Adventures in Middle Earth (5e D&D) - wondering...

...has anyone else bought and read the Player's Guide to Adventures in Middle Earth? I would love to play in this 5e setting, but I don't think I want to run it. I DM 1 game on here, plus 1 IRL, which is enough for me to run right now, but this book sends my imagination flying and I would eagerly jump into a game as a player.

Also wondering if our munificent GP manager is considering creating a 5e character sheet for Adventures in Middle Earth?

Thoughts, anyone?

I have bought and I was thinking about throwing a game up of it at some point but I'm waiting on the lore masters guide before I can really commit to running one

I feel the same as mcneils5. There just isn't enough info to run the game right now without a huge amount of homebrewing and/or borrowing from core 5E. I'd rather not do that if I'm going to run this honestly.

Makes sense. The Player's Guide has really sparked my imagination. I may not have always known it, but I'm sure I've wanted this book ever since I was 12 years old (a long time ago).

So I started this thread, hoping to see interest expressed from others too. So far, so good! Hopefully, the Loremaster's Guide won't be long and then you both can get a Middle Earth campaign going!

So awesome. Can't wait...

It's supposed to come out soon. I'll be keeping it in the lineup of potential games until then.

I'll be glad to look at a char sheet for this. If you like the 5e concept, The One Ring is a solid RPG designed for LotR (which this 5e setting is actually based on).

I think part of the appeal, at least for me, is that it's 5E and it won't require us to learn yet another system. I feel like I've learned a dozen different systems in the last year.

I have AiME and it looks terrific. I have played a lot of The One Ring and think the C7 team have done a great job of retooling the best aspects of that game for 5E. If the lack of adversaries is holding anyone back, people are posting homebrew orcs and trolls and whatever over at the C7 forum. That should do until the LM book comes out.

Yes, that's why it's so attractive to me too.

I've actually ran a LotR campaign using 5e (I personally just am obsessed with 5e), and it worked amazingly. Although, I did premake the characters for my friend's and homebrewed some abilities, but that wouldnt have to be the case with this. Were you wanting to play as the fellowship, or do a homebrew campaign to tie your own heroes into Middle Earth? Im very interested to join in on this if I may?

Speaking for myself, I'm just not feeling like rushing it since the Loremaster's Guide is coming soon.

I'm running a One Ring campaign right now for my first time and I'm finding it a little hard in cases to wrap my head around, but there are elements to it that I do like a lot. I've purchased the AiME player's guide and loremaster's guide (well the latter is a pre-purchase) and I'm curious about them for sure, especially since they come out of C7.

The core mechanic to TOR is pretty straightforward (difficulty is a straightforward number to set, then a feat die + skill dice). It's elements around social interactions (their effort to make custom skills valuable and mechanically defined) and whatnot I'm having a little less joy with. But I figure at least 50% of that is me learning the system. :)

Much to my amazement (disgust?), my wife reads The Silmarillion for fun about every year or so. If I knew as much about LotR as she did, I'd definitely want to run a game of it. Unfortunately, I don't think I know much more than the typical movie-goer.

Well then, the answer is simple! Buy your wife AiME for Halloween or Thanksgiving or something and let her run the game for us! :)

I wish she would! I've been trying to get her to run a game for years. If I ever manage to convince her, I'll let you know. :)

I'm currently running a TOR campaign, and have picked up AiME. There is a LOT of similarity between the two (perhaps obviously since they're both from C7). I'm not as familiar with D&D 5E / OGL as I am with FFG's system, but I'm more familiar with it than I am with TOR.

I will definitely be running an AiME campaign once the Loremaster book ships later this year. That and a TOR campaign will help me play with systems and figure out which I like better for the setting. I've found elements of TOR a little hard to wrap my head around.

I love TOR, but I agree with you that the social encounters are the most challenging mechanic. It is clunky, especially at first as you try to integrate role playing and rolling to meet the success targets. There has been a lot of figurative ink spilled about social encounters in various forums. It does become easier with time and practice.

I did some research on some of the mechanics added in AiME and it sounds really neat. I'd be really interested in playing this.

So after pondering it a bit, I actually decided to go ahead and start a text only game on Roll20 if anyone is interested. It's on Wednesday at 7pm EST.

My own game runs this Wednesday, unfortunately. :(
