Professor Criamon out of bounds

Professor Dallon Criamon
Season & Seniority, : Summer: A wizard in the prime of my power
Magical strengths : Terran, Vim, Mentem
Dallon exhibited tendencies at a young age that went against his families magical inclinations. He is unsure if he was allowed to pursue these simply due to his parents giving up on his absolute lack of interest in alchemy or due to other factors. However he was thrilled when he was sent to apprentice under the tutelage of a wizard from the Verditius family. He was allowed to follow his passion for investigation and what some viewed as "mere mundane aspects of study" Allowed to attend a renown college, so long as he also kept up on his magical studies, he graduated and became a professor for a several years before quitting the college campus to drive into deeper arcane studies.

Though no longer directly involved in the mortal world in a public manner he maintains relations and follows up and any and all modern advances. Dallon seeks to heighten his understanding of the world through magic in parallel to the sciences of the natural world.

Household
D'Ortagio (Butler) Qralloq

Professor Criamon's home is a mix of old and new. Though the main entrance nearby rooms stick to more classic luxuries befitting a man of his station there are many aspects of his holdings that have been updated or used to test various ideas he has had over the years. Thankfully the main house is left to be managed by his steward (Butler / Housekeeper) with the help of a cook and several animated statues that act as staff. The other buildings fall under the preview of his apprentice and a rather clever clock smith with a flair for engineering that was employed to help with some of the more practical and mundane experiments. A youth taken on as his apprentice spends much of their time at the residence as well though they are occasionally sent off to study at prestigious schools to help round out their education. The apprentice often receives as much teaching from the professors familiar as from the man himself.

Lands

His home is set well off any major thoroughfares but he has arranged for mail to and from the region to ensure he can maintain contact with those he finds interesting. He has filled much of his home and the land around it with many models both of his own design and to replicate things developed by others. He went so far as to divert a stream to power his water wheel which is connected to the base of his windmill, both of which drive many of his clockward and mechanical experiments.

Usually Dallon is content to stay inside his home, making preparations and conduct his experiments or read and respond to correspondence with other "leading minds", both mundane and wizardly. However he often enjoys wandering the countryside asking any he finds for their views and perspective on things. He is quite fond of real world applications and can be found "helping" the local community with his incessant tinkering. Fortunately he contents himself to simple experiments and trials that usually tie into his fascination with clockwork, saving the local livestock from any attempts at being improved upon.

Professor Criamon sits in his workshop on the second floor over the wheele house tied to his windmill and water wheel.
The creaking and groaning as the mechanisms spinn drown out any noise from the rest of the house but has ceased to bother the professor long ago. The inner working of a clock are laid out before him. On each of the small springs, gears, hands, and more each have delicate etchings of arcane power on them. With a sigh he sits back and glares at them.

I am still missing something. The arcane can clearly interact with the mundane and vice versa as well, though to a differing degree. Surely there must be a way to convert simple mechanical energy to arcane energy . . . he mutters to himself. Glancing up at one of the many more mundane clocks in the room he stretches. What, that long? I best go get lunch in a bit. Rising from his chair he strides from the room on his long legs. But instead of heading into the house he heads out the back door to go for a short stroll before returning to the house for his noon time meal.

Stepping out the back door he mutters a short incantation to seal his workshop before descending the stairs and heading across the lawn to one of the many tracts that wind through his estate. The cool air under the thick tree foliage is a perfect compliment to his brisk pace and he wanders along lost in thought. Meandering without a true destination he eventually ends up heading back to the house and wonders if he should go on another tour to visit his fellows or content himself with his correspondence. He is lacking something and while the peace of his home and estate is conducive to letting him get his work done it lack in the stimulation that he often needs for inspiration to strike.

Breaking out of the trees he looks over his modest home, a quaint country estate with only a minimal staff. Still quality over quantity has always proven its worth to him. Heading to the front door he reminds himself that he really should take more of a hand in the management but there is never enough time. This makes him only more grateful for the staff he has managed to acquire. Good people either already part of the Order of Hermes world or able to be brought in without major arcane manipulations is often difficult as even the largest families of the order hoard their staff more tightly than gold.

The door swings open like a triggered trap and Rema backs out awkwardly balancing an animated statue in one of her muddy wheelbarrows. The dirt and grim coating the slick marble surface.

"You need to stay away from the ovens, you hear!"
Rema berates the statue.

"Now, you just spend some time outside. Don't mind what the Professor said, the rain won't hurt you at . . . "

She snaps her mouth shut and pivots once she spots Dallon. She gives him a smile, though obviously a bit shocked that he is not in his workshop.

"Good day, Professor."

She sets the barrow down, gives a slight curtsy and puts her hands behind her back.

Dallon looks up at the woman's greeting. Oh, Good day to you aw well Mrs Garlandhand. For the life of himself he can not recall if the woman is married but the thought quickly is tossed aside as inconsequential and he smiles in what he believes to be a benevolent manner. So much easier to get things done with a good staff that feels appreciated he muses as he heads inside. Is lunch about ready? he asks hopefully as he looks around. Have you seen D'Ortagio? It would be nice to read the post after I eat. Please do let him know that if you see him.

As he enters the manor he pauses, wondering if he should head to the dining room or just take his mean in his library . . . Best wait on Mrs Garlandhand he decides before getting lost in though about his previous experiments with automatons. While difficult to create they were wondrously efficient but only in so far as their instructions were clear and precise.

Rema Garlandhand

"Oh, we don't need a curmudgeon like D'Ortagio, now do we?" Rema chatters and gossips as she (unceremoniously) dumps the animated statue outside and follows after Dallon.
OOC:
I think it would be wonderful if D'Ortagio just happened to be close enough to over hear such an insult. @Qralloq , Perhaps?
"You're always reading posts, then getting lost in thought and then wandering off to your experiments." She darts in front of Dallon, hindering his path.

"Not to speak beyond my station, Professor, but you must admit something possessed you to take a turn in the gardens this day, did it not? And I think I know why."

She stares at Dallon eager for him not to ignore her and to, naturally, ask why.
OOC:
Do you think Rema's behavior might get Dallon pulled out of his philosophical and magical routine and ruminations and make him consider her opinions? (move #5) -- mostly taking the move out for a spin, I'm cool either way.

D'Ortagio steps induce the room, his hands carrying a sizeable quantity of mail, dominated by a badly wrapped parcel with a number of instructions plastered over each other, as if it has been forwarded multiple times.

He looks pointedly at Miss Garlandhand but says nothing. Such a response would be undistinguished for a man of his bearing.

Nodding absentmindedly Professor Criamon at Mrs. Garlandhand's description of D'Ortagio. curmudgeon would not be the word I would use. Efficient. Helpful. Propper. Yes those sound better. Must be due to perspective. He thinks. Though not the most social of persons Professor Criamon finds the study of people fascinating, though much harder to put into practical application, and has observed that many people behave differently depending on who they are with or they think might see them. Maybe I should enchant a couple of the house golems to record the staff interactions . . . I could make a new one in the form of a cat. People ignore animals he muses.

Drawn back by her next statements he coughs to cover his embarrassment. Nothing wrong with thinking things over but I suppose it is rude to ignore ones situation due to errant thought. Don't know what you mean. I often enjoy a brisk walk. It gets the heart pumping. Good for the mind to keep a healthy body. Why would I need something special to get me moving? Whatever could you mean?

The sight of D'Ortagio with the post instantly grabs Professor Criamon's attention and he calls out, instantly rearranging his plans. Just put the posts in the library D'Ortagio. You can take the parcel up to my study, I will have to get to that later. Best hold off on opening that or I might get lost in another matter he muses while wondering who it could be from and mentally going down his list of correspondence.

I will be taking my lunch in the library, thank you Mrs. Garlandhand. Too much to do. Excusing himself to his cook he heads to the library.

Rema, still oblivious to D'Ortagio lurking in the background, gives her left foot a slight stomp.
Rema Garlandhand
"What ever could I mean?"
She sputters and flounders, repeating the question with little success to hide her outrage.

Before she can retort, Dallon announces he will be going again to his library, at which point, she blurts out.
"That, exactly that! You work too hard, sir. So hard that you don't see to the needs of your creations!"

She glowers and cast her eyes back to the forlorn animated statue, which now sits in the mud outside the kitchen like a porcelain pig.

"Tell me true. You say it was for your mind and body, but did you not also feel a higher inspiration telling you to tend to that which you have made?"
OOC:
How many animated statues are there in House Criamon? Tell us more about them-- do they talk, for example?
Feb 28, 2025 7:13 pm
Professor Dallon Criamon sees no need to create replicas as each creation should fulfill a need as well as further his understanding and skills. This he has over time accumulated a strange menagerie of magical constructs. His early creations were of simple creatures, a snake, a rat, a dog, a cat, and a couple birds. But as he was unable to give them flight without a preponderance of magic he ceased that branch of research. His familiar is one of these flying automatons. There is also a horse and large ox as well as 3 humanoids.

The child size animated statue was more an experiment in construct behavior and has no special enchantments or abilities save higher recall, task management, and a touch of stolen fey magic to give it a spark of creativity. The largest golem has enhanced strength and durability making it the perfect tool/assistant for larger heavy projects but it's lack of care when not under direct orders tends to keep it out of the manor. The mid sized automaton has the most grace awareness, containing a whisp of personality that Dallon insists is a quirk, byproduct of various enchantments and quickly changes the topic after saying it is just another dead end.

I can name them or others can if they desire, especially if any wish to take up any of these options
Familiar : clock work bird possessed by a shade of house Criamon
Child Statue : magically animated statue with a stolen fey core of indeterminant type
Potentially concious Construct : may have memories or even the entire mind of a person driving them.

Looking to the small statue Dallon sighs. Indeed it is his responsibility, but it's not like it will be able to really hurt itself. Still best keep peace. Clearing his throat he addresses the small figure.

Go clean yourself up and come join me in the library. We can try out your problem solving again. What do you say to a game? I will let you pick from one in your cupboard. Over time he has tried several games to see how creative and expert it might develop. It how has a small variety of games such as chess, checkers, and other small two player board games.
