Chapter 2 - Set, The City of Gods

SET, CITY OF GODS - 891 AF

You set sail on the ship Uncommon Courage the following morning. The one-eyed halfling captain, whose name you learn is Touthan Roaves, runs a crew of twenty and ferries almost the same amount of passengers, mostly folks on pilgrimage. The journey takes three days is mostly uneventful. Mostly. On the second night, just before dawn, a few dozen miles from Set, the ocean is aglow with a green radiance deep beneath the waters. It causes a commotion among the sailors who mutter oaths and speculate on its origin. Most take it as an unfortunate omen and make signs to ward off evil. Some even swear to have seen a dark shape as long as the ship pass below, momentarily blotting out a large portion of the glow. But after a few moments the ship has moved passed and is in dark waters once more.

The city of Set is within sight a few hours after dawn of the third morning. The entire city is surrounded by walls which also divide the city into districts. A few sights soar above the walls: several towers in the north of white, black, and red; four large manor houses or temples in the west; and a large square structure of bricks just north of the docks. The docks district itself is not very large but has several notable features among its many long, low warehouses. A grey stone keep sits high on a hill overlooking the bay in the eat. The west side houses a temple of dark grey brick with red mortar that gives off a sinister air. And the most noticeable to anyone approaching is the large pitch black galleon. Everything, from wood to sails to rope, is pitch black and looks as new as if it were just completed yesterday. Even the waters around the ship is free of the seaweed that chokes the rest of the bay. Not even a single white smear of bird droppings mars it.

Captain Roaves stands on deck, one foot on the railing, smoking a pipe as his ship sails into the docks.

Sep 16, 2024 12:50 pm
The Halfling knew better than to harangue the weary dwarf. For that, the dwarf gives him a nod and murmurs:

"Aye, a fine job!" as he shimmies off the ship and disembarks.

Hargrac’s stomach lurches as the dwarf makes landfall. His knees almost buckle underneath him, as he gets his ground-legs back!

"I don’t care how we do it, but we’re traveling in luxury when we leave this place. My arse is still sore from that horse and now my legs have gone funny." he complains, massaging solidity back into his stocky legs.
Sep 16, 2024 2:23 pm
Theodore has taken to life at sea, and tried to pick up some of the trade. Maybe get a ship's ticket and work his way to their next destination should the need to save some coin be needed.

"Should we look into obtaining a horse and carriage?" he asks Hargrac. "Never stolen a horse before. About time they got a reason to update my wanted posters."
Sep 16, 2024 3:19 pm
Mortemiar stood on the deck eying the harbour and the city. Set, the magnificent place where you are given the freedom to choose whatever higher power you believe in. Well whatever everyone thinks, death was a certainty, a finality that you cannot escape. Then again there are foul corrupting magic to prolong the undeath, a blasphemy to the sacred cycle charted by Father Death himself. He was sent here to visit the temples and check on his superior solemn brothers and sisters. Every city have cemeteries that needed proper maintenance and vigil. Beside he was still an acolyte in who has just completed his training. He needed more knowledge and perspective. Taking out and wearing his skullmask, Mortemiar paid the due to the ship captain and disembarked the ship hoping to explore the city and find the temples of Solemn Brotherhood.
Sep 17, 2024 2:10 am
Fingas snort-laughs at Theodore 's joke, but turns the conversation to what their real purpose here is. "The prophecy says we have to find an aqueous God with a profaned altar. I have a feeling it will reveal itself to us, bloodily, before long. Also, we might have to be on the watch for sea creatures rising up. Let's ask around, shall we? After a good stiff drink."

The halfling captains blows a smoke ring as everyone disembarks. As soon as you touch land he calls out, "Best hire yourselves an unspoken for a guide. There are so many gods, sacred temples, hell even sacred lampposts, you'll likely offend a dozen faiths before you've walked three blocks. Only those in the escort of an unspoken will get you anywhere unmolested."
Sep 17, 2024 2:34 pm
Mortemiar turned to the group as he heard the word 'god' while they were talking. They were probably group of pilgrims that has come to Set. He proceeded and politely asked, "Pardon my intrusion, I heard you were talking about god. Are you perhaps on pilgrimage here like everyone else? I am also looking for my religious brothers. Maybe we can make to the city together?"
Sep 18, 2024 8:18 am
"Well, as long as you pay for your share of the guide," Theodore says. "The more the merrier."
Sep 18, 2024 11:41 am
"An Unspoken…" Hargrac considers, turning the thing over in his mind. He’d never met a manling that didn’t love the sound of his own voice. One that didn’t speak all that much, if at all, sounded alright to the sea-weary dwarf!

Hargrac squints up at the new arrival, trying to get a feel for what lay beneath the mask. He hadn’t taken much note of anyone else on the ship. Looking down at the planks had done something to steady his stomach. Not much, mind… but something.

"Pardon the intrusion…" Hargrac says, with a grunting laugh. "A soft spoken manling! Aye, aye! Lead on!" he says, laughing some more.

Just what they needed to sand off the rough edges of this group…

Scatteted around the docks are a few dozen men and women of all ages dressed in black robes festooned with all manner of pins, badges, ribbons, and fetishes. You recognize symbols for Astrid, Father Death, the Seer, and many more. You also see an equal number you don't recognize at all, most likely very small cults and gods who haven't been worshipped in centuries outside of this city. Many of these people lead small groups of two to five people like a tour guide, others wander freely and approach people offering their services. These are clearly the unspoken. At least three are nearby your ship's dock.
Sep 19, 2024 9:20 am
"Alright, manling! You’re up! Put those soft words to good use and get us a decent price!" Hargrac requests of the newcomer!
Sep 19, 2024 11:45 am
Mortemiar looked at the dwarf wondering if this was some sort of test. His eyebrows furrowed but within the skull mask it was probably not visible. He looked around the group of odd devotes and chose one who was clearly a follower of Father Death. This would make his life easier as it was 'knock two birds with one stone' kind of deal. He approached one devotee and said, "Greetings Solemn initiate. I am brother Mortemiar Holmes from the Solemn Brotherhood. May Father Death watch over your soul and guide you through death. May our vigil be strong lest some lose their ways in their path through the eternal cycle. May our fealty to Him give us sight to correct the cycle from the perils of blasphemous. I and some of my associate has just arrived in the City of Gods. Can you guide us through this city as neither I nor them has set foot on this city before."

The words were spoken with a distinct confidence as being a member of the Solemn Brotherhood, he expected this as a customary service that he was entitled to. But he added a smile to emphasize that he wanted his associates to be treated in the same way. Though, he had no idea how the Brotherhood operated in Set, he waited to see the outcome.

The unspoken whom Mortemier approached looks androgynous but chuckles in a feminine voice. "I thank you for the blessing, but I am not a member of your order. Or any order. We unspoken are, by law, unspoken for by any gods or goddesses. We are neutral guides through the city. We may not enter the temples of any faith, but in compensation we may traverse the city without harassment or causing actionable offense to any faith. Our services are hired by the day for a flat fee of seven silver shillings, non-negtionable. Would you like my services?"
Sep 20, 2024 1:26 am
Are they all going to be so talkative?… Hargrac thought to himself.

When he hears mention of the price being non-negotiable, he grunts to those not conducting business:

"They all say that! Let’s see if this lad can haggle!"
Sep 20, 2024 2:06 am
Fingas tried to stay hidden in the back. This is a task for the tall folk to handle. He knows how poorly his kind is treated.
Sep 20, 2024 5:40 am
Mortemiar raised his eyebrows when he heard about the hefty price, "Well, I wasn't aware that touring the city with the unspoken was such a costly affair. After just completing such a voyage, I find myself lacking with funds to procure your service. You have every right to decline me as you just said that the price is non-negotiable, but hear me out. Death is a silent touch of fate, uncaring and uncompromising. You see, my order is solely responsible for helping with the funerary process of one's demise. I cannot offer you a price, but I will assure you that in our order, should you require any aid, baring any outrageous demand, it would be provided to you. I will personally handle it with the higher clergy when the time comes. Won't that be an amicable compensation for showing us around the city? Surely, you can make one exception?"
OOC:
I know it sound outrageous, but instead of paying, I want them to provide the service at free of cost in exchange of an exclusive service from Father Death temple. Beside, Mortemiar doesn't even have 7 silvers. I want to persuade this unspoken. Ahh! I am back with sweet sweet rolls. Oh! How I have missed rolling low in SotDL games!

"Poor buggers probably get propositions like that five times a day!" Hargrac mutters to the others, shaking his head at the sorry bargaining at play.

He had expected the man to try for five gold, maybe four. To give the lad no gold for a day’s work wouldn’t be right! The dwarf clears his throat, trying to get their new companion’s attention.

He then goes about fishing some silver out of his own purse!

OOC:
Lol! It was a creative attempt. Sadly they are basically government employees and are literally legally bound to be neutral and may not accept any offers from any faith to remain neutral. Their fee is dictated by the government so it would be like trying to haggle down the cost of a passport. Don't worry, the others have plenty of money relatively speaking from their last adventure.
GM
The unspoken coughs awkwardly. "It is a most generous offer but I am afraid we are legally forbidden from accepting anything except coin. Favors are seen as, well, favoritism potentially, and jeopardizes our neutrality. All faiths are equal in the marketplace of cold hard coins. I can understand if you lack the funds, it happens quite often that people must brave the city unescorted. But it seems your friend may be able to help you with payment...?" she says, looking at Hargrac fishing in a money pouch.
Sep 20, 2024 10:02 am
Theodore stands back in silence and considers a five finger discount of stealing back the money for Hargrac. He eventually decide not to, at least for the moment. It would be in bad taste should it be discovered.

Instead he walk over to the death priest. "I hope you have the funds to pay us back your share. I'm hoping I won't need your services for many years yet."
Sep 20, 2024 12:51 pm
Mortemiar nodded, "Ofcource; I thank you all for your generosity. I think I will be able to get you the money back once I get more accustomed with Set and the temples of our brotherhood. As for my services, I am not just only a mortician. So, there are otherways I can aid you if the need arise."
Sep 21, 2024 2:56 pm
Fingas' assessment of the situation was spot on. Not a single one of them even seemed to notice the goblin, much less even mention that he was there. Keeping quiet, he tags along.
OOC:
I've been having some really rough mental health for the past month or so. I'm not planning on dropping out of this game, but I may not be as active as I would normally be - or rather, I won't be trying to take the lead for a while. I will try to input as needed, but for now I just need to quietly follow along.
Sep 22, 2024 3:05 am
"Aye, aye! We’ll put you down for the seventh silver! We’ll get the rest! Call it a welcome gift!" the dwarf says, paying up the silver and assuming it will get back to him later from the goblin and the newcomer.
OOC:
Take your time, Book! Take it easy!
Sep 22, 2024 4:52 am
OOC:
No worries Book, take any time you need.
GM
The unspoken bows as she receives the payment. "Many thanks. Now, welcome to Set. How may I help you? Feel free to ask any questions for we unspoken also serve as tour guides as well. Might as well get your money's worth, right?" she smiles under her cropped brown hair.

"Spose you’ve heard about the Festival of the Maiden in the Moon and all that mess!" Hargrac says, waiting for the answer.

"Only we’re here on account of that! Don’t suppose you can give us the answers we seek, so we can go and get back on that piddling ship?"
Sep 23, 2024 1:01 pm
GM
...No, I have not heard. Where was this festival held?...Oh, I see. We don't get too many people from such...rural communities. But there was a similar situation here. All of the Sisters of the Moon vanished one night. Some tell stories similar to yours. We thought it was something only to do with this temple. If it is indeed happening all over Rûl..." she rubs her chin in concerned thought. "Well, it wouldn't be good is all I can say."
Sep 24, 2024 1:51 am
"No, I suppose it wouldn’t…" Hargrac says, agreeing with the obvious.

Seven silvers for that…

"Maybe you might show us to the Sisters’ temple. Only go a little slower, would you? I’m still getting my legs back!"
Sep 24, 2024 4:59 am
Mortemiar arched an eyebrow when he heard about Maiden of the Moon being mentioned. "What is this sisters of the moon you are talking about? Did something happen to the order?"
Sep 24, 2024 12:59 pm
"They all vanished," Fingas answers. "Every last one of those cunts. And we're trying to find out why. I've got a lot of my people back home who want to know what happened, and I'm going to find out. When they left, they spoke a prophecy, and that's what guides us."
OOC:
Fingas can show you the prophecy, he has it written down. You can read it in the "notes" spoiler at the top of my character sheet.
Sep 24, 2024 1:46 pm
The unspoken smiles. "That is a common ailment among those newly arrived by ship. I am sorry to say the temple you seek is on the opposite side of the city, in the Seven Towers district. Maybe a little exercise is the medicine you need? My name is Enimpi, by the way. I suppose we should be heading off then." She gives a nod once it seems everyone is ready and turns around with a swirl of her black robes and walks off.

The city is well divided but chaos within it. One can find black-frocked cultists of the New God arguing with peddlers of small gods on a street corner, while a hoary old druid wanders past, followed by a veritable menagerie of animals large and small. Devil worshipers brazenly advertise their devotion, while mad cultists of alien powers shriek and gibber from the rooftops, hoping to call forth their masters from the darkness between the stars. Everywhere you pass are shrines, offerings, masses, processions, and religious artworks. Enimpi is a wonderful guide and fills you in on each point of interest, pointing out historic buildings, telling dark and tragic tales behind a building here or statue there. But most importantly she navigates unmolested you through swarms of proselytizers, paraphernalia hawkers, hucksters, and street urchins.

As you depart the Seawatch district she points out All-Faiths Keep, which is the headquarters of the cities court of law and dungeons; Hall of the All-Father, a grey-and-red temple to Grimnir led by the jotun Snorri Gurdenson; and The Black Ship, a possibly abandoned galleon which has been docked for over a century after its captain, Sora Redhead, paid ten thousand gold crowns to secure that spot until she returned, which she and her crew never did.

Making your way north through the eastern portion of the city you pass through into Red Roofs, the middle-class and most "normal" district in the city, so named for the uniform red tiles that cover the rooftops of the buildings here. Red Roofs is a collection of residential houses and commercial storefronts. Pamela's Coffee House and the Bank are the most notable features in this otherwise unremarkable section.

Enimpi leads you through another large gateway in the stone wall into the Garden district. Your guide explains this used to be where the richest of Set lived, but eventually abandoned it as the "riffraff" began to populate the city. It has since been converted into the largest park in the Nine Cities, solely tended by priests of the Old Faith. Points of interest here are the Tree of the High One, a 75-foot tall black willow tree, and Ten Groves Point, a dozen standing stones in a circle surrounding a bronze spear driven point-first into the earth. Enimpi tells you of the legend that it was supposedly wielded by Gomrough Strongarm and the spear is called Bitterness. It is said to be awaiting the one worthy enough to wield it to pull it free, but none have yet succeeded.

And beyond the final gateway is your destination, Seven Towers.
OOC:
This is already a long post so I'll let you guys ask any questions or banter among yourselves for a bit.
Sep 24, 2024 7:58 pm
Mortemiar followed the party and Enimpi as they walked through the myriad districts and promenade of Set, eying the various buildings and locales as well the inhabitants and their bizarre cults. Without knowing he abruptly spoke out, "Fascinating, as a follower of the Old faith, I have never seen such a chaotic assemblage of cults and religions. I guess it is called City of the Gods afterall. So, how is the more eccentric cults handled? (he said eying the devil and alien worshippers) Are there any problems that arise from...I guess...conflict of notions?"

He tried to keep note of any Father Death temples which he planned to visit after the tour completion. "So, this situation regarding the sisterhood of Moon seems troubling. Have you all looked into it?"
Sep 25, 2024 7:55 am
"We found a book," Theodore says with a shrug. "Don't know how it'll help. Only time a book helped me, I threw it at a constable running after me. Ask the goblin. He's the brain of the operation."
Sep 25, 2024 10:10 am
Hargrac’s brow furrows and his mouth creases at the mention of those cunts. He had grown quite fond of the Sister he had known; seeing as how she had pulled him from orcish slave pits along with her armed men!

Hargraf is about to ask what the people of this city classed as food, when mention of the spear is made. As the others go about discussing the facts of the case, he mutters aloud to himself:

"Bet I could pull the thing free!"

It’s a boast and a challenge in one!
Sep 25, 2024 11:53 am
GM
Enimpi nods at Mortemiar's question. "This city is built on conflict. But hostility towards any religion is strictly forbidden. Grudging tolerance is the most common sentiment in Set. Not just because of the religions, although that's a large part, but also being the largest city in the Nine Cities, not everyone will get along. Any religions with a problem are free to speak their minds or bring any grievances to the autarch and the council of religious leaders, but that's all."

At Hargrac's boast, Enimpi covers her mouth and gives a small laugh. "Why not? I'm sure you're as worthy as any other." She looks up at the weapon once wielded by a jotun of antiquity that is twice as tall as Hargrac is and smiles wider. "I'm sure we can all take a moment to watch."
Sep 25, 2024 11:59 am
"No need to stop walking! I’ll have it out in a second, watch!" he boasts, as he settles in to wrestle the thing up and out of its place!

When Hargrac finally lets go of the spear, a vision fills his mind. He sees a jotun, no less than ten feet tall, wielding the spear and slaughtering enemies most foul. The spear seems to whisper to him, "Prove yourself." Hargrac is filled with a certainty that he was not rejected by the spear forevermore, but merely must prove himself worthy of such a weapon. A conviction settles on his mind that he must purchase a spear, a regular spear of unremarkable quality, and use it to slay a mighty foe. For it is the wielder who makes the weapon, not the other way around.

Hargrac keeps the odd whispers to himself. He didn’t need any more fun made at his expense, and this wasn’t the most welcoming of groups that he had thrown in it!

Still, he keeps the idea in his mind, and ushers for the Unspoken to go on!

"Most likely a trick! Surprised there’s no one here charging a coin to have a go!" he says, brushing the whole event off as some carnival gag!

Enimpi hides a chuckle behind her hand, but nods and continues on. You pass through the huge arch into the northernmost section of Set, Seven Towers. Surprisingly, the most notable features are seven towers, the tallest structures in Set.

"The two white towers that mark the eastern and western boundaries of Seven Towers pre-date the cities founding. No one knows their origin but the most popular conjecture is that they were constructed by faeries. Others think it was the followers of a forgotten god. The rest were built in the last five hundred years. The red tower is the most recent and was a vanity project for then-autarch Amariss the Unready about a century ago. It's currently run by members of a small cult to the Sky God. I don't recommend getting close to that tower; the members never leave their post and dump their...er, waste from the top of the tower."

Enimpi continues deeper into the city, pointing out various other features. "Here is Saint Roland's Cathedral to the New God," she points to a large modern temple of white marble in an angular architectural style.

"Here is the area dedicated to the Old Faiths," she points to a small grove dotted with various smaller shrines and temples. Mortemiar sees a temple the size of a barn made from basalt that is clearly a temple to Father Death.

"And here is the Temple of the Violet Eye," the unspoken says, gesturing at what was once an inn converted into a religious meeting house. It is decorated all in purple. "They are the most secretive cult in Set and no one except members know what they believe in or even which god they worship."

"And here's the last stop, Giant Town." Sprawling in front of you is a district of Seven Towers that occupies nearly a third of the area, mostly because of the size of the buildings. It is an entire enclave of jotuns. Every building is jotun-sized, roughly half again as large as normal human buildings. They are mostly longhouses for habitation, but there are several stores, a blacksmith, and a tavern just for jotun.

Right outside the demarcation of Giant Town is the Temple of the Moon Goddess. The temple is beautifully carved from a bluish-green stone, adorned with fluted columns and bas-reliefs depicting the phases of the moon and constellations. It seems abandoned except for a small group of jotun who seem to be in an argument with several humans in black hooded robes armed with scourges and several sets of manacles dangling from chain belts. "Huh, that's strange. Those are a few members of the All-Faiths Company. The city guard," she adds. "I wonder what's going on..."
Oct 2, 2024 3:06 am
Hargrac, had he been in a boastful mood after pulling free the spear, might have made a comment about the Unspoken having no information on a sect within the city.

Ain’t that why we’re paying you?…

But then they come across the temple they had been seeking! He grumbles, and notes the troubled tone in the Unspoken’s voice.

"Right! Best we go and ask! You can mention it next time you’re in the area!" he says, with a joking tone. He’d just have easily asked for a silver back for the service he was about to do for the Unspoken and her trade.

"Right! Right! What’s all this?" he booms, wading into the scene with Dwarven bullheaded-ness.
Oct 2, 2024 9:06 am
Mortemiar listened to the unspoken guide Enimpi, sometimes nodding and sometimes thinking in deep contemplation. When they entered the grove of old faith, his eyed got drawn towards the Father Death temple. He almost felt like leaving the group as his gaze lingered on but instead he made a sign of Father Death and followed the party.

The mystery of temple of Moon was bugging him and since the two faiths was somewhat related, he choose to follow the party and look into the matter. At the sight of gathering in the front of the temple he raised his eyebrows, "Something seems to be brewing here. Especially when the city guard is involved." He followed Hargrac the dwarf as he barged into the gathering, trying to listen to any conversation they were doing.
Oct 2, 2024 12:19 pm
Theodore has no love for city guards any place. And he stays in the background, but follows Hargrac and Mortemiar, content to let them do the talking. A boisterous dwarf would be enough distraction that he'd blend in and be forgotten about.

GM
Both groups of guards and jotun stop talking and stare at the dwarf with surprise and annoyance. An awkward silence draws out for several seconds. Enimpi shrinks back behind the two taller party members, going pale.

Eventually one of the guards speaks up, the tallest and clearly the leader. "What's going on here is a private conversation between city officials and members of our community. What's not going on here is an open forum for, I will guess, visitors to come and stick their bulbous noses into private affairs. Be thankful I am forgiving of the uninitiated and will overlook the blundering of newcomers." He looks to where Enimpi is trying to hide as best she can. "I'm sure your guide will explain your mistake to you later."

The tall guard turns back to the small group of jotun. "Well, it seems the interruption is perhaps a sign from the gods that our conversation had run its course anyway. Regardless of your feelings, the Council of Faith has spoken and your requests have been denied. Good day." The man turns on his heel and walks away, the other members of the guard following behind. They don't even look in your direction as they walk away. The small group of jotun are grumbling and shaking their heads in frustration.
Oct 6, 2024 1:27 pm
Mortemiar adjusted his skull facemask and took a deep breath, exhaling slowly in a sigh. He turned to the Jotuns, "Looks like we won't get any information from the city guards, but if you are willing to enlighten us, we can listen to your side of the story. That is ofcourse if you have no issue sharing it with us. We wouldn't want to offend any established norms and customs in any way."
Oct 7, 2024 6:08 am
"Bulbous?!" Hargrac laughs after the man, in a threatening sort of way!

I’ll put my bulbous fist around your little neck… the dwarf thinks, itching to have the insult repaid almost immediately! The dwarf makes himself big, and proud looking. This little manling wouldn’t put the fright into a mouse, never mind a dwarf.

"Be thankful I am forgiving…" the dwarf starts, mimicking the guards words. "… or I’d explain your mistake here and now." he shouts down the street, meaning not to use words during the explanation!

As they've walked through the streets have Theodore seen any stray cats? Or is there little animals. No use sneaking away and turning into a cat if a cat is out of place.
OOC:
Sure, cats and rats are common in big cities so you've seen some here and there.

Theodore will use the fact that everyone is paying attention to Hargrac, and sneak off into an alley and once he's confident he has no eyes on him, he'll change shape to his feline form.

One of the jotun, presumably the leader who was speaking with the city guard, shakes his head. He is almost nine feet tall with long black hair in braids, a beard strung with engraved bone clasps, and rune tattoos on his blue skin.

"No offense. I will tell, but you cannot help. Our problem lies with the Council of Faith. We are but a few followers of Oceanus. He is god of the seas. Many have forgotten him and his worshippers are few. But in Set, all faiths are welcome. So we thought. We have saved money for many years to buy some land in Seawatch and build a temple there. But the Council has denied our petition with no explanation. Recently the priestesses of the moon goddess have all disappeared. Their temple sits empty. So we changed our petition to buy that temple and dedicate it to Oceanus. Again we were denied. This is what you saw. Again no reason. This cannot be coincidence."

Once in cat form, he'll want to explore the temple of the moon goddess without the danger of causing offense or be seen as a trespasser.
Oct 9, 2024 8:10 am
Hargrac grunts as the guards say nothing. He is about to make a glib comment about the god of the sea and how weary the dwarf was from having spent so much time with him over the past few days.

It was a good thing they had the new soft-spoken human with them to smooth things over!

Enimpi seems very uncomfortable when Hargrac shouts after the departing guards and breathes and audible sigh of relief when they don't respond. "Be very careful here. The guards are experts at the rules and laws of every religion and can find any offense as a pretext to haul you off to the dungeon." She turns to the jotun. "I have heard a little about this and I'm sorry for your troubles. It is very unlike the Council to rule without any reason."

Theodore strides up the aisle, with no care in the world. He wants to take a closer look at the dais. So he'll jump up on it and sniff about the robes. See if there's anything hidden by the piles.
Oct 9, 2024 11:22 am
"The only thing city guards are expert at is playing with themselves." Hargrac replies, still letting some of the anger out in his words.

It was the truth. He doubted there was a guard on the continent expert in anything, never mind every faith under the sun.
Oct 9, 2024 1:07 pm
Mortemiar turned to the dwarf and looked around. "Where did the other man go? I think I remember he was present just moments before. Anyway, we can go and take a look inside the Moon temples. Maybe we can find something. I would also like to visit my Solemn order, you can come too."
Oct 11, 2024 3:16 am
"I wouldn’t want to intrude…" Hargrac says awkwardly, though he considers it a pretty deft sidestep of the invitation!

"Don’t worry about him! He never goes too far!" the dwarf says, though is careful not to let anything slip on to his face as to what he thinks the other manling might be up to when he slips off!

"Aye, best we go see this temple." he says then, as if to move on from the strange encounter with the Jotun and the guards.

Up close you can see the blue-green stone of the temple is slightly translucent. You think it would light up beautifully when touched by moonlight. A small set of worn steps lead up to the rectangular doorway. Inside is quiet and mostly bare. There are several rows of benches arranged in a V shape, with a central aisle bisecting it and leading to a dais. Stained glass windows in the walls depict phases of the moon and portraits of the Moon Goddess. On the dais are a half dozen robes of the Sisters of the Moon lying in piles. Among one pile you see a cat sniffing at the robes.
Oct 14, 2024 10:23 am
Hargrac looks at the cat, and wondered if its markings marked that of that of his companion! He couldn’t smell the thing from this far away!

"You suppose they’ve been put like that? Or that’s where they fell when the moon priestesses disappeared?" the dwarf asks, as he stalks towards the robes slowly!

"Cat got your tongue, manling?" Hargrac asks, very pleased at his appropriate play on words, given the situation!

"You’d know better than me! You and that pissing goblin, wherever he’s gotten off to!" he says, stopping himself from spitting in the temple!
Oct 15, 2024 11:22 am
Seeing his companions has gained entrance, he feels silly having turned to feline form to sneak in. He thought it would take them longer. He jumps down from the dais and turns back to human form. Giving his companions a wave. "Surprise," he says, mostly to Mortemiar. "I don't know if nine lives is a anathema to your religion."

Mortemiar is visibly taken aback. "You! You are the one, I was asking Hargrac about. You...are...a feline...no, no, wait, a ferren, right? I haven't seen any in my life but I have heard about your people. So, you can turn into cats? As for life and death, I guess Father Death accepts it whenever its the appropriate time. If you live nine more lives, then so be it."

He then turned towards the robes and asked him, "I guess you were here all this time then. Did you find anything noteworthy?"
Oct 15, 2024 2:31 pm
Theodore shrugs. "Not yet," he admits, then he holds up one of the robes. "Though whoever wore this one should have bathed more frequently."
Oct 16, 2024 8:12 am
"Glorious Dead but I wouldn’t want to live nine lives of this." Hargrac grumbles, certain that he wouldn’t have his own one for very much longer!

He was lucky to have it even now, after what those orcs had put him through!

"Nowt much different here than to the last time we saw the priestesses, is there?" he says, a bit puzzled before looking about!

Enimpi speaks up, "You all seem full of surprises," she says, nodding towards Theodore. "You were saying you've seen this before? Some people were gossiping that the priestesses vanished mid-service one night. Some say they turned into moon rays, others into fireflies, and some say they turned invisible," Enimpi shrugs. "Gossip is never consistent, right? But what we do know is that no servants of the Moon Goddess have shown up to claim this place. And in a large city like Set, this real estate likely won't lay empty for long. I'm honestly surprised the followers of Oceanus were denied. It's not like the council to turn down a religious petition that harms no one and solves the problem of a temple with no owners. Either the council already have plans for this temple they don't want to reveal, or someone has a grudge against Oceanus and his followers."
Oct 17, 2024 8:52 am
Mortemiar listened to Enimpi as he walked around the empty temple trying to find something valuable which the owners won't miss. "So, what do we do now? Inquire the council about what is going on with the priestesses of the Moon?
Oct 17, 2024 9:41 am
"Aye!" Hargrac says, agreeing with the plan. Though there is a hint of menace in his saying of the word; as if it was pushed about between gritted teeth.

"Someone wants this place. Maybe they had to get rid of the priestesses to make that happen!"
Oct 18, 2024 6:00 pm
The sound of voices roused Arkemos with a start.

He had only just arrived in the city but could have sworn he was being followed, and had decided to duck into the temple, which he had thought to have been abandoned. Days of maddened traveling on the road, just one step ahead of the assassins of the Moth Sisterhood, had tired him to the bone and though he had intended to rest his eyes for just a few moments before looking for a seedy inn to stay the night, it appeared he had fallen asleep.

But for how long? And who were all these people?

Arkemos peered at them from the shadows. They didn't appear to be Moth Sisterhood assassins, as those black lipped women never made a sound, and had always one breast, the other cut off during their initiation into that vile cult.

Perhaps he had been mistaken earlier about being followed, and had managed to give them the slip on the road after all?

Whatever the case he needed to get his bearings, make some money to be able to get a ship to somewhere farther away, and maybe find some allies along the way

Arkemos slowly moved out from the shadows and into the light, holding up his hands casually. "Well met!" he called out cautiously. "I am Arkemos, a newcomer to this fine city, and looking for some information, or some work if any's to be had."

Enimpi jumps at the sudden appearance of a stranger. "Oh! I didn't know anybody else was in here. Well met, Arkemon. I am Enimpi, an unspoken; a guide through the city. If it's simple information you seek then I can answer some questions. For an unspoken's services, however, is one silver shilling per day. I regret I am already hired for the day unless your answers align with my current clients' goals...?"
Oct 19, 2024 2:09 pm
Mortemiar almost jumped at the voice from the shadows, "Ho there, Arkemos is it? What are you doing in the temple of the Moon? Are you somehow related to these disappearances or have you seen anything weird happening here."
Oct 19, 2024 2:27 pm
Theodore reaches instinctively for his rapier as they are interrupted. Though once the stranger introduces himself, he assumes a more relaxed pose again. "Better than living dolls," he mutters under his breath, but otherwise remains silent for now.
Oct 19, 2024 9:21 pm
Moving slowly out of the shadows Arkemos lowered his hands, sticking his thumbs inside his belt as he stared at the group in front of him.

"Ah, well I am short on money right now as I said. Guess I'll just have to ask your clients' what their current goals are so I know what to ask you for free," he replied to Enimpi with a slight smirk.

Nodding at the others he turned towards the dark clad man who had addressed him with a question and responded, "Disappearances? Really? Is that why there were all these robes strewn about?" He shrugged, his brief expression of surprise replaced with a raised brow of mild curiosity.

Given the intensity of the question Arkemos sensed the group was searching for answers to these supposed disappearances, and saw an opportunity.

"I am not bad at riddles or mysteries, though I admit not exactly a class act at them either. Still, it would not hurt your cause to have a learned mind ponder upon these disappearances, so why don't you tell me everything you know and why exactly you seek to solve them. And has someone you know gone missing, or have you been hired by this temple?"

Recalling the robes Arkemos surmised that something supernatural did occur, which was disturbing considering these had been high ranking members of the temple. He was about to say something when the sound of voices was heard and everyone else moved to hide themselves, one member of the group transforming into a cat to do so!

A Ferran, Arkemos though, having heard of the species, as he moved to discrete himself quickly as well.

Darting back into the shadows from whence he had first emerged, the warlock leaned against the very pillar he had rested against upon arriving in this temple. As the voices moved closer he moved quietly, keeping the pillar between himself and the owners of the voices.

Straining his ears he tried to hear what they were saying.

The two men enter, the sound of grit on the stone floor under their boots loud in the silence of their words. The take a short circuit of the interior, a cursory glance, with one pointing out to the other how he will convert this area or that towards his new temple's decor. There are many references to "the depths", "lightless places", and "aquatic flourishes" between the men.

Luckily none of you are spotted but neither can you get a good glimpse of the two men from your hiding spot, except Theodore whose small form makes him agile and hardly noticeable. One of them is wearing a cowled robe with the hood pulled up, but with the vision of a cat Theodore notices this man looks sickly pale, with bulbous eyes and a flattened nose and fat colorless lips. Theodore also smells ocean brine when he walks close. The other seems to be a city official, dressed in well-cut and moderately expensive clothes. He carries a ledger and has a quill in one hand, making notes while the other speaks. He has a receding hairline and a chunk missing out of the top of one ear.

After their short tour which lasts no more than five minutes the pair sweep out of the temple. "I am looking to start tomorrow so I expect the paperwork filed today," the hooded man says. The other man bobs his head and replies, "Of course, with no delay." Then they depart into the city.
Oct 27, 2024 5:22 pm
With his back against the pillar, Arkemos glanced side-eyed at the retreating duo from under his hood. Keeping the pillar between them had not allowed him to see their faces, but he had heard their comments well enough.

When he was sure they had departed into the city Arkemos emerged from the shadows and remarked, "Well they certainly did not sound like they were up to any good. If I had to guess, opportunists are using the disappearances of these maidens here to move into their domain."

The references to 'lightless places', 'depths' and the 'aquatic flourishes' seemed to indicate followers of an aquatic cult of some sort were involved, somehow.

Arkemos shrugged internally. It made little difference to him, he had problems of his own, the primary being to earn enough coin quickly to move on to any of the cities in the Northern Reach and hopefully lose his pursuers there permanently.
Oct 28, 2024 8:40 am
"They were no opportunists!" Hargrac grunts! He’d bet his beard that this was orchestrated! It had taken every ounce of composure to stop himself from jumping out and smashing them both with his hammer!

"What place in Seaside?" he asks their guide, when she stops her hiding! The dwarf supposed that she must know a place for sale!
Oct 28, 2024 8:49 am

Enimpi crawls out from under one of the pews. "I feel so bad doing that. Why should I feel guilty?" she grumbles as she dusts off her robes. Then she catches what the other party is saying. "Oh I don't think you should go running off! What will you do when you catch them? You could be thrown in a dungeon for a dozen offences before you've taken half as many steps." In order to persuade the rash dwarf from running off alone she adds, "I bet they were talking about the plot of land the Oceanus cult had bid on for their new temple. It can't be a coincidence both the plot of land and this temple were denied to them. Maybe someone is trying to keep Oceanus' believers from having a place of worship..."
Oct 30, 2024 8:19 am
Mortemiar listened to Enimpi and said, "Can someone just take away the temple places without the proper resignation of the previous owners? I mean, I don't see any moon priestess here but surely they need to give a formal resignation before others can officially take those place, right?"
Oct 30, 2024 11:20 am
"Am I to care about some piddling jotun and their temple?" Hargrac says, growing irritated by all the politics at play in the city! The words have an edge of:

Spit it out!…

"You can show us these places then, can you?" he asks of the guide, suddenly remembering that he needed paying back from the others for her services today!

Enimpi shrugs. "If the owners are all vanished, who would give a formal resignation? It is...unorthodox, but so is an entire sect's vanishing. I'm not sure there is a precedent for such a thing so I'm sure the Council would have to vote but yes, it is within their powers."

She turns to the dwarf, a perfect picture of patience that the unknown have developed over their careers dealing with other like-minded customers. "Their cult is more than just jotun. It's only that the Moon Goddess's temple is just outside of their village they were the representatives we ran into. Most of Oceanus' practitioners are humans, mostly from coastal lands and islands. Which places would you like me to show you? The empty spot in Seaside? We walked past it when we left your boat and entered the city."

Lights and temples under the water?

Arkemos raised a brow at the thought. There was much and more he had read in olden tomes but naught such as this.

"Wait, why exactly are you all interested in this? Were you hired by the Maiden's temples to investigate their disappearance?" he asked the others curiously.

There would have to be an agenda of course, no sane individual would seek to involve themselves into the twisted affairs of cults.

Especially when it appeared one cult was seeking to move into another cults territory using what appeared to be kidnapping and/or murder mixed with sorcery.

"Just so you know I am looking to make some fast money; I could help out if it is made worth my time," he added, staring directly at Enimpi.
Nov 3, 2024 12:40 pm
"Sure let's go with hired," Theodore says, not mentioning that he is investigating to keep out of jail and the possibility of a hangman's noose.

"But I'm sure they won't mind us racking up expanses by expanding the team," he continues, more than happy to bleed the town's coffers, he just don't mention how small that coffer is. He holds out a hand to Akemos. "You are hired."

GM
Enimpi looks from one of you to the other. "You are certainly the most...unique customers I've had in quite some time. Well, you still have my services for the remainder of the day. Would you like me to show you the proposed temple spot in Seaside? Or I can help you charter a boat. Can any of you captain a boat?"
Nov 3, 2024 7:48 pm
"Much obliged," Arkemos remarked to the Ferran, glancing at the hand for a moment before grasping it to seal the deal, so to speak.

He wasn't sure if Theodore spoke for the group, but that could be sorted out along the way he supposed. He needed bodies around him anyway, to help him blend in and in case the Moth Sisterhood's assassins found him and decided to strike.

"So I take it the town hired you all to investigate these disappearances. Do you know if the other temple in Lij was affected by similar disappearances of the priestesses?" he asked the Ferran, and anyone else that might care to answer, recalling that Lij and Set were the sites with the two largest temples.

"I don't have much experience with boats," he replied to Enimpi with a shrug. "But I think you should stick around whatever it is we decide to do. Anything else about these disappearances you can tell me would be good to know as well."
Nov 4, 2024 9:44 am
Hargrac groans at mention of chartering a boat. He had only just gotten his land legs back!

"That Halfling may bring us back out, if we ask nicely! It’ll probably involve a few coin too, mind." he grumbles. It had been two coins to get from one city to the next. How much could the Halfling expect to only go a short while back out onto the water?

"One thing at a time, anyhow! Let’s see this place in Seaside, and then worry about the water!

You coming for a swim then, Unspoken?"
he laughs then!
Nov 4, 2024 10:08 am
Mortemiar looked Arkemos and nodded, "Welcome to the party Arkemos. May I know your trade, perhaps? I belong to the solemn brotherhood, a devout follower of Father Death." He then turned to others, "I hope you all know how to swim if you are thinking about visiting underwater Seaside temple."

Enimpi shakes her head at the dwarf's questions. "I don't leave the city walls during business. Didn't you come in on that merchant vessel? No large ship like that will take a short passenger trip to likely danger. You'll need a personal craft like a rowboat or schooner. I'm sure you could hire one at Seaside. I wouldn't mention your true destination, however, unless you want to pay a lot more for insurance. Are any of you able to breathe underwater?"
Nov 6, 2024 10:51 am
"Do we look like we have gills," Theodore sighs. "I don't even know if I can swim. Never tried."
Nov 6, 2024 11:53 am
Mortemiar listened to everyone while nodding, "I was never a swimmer. So, how are we planning to go down then?"
Nov 6, 2024 8:09 pm
"Well met brother, I...used to apprentice under an old sorcerer, now a days I make a living doing odds and ends." Arkemos replied to Mortemiar cryptically.

Looking at Enimpi he responded with a snort, "Aye, no gills for me either." With a small shrug of his folded arms he added under his breath, "At least not permanently."

Seeing as there appeared to be a bit of a deadlock in the decision making Arkemos stated, "If we are all set to go to Seaside then I say lets go and see this temple spot Enimpi can show us. We can look into hiring a boat from there if we need to."
Nov 7, 2024 12:01 pm
"Might there be some potions or the like for us land-folk?" the dwarf asks, genuinely enough!

"Spose I wanted to pay a visit and see what this place is all about before joining up proper! Must be that they have potions for that kind of thing!"
Nov 10, 2024 12:28 pm
GM
Enimpi smiles. "Well shall we take the long way around to see the other side of the city as we make our way back to Seaside? As for potions, you might be able to find some at the alchemist's shops. I also believe a few members of Oceanus are magicians and they specialize in water magic. I'm sure it is within their ability to perform spells which will protect you from the water. And if you are intending to help them out, I think they'd be glad to help you return the favor."

Enimpi leads you southwest through another opening in the city's dividing walls which leads onto Autarch's Crown, giving a guided tour as you follow. A high wall surrounds it, with gates opening onto each adjacent district to allow free passage. The smallest section of the city, it is home to the autarch’s palace and several governmental buildings that see to the day-to-day workings of Set.

The palace of the autarch is an enormous structure that dwarfs the other buildings here, doubling as the ruler’s residence and offices for the city’s bureaucrats. The residence comprises nearly one hundred rooms in six towers, a grand hall under a great domed roof, and quarters for the staff of two hundred servants, attendants, and guards. The palace also includes a high court, the chamber of the Council of Faith, offices for tax collectors and record keepers, and guest quarters for emissaries and diplomats from the Confederacy and beyond.

Through a gateway in the west Enimpi points out the now-ironically-named New Paradise, while a gateway in the southwest leads to High Town, where the rich and powerful live, literally looking down upon the rest of the city. As these are out of your way, she doesn't take you into these places, just giving you a quick view and moving on south, leading back into Red Roofs, albeit on the western side rather than the eastern side you traversed on your way previously. Finally you enter back into Seaside.

Enimpi takes you past the buildings you encountered previously, but through a few side streets she stops at an open area of ground. "This is it. The open plot of land the followers of Oceanus wanted to buy to build their temple."
Nov 11, 2024 11:10 am
Hargrac does his best not to seem unimpressed by the plot of land they now stood before!

"Fine place… to a certain eye!" he lets out, meaning the whole city and not just this one sorry plot!

"Can’t see what all the fuss is about, truth be told. Can you?" he asks the others, supposing they had a keener eye for traps, or entrances or magical properties than he did!

OOC:
Sorry, I'll make it a little clearer. The cultists tried to buy the temple after the Daughters all vanished a few weeks ago since the temple is now empty and there are no priestesses working there, it's effectively abandoned. The cultists are not in a feud, just seizing on an opportunity. They were already denied buying the plot they originally wanted, so this was a backup plan, which has also been denied. So someone is trying to stop the Oceanus cult from building a temple in this city which is supposed to be accepting of all religions.

Arkemos had been mostly silent, almost brooding during the walk through the city, although when they passed the palace of the Autarch his eyes appeared to almost blaze as he gazed upon the extravagance on display.

Now, staring at the empty plot he almost appeared to be ruminating on the juxtaposition of the simple land against the opulence of the palace, so intensely did he stare the empty land.

"Well, if they couldn't buy the temple nor this land, something or someone is certainly working against them. Whoever it is, they are powerful to be able to go up against an established cult, no matter its size," he remarked.

Glancing at Enimpi he asked the guide, "Do you know anyone who might wish to oppose the Oceanus cult in this city?"

ooc: Would Profession History give Arkemos any insights into the cult of Oceanus's enemies? What about the Temple of the Moon's enemies?

Stroking his chin with brow furrowed, Arkemos recalled what he could of the two cults, trying to remember if they had any enemies or were enemies of each other.

"From what I have read and heard, the cult of Oceanus may only have older offshoots of its own that might try to work against it. For the cult of the Maiden, there are no enemies that I can recall reading about, aside from the newest cult we all know about that's driven all the others out of most cities," he remarked finally to the others.

Shrugging, he went on, "It would seem then that either the cult of Oceanus is just taking advantage of a sudden opportunity here in the city. Either that, or they made it happened somehow, knowing the Cult of the Maiden has no real allies and are now moving in."

Looking at Enimpi again he added, "Unless our guide here has anything to say about it ofcourse." Arkemos was referring to his earlier question to Enimpi which had gone unanswered as of yet.

Enimpi gives a little shrug. "That matches what I've been able to learn in my dealings with both groups. Oceanus' followers have been treated as second-class citizens since they've been here, although not legally since all religions are protected here. But you know how people can ostracize or come up with very convincing reasons to discriminate that are not able to be refuted in a legal setting. They've been saving up for a long time to finally buy a temple, hoping it will lend them legitimacy. I would guess someone doesn't want them to achieve that goal. I don't have any ideas of who or why, but it has to be someone with either power or influence. These decisions are made by the Council, so either a member is doing it for their own reasons or are being provided motivation, if you know what I mean. But maybe it's best to ask them yourselves?"
Nov 20, 2024 7:14 am
Mortemiar listened to Enimpi and then said, "Well, I guess we have to talk to any member of the Oceanus cult. We have no idea about the Maiden cult and we can't seem to find any of their members either. Let's pay a visit to their temple or someone of their cult. Enimpi, do you know where the members of Oceanus stay or hang around?"
Nov 20, 2024 10:18 am
Hargrac rubs the sides of his head as the others go on about this cult and that! The names and places all begin to meld together.

Why couldn’t the long-legs keep it simple and worship the ones that came before?

"Best start making some headway! I’ve gotten my legs, but now it’s my arms that feel strange!!" he warns, feeling the urge to tackle the issue with violence, if subterfuge proved too taxing!

Enimpi nods. "Since they don't have a proper temple yet, and perhaps never with this current situation, most live in the Sprawl or New Paradise. But they usually congregate at Riptide Tavern after their workday is finished, or on the docks for worship every new moon. I can take you to the tavern tonight if you wish. Do you have a place to stay tonight?"
Nov 24, 2024 1:30 pm
Mortemiar nodded slowly, "No we haven't fixed a place for staying. Atleast, I haven't. When the time comes, I plan on staying in the temple of Father Death. Let's meet with these people on the Riptide Tavern then."
Nov 24, 2024 7:55 pm
Arkemos shook his head replying, "I just came into town a short while ago, but I'm not ready to turn in for the day anyway. Lets go to this tavern first and get some answers."

Truth be told Arkemos didn't really care for either cult, or the disappearances. But he needed money, and fast, and the best way he could see that happening quickly was if they got to the bottom of this case. At least, close enough to the bottom to get paid.

"You have been with us all day Empi," Theodore says with a smile at their guide. "When would we have snuck off to get accommodations?" He turns his attention to Mortemiar "I would prefer a house of worship for a god of alcohol rather than death, but beggars can't be choosers I suppose."

Enimpi nods her head. "Since it is still the early afternoon, most citizens will be working, but if it is your desire to wait there then I shall gladly guide you." She turns to the dwarf. "My services are yours until the sun fully sets. If you desire to wait in the tavern I won't complain. It will be good to rest my feet," she smiles.

Enimpi leads you back north a little ways into Red Roofs. The Riptide Tavern is slightly more upscale than the holes-in-the-wall taverns located directly in Seawatch. It has the distinctive red-tiled roofs of all other buildings in this district and is two stories high. The tavern sign is a rectangle bisected laterally with blue waves with a black skeleton swimming under them. Inside is a modest tavern with a central area containing a bar and two dozen tables, a hearth opposite the bar, and a small stage at the far end. There are only a handful of people currently, most eating a late lunch or having a drink and a rest. A slight of stairs on the left behind the bar leads to the second floor. A short bald human in a white apron and covered with tattoos nods at you as you enter. He gives a more formal bow to your guide. "Greetin's, unspoken. What can I do fer ya?" he says in a heavily accented voice.

Enimpi gives a small bow in return. "My clients would like somewhere to rest for a few hours until some of your regulars arrive."

The barkeep nods. "Go ahead and pick a table and I'll be by fer yer order."

"I hope your guidance is as good in here as it is out there!" Hargrac says to the guide, as he pulls himself into a seat!

"I don’t want any pig swill or piss ale! Come on, Unspoken! Order us up the good stuff! What’ll it be?" he says, beckoning for the others to sit! His eyes shift around, scanning for the goblins and hoping they might be off doing reconnaissance!
Dec 2, 2024 1:44 pm
Mortemiar eyed the tavern and noticed all the details it had to offer. He then sat at the table with Hargrac and others. Hopefully they will meet some Oceanus members and get to the bottom of this mystery.
Dec 3, 2024 6:57 am
"Hope you new recruits have coin! I spent mine on our Unspoken, and the goblins have run off without paying their share! Gits!

You’ll not find me shelling out to the benefit of that lot again soon…"
he says, smarting at the hole in his pocket after the morning’s walk!

"I may as well have overspent in our last port of call, though I'm sure it will be but a temporary setback," Theodore says, looking around for a fat purse to lighten. He don't like to steal where he eat, but on their way out it could be an option to earn back whatever he spends. "Though, I do think I should have enough for an ale and a stew."
Dec 3, 2024 7:51 pm
Mortemiar sighed, "I don't have any coins to spare. So, I will be just sitting here until members of Oceanus temple comes in for the day."
Dec 4, 2024 12:23 pm
"Gods, you are a sorry lot! You make it hard for a dwarf to enjoy his drink!" he says with a harsh sigh!

Then he comes around, and with a sadder sigh, fishes two large fingers into his coin purse:

"Fine, what’ll to be? Cant bloody well drink alone, can I?"

You pass a few hours in the tavern eating and drinking and resting your feet after trekking up one side of the city and down the other. Enimpi is a pleasant and informative guide. She tells you about Set's origins as a small fishing village during the Dark Times of the Witch-King's reign and how a few years after his downfall. When the Order of Light, the religion of the Kalasan liberators, grew more fervant converts, other faiths became unwelcome and priests and priestesses by the thousands were cast out. Then-autarch Principillia seized on this and sent messages far and wide accepting all faiths to her city. The discarded faithful answered and thus Set became the City of Gods.

She then gives an overview of the current autarch, Wise Father Justin, and his mysterious origins and how a quiet and unassuming man with no political connections and no obvious wealth was able to take the position left many in the city surprised and wondering just where exactly he came from. The autarch has so far kept quiet about his past, becoming evasive when questioned too closely. She then describes how the Council of Faith advises the autarchs in order to keep the peace with so many religious factions. The current Council is made up of Mother Aguile, The Gray One, Dark Father Marcus, Bjorgun the Troll-Killer, Cassandra, Argus, and Mad Robin.

Using religious law in such a diverse city proved impossible so they created a secular law. As one might expect, murder, theft, assault, and other violent crimes are illegal and earn severe punishments, such as flogging, hanging, slavery, and exile. There is a permanent ban on the summoning of demons, the creation of monsters, and the use of certain forms of magic. Finally, the city doesn’t tolerate violence driven by religious differences, as all faiths are welcome. This law is enforced by the All-Faiths Company, who've you run into earlier today arguing with the jotun.

She also rattles off recent events happening through the city: A rash of unsolved killings in New Paradise, a sinkhole opened up a house in Red Roofs and a handful of demons escaped ravaging the neighborhood for several hours, and militant cultists of the one True God settled in the Sprawl and are causing interfaith violence to break out.

Finally after all of this several people enter the tavern who Enimpi points out. She nods to a dwarf with a shaved head and tattoos on his neck and face. "That's Gruphenter, head priest of Oceanus. He'll be the one you want to talk to. I suggest quickly since it looks like the sun will be setting within the hour," she says looking out a window at the orange and purple sky.
OOC:
Whew! Feel free to ask about anything Enimpi mentioned. Most of it is just lore but there's some side-quest plot hooks buried in there as well if you're interested!
Dec 5, 2024 1:28 pm
"Quite the city you have," Theodore says when he hears of sinkholes and demons. "Are demons a common occurence?"

Seeing the priest of Oceanus, Theodore is quick to get off his stool. "Time to make a good first impression,"

Seeing the man is a dwarf, he adds: "And for once, you might come in handy for just that Hargrac."

"You care to make introductions Enimpi? Make sure we don't acidentally insult their divinity."
Dec 5, 2024 3:25 pm
Mortemiar listened to Enimpi about the city's history and current news. He was impressed that Enimpi could remember all these things. But, when she told them Gruphenter, he straightened up and looked at the tattooed dwarf. It was their chance to understand what exactly was going on here.
Dec 7, 2024 12:07 am
Arkemos drank only water as he listened intently to Enimpi, eager to get some news of recent going ons.

His ears perked when she mentioned the rash of unsolved killings, immediately wondering if the Moth Sisterhood was involved, his eyes darting to the shadows even as the thought flitted through his mind. He was taken aback then, when Enimpi casually mentioned demons popping into the city and ravaging the neighborhood.

That's certainly something that needs more scrutiny he thought wryly. Versed in arcane lore he had an inkling how dangerous such an incursion could be.

"Tell me more about the unresolved killings, what methods were used in the murders? Did the deaths have their tongues cut out?"
That was one of the trademarks of the Moth Sisterhood, though sometimes they cut tongues out of living victims as well. "And uh, the demonic incursion, some information about that would be nice to know," Arkemos added hastily.

Ofcourse, the head priest of oceanus chose that moment to enter, pointed out by Enimpi. Arkemos did not move to meet the dwarf, letting Theodore take the lead on it.

OOC:
This conversation takes place over about 2 hours so there's more than enough time to ask about the rumors before the priest shows up lol.
Enimpi looks at Arkemon in some surprise. "Yes, in face they did have their tongues cut out. Are you familiar with these murders? As for the demons, the most likely explanation was that whatever caused the sinkhole likely summoned the demons. Perhaps a summon gone wrong. The strangest thing is that nobody knows who lived in the house. The sale and deed records were missing or never filed. Thankfully the guards killed the escaped demons but did suffer a few losses themselves."

At Theodore's suggestion Enimpi nods and gives a small smile. "Just don't say anything about their customs and you should be fine. They are a persecuted minority so are used to hostility and prejudice. Try not to show any of that and you should be fine." She gets up and goes to the dwarf and his fellows who have taken up two tables in a back corner of the tavern. She speaks for a short while, indicating your group with a slight head motion. He looks you over, analyzing, judging. Finally he nods and stands up, following Enimpi back to your table.

"This is Wavemaster Gruphenter. Wavemaster, these are my clients for the day: Theodore, Mortemier, Arkemos, and Hargrac. As a I said, they wish to speak to you about your recent troubles with your temple."

"So's you say," he grunts. "Well I shan't look a gift horse in the mouth. Truth is we don't get much offers of help."
Dec 7, 2024 1:34 pm
Mortemiar was listening to Arkemos about the murders and demon summoning but then focused on the priest of Oceanus once they were introduced by Enimpi. "Greetings Wavemaster Gruphenter, we have arrived at Set very recently and we are looking for jobs. We have heard that there is some animosity thrown against your people and that you are facing problems in establishing yourself here. We can help you in this case with our skills if you can perhaps elaborate on this matter."
Dec 8, 2024 10:49 am
"Hey-up! Those sound like things we could actually get our hooks into! And our hammers!" Hargrac says, as there’s talk of murders and demons! None of this high society maneuvering and priestly politicking for Hargrac.

"Good old fashioned hammering is more my speed! Shame about those priestesses bungling it for me!"

To the dwarf, Hargrac casts an eye that means to get the measure of the priest! Hargrac didn’t fancy working for some sad case! Only right that a dwarf had a stiffness about them!

"Depends on what kind of skills you’re after, mind you!"

The dwarf grunts and nods his head. "'Animosity' is a gold crown word but aye, you've got the right o' it. Us Oceanus followers've been trying to set up a temple for a bit now but they denied us wit' every opportunity. Council says our preferred site's been claimed by some other group, but won't say who and I ain't believe 'em anyway. We've been here decades and our plans've been known for years we'd be buying this spot as soon as we'd saved our money. Then the temple witches all vanished so we offered to buy that but denied again. We are simple priests, not employers, but maybe's we could work out a deal. How're you thinkin' o' helpin' us?"
Dec 11, 2024 8:27 am
"Could smash some heads." Hargrac says with a hopeful edge to his voice. He knew one of the others would offer up a more sensible, and boring, offer a moment after!
Dec 11, 2024 12:03 pm
"Oh Hargrac. There you go underselling our magnificent skills once again," Theodore beams. "Assuming we speak about theory, and just spitballing ideas, we should be able to get to the truth of the matter by other means as well. We could retrieve any dispatch from the council to get to the truth of the matter." Theodore says it, knowing full well he can't read and would be hard pressed to identify any such dispatch.

"Or we could let loose our blunt instrument here," he continues patting Hargrac on the back. "And get the truth from a concillor the old fashioned method. That is if you even want to know the details. Easier to deny any knowledge if you are truly without knoweldge."
Dec 12, 2024 7:48 am
Mortemiar clasped his hands together and said, "There is clearly discrimination here against your people. We might look into this matter and persuade someone who knows into the internal workings. Maybe we can come into some arrangement or atleast give you the actual facts."

Wavemaster Gruphenter chuckles. "You lot've got spirit, I'll give ya that. I think yer underestimatin' the power of the Councilors however. They're the highest leaders of their orders and powerful to boot. I don't doubt yer skills, but if ya think ya'll be able to get close let alone 'smash some heads' ya'll be wearin' yar intestines fer belts! Also we dun wanta attract any mo' negative attention to ourselves. If any violence is caused in our names, the entire city'll be on us like ants onna picnic basket. If yer wanna help us, discretion be the word o' the day. Now then, I think a Councilor is most likely bein' bribed or blackmailed against us. If ya find who that is, that'll be a start. Interceptin' dispatches is indeed a good method o' doin' that. If ya can track down this fella ya heard in the church, that'd be a solid lead indeed."
Dec 15, 2024 4:32 pm
Arkemos's eyes widened at Enimpi's reply, but as she was about to introduce them to the dwarf he only hissed, "I will explain later, in private."

Trying to calm himself, though keeping eyes on the windows & fireplace of the establishment (the Moth Sisterhood preferred avoiding coming in the front door, chimney's being one of their preferred methods of entering a target's location) all the same, Arkemos attempted to focus the conversation between his new found companions and the Wavemaster.

Despite the tense situation Arkemos couldn't help but crack a smile at Hargrac's eagerness to crack some skulls. Need to keep this one close, he could be useful, the thought flitted through his mind.

"Wavemaster, with all due respect, from what I have read and heard of the cult of Oceanus, perhaps it is the cult's practices that make the city unwilling to offer you abode here?" Arkemos suggested to the dwarf in a guarded tone.

Given the secular nature of the city, harboring a cult known for making ritual sacrifices, likely of unwilling participants be they human, dwarf or otherwise, would not be a popular move to make for the Council.

"Perhaps this is the Council's way of saying you should leave for different shores? Please pardon the expression," Arkemos added with a tight lipped smile.

GM
The dwarf Wavemaster laughs. "Indeed ya must be new to Set. I can see you also know quite a bit about our order, more'n most. But in Set, we dun practice those rituals. All religions must abide by the secular laws which bind us all. And following such laws, all religions are welcome. Even the high priest o' Diabolus has a seat on the Council! Dun get much more evil'n that!"
Dec 16, 2024 12:14 pm
Hargrac rolls his eyes at the unimaginative Dwarf sat before him. Cracking a head or two would get the thing unstuck. Just have to pick the right ones.

"Subterfuge it is! We’ve got two goblins with us, and there’s this lot! They’ll get it done! I’ll… well, I’ll be here, I suppose! Not much for skulking about, me!"
Dec 16, 2024 1:41 pm
"Don't say that. You're the great distraction that makes our subterfuge go off without a hitch," Theodore says.
Dec 17, 2024 6:55 am
"Aye! Now that’s a plan!" Hargrac says, imagining the trouble he might get into! And if some acolyte got their ears punched down some alleyway after chasing a dwarf away, well… that’s unfortunate!
Dec 22, 2024 5:15 am
GM
"Two goblins?" the Wavemaster asks as he looks around the tavern and sees not a goblin in sight. "Aye in any case, this matter be a might political so just be careful who's skulls ya be crackin'. If ya be as trustful as I hope, look into Councilor Argus. He's a priest o' Oceanus as well but hasn't attended any services recently. We don't know if he didn't support us or he was overruled. We used ta communicate via an errand boy named Darvey but haven't seen him recently either."
Dec 22, 2024 8:44 am
Mortemiar listened to the wavemaster, "Very well. These are some places where we can start. Couincilor Argus and Darvey. Can you tell us where they live? We will pay them a visit then."
Dec 23, 2024 12:52 pm
"You won’t see them! They specialize in that sort of thing!" Hargrac says when the other dwarf makes a show of looking for his companions!

"Aye! Put us on the trail of this errand boy! Easiest path first, I say!"
Dec 24, 2024 12:03 pm
GM
The Wavemaster looks at Mortemiar as as if he had three eyes, the looks at Enimpi who gives a shy smile and shrugs. "Ya feelin' all right this day? What do ya mean 'pay them a visit'? Darvey, sure, but ya can't just have a li'l stop by at the Councilor's residence! Might as well say 'I'll just have a quick chat with the king'! Some folks waitin' weeks to meet a Councilor. I'm afraid if ya in a hurry that won' do. Darvey hasn' been seen in a bit but he lives somewhere in the southern parts o' New Paradise. Close ta High Town but not in it, see? If ya ask around there people'll be able ta point ya in the right direction."
Dec 24, 2024 1:24 pm
Mortemiar obviously didn't know about the hierarchy of the city officials in Set and felt a bit embarrassed at the clarification. He nodded and said, "Ah, I was unaware of the position held by the officials here. We will start with Darvey then and maybe find someway to get in the queue for meeting the Couincilor."
Dec 26, 2024 1:23 pm
Hargrac stands up suddenly, ready to be on the road. He wobbles back and forth at the table as all the beer and blood rush to his head!

"Right… Well…" he starts, before stopping to collect his thoughts!

"Sounds like our kind of lad, this Darney! We’ll say you were asking for him, so he knows who sent him, aye! Don’t want him getting frightened off when us lot show up!"
Dec 28, 2024 10:21 pm
Arkemos stroked his chin as he listened to the Wavemaster speak. This was indeed puzzling, why would the cult be denied so if the city did indeed allow any other cult to have a seat. The logical answer did appear then to be that some other cult or multiple cults either had some enmity with the cult of oceanus or some benefit by ostracizing them.

Likely a land grab then, to line the pockets of certain councilors. Likely the oceanus cult's councilor's been bought off as well. he mused to himself, careful not to speak his thoughts out loud in front of the Wavemaster.

It appeared meeting this Dravey and the Councillor appeared to be the only way forward to get to the truth.

"I don't suppose you have any theories yourself as to why your cult is not being sold any land? Whatever you tell us in confidence won't be repeated to anyone else," Arkemos said to the dwarf, putting on his most trustworthy expression as he did so.
Dec 31, 2024 9:57 am
"Aye! And who would listen to us anyway?" Hargrac adds with a toothy, ugly smile. He’d had enough teeth punched out in fights beneath the earth to make a grown man wince once he’s seen it.
Jan 1, 2025 10:22 am
GM
The Wavemaster gives a shrug. "Aye, I got theories, but theories are about as useless as a fish with legs. But since ya asked, I'd guess that someone has a grudge against our cult but can't be seen openly discriminatin' 'gainst us, or it is all some high falutin' rich people scheme with land development and such. Or something I hasn't thought of," he shrugs again. "Whichever it is, I don' much care. I just want ta get it solved."

Enimpi offers to take you to New Paradise but says this will likely be her last duty before her service has expired for the day. She takes you into the corner, giving you the guided tour of the place.

The people living in Set’s southwestern corner call their district New Paradise, though the district is about as far from heaven as a place could be. High walls with crenellated battlements seal off the district from its neighbors, but pressure from the Sprawl has kept the gate leading out of the city open for over a decade, allowing outsiders free passage to the city’s interior. The neighboring districts have sealed their gates in the inner walls to prevent the influx of refugees and immigrants into their communities. Thus, visitors seeking access to the rest of the city
must push through the press of buildings and navigate New Paradise’s tortured streets to find the Grand Gate that opens onto the inner city, and even then, the doors stand open for just eighteen minutes each day.

New Paradise was originally a wealthy district, and its four- and five-story buildings housed the richest families in Set. All that has changed, however; most buildings were abandoned and have since been taken over by squatters. Where once families and their servants enjoyed spacious quarters with gardens, balconies, and more, now the walls almost groan from the numbers of people squeezed within. Rope bridges stretch between the windows of close-by buildings to speed transit across the densely populated area, and many people now travel over these slender walkways.

Smoke, cooking, human filth, and sweat give New Paradise a thick atmosphere, though locals eventually grow accustomed to the district’s foul mélange. People living here are not much better off than those out in the Sprawl, but they at least get to claim a piece of the city—provided someone bigger and tougher doesn’t come along. Since the All-Faiths Company rarely bothers to patrol New Paradise, locals have learned to dispense their own kind of justice. Murderers, thieves, brutes, and others disappear if they cause too much trouble.
