Every now and then this site hosts a narrative wargame campaign. I would like to try my hand at something like that with The Barons' War, to exchange blows about what truly matters: taxes and rural land!

The Barons' War is a quick, dirty, and easy skirmish system that would go in handy with GP's posting. There are other systems one could try, such as MESBG to play with a Lord of the Rings story, SAGA which I would find passable in a play by post setting, and all the Warhammer stuff.

I believe The Barons' War could be the perfect background for politics, betrayals, marriages, roleplays, and of course, death and taxes.

Would anyone like to try?

Looks like fun. But how big is each warband?

If we're looking to do skirmish games then maybe Mordheim would be a good shout? I'm biased though.

I'd be up for most things, and I was tempted to check something like this too, but I don't know what games people would know/have? For example I don't know The Barons' War, not that I'm not happy to learn.

I'd be up for this, and willing to learn whatever system it ends up using

Mordheim is cool, and very full with flavor.
But allow me to offer onepagerules, if we want something more rules lite.
That would be either of their skirmish systems. (Age of Fantasy Skirmish or Grimdark Future Firefight)

I was thinking for long time of making a skirmish game on GP. Once I even begun it, but the player went off-line:( I was mainly looking to use Space Weirdoes rules for my game. Don't know Barons' War rules, but would like at least be added as spectator to this game. And in the future invite you all to my Space Weirdoes or it's fantasy brother game:)

OPR is quite nice too, and I know it, but I don't have a campaign system behind it.

Warbands are small. 500 points warband are smaller than 4 points SAGA warbands, so 20 figures?

Tbh, I'd throw in another vote for OPR.

I don't know Barons' War either, but OPR does have the advantage of having most of their rules free and available which eliminates the issues of those interested not having x,y,z.

If I was to play I would be very ok with OPR too... but please, count me at the last place in order to be an active player. But still hoping to able to observe your game.

For campaign rules, OPR has some basic warband progression rules freely available.
For proper territory control there's the gang wars for GFF, or we'd have to get other rules ourselves.
Gang wars could also be reflavored for AOFS, since it's working on the same rules.

Yes, please! Couple of questions:

1. How many players are you thinking for the game?
2. If more than 2, do you envisage an all-against-all scenario, or might players create pacts and alliances ala Diplomacy?

Okay, so, a word of advice.

MESBG is quite old, but holds up pretty well and it's fantasy, something that people like. I got the rulebooks. The problem is that minis are individuals, and that could be challenging for combat. So is age of trebuchet.

SAGA has a splash of fantasy, easy rules, and campaign rules. It activates horizontally, and it's very good for 'your dudes'. The only issue I would have would be activating Saga abilities during combat or shooting.

I don't know Mordheim, but it's quite complicated even if fantasy and beloved. Not my priority.

I know OPR and I like it. I think Age of Fantasy would work best, and alternating activations could be handy, but we would completely left alone for the campaign and I'm not sure I like it.

The Barons' War was my original idea. Easy and quick with campaing support.

And I was thinking it could be a free for all but with the ability to build alliances.

I would like OPR but if I'm going OPR we're going full Warhammer, aside from the mechanics.

May he embrace us in all four of his arms.

For an OPR warhammer, i think putting it in something mordheim-adjacent or some underhive gang war would be most conducive to impromptu alliances and treachery between warbands, given larger factions can be quite dogmatic.

Considering our popular options
OPR is simpler, and easier to get the rules.
But campaign rules are minimal

Baron's war has some more interesting campaign rules, but might be harder for everyone to get and is a bit more complicated.

So, a roll off.

The Barons' War, or OPR.

I'd be happy with an invite to play in either!
Sep 24, 2024 4:25 pm
I've always been more fond of sci fi settings, but beyond that I'm happy to play either. Who's rolling :p
Sep 24, 2024 6:29 pm
I too am good with either.
For the roll, as the person who started this thread, it seems appropriate for Appalahi to roll.
