1. The Long Falls

Sep 8, 2024 9:33 am
The Halls of Arden Vul lie within a massive rock plateau that looms over the valley of the Swift River. From the top of the plateau, the Swift River drops 1,500’ to the valley floor in an enormous waterfall.

The Long Falls are visible on a clear day from many miles away on the verdant and temperate valley floor, appearing as a thin stream of white against the grey and green of the cliff face. They are audible from three miles away as a dull buzzing sound in the distance. At two miles it becomes a sustained white noise, as loud as a person speaking. At one mile a white cloud of mist and moisture, roughly 200 yards in diameter, becomes evident, and the sound is loud enough to impede conversation. Beneath the falls conversation is almost impossible, and the sound is as loud as a freight train among the smell of the damp, mould, and mildew.

As one closes towards the falls, about a mile away, the Colossal Defenders become apparent. The one representing Arden is placed just to the right of the falls, on the east side of the river. The other, representing Vul, stands another 400 yards further to the east. The figures are carved out of the rock face and extend a good 1,000-1,100’ up the cliff face.

The Colossus of Arden is an enormous crouching warrior woman, helmed, with her right hand gripping a sword blade down. The left hand is extended outward, palm up; the palm is only about 100’ above the valley floor.

The Colossus of Vul is altogether different: slender, cowled, arms folded across its chest, with a stone staff in the crook of the left arm. It always appears to be looking at those who glance at it.

You are currently standing in front of the cliff face, to the east of the falls, having approached along the old Imperial Road from the town of Gosterwick to the south. Below is a picture of what you can see. I have also added a map of your surroundings to the "Maps" thread. Rather than bombarding you with a mass of information in this first post, have a look at these two images and ask if you’d like further details or explanation of anything you can see.

There is one additional feature that isn’t shown in either the picture or the map - a bridge spanning the river to the south of the pool at the foot of the waterfall.

Lore (common knowledge): Arden the Swordswoman was one of the Twenty Worthies of the ancient Archontean Empire, and the companion and lover of Vul the Sorcerer. With Vul, she founded the city that bears her name. She is famous for her Twelve Labours, which have become a ubiquitous part of Archontean culture.

Vul the Sorcerer was one of the Twenty Worthies of the ancient Archontean Empire. Along with his companion and lover, Arden, Vul located the hidden caverns below the plateau and founded the site that bears his (and Arden’s) name.

"Look at that view!" Jacky has to cup his hands around his mouth to make himself heard above the crashing of the falls. The halfling grins. "Now the tallfolk know what it's like to be in our shoes, hah!" He chortles, nudging Grimidek none too gently with his elbow.

The sheer size of the statues make it hard to look at anything else.

Vasco looked at the enormity of the structures with a wide-eyed, open-mouthed expression. His eyes scanning the structures trying to estimate the scale and possible entrances. After watching for sometime he gave up looking at the upper structure and concentrated at the base. For once, his eyes passed over the face of Arden and Vul as he wondered what manner of things and creatures must be residing inside the city. He had mostly skulked in the busy streets of cities and rooftops, delving into something this big was never in his mind. But, he needed money and so here he was. Amidst the crashing sound of the waterfall and the mist like haze of moisture, Vasco focused on lower base trying to find any entrance to this famous city.

Thrudmarr stares up at the statues, slack-jawed. "Whoa. Big sword..." He pauses, then grins widely. "Ha, big axe better!" He pats the shaft of his own axe slung over his shoulder.

Squinting at the cliff face, he points to what look like lines carved into the rock climbing up, turning to his companions and speaking loudly to be heard over the dull roar of the falls. "What those...climbey things on side?" His eyes follow the lines upward. "Stuff up top too. We go up?"
Sep 8, 2024 3:02 pm
Zacharias, or Zach, had trouble processing what he was seeing. Although, to be fair, that was not uncommon for him. Wow. Big statues. What a sword! Zach loved swords. He looked at Thrudmarr. Yeah, axes are OK, but they aren't swords. Zach lovingly traced his hands up and down his claymore's haft. Not many of his fellow students could wield the bastard sword as well as he could. But that was in the past. Itching for something more, he joined up with yet another group braving the fabled halls of Arden Vul to gain both prowess and treasure. If only he knew what prowess meant…

He went back to stand next to, and pet, Billie. Zach liked animals; they were simple. What do we do now? he asked the group. He knew enough to know that things usually turned out better when others made the hard decisions and just pointed him at things to be poked with his sword. That's a BIIIIIIG sword. Would be nice to be able to wield that!.
OOC:
Player me wants to ask if there is anything about the statues which would lend itself to possible secret entrances or storage rooms and if anything could be seen sitting on Arden's palm, but I cannot justify my character knowing enough to ask it :).

Grim gazes brown-bulging eyes up the cliff.

Aye, Jacky! Er’yone has ta be looking straight up in de presence of our two biggest forebears. Carved fer-ever in stone, dose two bring er’ybody else low!

Well now, we can certainly go up if we want! But dere may just be a way through, if a passage be hidden somewhere r’ some-such hereabouts!

Waddling up closer to the stonework, our dwarven priestly fellow tries discerning the presence of hidden passageways.

Zacharias follows the waddling dwarf towards the cliff face and statues. I have a crowbar here somewhere if you need it, your most dwarfley holitude, or holidays, or however you are to be addressed, he says with a sheepish smile.
Sep 8, 2024 8:11 pm
Ellagel, or Ella, as most non-elves called her after a while, had been her usual quiet self during the long morning trek. Reaching this point on the road, she smiled openly at the magnificent view. "Sublime," she said simply. She was a woman of few words, as her companions had realized since she had found herself mixed with this band of adventurers. She was agreeable and easy to deal with, despite her mostly silent attitude. She sported that inscrutable little smile: was it a smirk, or was she genuinely happy to see the falls?

She listened attentively to the exchanges among his adventuring companions.

"I'll follow you, if you want to poke at the cliff walls. But didn't you say, Zacharias — she tended to avoid contracting other people's names — that you heard that 'the safest entrance' was the Pyramid, up yonder?" she asked, pointing to the top of the cliff. "And I heard there's an Inn north of the ruins, where we might need to regroup after the days toil. Green dragon or not, we might as well ascend the pyramid and have a look from the top..."

That was probably more talk from the elf than the party had heard in the last four days.

The above assumes that we all shared our rumors on our way here.

I realize that Ellagel is 2,5 pounds above her carrying limit in order to move 90'. Would there be a kind soul willing to carry her bedroll (5lb) or two of her rations (2lb each) so that she need not remover her backpack in order to move at her armor's top speed of 90'?

Jacky glances at the elf, noticing her laden by her heavy load. "There's room in Billie's saddlebag to share some of that weight if you like. He won't mind. No charge for the pretty lady," the halfling adds impishly.

"We're meant to go all the way up?" he continues, craning his head up to look beyond the giant statues. The dismay in his voice is unfeigned. "Why, that'd take hours, if not more than a day."

Thrudmarr turns to Ella, his grin fading slighly. "You said something about a dragon up there? Thrudmarr not like dragons. Big and scaly, bad news!" Thrudmarr’s eyes widen as he scans the bottom of the cliff face and points towards a shape that looks like a building in the distance. "Hey! Look there! Maybe we visit, ask directions? No dragons in there I bet!"
OOC:
The building is in the picture, right side of the path just before the cliff. It appears on the map too.

Vasco squeezed his eyes and tried to notice any probable route they could use to get inside. He was silently listening to everyone's screaming conversation as his own voice was raspy and he kept to himself. In his line of work lying silent was paramount and it complemented him. However, now he was adventuring with a big party now and they need to communicate properly.

He spoke out to everyone, "We could hike the winding path on the right side of Arden's statue or we could check the structure Thrudmarr pointed."

Maybe, Lady Elmersglue, I mean Ellagel, I heard a lot of things. I even wrote it down! Zacharias fumbles in his pouch and pulls out a grease-stained napkin with something resembling Archontean script. Zacharias starts to read slowly: Big building Thoth is easiest and safest way into Halls. Big stairs lead to the first dungeon level and is very old with lots of graffeeztiny…groftni…writing. Some writing is good stuff!

Yes, lady Elspeth, you are right. You must be really smart and stuff! If you say there is an inn up there, there must be! But maybe we skip the dragon? Takes lots and lots of poking to make dragons stop breathing fire. At least that's what they said at school.

Hearing Vasco's comment, Zacharias shrugs. Doesn't matter to me, so long as we don't split up. We split up, it's much easier for nasty things to pick us off. Zach takes out a whetstone and lovingly sharpens his blade as he waits.
Sep 9, 2024 12:42 pm
"You can call me Ella, friends" the elf smiled gently, noting, once again, her comrades difficulty to pronounce her name. It was often so with the more short-lived species.

And turning to Jacky, she added "It is most kind, Jacky. If Billie can carry my bedroll and blankets, it'd be enough. Thank you."
OOC:
She'll proceed to transfer the two items to the mule. I'll keep them in my inventory, but indicate that they are carried by Billie.

Jackie says:
The sheer size of the statues make it hard to look at anything else.
Jacky gazes upwards, mesmerised by the sheer scale and magnificence of the two statues. Both are carved in a socialist-realist/art-nouveau style, i.e. all clean lines designed to suggest rather than provide actual details.

Arden’s statue depicts her kneeling on her right knee; her right hand holds a broadsword point down, while her left hand is extended, palm up, about 100’ off the valley floor. Her head is helmed in a hoplite-style helmet (with chin greaves); her eyes stare downward at her palm. Hair braids extend below the helmet, and she appears to be wearing a breastplate. Although soaking wet and moss-covered, no significant pieces have fallen off of the colossus. Water stains make it appear as if Arden is weeping.

Vul appears as a slender, cowled figure with arms folded across his chest. A stone staff with a large pommel rests in the crook of his left arm. The right arm has fallen away, as has most of the left leg. The cowl is deep, rendering the features invisible from below.
Vasco says:
Amidst the crashing sound of the waterfall and the mist like haze of moisture, Vasco focused on lower base trying to find any entrance to this famous city.
Vasco can see no obvious entrances at the base of the cliff. The only obvious way forward is upwards, along a ramp that climbs the entirety of the cliff face in a series of switchbacks. However, this route is in a very poor state of repair. Its flagstones are broken and rutted, and the path narrows to as little as 5’ in places. The surface also looks slippery due to the moisture from the Falls. Furthermore, there is no wall or guard rail to prevent a misstep from sending an unfortunate victim plummeting to the valley below.
Grimidek says:
Waddling up closer to the stonework, our dwarven priestly fellow tries discerning the presence of hidden passageways.
Inspecting the stonework, the enormity of the task of searching for hidden passageways in a cliff face this vast dawns on Grimidek. He can see nothing obvious at ground level, and any sort of search would likely take hours or even days.

Each square on the map of the cliff face is 50’. So to search one such section, to a height of only 10’, would take someone an hour. It’s doable if you want to try. But it’s also potentially quite a time-sink.
Jacky says:
"We're meant to go all the way up?" he continues, craning his head up to look beyond the giant statues. The dismay in his voice is unfeigned. "Why, that'd take hours, if not more than a day."
You estimate it would take a few hours in an uninterrupted ascent, but not as long as a day.
Thrudmarr says:
Thrudmarr’s eyes widen as he scans the bottom of the cliff face and points towards a shape that looks like a building in the distance.
There is indeed what looks to be a ruined watch tower just to the east of the old Imperial Road. All of the upper levels have collapsed leaving only the ground floor intact. However, even this is covered with moisture and slime due to its proximity to the Falls. A broken door barely covers an entrance that faces the road.

I think that covers all the main points mentioned in your posts above ... let me know if I've missed anything.

It might be a good idea for the party to start a separate sheet for Billie's inventory. Her movement will also be influenced by her encumbrance. And, say, just for example, if she's plucked from the party in the claws of a hungry dragon, we'll need an accurate record of exactly what you've lost!

Well now, I’m gonna propose we visit that ol’ ruinous watch tower just off’a da road a-way’s. If it’s gonna the us a lotta time fer ta ascend de cliff, well we may as well see what dere’s ta see hereabouts first!

Chopping, poking, stabbing—finally something to do!. Zacharias puts away his whetstone, stands up, gazes along both edges of the rather extensive sword, and rescabbards it. So slimey tower first and long climb after? Fine with me.

Billie's only got room in his saddlebag for 6lbs, so I think Ella can only transfer her bedroll to the mule.

Rather than a separate sheet, I added Billie as a follower with inventory to Jacky's sheet, but I have no idea how many hit points the mule has. OSRIC says a mule has 3 HD and a Level/XP value of 2/20+2/hp.
"Makes sense, since we'd be passing by it anyway," Jacky agrees loudly. He tugs Billie's reins. "Let's be off to the tower, then!"

The ruined tower is set back around 100’ from the road. It’s built in what you recognise as an Archontean style, although it doesn’t look ancient. Its construction and subsequent ruination must have been relatively recent. All of the upper levels have collapsed into the tower and surrounding area, leaving only a treacherous-looking ground floor. You estimate the tower's footprint is around 50’ x 50’, and you can see only a single entrance.

There are no obvious signs of life. The sound of the Falls would drown out any noises, but you certainly can’t see any light sources emanating from within or tell-tale signs of smoke from fires.

Ellagel quickly strings her longbow, and selects an arrow to nock. There was no point in exposing the wood or the strings to such humidity without purpose, she thought. She will wait for the others to begin approaching the only entrance, while she looked around for any apparent threats on the outskirts of the ruined structure.
OOC:
Made corrections in my inventory. Transferring only the bedroll, Ellagel is at 77,5/80 pounds of equipment on her person, which should allow her to move at 90'. At least until she picks up a pebble or two. Regarding the approach to the tower, she'll follow the others, but won't be the spearpoint of any such movement.
Sep 10, 2024 3:32 pm
Thrudmarr grips his axe tightly, and looks to Zach and the stout Grimidek. "We strong guys go first yeah? Chop if bad things come out."
OOC:
Should we discuss regular marching order? I figured the two fighters and maybe the dwarf would be up front normally. But we should probably ask @Vasco to check the entrance before barging in.

Vasco creeped closer to the entrance and hugged the sidewall. He then peeked into the entrance trying to discern any shapes or just to adjust his eyes with the darkness inside. Unable to make out anything clearly, he strained his ears trying his level best to listen to any sounds coming from the inside of the tower.

With obvious sincerity—although a complete lack of tact—Zacharias whispers to Thrudmarr: Master Throbstar, are you tall enough to see inside without a boost? Maybe I should go in front of you and you can peek between my legs? This way we both can see if there are any bad guys.

"You go first if want Mr Zach. We be right behind." Thrudd looks to Vasco peeking in the entrance slightly ahead, waiting for his signal.

Zach steps in front of Thrudmarr, but moves to the side as Grimdek waddles up, investigating the stonework. Trying to keep somewhat quiet as a matter of operational security, Zach softly says to Grimdek, when you are done checking for surprises and traps, Master Gromdork, let me know and I'll take point.

There were quite a few men around the entrance of the ruined structure now. She wouldn’t be able to shoot through that mess of warriors into the ruin, and she wouldn’t be able to see anything moving in there anyway. So she looked about once more, trying to see if, from her position, she could identify any apertures or entrances that might have escaped detection earlier.
OOC:
Thanks @Avraham, I might accept your offer at a later time. For now she is fine, and as she eats rations and fires arrows her overall load will decrease. But she can’t leave her backpack behind, seeing as it contains her most prized possession: her spellbook.

You collectively spend a turn surveying the tower from the outside. It appears that the main doorway is the only aperture in the intact ground level. There are no other windows, arrow slits or secondary entrances (that you can find).

The decrepit hinges of the wooden door are just about holding it in place, although there’s enough of a gap to the door frame such that you can peek through with a very restricted view. It’s too dark inside to discern much detail other than a rubble-strewn floor.

Grimidek’s quick structural appraisal yields no particular concerns. Sure, the tower has seen better days, but what remains of the ground floor seems robust enough.

"Going in?", the elf exclaimed from the rear, speaking quite loudly in order to be heard by the frontliners.

Having failed to see any other entrances to the tower, Ellagel decided to keep watch over the open area around the collapsed fortification. If and when her companions decided to enter the tower, she would move to the door, and provide cover for them.

Zacharias grips his large shield tightly and finds the perfect balance point on the haft of his claymore. He cautiously pushes the wooden door ouyt of the way with the shield, and enters the tower, shield raised but not occluding his sight.
OOC:
Zacharias would like to move five feet to the right if that is unobstructed, both to allow Grimdek and the others a clear view into the tower and to have the entrance way out of the immediate sweep of his sword (he is right-handed). He then wants to look around and identify any dangers. If the right is too rubble-strewn, he would move left and just be careful not to behead Grimdek. Waiting on GM for response for location and observations.
Sep 11, 2024 7:42 pm
Thrudmarr moves to follow Zacharias into the tower, positioning himself on the opposite side of the doorway from his companion. He keeps his eyes peeled for any movement or unusual shapes in the dim interior.
OOC:
Thrudmarr will enter the tower right after Zacharias, taking up a position on the left side of the doorway (assuming Zacharias went right).

Grim sidesteps just enough to allow his companions room to move and set up.

I don’t see any problems wid steppin’ on de floor n’ such. But blast, if dis place don’t be lookin’ like some old ruin! I wonder what caused it justa fall apart so?

Hmph!

After proper dwarven consternation, ol’ Grim readies a light hammer, for to toss at first sign of trouble, then waddles right on into his place of marching order.
OOC:
@Burbage Would Grim be able to discern what might’ve caused the ruin, obvious points of impact, recent break-in etc? Feel free to ignore if negative.
Sep 12, 2024 2:26 pm
Grim says:
Would Grim be able to discern what might’ve caused the ruin, obvious points of impact, recent break-in etc?
That’s a good question. Judging by its construction and the general state of the stonework, Grim reckons the tower is probably only a couple of centuries old (Grim could well be older than the tower!). Therefore, even by the normal quality standards of human stonemasons, you wouldn’t expect such a degree of ruin due to the passage of time alone. Grim’s best guess is that there have been one or more significant impacts to the upper stories, but it’s impossible to tell what they might have been.
Thrud and Zach enter the tower through the open door. Their immediate observation is that the tower’s thick stone walls reduce the thunderous noise from the waterfall somewhat. Also, unlike its exterior, the inside of the tower is surprisingly dry. However, aside from the daylight spilling in through the open door, there are no other sources of illumination. This makes it difficult for them to gauge the extent of their surroundings; they’ll need a torch or lantern to continue their exploration.

Seeing nothing in the immediate vicinity, Zach exhales slowly. No longer whispering, he turns to Thrudmarr and says It's dark in here. Frudmerk, do you have a free hand for a torch, or do I need to sheathe my sword?
Sep 12, 2024 5:23 pm
"Torch? Uh...I got lamp. Hold on."
OOC:
I carry a medium shield, I think that requires a hand to hold it and can't be strapped to a forearm like a buckler? If so, I'll free up a hand by slinging it across my back or however else a shield is carried when not held. Then I'll pull out my bronze lamp and light it.

I don't see in the book how much light lamps give off nor how much oil they consume. If we assume same amount of light as a torch it gives 40 feet of illumination. As for oil, if we assume same rate as lanterns it's 4 hours a pint, which I can keep track of. @Burbage let me know if different

I have torches in my equipment, but I would have to sheathe either sword or shield, and taking point, I'd prefer to stay as prepared as possible and be backlit by someone in the second rank. Which would be Grimdek, I reckon, given that Thrudmarr is standing next to me, now that I think about it.

OSRIC, page 124, "Light and Vision - "Bullseye lanterns illuminate 80 ft (in a 10 ft wide beam) and burn a pint of oil every 4 hours. Such lanterns can be masked. Hooded lanterns illuminate a 30 ft radius and also burn one pint of oil every 4 hours. Magical weapons illuminate 10-20 ft for an infinite period of time (dagger 10 ft, longsword 20 ft). Torches shed 40 ft of illumination and burn out in 6 turns (1 hour). Standard game candles shed 20 ft of illumination and burn out in 30 minutes, although longer-lasting ones may be purchased at additional cost."

So your lantern provides 30' of ilumination.

Thrud lights a lantern to give you a better view of your surroundings. Perhaps reassuringly, perhaps disappointingly, the space seems empty apart from the piles of rubble that litter the floor.

What strikes you as slightly odd, given that this is a dry sheltered spot at the base of such an arduous climb, is the lack of indications that this tower is in regular use as a staging post for adventurers as they prepare to ascend to Arden Vul. There are no signs of recent habitation, such as an old camp fire, or discarded supplies.

Seeing that a light has been struck and that most of the party's strength has entered the collapsed building, Ellagel follows into the tower, her eyes tearing up slightly at the first contact with the torch's fumes.
OOC:
Does the torch illuminate the entirety of this first level? Testlum's map suggests that the tower is roughly 50ft radius (unless each square represents 5ft?), so our torch shouldn't illuminate the whole first floor. How high does the ceiling seem to be? Are there collapsed areas, where the ceiling has caved in under the weight of the debris?

The tower is 50' in diameter so, yes, you have enough illumination to see the entire space. The ceiling is, more or less, intact. Certainly, there's enough material above you to block out the light and keep the ground floor dry. The ceiling is about 10' high.

Vasco crept inside the tower following others and closed his eyes for a moment to adjust to the dim light of the torch. Sure, there is no problem finding sling stones in this area. A dozen sling stones weigh 2 lbs (OSRIC, page 32).
Zacharias says:

Zach cannot immediately see any enemies, doors (other than the one you entered through), trapdoors or staircases/ladders. However, he can see signs of where a wooden stairway was previously in place, although that is now missing and the corresponding hole in the ceiling is blocked with fallen masonry.

If you wish to search more actively for any of the above, let me know where and how you plan to search (and bear in mind that this will take at least a turn).

Grim stoops low to the debris-ridden floor. Which, isn’t that far for him to go!
Our dwarven fellow searches active,y, among the rubble, for a trap door in the floor.
Sep 14, 2024 4:40 pm
"Why look at junk?" Thrudmarr asks Grim. "We fight bad guys or find treasure. No bad guys here."

Seeing no danger, he pulls out a piece of chalk and starts painstakingly drawing letters on the wall. Eventually he proudly has drawn "THRUD" on the wall, with the R backwards. He nods, satisfied to himself. Turning back to the dwarf, he watches him search for a moment.

"Thrudmarr strong. Can move big rocks if you want. Just say where."
OOC:
I am fine with us taking time to search, and Thrudmarr will assist if someone asks him to.
Sep 14, 2024 5:10 pm
After giving Thrudmarr a big thumbs up and a smile of encouragement, Ella observed as the dwarf began looking around for some concealed passage.

She considered the tower once more, trying to imagine where she would have built a secret passage into this floor.
OOC:
Two questions:
- is it obvious that this floor once had internal walls separating different areas, or does it look like it’s had always been a single, vast circular chamber?
- how thick are the tower’s walls? I would suppose at least 10ft wide? If so that means that any secret entrance (or exit) might be hidden in the masonry of the walls.

That’s a lot of surface to search: a circumference of roughly 160 feet, and an area of 7800square feet (78 sections of 10x10). It takes one turn for a person to check a 10x10 section, I believe… we’ll be here till nightfall unless we choose a few specific areas to look into.

As far as you can tell, it has always been a single chamber. There is no evidence of internal walls.

Judging by the tower's location, you reckon it was more likely a watchtower than a defensive structure. Hence the walls are not that thick. Probably only 2-3’.

You spend a turn searching through the rubble on the tower’s floor and do indeed find something. Something slightly strange. Opposite the door, Grim uncovers a trapdoor in the floor. It is made of wood with iron fixtures. But as Grim clears the debris from atop it, he notices that the trapdoor is cold to the touch. Icily cold. Unnaturally cold.

"Stand back, everyone. I have just the thing." With a flourish, he brandishes a 10 ft pole. "Aunt Agatha, gods rest her soul, made sure I never forget to bring this with me."

The halfling proceeds to rap on the surface of the trapdoor a couple of times, then tries to hook the pole under one of the iron fixtures to tug up the trapdoor.

Assuming Vasco and Grimdek mentioned the cold out loud, since the DM shared that with everyone. Also, I am assuming Zacharias knows more about fighting than most anything other general information (although he still has an open language slot). He is on the dimmer side of average, but not a complete moron. @Burbage, if you disagree, I'll strike the sentence.
Zacharias slowly approaches the side of the trap door, readying both sword and shield. According to my teachers, extreme cold usually means either undead or elementals. Before we open the door, ready yourselves for either.
Sep 15, 2024 3:34 pm
Ella approached the rest of the party as it positioned itself around the trapdoor. Cautious as ever, she stayed a good 15ft from the entrance.

"Are you sure about this? We’ve heard nothing about frozen halls."

Despite her curiosity, she was obviously not sure opening the trapdoor was a good idea.

After Vasco gives the all-clear concerning traps, Jackie and Grim manage to thread one end of the halfling’s 10’ pole through the trapdoor’s circular steel handle and lift. The trapdoor hinges along one edge to reveal an opening in the floor.

However, as soon as the trapdoor is fully open, a floating, ghostly, translucent figure rises rapidly from below. It has the appearance and attire of an Archontean noble, although its expression is a terrifying combination of fury and pain. The temperature in the tower drops noticeably.

Please can someone (anyone) in the party check for surprise (1d6)? I will do the same for the ghostly figure who was not expecting to be disturbed.

Indeed, but as the cleric among us, I don't think it metagaming for Zach to call out to Grim and ask what that is. Which I will do right now.
Zacharias swallowed uncomfortable and then gave a piercing yell WARE, THE DEAD LURK AMONG US!!. Holy Gumball, WHAT IS THAT THING?!
OOC:
@Burbage, IF my character thinks/knows that only magic weapons affect the apparition, his intention is to Flee from Combat immediately, since there is nothing he can do. If he does not know that, he will attack (and find out one way or another). If on his first attack (he gets 2 on odd rounds) he sees nothing happens he will yell at the others to flee, he wont take his second attack in round 1 since it is useless, and then either flee in round 2 if no one else is engaged in melee with the apparition. IF someone needs protetcion or time to escape, then Zach will combine Fighting retreat with Parrying to defend himself and allow others time to get out. Of course, if his first attack does cause damage, he will stay and fight on all further rounds.

Don't get too hung-up or overthink the role-playing vs. metagaming contradiction. Personally, I'm OK for there to be some blurring of the lines between what players know and what characters know. I think I said previously, I see old school gaming as being as much a challenge for the players as the characters.

Vasco recoils and lands on his back. His face is twisted with an expression of terror. He slowly started to crawl back from the trapdoor.
OOC:
I wasn't expecting a ghost. Being a first level character though, I don't think Vasco is equipped to fight with an incorporeal creature. I will try to negotiate if the apparition is willing to talk or frankly just run away.

"Gorthad!!", Ella spat in her native tongue as she realized what the emerging form was that stepped out of what was obviously a crypt.

As she retreated, back to the door, she reflexively nocked an arrow and began drawing, despite thinking it would be a useless gesture.
OOC:
Ellagel is falling back to the door, a 15-20ft move. If that is incompatible with shooting, she’s glad to forfeit the shot and spare the arrow. She has obviously decided to get out of the tower, but might shoot to distract and provide cover, if necessary.
Sep 16, 2024 9:17 pm
"Floating not-alive person! Thrudmarr axe no good for ghosts!"
Seeing his companions retreating, Thrudmarr starts to flee away towards the exit.
OOC:
Thrudmarr will flee towards the exit, assuming the ghost isn't in the talking mood. He won't attack unless the ghost directly threatens him or one of his friends.

Where in relation to the entrance is the trapdoor? I have 90 feet of normal movement. I'm pretty sure we can all make it out in one move action if we're all fleeing even if it's at the very back.

Thrud, Ella, Grim (your +4 dwarf bonus to saves against magic applies) and Jackie all pass their saving throws. Vasco and Zach fail.

The sight of the ghostly figure is too much for Vasco and Zach to bear. They are compelled to flee, screaming, out of the tower and back towards the Imperial Road and the waterfall. As they do so, they feel their very life force diminishing in the mere presence of the apparition.

Please can Vasco and Zach each make two further dice rolls to determine the consequences of the encounter … 2d8 and 3d6.

The remaining party members are free to act according to their original declarations for the round. Jackie, Ella and Thrud retreat. Is Grim still committed to attempting to turn the tower’s resident or, in light of events, is he going to join the general withdrawal?

As the ghostly apparition rises from the trapdoor, Zach’s teeth begin to chatter. Steady, Zacharias, steady. Zach feels his sword begin to slip as his hands start weeping a clammy, cold sweat. He tries to grip his sword tighter, and succeeds—until the ghost opens its spectral mouth. Zach feels the cold, cold wind of the grave loop around his neck, down his back, and into his very heart. He envisions cold, skeletal hands fastening bony knuckles around his throat. He feels what seems like an ethereal tongue made of ice and blood lick his eyeballs. The awful odor of the charnel house invades his nostrils and then his lungs. no. No. NO. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! AAAAARRRRRGGGHHHHH! In rank panic Zach backpedals and then flees as fast as he possibly can. Unthinking and uncaring of anything other than to escape the very servant of Death itself who has chosen Zacharias Polipulis as its next victim.

Ruined Tower
As most of the party gathers outside the tower, beyond the immediate clutches of the "Archontean noble", it is clear that the encounter has taken a physical toll on Vasco and Zach (especially). There are a few more wrinkles around their eyes and across their brows. Zach has gained a few flecks of grey in his hair. And neither feels quite as lithe and supple as they did this morning. They are also both in a state of sheer panic - unfocussed, unsettled, rambling and incoherent - unable to engage with the world in any meaningful way.

Zach has aged ten years, Vasco has aged four.

Both are still in a state of panic, and incapable of meaningful contributions to the party until they recover from that state.

Meanwhile … Grim stands alone, facing the apparition in a bold and courageous attempt to parley with it. However, the futility of this quickly becomes apparent as the ghostly figure sweeps towards him, a look of pure malice upon its face.

The onlookers outside the tower see the ghost rush towards Grim and then apparently merge with him. Grim tenses, his limbs outstretched and his back arched as the Archontean spirit attempts to assert control over the dwarf’s body.

The ghost is attempting to possess Grim in a battle of wills. Please make a saving throw versus Spells. Again, you can use your +4 dwarf bonus. You also get a further +2 because Grim’s Intelligence and Wisdom are relatively higher than those of the ghost.

@Burbage Would Jacky be able to re-enter, grab the pole and run outside again in 1 round?

Pending the outcome of Grim's actions of course.
You may attempt that next round. It's likely to bring you within melee range of the ghost though.

Vasco had crawled back on his back for some distance after which he stood up and gave a wail while running towards the tower exits. At the entrance he stumbled and rolled over the ground feeling the blow deep in his bones. He oddly felt stiff and but then again he had seen a ghost, it was better to be alive than to be stiff and not moving. Outside the tower, the white noise of the waterfall was a pleasant comfort that helped him to get distracted from whatever was going inside.

Standing alone against the ghost, Grim soon realizes it’s time to retreat!
Picking up what he can carry out, including the ten foot pole, our dwarven fellow makes for the exit!
We’ll be seein’ ya again someday, Grim declares back at the apparition!

Zacharias ran and ran. His heart beating faster and faster until it felt like a fireball had ignited in his chest. His breath came in huge panting gasps. He felt more tired than he had ever been in his entire nineteen years. He reached the riverbank and collapsed. He had no concept of time; his brain was racing with visions of ghastly death. After almost an hour he finally was able to rise to his knees. He stumbled to the river to quench an overwhelming thirst. As he bent over the river, he screamed in horror, for the reflection staring back at him wasn't the teenager he expected, but that of a grown man with faint scattering of white hairs among his head. His formerly baby-smooth skin was now creased with crow lines and other creases. The ghost had siphoned a decade of his best years! Not even one day on this adventure and he was so much closer to death. Zach collapsed in tears and impotence.
OOC:
Age updated to 29 (19); the parenthesis is just in case some diety has pity :). Zach is out of commission for 5 turns/50 minutes between the shock of the ghost and the shock of aging. @Pedrop, I am relying on you to let me know when Zach may re-enter the conversation. Thanks!

Ruined Tower
With a guttural roar, Grim expels the ghost through sheer dwarven stubbornness. As it is forced to separate, the ghost’s fury only intensifies. It begins to transform, losing its ethereal, translucent quality and solidifying into something more ectoplasmic. Grim sees this period of transformation as his chance to escape; he grabs Jackie’s pole and runs for the exit.

Now distinctly solid, the ghost starts to pursue. But it becomes clear that it is reluctant, or unable, to leave the tower. It halts at the threshold, howls a single word - "NYEMA!!!" - and then turns and heads back into the darkness.
It is going to take an hour for both Vasco and Zach to calm down sufficiently to continue adventuring. What do the rest of you want to do during that period? Shall I just skip forward an hour so that you can continue together? Or do you want to investigate anything in the meantime?

Peering inside the ruined tower, Jacky's nearly bowled over as Grim makes his exit - and to the halfling's joy, with his 10 ft pole in tow. "Well done, Grim!" Jacky claps the dwarf on the back. "Brave of you to try to talk to that thing. That's my first time seeing a ghost. I wonder who or what this Nyema is?"

"Oh, dear," he continues, looking at the fleeing Vasco and Zach. "I think we'd better go after them while they're still in our sights!"

With renewed appreciation for the dwarves priest’s steadfastness in the face of horrors beyond death, Ellagel helped herd the party back together, taking care not to allow Billie to head off and graze too far from the group.

Seeing the devastating effects of time on her two companions greatly impressed the elf. Their species was known for its longevity and she was shocked to see what the apparition had done to the humans.

"We’ll be more careful in the future, yes?" Although it was worded as a question, Ella’s phrase was pronounced as a statement of fact.

The spectral apparition has disappeared? Could it be possible to rush in and close the door in a single round? Also does it seem, from outside the tower that the intense cold is still emanating from the entrance to the lower level/crypt?

It's not "disappeared". It's just retreated back into the darkness of the tower. If you wanted to try and rush in and close the trapdoor, it would require an initiative roll to see if you could achieve that before the ghost reacts.

You can't sense the cold from outside the tower; the trapdoor is 30-40' away from the entrance.

"Yes, Ella right. We be very careful now. No more ghost houses! Ghost magic make Zach and Vasco look like fathers instead of brothers. Very strange magic."

Thrud turns to the dwarf. "Grim very brave though! Take on ghost with no axe! Thrudmarr impressed." He gives the dwarf a hearty pat on the back, perhaps a bit too forceful.

Thrudmarr looks up towards the top of the cliff and points at the buildings spotted on the ridge. "Maybe we find wise person up in city? They know how to make friends young again."

Aye, time fer us ta be gittin’ on up top, den!
Our dwarven fellow gazes brown bulging eyes around the area for path of least resistance!

Ella nodded at Grimidek's and Jacky's suggestion. She had assisted in recovering their comrades and had, in her own way, tried to help them return to a normal state.

By now she had abandoned the idea of attempting to run back into the tower to close the passage. Whichever party came after them would have to deal with the ghost as best they could.

She decided to look at the cliff to determine the most auspicious path.

OOC:
To the top!
"That one go alla way up." Thrudmarr points to the right side path immediately in front of them. "See caves too. Can stop and eat lunch there?"
Sep 22, 2024 1:51 pm
Zacharias slowly climbs to his knees and then his feet. His joints ache and he feels twinges where before there were none. But what is there to do? The ghost was hungry and he was an enticing buffet. He stretches, hearing the cracking of many knuckles and joints. A physically older, and emotionally wiser Zach rejoins the party.
Sep 22, 2024 7:35 pm
The elf listened to Thrudmarr’s analysis and nodded. She didn’t share what she thought about the notion of stopping at any cave entrances to eat. She looked to the sky to jauge how much daylight remained: she feared it might be tricky walking up those sinuous paths at dusk, or later.

"We must move," is all she volunteered.
Sep 23, 2024 6:27 am
Vasco had washed his face in the waters of the river to refresh himself as he was feeling older than usual. Once he recovered from the traumatic experience, he turned to the statue of Arden while listening to the others. "Are we taking the winding path on the right side of Arden's statue? It seems to go all the way up."
Sep 23, 2024 8:15 am
The elf nods. That is the path she would have taken as well.
Sep 23, 2024 12:38 pm
Let’s get moving; I ache.
Sep 23, 2024 2:43 pm
As suggested by Thrud, the switchbacked path that snakes up the cliff face between the two colossal statues is indeed the only obvious route to the plateau at the top of the falls.

Nevertheless, now that the prospect of ascent is an immediate reality, the endeavour is somewhat terrifying. Grim’s expert eye for stonework suggests that in its heyday, this path would have been quite a feat of construction … an excavated ramp, wide enough for two carts to pass, covered with large, mortared-together flagstones. However, today those flagstones are broken, rutted, and in places quite dangerous looking. Furthermore, sections of the path have eroded or fallen away, narrowing it to little more than 5’ in places. The unevenness of the surface, the restricted width, the slick layer of moisture from the falls, as well as the disorientation created by the all-pervasive mist and thunderous noise from the waterfall, all suggest that the ascent will be both hazardous and physically demanding.

I’ll assume, unless you tell me differently, that you’ll be adopting your "single file" marching order. Please let me know if there are any other specific arrangements you want to make for the ascent.

Grim lends kind dwarven assistance to tying makeshift lines of safety.
Well now, I’m gonna suggest we put strong ones in front, Billie in the middle, n’ at least one more strong one in the rear. Just in case we need someone to catch folks falling backwards.
Sep 23, 2024 4:15 pm
Put me where you want me; I do not care. Zacharias seems to have developed a bad case of apathy, given that a significant portion of his prime years were stolen by the ghost. I have fifty feet of silk rope we can use as well, if we need. It's not like I will need it for much longer, Zach says, pointing to his gray hairs.

Let me make a suggestion. Mules are very sure footed. Perhaps we let Billie go first. He can suss out safe footholds instinctively. We can use one rope to rope all of us together and then use another to doubly rope Billie to the two or three front people. Jacky, if we do this, I recommend you be near the front as well if Billie needs calming.
Sep 23, 2024 5:32 pm
"An excellent plan, Zacharias."

The elf assisted in tying and securing the rope to herself and the others. She was generally sure-footed, but she wouldn’t mind being secured by her companions.

The Long Stair
It takes you a turn to organise yourselves and rope-up before you begin the ascent. The climb is, predictably, hard going. As much as the incline, it’s the incessant need to concentrate on your footing and the ever-increasing height of the unguarded drop to your right that makes the journey particularly draining. However, your preparations were well made and it's only the relatively clumsy Jacky who has to be rescued from falling by his co-roped colleagues on a couple of occasions.

You complete the first two legs of the climb, up to the second switchback, in 1 hour and 40 minutes. At this point, you are roughly halfway up the 1,500’-tall cliff face, close to Arden’s left shoulder. There is an entrance into the cliff face here - a neatly excavated portal in the rock without decoration or ornamentation.

Do you wish to investigate the opening (or anything else), or continue with the climb?

Ellagel worried that if they stopped here, they would not make it to the top before dark. She had hoped they would be able to see more from higher ground. Also, unlike the tower, if they were forced to retreat from some man-eating troll or demon possessed monstrosity, they would be in a very perilous position on the cliff-side.

"Ooh, dark hole might have shiny things inside. Treasure maybe?" His eyes light up briefly, but then he frowns. "But last hole had angry ghost. Hmmm."

He turns to Ella and Zacharias, then nods in response to their suggestion to keep going up. "Ella lady and Old Zach say go up. They smart. Thrudmarr follow." He points towards the top of the cliff. "We climb more. Find safe place before sun sleeps."

He gives a longing look at the entrance and adds, "Maybe come back later. When we have big magic stick to poke angry ghosts."
OOC:
Wouldn't mind checking it out, but I'll go with what sounds like the majority rule. If we're heading for the pyramid, here's the rumors we have about it:

"The old Pyramid of Thoth is the most accessible - and safest - means of entering the Halls of Arden Vul. The long staircase through the pyramid that leads to the first dungeon level is worn with age and covered with layers of graffiti; some of that graffiti is really useful!"

"A psychotic halfling thug named Plummie, Plumit, or Plum-something has taken over the top level, just under the pyramid. He won't let anyone pass unless they buy an 'exploration license'. I'd pay up, because his goons are armed with potent magic wands."

"Many of the most ardent devotees of Thoth, known as Thoth's Beloved, were buried in a set of catacombs located just under the Pyramid. They are guarded by the power of Thoth himself, which has prevented all intruders from entering the catacombs."

Jacky finds his feet still wobbly as the group halts before the hole in the cliff wall. What an odd sensation that is! While the others chat, he sits down for a moment to admire the view, trying to spot the place they came from in the far distance.

"Well, what are the odds we'll bump into two ghosts in one afternoon?" the halfling says once he's mostly steady again. "Let's just have a quick peek inside. We'll leave any trap doors alone," he promises Ella.
Sep 26, 2024 2:13 pm
C'mon ... help your poor GM out here ... what's the party decision?

Vasco, Grim, Jacky and Thrud favour checking-out the entrance. Zach and Ella would prefer to skip it and press on up the cliff face.

Billie doesn't care either way.

Ellagel shrugged. She obviously wasn’t going to stop anyone willing to investigate the entrance, but she did not appear to consider it a wise strategy.

It takes a turn for Grim, Jacky, Thrud and Vasco to untie themselves from the rope and for Vasco to declare the entrance trap-free and quiet (although the roar of the waterfall makes it difficult to hear any other sounds).

Thrud relights his lantern (I will assume) and you enter the opening in the cliff face. It leads to a low (8’ tall) square chamber, approximately 30’ x 30’. It has been neatly excavated from the rock (i.e. it is clearly not a natural cave) and it is a single large space without any interior subdivisions, furnishings, or other visible exits.

The only features you can see are a fire circle and a neatly stacked pile of firewood.

"Someone else's hidey hole!" Jacky remarks, raising his voice to be heard over the crashing rapids. "Maybe they won't mind company if we come back later!"

Curiosity satisfied, he rejoins Ella and Zach on the path up the cliffs.

Grim approaches the fire pit, and then investigates the immediate area for useful items.

Ella observed the chamber from the entrance, now able to see the enclosed area thanks to Thrud's lamp. She almost felt like walking in, if only to escape the constant spray from the long waterfall. But she kept observing from outside, focused particularly on Grimidek's movement and explorations.Should anything jump at the dwarf, she would try to hit it with an elegantly made arrow before anything bad could happen to the dwarf.

Zach sits down and leans against Billie, waiting for the inevitable screams.

Vasco looked around the cave like place observing everything in detail. He tried to notice if there was any tools lying around the fire circle as those chopped wood surely needed some tools to cut. He also searched for any makeshift bed or resting place in order to find out more about the inhabitant of this cave.
OOC:
Are there any foot prints? Tracks? Even the size of the bed can give an impression of what sort of creature inhabited this place.

Grim roots around in the fire pit, but there’s nothing of interest amongst the ashes.

Vasco - it would be a bit misleading to describe this as a "cave". Although it is a hole within the cliff face, it has clearly been excavated with skill and precision. The walls, floor and ceiling are all smooth and square, and it is perfectly dry and habitable. The only footprints on the stone floor are those from your damp boots. But, aside from the fire pit and the wood, there is literally nothing else within the chamber as far as you can see. There’s nothing to suggest that someone or something is living here on a regular, or even semi-regular, basis.

Grim shakes his dwarven head.
Nothing fer ta see r’ do, here. Seems some stone-minded craftspeople musta’ carved out a shelter. Nicely done, too, I must say.
Shall we move on, friends? Da climb won’t be doin’ its OWN self!

"Do you think it's dwarvish work? I mean, can you tell?" Jacky inquires to Grim. "It is awfully tidy!"

It doesn't look dwarven to Grim. More likely Archontean.
Sep 28, 2024 4:54 pm
Nay, Jacky. No dwarf under de mountain would’ve done dis kinda work. It’s nicely done, but it’s not dwarven done. Certainly made by humankin, Archontean, fer ta be per-cise!

Thrudmarr looks around the smooth, empty chamber with disappointment. "No treasure," he says with a sigh. "No ghosts either. Just big empty box in mountain. Maybe remember later for if we need hidey-hole camp."
OOC:
If there's nothing else to be found here, I assume we will re-tie and keep heading up.

"Ah, don't be so glum, my tall friend," Jacky slaps the sighing Thrud's shoulder. "I'm sure we'll have our hands filled with shiny things before the week is done!"
OOC:
Same marching order as before and up the slope sounds good to me.

Vasco came out of the chamber entrance and took his designated position among everyone else while tying up the rope to secure himself. At least this chamber was not some dangerous area housing a spectre. Still his mind lingered on the question about who inhabited the chamber.

Tie up, get moving, night will fall soon.

The Long Stair
It takes a turn to rope up again and you begin the next stage of the ascent. This brings you a further 150’ higher, towards the shoulder of Vul, in a little over half an hour. The climb becomes a little easier, mainly because the flagstones are dryer and less slippery.

At the next switchback, you come across another opening in the cliff face. It looks like a stone door originally sealed this entrance, but this has been smashed and lies in shards. Other than a single passage leading into the cliff, it’s too dark to see what may lie inside. However, it is noticeable that the floor of this passage is littered with bits of trash (a broken canteen, some scraps of leather, etc.).

Zach shrugs and turns to the group Gumball, Jaxon, another hole in which to stick our noses?
Sep 30, 2024 3:35 pm
Grim waddled to the cliff side entrance. But not before really giving jazz to ol’ Zach lol!
Blast it, meh name ain’t Gumball, it’s Grimidek. Whatrya, daft?
Eventually regaining dwarven composure, our priestly fellow steps inside, stoops low and examines the floor for any sign of recent activity herein!

"The path is easier now, let us make speed while we dare, under sunlight rather than the stars," Ellagel spoke, looking at the cliff's edge above them. She seemed once more inclined to reach the top, rather than to explore the opening.
OOC:
And I am, of course, totally fine if you all prefer to head into this second passage and explore for a bit. Ella will follow, though she does consider that it is less profitable to do so.

"Let's head up top before dark," Jacky says in echo of the elf. "I'd rather spend the night with a roof over my head than the ceiling of a cave while I still can."

"Ella lady and Jacky right," Thrudd says, sounding a bit disappointed. "Sun getting tired. We find safe place up top before dark. Thrudmarr ready. We go up now, find good sleeping place."
OOC:
Apologies for the post delay, I was unable to connect to the site yesterday for some reason.

Upper Outpost
Grimidek’s infravision allows him to investigate the opening. He sees a 20’ long entrance passage that leads to a small H-shaped layout with two distinct "arms" to the left and right. Both arms are choked with thick, ropey cobwebs. Again, these chambers have been excavated from the rock with skill and precision.

From Grim’s cursory glance, there are no signs of any current inhabitants or recent activity.

It sounds like most party members want to press on towards the plateau at the top of the cliff. I will assume this is your course of action in tomorrow’s post, unless you tell me otherwise.

Grim rises from cavernous ground. At a mere four feet tall, he hasn’t far to go!
Well, nuthin’ a’ interest ‘ere, den. I ‘spose best we be movin’ on n’ up!

Vasco licked his lips at the sight of another entrance but when he heard everyone else he remained silent. It was wise to complete the climb before sunset and they could always come back and check it later. He nodded to others and followed them up.
Oct 2, 2024 1:50 pm
Ella took place in the ascending column. The sight of so many webs in the nearby passage made her nervous, and as the party resumed its ascension, the elf kept looking back regularly: she had heard more than one elven tale about the endless appetites of giant spiders, and so vigilance was a high priority here.
OOC:
I don’t think this would have any mechanical effect; just saying Ellagel recalled stories of mythical Shelob-like foes elven parents recounted to their children, and that these reminiscences put her on high alert…

Zach sighed as once again, the party emerged empty-handed from their explorations and tied themselves up behind him and Billie. At least no screaming ghosts this time, he thought, as he resumed trudging up the path.

The remainder of the ascent is arduous but uneventful. You eventually complete the exhausting and stressful journey a little before 6 pm.

And with that, we will draw this opening chapter to a close, and start a new thread.
