[Interest Check] Eternal Lies / Cthulhu Year Zero

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

I’m considering running an epic Lovecraftian campaign, Eternal Lies, using a system of my own devising based on the Year Zero engine. There’s a link to the rules document here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aNKHYgfAtqfJLmC51WrXQ6_8AIx78C2BAJyXgdwqqpo/edit?usp=sharing so you can have a look. Consider this an interest check, which may turn into a recruitment thread if there is any interest. I’ve run several face to face games using this system (or at least the first version of it - this one has some changes) and in PBP, including a couple of 2 year-long games.

The campaign itself is a world-spanning adventure, similar to more well-known epics such as Masks of Nyarlathotep and Shadows of Yog Sothoth. It’s not quite pulp (and the rules reflect that), though not quite purist Lovecraftian either (though Sanity and Health are both frail enough that there will be casualties of one or the other, or both), and the characters may, if they reach the end, be able to save the world from catastrophe, rather than simply observe as it ends in cataclysm. Combat is likely at various points, though not the main focus, and can be deadly, so gung-ho gun bunnies and murder hobos are not likely to last long. Investigation, research, and social encounters play a large part, getting clues and interviewing various people to find out what’s going on, and working out what leads to follow next, etc. If you’re after a game where you can roleplay to your heart’s content, then this may be for you.

https://i.ibb.co/D9BCghT/Eternal-Lies-cover-copy.jpg

I won’t say much about the plot, and I’d prefer players who haven’t read or played the campaign before, but players new and old to Lovecraftian games are welcome, as will players familiar or not with the Year Zero mechanic (which is a very simple system - basically, roll some D6s, and look for 6s). It does involve a global investigation that takes you to various countries and continents, and where the environment itself can pose a threat at times, on the trail of a cult that carried out a ritual over a decade ago that wasn’t entirely successful, but that which left something behind.

There are elements that could come with content warnings, including mental instability, body horror, some gore, and other such elements and phobias, so naturally Gaming Consent and X-Cards will both be on the table. Note that some parts (body horror and mental instability in particular) come with the territory of Lovecraftian games, so if you have concerns about these in particular, please let me know, and I will try to make changes where possible, but some elements are intrinsic to the plot and would be more difficult to change. We can discuss privately if you do have any concerns.

Sex and torture in particular tend to be very much off screen; the former may be used in some limited places in description, but players will not be expected to take any part in those proceedings - more to present a tableau or to indicate previous acts, and will not be pruriently described. Torture is something that marks pure evil in my games, so while an NPC may inflict some torture (again, not overtly described in detail), players who feel the need to use torture will rapidly see their own sanity declining at a rate of knots.

https://i.ibb.co/Hg0kgPX/Prop-The-Mouth.jpg

I particularly welcome players and characters who are 2SLGBTQ+ or from other marginalised groups. Almost all of my gaming has been with mixed groups of men and women, and I would prefer that to continue.

Please note that some of the skills listed have been given "evocative" names that are typical of the era (early 20th C) and that are not used in our age because of their ethnocentric bias. This is not intended to offend, and if anyone does take issue with them, I am happy to change them to something less offensive. Similarly, the era portrayed was one of general racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia, amongst others (not to say that our modern era is perfect in any way), and while occasionally something of this sort might crop up from an NPC or situation (depending on initial conversations about what the group is comfortable with, of course), it will almost always signify that the person is a bad guy. Racism, sexism, homo- and transphobia from players will not be tolerated. This game is meant to encourage players of all genders, races, and sexualities to play and enjoy. If any aspect of this game is offensive or problematic, please bring it to my attention and I will strive to ameliorate the situation. While the subject matter of this game is horror-based, players should always feel comfortable (even though their characters might not feel so). It should go without saying that all players should feel comfortable at the (virtual) table, and any obstacles to that enjoyment should be dealt with immediately and effectively.

This is likely to be a long-term game, probably on the scale of several years in real life to play through in its entirety, so I am looking for people that would hopefully be able to commit for quite a while. I would prefer posts 2-3 times a week, though I am online every day usually, and can reply throughout the day as needed, with the possible exception of weekends when I post far less frequently. This is something that we can discuss as a group though if I get any interest. I am looking for 3-5 players who can work well together - while you may decide amongst yourselves to have tension between characters, there should be none between players.

If you are interested, please let me know here. I would prefer if you don’t create characters just yet - I’d prefer to do that as a group - but feel free to discuss the type of character you would like (possibly which group you see your character coming from) so that others and I get an idea of what you’re looking for in the game. Perhaps give some indication of your experience with Lovecraftian games (and RPGs in general), though I should note I’m happy to take on noobs to the site (I’m still a noob here myself) as well as veterans. I’d also prefer if we could all give a bit of a bio of ourselves too, though don’t feel that you have to do so if it makes you uncomfortable to give out any personal information. - this is entirely intended to create a close knit group if possible.

https://i.ibb.co/CsYB7Mc/Picture1.jpg

I’ll go first - my name is Nick (He/Him, cishet male, mid-50s), and I’ve been roleplaying since the early 80s, and playing and GMing Lovecraftian games since the early to mid 80s, cutting my teeth on the first edition of Call of Cthulhu, and since playing several other such games, including Trail of Cthulhu, tremulous, and Delta Green. I started PBPing back in the late 90s on various fora and through email, and I have run several long-lasting epic campaigns both in face to face and PBP settings. I tend to prefer games where investigation, uncovering secrets, and discovering plot via puzzles, handouts, and clues are pivotal. I prefer simpler games such as Year Zero games, PbtA games, and OSR and more narrative games in general.

Outside of gaming, when I work it’s as an adjunct professor, teaching medieval history with a focus on monasticism, revolts and rebellions, heretics, and subaltern and liminal groups. I also have an interest in First Nations religious traditions, and 19th C European social and political history. I’m originally British (Yorkshire and Scottish), though I currently live in Toronto, Canada where my wife and I settled after I completed my PhD, and after a few years in Phoenix, Arizona. In terms of music, I like punk and indie stuff mostly, though with fairly eclectic tastes. My favourite bands at the moment are Pixies, PJ Harvey, Half Man Half Biscuit, The Rebel Spell, and Billy Bragg. Finally, and most importantly, my favourite cheese is Cambozola (especially with banana in a butty), though I’ve more recently been impressed with UmYum vegan za’atar and spices cashew cheese.

So, to reiterate - if you are interested please post with a little about yourself, your posting style and rate and what you seek from a game, and if comfortable, if you have any content you would prefer to avoid (you can post this as a spoiler if you prefer, or PM me directly), what sort of character you’d like to play from those on offer in the rules document, and how you see your character in fairly broad terms.

Also, if anyone knows their way around creating custom character sheets here, please get in touch. :)

Very interested! Frequent CoC player / GM since 1st edition, but I haven't heard of this campaign. I love the Lovecraftian canon, and am also a fan of the Year Zero engine games (played Vaesen, Walking Dead, and some Year Zero Mini games).

As far as a little bio is concerned, how about my 'Ask me anything' thread here on Gamersplane, that we ran a while back? 😎 Is that cheating?

I am very intrigued by the subject matter and your rules hack. I can post as often as needed and am good for the long haul. I am already in one Year Zero game, a CoC game and an Eldritch Hack game. I am also about to start running a Tiny D6 Cthulhu game. Can you tell I love horror?

Looking through your rules I'd be happy playing a field Researcher but also quite a few others stood out.

Like Dr_B I too have an Ask Me Anything and I am also a fan of Pixies and PJ Harvey!

Interesting subjects you teach!

I am interested. I have played very few Lovecraftian roleplaying games, but lots and lots of other rpgs, as well as a good amount of Lovecraftian board games. I have limited experience with Year Zero games, but I did just buy a Humble Bundle of YZE games because I want to get more into them.

I've recently been reading all of Lovecraft's short stories in chronological order (and reading analyses of each as I finish them). I'm a few stories past Call of Cthulhu itself.

I do not have an ask-me-anything thread to link to. I tend to be somewhat reserved about the personal details I post. But at a top-level, I am also a 50-something cishet male who has been playing rpgs since the 80s. My primary rpg has been D&D. I tried out a bunch of different games during the 90s rpg-boom, but me and my gang came back to D&D in the 00s. I'm not quite a forever DM, but almost. I live in the mid-atlantic U.S. (it's not my fault!) and work in a science & engineering field. The Venn diagram of our musical tastes probably has a lot of overlap. I'm pretty solidly a sci-fi geek. My favorite cheese is very sharp cheddar. Boring, I know. But the stomach wants what the stomach wants.

I have a question: what made you decide to brew up a Year Zero game as opposed to using one of the existing Lovecraftian games?
Jan 16, 2025 1:22 am
Wanted to post interest earlier after your post in our other game, but... y'know, work.

Let me see... I'm a casual fan of Lovecraft/Eldritch Horror. I also thoroughly enjoy the YZE. Unfortunately, as is often the case with PbP, most of the YZE games I've.played in were either very short one shots, or died off. But I'm eager to play it more.

Speaking of PbP games, I tend to be here pretty consistantly. I'd be lying if I said some work days weren't busier than others, but as a general rule I'm usually here daily. Both the pace and duration would be fine for me.

My first real RPG was the old Marvel Superheroes system (aka the FASERIP System), followed by TMNT. Got into D&D with AD&D/2E. Played Kult (I think it was 2E) in the late 90s with Marines, so trust me when I say I don't have lines or veils or X cards or anything of the sort. (I do my best to abide by any other folks have though.) Do a lot of both old and new WoD, some RoleMaster (a good friend was a contributor to ICE back in the day, before I met him, so he still loves the game), WEG version of Star Wars, and so on.

If my gaming list left you guessing I'm not a kid -- you're right. Mid 40s, Pacific Northwest region of the US is home. Currently working for a friend who has a small business as a general contractor, but I've done plenty in my years -- NBC Defense in the Marines, 14 years in kitchens, 6 years as a bouncer and later ass't. manager of a club, mover, Certified Medical Assistant in a Cardiology office, and now construction. Also, single dad (my son is almost 19 now) and total homebody.

As for the most important question: I don't have a set favorite cheese. It entirely depends what I'm doing with it. What I put on a burger isn't what I'd pair with pasta... and even then, not all pastas are the same.

Excellent, thanks so far for the interest!

Answering / commenting on these two together: Yes, AMAs do count (and not as cheating)! Though they do skip the important question of favourite cheese...

Being a Pixies and PJ Harvey fan certainly does count in your favour too. For another game, every post I made linked to a different PJ Harvey song that was relevant (Meet Ze Monsta was reserved for the big bad), and I ran another campaign where every section was named after a different Pixies song (One player even picked up that when they met an NPC called Edwyn, whose name was often shortened to Ed, that he wasn't long for the world).

As to the subjects I teach - often it's just Intro to Medieval Europe and occasionally History of the Americas (always fun when you're teaching Canadians and you're English), but I do occasionally get to flex my monastic brainparts and teach on that subject. :)

No worries about being reserved - like I said, we all have different comfort levels, so stick to your own and that's good enough for me. I like a nice sharp cheddar too, especially a really aged one that has cheesy crystals in it.

And good question! Some, like tremulous, are a bit more short term-based and have a particular setting in mind that's more small town, and I wanted something world-spanning. While Call of Cthulhu and Trail of Cthulhu both cover tham there's generally a bit more back and forth involved than I like for PBP games, and CoC in particular I find can get bogged down a little, and often has skills where chances of success are quite low, especially since there are a lot of skills in that game with starting levels that are in the 5% or so range. ToC goes the other way a little, with autosuccess on investigative abilities and it's generally pretty easy to be successful on general skill rolls, until you run out of points; I wanted something simple, with a decent chance of success (especially with pushing rolls available), but still some chance of failure, and I like the Year Zero mechanic - it's something that doesn't generally take a lot of explaining to people new to roleplaying.

On the first point, yeah, that's understandable, and the same will go for me too, especially if I have some deadline to work towards (like marking papers and exams, especially at the end of a semester), though I'm not teaching right now so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

On the second - I've had a varied occupational past too - working various clerical and admin jobs and in a warehouse for a while, then for quite a while I worked on site as an environmental scientist for a water company in the UK and a union steward before deciding to pack it in and move to the US and go back to school, where I worked as a researcher as well. For the last few years, when I have been working (luckily my wife has a decent job as a director working for one of the big publishers), I've mostly been teaching undergrads. When I was younger, I also worked in a club (as a DJ) and did occasional bar work when a mate of mine needed someone on short notice at his pub.

And on the cheese-related point - you aren't wrong! I like a good selection of cheeses myself depending on mood, though I always come back to certain ones. :)

I'm going to keep this thread open for a little while, but I have to say that I do like what I've seen so far.

Okay, okay! 😁 A University of Wisconsin cheddar cheese. It won a Best Cheese award in the US many years back. I don't remember the details exactly. I worked with a food scientist that went to the University of Wisconsin and he brought us that cheese one year. Oh my, that was wonderful.

I have to admit that my forays into American cheeses haven't been that extensive, though given that my wife (she's American, and lived in upstate NY too (army brat)) introduced me to cheez whiz and the like, you can understand my trepidation in asking for other suggestions from her. :D

Since we moved here though, I have tried quite a few Canadian cheeses which I've found to be excellent - there's a smoked maple comfort cream cheese made near Niagara that's gorgeous, and some of the cheeses coming out of Quebec are up there with the best French ones, like Grey Owl (ash covered soft cheese that makes it look a bit like a mouldy brain, and, according to my wife smells like it too). I never found a decent cheese shop in Phoenix (just the deli counters at the usual supermarket chains, and Whole Foods) so my journey into cheesetasting there was sadly deficient. I do look out for decent cheeses in my favourite cheese shops here (I have 3 favourite cheese shops here, and one favourite vegan store that does an amazing selection of vegan cheeses that have really surprised me, given how bad vegan cheese has always been up till now, so I will try some of the decent sounding American ones, and I know Wisconsin is famed for theirs (like Vermont and their cheddars).
Jan 16, 2025 7:29 am
Fave cheese! Of course!

I'm afraid I am firmly of the European cheese persuasion, in that regard!
I enjoy a nice Swiss Emmenthal, very nuanced. But my go-to comfort cheese is the simple, reassuring Pecorella Romana from Italy (not to be confused with the stronger-tasting Pecorino)

I am Dutch, so I go by Dutch Goudse really. In fact, that is like 90% of my diet.

I am new to GP but not new to PBP. And certainly not new to TTRPG. As a teen I have played some D&D and got back into it, and other games, during the lockdowns. That included some mutant year zero, but that is all I know of the YZ system.

I love TTRPGs to escape my daily way to serious life in finance.

While I am no expert on lovecraft as such, I do love the eldritch horror theme a lot. Count me interested.

My committee chair is married to a Dutch historian, and every time anyone says the word gouda (as we call it) (as "gow-der" or "goo-der") he corrects them with the proper pronunciation. Which leads everyone that knows about this to purposefully mention it and mispronounce it whenever he's around. :D

I do like a nice bit of smoked gouda, or one with paprika added.

Ah, Cheez Whiz (not to be confused with Easy Cheese, the spray cheese in a can)... while I don't love it for most things cheese related I'll say this: The consistancy is ideal for making nachos.

Most cheeses don't seem to melt well, and don't stay melted once they start to cool. That jar of Cheez Whiz though? You can go back for seconds and it will still be a nice liquidy consistancy that's perfect for pouring over chips.

So no, it isn't great... but for its one niche use, it excells.

Sorry for the double post, but I forgot something:

Your original post mentioned needing a character sheet.

I'm not a pro or anything, but I've made a few serviceable sheets and would be happy to put one together for this game. Does the rules doc have what you want a sheet to be like, or can I base it off an existing one? Talk to me.

I was just coming here to post about this: Thanks to the wonderful ThatTaoGuy, I now have a character sheet ready to go (in fact, I have two, one looks a bit better than the other I think) so consider this request of mine nullified. :)

You could also ask @Qralloq who enjoys making character sheets and does a great job with them.

Fair enough!
I may still make one, just for the practice, but it's nice to know it isn't needed. I'd hate to have people waiting on me. Lol

Hello! I'm a decently experienced TTRPer looking to get into PbP so I recently joined this site. I've loved the Cosmic Horror genre ever sense I first played Arkham Horror The Card Game, but I really need to work through more my my cosmic horror lit collection than I have so far >.< I've Never played Year Zero but have played Call of Cthulhu and plenty of other games with a variety of mechanics.

Like I said I'm new to pbp but the whole idea is that while I don't have any remaining blocks of 3+ hours to set aside, I have plenty of time to hop on my computer/phone once in a while, so unless something comes up I should be able to post at least once every day or two at the minimum. I'm most interested in doing an investigative journalist, field researcher, or librarian (probably using professor stats). What can I say, I love nerds who find out too much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I go by Rook online and identify as "woman-lite" haha. Favorite cheese is a hard one, I don't really do favorites and I'm bad at remembering names of things. I know I love a good triple cream with some fig jam on a cracker, or goat cheese on roasted/grilled bell pepper. Also while the US is home to plenty of things that technically cannot call themselves cheese, I have to defend our cheese game. We have some amazing stuff if you know where to look. Also google "Missouri Cheese Caves" for a fun time.

I shall do that this weekend when I get chance!

Some good interest so far, I'm going to leave this up till after the weekend (probably tuesday) and then choose, I think, as I know there may be another player who's interested. I also have to set up the game forum, which I haven't done before here, so that might take me a while to learn how to do and then attempt it. :)

Hi, I'm Neil and my real life name is ... aha ... the same!

I'm from the UK, South Yorkshire to be a little more specific and I have mainly just bobbed about in metals related industries, though for a while I've been working as Quality Engineer with white goods related stuff.

Gaming-wise, I've been playing since the 80's, so many rpgs, some historical wargaming and boardgaming have been on the menu since then.

On the Lovecraft related front, I'm more familiar as a player, having left it alone as GM to let others have a bash, though I haven't been involved in this type.of game for a long while. I tended to end up in more investigative roles (actually that can happen in a lot of games) but I'm open to playing a lot of character types. Faintly wondered about playing a jazz musician when I was reading Nick's rules.

I'm not playing as much as I did in RL, but I have been DMing some D&D once a month and running The One Ring rpg weekly-ish for few years, along with a touch of Star Trek thrown in.

I have travelled a bit, though these days I am alarmingly domesticated (can cook a bit) and fail to herd a couple of cats. Musically, I'm all over the shop, though much of it is rock adjacent.

Wensleydale is the cheese I eat the most of, favouring it for sandwiches. I have the same haircut as your favourite plasticine inventor, so laugh it up. I'm also fond of a lot of others; for example, last night's tea featured an artesinal gruyére and cream sauce.

Oh, I like PbP, but don't go overboard in too many games at once. I did play in a multi dm campaign over some 5 years or so on Discord; I still goof off online with those folks regularly.

(wanted to mention, since I am in quite a few GPlane games already, that I'd be happy to leave room for fresher players/new members so they can have a go! Spread the SAN losses, as it were...)
Jan 20, 2025 1:34 pm
Same goes for me too. I am in a few games.
Jan 20, 2025 2:19 pm
Thanks Dr B and Windy, I'll bear that in mind.

Just a quick note - I'm not likely to be able to set the game up in the next week or two, though I will be doing so when I get back. My dad's taken a turn for the worse, so we're flying back to England in thursday. I may also go quiet for several days at a time, but I will try to keep an eye on this thread, and I will still be running the game. I won't be taking my laptop with me, and posting with my phone is a pain, hence being incommunicado for a bit probably. I'll keep you updated though when I can.
Jan 20, 2025 4:19 pm
I'm sorry to hear about your dad! Please feel no pressure to worry about this stuff unless it's actually a reprieve for you. Wishing you and yours the best <3

I echo what RollingforStew has said. We will all still be here when you are ready.

You do not have permission to post in this thread.
