's crew had projected on you....

Each of you was led out of the cage separately, tied under arms with a rope, unceremoniously pushed off the deck of the mechanical beast and slowly lowered down until your feet touched the ground. Then you would start to feel an unpleasant tugging, which was a clear signal that it was time to untie yourself form the rope.

When the last of you had untied yourself, the next thing that went down the rope was Sadur's dog - Silver- in a big sack. The dog was also connected to another mystery, as for some reason it was treated much better than the humans during the flight. He had a separate cage of his own, and he certainly got better food than all the other prisoners. None of you saw any of your captors ever eat or drink anything. Although they could certainly do it below deck.

Even before you felt the ground beneath your feet... the first thing that hit you was a wave of hot, muggy air pouring from the heated ground and the incredibly developed vegetation. With every meter separating you from the ground, consumed by your descent, you felt that you were being absorbed... swallowed... by one large organism made up of millions of types of plants and animals. This organism was commonly called: the Jungle - and you couldn't help or do anything against it, but to became a new... fragile... unwelcome part of it.

When you started looking around to see where exactly you are, for any particular signs in the wall of vegetation surrounding you in a tight circle, you noticed that the mechanical monster that had brought you here was not flying away still... it was hanging in the sky and seemed to be waiting for something.

After a few moments, those with the best sense of sight noticed in the rays of the setting sun that something was clearly happening on board the flying pterodactyl. Some commotion. A bang. Quick steps of many feet. Another bang. Someone shouted something... and then you saw a dark, rectangular shape of a size of a horse or bigger roll off the deck and start falling straight down at you still gathered in the center of a small clearing!

What do you do?
OOC:

For the time before "accident on pterodactyl", when you were gathering at the clearing:
All, please roll Detection(Per) or Wilderness Lore(Per!)
- so if you have Detection skill or Wilderness Lore skill: you roll Skilled Check for Perception (and you can use rerolls for that, but to be honest I wouldn't use them now;) ).
- if no skill: you roll just Perception Check.

(yes, I know that Wilderness Lore is normally with Int, but trust me it will make sense in a movement)

Then - for the time when you will write your current RP and react on something apparently falling on you - roll something that will be good fit for your action. I.e.:
- if you try to run from it: Acrobatics(Dex)
- make others run with advantage to safety: Leadership(Cha)
- protect someone from what is falling: Athletics(Con)
- pushing someone out of the way: Athletics(Str)
- doing something else: choose something on your own or ask I will help,

For the record: currently you don't have your weapons with exception of Bartholomew staff (apparently he played the role of old and helpless in convincing way) and Shallan's "Black Powder Weapon" (apparently our princes invention don't look as dangerous and they didn't even know what it is? ), but if she would use her BPW now - I think she is quite sure that The Captors would be immensely interested and even would risk to get back for her truly unique invention....

For the sake of making my/our life easier let's say you have the rest of your equipment with you now already:)

OOC:
Do you mean masks are all identical or they perfectly copy each personas features?

Also before I RP I'd like to better understand what my PC see/understands now . Let me try to explain my confusion:

- I have no idea what do you mean by "developed vegetation".
- Is " the Jungle" in your text is just a flavored description suggesting jungle impress city people, or is it indeed something more that a jungle we know in our world?
- How would my PC feel it is made up of millions of types of plants and animals, when he seen no animal yet?

Also I probably have to roll 2d20 for Wilderness Lore check. Rolling twice, DM to decide
[ +- ] WILD BORN

Rolls

Detection Per 9 <4, 14> - Check - (9, d20)

9 : () + 9 = 9

d20 : (2) = 2

Wilderness Lore Per 9 <4, 14> - Skilled Check - (10, d20, d20)

d20 : (1) = 1

d20 : (4) = 4

OOC:
Masks are identical to the very last detail. Some of you have spent some time observing guards and as they are sometimes with little different body build or height, the masks are perfectly identical. It would require amazing precision by the artisan to make them by hand to be so identical. Either they were made in different way or the maker is true master in his craft. (Your PCs are not aware of anything that functions on the principle of factories with conveyor belts in the World or something like this, to their knowledge they don't know how the mask could be made by other means.)

developed vegetation -> hight, tense trees, a lot of bushes, a lot of vine on it, occasional, exotic flowers, when you enter a tropical forest the vegetation will probably blok not small part of light coming in

the Jungle - similar to our jungle - tropical forests + some additions of how we imagine IRL: jungles looked in times of dinosaurs. So mosty "flavored description suggesting jungle impress city people"

"- How would my PC feel it is made up of millions of types of plants and animals, when he seen no animal yet?" -> I imagined your PC being at court has heard a lot of stories, and those about jungles too. Besides, the jungle is never silent: so descending on the ropes, you have heard a lot of birds and other non-defined sounds and noises of the jungle. Sorry, probably I should have written this down - about sound of animals, but probably it was too late and I was too tired :(

Yes, you qualify for adv here for sure. But I meant you should roll Detection OR Wilderness Lore, not both (just to clarify this), but as you have GS on both rolls(even more so on WL) - it doesn't matter in your case:)

As I'm not good in detailed descriptions of static environments, I will try to provide you with "mood picture" for each new environment:

Kimbek watches in horror as the dark shape descends upon them. "By the Gods, what is that?!" He looks around at the others and realizes the danger they are in. "Quickly, move out of the way!" He attempts to make his way out of the clearing, or at least out of the way of the falling object.

I'm sorry, probably I have complicated it a little too much:( But I will try to be clearer on our way - I promise:) Should have asked you for the Wilderness Lore/Detection roll with the firs post.

So now, to be clear - you all should have 2 rolls under your current post:
1. Wilderness Lore/Detection - for noticing something when you have touched the ground

2. Your roll for what you are doing in reaction to something falling on all of you.

So: @Shadowknight you should have a 2nd roll of Acrobatics(Dex) with your post because of: "he attempts to make his way out of the clearing, or at least out of the way of the falling object"

Belladonna is quickly distracted from assessing their landing area by the noise and scuffle above them. Whatever was landing was something their captors did not like and the enemy of your enemy is a friend. Hopefully it was just supplies or things to aid them instead of a living being.

Ideally, they would figure out how to help this thing land, but she was never trained to do such things. She throws whatever soft thing she has like a bedroll or cloak to the area where the thing will land to try and break its fall while trying to encourage others to do so as well before she dives out of the way.

In those first few seconds, Bartholomew takes stock of his surroundings Unskilled Perception check. Considering their captors, he pondered the costumes of their abductors. Using the jackal as their symbol? Bartholomew wracked his memories for any reference of jackals in both the divine scriptures and the general body politic Rolling both Divine Lore and General Lore checks. If they worship or value the canine form, that may explain the dog's treatment, he mused. Bartholomew breathed a sigh of relief when he sees Shalla unharmed and being comforted/protected by Belladona and others. As he makes his way over to the rest of the abductees, Bartholomew loosens the collar of his robe. The palace was comfortable and the monastery was in the mountains. This heat and humidity is veritably palpable. Although, they do say that the heat is good for an old man's joints he thinks with a smile.

A bang, a crash, and a shout alerts him to a falling object. Instinctively, Bartholomew leaps to wrap the princess in his arms and roll with her out of the way Athletics check. As he lunges for her, he thinks to himself Leaping INTO the path of the falling object, what we do for love.

Resolving situation - your awareness rolls - when you touched the ground, before the commotion above happened.

Roll results (writing it down for system learning purpose, will not do that later in the game):
- Kimbek: Wilderness Lore (Per) -> normal fail(NF)
- Shallan: Per -> NF,
- Sadur: Wilderness Lore (Per) -> GS with Nat 1!
- Belladonna: Per -> NF
- Bartholomew: Per -> NF

Only Sadur succeed and with great degree, so only he will get the info. To, maybe use it now or share it later with others: in-character.
Next post coming in a moment - resolving the current situation.
Being on the new land for the first time, feeling the tall grass catching on the cuffs of your pants or the bare skin on your legs, realizing how small you all are in comparison to surrounding trees and bushes most of you feel overwhelmed at first. Crushed by the amount of greenery and its density. Almost choked by the amount of smells. Trying to adjust your ears to new, never heard, yet muffled sounds. Most of you.

But not Sadur. Was it his sturdy dwarven nature? The ruthless training that every member of the Mountain Clans goes through? Or his wilderness rooted deep in his eyes and soul of Barbarian? That he never lost, even though he was at the court for so many years already? Either way: after he kissed the ground, he immediately raised his body back, still crouching and observing, wondering: why here? Is there anything special about this clearing?

Ok! So let's go with this! :)
It was a little, but very perceptive Belladonna who was first realizing what is happening onboard the flying pterodactyl and that apparently one of the heavier containers is about to fall straight on them. But why? They could have killed them at any time during their journey to this wild place. Lead by an inexplicable premonition she felt that she has to protect its contents more then run away immediately. But what she could do in those split seconds that were left before the container will roll off the deck and start fall on them? Apparently panicked, she tried to take her pillow out from her backpack and throw it at the place of container was supposed to fall. Shocked - when she realized what she had just done - she opened her mouth to warn others... then raised her head, to only realize - with eyes even wider and bigger than usual - that she is standing right in the center of the impact of already falling container...

And what is even worse... the person she swore to protect with her life... Princess Shallan has noticed the falling container much too late, cleaning her eyes from still falling tears... now her leg entangled in the high grass next to her and is also unable to move... loosing her last hopes and scolding herself for repressing the survival instinct... she starts to experience the world to move in slow motion... first completely still, but then - against all odds - starting to change with each blink of her eyes...

First she notice Brother Bartholomew run with the speed of a stone thrown from the best sling in the world, towards the princess Shallan. With the precision that only monks who have trained all their lives can achieve, he places his stick between the grass and the Princess's tangled leg, performs an elegant turn around its own axis and finally breaks the blades of grass like some insignificant strings, liberating her leg completely with one smooth motion... [GS for you:) ]

When he was about to jump towards princess Shallan to cover her with his body - within second blink of Belladonna's eye - from the other side, she notice a brown shape approaching with similarly magnificent speed and turbulences of charging boar. Sadur. It seemed as he would almost feel the whole situation through the ground already. He didn't have to think. Not even force any amount of will on his body. It reacted by itself... doing exactly what has to be done. He grabs Balladona mid-run with one arm and a split seconds later: princess Shallan - with the other, throwing her on his big, muscular shoulder. Finally he corrects his momentum a few degrees to the left, directly at Bartholomew, hits him with all his accumulated force and push all three of them successfully outside the area of impact, basically throwing much lighter girls in the bushes [nat 1 for you! ]...

Where his trusty and not weaker even a bit companion Kimbek was already standing... providing the princess and her companion with smooth landing and a charming smile.

What his instincts didn't calculated into the whole rescue action - was that, after the throw ( when he used all the strength he got)... unfortunately he fell flat on the ground... leaving him prone... while the wooden container continued its fast movement towards the surface...

Observers closed their eyes to not experience the crashing of brave dwarf's body...

...only to open them when they heard sudden sound of metal stretched to its limits! Fallowed by loud and desperate squeak of something hit by the force of elasticity and container inner wall.

Those were the chains! Container was still attached to deck by the chains on one of its sides! And one of its corners, stopped JUST few centimeters above Sadur's head.

But no one knows how long the chains or their attachment to container will last... with container swinging dangerously just above Sadur... shaken by sudden movements of something being inside of it...

What do you do? And feel about the situation?
OOC:
Wow... this post become much more longer than I thought it will be... but Belladonna's idea with bedrolls ignited my imagination immensely... :) The future ones will be shorter and shorter, I promise! :)

Shallan takes a deep breath, as the object stopped, before it's creaking groans indicated the danger wasn't over. "Come On!" and scurries out of the way, dignity long forgotten at this point.

Although it had been many decades since Bartholomew last saw the halls of the monastery, his disciplined daily training regimen had developed a set of instinctual muscle memories that was able to stimulate the spinal cord without explicit direction from the brain. As he leapt into the air—beard flying one way, hands the other—Bartholomew intuited the princess's plight. She was trapped by insidious vines or grasses that did not let her flee the impact zone! If he were to hit her, as he first intended, he could shatter her bones! Without conscious thought, he curled his body mid-leap and extended his staff. With a deft twist of his wrists Bartholomew was able to leverage the force of his jump to snap the vegetation without harming the princess. He landed in a roll, immediately desperate to snatch the princess from the disaster. As he arose, he saw the dwarf (whom he had not recognized) barrel into the clearing at full speed, grab Belladonna and the princess, and then aim directly at him. Bartholomew's eyes widened as the raw force of the dwarf and his inertial bowled him over, being off-balance from the leap, and straight out of the impact zone.

As the three of them hit the ground, a hideous shriek of straining and failing metal was heard, The container had stopped mere inches from the dwarf's prone body. Had they all been standing there, they would have been crushed to a pulp!

Princess, are you all right?, Bartholomew asked. He quickly looked her over for signs of trauma or mistreatment First Aid (Apothecary) Roll.

His immediate concern for the princess's well-being satisfied, Bartholomew rushed over to the dwarf and helped him crawl out from under the swaying container. As the dwarf got up, Bartholomew said I believe we owe you our lives, brave sir. I am Brother Bartholomew, advisor to our beloved King Leonidas. I presume you as well must support the rightful king if you are marooned with us. Forgive me, but I am at a loss to recognize you. How are you addressed?

At this point, Bartholomew registered the strange noises coming from inside the box. We had better see what is in there before the rebels fly away. We need all the resources we can amass if we are going to survive, let alone make it back home and return the rightful king, or his heir—at this point, Bartholomew looks sadly at Shalla— to the throne.

In all the tumult, Bartholomew could not remember anything about jackals in either religion or politicsNormal Failure on both checks in prior post. He would have to ask his companions at a suitable time. But first, survival.

Princess Shallan get back from her knees with the grace of a princess, only disturbed a little by quite a few pieces of grass and leaves in her fairy hair. Hearing Belladonnas recommendation of hiding behind a tree leaves her completely clueless as there are like few dozens of threes around them and she don't even recognize about which tree her trusty companion is talking about. Not to mention the fact, that it wasn't so obvious if she really was going to hide now, or not.

This confusion on princess face draws Bartholomew attention, making him worried for a brief second, but soon his worry fades away when he notices how stable and brisk princesses steps are. He's quite sure that everything is well with her, for now...

Together with Belladonna, Bartholomew help their savior - Sadur, who rolled in their direction - to get up from the ground practically getting him out of falling container's danger. Although to be be honest... Belladonna's help looked more like hanging on Sadu's shirt's sleeve when the massive dwarf raised from the ground, exchanging greeting handshake with Brother Bartholomew.

During this time Kimbek was trying to asses what is the state of survivors. To his satisfaction, he found that the vast majority of the survivors had sustained no additional injuries. But one specific thing caught his attention.
Pedrop sent a note to Shadowknight
Then you all hear strict, but fluent and calm voice of Kimbek ordering everyone to get to the sides of the clearing, out of the danger of severed container and what can be inside of it. Many faces has risen surprised by the strength of his words and will - to check who is giving orders. Some even started to wonder who he is, as they thought that there is only one member of King's family with them, who traveled with them onboard their bloody air transport. The words had immense impact on them and everyone from The Rest took his orders to heart, fulfilling his recommendations immediately.
OOC:
The Rest is mentioned group of 6 survivors, king's loyalists that were traveling with you on giant pterodactyl to this place. If you have some ideas who that can be, you can add 1-2 persons during your future interactions, after the situation with container will be resolver. We can use them as hirelings or backup PC's later. Or keep them as The Rest for some longer peroid of time, and see whom they will become for our game:) They will not necessary always travel with you... :)
Being in relative safety, someone from The Rest shouted, apparently not being able to hold his curiosity or excitement:
"What, the heck, is going on with this container? They wanted to provide us with some supplies or just kill us?!?"

As in reaction to his words you see that the wooden container is starting to rise, apparently lifted up somehow by the flying pterodactyl crew... The big box is visibly severed, but still holding on and Something inside it starts to make even more ruckus then before.

What do you do?
OOC:

From 3rd round it will be d10 and so on, until d6 (last roll, and the chains will hold on from now on). When the container or chains brake, those under it are in danger of some damage. Being heigh enough above ground is usually also dangerous... ;)

Due to Kimbek bad roll, he can't find even a little stone that he could use as something hard. But he - and any others that were looking - notice that if there ever were any stones on the clearing, they are all gone now, as someone would move them out. I envision that you are helping the princess too now.

Bartholomew: please roll for Int (as you don't have relevant skills or background) to see if you figure out what is better approach to brake the box,

Belladona action doesn't require roll as the container is still low above the ground, but she will be holding on it's side, so if she will stay this way, she will have to roll for Con +2 (due to chains) to hold on next turn. ALSO: due this additional weight on the container I will roll -1 step die at the end of 2nd round.

Shallan: please roll Dex (no proper skill or background) with advantage due to help from Bartholomew and Kimbek. It will be 14,2d20L1 dice code for the roller for you. To be able to climb fast and safely on top of the container, where the chain holder is. You will be able to attempt unfixing next round. If you will end on top of the container, that will be another -1 step to die that will check if container or chains broke due additional weight:)

Sadur: it's certainly stressful situation for your dog too, please narrate/define what your dog was doing after you helped him out of the sack and what you are trying to achieve now - taking care about him. Then roll Will(I think it can be used here, due to your background) or Cha - whatever you feel will be better for the situation. Also due your background you could use re-roll on this, but you have to judge if it is worth to use it so early :)

After getting the rolls I will narrate what happened and we will move to round 2.

[ +- ] Roll results summary
Bartholomew[GS!] takes a moment to asses the container. Its walls look severed, but not from roll or fall of the container itself - it didn't hit anything in the end of a day. Its walls are severely beaten by the Thing inside of it - it certainly wants to get out. To pray it open indeed some heavy object or even better an axe would be needed. But it can be doable by some kicks or heavy blows from someone really strong. It would be even better if someone or something would continue to hit the walls from the inside... but how to encourage this?
OOC:
Mechanicaly: disadvantage on Str related checks without proper tool or idea how to increase someones natural strength, but one hit would be enough. Caution: TF would bring d2 damage to the hitter here!
The chains attachment looks much more promising. It seams as the whole container is hanging on one, not fully tightened screw.
OOC:
Mechanically: it will be skilled check for Traps & Locks(Dex - as she is on hanging container) for Shallan or someone else to do it. TF means she will fall off the container.
Sadur[GS!] calls his trusty dog to him in order for the dog to be safe from what could happen with barely hanging container. The dog is apparently very well trained, as even in such unusual and stressful situation it obeys his master without a flinch, running immediately and sitting next to Sadur - like every good dog should.
OOC:
Mechanically: GS means you don't have to roll for Silver obeying you in this scene anymore. It remains completely under your control in terms of normal activities/tasks a dog would do. You can ask him even for something risky or unusual for a dog ONCE, but that will end your "automatic control" over the dog.
Shallan with a help of Kimbek and Bartholomew climbs the container without visible problems, get's to it's top, catches the chains and is ready to act, probably using her craft - that some used to criticize while they were still at the court. Her hair flowing with the container swings and little breeze, makes a perfect picture for someone that could be called The Artifcer Princess... in the future, if she will live long enough to become such legend.

Meanwhile Belladonna with a short run up, and a graceful jump catches and holds on to the container edge. She tried to look heavy and act as one. But even to her surprise - her weight was enough for the chains or their attachment to make another loud groan.

But she hears something else. As soon she attached herself to the container, she hears a muffled by the walls, but well hearable sniffing and then loud squeak. She knows those sounds way too well! She is now sure: it's Pipper, her Dryosaurus mount inside of it!
"But how?!?" - probably she thinks.
OOC:
End of round 1.

In the meantime - of our heroes desperate attempts to keep the opportunity that the Fortune apparently have given them, for themselves - the container was risen another meter above the ground and seems to be lifted with greater speed with each breath.

Princess Shallan is standing on the top of container ready to act. Bartholemow and Kimber are just next to it, probably worried about princess safety. Belladonna is still holding to the container edge, but is visibly loosing her grip [and will fall in a moment due to TF, so no further climbing without reattaching to container again in some way!]. Sadur is standing at some distance from all this chaos, at north end of a clearing with his dog sitting and perfectly aligned in line next to him. With some of the people from The Rest.

What do you do?
OOC:
Actions and eventual moves for Round 2 - please. If Sadur is not interested in container he can do something else - in exemple act on the info he got from his "scouting" when you touched the ground.

As during this round both Shallan and Belladona are additional weight for the container I will roll d8(d12- 2 steps) to check if it has fall by itself - at the end of the round.
Round: 1 2
Container: 0,5m / 2 feet Container: 1,5m/5feet; d8(-2s)

In the heat of the moment, Kimbek attempts to take the situation in, though he is glad the princess reached the top of the container safely.

"Do you think you can get it off the chain?" he calls up.

He allows an idea to form in his mind, realizing that his connection to the Spirit is not as distant as it once was.
OOC:
Letting a round go by in case someone else can do something here. But will probably try to spellcraft in the next round or two if we can't get it.
Sep 11, 2024 3:42 pm
Bartholomew takes in the situation, intuiting the possibilities. Princess, the corner chains all attach to one yoke, and that fastener is loose! he calls out. Faster, your highness, the crate is rising!
OOC:
If I still also have my sling, please consider the following. Otherwise, disregard.
As he speaks, he grabs a stone from the ground and places in his sling. Envisioning horrible thoughts of Shallan falling to her death, he feels he must hurry the failure process along. But, being no sharpshooter, he may hit the princess. If I fire, I may hit her, I may miss the weak point, or I may bring it down. If I do not, the likelihood of her falling to her death definitely increases. Forgive me, but I am going to take the shot.
DUCK, PRINCESS, Bartholomew screams.

@Avraham as I said in one of previous posts: all of you don't have your weapons from your sheets (but soon there will be opportunity to get them - after resolving the situation with container) with exception of Bartholomew's staff and Shallan's Black Powder Weapon. So you don't have your swing right now. Apart from everything it would be very hard to hit the chain attachment with a swing - I would only count it on GS.

But as you still have a staff and you are a monk, you can try to "wall run" on container and make a desperate attempt to hit the screw with the tip of your bo. The consequence will be that container will start to swing from round 3, making harder any further operations on it...:) I think you have two options here:
1. Force solution -Trying to hit hard the yoke with your bo: make an attack against it with AC 13. On a hit, you can do a Major Exploit on it (unscrew it in the process)-> roll Luck(Dex)+1(due to Belladona presence) on a success you will manage to do it, but reduce your Luck resorce by 1. On fumble(nat 1) -> you hit princess instead....

2. As you are a monk, I would allow you to use 1 of your Monk Techniques ability uses, but you still will have to roll Acrobatics(Dex) skilled check. On TF you throw off Princess instead....

Both options makes container start to swing. You can always try to climb the container this round and do your monk things next round -> no swinging.

You still have move and action as you only said something to princess. We ignore sling for now.

@spinningdice just remainder: as this was Skilled Check you can use one of your Rerolls to make the roll again - once. Still have your Move, but using it would rather require you go off the container.

@quilltid Belladona lets go the container due your nat 20, from previous post already. But you still have your Action and Move. Last chance to try again to climb the container from the ground being a halfling... or maybe you want to roll Animal Lore(Cha) as it seems you encourage Pepper to get out the container. On a success you get your mount, but not other content of the container:) Or you want to do something else? :)

Kimbek moves a safe distance away where he is no longer in the way and sits in a meditative state.
OOC:
If the box is not free by the end of the round, Kimbek does the following: Casting Infuse Animus
He begins moving his hands in a circular motion, and small sparkling motes of energy surround them after a very short while, then he directs those motes in a ray of gleaming light towards one of the chains.
OOC:
Great Success
Suddenly a surge of light pulses through Kimbek's body, following the ray with a dazzling sparkle that pulses into one of the other chains as well. The chains begin to move on their own, thrashing violently against their restraints.

OOC:
DDM: Rubbery Tentacle Beard for 1d6 days
As the energy pulses through Kimbek's face, it glows briefly for a moment before the lower part of it morphs into an unsightly grasping mass of tiny rubbery tentacles. He does not seem to notice at first, as he is focused on the energy moving through his body and doing his best to direct it towards the chains.

First of all, thank you, @Pedrop, for the very clear and comprehensive descriptions and options. I really appreciate it. Bartholomew is going to try and launch himself onto the container using his staff so as not to have it swinging, and perhaps to hold the princess and cradle her fall should they need to jump. So this will combine move and action, where the action will be to propel himself with his arms while "climbing" the staff. Since Barth gave Shallan a boost, I consider that he is, while not directly under it, close enough that there is no room for a running start. So he's going to try something…different. He is going to plant his staff in the ground, "climb" it until he is about 3/4 up, grab the top, and perform something like the launch of a pole vault, but without a long run-up. I envision it as throwing his waist and legs out half-way and then using the muscles of his arms to propel himself upwards and complete the roll so that he lands on his feet (one half rotation from release) on the top of the container. I think this combines Acrobatics and Athletics, and Bartholomew is skilled in both. I will roll both, and let you decide which to use, if any modifiers apply, and how masterfully or disastrously this resolves :). Also, if it requires AD/DIS let me know and I'll re-roll. Obviously, if I do anything wrong, please correct me. Also, I reckon that Bartholomew did not have the luxury of seeing what Kimbek and Shallan have done, since we are all moving simultaneously.
Bartholomew deeply regretted the rebels having taken his sling. Nevertheless, something had to be done. Sadly, there was no time for him to move back and take a running start. "Climbing the Mountain" was not an option. However, he had his will, his wisdom…and his staff. It had been many years since he had performed "Ascending the Pillars unto Heaven", but the princess was in danger, there was no time to wait!

With a grunt, Bartholomew slammed his staff into the ground and started rotating his feet in circles whilst barely touching the staff, his hands sliding up and down the staff as well. More friction on the down strokes, less on the upstrokes, faster and faster Bartholomew moved, until his arms and legs were pumping in a blur and he seemed to literally glide up the staff! When his hands reached the top, and his feet were now about halfway up, he tightened his abdominal muscles, pulled his legs up to his chest, and with a might shout kicked them out perpendicular to the ground and used his hands to propel his body up and over the staff. His legs to the sky, his beard to the ground, Bartholomew bent at the waist and pulled his upper body up into itself to enhance the rotational effect, grabbing his legs behind his knees. He was aiming to land on his feet on the top of the container.

As he was in the air, he sensed a surge of power pass him in the air and suddenly a fearsome rattling was heard from the container he was fast approaching! Bartholomew, sensing he was the container was near, tensed his body and prepared to land.

If the others are successful in getting the container onto the ground, Belladonna will jump as far out of the way as possible, maybe behind a tree, to prevent injury or being in the way of other's escape. She will also give the help action to Shallan if needed to escape safely from being on top of the box if Bartholomew has not already done so.

"You are all absolutely amazing!"
If they are not successful, Belladonna will instead call to the other NPCs to help pull down on the container together.

"Come on, we must aid the princess!"

[ +- ] Rolls summary
As this is PbP as some of your actions contradicts a little each other... I will take some liberty to change what you described to make it a better fit for what you rolled and work with each other, but please tell me if at anytime I will go too far. I hope there always be only a little changes.

@Shadowknight please change your DDM counter to 2 on your sheet. Also deactivate your Spellcraft checkbox - so we will know, that you have used this ability until next short rest. As we have written you focused this turn, and cast your spell next turn - but due your GS I will provide you with fun opportunity :) - in my next post in the moment.

@Avraham I love your description, but I think it has to be a "mechanical cost" for the epic deed you just made (also you tried to bypass container swinging.... :) ). So due your GS, nat 1 I will say that you manage to climb on your staff and also get from it onto the container, but you have to cross of one use of Monk Techniques. Please note it on your sheet. As - in my mind - currently we are in "tutorial area" I will let it pass, but in the future for actions like this you would have to develop/learn/recall "Heaven’s Leap" Monk's technique - so probably next level:)

@GreyWord yes, I also imagined this mechanical pterodactyl to be able to hover mid-air like helicopter, but it's the chains that are retracted up, not the flying machine that is lifting up itself. Apparently they are afraid about aircraft stability before continuing their journey, as they defenitly were about to leave the are before the container fell. But I will try to use your attempt in useful way:)
As princess Shallan frantically tries to unscrew the only chain still holding the container above the ground, others could see magnificent show of grace and power provided surprisingly by - not so young - Brother Bartholomew, who managed to climb on vertically positioned, dug in ground staff of his own and propel himself with a nice flip onto the container.

While his feet touched the uneven surface of the container, just next to princess, making her another - this time much more angrier - attempt to fight off the holder, he hears the loud shout from the just met dwarf - Sadur.

The strong voice of short but bulky dwarf seam to attract some attention from the crew above, as Belladona notice that the shadow casted on them from the flying giant has grown a little on one side with a shape of a man leaning over the edge of their aircraft. Maybe because of that or maybe because of seeing Bartholomew already on the container with a princess, she instinctively moves away from the container, feeling that its chains are about to give way.

Sadur sees that it's one of jackal masked man checking why they are shouting so much or... just checking how the situation with container looks.

Meanwhile Kimbek seeing the dire situation was at some distance trying to focus immensely, calling some of his inner powers.

Only when he was about to feel very ready to unleash the power he accumulated in himself he hears the loud crack of the container hitting the ground, breaking in half and princess Shallan and brother Barholomew still holding to the chains. Swinging a little with the apparent skills of the seasoned monk, and landing quite gracefully next to Belladonna. [thanks to Barth's GS and being there]
OOC:
And of round 2 and "structured encounter". We go back to normal time flow - without rounds/turns.

For careful observers it's obvious that Kimbek just did something extraordinary, as if some kind of power flew between him and the chains that were holding the container just a moment ago. Fraction of seconds later the same observers would notice that chains start to move, as if they had taken on a life of their own.
OOC:
Expecting some of Shadowknight's narration after this, as described in OOC thread.
The rest of you (including The Rest) is probably more focused on broken container laying in front of them. After few seconds of silence, that probably made Belladonna's heart pounding much harder and faster, one could hear a slow, yet increasingly violent movement in one of the halves of the box that was cracked in half. Then the green snout of a fairly small - considering the amount of noise it made - dinosaur emerged from the broken crate.
OOC:
@quilltid if you can/want - please narrate how is Pepper behaving now and how your reunion with it looks like. If not, tell me - I will try to think something up.
Feeling that the danger of container is no more and that giant, mechanical pterodactyl and its crew is about to depart from the area - as soon they will asses their status after the recent events - the party scrambles around the clearing deciding what to do next.

What do you do?
OOC:
@GreyWord I think it's great opportunity to share or use the info your PC gathered with your first perception roll here.

Shallan breathes heavily a moment, that was... more exertion than she'd done in a long time, though given the situation it's likely to become a frequent occurrence. She grins at Belladonna, in part happiness for her, but in part hysterical reaction to the realisation of how dangerous that had been. "I'm so glad we managed to retrieve Pepper. Your... um wellbeing is important to me."

The moment over she takes stock of the situation, none of her other family appear to be here, with a slight pang she can only imagine the worse and again briefly wonders why she wasn't just executed. She addresses the group "Most of you know I'm not one for speeches and I never even really wanted to rule, but I will not let the sort of person who did this to us get away with it, and I would appreciate the help of those who either are, or will surely become my closest friends and advisors." she indicates the small group, trying to put on a confident air even as she wishes she'd listened more in lessons on public speeches, but on the other hand, it's hardly a survival skill... more exercise and combat training would likely have been a better investment.

Brother Bartholomew cradles Shallan as the crate descends with a crash, depositing her lightly on her feet. About to ask after the princess's well-being, Bartholomew relaxes listening to her royal highness begin to take the measure of leadership. She has the potential to be a leader worth following, should we all survive. His back twinges slightly. Oooh, that is going to hurt in the morning. I am no longer a youngster of 40, he thinks as he stretches.

Gazing into the split container, he spies a familiar snout. Or was it a snoot?, and smiles widely as Belladona is reunited with her beloved Pepper. Belladona, not only am I glad for the two of you to have each other, we must be practical. Mobility in the jungle will be of great value. As would carrying capacity, if needed.

Bartholomew moves closer to the now-broken crate to see if there is anything else worth salvaging. Even sharp shards of metal can be bound onto the edges of branches or reeds for makeshift spears and knives.
Sep 17, 2024 2:45 am
As Belladonna sees Pepper's green snout and playful eyes poke out of the broken half of the container, she squeals and runs as fast as her little legs can carry her to wrap her arms around the dryosaurus.

"Oh my darling, what are you doing here? I'm so happy, but so worried..."

She beams at each of the others, grateful for all they've done to bring Pepper to safety.

"My eternal thanks my lady. May Pepper and I serve you well as we return you to your throne. Your wellbeing is very important to us as well."

Belladonna gives the most formal of curtseys to Shallan, but also looks up and gives a wink to the princess before she gently leads Pepper away from the debris so they are out of the way as the others investigate the crate and Kimbek controls the chain.

"Yes, you are right Brother Bartholomew. Let me see how Pepper is doing and in what capacity she can help us."

She then turns to whisper soothing words to Pepper and confirm she is unharmed. Despite all that has occurred, Pepper seems to be more hungry than anything, nosing at Belladonna's hands as though she must be hiding a treat from her.

After ascertaining Pepper's health, Belladonna focuses on Princess Shallan's words and feels tremendous hope that her charge will be a great leader once they return to the kingdom. She raises her fist and tries to lead the others into a cheer.

"Huzzah! Princess Shallan the Valiant!"
Sep 17, 2024 6:40 am
Kimbek stands slowly, allowing his body to recuperate from the energy that had rapidly transited through him. He walks over to the others, allowing the chains to quieten and roll themselves into loose coils.

"Well, it seemed my efforts were a moment too late and a trifle too strong. But I am glad you are satisfied with everyone's efforts."

He looks over the broken container to see if anything could be salvaged from ruins.

Shallan nods to Belladonna with a smile that she only half feels and joins Bartholomew and Kimbek in searching through the wreckage, maintaining her tools and improvising new ones may be about to become far more than a hobby, and her blast-spear more than just a curiosity.

Shadowknight says:

OOC:
Allow me to develop it a little further... I have added Blackjack to the possible items because of what Sadur did.
But as Kimbek don't see what is currently on the deck - being many feet below it - the chains seam to try to catch something blindly not understanding the precise command of their master. Then a new idea comes to Kimbek's mind and the will to give jackal masked crew a little pay back. He concentrates on the one crew member that was lured by Sadur shouts and is currently leaning over flying machine edge and visible. The chains behaving like a high, but lean, giant, metal snake immediately bends towards their new target, as they would just noticed him. They rush towards him, wrap around him, shakes him like a toy and toss back at the aircraft deck. Fortunately, in the process they shaked some item out of him that falls north from the clearing.
OOC:
WIll continue, general post in next post.
Sep 18, 2024 8:34 am
After strange(for observers onboard flying pterodactyl) events with a chains and throwing one of their own across the deck, the crew apparently decided not to retract last chains that were left after the container and start departure of their sky vehicle towards destinations known only to them.

What is welcome by all (including the Rest) with another cheer, repeated after Belladonna's:
"Huzzah! Princess Shallan the Valiant!"

On the question of his master, Silver sniff the air few times becoming a little tense for a moment, but relax quickly and wages his tail again. Apparently not sensing anyone nearby. After they both made a few steps towards north, Sadur indeed see that the clearing from this side is much less dense and provides something that could be called as an entrance to the forest undergrowth. Not interested in the container he makes few more steps entering the forest, just to notice that there is quite visible path leading from the clearing further into the forest and a small, single-person hut that could only serve as shelter from the occasional rain, being too small to even spread out a bed and sleep in. Silver noticing it too, readies itself to approach the hut and sniff around.
OOC:
Rolling to see what have you find in the containers. Looks like you have found: Mirror and Holy Symbol. Interesting... :)
PLEASE: tell me who will take them and note them on your sheet. Both can go into puch.
After careful examination of both container halves you collectively deduced that the possible scenerio could be like this:
- Pepper not closed in her pen [thanks for that quilltid! :) ] anymore had to sneak out of it, after Belladonna have left the barn, attracted by the commotion in the court.
- Smart, but distressed animal fallowed her master scent keeping some distance, only to be distracted by the delicious smell of food and rations from one of the open containers, probably Pepper's favorite delicacy was also in that container.
OOC:
quilltid: maybe you will describe us what it is? :)
- as captors where certainly in a lot of hurry, had to close the animal in the container not even knowing about this,
- tasty food and treats has kept Pepper calm for the most of the journey, but when she felt that Belladona is leaving the aircraft she fell in panic, and was a cause of container falling down. Almost crashing you, but fortunately it all ended not so bad.

The good news are: there were food, rations and bedrolls in the container - as the Jackals would prepare for some remote mission or invasion too.

The bad news is: most of the food was eaten by Pepper and you are only left with some dry rations. In the amount of about supplies for 5 days for each person among you and the Rest.
OOC:
What a coincidence!!! ;-D
Most of the bedrolls are in good shape too. There you find a few touches too. And full waterskin for each of you.
OOC:
You can take more then 1 Torch if you want, but everything takes encumbrance.
Happy about the food, but a little disappointed that there wasn't anything more significant in the container, you are about to leave it and get back on the clearing, when one of you notice a small box hanged and camouflaged in top right corner of container. After opening it you find a Mirror and Holy Symbol of One True God.

This surprise you a lot! You start to wonder if there could be an agent of Church among the jackals? Hiding his mirror and the artifact of his or her faith in this "common container"?

Prudent Bartholomew, however, does not give up and decides to check the scattered remains of the container itself. He finds 2k6 nails and k6 chain holders that can work as pitons.
OOC:
Roll and note on your sheet if you take them. Tiny items -> pouch.
Meanwhile Belladonna checks Pepper and notice that she only have some scratches, nothing serious. But what she initially took as hunger is something completely opposite: Pepper is overeaten to the limit. It will take her some time before she will be fast as nimble as before.
OOC:
@quilltid please roll 2d8 to see how much HP will Pepper have. I would say it will be at minimum of 8, but you can roll higher:) Pepper will have 1 damage on her. And due being overeaten she will move at half speed for a few days. Please note all of this on your sheet.
You can feel and see that the night is very close and gather again to decide what to do next?
OOC:
Mechanicaly the Evening Shift (6pm - 10pm) just begun, so you have to decide if you risk night trip through the forest during the night -> fallowing the path Sadur discovered or you stay near the landing clearing and spend night here. Or... maybe you have some other ideas?

I would love some nice RP here from you, but if most will prefer that: we can skip that until morning... only after checking if something happened during the night:)

This will be a nice opportunity to check how the group is capable of decision making:) If it will prolong for too much, we will try my meta rule of designating one player as Decision Maker and then, moving that position to the next player in rotation

After gathering whatever supplies were due him, Kimbek turned towards the others. "What is our next plan of action? I feel like we should make our way to some safer place for the night. I am not certain these environments are suitable for resting in."

As evening descends upon them, Kimbek swiftly moves to light a torch. "At least we have enough of these for a while." He is startled by the whooping sound of some night creature (a bird?) in the distant foliage. "And let us hope that we encounter nothing significantly larger as we make our way out of this place."

"I'm willing to listen to suggestions, but for the moment it seems we have ample firewood here" Shallan waves at the broken crate "and surely fire will keep away most of the forest creatures?" Shallan is trying to display confidence but wilderness survival is not her skillset... and she's tired now the adrenaline is dying down.
Sep 19, 2024 4:42 am
Bartholomew reviews the crate's contents. Thank the One True God, we have supplies. Quickly estimating the volume of material, he calls out please take five days worth of rations, a bedroll, and a torch. There is enough of those for us all. Bartholomew appropriates five rations, a bedroll, a torch, and a waterskin for himself. Looking more carefully, he realizes that the pieces of shattered chain could serve as nails or pitons/spikes. Given the need for survival, he takes everything he can get. He rolls the spikes into the bedroll and places the nails into his pouch.
OOC:
Character inventory will be updated (remove spare clothes and sling, etc.) after nails roll resolves. However, @Pedrop, does he have his healers kit? I mentioned in my initial post that I started carrying them on my person, but they may have been removed. Also, per the release of ToA (page 55), the default is for 5 torches to take one slot—subject to DM approval :D
Bartholomew notices with interest the mirror and symbol being looked at by Belladona and Shallan. I could not remember any reference to jackals in the religious history of the nation, but the One True God behind the rebels? Bartholomew racks his brains for any possible references in the scripture which may support the actions of the rebels.
OOC:
Rolling Divine Lore to see if there is a piece of information which I know which may help me understand why such an item would be carried by the rebels.
As everyone supplies themselves, Bartholomew takes a step back and surveys the immediate surroundings. Following the party to the hut, Bartholomew reflects on the conversation and suggests it is getting late, and traipsing through an unfamiliar—and likely deadly—environment in the dark of night strikes me as foolish. I think you all have good ideas. Even if this hut is too small in which to actually lie down, it serves as a point of reference that can be seen from a short distance. If we set up a fire near the hut, we have a location in which we can rest and from which to start tomorrow. However, we must set watches, and the watcher must sit with their back to the flames so as not to be night-blinded.

Looking at the assemblage, Bartholomew considers that only the core group can be trusted to watch faithfully. The other loyal retainers are either too frightened or too far lost in apathy. We need to break the night into three parts. I believe we have four capable guards, Sadur, Kimbek, Belladona, and myself. The princess must remain under guard—she may be the future of the kingdom. This means that once every four nights, one of us should get a complete night's sleep Bartholomew says with a smile. For tonight, I volunteer for the least desirable middle watch, unless someone else prefers it. Who will be taking first and last watch?

Belladonna joins the others to carry her share of rations, bedroll, waterskin, and torch. As she looks over the supplies that are left, she notices quite a few ginkgo nuts and half-eaten ginkgo fruits among the supplies the crate has spilled. She looks out of the corner of her eye at Pepper and now notices her tummy bulging. She was so focused on Pepper having a broken bone that she overlooked her sluggishness as exhaustion when it was actually overeating! Pepper must have been distracted when leaving her pen by the smell of her favorite snack. Enticed by a good meal, hunkered down behind the mounds of supplies, they must not have noticed her chewing away and sealed her in. She tuts a little and gathers the now discarded fruits and nuts up. Pepper can at least finish her meal later and the ginkgo nuts are seeds and could eventually be planted, whenever they settled down. In an emergency, the ginkgo nuts are medicinal and may be helpful to the others in making medicines.

Belladonna stops to look at the strange mirror and symbol secreted away in the crate when she is drawn away by what the others suggest for settling in for the night.

"I agree we should rest instead of getting lost in the dark. As you say my lady, a fire should keep away most skittish creatures and a watch is certainly advisable. I think splitting the watch into two 4-hour shifts should be suitable however. I doubt I could sleep longer than that considering our extreme change in surroundings." She sweeps a short arm around themselves.

"Even if we only move a little from where our captors dropped us, it would be better to be away from any food remains that may attract unwanted critters. I can certainly take the first watch as I will want to make sure Pepper and everyone settles in fine. Maybe we can see where Mr. Sadur went and if he found a good sleeping spot?"

OOC:
First: I will address earlier Bartholomew roll - here - about recalling any info about Jackals (both NF) and the recent one - looking for references in memory and the scripture -> GS, nat 1. I had noted that on my to-do list for this game, but haven't have time do so earlier. Sorry for that!
Still at the deck of their captors' aircraft Brother Bartholomew was trying to figure out what all of this could mean. He especially was drawn to the possible symbolism of crew's masks - all of them being an exact copy of the same shape - unmistakably reassembling the jackal's head. Unfortunately he didn't manage to recall anything significant from his memory, that in turn was based on the reports that came to his little office at the castle. In fact there was something about jackal's attacks in little town at the north-west border of the Kingdom, but initially he discarded it as someone's mistake... as he knew that literal jackal - the animal - don't live naturally in their country. Could it be a mistake in the description and the subject was actually right? Without his documents... he wasn't able to confirm anything of this.

Now when he was looking at their find in hidden box - a mirror and the symbol of One True God, he started to think that maybe he should start to look for some symbolic references in his scriptures. And in fact he remembered something: there is some references of Seth - the one of enemies of One True God - having the jackals as his messengers. But it don't make too much sense - for now - as Seth is an idol of chaos and wrongly understood unlimited freedom, where the captors you have encountered were almost inhumanly ordered and organized. So most probably, if religious symbolism should be used as parallel here - jackals are anything like friends to One True God. Besides - after re-examining the box where the two items where hidden Bartholomew is quite sure that the items were NOT meant to be found by the crew of the aircraft. Only the container crash made it discoverable without looking in this exact place.
OOC:
Fallowing is the effect of your Nat 1, GS. What induced a new idea in me...:)
While he was looking through the scriptures, Bartholomew came across an interesting fragment, where the mirror is described as important aspect of as an important aspect of achieving self-awareness and getting rid of hypocrisy, as one should first look at oneself before judging or lecturing others. This gave him the idea that the mirror they found might not be as ordinary as it looks.
OOC:
To all: Please tell me who - if any - is taking the mirror and holy symbol, and note it on their PC sheet!

Sadur open the door to the hut carefully. As this is very small hut, he finds only a small stool standing in the middle of it. In fact the hut is so small, that for someone with as broad frame as Sadur sitting on the stool - he would almost touch the walls of the hut with his arms. He notice that is a quite nice peace of furniture as it would by taken from much nicer or fancier place, having even some leaves carvings on it's legs. The hight of it is perfect for someone with shorter legs... in example for a dwarf. He notice also that if someone with similar height as himself would stand on the stool his head would be exactly at the level of a small window (more like cut out square in fact...) that is facing towards the clearing they have landed recently.
OOC:
Tell me if you are entering the hut, investigating further and how, Sadur? It will happen during Evening watch.

@quilltid I like your idea of ginkgo nuts:) Please write down 3 of them (tiny) on your sheet, we will use some potion brewing or crafting rules to do something useful with them later.

It looks to me that Belladona became our first Quartermaster (as on p. 135), please roll Cha (Leadership) so we will see how the organizing the camp went under your directions :) It will take you whole Evening watch.

Bartholomew is sleeping at the end of Evening watch and during Late Night. Then he is waken up for his Look Out(watch) during Pre Dawn(so thematic for a monk! :) ).

I will roll now to see who is taking the Look Out for the Late Night: 1-3 Sadur, 4-6 Kimbek. As I'm assuming that Bella will be tired from organizing the camp and taking care about Pepper. Princess Shallan is allowed to sleep whole night (10pm - 6am), but she can protest next time it that will be her wish:)

I will roll d20 and only on 20 there will happen something during the night - as this is your first night and the fireplace made with parts of container is apparently quite big.

After rolls:
It looks like Sadur is on Look Out for the Late Night, and then goes to sleep exchanging with Barth.

I will say that it qualifies everyone for a Short Rest:
https://i.imgur.com/O8g24rK.png
Allowing - if successful - Kimbek to recover his Spellcraft ability, Shallan her reroll, Barth his Monk ability. I don't recall Bella or Sadur using anything up, but can roll if needed.

We don't cross out any rations as I'm assuming that you have something to eat from what was left in the container.
With wise advices from Bartholomew, surprisingly strong personality (for such small body) and leadership of Belladonna[we will see about the effects after the roll :) ], helping hand and inspiration from princess Shallan herself, intelligent remarks of Kimbek and Sadur checking their environment the group started to prepare their first camp in the mysterious jungle in the middle of nowhere. At least from their perspective.

The group came to an agreement among themselves about the watches and prepare to get some well deserved rest, not being sure what is better: the cold and hard surfaces of the cages from the giant mechanical pterodactyl's back, or plump, dump environment of engulfing jungle surrounding them with unknown dangers and mysteries. Fortunately dried up a little by the strong flames of their first common fireplace fueled by the planks salvaged from the container.
OOC:
If anyone of you wants: please narrate what are you doing during the camp preparation or if you help Sadur with checking the hut or doing something else. If not, you can skip to morning and tell us what you propose/plan to do then.

Shallan almost protests that she can take a watch, but she's stressed exhausted and the adrenaline from reacting to the container has long since left her system, she barely makes a bed for herself before collapsing into it.
OOC:
Recover one GS one NS, but all I need to do is recover my re-roll.
She wakes up early and puts herself through some of the katas that Bartholomew tried to teach her years ago... her form is pitiable and her limbs quickly begin to ache, but it feels good to stretch and prepare herself for the day.

She joins the others for some breakfast, any compunctions about poor rations forgotten in her hunger.

A toy hut? Sadur look inside with a surprise and return to the party to inform about his finding.
With Silver by his side Sadur feel safe to take first watch. Although barbarian consider clearing to be a more appropriate place than a forest path, but he keep his opinion to himself and try to clear vines and bushes around the camp as much as possible.

As the refugees set up camp, Belladonna finds she has inherited the role of quartermaster, organizing the removal of resources from the crate and setting up of the camp. She is not really used to directing people, but for now she does have a vision of what they should be doing for their camp. Half the group organizes items from the crate into food, wood, and miscellaneous. They then transport the items to the new campsite. The other half go straight to the campsite and prepare it for sleeping. They collect debris and put it to the side, separating dry from wet that could be used for fire or shelter. At least it isn't raining so they can make a big fire to keep critters away and to keep everyone warm while they sleep on their bedrolls near the fire.

Once everything is transported to their new campsite and the fire started, she learns Kimbek can cook.

"Mr. Kimbek, can you direct some of us to make something to eat tonight?" She smiles at him and hands over the food items they found that are most likely to spoil first and save their rations. Even roasting the fruit would be better than eating it raw to prevent pathogens.

While everyone eats, she plays her flute and tells stories to provide entertainment before people go to sleep. She eats her fill of what is left and then focuses on finding a space for Pepper to sleep out of the way, but with still enough room to run if something bad does arrive overnight. Though she no longer has a brush to dry brush Pepper, she looks over her again to check for any injuries she missed and then plays a song to her on her flute that she used to play when they were on the road. She feeds the dinosaur the last of the ginkgo fruits, saving the ginkgo nuts for later.

As she prepares for bed, she takes a moment to release the watch to Sadur and discuss what he has seen. "Very odd Mr. Sadur. Maybe, as the shorter people here, we can look out of the hut tomorrow and see what they were looking at? Sounds like it was built to scout or hunt to me. You would know more though. Can you also be on the lookout for where we should go tomorrow to find water? Signs of animal tracks perhaps?"

She promptly lays on her bedroll near Pepper and falls into a dreamless sleep from exhaustion.
OOC:
Will check about what quartermaster does when I have access to the playbook tomorrow! Skipping short rest rolls. Assuming Bartholomew will take the mirror and holy symbol since he has been the one noticing and analyzing it so far.

I'm looking forward for DM to skip to morning and party to begin exploring the jungle

It looks that every recovery roll was at least successful, so you all should have your abilities recovered.
spinningdice - Shallan has now 2 rerolls available again. I recommend noting it on your sheet.

Belladonna's GS for the camp making leaves you all in great spirits for the coming journey and obstacles, so I would say that any of you could use this statement (creatively ) to get an advantage during the coming day. Also Pepper is now at full HP thanks to this. Rolling to check weather and will continue in the same post.
The night has passed without any new events. You all wake up relatively rested, with renewed energy for action. Among other things, this results in greetings and expressions of appreciation from the survivors commenting on the good organization provided by Belladonna.

After eating the last of the excess food rations you found among the remains of the container, you start packing and getting ready to go. After another inspection of the surroundings - this time in the light of the rising sun - you find that in the vicinity of the clearing, which seems to be at the bottom of a shallow basin, there is only a mini-hut and a relatively visible path leading from its door (now the place of your camp) towards the west. You realize that if you do not want to go in a random direction or in some other way check the area first - your best choice is to stick to the mysterious path, which in a natural way seems to connect the mini-hut... with what awaits you at the other end of it.

With the rising sun you can feel that today is going to be a very hot day, which apart from the high temperature may not be so bad and will dry out the stuffy air a bit and prevent any possible fog.

What do you do?
OOC:
Currently you are at Morning Shift/Watch (6am-10am). If you decide to travel up the path (it's rising a little ) please:
- say who is going first, and who last
- describe if you choosing any Travel Role as on p. 135 or here -> Guide role is not needed on the path
- how are you traveling: carefully, briskly, fast, slow and stuff like that? :)

For now it will be more like point-crawl, rather than hex crawl.

If you prefer to do something else: please do so, we will see if the amount of time it will take you will allow you to begin your journey in this shift or next.

OOC:
I'm reposting Avraham's post here as apparently he wanted it to happen only at the morning -> so others can act upon it if they want.

Avraham: I like this Rp very much, and I'm putting this scripture fragment to World Building Facts:)

Avraham says:
Sadur wakes Bartholomew at the appointed time. My thanks, Master dwarf, rest well. Bartholomew begins by performing his "morning" isometrics and exercises, keeping attention on the jungle. He manages to maneuver so his katas take him around the campfire, combining the watch with the disciplines needed to keep his skills fresh and sharp.
OOC:
Pause for recovery rolls.
One NS one GS. The only thing to restore, though, is the expended Monk ability, which is now restored.
His prompt going to sleep combined with his exercises have refreshed Bartholomew. Despite being years since he "Ascended the Pillars" he feels rejuvenated and is certain he could do it again if needed. Contemplating, he realized that he felt more at peace than he had been in a while. The rebellion and revolt had finally happened and was no longer a vague and uncertain lurking menace. He had a princess to support, open enemies to target, and a defined mission—Survive, Return, Restore the rightful dynasty to the throne—or die trying.

As Bartholomew ate some of the remaining rations in the container for breakfast, he considered what the group had learned yesterday. The ubiquity of the jackal headdress remained confusing to him. There were unclear reports of jackal attacks in the periphery of the kingdom, a place where the animals were not native. Could this be a reference to jackal-like insignia? Bartholomew was not sure. Similarly, there were references to jackals in the scriptures, but they were usually in reference to that lord of chaos, Set, and very different from the military precision demonstrated by these rebels. Not much to go on either way, thought Bartholomew, although he'd try to continue to look for jackal-related information.

What was of much more interest was the mirror which was found in the container, near the symbol of the One True God. Both wer clearly hidden from the rebels. By whom and for what purpose was the question. A perusal through his collection of scriptures found a tantalizing reference:

To find the truth of the One True God one must find the truth in the world. To find the truth in the world, one must find the truth in oneself. For the self is the mirror of creation, and creation is the mirror of the One True God. See yourself clear and true before you look towards others. Turn your gaze within to see without; turn your gaze without to see beyond.

Someone who wanted to help the true rulers of the kingdom, and fight the hypocrisy and treason of the usurpers, would very likely have secreted the mirror and symbol where only the princess and her loyal supporters would have any chance of finding it. The mirror demanded closer inspection.

Bartholomew went to share his thoughts with the rest of the core leadership team.
OOC:
@Avraham As our new Quartermaster he has entrusted you with this role ;) I think Barth should have put the mirror and the symbol on his sheet. I think you can put it in the slot with pitons.
Sep 25, 2024 9:16 am
OOC:
Oh... and I almost forgot:

During the surveying the camp and clearing's nearby area KImbek has found what he was looking for. An item shaken out from one of their captors by the magically awaken chains.

A crowbar looking as new as if it was made yesterday.
OOC:
Nów I see you have already noted it on your sheet. Good! :)
Sep 25, 2024 10:27 am
OOC:
Do we have one player to make decision for the group as we discussed before? I would prefer that person to answer at least "how are you traveling". I have no opinion on that.
As for roles I have opinion on Sadur taking scout role and travel ahead of the party, but I'm not deciding
Sadur just politely nod to Bartholomew's morning thoughts and concentrate on packing his few belongings. He is waiting for others just as impatiently as his dog sniffing the path ahead.
Wilderness could be dangerous, your highness. Should we scout ahead with the silver ?
Sep 25, 2024 3:00 pm
Pedrop says:
@Avraham As our new Quartermaster he has entrusted you with this role ;) I think Barth should have put the mirror and the symbol on his sheet. I think you can put it in the slot with pitons.
OOC:
Done
Capital idea, master Sadur. Your hound's nose is a more valuable asset for scouting than the rest of us combined. I would join you, but O feel my duty is to be withing hailing distance of the princess. Turning to the others, Bartholomew continues Sadur must concentrate in scouting; but I would ask the rest of you to contemplate the matter of the mirror and the scriptures. First, it seems we may have some support among those who remain on the old continent. Second, the mirror and symbol themselves might have more utility than mere symbolism. With that, Bartholomew packs up his own belongings for travel, and turns to help any other who may need as the party prepares for its journey down the path.
Sep 25, 2024 8:42 pm
"I don't suppose anyone managed to get any sense of which way is home?" Shallan sighs, "Our first step is survival, then we need to find our way home."
She appraises the group,
"Sardur, if you're happy to scout alone, with your hound then do so - but please be careful, I don't want to lose any more friends here. Bella you're on quartermaster duty and keep an eye on people, I'm relying on you to notice if someone is flagging and we need to rest. Kimbek, you're learned, if you can take notes on the area, I don't want to find we've been going around in circles and no-one was paying attention enough to notice." she pauses a moment, half expecting someone to protest.

"I don't think we need to worry too much about being followed, so the rest of you just keep a lookout, we may need to arrange a foraging team later, but I think we're well stocked for now?"
OOC:
Just going ahead and designating roles to keep things moving, happy to adjust if people have other preferences.

So
Sardur: Scout
Bella: Quartermaster
Kirbek: Guide
Everyone else: Look Out

How's that sound?

Belladonna gives a salute and a wink to Shallan.

"Of course, my lady. We should have enough emergency food for 5 days. We should look for more fresh water though. Leadership fits you well."

She follows what Kimbek did to cook the last of the rations that will expire and enjoys a hearty meal with the group. She then checks on Pepper and is pleased the good rest and companionship seems to have healed her spirits. She still has a bulging stomach though from the overeating and will have to take it easy.

First she has everyone pack up their share of rations and bundle up the wood so it can be easily transported if Sadur finds a better camping spot. As they do so, she takes the opportunity to check out the hut they have been sleeping by to see if it will give them clues on who they will encounter in the near future.

Thanks Spinningdice for taking some initiative. It's not only thematic in case of your PC, but helps moving things along:)

Avraham: you can continue your investigation of the mirror on your way if the item interest you. Of course others too. I have some ideas of its extraordinary futures - for now mainly for flavor, but who knows when I will use it for the plot purposes? (probably as soon as it will be a good fit;) But any of you will have to find them "manually" experimenting with the thing.

I'm assuming your marching order is this: Scouting at Very Far: Sadur; Main forces: Kimbek, Barth, Shallan, Bella, The Rest - until further notice from you, it will not change
Sadur, encouraged by the consent of the princess and her mature advisor, did not wait long before he ordered his dog to stay close to him and took a cautious but quick steps down the path, in order to get ahead of the group by a suitable distance.

Belladonna, after issuing a series of orders, mainly aimed at taking good, calorific wood with them, decided to spend some more time checking out the small hut. She was a bit more daring than Sadur and went inside. She sat down on a small stool, probably to feel like its owner. She saw in front of her, through the open door, only her companions packing up in their camp. Disappointed a little she stood up, then she felt that there was some powder on the stool. She instinctively put her fingers to her nose and smelled it.

"Ha! Tobacco. And quite high quality. The owner was certainly someone who did not shy away from a pipe." - she thought.

Bella - curious - stood on the stool and looked out through a small square window. It basically gave a view only of the clearing, but it was so cleverly cut out that it easily encompassed it in its entirety.

She looked up. To her surprise, she saw a lever with a handle at the end that fit her hand perfectly. Its other end was attached to a small actuator reaching the roof of this min-hut. Without thinking much, she pulled it. At first she heard a sound like a crack coming from above her head. Instinctively, she covered herself with her arm. But when after a moment - nothing happened, she opened her eyes and saw that pulling the lever had caused a small vent in the roof to open, and the air inside became slightly cooler. Undoubtedly, the builder of this mini-house knew how to construct various contraptions. She left the hut finding nothing more, in order to check the results of her orders and how company is ready for the coming journey...
OOC:
So the journey begins! Continuation in next post in a moment.

[ +- ] Path - mood picture
As the party makes its way down the narrow, overgrown path, the dense jungle seems to close in around them. Towering ferns brush against their cloths, and the thick canopy above allows only thin rays of sunlight to pierce through, casting dappled shadows across the mossy ground. Every step forward is met with the cacophony of unseen creatures—strange birds calling out in shrill, haunting tones, and the distant roar of something far larger, deeper within the jungle.

The air is thick and humid, clinging to their skin, and with each breath, the rich, earthy scent of wet soil and exotic flora fills their lungs. Their boots sink into the soft, loamy ground, while vines draped with ancient carvings coil around trees older than any they’ve seen before. The jungle feels alive, not just with creatures, but with the remnants of an ancient power—stones carved with symbols they can barely comprehend peek through the underbrush, as if watching their every move.

Despite their shared loyalty and royal blood, tension hangs in the air. Each of them feels the weight of the unknown pressing down, knowing they’re far from the mechanical comforts of the royal court. They know this is a place where the wilds reign, where forgotten civilizations have left their marks.

Some may wonder in silence: What lies ahead? What dangers lurk beyond the trees? Others, perhaps the more pragmatic, feel the prickle of fear as they consider what those roars belong to. Dinosaurs? Beasts of flesh? Or iron? Like the flying pterodactyl that brought them to this forsaken place?

The clearing where they began their journey now feels like a distant memory. Here, on this path surrounded by ancient stone and living jungle, they are truly at the edge of the world.
On their way at one moment:
Kimbek crouched by a cluster of unfamiliar plants, his sharp eyes scanning the thick, waxy leaves and small, dark berries nestled within. He reached for his cookbook—though some might mistake it for a spellbook, the pages a jumble of recipes, arcane symbols, and notes on flora. With a pointy stick sharpened to precision and a scrap of moistened bark, he scribbled quick observations. Rubbing a berry between his fingers, he sniffed it cautiously, then smeared a small amount on the back of his hand, waiting for any sign of irritation. "Might be edible… if boiled," he murmured to himself, jotting down his thoughts as he cross-referenced an earlier note. Kimbek had long known that survival wasn’t just about swordplay—knowledge of the natural world, of what could nourish or kill, was its own form of magic.
OOC:
I'm noting that the group will have advantage on Forager rolls in this jungle due to your GS.

In general: most of your journey the path was rising: very slightly, but constantly. So you can figure out that now you are on higher level then when you began your trek through the jungle. It took you about 8 hours, and as this part ends, it will be about 2am -> beginning of Afternoon watch. As Sadur is ahead of the rest he will see the following few moments before others:

Pedrop sent a note to GreyWord
OOC:
Sadur can tall me if he is doing something before the party will join him - he has like 30-60s before the others will catch up - or if he is simply waiting for them, being also tired and using this time to rest a little.

All PCs: please tell me if you were doing something else besides just walking during your journey. It shouldn't be something "significant" as walking in jungle is not an easy task, especially as most of you have spend most of their former lives in the comfort of the royal court... but if Kimbek was able to look at the flora you have passed or seen on one of your very few rests, the rest of you could probably do something too.

The "flavor/mood only" post are also more than welcome:) What did your PC feel or thing about their current situation?

Or you can write me that your PC was to tired/afraid/... to focus on something else and you just want to skip to what you have encountered:)

After looking over the hut, it confirmed Belladonna's thoughts that this was a hut someone stayed in to watch the clearing they had landed in. Most likely hunting, but good to know the person who visited the hut had to be patient and enjoyed a good smoke. Belladonna sighed a little, she could go for a good tobacco again. She then perked up, if they find whoever owned this hut, maybe one day they could trade for it! She made sure to share what she saw and her thoughts the next time the group rested.

Satisfied with her observations, she joined the group to follow Sadur down the path. She took up the rear to see if anyone was flagging to call out for rests or allow them to ride Pepper for a bit. Belladonna refrained from riding on Pepper as she no longer had a saddle and wanted to keep her fresh for others who may need the help. When the foliage thinned and they could be less guarded, she would play the flute to give some distraction on their long trek. During one of their rests, Belladonna tries her hand at foraging.

Bartholomew was intrigued by the mirror, but couldn’t give it his full focus at this moment. Until he was more assured of not only the party’s chances for survival, but had a better idea of where they were in relation to the capital and what steps would be needed to get them back, he wanted to focus on the group.

Now that the party is out of immediate danger and moving, Bartholomew will try to identify where they are, as specifically as he is able to (which could be as general as a continent if he is that lucky) where they are and what terrain/geography/known locations are between them and the capital. OOC:
As Sadur is just waiting I'm reposting what you all see at the end of this part of your journey.

So now you can describe what your PC was doing during recent hike AND you should describe what are you doing now: when you encountered the rope bridge.

After nearly eight hours of relentless trekking through the jungle, exhaustion begins to settle into the bones of the adventurers. The dense vegetation continues to press in on all sides, and the air is thick with the mingling scents of wet earth, decaying foliage, and unfamiliar blossoms. The once vibrant sense of adventure is now dulled by the ache in their legs and the weight of uncertainty. Every step forward feels like a battle through the tangled undergrowth, the foreign sounds of dinosaurs echoing in the distance like constant, low drumbeats reminding them they are far from safety.

But then, without warning, the jungle thins, and the group emerges at the edge of a deep ravine. A narrow rope bridge hangs precariously before them, swaying slightly in the gentle breeze. Surprisingly it looks as relatively new, no older then few years..

The ravine itself yawns before them, very deep and shrouded in mist, its jagged walls vanishing into the shadowy abyss below. The rope bridge is worn, the ropes fraying in places, and the wooden planks beneath are cracked and rotted, some missing entirely. Beyond the bridge, the other side of the ravine reveals more of the same: jungle... but the trees loos a little less dense... or is it only more a wish, rather than fact?

As they stand at the edge, they realize that - in practice - they could go down the ravine on this side and go up back on the other. But it will take them at least few more hours - in comparison to just crossing the rope bridge.

The trek has pushed them to their limits, but this bridge, swinging lightly in the wind, presents them with a difficult choice: risk a quick but dangerous crossing, or descend down the ravine without relying on the unknown strength of the bridge.

Belladonna - eager and enthusiastic as always - didn't wait for Kimbek's results of the analysis of the vegetation around them. When she came across one large, beautiful fruit - without thinking much she picked it and took a bite. However, its taste didn't really match its appearance, and it was safe to say that it was quite strange.

The clearing you all landed was in center of some kind of terrain depression. But... you might have noticed something if your PC is thinking about your current location:) Nothing specific, but some more information where you might be. But remember - TF could be a result too... :) So if you want to roll for this it would be: Animal or Wilderness Lore - both based on Int.

Kimbek notes Belladonna's foraging attempt, and looks carefully at the discarded fruit, even smelling it a little. "We have to be careful here. We're in a much different place from home. Even things we think we recognize might be completely different than what they are back home." He tries not to say this in a chiding tone. "What did it taste like?"

But then, without warning, the jungle thins, and the group emerges at the edge of a deep ravine. A narrow rope bridge hangs precariously before them, swaying slightly in the gentle breeze. Surprisingly it looks as relatively new, no older then few years

presents them with a difficult choice: risk a quick but dangerous crossing, or descend down the ravine without relying on the unknown strength of the bridge.

As the rest of the group catches up to Sadur at the ravine, Kimbek takes a moment to get some water and eat a few dry rations. He also keeps an eye on Belladonna to see if she is having any adverse effects from the fruit she tried earlier. He spies the bridge and wonders at it aloud. "Do you think it's safe?" he calls out to Sadur.
Sep 27, 2024 7:17 pm
As Belladonna saw Kimbek take time to check some of the local flora, she soon espied a fruit that looked very much like what they had at home. Feeling a little homesick, she couldn't resist grabbing one to try and take a bite. She probably should have stopped when she noticed her fingers tingling as she grabbed the fruit.

"Eeugh, it tasted just like an apple at first, but as I swallowed it felt like the fruit had been filled with fire ants!"

From now on, Belladonna will keep an eye out for that fruit and make sure Pepper doesn't eat any.

As Belladonna rests like Sadur recommends, she feels a bit nervous that Kimbek has been keeping a close eye on her. For her care or morbid curiosity she is not sure. She squeakily pipes up, "You could tie a strong rope or vine to me and I could try crossing the bridge if you wish."

Kimbek shrugs. "I really don't see a need for anyone to attempt the bridge until we know more about it. But the fact that there is a bridge means that there is something or somewhere it connects to. It may not be a currently active or used location, or it could be a dangerous location. So you are correct when you say we don't really have a need to go across the bridge. If there is some other path, we can of course take that instead."

[NS result]
Bartholomew, walking along the path with his companions, could not drive away noble, yet intrusive thoughts of a quick return to the kingdom. But everything had to be considered with prudence, in the right order. First thing: where were they? First he tried to guess it from the vegetation. Without luck. The plants were completely different than he had had the opportunity to see in the kingdom - but this statement gave him nothing. So far - maybe it was a good thing - they had not encountered any animals nearby, maybe apart from a few colorful birds, which they heard more than saw - soaring into the air from the tops of the trees they passed. And then, when they were lucky enough to find themselves under a thinning in the crown of the trees: he noticed them. A small flock of sea gulls. They had to be near the sea. But how near? But it was certainly not the peninsula on which the Kingdom was located. Could it be one of the bigger islands in the Far Sea? One of those he heard so many stories about... usually not good ones?

[succesful Luck save and Kimbek reaction with GS]
Belladonna's belly, with a resistance perhaps unique (among the so-called civilized races) only to halflings, had apparently resisted the fruit that Kimbek had identified as the Death Apple. Or maybe Bella owed it to his quick reaction and taking his advice to return the cursed food back to the world. In a way that was not entirely appropriate for a lady - and me the narrator, to describe - but certainly effective. All of this meant that it ended happily with only a loud belch... answered by the undiscriminating expressions of some of her companions.

Some of the people from the Rest were quite enthusiastic about Sadur's idea to secure their bridge's crossing with additional rope, but soon they realized that none of them have any rope. It is true that lianas hanging from trees around can be used to quickly construct a replacement rope, but it was clear that the strength of such a rope would depend largely on the skill of its maker. Making such rope would take about 1h for 1 person. And only one other could help.

Discussing the situation and looking at the slope of the ravine over which the bridge was suspended, they decided that going down and going back up shouldn't be too dangerous. Provided they took the right amount of time. They estimated that both of these activities should take them about an hour. Assuming that there was no river crossing or anything like that waiting for them at the bottom of the ravine. The slope was quite steep, but full of trees and bushes to grab onto. Only haste could pose a significant hazard. Although time - with the evening approaching - was not without its significance either.
OOC:
So: what do you do?

Sadur plan was interesting, but indeed you would have to craft a makeshift lien rope - that will break after few uses depending on result of crafting roll. Besides it also requires someone to go down and up - so you don’t save any time for this. But… it would be probably thematic to do for a princess :) Also splitting the group - as I hope Sadur would be not let to do it alone? :) Also someone would have to lead the rope between trees from above for him. It all can be good or bad - depending on what will happen next….:)

Other than that, it seems to your PCs that the best option would be to EITHER try to cross the bridge OR go down the ravine and then up. The question would me more: how? Are you taking any precautions? If you have any additional questions about the surroundings - please ask specific questions.

You can of course also go north or south ( since you've mostly been moving west so far, or any other way) through the jungle, but with the evening approaching and the entrance to the tropical forest - it will justify starting to roll for encounters... as per rules:) And only two of you have weapons right now.

A nimbus of soft blue light surrounds Kimbek, his eyes still closed, and a light glows in the center of his forehead, but he keeps his eyes closed through the duration. For an instant, it appears as though a flying eyeball ((about the size of a tennis ball)) emerges from Kimbek's forehead though it almost immediately disappears in a hazy wave of light.

For the next few minutes, Kimbek sits very still, his eyes closed - he is so still others might think he was asleep if it wasn't for the soft nimbus of blue light surrounding his body.
OOC:
With the invisible flying eye, Kimbek examines the bridge, the ropes and boards and tries to determine whether or not the bridge would hold the weight of one of them if they were to attempt to cross it. The "eye" spirals around the bridge, looking underneath the boards as well as above them. He is not a skilled engineer or architect however, but perhaps someone else with them is. So he attempts to make a mental note of everything that his *eye* can see (and hear). When the eye reaches the other end of the bridge (if it does so in the time the spell lasts), he looks around with it briefly to determine if he can see or hear anything in the jungle beyond the bridge.
OOC:
Edit: Critical fail and failure. Well guys, looks perfectly safe to me! Everyone can go across the bridge now.

As rope bridge is almost 130ft(40m) long - Kimbek is able to manifest his Seeing Eye only until it reaches about half of its length. The ropes looks in relatively good conditions and wooden boards don't seem to have significant cracks or sign of wear. But was it his Magical Eye or spirits flowing through him being particularly positive or enthusiastic at that very moment or the bridge was indeed in quite good condition - he wasn't sure. Being at the center of the bridge by the means of magical energies he controlled, he also seamed to hear some water flow down beneath his current representation of his sense of hearing.

After describing what he experienced to his companions, the group felt that it's time to take some decisions about their next moves.

So it is the rope bridge that is chosen... :)

Anyone that enters the bridge have to make a flat, "oracle-like Luck roll": you roll against your current Luck + 1 (from Belladonna being halfling bonus) without other mods from attributes -> to see how lucky you were in your bridge crossing. It will NOT subtract your Luck in case of a success. In case of a failure I will narrate and tell you what to roll next to see the level of possible consequences. I will do that now for Barth, and continue soon by editing this post.

After/if Barth will check this bridge for you, you all will be rolling this with advantage (2d20 - take lowest). If you would figure out another "safety measures", there won't be the need for rolling any more. Or in the future, crossing this bridge in the future (without hurry) will be relatively safe (no rolls).

DONE: looks like one of the the boards broke... let's see how well Barth have handled it.
Taking a careful steps and poking the bridge's boards with his staff Brother Bartholomew started to move slowly through the rope bridge. At first everything went smooth and without any problems. But when he moved for about 45ft from their edge one of the bridge's boards broke under his weight! Causing observers loosing him from their sight for a for a long, uncertain second. But Old Monk was still too agile to be defeated by simple bridge.

When one of his legs falls through the hole in the bridge, he simply gracefully transferrs his weight to the other, then stands up as if he had planned to do a one-legged squat all along. Then - as if nothing had happened - he begins to continue his careful advance.

As Brother Bartholomew cautiously steps continue through the swaying rope bridge, the mist around him thickens, turning the world into a silvery blur, causing him almost being lost from the sight of his friends.

Somewhere above, the faint creak of a branch echoes through the fog, but the source remains hidden. Suddenly, a shadow shifts in the pale mist — a massive shape unfurls silently from a nearby tree, as if it had been there all along, watching.

With a powerful, ominous beat of wings, giant bird emerges from the fog. Its enormous wingspan cuts through the haze, almost brushing the ropes of the bridge. The sheer weight of the bird seems to pull the air with it, and for a moment, time feels suspended. As the creature descends toward the center of the bridge, its dark, piercing eyes fix on the Bartholomew. There’s a primal, ancient weight in that gaze, like staring into the heart of the mountains themselves. The fog swirls around the great bird as it lands with a shuddering thump, its talons gripping the worn planks.

In the eerie silence that follows, only the creak of the bridge and the slow beat of its wings linger, as the bird stands as if it’s the gatekeeper of the realm on the other side of the bridge.

Also, Barth has General Lore but neither Animal nor Wilderness Lore, so it's a tossup as to whether he recognizes it is a Condor. You're showing an Andean condor—appropriate given the campaign—which has high areas as its habitat but not necessarily mountains. For that matter, they aren't found in the jungle in real life 😋. That being said, I'm happy to roll a d6, and you decide if Barth recognizes its a condor given the roll, and I'll wing it from there.

Belladona looking through her belonging for something edible finds that in her rations - that are so orderly and neatly packed for each day (what immediately recalled her how organized the Jackal Captors were) - there are indeed few stripes of dried, salted meat (probably pork) included in each package. Also she has 3 ginkgo nuts. She realizes that if she would use the meat from rations for the Bird, it will cause her to have it less of it for the future. Besides she wasn't sure if the bird likes such things, but the meat looked tasty.
OOC:
Friendly remainder: I would like this campaign to be in "OSR style", what means - in this case - that often I will put a problem before you and I will NOT have preplanned solution for it. I will accept believable and creative solutions. They don't have to be 100% realistic (80% would do:) ). I'm here for good story:) If you think there should be something useful in environment - just ask. I will answer with my judgment. Or roll Oracle Roll to check if it's there. Or I will ask you to roll your normal Luck roll(on success your current luck is diminishing). But it shouldn't be something out of place. I am presuming that the 10 feet between Barth and the bird also encompasses the bridge terminus.
Bartholomew gazed at the majestic raptor. This was no ordinary bird. It's size alone removed it from the category of ordinary, but the intelligence in its piercing gaze put all doubt to rest. Being near the end of the bridge, Bartholomew slowly—very slowly—knelt down and placed his staff along the bridge lengthwise, so that its other end was already on the ground. He wanted to disarm himself foe now, but not lose access to the staff should it be needed in a hurry. With his foot he edged the staff forward, following until he himself too was on solid ground again.

I know not if you understand speech, noble avian, but perhaps you will understand from my tone of voice if nothing else. We are guests in your domain. here Bartholomew stretched his hands to point back to the remainder of the group, always ensuring his movements were slow and deliberate so as not to frighten or anger the condor. We have been cruelly abducted from our homes and our king, and seek only to return and to restore the rightful monarch or his true heirs.

Bartholomew now opens both hands wide, spreads them to his side, and bows from the waist, keeping eye contact with the condor. May we have leave to traverse your realm, noble one? Moreover, is there any way we may benefit from your knowledge and wisdom?

Bartholomew holds both the bow and the eye contact.

Shallan watches with interest, barely breathing as she waits to see what the Condor's reaction is...
Oct 7, 2024 6:26 pm
Kimbek attempts to watch the bird's response to this attempt of communication. If it was capable of understanding such speech, then he might be able to appeal to the spirit world for communication with it. Alas, he already felt his tie to his spirit weak and insubstantial. Perhaps after he had rested he might be able to pursue such an action.
Oct 7, 2024 8:45 pm
The great bird remains motionless as Bartholomew speaks, its unblinking eyes locked on him, watching his every movement. The silence is thick with tension, as though the very air hums with unspoken expectation. When Bartholomew bows, the creature finally moves—but not away. Its massive head tilts slightly to one side, and with a slow, deliberate gesture, it lifts one talon from the bridge and claws at the rope, then lowers its head toward the ground as if searching for something.

The meaning becomes clear—a subtle but unmistakable gesture. It expects something. Its sharp beak clicks together once, the sound cutting through the misty air. The creature does not shift aggressively but remains looming, making it clear that passage is not freely granted.

The condor's wings, half-raised now, ripple slightly in the air, as if signaling that the balance of this encounter has shifted. Its eyes—intelligent, calculating—seem to wait, focusing intently on Bartholomew as though gauging his understanding. The offer of words and deference alone will not suffice. To earn passage, the group must present an offering, one worthy of the creature that guards this ancient, untamed area.
Oct 7, 2024 8:57 pm
Bartholomew considers the bird’s actions. I see. So you are guardian of the pass and expect your rightful due. We understand. Do I have leave to return to my party to consider what offering would be acceptable to one as majestic as yourself?

Bartholomew spoke loudly, exaggerating both intonation and gesture, so as best to make his meaning clear to the condor AND to the party. Without taking his eyes off the bird, Bartholomew turns his head slightly to the left and calls out: Belladona, discuss with Sadur and see what we have which may appease the guardian of the ravine. I will return if I can.

As Bartholomew takes a tentative step back - not loosing the eye contact with the Gatekeeper - the condor makes a loud hiss, clearly not satisfied with turns of events. For a moment Bartholomew feels the tension in its muscles and body posture as it would be preparing for a sudden jump, but then it checks monk's hands again and Brother Bartholomew have an impression that the big bird makes almost unnoticeable nods with it's head, as it would think: "Empty. Bartholomew, backing away from the bird, knelt down to start reaching for his staff, but after an apparent rebuke by the mighty condor, realized that it would be more prudent to leave it in the bridge, for now. His fists were just as capable if necessary, although with shorter reach. He returned to the group to discuss options, just in time to hear Sadur.

Why a flying device? We don’t have enough rotting meat? Did we leave any corpses behind? Carrion raptors usually appreciate rotting meat. Also, Birds are often attracted to shiny objects, but I am extremely loathe to give up the mirror we found. Perhaps the symbol would appease it? Lastly, we must consider the possibility of combat.

Reminder: due to Sadurs Great Success on Animal Lore roll, and his choice: the flying toy have a very high probability of working in this case. Who knows, probably Sadur knows something about large birds psychology, that some of you don't? :)

But of course it doesn't prevent other players from trying something else.

"Flying... I'm not sure flying across would let us avoid the bird... oh wait, no you mean as a gift... or distraction." Shallan shrugs "I don't think it should be that hard? I'm not sure I'd trust the vines here with our weight, but it should be enough for a kite-like thing... do we really think the bird would like that." Shallan paces around checking the texture of the leaf and pulling on some vines.

Belladonna looks between the others as they discuss what to offer the bird. She puts away the jerky for now.

"I'm afraid we don't have much for a food offering, but adding something shiny to what the others are making sounds like an excellent idea."

She takes out a shiny hair ornament and looks at the others she has asked to stay back (NPCs).

"If any of you has something shiny like this, maybe we could use it to help decorate the offering?"

I was hoping for Sadur ( @GreyWord ) would answer Barth and Shallan - why the bird will like the toy, as I'm interested in it too:) But maybe he don't want to do that so: to move action further I will assume that the answer "was" or will be satisfactory for others, and the group proceeded to prepare the offering. (not that I was able to post earlier, as I had very busy Friday)
Pedrop sent a note to GreyWord
As we have NS from Belladonna:
Seeing that the big bird is seriously hindering their progress, its hefty size and that they still don't have many weapons on them - The Rest listens carefully to Belladonna's words - probably still remembering how wise her advices was when they made their very firs camp in the area. Some of them steps from leg to leg in expression of uneasiness, but finally most of them offer something shiny for the offering. A bottom button from the fancy vest, a second earring where the first was lost during capture or even a ring from a hand that clearly had too many of them.

Belladonna as one that is always close to the people and have a good feeling of them, knows that their lingering is not because they do not want to help the common cause. In this new, hostile and unpleasant land, getting rid of even the most insignificant - it would seem - thing that connects them to the "old world"... is felt as getting rid of memory, connection with what WAS. Without any certainty that IT will ever return. If they will ever return to their homes and earlier life.

Shallan manages to gather some vines, although not too long, mostly 1 meter or shorter. Seeing that now they have a big leaf, a bunch of vines with varied lengths and some shiny pieces gathered from the generous group the adventures felt they are ready to make the toy-offering for the bird visibly getting more and more impatient with every minute.
OOC:
in contrast of finding longer vines that could be good enough to function as a rope - that would take much more time, as stated in OOC thread.

Ok, due to nice idea of Belladonna and her success on the roll, someone can make an Traps & Locks( Dex) roll with advantage :) I assumed that our princess was preparing to do just that? @spinningdice ? Whoever will do that - please tell us what you are trying to achieve with this crafting? How does it look? (Maybe even function? )

Independently of the success or not on the "crafting" roll: the next person (Barth?) can take the result and go back with it the bird. Barth don't have to do it anymore, but anyone else who will enter the bridge: please make a flat Luck roll with advantage (2 dice, take lowest)

Sorry, I was sure my PC explain that he rather want to "distract" bird. I am not an expert on Condor psychology, not to mention "mighty condor", but the best association me as a player and my PC has for a scavenger animal is the dog! And just like dog would catch a stick, I thought mighty condor would catch a flying toy...
Bus since more players seem to like beladonnas idea better than mine, let's go with shiny idea instead

Yes I mean a distraction. It would try to catch. Maybe. No I'm not sure. Just an idea ... he stops, shrug, looks around with a lost sight.
Oct 14, 2024 7:53 pm
Shallan quickly sketches out some plans in the dirt, mumbling to herself, "it's not complex, but needs to be... distracting. Essentially a large paper glider, with whatever shiny rocks and a tail of vines. The janglier and shinier we can make it the better. We're warm here and the air coming up from the ravine should help it take flight, with a short run up. Hmm - could look to scaling this up a little later for a person - but that would need testing, maybe later."

Planning done, she rallies the group to fetch the required materials and starts work.

More than happy to bring it to the bird once I understand IC what it is supposed to do.
Interesting. Many birds are attracted to shiny things. It could work. The question is do we launch it in front of the bird or do we hand it to the bird. Bartholomew looked at Sadur—their resident wildlife expert.
OOC:
DM, if knowing the answer to that is part of Sadur's GS, please let us know. Otherwise, we will once again play it by ear :D
Oct 14, 2024 9:19 pm
Sadur - drawing a parallel (for the lack of better means) between training dogs and what he could expect from the bird if he would behave similarly to canine- thinks that, depending on what you will do: it should trigger a certain response. Usually handing a ball-prize to the dog triggers particular trained behavior. In contrast to throwing it, which makes the dog chasing it - mainly distracting it by this.

Bartholomew grasps the plan. A glider of sorts with shiny items depending from it via lianas should be shown to the condor and then launched from the bridge away from the direction of intended travel. Very well; what else needs be done before our distraction is complete?

Shallan / @spinningdice was successful with her roll, that means the toy is ready! I would like here to describe what she made, but if she wouldn't want to: we can assume it is some kind of kite/origami made of leaf in shape of a bird, decorated with vines and shiny objects. If/when Barth is bringing it back to the condor, please describe how he does that.

No hand it. Let it fly away! Sadur say convincingly. But then more worried adds It depends what it's previous experience with humanoids whoever have tamed him, don't you think? If they just feed the bird like a pig it will not work and we will have to either kill it or hunt a game for it. Actually, give him food once and it will follow us to demand more of it, wouldn't it?
Oct 15, 2024 1:37 pm
OOC:
The shiny items were just to help with the plan Sadur has, distracting, gifting, or something else.
"Sounds good Mr. Sadur! Are we attaching the food to the gift and Brother Bartholomew will let it accidentally fly away from the bridge as it reaches for it?"

Belladonna smiles, but clearly has no idea what they are planning to do with the contraption that has been made.
Oct 15, 2024 3:08 pm
Belladona, I think Sadur was suggesting we do not add food, as it will come to expect it. My plan is to slowly cross the bridge, present it to the bird out of claw reach, and in doing so launch it off the side in the direction away from the far side of the bridge, so that the bird follows it. The moment its eyes leave the bridge landing, the party should quickly—but carefully—cross the bridge. I have marked areas to be avoided by small pinches of herbs.
Oct 15, 2024 4:24 pm
Sadur get lost of all the questions and attention he is getting on his persona.
Look, I'm just a Kennelman, not a bird expert. And I see such creature first time. I have no idea why would anyone tame such a creature. I see no evidence of it being used to transport anything.

He think we are wasting time on discussions and attempts to further improve the flying toy and afraid animal could get restless so try to explain his plan as short as posible:
I fly it off the cliff toward the bird. ha goes to the edge and shows the direction
[ +- ] Let me illustrate
Bird try catch - Bartholomew can run rest of the bride. It does not - well I tried. He explains his very simple, unpretentious idea. Is it too dumb an idea you think?
Oct 15, 2024 4:56 pm
Kimbek ponders the situation carefully. "It is a seemingly intelligent animal; if my spirit were a little stronger I could even attempt to communicate with it. But I unfortunately have no further suggestions. I could attempt to cook something for it, but we have no meat (or at least not much meat) so I am not sure that would do anything."
Oct 15, 2024 9:03 pm
"Ah, wonderful! Whether we launch it from the cliff's edge or near the bird, it should hopefully distract it away from those crossing the bridge. Do you think the contraption is ready my lady?"

Belladonna turns to Shallan and what she has built.
Oct 15, 2024 9:27 pm
Sadur, let me launch it. The bird has already seen me, questioned me, and expects me to respond. I will probably be able to get closer than you. Moreover, should things go awry, I likely have a better chance to dodge and evade the massive beast.
Oct 15, 2024 10:21 pm
OOC:
An interesting discussion we got here:) But just to let you know: as I read it -> it seams that no one has decided to bring the contraption to the bird, yet. I will narrate the bird reaction when someone will describe starting the toy over the edge or approaching the bird, or doing something else with it. I'm hoping Sadur will answer Barth @GreyWord ? + I wonder if @spinningdice want's to add anything about Shallan's creation?

You all have put a lot of effort/posts in the situation, so I'm thinking now about giving you back something interesting in return (half pre-planned) :) But let's see how it will resolve in the end first.

The way I envision the device is like a half-scale hang glider, or a very large balsa wood plane, with shiny objects hanging off of it, which Barth can launch into the wind off of the far end of the bridge. See image below with red arrow as launch trajectory.

Perfect Sadur raised his hands, showing he does not mean to insist on executing the plan. Turnning his attention his dog instead.
Oct 16, 2024 4:18 am
Kimbek nods. "Just be careful. If the bird is more intelligent than we think, it might not care to be tricked."
Oct 16, 2024 4:26 am
Indeed. Which is why I will be carrying my staff, Bartholomew answers with a smile.
OOC:
Is the device ready, should we proceed? After tomorrow afternoon I'm out until Saturday night so I think it makes sense to get my part done beforehand and not hold the rest of you up, although Pedrop can run Barth if necessary :)

Bartholomew accepted the intricate contraption from Sadur and Shallan. If I do not return, your highness, it has been a privilege serving your family. Be sharp, be vigilant, rely on those you trust and none other. As for now, follow closely what happens and take advantage when the bird loses focus.

Turning to Belladona, watch over her closely, and give Pepper a kiss on the snout from me., he says with a smile.

Bartholomew approaches the bridge, cautiously but confidently. My job is to wrest the condor's attention from the princess and her party, by any means necessary, keeps running through his mind. As he nears the far side, he stops before—but in reach of—his staff.

Using exaggerated motions to underscore his words, Bartholomew addresses the guardian of the far side: Noble bird, mere morsels of rotting carrion, while tasty, would be a poor offering to one such as magnificent as yourself. BEHOLD! We bring you the gift of entertainment, of attention, of exercise, and most of all, of the hunt! While aware that condors are carrion-eaters, Bartholomew is banking on somehow stroking the bird's ego. Here is one truly worthy of your attention. Catch it, and it is yours! With that, Bartholomew launches the sparkling glider into the wind, away from the far side, hopefully drawing the guardian's attention away from both the party and their intended destination.

As Bartholomew approached the great condor, the creature carefully observed his every step. It became clear that the closer Bartholomew got to the bird, the more the guardian's attention began to focus on the glowing trinket, the extraordinary offering prepared by the group of adventurers.

The tension in the condor’s posture became increasingly apparent as it watched. At first, it tilted its head from side to side, as if trying to get a better look at what was being offered, but soon its body clearly shifted into a stance of readiness, poised to leap at any moment.

The closer Bartholomew got to the bird, the more he felt his confidence slipping away. "Maybe carrion would have been a better choice?" he thought. But he knew he had to follow through with his decision. For himself. For the princess. For the kingdom.

As Bartholomew released the brightly glowing little bird, crafted from leaves and various decorations, he exhaled heavily, convinced the condor would fly off after the trinket. But things didn’t go as expected. The condor let out an enraged screech, like a child of monstrous size who had just had candy snatched away at the last moment. With fierce passion, it lunged at Bartholomew, who—at the last second—used a deft kick to flip his staff into his hands and block the creature's attacking talons, larger than a grown man’s fist. He knelt under the weight of the beast's assault, hearing, almost feeling in his bones, the tension of the ropes holding the bridge beneath him.

Bartholomew lifted his head, his eyes meeting the bird's gaze. With the last effort to fend off the attacker, he made a a loud cry, not shy of looking death straight into the eyes!

Pedrop sent a note to Avraham
Just as unexpectedly, the condor pulled its head back—not delivering the final blow the monk had anticipated. Instead, the great bird took flight, so swiftly and suddenly that Bartholomew’s tense hands, gripping the staff, didn’t release in time. Before he realized it, his feet had left the bridge, and he felt the growing rush of air around him. Instinctively, he turned to see where they were going, doing so just in time to watch the condor snatch the toy bird in its beak. With a sharp turn to the right, the condor soared upward with powerful wingbeats, flying above the tree tops faintly outlined in the mist, heading toward the direction set by far end of the rope bridge.

His companions, who had been watching the entire scene with bated breath, were once again enveloped by a sense of helplessness, the mist, and the strange silence that shrouded their surroundings. It was only occasionally interrupted by the cry of some unknown creature, completely unfamiliar to them.

The path across the bridge was finally clear. Although it still swayed slightly, emitting sounds reminiscent of an exhausted old man who had just chased some youngsters off his yard. Only one question remained: Was the price they had to pay for the freedom to cross the bridge too high?

What do you do?
Oct 17, 2024 6:18 pm
Even if anyone hear Sadur talking to his dog: I'm so sorry about Bart. Mo more smart ideas from me ever! you certainly don't hear the rest of what he whisper to his dog.

In a moment Dwarf rise and announce aloud that he is going the long way down and up, avoiding the bridge because his dog will not be willing to travel the bridge. Sadur suggest he could take Pepper with him as dinosaur is probably too heavy to cross the bridge, but it is in either case not for Sadur to decide. "NO!" Shallan shouts, stepping forward a few steps onto the Bridge, before realising she's too slow to do anything, she briefly considers shooting the damned bird but at this point the fall would be definitely fatal... the bird, he might survive?

Straightening up a little, she addressed the group "This is unfortunate, but I won't believe he's dead until I see a body. We'll leave markings as we travel, if he can find his way back to the bridge he can catch us up. Now the bridge could obviously hold his wait, so we'll cross one at a time. If anyone would prefer the trek with Sardur then feel free to join him."

Of course ss a GM, I don't expect anyone to do this, but I'm really curious about the reactions of the other PCs, especially since the situation arose spontaneously, I didn't expect this to happen:) What is great.

"You may be right Mr. Sadur that it would be safer for Pepper to go with you, but I worry about you going on your own without a way to contact us if there is trouble or you are hurt. You wouldn't happen to have a mirror or a whistle to signal us?"

She looks at the bridge and the direction Bartholomew has disappeared with the bird.

"That is a sound plan, my lady, to make sure Brother Bartholomew can follow us if we do not find him first. We need to get to where they are going on the other side of this bridge. Let us hurry and use this bridge so we do not waste his efforts."

She organizes the group so they hold their inventory in a balanced manner and lines them up so they can go one at a time as recommended by the princess.

At a good table, the DM needs to have as much fun as the players. Also, this is what makes TTRPG different than "choose your own adventures". Combine the stochasticity of the dice with the chaos that comes from having different people contribute ideas that others literally could not have created and you have the recipe for a dynamically evolving story—the best kind of story :). After warm farewells and promises of quickly reuniting, the group experienced yet another split. The main force of the King's Remnants, led by Shallan and Belladonna, began crossing the rope bridge, which had finally calmed its earlier agitated swaying. Meanwhile, Sadur and Kimbek—friends since their shared struggles on the warrior's arena—decided once again to trust more in the strength of their muscles and the agility of their minds, as well as each other, rather than the worn ropes and planks of the bridge that had so far proven unlucky. They chose the path down the ravine, leading their animal companions with them.

Belladonna, undoubtedly one of the lightest in the group, decided to let the others go ahead.
‘When it comes to saving someone hanging by a breaking plank with their last bit of strength... you'll want someone who makes things worse as little as possible,’ she quipped with a disarming smile.

Some of the Rest tried to dissuade Princess Shallan from her course, but she refused to consider any other option than taking on the responsibility of leadership. Especially when the sacrifice of Brother Bartholomew still weighed heavily on her heart, burning with each step. With firm determination, she stepped onto the bridge as first after brave monk, resolute in leading her small company toward a new world, ensuring their safety first. Safety that could later be built upon. Built upon to restore the Proper Order of Things.

Though she tried to maintain a proud and upright posture, she didn’t forget the markings Bartholomew had prepared for them. She pointed out and warned those following her every time her keen eyes spotted one. Finally—when everyone had crossed to the other side—Belladonna practically ran onto the bridge, and without slowing her pace, crossed it with the confidence of someone strolling through royal gardens rather than a treacherous bridge lined with cracked planks.

On the other side of the bridge, a worn (or perhaps artificially maintained) path through the jungle clearly began to lead upwards, apparently heading toward the summit of a small hill ahead of them. To their surprise, stone steps soon appeared along the path, undeniably placed there by intelligent beings. At first, they were roughly flat stones, but they quickly transformed into precisely crafted—though still stone—stairs. The steps steadily led them to the top of the hill they were arduously climbing. After what felt like countless steps, the surrounding vegetation grew denser and darker, and the stairs themselves began to sink into the hillside. Out of the mist, a stone portal emerged before them—doors... or more so like the ruins of the front of a temple.

"Yes, my lady, this looks like a good place to rest. Potential shelter from the elements and a natural place for Mr. Sadur and Mr. Kimbek to stop."

Belladonna tries to bolster Shallan's confidence as she sees her frown deepen the farther they move away from the bridge.

As Belladonna approaches the large stone portal—ascending what seem to be increasingly higher steps—she is suddenly surprised as sunlight breaks through the dense canopy, illuminating the bas-relief carved directly above the entryway:
https://i.pinimg.com/1200x/bc/13/26/bc132657055aca9afe74f9f12dab935e.jpg

The square face of the figure, under the influence of the sunlight, appears to smile... only to return to a completely impassive, rectangular expression after a brief moment. Belladonna wonders whether its outstretched arms signify an invitation or a readiness to wield the staffs, which could just as easily be interpreted as spears.

When the square face above the doorway is again cloaked in shadow—perhaps because a branch in the tree canopy was momentarily pushed aside by a sudden gust of wind and then returned—Belladonna’s eyes adjust once more to the twilight, allowing her to notice a small monkey sitting on a nearby branch, watching her with curiosity.

Momentarily diverting her gaze from the monkey back to the stone passageway within the stone portal, Belladonna notices that the passage is relatively short, and on the other side, she sees more small steps leading to a stone plaza where brown shapes resembling tents are visible.

Belladonna notes the tents and that they may need to greet the current inhabitants before camping around the stone edifice. As she reflects on the momentarily revealed bas-relief, her gaze wanders back to the monkey. Was it holding something? She tries to coax it down with some of the jerky she found for the bird that took Brother Bartholomew away. If only Mr. Sadur was here...

Thanks for taking the successful perception roll! But aw man, rolling not so hot for Belladonna on this part of the trek...

@spinningdice are you with us? :)
The monkey at first was still interested in what Belladonna was offering to it. It even walked over the branch closer to check it... but after brief sniffing of the meat its hair over whole body stood up as in electrical shock, it screamed at the top of his lungs - visibly scared to the the bone - and ran to the nearest bushes...

"Could it have thought it was monkey meat?" - someone from the Rest commented, to only be distracted by the new commotion arising in the side of the jungle the monkey ran... Apparently waking some of the strange birds that were hiding there:
https://i.pinimg.com/564x/22/bd/9e/22bd9eb8f07cb70e900e56c562ffd27b.jpg

They flew into the air... with angry squeaks and started to look for the source of all the commotion. Than - evidently looking at your group - they started to fly towards you with a squawk reminiscent of a hunting falcon...
OOC:
We are going back to counting rounds! The birds are surprised so you have one free round to act.

The birds are Far from you so they will have to use whole turn to get to you - assuming you will stay at your current location. There are 2 groups of them of 3 and 4 birds in each of the groups. They are the size of a duck... but don't look friendly...:) But that doesn't meant the combat is inevitable... it all depends on what you will do. Although I don't have "a ready solution for this" in my mind:)

Remember: you don't have your normal weapons... yet.

Belladona is in Melee rage from the stone portal. Shallan and the Rest is in Close range to it. What means with one Move they could get on its other side.

"Oops..."

As the strange birds dart towards them, Belladonna waves for everyone to run into the stone passageway for cover from the hostile creatures.

Belladonna tries to recall what she has learned to do when pterodactyls or other flying creatures come too close and have the potential of interrupting her spycraft. One of the strange birds veers off on its flight towards them to clip a bright flower.

That's it!

Something bright may distract them away from the group long enough for them to escape! She removes the bright scarf holding her hair back and ties it onto a nearby long stick. She plans to wave it to catch the bird's attention and run in the opposite direction, throwing it, and hiding while the birds go after the distraction!

Goodness, I'll look positively savage if I keep losing my stuff to distracting all these animals!

Looks like @spinningdice didn't log in GP for 4 days now, so for now I will RP her character in hope of her returning. If she will not... well... as only royal in our group I think I will make a NPC from her character and we could continue.

The idea with bright colored cloth for distraction is "a little stretched" I must say... :) But let's allow dice to decide...
@quilltid please roll Animal Lore(Int) or Deception(Cha) - depending how you more see your behavior. I will narrate results with Shallan's action if player won't be back soon.

Belladonna knows it's a long shot, but if she can get the strange birds away from the group and distracted enough from her, she may be able to circle back. She waves the bright scarf as wildly as she can and, once enough birds are heading her way, she runs back the way they came, looking for a good spot to hide.

Looks I will learn a lot with this game! :) Thanks for the link.

The dice has spoken that it was a perfect idea:)

We will use Party Retreat for this from the rules. It requires "group Luck check", but as the rest of your group is heading on the other side of the stone portal, while Belladona is running around with red scarf, they will be on the other side when Bella will have opportunity to retreat, so I will ask only you for Luck Check (Dex) to roll. If you succeed the whole party managed to retreat. If not... well we will see:)
Seeing that Belladona chooses to be a live bait for the birds, Shallan ordered The Rest with lowered but decisive voice to come quickly after her and leads the small group of survivors to the other side of mysterious stone portal, disappearing from Belladona's eyes very quickly.

Belladona runs down the stairs making as much noise and commotion as she can, waving the red scarf above her head with the intensity of someone really determined, who feels that the predators are literary closing in. After few steps down the stairs, fortunately she finds a proper bush and a branch to hang the scarf and immediately turns on her heel and heads back to the stone portal, where her friends have already disappeared.

Even to her surprise the trick seams to work and while she managed to do the half way towards the stone door, the birds got to the scarf and started tearing it from each other like a piece of meat. As she feels that the birds are starting to realize that their catch is not exactly editable and useful to them and their screams start to fade away, instinctively Belladona ducks towards the nearest bushes on the edge of the stone stairs to hide. Making sure that the leaves are covering her, she tries to peak outside only realizing that she is like 10ft(3m) from the stone door and camouflaging shade of the passage. She hastily look at the other direction - of strange birds - sticking her head a little out of the bush and sees that only few last of them are still interested in the scarf. The rest is staring to determine where they actually are... and where this tasty, well fed halfling went...

Belladonna has to decide if she risk the dash towards the door, its passage and concealing shadow, waits in the bushes or does something else.
OOC:
If you choose to dash into the shadows of stone portal's passage -> make a Luck(Dex) check. In your case it would be rolling equal or under your current luck. Success means the party escaped including Bella and end of combat:)

Descriptions such as of what Bella feels and how the dash look - is always welcome :) If you want to do something else, please describe.
Nov 11, 2024 9:24 pm
Belladonna peeks out of the bush and sees the stone door and potentially a safe haven from the birds is only 10 feet away, but 10 feet can feel like a mile when you are a halfling flagging from an adrenaline rush. She peeks back over to the strange birds that are now circling restlessly for a better meal than a scarf.

Shaking her head, Belladonna decides to risk it, taking advantage of the camouflaging shade along the way. If the birds had a sense of smell or better eyesight, they may very well find her in the bush after all. She hopes Kimbek, Sadur, Pepper, and Silver do not have to deal with the birds she's disturbed...

Silly as it looks, Belladonna attempts to almost hopscotch between the shady parts the leaves provide, using the foliage to dampen the sounds of her steps. As soon as she reaches the stone threshold, she cannot help but turn around and thumb her nose at them before disappearing into the passageway, hoping they haven't disturbed the residents too much.

Belladonna please deduct one point from your current luck - making it 11 now, for successful escape from the birds.
Belladonna stands in the relative safety of the shadows under the stone door for a few tense moment. But after some time she becomes quite sure that the birds has lost her track and as long she won't show to them soon, they shouldn't follow her on the other side of stone portal.

With careful steps and rising curiosity she heads towards the dim light visible on the other side of short tunnel. Reaching its end she sees 3 more steps leading to stone platform on which there are visible some ruins of earlier construction and some tent's among them. She doesn't see or feel any activity in the area in front of her. Someone could certainly be thinking that the apparent camp is abandoned at the movement, but she knows well enough that she just arrived at the place and shouldn't be sure of anything.

Her inner considerations are broken by a low whisper she hears on her left side. She crouches instinctively and turns her head towards... Shallan - fortunately! - sticking out her head out of the nearby bushes and lower threes:
"Pssst! Come here... Belladonna... please. Don't be so... visible."

If she would join them Belladonna would notice that The Rest of their group is hiding there with the princess and tiring to decide what to do next:
"You saved us out there - once more" - Shallan admits with apparent gratefulness and... maybe a little hint of jealousy, but more of admiration and well intended - referring to Bella's last action with the birds.

"Now I have no choice - not that I wouldn't do that anyway - but to ask you how we should approach this camp? For a sake of our group ease of mind. They started to value your opinion even more." - said Shallan with charming and honest smile, this time fully admitting that she depends and counts on Belladona's help in the current situation.

"We haven't seen any movement in the camp, while you were gone."

Belladonna squats down and joins Shallan and the rest of the refugees in the bushes, just out of sight of the camp. Her eyes bug a little when she realizes Shallan is asking her for advice on what to do next. She has certainly never been trained on what to do, but as she looks over all of them, she realizes really none of them have been trained for this. Best to face challenges head on and, if anything, her time spying and wheedling her way out of danger made her the most qualified for negotiations without risking royalty. Hopefully it was fellow refugees or kind locals they would be meeting!

The halfling sighed a little, wishing Brother Bartholomew was still with them. He would be the perfect mix of benign old man hiding steel if needed depending on how the meeting went. She shakes her head and focuses on what they do have.

"I'll do my best my lady to make us some friends! Did we perchance capture a feather or talon from the flying creature we can use during our talks? Also anything valuable other than our food? I will go with two others and we will ply our case. Do not blast anything with your invention unless it looks like we cannot escape with our lives. Better to face those birds outside than make enemies."
Nov 15, 2024 8:22 am
"In fact... yes... I took a feather... that the bird have left for us... while taking Brother Bartholomew with it..." - Shallan she sighed very heavily - "a terrifying exchange... indeed. But if it will safe us now... his sacrifice will not be in vain. I have nothing other than my invention and tools of value. But I think we will make better use of them, as long as you won't find another engineer in those tents...".

She gives the big white feather to Belladonna, placing it on her hand with the solemnity appropriate for a keepsake.

"Who will you choose to accompany you on this task??" - Shallan asked with a renewed curiosity (completely independent of the current situation), that could only be found in inventors.
OOC:
You can note the feather in your inventory if you want Bella. It's a perfect opportunity to introduce someone that was "among the Rest" :) For now I think we only need a name, general look and profession. Do you have any ideas for this? :)

Ah yes, thanks for the reminder!
Belladonna extends both hands and bows her head a little as she takes the big white feather from Shallan. The feather would hopefully provide weight to their story and their goal of finding their companion. Hostile or friendly, whoever is at the camp may slip where Brother Bartholomew was taken.

"I believe Delia and Auren would be best for this."

She looks at the two Royalists she refers to. First, a tall human woman steps forward, still dressed in her civilian clothing, but a leather pauldron and bracers and her strong arms hint at her barbarian training. A hooded elven man, shorter than most of his race so barely taller than the other humans, quietly steps forward. Back in the kingdom, Belladonna worked often with Auren, not only for his height advantage, but his deadly accuracy as a rogue employed like her with Brother Bartholomew to protect the royal family. I wonder how they sussed Auren out, or maybe they just don't like non-humans...

"I will take point. Please look as, um, non-menacing as possible, but be ready for trouble."

OOC:
Great! Thanks! I will take care of Auren and Delia from this point. But you can always add anything about their backstory or their behavior if you will feel the need to, in the future:)
"Be my guest little one! Hehe! Don't take that as offense, because I think every size has it uses!" - Delia said with almost too loud chuckle, while stretching her impressive muscles, visible even under her cloths. She stepped few more steps towards the camp, then stopped and turned back at Belladonna with a "So we're not going there right away?!?" written all over her face. Visibly eager for some action.

Auren grimaced slightly as he apparently concluded - in his opinion - that the barbarian woman seemed to be careless even at this stage of their infiltration. He smiled mysteriously at Belladona. He bowed. Then he looked expressively towards the camp. Apparently trying to notice some new details with his intriguing eyes. All of this without uttering a single word.

Belladona didn't really know what the bow meant. A greeting? Thanks for choosing? Letting them know that he remembered her from their previous cooperation. Well... that was Auren. You could never be sure what he was thinking or planing to do next.

What do you do?
OOC:
So what is your strategy for approaching this camp? For what are you looking for? Where do you want to go first? And how? :) Apparently Auren and Delia will listen to your orders, now that the princess designated you for this mission.
Nov 22, 2024 2:25 pm
Belladonna grimaces a little. Maybe Delia and Auren weren't the best choices after all as she sees Delia already being aggressive and Auren being enigmatic as always. She sighs a little and shrugs her shoulders, but then puts on a big smile to try and inspire confidence.

"Thank you for following my lead and Princess Shallan's confidence! I will go first and we go as a group. I am going to play my flute as we go up the stairs to the center area with the firepit. Hopefully friendlies come out to see what I am playing and who we are, but keep an eye out for attacks."

Belladonna is just hoping to find friendly intelligent people to talk to and determine if the whole group will be welcomed or not. She will also be on the lookout for more signs that these people may be on the smaller size and could be related to the hut Sadur found.

Before they head over, she notices Auren doing his usual surveillance and whispers, "Is there anything we need to watch out for Auren?"
Nov 25, 2024 11:17 pm
"Everything. Like always. Unfortunetlly I don't see anything new." - Auren simply answered with his melodic, but sharp voice. Having another smile on his face, that could be in the same measures: indeed expressing the happines of not seeing a new threat or... about how good his dinner was, last week when they were all still at the kingdom... Leaving Belladona a little confused again.

Delia hearing Belladona's declaration waits and says: "Of course you are going first! You are the boss right now. Lit-... I mean... damn... sure, you do, Boss!" - she makes clumsy gesture of letting someone pass in front of her, winks her eye towards Belladona and... smiles surprisingly charming towards her. Leaving an impression that she indeed is trusting Princess's judgment on her choice of leader for this mission. When Belladona is passes her, she starts to walk behind her and adds: "Always few steps behind you. We can do it! Either by your music or my fist!" - he chicles again, happy that things are put in motion now.

Auren fallows them at some bigger distance behind both of them. Which amused Belladone a bit, because from a distance it must have looked like he was pretending they didn't know each other - accidentally walking the same way while taking a Sunday walk in the park. And the fact was: they were approaching a foreign camp... in the middle of a tropical jungle.

Balladona pulled out her flute and began to play one of the popular and beloved melodies of halflings kin. She began to climb the stairs leading to the camp... At the same time, trying not to think too much about her two specific companions. She quickly felt the melodies, let her legs be carried by the next cheerful notes. These sounds, heard so many times in the Kingdom's many inns, seemed to fill her with growing vigor and joy. At first Belladona seemed to almost float towards center of stone square. Jump from foot to foot. But... The closer she was to the center of the camp, the more sad her melody began to be, and the slower her footsteps became. Until at some point... The music completely stopped.

Belladona realized at that moment that the camp seemed to be completely abandoned and no one would come out to meet and greet them.

Instead of a friendly smile and a lively greeting, they were met by a rather unsettling silence.

Only broken by the occasional flapping of one of the walls, one of the tents. Probably moved by a slight breeze, which meant that the camp must be located on the top of a hill they were constantly climbing and that one of the walls of the forest surrounding them was less dense than usual.

"The fire in the central hearth had not been burning for several days, perhaps even longer", Dalia observed with a gloomy expression.

"Although some of the tents are not even laced up. As if someone had gone out for a moment, but intended to return soon," Auden added in opposition to the above observation. And smiled again, for no particular reason. Or at least: not known to Belladona.

Then they both looked at Belladona - waiting for her decision of what to do next.

Auren, cryptic as always, and yet...

With the flute playing stopped, the oppressive silence is only broken by the slight breeze causing the tents to flap. Belladonna furtively moves to the table near the fire pit and grabs a sharp implement (hopefully a knife?).

"It looks like something came and disturbed the residents. Hopefully it just scared them off instead of, *gulp*, eating them. Let's keep on the lookout."

Belladonna leads the way to the smaller tent at the 1 o'clock position.
Dec 3, 2024 9:08 am
Belladonna finds a small knife on the table, but it's unfortunately is an ordinary kitchen knife... not much a weapon, but made of metal, so...
"Better that, then nothing" - she probably thinks.

Belladonna approaching smaller tent at the other side of the camp notices few things:
- this tent is well tied
- the bigger tent to its right have double cloth-doors. The right part is half open providing an easy access inside and the other have a strange hole in the tent fabric, in the shape of circle about 2ft in diameter with darkened edges, looking almost as burned, but as the rest of the door don't have any signs of flames Belladonna don't think it could be regular fire that made the hole. The interior of the bigger tent is shrouded in darkness, at least it looks that way from outside that is still well lit by the sun,
- behind the tent Belladona is approaching is wooden cart. From this position it is not visible if anything is in it or if it is empty,
- being so close tho the other side of a camp, Belladona is now quite sure that it's a wall of threes behind the cart that is much less dense or at least much less dense the other 3 parts of surrounding the camp,

Remaining consistent with her earlier decision, Belladonna unfastens the tent door with strange need of urgency in her and looks inside, trying to let in as much light possible by rising the tent's cloth as heigh as she can. Suddenly! The interior gets much more brighter to her surprise... only for Belladonna to realize that it was Delia who have helped her with the cloth and throw most of it on the tent roof - with a big and warm smile. She sighed as quietly as she could, trying not to reveal to her companions the tension that grew inside her. She looked back, seeing that Auren has already joined them, sitting on the bench, checking the fireplace, then appearing to be looking for some wood stash... trying to behave like it would be his own camp... and he just returned from a little trip in the woods...

Then she entered the tent.

The interior could be called very ordinary: a camp bed on the left, some blankets on it, a blue robe hanged above the bed...

Could... if on the other side of the tent, near the back wall there wasn't a fancy, very out-of-the-place for a judge environment, but small dresser with 3 drawers... and a object that looks like a glass ball positioned on top of it, approximately in the center of the top countertop.

What do you do?
Dec 4, 2024 3:51 am
Belladonna gripped the little kitchen knife in her hand tightly, tense from the silence and uncertainty of their situation. Grateful to have companions, but wishing they would take the situation more seriously, she creeps into the tent that Delia has helped to open up and looks around. It almost looked like any other tent she has been in with disarrayed blankets on a camp bed as if the inhabitant had only stepped out for a moment. Her attention is soon arrested by the strange spherical glass object at the back on top of the small dresser.

Thinking back to the burned hole in the tent fabric, she grabs one of the blankets and approaches the glass ball. With easy grace, she drops the blanket on top of the glass ball, making sure it's secure before rummaging through the drawers. Belladonna starts with the bottom drawer that is easiest for her to reach.

"Delia, anything interesting in the pockets of that robe by you?"
Dec 6, 2024 9:42 pm
OOC:
Checking how swift with the blanket Belladona was... wow... Great Success... this is one lucky halfling! :) After some thinking probably Initiative would be better here, instead Dex, but the result would be even better:)
Belladonna stepped cautiously into the tent, her sharp eyes immediately catching on a suspicious orb resting atop the upper surface of a small wooden dresser. As she approached, the orb seemed to react dramatically to the sunlight streaming in through the tent’s open flap.

The sphere absorbed each stray beam of light with an almost predatory hunger, drawing it inward, churning it into something else, and then radiating an otherworldly glow outward. This glow wasn’t just any light—it reached out toward Belladonna herself, casting long tendrils that seemed to brush against her skin like ghostly fingers, as though probing her presence, her very essence.

That was when the halfling’s instincts screamed at her—this wasn’t natural. Something was wrong. Acting purely on intuition, Belladonna snatched one of the blankets draped over a nearby bed and threw it over the orb. Instantly, the light dimmed, and the orb let out a piercing, eerie sound—a mix of an alarm siren and a high-pitched whistle—before falling silent as abruptly as a trumpet cut off mid-blare by an assassin’s arrow.

"Some kind of alarm?" Dalia, her companion, mused from the tent’s entrance, nodding approvingly at Belladonna’s quick thinking. "Nothing in the robes' pockets. But their owner? Definitely tall... and fond of hoods."

Belladonna turned her attention to the dresser’s drawers. Most were empty, but one yielded a collection of items:
- small, empty, bell-shaped glass bottle, with wooden stopper,
- small wooden figurine of a bird,
- slightly tarnished silver coin with intricate carvings along its rim. One - visible - side depicts a radiant sun,

She shakes her head and focuses on the task at hand. Belladonna decides to pocket everything she has found for now.

"Hey, are you stealing somebody's stuff?"

Delia has wandered over to Belladonna and her investigations through the drawers.

"N-no! This just might be better to check out on that table outside. Maybe they're clues about what happened."

She gives a side eye to the covered glass sphere and decides to leave it securely where it is for now. She has no experience with the strange presence she was feeling with it and will consult with the others about it, once they are together and decided on where to rest for the night.
