Act One - All Quiet?

It's nighttime again in Port Brokentower, and the bustling population fills the inns, taverns, and bars. Out in the street it's brutally cold. The winter has been harsh. But inside Ragnar's, it's somehow quite warm.

It's absolutely packed full of people tonight. There are a good few regulars you recognize, but you haven't had time for the usual banter. Normally you'd be running around taking orders and giving out drinks, food, and the like, but for right now you've got a chance to relax. The lanterns have been turned down for the band to play a special number.

The band is all human. It's rare to find good musicians these days, and you know Ragnar pays them well. They're very good, for mere men. The number they play tonight is new, at least you've never heard it. It starts off with a positively haunting fiddle melody, then joined by the flutist, then the lutist, then the drummer. It's slow and sad, and it reminds you in places of elven dirges. It feels fitting for winter. The crowd is positively enraptured, you see a burly young dwarf shedding a tear in one corner, and by the ending crescendo much of the taproom is on their feet.

Where did Yeona watch that from? What was she doing/thinking?

Yeona sighs pensively, watching from the corner of the stage as she embraces the sound of music whilst keeping discretion. The tune rings deep within her - the fleeting nature of human lives always brought about a sense of novelty to their tunes. Elven music evolves much more gradually, a single note in a dirge is considered a feat in of itself. Nevertheless, the thought of underwater calls of sea-elven horns continues the never-ending stream of homesickness within Yeona's heart. On her days off, she often sits by the sea, listening to the sound of waves crash against the shore.

She wonders where the musicians are from, and more importantly, where they're headed. Her thoughts wander further, mimicking the emotions of the music - did their tune speak from their own pain? Either way, Yeona hears their inner truth, feeling her own reverberate in kind.

You're jolted from your thoughts as one of your fellow waiters, Ernesto, seems to have crept up on you. He says to you,
"Too much dreaming, Yeona. I would not expect an elf like you to be so sentimental about music(He says that word funny. And a lot of words, being a Donistairian). Aren't you people all about practicality and magic and that sort of nonsense?"

Yeona flinches, caught off guard equally from Ernesto's intrusion and his presumptions. 'It's true that elves are the practical kind, but...' she gestures at the band, '...music bends and weaves the flow of magic through harmony. It can make one slumber, fall in love, cry, and so much more.'

She prods the base of his chin with her a finger, 'you also taking a break or do you need my help with something? Where'd we get the band in from, anyway?'

He says,
"Oh, they're from all over. And speaking of over, so is your break."

As he says that he points over to the bar where you can see Pallis, the half-elf bartender, has a tray of drinks for one of your tables.

Ernesto then says in a lower tone, "Be careful, by the way, I hear we're supposed to have some bad weather tonight," before shuffling off with a tray of his own into the usual din of the taproom
