The Wyrmsmoke Mountains shook with the thunder of ten thousand screaming hobgoblin soldiers. From the phalanx emerged a single champion. One by one the tribes fell silent as the warlord rose up, blue scales gleaming along his shoulders, horns swept back from his head. A hundred bright yellow banners stood beneath him, each marked with a great red hand. He stood up on a precipice and raised his arms. "I am Azarr Kul, Son of the Dragon!" the warlord bellowed. "Hear me! Tomorrow we march to war!"

Can you stop the army of the Red Hand?

This is a conversion of the original 3.5 edition module The Red Hand of Doom to 5e and the Eberron setting.

Name: Charm
Race: Human, Variant
Class: Warlock, Fathomless if we are near the ocean, maybe Undying otherwise
Role: Sweet little girl face; tentacle-happy blaster
Alignment: Chaotic Good

Appearance: Usually a pretty, sweet featured, little girl of about 10-12. When threatened, her eyes turn black, her voice drops to an almost inhuman harsh rasp, and tentacles appear attacking whatever threatens her (reflavor appearance of Eldritch Blast as well as using a lot of the tentacle spells that warlocks get).

Personality: Sweet, but immature. Wants to be cared for and liked so she tries hard to please her guardian and their friends. But her brain stopped developing when the rest of her did so she has very little thought for the long term, focusing almost always on the immediate. She loves sweets, particularly with honey to soothe her perpetually sore throat, as well as beads and bangles and bright colored clothes. She is not above stealing them if she spends all her money, then lying about it even if caught.

Backstory: Charm's father was a successful trader/merchant with his own ship (again, if you want the nautical theme, if not a caravan merchant); her mother died before she can remember. She grew up with adults and adult concerns all around her and quickly learned to manipulate them to get her way. But then the day came that she can never remember. She remembers the sky grew dark and the wind howling, then nothing. No father, no ship/caravan, no one knew her.

She made her own way as best she could until she was attacked by bandits. Then her eyes grew black, her voice strange and inhuman, and tentacles appeared out of the ground, smashing and slaying bandits. It probably would not have been enough, though, without a timely rescue by the person who later became her guardian. They came upon the scene, slew the attackers, and took her under their wings, despite having seen the other side of her nature. Now she travels with her guardian, who instinctively tries to protect her but is still an adventurer with all the danger and possibility of death that that implies.

And even if she has occasional nightmares and watches strangers carefully when out of towns, her dark passenger seems to appreciate the chance to wreck havoc on any who threaten the form it has chosen to hide within.

@badbaron That’s fantastic! We will not be near the ocean.

Shame, fathomless adds extra tentacles ;-)

Do you like rolled stats, point buy, or standard array?

I am putting a sheet together using 2024 PHB; interested to see how it works.

I'm willing to die trying to stop him.

@badbaron Point buy. If you look at the game details page you'll see the character creation notes.

You don’t have to submit a character description. Just express interest. I’m going to choose players from those who’ve posted on Wednesday 9am CST.

Posting interest, if you have room, thx.

Also interested if there is room

I'd be interested too, here's a rough character pitch.
Name: Aurora

Class: Eldritch Knight Fighter

Species: Human

Background: Criminal

Appearance: Aurora is an athletically built young woman of average height with brown hair and blue eyes. She typically dresses in simple but practical clothing or her armor. She is more often than not seen carrying a shield and quarterstaff.

Alignment: Chaotic Good

Background: An orphan for as long as she can remember, Aurora grew up on the streets, relying on the kindness of strangers and a knack for thievery to survive. She eventually got involved with the local thieves guild, her small size making her useful to them. Once she outgrew her usefulness they cast her aside.

As she grew older she began taking any odd job she could find she was pretty athletic and strong for a girl her age so she often helped out local merchants with loading and unloading goods. She always had an interest in magic and would try learn whatever scraps of magical knowledge she could get her hands on. She would ocasionally get to meet spellcasters that would pass through her home town and sometimes convince them to teach her a thing or two.

As she got older she realised her dreams of being a mage weren't going to put food on the table so she decided to become a town guard despite her criminal past. She was able to forge a nice life for herself despite her upbringing but always felt like she was destined for more. It was this feeling that eventually led to her becoming an adventurer. Sure, it will be dangerous, but nothing worth doing isn't. At least in her eyes.

Personality: Having spent most of her life alone, Aurora is slow to trust others but for the rare few people she is incredibly loyal and kind. She is quick witted and cunning. She has a strong dislike for people that pick on those who are weaker than them.

Edit: Fleshed the concept out a bit more

Update! Eberron is my favorite D&D campaign setting, and I've found an excellent guide to convert this module to that setting. So I will be running this game in Eberron.

Oh that sounds fun. It's a setting I'd always wanted to play in one day. Might adjust the character idea of the classic archer I posted in the other thread then to another class that is very high on my wishlist to play: the stealth Artificer Armorer.

Her name’s Jyn, and she grew up in the underbelly of some city, where getting by meant outsmarting everyone else in the room. The city had never been kind to her family, leaving her to fend for herself from a young age. She picked up a knack for fixing things like broken clocks, busted locks, bits of arcane tech people threw out. As a teen, she'd earned a reputation in her district as a girl who could patch up just about anything. She knew the nooks and crannies of the city's lower levels better than most, and her skill started to pull her in some interesting directions.

She started working as an apprentice under an old artificer with a fondness for rogue work. She’d modify standard armor into stealth suits. Her boss encouraged her to stick with him, but the idea of owing anyone didn’t sit well. When she was done learning, she packed her gear and hit the road.

Jyn does what she does best, taking on odd jobs for the right coin. Not one to play the hero, she takes work that pays well and keeps her moving, never sticking around long enough to get caught in anyone’s mess. The freedom suits her, and she’s in no hurry to change it.

I've also decided to bump up to 7 players. Trying to give the story a Magnificent Seven feel.
Oct 28, 2024 9:38 pm
I guess I would be the young farm boy if selected. ;-)
Oct 29, 2024 2:18 am
I am interested. Took a break from GP, but been looking to get back in. This sounds like good times.
Oct 29, 2024 2:47 am
@timplausible Good to see you back.
Oct 29, 2024 2:54 am
I'm interested as well, though I should be upfront and say while I've played some 5e before, I'm new to Eberron. I think I'd play a 2024 Fighter if selected since they're looking pretty solid now.
Oct 29, 2024 1:16 pm
I want to let everyone know that in shifting this story to Eberron there will be some big changes to the plot. You will still be facing a massive horde of goblinoids. There will be some big differences from the original adventure.
Oct 29, 2024 1:47 pm
One of the changes I'm going to make is to stretch this story all the way from 5th to 20th level.
Oct 29, 2024 2:39 pm
I want to at least throw my hat in the ring. I love me some Eberron. Always looking for an excuse to play a Warforged. Might go with a Fighter this time, Warforged Artificers are a ton of fun but there's something to be said for switching it up.
Oct 29, 2024 2:54 pm
I see that you have more than 7 but wanted to throw my hat in the ring as well. I was thinking of sending in a character design but thought I'd wait to see what the party is comprised of
