The Rescue at Cynoceph

Styrovite cavalry carries off the royal family of Lannia. The Orcs have one chance to head them off at the small village of Cynoceph and rescue the royals.

Pick any two Trait scores to serve as a stratagem, but those scores can never be used together as a stratagem again. Ex. If we choose to use Numbers + Loyalty as this chapter's stratagem, we can no longer use N + L together as a future stratagem.

Roll 1d6+Stratagem. On a total of 7 or higher, Lannia is victorious.

Victory
On a victory, enough Orcs are in the area to surround the Styrovites. After a tense standoff, the royals are rescued unharmed. From now on, the Council of Sages has the backing of the Crown no matter what they do.
Pick three Warps.

Defeat
On a defeat, Orc rescuers arrive with little time to spare. After a tense standoff, the Styrovites panic and the royals are slain. The remaining line of succession is murky. Multiple claimants fight for the throne of Lannia even as the country burns.
Pick two Warps.
If the Orcs were bound in supernatural loyalty to a member of the monarchy, -2 Loyalty.

If any score reaches -8, -4, +4, or +8 this chapter, we will create one new custom the Orcs have begun that sets them apart from Lannians.

Available Warps
Orcs are taught the sorcery needed to create more orcs. +2 Numbers. -1 Loyalty.
Orcs can have children with each other. At least some grow into adult warriors at an incredibly fast speed. +1 Numbers.
Orcs can have children with each other. At least some grow and mature at around the same speed as Lannians. +1 Brute.
Orcs and Lannians can have half-Orc children. +1 Loyalty.
Orcs begin to crave the flesh of their enemies. +1 Brute.

Shifts
The Council may do any or all of these at the end of each chapter starting with Chapter 3, but each only once per chapter:

Make the Orcs larger. Move them up the size scale* by one. +1 Brute. -1 Numbers.
Make the Orcs smaller. Move them down the size scale by one. -1 Brute. +1 Numbers.
Indoctrinate the Orcs. Write one belief you give them. +1 Loyalty. -1 Clever.
Educate the Orcs. Write one skill they learn. -1 Loyalty. +1 Clever.

*Size scale, smallest to larges. Bold = Current size:

Velledaine eyes Selixa. "Do you see now why it would have been a bad idea to bind the orcs' loyalty to the king? Even if he does not survive this, our soldiers will remain under our control."

She turns to the other sages. "Councilors, I suggest sending out all of our strongest warriors to attempt to recover the royal family. We must strike with overwhelming force or risk their deaths."
Jan 2, 2025 9:34 pm
Selixa accepts Velledaine's reproach. "Yes, it would have been calamitous for us should our Orcs fail to rescue the royal court. But, please, let us not fail. Council, I too recommend sending a large brigade of our strongest Orcs to Cynoceph. Our King and his family are counting on us and the moon foretells of chaos if we do not deliver."

Sensing the potential for a fault line to open between the High King's Witch and the New Druid of the Deep Woods, Melmoth raises both hands in a pliant gesture and says, "Counsellors, now is our moment of truth, we must strike the enemy with a brutal response to this outrage. But win or lose, do not despair! Lannia is not one man, nor one family, but everyone who carries the love of our nation in their hearts. If the King falls, we will cry, 'the King is Dead, Long Live the Counsel of Lannia'. Lannia is not the King, the King is Lannia. Nonetheless, the High King is the embodiment of our nation and they, the filth that is the Styrovite know this! So, yes, I wholeheartedly concur with my wise brothers and sisters of this august counsel - let us raise our war horde in both number and righteous rage!"

Semiyon steeples his gauntleted fingers before his face mask and exhales a deep breath that sounds like cold wind echoing through a crypt. "While I care little for which noble sits atop the throne and calls themselves regent, the loss of such a powerful symbol for Lannia would indeed be a great blow to the war effort. Not to mention the likelihood of civil war breaking out as the king's bastards and advisors squabble for the crown, heedless of the danger posed by the Styrovites.

Our warriors grow in savagery thanks to our efforts and this should serve us well in this rescue engagement. But sheer numbers will only delay our forces as they pursue the Styrovite cavalry force and jeopardize the safety of the king. Instead, let us send a smaller contingent of those orcs most loyal to Lannia. Their fervor for our motherland will help them strike fast and true against the kidnappers."

"Loyalty is a lie, Dread General! The only loyalty is self-interest. This council's self-interest ought to coincide with Lannia's, since we ARE Lannia in absentia, rex!", Melmoth pauses for effect before continuing, "Your argument does not persuade me, at least"

"I'm sure the King appreciates the Council's swift decision on this matter. I hope our magic stands strong."

Selixa's piercing eyes settle on each Councilor in turn.

"We cannot fail."

@sonofirony, let that d6 fly!

Semiyon turns to Lord Perikles, embers flare momentarily from the eye slits in the face mask.

"My loyalty is to the strength of our people, Lord Melmoth. I am here on this council as I believe this is the best path towards future strength for Lannia." The embers fade back down. "But I see the will of the council has made up its mind for how to respond to the abduction of the king. And I am content to not force my own opinions on the matter. " The Dread General stands and exits the chambers, planning to return for the next session.

"Let the rescue mission commence!"

"Well, Selixa, I can make some space for you in the Deep Woods if you wish to escape the anarchy that lies ahead in your city," Velledaine says, hiding a smirk. "In the meantime, I agree. The orcs are not savage enough to scare our enemies into submission. Perhaps we instill in them a new hunger? And we allow for the crossbreeding of man and orc. Perhaps the spawn will surpass the progenitors."
Jan 5, 2025 2:17 am
"My heart aches for our fallen monarch and his line, yet we must remain resolute. Lannia will survive, and she shall prosper thanks to the children that this council is parent too! We shall prevail!"
Jan 5, 2025 4:40 am
OOC:
Well at least if we lose, we know it is due to the bad dice roller, not poor decisions... :-\
"Yet again, a disastrous but predictable outcome. Velledaine has the right of it. We must make the orcs stronger and more savage. Having them hunger for the flesh of their enemies will drive their battle fury as well as sustain them in the field as our ability to resupply them diminishes.

However, I would advise we also warp them to procreate with each other rather than interbreeding with Lannian citizens. As this war continues to grind away our populace, we need to reserve as many Lannians as we can for conversion into orcs. And allowing orcs to breed amongst themselves will further harden them as a battle force by increasing their sheer ferocity and strengthening their identity as a self-contained fighting force."
Jan 5, 2025 12:23 pm
"My Lord Dread General, I assure you of my good will, and I fear in my clumsy senility I have run the risk of offending you although that was never my intention. Running that risk once more, I must share the reasons why I believe having the Orcs inter-breed is not, in my opinion, our surest path to success. To start with, we have chosen to fabricate Orcs with only a single gender, so at the very least, your proposal would require either a reversal of the council's decision, or else the innovation of a parthenogenetic technology we do not currently possess. Furthermore, in my vision, our beloved Orc maidens will sate their desire on those they conquer. By these means, and over time - maybe a generation or two, the distinction between Styrovite and Orc will begin to diminish. We will in effect, be breeding the Styrovite out of existence without having to resort to genocide. For these reasons, my Lord, I commend Velldaine's proposal to you, unamended"

After his brief speech, Melmoth bows his head towards the Dread General as a sign of humility and respect.
Jan 5, 2025 4:57 pm
"And does the Council have any interest in shifting the size of our Orcs, educating them, or instilling any new beliefs amongst them? At this time, I do not have a strong preference for such manipulations."
Jan 5, 2025 5:57 pm
"Let us at least secure a single victory first," Velledaine says with a sigh.
Jan 6, 2025 1:40 am
"I would advocate increasing their size and educating the orcs so that they might be more capable independent fighting forces, but I sense the council is against me still, so I defer to the majority rule."
