I tend to be the bane of any game I join anyway. I have to say, I've thoroughly enjoyed the world that you've got built and it's a shame that we won't get to explore it further. I'm sorry that it's going to stop, but it was great while it lasted. Maybe I'll see some of you in another game, but...
You were an absolute blast to have in the game. No worries. And if I run a game in this world again, I'll see what each of you are doing, and if you are interested in it. Your characters would be welcome to return.
As far as spoilers, I'll share a couple, and answer any questions you have. My intent was that the City of Shadow was once the city of Crucible, a Dwarven home, back when they lived that deep in the Underworld. The Shadowkin were actually Dwarves that had been corrupted by the bones of the gigantic monstrosity you saw.
This was barely referenced when Neph was asked if she'd seen Dwarves before, and she looked at Baric and said:
"I don't really know about him. He's short, like the Shadowkin."
There was a lot that could be done in the city, but the main goal would've been to discover this information, and to find a way to end this bone curse (or handle it in whatever way you discovered yourselves). The dwarves wouldn't be restored, but they would die or become uselessly disorganized and leave Neph's people alone. The disruption of the barrier was also being caused by some magic formed out of the bones of this beast, which caused for a magical resonance that shattered it. Hence why the pillars that formed the barrier were vibrating. The machinations you'd just found could've been employed to help you rid Crucible of the Shadowkin menace, but if they found out the Shadowkin were actually their very own dwarven kin (once, a long time ago), they probably would've turned on you without proper persuasion to do otherwise. The machinations had actually been imprisoned in the statues when the Dwarves intended on abandoning the city, but as the Shadowkin mined the Hall of Gems for, well, its gems, they accidentally released the machines and had to flee.
Upon returning to the surface, a war was beginning between The Winter Court and the Valkarian Empire, and Bracklewhyte would've been the first casualty. The corrupt mayor of Bracklewhyte would've handed the city over to Lord Winter almost instantly, and the PCs would've returned to the Rift to find it boarded up once more. Once finding a way out, they would've found that Callie and many other notable people they had met had been imprisoned by the Winter Court soldiers. That would've been a whole 'nother mess to fix, if they wanted. Alternatively, the Winter Court would have also been interested in finding artifacts beneath the surface, and they would have offered funding for continued exploration, perhaps even in return for releasing their friends.
Those were the two big events that I had planned. A lot of PC stuff was going to happen for some of you inside Crucible, and I had big plans that were intended a long way down the road, but I'd rather not spoil those. Mostly there'd be a lot of discovery about the origins of the world, the Exhumed, etc.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or PM, and I'd be happy to answer.
But absolutely
no apologies are necessary. You guys were a really fun group to play with. I feel bad seeing the sad responses. I was just worried about it slowing down and thinking people weren't having fun, and I worried about sounding like a broken record asking if everyone was still having a good time. I'll still run more games, and eventually I'll run more games in Auwra, too. Thanks :)
