I'd like us to start the game in Khorvaire, but other then being on the continent I'm open to ideas as to where we begin. Some places I've thought of are:
1) Sharn, the City of Towers
2) Salvation, a ramshackle town on the edge of the Mournland
3) A village in the Shadow Marches
4) Adderport in Q'barra
5) The piratical Lazaar Principalities
6) A village in Karnaath
7) New Cyre
These are just some thoughts. If you're familiar with the setting and have suggestions I'm open to them.

Well, if no one else wants to play a warforged, I have an idea for a warforged monk.
Oct 25, 2024 5:36 pm
Thanks for the invite, looking forward to this. :)
I assume we'll be starting at Novice?
I think a bad of folks exploring the Mournlands might be interesting. Ib that case, I guess would be for starting in Salvation. I'm flexible though.
I've never gotten to completely explore an idea for a Dragonmarked Human with the Mark of Passage. He'd be a Magus/Swordmage type of character.

Yes you will be starting at Novice Rank.
@Knighthawke, would your character be a member in good standing of House Orien, or an excoriate?

One of the core elemente of Eberron, is ofcorse the post-war situation. I know my character severed in the war in some capacity.
I like the dragonmarked houses, might be a dragonmarked. Perhaps Mark of Detection
I feel exploring exploring the Mournlands is good for dungon crawl, not so much for PBP
I would like to have some air-ship action.

I've actually found the Mournlands a great setting for more creepy stories. It's eerie, twisted and strange, and so is everything in it. But we don't have to go there. A lot of Eberron campaigns do. We can do something different if that's what you all like.
Please also keep in mind that wherever we start, we don't have to stay there.
And yes, I'm sure there will be airships.

@runekyndig brings up a good question. The Last War went on for 101 years, and only ended two years ago. What was your character doing during the war?

@JoshuaMabry - I just noticed this…
So a Human would start with 2, one "any" and one Background or Professional?
Savage Eberron says:
All adventurers begin play with one free Background or Professional Edge.Oct 26, 2024 4:01 am
Nice! A Dragonmark is a Background Edge so that is a plus!
I have to ask because it would fit my concept… would you allow the Magus from Savage Pathfinder?
MAGUS
REQUIREMENTS: Novice, Smarts d6+, Fighting d6+
Some spend their lives poring over ancient tomes and texts, unlocking the power of magic while others spend their time becoming weapon masters without equal. The magus is at once a student of both philosophies, blending magical ability and martial prowess into something entirely unique.
As he grows in power, the magus unlocks powerful forms of arcana that allow him to merge his talents further, and at the pinnacle of his art, the magus becomes a blur of steel and magic.
ARCANE BACKGROUND (Magus): Magus use Spellcasting as their arcane skill. This gives them 10 Power Points and two powers from the list below.
Available Powers: Baleful polymorph, barrier, blast, bolt, boost/lower Trait, burst, damage field, deflection, detect/conceal arcana, disguise, dispel, drain Power Points, entangle, environmental protection, fly, growth/shrink, havoc, illusion, invisibility, light/darkness, protection, shape change, smite, speed/sloth, summon ally, telekenesis, teleport, wall walker, warrior's gift.
ARMOR INTERFERENCE (Light): While wearing medium or heavy armor or using medium or heavy shields, the character's arcane skill rolls suffer a −4 penalty. The hero cannot use other abilities granted by this Edge or any Edge that has this Edge as a Requirement.
MAGUS ARCANA: A magus can use his Power Points to enhance his magic and weapon. The following are abilities he can use and how many Power Points they cost to activate.
• Arcane Accuracy (2): Gain a +1 Bonus on your next Fighting roll.
• Critical Strike (1): After getting a raise on an attack, reduce the MAP of all other action this round by 2
• Enhancement (2): Give your weapon a 1 point Enhancement for 5 rounds.
• Hasted Assault (1): The magus doubles his Pace this turn.
• Reflection (*): When a power targeting the magus is successfully cast, the magus can spend a number of Power Points equal to what the caster spent. This caster becomes the new target of the spell.
SPELLBOOKS: A magus uses a spellbook just as a wizard does.
SPELLSTRIKE: As a limited action, a magus can cast a spell through a one handed weapon. The magus makes an attack roll, using the lowest of his Fighting and Spellcasting. This functions the same as using a power with the Touch Limitation except it also deals weapon damage.
MAGUS EDGES
WAND MASTERY
REQUIREMENTS: Seasoned, Magus
A magus can hold a wand or staff in his off hand and use them when attempting a spellstrike.
SPELL RECALL
REQUIREMENTS: Veteran, Magus
The magus can spend a Benny to recover all lost Power Points.
COUNTERSTRIKE
REQUIREMENTS: Heroic, Magus
Whenever an enemy within reach of the magus successfully casts a spell, the magus may make a free attack against them.
TRUE MAGUS
REQUIREMENTS: Wild Card, Legendary, at
least two Magus Edges
Whenever the magus uses spellstrike he ignores Arcane Resistance and Arcane Resistance (Imp)

Thanks for the invite! And the book repository, looking forward to digging into the lore more.
Still thinking of an Artificer or Soulknife, maybe gnome but not sure yet. Regarding the Artificer I'm a bit confused on how they work. Is it more like weird science where I'm using a mechanical trapping, or am I actually investing power points into items, for myself and others to use? If the latter, are these permanent or temporary?

I think I'm going in the direction of the artificer magi ability.
I'm thinking my character was a quartermaster in a group of soldiers/agents/spies. Connection to the Dragon Mark house of finding.
I have the rough idea now. Next is to build a character

[ +- ] Contemplation
Novice Female Warforged
Background
Originally, Contemplation was a warforged for Cyre. She was assigned as a battlefield medic. On the Day of Mourning, she was on the outskirts of that land and was thus spared destruction. For the remainder of the war, she became a mercenary, working for whomever would provide for her. When the war ended, she went into hiding for a while and took a new name more befitting of her new attitude.
Contemplation prefers not to fight and always tries to parley first, but she is more than capable of fighting, should the need arise. Even if forced into conflict, she will fight defensively, seeking to capture rather than destroy her opponents. She constantly calls upon intelligent foes to talk instead of fighting.

Contemplation is a female warforged that wears a deep scarlet robe. She carries no weapons.

So where would you all like to begin the game? So far we have interest in the Mournland and a desire to not do the Mournland.
Oct 26, 2024 10:27 pm
Regarding the start, I'm not familiar enough with the setting so am down for wherever.
Oct 26, 2024 10:41 pm
@ctme2000 Totally understand. Be default I'll probably start us in Sharn, but we won't stay there long. It's actually a good place to go to other places from.
Oct 26, 2024 10:44 pm
Maybe instead of picking a starting place we should pick a group patron. You all could be a research team from the University of Morgrave, or agents of the King of Breland or Prince Orgev, the last surviving noble of Cyre. Or freelance inquisitives in Sharn. Or something else.

Ancestry in Eberron is calculated to 4 positive abilities. What does that mean in the character creation? I feel as if it's a looping reference to some book, that then again references to the core book, that doesn't say

I believe that's there so you know how many abilities you could give a custom ancestry you built yourself. There are rules for that in the SWADE core book. It shouldn't affect character creation.

thank you - I have submitted my character, but I'm not finished yet - you should however be able to see what direction I'm headed, and if you spot something directly wrong, let me know

@runekyndig All I see missing really is her ancestry and which dragonmark she has.
No starting funds. Pick equipment you find reasonable. If I object to something we'll talk about it.

I think I've hit upon an awesome patron for the group. We'll be starting in Sharn, but not staying there for long. Your characters do not have to know each other from the outset (although they can). I would like you to decide what you're doing in Sharn, which is the largest, most cosmopolitan city on the continent of Khorvaire. Did you grow up there? Did you come there after the War?

Kue is no lady of courtly manners or noble birth. She is a hardened soldier of House Tharashk, a house known for its skilled trackers and prospectors. Kue’s specialty wasn’t just leading charges or swinging blades, but making sure her team was equipped, prepared, and protected against the dangers they faced. As the quartermaster of a tight-knit group of five, she earned her title not just through command, but through care and capability. In their group, the team used card names as their call signs—Jack, King, Clubs, Ace, and Nine. And Kue? She was their "Queen of Diamonds."
Her role wasn’t merely about logistics; Kue was the one who ensured the team’s magical wards were in place, their rations packed, and their route planned. When tensions ran high before a mission, Kue’s steady hand and cool demeanor became their anchor. In a world of steel and shadow, she was the subtle strategist, their hidden ace—making her the "Queen" in their deck.
The group, operating under House Tharashk, specialized in recovering stolen artifacts and securing valuable relics that belonged to the Kingdom of Cyre.
After the war ended, the group disbanded, with each member trying to carve out a new life in the shattered remains of their world. News reached her that Nine, the youngest and most reckless of their crew, had met his end in a senseless bar brawl in Sharn—a death that seemed beneath the man he once was.
Driven by a sense of duty and a desire to honor her fallen comrade, Kue made her way to Sharn. She intended to give Nine a proper burial and ensure his memory wasn't tainted by the way he died.

Looking over the Artificer some more, think I'll skip it. Was thinking it's more like the FC Tinkerer AB, which per SW Ebberon is strictly forbidden.
Think I'll focus on a Rogue/Soulknife mix. Should be submitted by tonight or tomorrow.

Looking at getting Dane Gareth transferred over to a GP sheet from Savaged.us. :) In the process these are some background points I've come up with...
* Dane excelled at his martial studies even before the Mark of Passage manifested.
* After the dragonmark manifested, Dane found himself pushed by his father to also learn the arcane arts.
* Not as exceptional as his father with the arcane, he found himself ably merging both martial and arcane into his fighting style.
* On a mission for the House, he found himself on the opposite side of the rest of his companions in returning a dragonshard. He tried to stop them, from taking it and ended up left for dead.
* When he returned, he was accused of stealing the shard and killing the others. Surprisingly, it was his uncle bringing the accusation.

Just so I'm clear, his mother was the head of the Dragonmarked House? The leader of House Orien? Kwanti d'Orien?

@Knighthawke I'm also playing a dragonmarked character, but low ranked in the house. Would it be fun/interesting if she was also of House Orien? Then we would have the prince of the house and a lowly soldier.
At the moment she is of House Tharashk (Mark of finding)

@Knighthawke House Orien is based in Aundair, in a city called Passage. No objection to you being born in Sharn. Why was your character born there and not in Passage? :-)

For the Beast Master edge, regarding the magebred template, should I just pick an animal from the FC bestiary to apply it to?

Thanks. Almost done. I've built an assassin style rogue, but what's the viability of leaning more toward an Indiana Jones rogue-ish type, in particular if I took the edges Treasure Hunter and Trap Sense edges? They sound cool thematically, but will they actually be viable in the game mechanically? Not sure how much we'll be dealing with treasure and traps.

There will be both treasure and traps. I wouldn't call this an old school dungeon crawl, but we're definitely going underground at some point.

Woo hoo, roguesies!
Sounds good, I'll stick with the assassin for now and build out into those when/if we advance.
I'll transfer him into GP and have a backstory later today.

Tapu was born and raised in Sharn, and so far, his life has been anything but remarkable. He has some talent in the magic field but soon grew bored with the tedious life of a magic apprentice and all the hours of studying just to do some minor stuff. He knew he was destined to become great at something, but he couldn’t figure out what exactly. For one, Tapu was unable to hold any apprenticeship he started. It appeared that all the masters and teachers didn’t like it if someone knew things better than they did, and in Tapu’s mind, he knew better than they did. Nor did they like his ideas for improving their ways. One thing he finally realized was that he enjoyed tampering with locks and traps, and he found that with that knowledge, he could acquire funds in a much easier way than working for it. He came into contact with a lot of adventurers over time, and he saw the treasure they acquired and saw his bright future ahead of him.

Character submitted, lemme know if I should change anything.
Kyras Blackthorne, Ky to his friends (though he has none). Born in Sharn, orphaned and penniless, he scrapped his way through, catching the eye of a famous thieves guild after he successfully swiped the pockets of its leader. With no real choice in joining, they made use of his filching fingers and smarts, working his way up from burgles to back alley bloodshed. The guild eventually loaned out his talents to assist in the Last War. It was at this time that the headaches started, culminating into a botched assassination attempt that ended with Kyras thrusting a blade made of pure energy into the General's wive's throat, instead of the man himself. He barely escaped, were it not for these new found powers.
A few years passed. He has a better grasp of his psionic abilities, and now works for the House of Vadalis. For a critical mission well done, they gift him a black jaguar, specially bred. Ky doesn't mind, feeling a kinship with the creature.
