Chapter 1: The Arrival

Feb 17, 2025 1:35 pm
Multicolored lights swirl about you as you plummet, careening out of control. There is nothing to arrest your fall, no handholds to grab, no lifelines to cling to for support. You fall, and fall, and fall, for what seems like an eternity, but then, the ground rushes up to meet you--

*THUD*

You landing is less than graceful, the impact blasting up dry dust all around you. The air is hot and dry, the sun beating down on you as you attempt to get your bearings.

Your seem to be on a rise in a desert somewhere. Behind you, a heavily weathered archway lies toppled onto the dusty earth. Runes are etched into the eroded exterior, their faint green glow already fading away before vanishing entirely. The archway is positioned near a granite obelisk. Below the rise, perhaps half a mile away, stands a strange town made up of an eclectic mishmash of structures arrayed haphazardly along meandering streets, partially surrounded by an incomplete stone wall.

Belatedly, you realize you are not alone. There are four of you in the dust before the archway, and some of you look and feel very strange indeed...
OOC:
You have arrived in this world wearing whatever clothes you had been wearing on Earth. Some of those outfits may be quite ill-fitting now. Your only possessions are whatever you might have had in your pockets or on your person.

Ashis rose up frantically with a sudden gasp. He faintly remembered somekind of accident and pain . . . . and drowning while falling. In an involuntary reflex, he sharply inhaled air and was surprised to feel it very dry and hot. He was not drowning, but there was sand and dust in the air. He slowly rose up as his visions cleared and the toppled archway came into view. What were those symbols? Were they glowing? He almost lost his balance as he back stepped, but surprising enough, he could bend back without any problems. There was something strange with his body. It felt very light and taut, as if his muscles were ready to spring to action, waiting for him to do something, anything! Whatever he did, he never remembered his body to be so fit. As he turned around, he realized that he was on an elevated structure, and in the far distance he could see a town with some curious buildings.

Wherever he was, his house was not present in the middle of a desert! Was this a dream? Nightmare? Then he spotted 3 more figures close to him. There was something odd about them too.

Ashis is wearing a grey t-shirt with dark navy blue jeans. The t-shirt has a picture of d20 dice wearing a mage hat. He also has a pair of dark brown rubber-soled flip flop sleepers. What he doesn't know is that he has long shoulder-length blonde hair and a handsome face with a chiseld chin, sharp nose, dark almond eyes, and a healthy beard. He stands tall, reaching almost but not quite 6 feet with a light, muscular physique. A sense of agile prowess emanates from his movements.
OOC:
So, I am guessing even though our clothes remain same, our bodies must have changed. So, I described what Rone Kanterine looks like.

Eugene blinked his eyes several times, adjusting for the more natural sunlight that now flooded them. He reached up and grabbed his glasses and began to clean them with his graphic t-shirt. Too big, this shirt must have gotten stretched because it was much too big for him now. Repositioning his glasses back on his nose he looked back at the city below the rise. This had to be some sort of hallucination right? It had finally happened, the stress of the job was making him have a mental breakdown.

Turning he saw the other three standing there, "Uh..." he muttered aloud. He wasn't sure what to make of them, if he continued to work under the assumption that this was a hallucination, one that he seemed completely lucid about, then who were these colorful figures? Some sort of Alice in Wonderland projections maybe? Maybe they were other co workers who had found him, and this was his mind projecting the hallucination onto them. "Michelle? Bobby? Dan?", this was all so real feeling, he could feel the heat blowing across his bare legs...wait..bare legs?

Looking down Eugene saw that his pants had fallen down around his ankles...his ankles? Wait, no, these weren't his legs, they were too short, too hairy, although skinnier than normal as well. He lifted his feet and his smaller foot came right out of his black Nike shoe, his compression sock hung limply on the smaller foot. His clothes for sure, wrong body for sure, his mind was projecting a hallucination onto this body as well. The world swirled around him, he could feel his heart beat climbing as it thudded loudly in his ears.

Quickly he gathered up his blue jeans from around his ankles and pulled them up to cover up his loose boxer briefs. "I need to wake up, call my wife, get to a doctor" he muttered once more. He started to try and fiddle around in his pocket and he found his cell phone, he pulled it out and began to dial out, but then noticed the no signal symbol at the top of the phone. "What? How? We have great signal in the building." he then looked back to the others, "Michelle, or Dan, Bobby, whoever you are, I need a doctor" he could feel his breathing becoming erratic, he clutched his hand to his chest, there was an all too familiar feeling there, a constricting that threatened to steel all the air from his lungs. He was having a panic attack.
Feb 17, 2025 11:09 pm
Michel slowly became aware of rushing at great velocity through... something. Still being three-quarters asleep, he wasn't particularly bothered by this. Then the world erupted in a searing brightness as he hit the ground with some force. The closing portal burped out the cheap, white plastic chair he had been sitting in on top of his head to add insult to injury.

Groaning in pain, he slowly sat up and shielded his eyes from the glaring sun with one hand.
He was wearing a long, dark blue, woollen winter coat over a She-Ra t-shirt, with dark blue pants and black boots. A blue woollen scarf protruded from the open bag slung over his shoulder.
His face looks 20 to 25-ish in that ageless Elvish way, but his eyes look at least twice that.

While visibly confused, he seemed more composed than the others as he got to his feet. 'Great, gave me the wrong anaesthetics... again...' he thought to himself. He picked up the old-fashioned, felten hat he lost when he landed and ran his hand through his hair, squinting from the glaring desert sun. And then he paused, and ran his hand through his hair again, the confusion on his face deepening. That's a lot more...more than there should be... Curlier than it's ever been too. He mentally shrugged and put the hat back on his head. He'll figure out the hair situation later. It doesn't seem that important at the moment.

Then his memories started to catch up with him and his inner voice started to ramble. No, wait, they didn't give me anything yet, I was still in the waiting room and it was hot and I was tired and... ooh, I'm dreaming. Got it. Doesn't really feel like a dream but what else can it be...

In addition to everything else, he was also becoming aware of a deep sense of incompleteness, as if he was missing and arm and a leg. He looked around, not really knowing what he was looking for.

Pushing his emotions to the background, he regarded his companions. Looks like he's not the only one that was thinking dreams.

"Ehm... hi?" he says hesitantly.
Feb 18, 2025 7:16 am
Mathias sits up quickly, the sand moving beneath his body as he looks around. "What in the hell...?" He spots the others, noting their strange appearances - one quite short, one with pointed ears - though all three wear clothing that, like his, doesn't seem to fit with the surroundings. He scrambles quickly to his feet, the sun already punishing him for the sweater he wears loosely over his frame, far looser than normal, now that he thinks about it.

"Does anyone know where we are?" he asks pointedly. He feels the familiar weight in his hand - an apple, the same one he was carrying when he turned that corner in the grocery store, just before everything went crazy. What strikes him more are his hands. The hair on his knuckles thicker, his hands a little bigger but at the same time thinner. He suddenly feels nauseous as a strange sense that he has lost himself in some way. He event felt...taller, somehow. "What do I look like?" he asks the man with the pointed ears only a few feet away.

Indeed, to the others, he would appear a strange, foreign version of himself. Slim and muscular, with a strong jaw, short and striking red hair, and chiseled features. There is nothing otherwise noticeably strange about him, unless they had known how he had looked only a few minutes ago.

Ashis was surprised to look at the other persons. One of them was short, almost waist length, and he initially thought him to be a child. But then he saw all the hairs and heard the voice. Was...he...well, he certainly looked like a dwarf of the fictional stories. He went close to the man as he was panicking and rested a hand on his shoulder.

"Hello Mister....? What is wrong? Are you perhaps hurt? You said you needed a doctor. Did something happen to you?"

On close inspection, he definitely felt like a man of short stature, and with all the beard and hair, he felt unmistakably dwarfish. However, he was wearing modern clothing. Was he a cosplayer or something?

He then turned to others and was again surprised to see another man with pointed ears. Definitely an elf! Also, in modern clothing? He then turned to regard the last man, who felt different but didn't have any magical bearing. Though he had magnificent red hair.

It was this time that he noticed his own flowing hair, which was long and thick and turned out to be golden. Wait, he never had blonde hairs. He had stark brown hair, which he was already losing.

Utterly confused, he looked towards the other people and said, "Hello! I have no idea what this place is. Is it India? Where are you all from? I don't remember joining a LARP? You heard about LARP and cosplaying? Are all dressed up for an event or something?"
Feb 18, 2025 2:46 pm
Eugene regarded the man who attended to him, taller, blonde hair, and he was going on about LARP, was that what this was? It had to be right? No, it was definitely a hallucination, he was physically shorter, you can't cosplay shorter like this. "Panic...Attack..." he struggled to get out to the man who was asking him as to whether he needed a doctor. He could feel the air getting less and less, and his vision was beginning to darken around the edges, he knew this feeling, he was going to pass out. Maybe it was for the better, maybe passing out would cause him to wake up without the hallucinations.
Feb 18, 2025 3:23 pm
Ashis felt worried about this. It was a panic attack. Maybe this man suffered from hypertension like his old mother. Unfortunately, he had no medical training. He tried to calm the man by gently but firmly gripping his shoulder. "Close your eyes and breathe. Take a deep breath, hold it for 2 seconds, and release. Repeat it again."

"Eh... normal?" Michel says hesitantly, not really sure what to answer to that, but then he remembers his own weird hair.
"Wait, hang on..." he says as he fishes his phone from from inside his coat to take a picture and show the stranger what he looks like.

He speaks English like he has a more than adequate passive knowledge of the language, but doesn't get to speak it very often.
As he looks at the screen it becomes very obvious that his eyes are better than they have been in years. What he's also starting to notice as he speaks is that he's breathing deeper than he has in decades. If this is a dream, it's a good one.

"What do I look like?" he asks in return as he hands the man his phone, "because this is definitely not the hair I woke up with this morning."

Mathias lets out a sigh, "I'll be honest, I don't feel normal. He takes the phone and looks at the picture of himself. "Whoa. Yeah, not normal. I mean, it's flattering, but...I did not look this way last time I checked a mirror." He looks up at the other man, then raises the phone and snaps a picture, handing it over. "I'm guessing you didn't have pointed ears, huh?"

His attention is pulled to the smaller man, hyperventilating nearby. He trudges through the sand toward the other two. "Are you going to be okay? This is all pretty damn weird, but...kinda seems to me like we're all in a bit of a pickle. Maybe if we put our heads together we can figure out what the hell is going on."
Feb 19, 2025 4:09 pm
Eugene felt the firmness of the strangers hand on his shoulder, he focused on their words, "Right..." breath in, breath out, the air was arid and dry but he could feel his heart rate decreasing with each breath, and more air filling up his lungs. The darkening around the edges of his vision began to lighten as his blood pressure decreased. Soon enough he bent over a bit and put his hands on his knees and took deep breaths.

"Thanks..." he said looking up to Rone. "I'm Eugene, do you know where we are?"
Feb 19, 2025 6:13 pm
Ashis smiled as the man calmed himself, "Hi, my name is Ashis Misra. To tell the truth, I have no idea where we are." He then turned to the other man and nodded, "Yes, I agree with you. All these seem weird for some reason. I lived in suburbs, and there was no desert nearby. So, I don't exactly know where we are. To be frank, I actually don't feel like I am myself. I feel like I am someone else.... But again same as myself."

He thought for sometime about the concept. Was he someone else here in this dream or whatever reality? His seemed to remember something. A flash and sharp pang of pain, and he suddenly remembered from the depths of his mind, "Wait, I am....Rone.....Rone Kanterine. But what does it even mean?"
Feb 20, 2025 12:07 am
"Wow, I look like a kid." Michel bursts out at first glance of the picture, before he even notices the ears. It's his face, more or less, which much nicer, younger skin. And a seemingly complete lack of facial hear other than some mild peach fuzz. But most of all it was the strange eyes that weirded him out.

"I need to sit down..." he mumbles, as he picks up the plastic chair and sits down on it. Experimentally feeling his ears. Pulling and squeezing them, confirming that they are indeed very real.
Taking stock of his situation, he concludes that things are not that bad. He seems to have two functional lungs, and his eyes are fixed, or maybe just a lot younger. He reminds himself that this can't be real, no matter how realistic some of it may seem.

He stands up, puts his hat back on, and walks over to where the rest of the group is standing.
"I'm Michel, and I'm not normally an... ah... Elf. Has anybody else considered that this is not really real? Like a dream or something?"

The sound of shifting sand forestalls further conversation. A moment later, two short emaciated humanoid creatures step into view from behind the obelisk. As if the world’s most revolting lapdogs had somehow learned to walk on their back legs, these two-foot-tall dog-faced creatures snarl and yip, tongues lolling, as they brandish rusty short swords! They begin to scurry towards you menacingly!
OOC:
Eugene, Mathias, and Rone may each act before the enemies! You each have an innate understanding of your abilities: for example, Eugene knows his prepared spells and how to cast them, Mathias knows how to channel his kinetic powers, Michel feels the bond to his eidolon and can call it forth, and Rone knows about his swashbuckler's wit and sword skills.

These creatures have an aura of unluck around them. Unluck Aura (aura, divination, mental, misfortune, primal) 20 feet. Creatures other than animals, gremlins, and gnolls in the aura become extremely unlucky (DC 16 Will save; creature must roll this Will save twice and take the worse result). On a successful save, the creature is temporarily immune to pugwampi unluck auras for 24 hours. On a failure, the creature must roll twice and take the worse result on all checks as long as it is within the aura.

Rone turned towards the bipedal dog creatures, and his face twisted into horror and revulsion. "Eww! What are these things? I have never seen them! Everyone be careful." His eyes focused on the rusty swords, and his heart rate increased. What is going on here? Are these creatures planning to hurt him? He has never been mugged or attacked in his entire life! Hell, he never fought his entire life.

His breathing started to increase as his heart started to beat faster. He even felt like his legs might shake. But his new body seemed to be perfectly normal. It's as if he was not unfamiliar with confrontation; however, naive and unprepared his mind thought himself to be. For a moment, he felt split, almost disjointed. It was as if Ashis was scared of the prospect of fighting, but Rone....Rone has done it numerous times! In fact, what was that? Rone was looking forward to it!

But, instantly, it became clear that he didn't have any weapons. What will he even fight with? He instinctively placed his hand in the pocket and felt his mobile phone along with the store keys. That was what he had when he closed the store after all. But he felt that Rone was not unarmed; he had a weapon. But where was it? Well, Rone never kept his rapier anywhere else other than his belt. And there it was, something tugging at his waist. Rone looked down to spot his Rapier's crossguard.

Confidently, he drew his blade as adrenaline surged and his mind focused on his prey. He moved forward to engage the closest one and immediately felt a nauseating dread that caught him offguard and almost made him tumble. When he neared his opponent, his instinct said to disorient his enemies and confuse them, a tactic he has used quite often. So he tried to tumble through it and land on its back with his rapier drawn. Sending sands flying in the air, Rone landed at the back with flourish as he tried to impale his opponent, not letting it give enough time to recover.
OOC:
Okay, so I am making a lot of assumptions here. I am guessing our starting gear is available to us, even though we can't see them. So I described it as mentally bringing it out to the world, instead of manually sifting through it in a HUD. So Rone will attack with a rapier and here are the actions. First action>stride, Second action>Tumble, gained panache (hopefully 22 bit the reflex DC of enemy), Third action> Attack+precise strike+Confident finisher.

Eugene looks to the creatures that approached and felt the grip of fear, he hurriedly began to try and run away but stumbled over something in the sand. A book, a leather bound tome with arcane runes that he shouldn't be able to read, but that made sense to him perfectly. "The Lexicon of Runed Iron", he quickly pawed at it and opened it up, he knew these words, but moreso he knew these words contained power. How he knew would be something for him to ruminate on later, for now he needed to defend himself. He reached up and fixed his glasses on his face and then then held out his hand, wait! He needed a piece of metal for this...spell, was he really casting a spell? Quickly he reached into his oversized pants and dug around for something, what he found was his car keys, good enough. Once again he reached out his hand, palm up, with the keys sitting atop it, he spoke the words of the spell and the metal of the keys began to fold in on itself, the plastic bits crumbling off the sides of his hand and falling to the sand below.

"Runedor! Skarnik! Tholdrim!" he incanted each word with more intensity than the next, he could feel heat emanating from his hand, causing the metal to turn molten and then reforming it into razor sharp needles. Once they had fully formed the needles flew from his hand toward one of the...Chihuahuas, or at least that was his best analog for what these dog like creatures were.

He then hefted the book up and, placing his hand on the back of the book, incanted once more, this time in common, "By stone and steel, let words be shields!" and called up on protecting runes to spring forth off the book and begin to circle around him and the other strangers gathered around him.

Surprise and revulsion wash over Michel as he sees the malformed canine creatures. He briefly wonders where they came from, as there doesn't really seem to be anywhere for them to have come from. His instincts make him to want to stumble backwards and maybe run away, but this Elven body seems to come with its own weird muscle memory. He instead stands his ground becomes eerily calm as he feels something blossom deep inside himself. He gets a sense of a name, Mirandel, and a flurry of rushing half-memories.

Powerful, primal, life magic starts to fill him. His eyes glow with a golden light. He tries to channel this power where it is supposed to go. He has an instinctive feeling what he is supposed to do. Rejecting the plant-like monstrosity Mirandel would have summoned, he reaches out across space, searching until he finds what he wants, and smiles.

There is a bright flash of light as a giant, feline being materialises in front of him. It looks like a regular cat, but man-sized.

The Beast looks a bit confused, but then hisses at one of the monsters.

Mathias looks at the oncoming creatures with surprise and distaste. "What are these things?" he cries out, his eyes falling to their swords. He instinctively plants his feet and feels the sand beneath call to him. He draws on it without even realizing it, particles of sand raising and floating around him, then thrusts his hands forward causing the ground beneath the creatures to shake and threaten their balance.

Michel's initiative was after the enemies, so I'll have his actions occur after they act this round. @C1NDER I believe your class DC at levle 1 should be 17, not 18.
Mathias causes the ground beneath the creatures to shake. One of them ignores the power, but the other one is battered by the shifting sands. Rone draws his blade and dashes forward, tumbling clear over the head of the wounded creature. He delivers confident thrust, skewering the thing on the end of his sword and slaying it!

Meanwhile, Eugene casts a spell from his tome, hurling several metal darts at the remaining foe and badly wounding it! The creature snarls and spits as it slashes at Rone with its blade! It cuts him twice, though the wounds aren't deep.

Michel calls on the instinctual connection he has, calling forth into the world an enormous cat! The cat yowls and hisses, demoralizing the remaining foe!
OOC:

Scratched by the wicked rusted blade, Rone grimaced and then kicked sand at the eyes of the doglike creature. He tried to remember if he ever had seen a creature like this. He seems familiar with this world. Was he from this world or somewhere else like Ashis? Then extending his rapier, he went in for a lunge.

Feb 24, 2025 2:11 pm
Rone has no idea what this creature might be. It doesn't fall for his feint, but it doesn't matter much, as he thrusts out with his rapier and impales the thing through the throat, a critical hit! It gurgles and dies on the end of his sword, and with that, the short skirmish comes to an end.
Feb 24, 2025 3:06 pm
Eugene's needles return to him and transform back into a chunk of metal in his hands. Though no longer his car keys. He slumps to the ground, and closes his spellbook. "Now things are attacking us!" Eugene said in exasperation. He was glad his breathing was back to normal at least, though he continued to do his breathing exercises to make sure it stayed that way.
Feb 24, 2025 3:43 pm
Rone rubbed the blood on the corpse of the creature and then flipped it over to check if they were carrying something. He then turned to others and said, "Well and I am guessing you three can cast magic. Was it magic? I don't think I can do that."

Looking at the horizon again, he said, "I guess we should start moving and get away from this place. Let's go to that distant settlement and ask around. We can't get anything in the desert."
Feb 25, 2025 11:57 pm
Michel does his best to come to grips with the new size of his cat. Other than her size, she looks and acts completely normal. She definitely doesn't seem to mind the desert sun at all.

"Did they though?" he asks Eugene. "I mean, they didn't look friendly, but I do think we attacked them first."

He agrees with Rone that seeking out the city would be a great idea, especially since they are in a desert without food or water.
He does suggest to maybe look around the area where they arrived first. Maybe they missed something.
"Did anybody see where those dog things came from anyway?"

Meanwhile, Gloria has deemed the dead dogs as unworthy of becoming food, but fun enough to play with for a bit.
Feb 26, 2025 11:53 am
You find footprints near the obelisk indicating that the dog creatures snuck up on you while you were distracted coming to terms with your new bodies and surroundings. Without much else keeping you here, you head for the town. It doesn't take too long to cross the half-mile down the rise to the settlement's partially completed wall.

A few people in colorful, mismatched uniforms mill about at the edge of town, ostensibly keeping watch but in reality mostly just chatting to one another. The most striking thing about these people, though, is their height, or lack thereof! They stand just over 3 feet in height, shorter than even Eugene. Their hair is vibrantly colored, one orange, one green, and one blue. Their eyes and mouths are overly large, giving them the appearance of cartoon characters! They look up at you as you approach.

"Hello! Welcome to Finderplain!" one of them declares. "You look like you've had a rough go of things, eh? Need any help?"

Another one's eyes widen when she sees Gloria. "Ooh! Big kitty! Can I pet her? Can I? Can I?"
Feb 26, 2025 3:36 pm
Rone approached the one who talked and said, "Greetings, we are travelers here. Do you have any place to stay, and might I ask about that archway and obelisk in the distance?" He was quite surprised looking at the short people here, but it was going to be rather rude to ask them about what they actually are.
Feb 27, 2025 1:44 am
Michel was mostly amazed how incredibly not out of breath he was after the walk through the desert across the loose sand.

'The town of the punk hobbits... weird.' he thinks to himself as he sees the inhabitants. "Well, you can certainly try." he tells the one that asked about Gloria. 'Try to be nice' he thinks hard at the now giant cat. 'Whenever am I not' he gets as a surprising sarcastic reply. 'Okay, that's new', he thinks.

Gloria lets the kid (or whatever, they sure sounded childish) pet her a few times and the jumps up and runs away like mad for about 20 meters, comes to a very abrupt halt, and turns around again, bushy tail playfully waving over her head.
"Yeah, she loves it when people chase after her. She's been doing that since she was this big..." Michel explains, holding his hands about fifteen centimeters apart.

Almost as quickly as it started, the fight was over. Mathias stands firm, looking at his hands in amazement, then at the others. "Did you see that? We just...I don't know...it looked like magic, but it felt like I was pulling power from the ground itself!" He shakes his head in disbelief, but senses that connection to the elements still within his grasp, and it follows him as they walk toward the settlement. He picks mentally at the connection, toying with it, and finding if feels like putting on a familiar pair of jeans. He chuckles to himself as if remembering what he had for breakfast and opens that connection, drawing power from the earth again and covering his physique with a layer of stone armor.
OOC:
Using Armor in Earth, which he will from now on typically keep active at all times. He just has to refresh it every 10 minutes to keep it active.
Arriving in the town, he smiles nervously at the citizenry - all so different, yet weren't he and his companions as well?

"Thank you for the warm welcome," he says, "I'm afraid I'm not familiar with your home. Finderplaine, you said?" He runs his hands through his hair - a habit he'd had since a kid growing up in Ohio - "This may seem an odd question, but where exactly is here?"
Feb 28, 2025 12:09 am
Eugene still held his malfitting clothes in place as he tagged onto Mathias' question, "Yes, where and when is here, what is the current date?" he thought maybe he could determine how deep this hallucination went, or were these characters some form of AI. He had just read about Google's Quantum chip possibly proving the existence of parallel universes. Maybe they turned it on again and the whole world had been affected? He was no quantum scientist, but that sounded so far fetched. It almost had to be a hallucination.
Feb 28, 2025 12:42 pm
As the short woman happily chases Gloria around, the man who first spoke scratches his head at Rone's question. "Hmm? Obelisk? Gateway? I'm not sure what you're talking about, friend! But we've got a few inns in town that cater to tall folk like yourselves. I'd be happy to direct you to the nearest one."

He then turns to Mathias and Eugene. "Yep, this is Finderplain! This here's a waypoint for travelers between Nex, Katapesh, and the western wilds. The current date is the 17th of Calistril, 4725 Absalom Reckoning."
Feb 28, 2025 12:56 pm
Rone gave a confused look at the mention of Nex, Katapesh, and Absalom. These names were so alien to him. He could swear that there was no such place back where he lived. He looked towards the other newcomers who arrived with him, trying to gauge their minds. Turning back to the man, he said, "I would love to have some place to eat and rest. Why don't you take me there? It would be a great help, sir."

Mathias frowns at the strange names of places, and the strange date. He tries to keep his mouth shut as his mind tries to take everything they've gathered together to form a picture of exactly what is going on. "Thank you," he says distantly. When Rone mentions food and rest, it catches his attention. "That would be great," he agrees, "I feel like my brain is going to implode. I need to sit down and think."
Mar 2, 2025 10:40 pm
Eugene nodded, "Yes, food, drink, is there by chance a clothes pantry, mine are ill fitting now" the names of places spin around in his mind. If this is a hallucination he is unsure where he has heard any of those places, so he is making them up and they would have no meaning to cling on to. Best to go along with it for the moment, less anxiety at least.
Mar 3, 2025 1:23 pm
The lead guard leads you into the town. The strange settlement seems to be an eclectic mishmash of structures arrayed with the best of intentions along unregulated thoroughfares. The streets average about 20 feet in width, with narrow 5-foot alleys splitting off from major streets, and those streets sometimes constricting to 10 feet wide, widening into impromptu plazas as much as 50 feet across or turning abruptly to navigate the haphazard structures.

This area appears to be a large market, and you spot numerous residents, most of them smallfolk like the guards, hawking strange wares and doing business. The guard stops to haggle with one merchant with a clothing stall. Copper coins are exchanged, and the guard offers you some new homespun clothes that will fit your forms better than your current apparel. Soon thereafter, you finds yourselves in a cozy tavern with accommodations scaled to human size.

"You can change your clothes in the privy here," the guard says. "I'll arrange for some food and drink for you. Stay here and take some rest. I'll be back soon." He then heads out into the town, leaving you to your own devices.
Mar 4, 2025 1:31 am
Michel is quiet, and mostly just takes in the sights and smells of the city. Gloria is around somewhere, he senses; either scouting around on her own or sunbathing on a rooftop, he cannot tell.

He thanks the guard graciously for the food and clothes. He's not sure how much he needs the clothes though. while he has changed significantly in appearance, he has remained more or less the same size. While the t-shirt has become a bit snug, his pants and coat actually fit better than they used to. He thinks absent-mindedly that you can probably put a Rune on his coat, and then finds himself wondering where that thought came from, and what a Rune even is.

"So, does anybody think that the free food and clothes are kind of weird, even by today's standards?"
Mar 4, 2025 2:07 am
Eugene takes the offered provisions and changes in the privy, he comes back out wearing brown leather boots, a pair of blue trousers, and a long olive colored shirt with a brown belt worn around his belly. "It looks like I've just come from the renaissance faire" he mutters as he rejoins the others. "How's the food then?" he asked, assuming the others had tried it.
Mar 4, 2025 3:20 am
"I'm not going to lie, my first instinct with the hospitality is to ask 'what do they want from us?' But then, this is not home for me, and maybe the world is just different here. I would say better if that were the case, if not for the dog-creatures that greeted us first."
Mar 4, 2025 8:38 am
Rone accepted the clothing and changed in the privy. He chose a dark leather coat, inner shirt, and belted trouser as his attire, with a blue ribbon tying his hair in an elegant ponytail. When he returned, he heard everyone's opinion and said, "I know it sounds very sketchy and overly optimistic, but I am grateful for all these. If need be, we must be careful with the food we eat then. Also, I was meaning to ask about probable jobs. I mean, I don't have any money, but the coins here seem quite different, and it would be better if we started gathering some coins to pay for our stay. Should we ask them if any jobs are available?"
Mar 4, 2025 5:32 pm
"Stay?" Eugene was a bit floored, "Why would we stay? This hallucination needs to end. I need to get home to my wife and kids" he looked to the gathered group, were these hallucinations just acting like they weren't from here as well, to get him to feel comforted? "Where are all of you from anyways?"
Mar 4, 2025 11:03 pm
Michel ends up picking an off-white shirt and a Victorian looking dark green jacket that looks like it was designed by a crappy AI on account of the number of lapels it has.
They are of inferior quality to his coat, but a lot more suited to the climate. He's definitely keeping his hat.

"I still think this isn't real and we're dreaming, and we'll just wake up whenever. Or maybe one of us is dreaming and the rest of us are just NPCs in the dream. That would make more sense than a weird shared dream..."
Mar 6, 2025 7:13 am
Mathias changes into a simple tunic and pants, held up by a similarly simple belt. He felt comfortable enough now with his powers that he can enhance his own defenses, so wearing something comfortable felt even better in these strange lands.

"Ohio," Matthias responds to Eugene. "I don't disagree that staying isn't ideal, but whether we're to suddenly wake up or find our own path home, we should plan for the worst case scenario: this is real and we might be somehow stuck here for a while." He nods to Rone, "So, earning our keep isn't a bad idea, if for no other reason than to repay their hospitality, right?" He shrugs, "At least we all seem to be in the same situation, so as long as you guys don't turn out to be a bunch of assholes or something, I figure we better watch each others' backs."
Mar 7, 2025 8:39 pm
As you’re finishing up your meal, the guard who escorted you here returns. Behind him walks another short woman. She has auburn hair and wears fine robes of office. The guard pulls a chair over to your table and she hops up onto it, giving you all a smile.

"Hello, there! We get many travelers here in Finderplain, though I confess none have been as strange as you. I am Soukmaster Satla Kivarn. I’m the gnome in charge here. Well, at least I have been for the past two months. At any rate, I’d like to hear about this strange gate you seem to have come through and where you were before that. Maybe I can help you find your feet here? So to speak."

Mar 8, 2025 10:33 am
Rone was drinking and eating his share of meals as he listened to everyone's conversation. He replied to Eugene after taking a sip from his drink, "Mumbai. I agree that you think this is some sort of dream or hallucination and you are somehow unable to wake up. But I failed the cut from the weapon of those dog-like creatures. (He showed them the wound, which has now stopped bleeding) I felt pain as real as I could sense it. If it was a dream, I should have woken up from the pain."

As the guards returned with another woman who spoke and identified them as gnomes, Rone observed them curiously. When Satla finally asked the inevitable question about their origin, he stopped eating and looked around to check what others were thinking. Finally, he answered, "We came here somehow, and when we regained consciousness, there was an archway with symbols beside an obelisk. My memory is not clear, but I am certain that we are not from here. You can see how our dresses don't match yours, and what I can faintly remember is that I live in a place called Mumbai. But, once we arrived, there was two dog-like creature with rusted swords whom we had to fight before we came here."
Mar 9, 2025 2:15 am
Eugene listened as the others listed off places he was familiar with, places from his world, Ohio and Mumbai. "Missouri..." he said, right before the Gnome joined them. After her speech he looked to her, obvious distress on his face. "From what I've gathered so far, the storyline of this hallucination is that I and several others from our home, were somehow worm holed through to this place. Have you heard of any of the places we are from? Ohio, Mumbai, Missouri..." he waved his hand around the table at the others as he spoke out their home lands.
Mar 9, 2025 7:57 am
"Similar," Mathias says. "I was shopping, turned a corner and poof, I was here, picking myself up off the sand...and here is nowhere like where I came from. I'll be honest, I'm feeling pretty lost. No idea what happened, or how to get back. But the food, clothing - everything - is very appreciated. It helps. I just wish I knew where we are, and...what to do."
Mar 10, 2025 10:46 am
"None of those names ring a bell," Satla says with a shrug. "But strange things have been happening all across Golarion lately. The weather here, in particular, has been erratic. We had a big duststorm blow through just a few days ago. It's probable that the storm cleared away the area around the obelisk enough to reveal that gateway. Now, why it sucked you in and spat you out here, I can't say. But I there's a place nearby where you can find out more.

"The city of Katapesh itself is four days' ride away. It's a huge place full of people and sages from all over the world. Surely somebody there might know about your mysterious arrival. The leaders of the city, the Pactmasters themselves, are even rumored to have come here from a different world entirely."
Mar 10, 2025 11:35 am
"Well, last thing I know is that I was in a waiting room at the hospital, nodding off, and then woosh, I've face-planted into desert sand. It's probably not a bad idea to treat this as real, no matter what we think it is. Just in case it is real. I'm from Belgium, by the way."
Them having seemingly been plucked from all over the world from some very specific locations starts to make him doubt the whole dream thing.

Meanwhile, Gloria has quietly reappeared and is helping herself to whatever leftovers are left.

As Michel listen to the Soukmaster's words, he wonders about these 'Pactmasters'. Did they get here like themselves? The name sounds somewhat sinister.
Mar 11, 2025 5:14 am
Mathias nods. "Four days isn't too far, but I fear we don't have any means of transportation but our own feet. How long of a walk would it be? Or could we hire someone to take us, you think? We've already imposed enough as it is though...is there anything we can to before we leave to repay the kindness of your town?"
Mar 11, 2025 7:51 am
"There is something, in fact," Satla says with a smirk. "A caravan is leaving tomorrow morning, bound for Katapesh. The road is well-traveled, but there's always the risk of bandits or beasties attempting to interfere. I'd like you to ride with the caravan and protect it from harm. Keep it safe, and you'll get to where you need to go. I believe this arrangement will be mutually beneficial."
Mar 11, 2025 2:12 pm
Rone smiled and said, "Absolutely! We are really grateful for all this hospitality that you have provided us. We will make sure that the caravan reaches Katapesh, unharmed."
Mar 11, 2025 2:41 pm
"Bandits and beasties?" Eugene whispered under his breath. He'd been here mere hours and now was being signed up to ward off Banditry and the whole of nature. Still, he had magic in this hallucination, or dream, or whatever this was. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad.
Mar 12, 2025 12:19 am
Michel also professes his gratitude to the Souk master but has some misgiving. four days of travel and some food and clothes doesn't really seem to be worth them literally risking their lives as security guards and potentially killing some people. He makes a mental note of bringing it up to the others later when they alone.
Mar 12, 2025 8:08 am
Satla smiles widely. "Splendid! Then I'll make the necessary arrangements. You'll leave tomorrow at dawn. Until then, feel free to enjoy our town!" She gives you all a nod before hopping down from the chair and heading out.
OOC:
If there's anything specific you'd like to do with the rest of the day, let me know. If not, I'll move things along to the following morning.
Mar 12, 2025 9:07 am
Mathias shifts uncomfortably in his seat. He didn't like the idea of actively putting himself in danger, but if their best chance of getting home was getting to this city, Katapesh, then they would be exposed to such banditry anyways...perhaps it would be safer traveling in a larger group. "That seems fair," he says, "I guess we had best get some rest before then."
Mar 12, 2025 2:53 pm
Rone eyed his empty glass, "I could have asked for another drink. But that would be too impolite. They have already done a lot for us." He listened to Mathias and then smiled, "Don't worry, my friend! With your magics, we can intimidate a few more bandits."

Once the words came out of his mouth, Rone realized that he was never so....extrovert and friendly to someone who he had just met. Wait, why didn't he stop? Where was the fear and insecurity that made him silent in most social scenarios? Was he really going to boost such confidence?
Mar 13, 2025 11:11 am
"I don't know... I mean, we're probably up to the task, but risking our lives to deal with bandits and monsters, and potentially having to kill some people if push comes to shove... that seem worth more to me than what we're getting out of this deal. Plus it would be nice if we actually have some money once we arrive in... whatever it is called. Maybe we can get a better deal when we talk to the caravan people tomorrow." Michel says while he gives Gloria belly rubs.

"Anyway, I'm not tired yet. Gloria and me are going to play tourist for a while. I mean, how often do you get to walk around in an actual D&D village?"

It isn't difficult to learn more information about Katapesh this close to the city. Sprawling across a valley of blazing-hot sand, Kataepesh is one of the most incredible and wondrous cities in all of Golarion. The City of Trade is a city of organized chaos where cash is king and commerce is the highest god. In its vast markets—both the legitimate bazaars and the seedier Nightstalls—merchants and buyers of a hundred different kinds mingle with the human majority. They say anything you can imagine is for sale somewhere in Katapesh, if you can find it, and if you can afford it!

Eugene took Michel's words to heart. He may have to kill people? If this was a hallucination is was both wondrous and dark. If this was somehow not a hallucination, and instead he was gated to another world, what were the implications of his presence, was it ok to just kill these bandits. It would be self defense, but the law was never that straight forward where he came from.

He'd seen these in action at the local renaissance festivals, as well as a old timey farm where they still ran a forge to blacksmith their own horseshoes, nails, etc.

Mar 15, 2025 2:06 pm
Rone remembered seeing a camel back in his own world, but he never considered riding one. These creatures could survive long periods without drinking water, which fascinated him. However, their long legs meant climbing up on one of them could raise you to greater height than most animals. They were, ofcourse not as large as elephants, but....did elephants exist here in this world?

Welcome back.
As Michel goes through the pile of equipment he just received, Mirandel, the weird made-up person whose memories he somehow has, tells him that it seems to add up to around 50 gold, which seems more than reasonable as payment for the job. He's still not happy to have to take a job as basically a mercenary though...

He winces as he sees a Gnome lead in a quartet of camels. Surely they don't intend us to... Yep, they sure do. He can already imagine how sore he'll be after only an hour riding one of those.

He's fairly sure that he can manage to at least ride one, as long as he doesn't have to do anything fancy.
Mar 27, 2025 10:02 am
Mathias looks over the equipment, taking only what he thinks he'll need then regards the camels a moment. He approaches one, hand out, and pets its face when he gets close, then moves around the side and swings himself up onto its back. "Okay," he says, "not too bad, so far.'
Mar 27, 2025 9:06 pm
Eugene approached one of the camels and worked out the logistics of getting atop it with his squat form, urging the camel to lower to a laying position and then pulling himself up onto one of it's humps. "I've done some reading on this Katapesh, and have a decent map of the area. These Pact Masters seem to be in complete control, but what I couldn't find out is how they took control. The only thing noted in my research was that it was a bloodless coup"

Once you get a hang of riding the camels, the caravan sets off into the desert. You soon leave Finderplain behind, heading northeast along a well-traveled road. You pass sandy dunes and rocky outcroppings as you journey. The first day passes without event, and you set up camp for the night, surrounded by the circle of wagons. The gnomes cook a hearty meal and eagerly swap fantastic stories around the fire before you settle down in bedrolls for the night.

The next day's journey begins quiet enough. However, just as the sun is about to set and the wagonmaster is about to call for a halt, you spot a band of four creature lurking behind a nearby dune. They are tall furred humanoids with heads like hyenas, wearing leather armor and gripping longspears. It looks like they are preparing to attack!

Remembering what he's recently read, Eugene identifies the creatures as kholos. Much like hyenas, kholos have a notorious reputation, for much the same reason—their uncanny laughter, frightening intelligence, and efficient pack tactics make them intimidating competition or foes. The most commonly encountered kholo packs in Katapesh are bandits or raiders looking for easy resources to pilfer from unguarded victims.

Eugene casts a spell, attempting to frighten the lead kholo. The magic leaves the creature slightly shaken but she does not flee. Instead, she cackles and leads the others in a charge! The four of them move to attack Gloria, sizing up the giant cat as the biggest threat. They keep their distance and attack with their longspears, one managing to drive their spear deep into the eidolon's side! The kholos position their spears defensively, prepared to parry any counter attack.

Rone watched the approaching hyena-headed creatures as his camel rode on. He swiftly dismounted, elaborately cartwheeled, and attempted to tumble through the closest one.
OOC:
1st action> Dismount, 2nd action> Acrobatics (tumble). Can anyone tell me whether you can feint without any weapon. It says that you need to have atleast one hand free. How about no weapons? Also with I think the tumbling will be taken as a bravardo action?

Rolls

Acrobatics (Dex) tumble - (1d20+7+1)

(16) + 8 = 24

Apr 2, 2025 3:27 pm
OOC:
Are we mounted at the moment? And if yes, do we actually have to roll Nature to Command An Animal to move around?
Apr 2, 2025 3:41 pm
OOC:
You are mounted, yes. It’s a DC 14 Nature check to Command a camel. Or you can spend an action to dismount and move normally. @Stalker05 the only requirement to Feint is to be within melee reach of an opponent. Your tumble is successful so you will gain panache.
Apr 2, 2025 4:32 pm
Tumbling through the hyena-headed creature, Rone weaved side to side like a crab trying to confuse and feint the creature. He was unarmed, but the creature could be distracted from landing a blow on him.
OOC:
Attempting to feint as the third action.

Rolls

Deception (Cha) Feint - (1d20+6)

(2) + 6 = 8

Apr 2, 2025 9:13 pm
Michel winces in pain and surprise as he feels the feedback of Gloria's injury. There is actually blood flowing from his side.
He curses as he starts to bind the wound while starting to mutter an incantation to strengthen Gloria.

Meanwhile, Gloria darts out of reach of the spears and circles around to attack the one Rone is trying to distract, lashing out with her claws.

"Oh hell," Mathias mutters. He opens a gate and summons the elements of nature and earth. He raises a hand, palm up, and lifts it into the air. A tree springs from the ground adjacent to his allies already in close range of the enemies.
OOC:
Action 1: Channel Elements
Actions 2 & 3: Timber Sentinel - Placing a Protector Tree adjacent to Gloria (and Rone, if possible)
Apr 3, 2025 4:06 pm
From atop his Camel Eugene watched the action unfold. This was still so unreal. Just yesterday, or was it still today? Did the night passing in this hallucination, or simulation, or where this was meant that he'd gone a day in the real world without his wife, his children? Had they notified the police of his absence?

That rabbit hole was too deep though, and he quickly refocused his mind at the task of hand. Grasping his staff he pointed it at the Kholo he had targeted before and began casting a spell, almost immediately an arc of lightning leapt out towards the creature, he then swung his staff quickly lashing the arc at a nearby Kholo before the energy dissipated.

He then urged his Camel to move away from the majority of the fighting so that they would be harder to get to.
OOC:

Action 1 and 2: Electric Arc (DC17) one the Kholo I cast Fear on, and a nearby Kholo
Action 3: Command an Animal (Nature Check against Camels Will DC)

Rolls

Nature (Wis) - Command An Animal (Camel) - (1d20+5)

(17) + 5 = 22

Electric Arc Damage - (2d4)

(22) = 4

Rone leaps off of his camel, nimbly tumbling past the kholos to get behind them. He attempts to feint, but they don't fall for his trick. Matthias channels elemental energy as he causes a large palm tree to sprout near his allies, its fronds moving to protect them! Michel sends Gloria around to flank the kholos, the big cat clawing a deep gouge in one kholo's chest with her claws. Eugene guides his camel far from the melee before zapping the kholos with electricity!

The foe Gloria hit is badly wounded. It keeps its spear raised defensively before stepping away and attacking, setting up an advantageous avenue of attack for its nearby ally who also attacks Gloria. The second kholo gets a lucky critical hit, her spear impaling the eidolon! Matthias' tree interposes itself and takes some of the hit, exploding into splinters. However, the remaining impact is still enough to injure Gloria.

The other two kholos attempt similar tactics against Rone, but the swashbuckler manages to parry their spears.
OOC:
A critical hit against Gloria for 18 damage. The protector tree takes 10 of that damage and Gloria takes the remaining 8.

Gloria blinks out of existance, and Michel cries out in pain and slumps forward in his saddle, unconscious.
OOC:
No wait, hang on. 20 HP, -12 damage, +4 from Medicine, -8 damage leaves me at 4 HP, right?

After parrying the spear attacks, Rone finally drew his rapier, lunging forward towards the one that attacked Gloria. Twirling around, he pointed the rapier at another Kholo that tried to attack him previously and said, "If you want to fail in any strike, that's how you fail. Come on! Do I need to teach you how to even fail?"
OOC:
Action 1: Draw rapier, Action 2: Strike with finisher. Damn, I am rolling so bad! Okay, it's finisher, so I still do 8 damage. Action 3: Bon Mot. I don't know if they speak any language; I should probably do a recall knowledge. But, I will give it to fate and do the Bon Mot anyway, if they don't speak common, they won't understand me. Gaining +1 to Bon Mot with stylish combatant. Uff, what a series of bad rolls! We have Brok back here in Pathfinder!

'Not what I wanted to use this for, but I'm dead otherwise...' Michel thinks as he gathers vital energy from the soil beneath him and uses it to mend his and gloria's injuries.

"Can we maybe try and focus on one of these things? Trying to spread the joy isn't always a virtue!"

Meanwhile Gloria steps out of the range of the one that nearly killed her and closer to the severely injured one, and growls as she does her best to try and finish it off.
OOC:
Actions 1 & 2: Cast Heal on self
Action 3: Gloria steps
Action 4: Claw attack.

Typoed my damage, but it doesn't matter anyway.

Actions 2 and 3: Electric Arc (DC17) one the Kholo I cast Fear on, and a nearby Kholo

Rone thrusts his blade out for a finishing strike, taking down the most injured of the kholos! His quip doesn't land the way he wanted it, though. Gloria misses with her attack. Mathias dismounts and moves into melee, blasting a kholo with elemental energy. Eugene's spell shocks two of them.

The kholos continue to be cautious, stepping away and attacking before raising their spears up to parry any incoming attacks. Their spears drive into Rone and Mathias. But one of the would-be bandits is badly wounded, and you can see that their morale is starting to waver.
OOC:
10 piercing damage to Rone, 6 piercing damage to Mathias. Everybody may act.

Rone grunted in pain from the spear attacks. He pointed his rapier towards the remaining kholos and said, "You guys are nasty, uncouth bandits on the run! Do you even manage to survive a week with whatever you steal?" He followed it with lunge from his his rapier and then drew his Main-gauche out.
OOC:
First action: Bon mot the closest Kholo. Wow, these rolls are just unbelievable.

Which one is the badly wounded one? Can we maybe start calling them Kholo#1, Kholo#2, and Kholo#3 so that we can more easily differentiate them?
Apr 9, 2025 7:12 pm
OOC:
Yes, sorry. Kholo 2 is badly wounded, kholo 3 is lightly injured, and kholo 4 is unhurt. 2 and 3 are attacking Rone while 4 is attacking Matthias.

Mathias focuses his will and Rone feels something suddenly grow and fill his hand: a piece of fruit, green and red - it looks delicious and nourishing. He then grins at the creature before him and brings his fist back before slamming it into the creature with another elemental punch.

OOC:

action 1 and 2: Electric Arc (DC17) on Kholo 2 and 3
Action 3: Command an Animal (Nature Check against Camels Will DC) to move to within 5 feet of my allies, hopefully out of range of melee combat with the Kholos

While Rone's quip and attack miss their marks, Michel demoralizes the wounded kholo as Gloria lashes out with her claw, taking the bandit down! Matthias offers Rone a magical fruit before turning to his assailant and delivering a powerful punch! Euguene blasts both remaining bandits with lightning, and Matthias's foe falls! The final kholo whines as he turns tail and runs off! The gnomes in the caravan cheer your victory!
OOC:
Combat's over. The kholo's fleeing at a speed of 25 feet. You can choose to pursue or just let him go.

Still atop his camel Eugene prepares to chase after the kholo but delays until he can find out what the others wish to do, "Do we give chase?"
OOC:
Delaying until we have made a decision.
Apr 11, 2025 2:35 pm
Rone sheathed his weapons and thanked Matthias for the fruit, which felt very juicy, tasty, and fresh. While munching on the fruit, he watched the fleeing Kholo and turned to Eugene, "Let's not waste our time on that one. We need to complete the journey, and this caravan must reach the city safely. Let's move on." He then climbed back on his camel and rode on the designated route.

Rolls

"I agree, let them go. Perhaps they'll tell their friends we're not worth the trouble." Mathias looks to Rone and nods, "You're welcome...I didn't even realize I could do that until I did. This body, and these abilities, are so strangely comfortable and foreign to me at the same time."

He returns to his camel and hoists himself back up. "I guess, let's keep going then."
Apr 21, 2025 12:30 pm
With the sun setting, you only travel a short distance further before setting camp for the night. The gnomes are vigilant in case the kholos decide to return, but the night passes without event, as do the remaining two days of the trip to Katapesh. Perhaps the kholo you let flee warned his brethren about your combat prowess.

Whatever the case, the city Katapesh lies just ahead...
OOC:
Everybody gains a Hero Point! We will proceed now with Chapter 2.
