The Slaughter of Shrike Forest

In an act of desperation, the first few Orcs are sent against an overwhelming Styrovite force. The Styrovites make camp in the gloomy depths of the Shrike forest. The Orcs strike at night, hoping surprise and shock will make up for their lack of numbers, arms, and experience.

Pick any two Trait scores to serve as a stratagem, but those scores can never be used together as a stratagem again. Ex. If we choose to use Numbers + Loyalty as this chapter's stratagem, we can no longer use N + L together as a future stratagem.

Roll 1d6+Stratagem. On a total of 5 or higher, Lannia is victorious.

Victory
On a victory, the Orc ambush is terrifying and unexpected. Styrovite soldiers break and flee in terror. The Orcs run them down, and the creeks of Shrike Forest run red with Styrovite blood.
Pick three Warps.

Defeat
On a defeat, the Orcs are too few and too new to war. They are easily outnumbered and methodically slain by the disciplined invaders. The Styrovites will be ready for the next wave of Orcs.
Pick two Warps.

If any score reaches -8, -4, 4 or 8 this chapter, we will create one new custom the Orcs have begun that sets them apart from Lannians.

Available Warps
Orcs can fly into a battle rage. +1 Brute.
Orcs have natural weapons. Describe them. +1 Brute.
Orcs are hard to kill. +1 Numbers.
Orcs can march without tiring and survive off scraps that would make a Lannian sick. +1 Numbers.
Orcs can see by night. +1 Clever

Shifts
The Council may do any or all of these at the end of each chapter starting with Chapter 3, but each only once per chapter:

Make the Orcs larger. Move them up the size scale* by one. +1 Brute. -1 Numbers.
Make the Orcs smaller. Move them down the size scale by one. -1 Brute. +1 Numbers.
Indoctrinate the Orcs. Write one belief you give them. +1 Loyalty. -1 Clever.
Educate the Orcs. Write one skill they learn. -1 Loyalty. +1 Clever.

*Size scale, smallest to largest:
Green Goo
Gremlins
Goblins
Diminuitive
Stunted
Lannian
Burly
Hulking
Ogres
Trolls
Giants

"Councilors, the Styrovite armies grow bold with their mounting victories. Our newly born orcs have little chance of victory at this stage, but if we send all the ones we have created thus far to attack in the ambush, we will at least have a chance to test their loyalty. If the orcs are lucky, the shock of the ambush will carry them to victory and begin turning the tides of the war. And while failure is much more likely since they are attacking a superior force of combat tested veterans, we will at least see what areas they are lacking in."

"Would you sacrifice everything we have worked for so early in the war?" Velledaine asks, arching an eyebrow. "If all our orcs are wiped out in their first sortie, then we will have nothing to show for our efforts so far. Better to keep some in reserve and send only the strongest, most loyal of our forces. Though few in number, their strength may just be enough to overwhelm the unsuspecting Styrovites."

"Counsellors, I agree with our Dread General that even a defeat in a battle will demonstrate to the accursed Styrovites that winning the war will not be the stroll along the shore they had expected. But then, counsellor Velledaine is hardly wrong to suggest that we do not over commit. I don't think there is any great divergence of views in this chamber, just a matter of emphasis. My vision is for an army whose Battle Rage makes the very heavens quake and whose numbers cause our enemies hearts to sink into their bowels. We have some loyalty in these, are re-born creatures. Let us test this quality in battle before over-commiting at this time. I urge you to choose rage and superior numbers as the opening battle gambit"

Melmoth's gesticulates towards the sky, fist's clenched, and baritone voice raised to a terrible, tremuous, timbre as he finishes his appeal to the chamber.

"Venerable Sages, I've spent the night in tasseographic meditations, and our future reads as murky as the wet leaves themselves. No matter our choice today, we inevitably limit our choices for tomorrow and beyond. To Lord Perikles' point: all arguments made thus far are valid, cogent and complete in understanding of the risks (and rewards) involved. Ultimately, I share the Librarian's vision of growing a force so filled with rage that our opponents cannot but tremble in fear before them, and may the Goddess help this Council maintain control.

I am, however, amenable to the Dread General's proposition that for this first engagement we send forth the most loyal of our creations, in whatever slim numbers they may be. We can then bide time to grow our forces' more brutish tendencies. We can risk this battle, but not the war. "

Weellllll, there's that. :) Bloody digital dice...
"Councilors, I'm certain you share my disappointment at the dismal showing of our battle force. But not all is lost. We have enough magic in reserve to warp our creations in two of the following ways:

Ch. 3 Warps - Choose 2 Multi Public

May our magics serve us and Lannia in the utmost."

"I trust my preferences come as no surprise for they align well with the vision to create creatures of unadulterated fury. Should that vision come to fruition, the Styrovites will surely be crushed underfoot."
Dec 31, 2024 3:35 pm
"I would that we had chosen otherwise, as you all know. This defeat was a step backwards, but I urge the council to re-consider my argument before the Skirmish at Shrike Forest; it is brutality we need, but combined and balanced with numbers of combatants. We must replace our losses whilst contiuning to conjure and nurture battle rage."
Dec 31, 2024 4:30 pm
"I concur, Lord Melmoth. The orcs must be stronger and tougher to survive against the Styrovite forces. Let us focus our magic to those ends."
Dec 31, 2024 4:58 pm
"While the results are disappointing, they were not unpredictable at this stage.

I concur that granting the orcs the ability to enter a battle rage would greatly improve their performance in future engagements. However, the night strike was a good strategy despite the failure of the attack. Perhaps if we made it so the orcs could see in the dark, we could make this a more viable tactic in the future.

But as you say fellow councilors, hardening the orcs against wounds and more tightly tethering their life essences to their physical bodies can only improve their combat performance. "
Dec 31, 2024 5:58 pm
"The counsel must pay heed to the Dread General; the ability to strike in the dark is a most valuable one. However, we will also beneift from the enemy being able to gaze at our terrible creations in their battle rage - it will strike fear into every fibre of their beings... one step at a time, fellow counsellors, one battle at a time. Let us prevail in our next encounter!"
Dec 31, 2024 8:00 pm
"Let us, and Lannia, prevail indeed! Do any of the Council heretofore desire to alter the size of future Orcs or provide them any education or indoctrination? I myself am satisfied with our current progress (despite our recent loss)."

"It could benefit the orcs to be larger and therefore more terrifying in battle. However, this would likely reduce the number of successful conversions from female citizens to orcs, so I will defer to my other councilors thoughts on this matter if they think this unwise."
Jan 2, 2025 11:04 am
"The loss in potential numbers of new soldiers would worry me also, Dread General. I would be disinclined to make any shift in our production process at this time."
Jan 2, 2025 1:15 pm
"Let us maintain their original size for the time being."

So ends Chapter 3. I hope you all are enjoying it! You're bringing an engaging depth to your character decisions that wholly fascinates me - and these are substantive moral choices, cloaked in this dark fantasy veneer. Fascinating. I'll get the Orc status post updated now and Chapter 4 posted, if not this morning, sometime today.
