Character Creation

Standard character creation as per the Player's Survival Guide. Also, each PC should have a connection to the station that includes a reason to be invited to and attend the Nakatomi Christmas Eve party. Larger, more powerful weapons rolled in loadout will be in lockup in station security. Armor will be wherever the PC is staying on the station (likely either the Living Quarters or the Hardlight Hotel).

My primary concept is a scientist who's attending the event in hopes of rubbing shoulders with a sponsor for her studies.

With that said, I'd like to know if there are any skills that you feel won't come up in this game, @Redcroc. I am considering Art, Mysticism, Xenoesotericism for my character.

I am new to this system, so I will get started on the pdf.

I don't have a concept yet - except for the obvious one inspired by the movie, but we could end up with a lot of tough, swearing cops with marital problems if everyone does that :)

I will read the pdf and see what I come up with. And maybe watch the movie again. :)

Am I on the right track if I assume that the setting aesthetics are similar to those of Alien?

2d10 is equal to d100, if you roll a 10 on the first dice, treat it as 0.

Nevermind, I believe it means you roll 1d100 during the game, but your stat value is 2d10+25.

We are rolling stats in order, right? So you can't switch strength and intellect for instance?

I have two tentative concepts so far:

- Young, curious, eager, idealistic reporter sniffing around after a lead. Definitely not as annoying as the TV guy from the movie.

- A former security android repurposed for some other job (janitor, waiter). When bad things happen, old programming kicks in

@testlum - I think any of those you mention could fit into the mystery at the heart of the module. The big organization on Hardlight Station is Healthtek AG and they would be interested in a scientist with any of those specialties. As far as other skills, the following would be very hard to fit into this module and so very unlikely to come up in any way: wilderness survival, AI, and hyperspace. A few others would probably only give flavor text insight but could still be a bit relevant.

Alien is a good reference for the aesthetic of the setting.

@akkarin and @runestone There is also a system explanation with videos here that can help with learning the system.

Please do all dice rolling in the forum using the GP dice roller. You can add dice rolls below where type posts. There is a guide for doing so here if you have questions on how to do the rolls.

I am fine with people rolling and assigning stats to fit a character concept they want to play!

I'm still not sure about my concept. I'll roll stats in order and see if that helps me decide (but I may still choose to rearrange them later).

Edit: Pretty middle of the road. I will switch the Fear and Body saves and try to build an intrepid reporter.

Yeah, "create character". You will be able to edit it further via the "characters" tab in the top menu -- just be sure to click on the character's name here

The pencil icon allows you to edit the sheet format itself, rather than fill in details for the existing sheet.

and even more questions! Are we spending credits for equipment before the start, or they are for in-game trading? And can I sell a flamethrower, and buy, for example, a shotgun?

I believe the rank/level is 0. I assume it's the same as the high-score mentioned in the rules.

Skill training takes a long time and happens between sessions, so it should not be relevant for this one-off.

yeah, I've guessed the same mostly. The question with credits stands, though.

Well, I've submitted a character--maybe there will be some minor equipment changes after credit system clarification.

The concept is a relatively young and problematic, not-so-successful marine who likes to talk about "his former military achievements during special operations," but his stories can sound a little bit doubtful. Explosive, hot-tempered, "say first, then think."

Sorry about the confusion with the character sheet. I pulled it from the GamersPlane trove so it was created by someone else. It seems like yall figured it out, but the Stat/Skill sections are kind of confusing and IMO unnecessary. After this game, I will probably make an updated version based on the feedback here to improve clarity.

@akkarin - I'll let anyone that wants to spend starting credits before the adventure do that. There will be no opportunity to do it once the adventure starts. As far as swapping gear from loadouts, I'll let anyone swap an item for another item of lower cost. As a survival horror game, I want to maintain the feeling of scarcity and making use of what is available to generate hard decisions.

Also, while the stats might feel low/bad, they dont represent natural abilities but rather how a character performs on the worst day of their lives. And failing a roll will not necessarily mean you fail to do what you want, but could mean you do what you want but with negative consequences.

Yep, since this is in the realm of OSR, I expect that rolling dice is the last resort - if you can solve something without rolling, that's usually the better option.

I've tailored my character sheet somewhat (removed unused rank and level sections for one thing), let me know if you want that version.

@Dmbrainiac Let me know if you have any questions or need clarification about anything. Android are a lot more open ended as far as details on how they function and their capabilities (i.e. if they need to breath air or not, etc) and you can decide a lot of them based on how you want your character.

@testlum You have a lot! The module is pretty self contained so the rest of the galaxy is mostly undefined outside of a few aspects. If you tell me what you were thinking for theTarabasii, I will see if they could be tied into the module or left more as background info. Either way, Geneva will have an opportunity to advance her goal of research funding through the adventure.

@akkarin Do you think James is working for station security? Or is he on vacation inbetween contracts? Do you think he would want to join up with the Blackshield Mercenary Company? Or does he have secrer dreams of being a hero?

1. They're an extinct species and culture.

2. The art is etched as murals on walls, but physical contact conveys much deeper meaning.

3. Geneva has only ever read of and seen pictures of Tarabasii works.

You decide not to go with the combat shotgun instead? If you want to switch to loadout #2 that includes a shotgun, I'll let you do that. You can also still roll for credits and buy things piecemeal if you want

Yes, I'll stick to flamethrower. I don't really like it thematically, but it seems to be the second-best weapon in the game, all the others are much worse. James is just a casual flamethrower user, nevermind him, it SPARKS his character.

That sounds good! Having overlapping skills isn't the worst thing, especially stuff like hacking, but I like the new skills too. Zoology is unlikely to come up mechanically, but it fits well with the character! And chemistry could certainly come up in several instances.
