https://i.imgur.com/L6v0YlS.pngThe scruffy old salt leant on the quayside capstan, shielding his nose warmer from the westerly. He was not a clever man, but he had lived to become an old man, and on the Sea of Swords, survival was a clever trick indeed. Beside him stood a noble young Waterdhavian midshipman, each gold button a polished testament to Waterdeep's wealth. The lad was barely old enough to shave, but he was old enough to have felt cruel sea's lash.

"The sages venture that all life began in the oceans." The young midshipman cast the observation before the salt like chum, hoping the old sailor would take the bait and impart some of his briny wisdom.

The old salt grunted, taking the observation without offering an opinion on its veracity in return.

"Aye? Dunnaknow. But I be darin' to say that all life be ending there."

The midshipman looked to tempest brewing on the horizon.
This adventure is based on Ghosts of Saltmarsh and set on the island nation of Orlumbor off the Sword Coast in the Forgotten Realms.

The D&D free rules are the same as the regular rules. The only difference is that the free rules have fewer options for players. In the free rules, there aren't as many subclass options, feats, spells, or species, but it's still the same game.

You can read them here.
🎲 Game System and Rules Version
This game will use the Dungeons and Dragons 2024 free rules.
🪝 The Pitch
A classic campaign to introduce people to D&D 2024 and is intended for people who want to try Dungeons & Dragons but aren't sure they want to spend forty quid on the player's handbook.

This is not a game for experienced D&D players.

👋 Who am I?
I've been on Gamers' Plane for about five years and have DMed about twenty D&D games here, including games for new players. About half of the games I've DMed finished with a conclusion and about half of those were fun, so I reckon there's about a one-in-four chance this will be a fun game that gets to the end.
🚩 Controversial Content

😳 Sex & nudity None
There's no sexual content.

⚔️ Violence & Gore Moderate
It's D&D. There will be violence.

🤬 Profanity Severe
You've heard the expression 'to swear like a sailor'? These are those sailors.

🍺 Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking Moderate
Because what shall we do without a drunken sailor?

😱 Frightening & Intense Scenes Severe
Some of the ghost stories cross lines. There will be infanticide, suicide, abuse, and torture. There will be no sexual violence, homophobia or transphobia.

🤖 AI graphics Severe
This game will contain many AI-generated images.

☠️ Character death Severe
Characters sometimes die in my games. You need to accept the possibility that your bones in the ocean forever will be.
⛔ Character Restrictions
I will insist that all characters are made using the free rules only.
📆 Game Duration and Post Frequency
I've found that games succeed when everyone has the same posting frequency, so if you're interested in this game, could you also let me know how often you think you'll be able to post? We all need to have roughly the same speed, whatever that might be.

At a guess - this will take about twelve months unless we abandon it early.

💻 Specialized Software and Resources
You must be on Discord (text, not voice) to play this game, as we'll use Discord for out-of-character stuff and scuttlebutt.
🐣 Player Experience Requirements
No play-by-post, role-playing game, Forgotten Realms, or Dungeons and Dragons experience is necessary. This game is intended for people new or newish to D&D.
🎟️ How to Apply
Post in this thread. Please don't post your character concepts, as I'd prefer us to work those out when the game starts so you can better craft a character that fits into the setting of Saltmarsh and with the other PCs. Just let me know your experience with role-playing games and how often you think you'll post to the game. Oh, and you must have uploaded an avatar to Gamers' Plane and have at least made a post introducing yourself.

There's no rush to post in this thread, and I will leave this advert open for a week for people to express their interest.

I’m interested! I admittedly have a decent amount of experience with D&D already, so I understand that puts me low on priority, but I haven’t so much as glanced at any of the new 2024 rules and I’m interested in taking a stab at them. Also a big fan of the pirate aesthetic.

As far as posting goes, I can probably do 1/day but I think 5/week is a more reasonable estimate. This would only be my second game on the site so I wouldn’t have too much else to keep up with.
Oct 4, 2024 6:23 pm
I would love to give it a go, just to test out the 2024 rules a bit. That said, if you want complete newbies, others should probably be picked first.

Should probably just give others a go.

Yo-ho-ho! Ahoy matey, weigh anchor and set sail for adventure!

Also popping in to highly recommend Adam's games. Be you new or old, there's something there for you. The only reason I'm not hopping in is because it's targeted towards newcomers to D&D.

10/10, would highly recommend, would play again.

Ahoy matey! This sounds perfect, and I'd love to join in! I've only played a little bit of the original 5E via the starter adventure that our DM ran. We were actually supposed to start Saltmarsh after, but he nixed that in favor of going back to DnD 3.5/homebrew.

Personally, I'd love to try out the updated rules for 5E and the Saltmarsh adventure.

Can post 1/day or 5x/week. Have PbP'ed using Discord before. Only in one other game, so a light load.

Thanks!

And here ladies and gentlemen, is another reason Adam is such a delight to play with :D

Not applying, just tossing out my two cents. Adam runs a great game. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll probably die.

If you like:
• NPCs that are ACTUALLY people and not just information hubs.
• Challenging combat where the bad guys want to win, and will use strategy.
• Music!! So much excellent music.
Trauma Emotional Storytelling
• Settings that have character.

Then give it a go! You get what you put in. But don't doubt he puts in a lot.

I’m not new… but that’s something you knew. Anyhoo this game is something I’d like to do, if it’s ok with you.

I have the original Secrets of Saltmarsh, Something of Dunwater and, Lost Temple of SoggyCereal in my basement somewhere. I worked in a Hobby shop and got a lot of stuff dirt cheap.

Arr, Ghosts of Saltmarsh is an anthology of those old modules along with a few adventures from Dungeon magazine, then very loosely linked with a paper-thin plot.

In that spirit, I'll also draw on other modules and published adventures and try to shoehorn them into Saltmarsh (with a different paper-thin plot).

Originally, the D&D 2024 free rules included only four classes - the fighter, the rogue, the wizard, and the cleric. I thought that limited choice was a neat callback to Ghosts of Saltmarsh's old-school modules. But then WotC decided to add the other classes to the free rules, which undercut that idea somewhat. I'll just have to make up for it by making the game old-school deadly instead.
From what I can see from the current interest: @forkbeard has limited D&D experience and fits the bill, and I hope @CherokeeWind won't mind me saying that she could hardly be called a veteran. @Snomin has a decent amount of experience with D&D, and there's a fair chance that both @runekyndig and @Yngve.Yngvesson have each played more D&D than I have (a near certainty in Rune's case). So it might be the case that this game's new player criterion is dead in the water, but we'll see what the rest of this week brings.

And whilst I appreciate the kind reviews from @Gearspark and @cowleyc, we should remember that survivor bias is a real phenomenon. The players who haven't enjoyed playing with me are too polite to post, right? Still nice to hear though. Cheers, maties.

Hello!
To be honest, I don't quite fit the bill either - I've been playing DnD 5e on and off for about four-ish years now, but I must admit that I've never gotten particularily good at it. Don't know the 2024 rules at all! I think that should be it?
I do have some experience with PbPsting online, altough the intricacies of Gamers Plane specifically elude me - the formatting in the original post is a magnificent work of art and something I don't think I'll ever be able to reproduce. Many options!
5-7 posts a week sounds like it could work, I think I'll manage to squeeze in a message every day.
So, yeah! I understand if I don't make it as my qualities aren't those that you're looking for, but why not try :)

Just sounding in because of Adam's teaser, I strangely haven't played with Adam yet (hopefully our paths will cross!), but his reputation precedes him! He genuinely has the spirit of bringing a great gaming experience to people who've yet to fully appreciate the system, so I can see why this pitch is aimed at the newer players.

Consider me an unbiased commentator! ;)

All these compliments convinced me to shoot my shot, even though I might not fit with the rest. I've got just a little bit of experience with dnd irl, dm'ed about 20 sessions, and 2-3 as a player. I'm in in three PBP games here on GP for about a month now, and would like to join your game. My schedule is pretty irregular with long hours, so some days I can post every hour, and some times I struggle to find time, and two days could pass without the opportunity to submit a good post.

Is there truly not a soul who is not familiar with...

checks notes

...the most popular roleplaying game in the world, and likely of all time?
Oct 9, 2024 3:55 am
I maybe sort of fit the bill - in a technical sense. I have played a fair number of roleplaying games, but I have only played 3 games of actual D&D. I played one game in middle school and died to chain lightning from a lich in the first session, another game about a decade ago where I was killed by a mindflayer in the first session, and an online Dark Sun game that sadly fizzled out pretty early on. I have minor experience with several D&D adjacent games like 13th Age and Shadow of the Demon Lord. I have also played in several OSR flavors for short adventures. I have not played any 5e although I did buy a few of the books. I know nothing about 5.5e. I almost bought the 5e Ghosts of Saltmarsh but bought Princes of the Apocalypse instead. LOL

My main roleplaying experience comes from playing PbtA games and various story games about a decade ago. I am just now starting to get back into gaming and have signed up for a few other games on GP. I could commit to posting 5-7 times per week for this game.
