Welcome to the game! I've created other threads here with an overview of how the game works, the starting characters you can choose from, and a few introductory scenarios we can pick from when we are ready to get started. I'm happy to answer any questions you have. :)

I'd love to play Percival Combustion or Lady Sheridan for the chapter, and if I need to go with a resident, probably Yazeba, Sal or Hey Kid. Although I like pretty much all characters, so if we want to switch things around, I'm happy to reconsider!

For the chapters, do we pick any of those? Purely on vibes, I like Lights Out, The Breakfast Feast, Another Rainy Day, Who Knows How a Garden Grows (green friends!) and Wash Cycle. I don't mind trying the others though, these are just the favourites! :D

Yes, you can play the chapters in any order you wish, so pick the one that you think will be the most fun. :)

Also, you're able to choose different characters for each chapter, so don't feel like you need to be beholden to any one or two in particular. Unless, of course, you like them so much you just want to keep playing them!

For chapters (going on FS's suggestions) I'd opt for either How a Garden Grows or Lights Out.

Looks like Garden or Lights Out are early favorites. We’ll wait for Drgwen to join to see her thoughts.

Drgwen still hasn't accepted the game invite. I sent a PM to see if they missed it.

In the meantime, I think "Lights Out" is a bit less complicated than "Who Knows How a Garden Grows," so I think that will be a better chapter to start with. I'll play Parish, so TheGenerator can play as Amelie and FlyingSucculent can play either Percival or anybody else of their choosing. I'll open the chapter thread here shortly.

We could either wait to officially start until Drgwen joins us, or get started and have them join in when they're able. It's up to you all. :)

Um, maybe? I haven't really used that feature yet. In my other game, I simply had a real deck of cards that I would draw from and then post which cards I drew! But I can play around with the decks here to see if it would be a viable way of doing things. Chiefly, I'm not sure if you can remove cards from a deck when it's time to reshuffle.

I haven't used the card deck before. Afaik, it's customizable but only in terms of a deck of playing cards. I'll also check it out when I have some time. Probably this weekend

I'm pretty sure reshuffling once again refills the deck to the starting one. But who knows, they're always making changes here.

OK I've read through all the materials you've posted, DMbrainiac, an this game is adorable!

For characters, I like Hey Kid and Viv the most, but I am also happy to try out others too, like Gertrude or Yola. For chapters, I think the Pensive ones are my favorites, but then again I love deep, emotional chats about finding my place in the world, like in After Dinner, which might be a little heavy for this game. So I think I'd be happy with just about any!

The pensive chapters are some of my favorites, too. While it’s a mostly lighthearted game, there are some heavier themes featured in certain chapters. The especially heavy ones come with a little warning tag.

But for now, we’re starting with an eerie chapter! Either Hey Kid or Viv would be a good choice for this chapter, so play whoever you would like. :)

I'm feeling Viv for this one! hey Kid would be more fun for a Frantic or Pensive one, I think.

Do we just start RPing in the lights out thread? Or should I still wait for something?

You can technically use custom deck - with scripts - and just edit it every time we reshuffle, but it's probably more hassle than it's worth.
Alternately, we can just do a numbered list of cards and roll the dice, shortening the list each time.
Or, and I think it's the simplest one, just leave the deck as it's and simply ignore card repeats. XD

I like getting philosophical at times, but I think it's best to start with something easy to get in the groove, you know? I'll absolutely be up for pensive chapters later!

Let me get up a post for Parish to kick things off and then you can start posting at your leisure. Tickettbror will be joining us here as well, so we will wait for them to get situated before we start looking for Omen cards.

Was I right in thinking that this game had been billed as having a slower posting pace? I will try to post once a day and often more but occasionally, it might be a day or two. I hope that’s not a problem.

Yeah, it was said to be about 3 posts a week. For me it will also depend from week to week how fast I can be.

Yeah, same for me! I usually post every other day or so, but I can miss a day or two at times. I certainly don't mind pauses between posts. :3

Yes it will be a more relaxed pace. I think everybody is just excited to kick things off. I usually post frequently but I'm going to deliberately pace myself so we don't leave anybody behind!

Not sure if that counts as a whoopsie because it's not in Amelie's list. Just RP fun, I suppose.

If Amelie takes a tumble, it can lead into Percy's whoopsie of blaming it on himself. :D I was just thinking of accidental arsonism and knocking stuff around without meaning to so far, but there are many possibilities!

You are certainly free to RP and do whatever you’d like your character to do, both within and outside the framework of your Bingos and Whoopsies.

Once everybody is here and ready to start in earnest, somebody will need to do a Bingo or Whoopsie specifically to press on and start drawing cards from the deck. When an Omen is revealed, we will stop and wait for everybody to have a chance to react to it before somebody else interacts with the deck again.

I made a "character sheet" for the game, but it's just the image of the Viv page. Is that OK?

And how do I post as her? I don't see the option here, like I do in other games. I apologize for my ignorance! I just joined GP like a month ago.

@Drgwen Yes, it's perfectly fine to just have the image for your character! I've approved her, so you should see the option to post as her now.

I don't mind people going ahead with RP while I'm too busy to post. Sometimes the back and forth between 2 characters goes very fast. But please keep in mind that others might want to chime in on a conversation that they are not yet part of.

It has happened to me that I've logged in to find 10+ new posts and I missed a chance to add something fun to the 2nd one when the moment is already past.

I would appreciate ppl watching out for that a bit ☺️. But I won't be a sourpuss about it either. Hehe

I found this older thread with a similar card deck issue. I don't think there's a solution for it yet.

We'd have to keep a list of "out of the deck cards" and redraw if we hit one of those.

The last time, when you said "Anybody who isn't Parish.." I interpreted it as "all the players have to...". But now I'm thinking I might have read it wrong.

Ah, you're right. The specific text is "anyone," not "anybody" or "everyone." But it also doesn't say "somebody." Like many things in this game, it's open to interpretation. We can say that at least one person needs to do the Whoopsie, and now that they have, we can continue on. :)

@Drgwen, Viv hasn't drawn from the deck yet so she'll have the opportunity to do so now if she wants to.

Now that the spooky stuff has been resolved, anybody who wishes to may press forward with a Bingo or Whoopsie. Percy, Viv, or Yazeba haven't done so a second time yet. :)

Congratulations on completing our first chapter!

I've created a new thread with a link to the tracking document for Characters, Tracks, and Shelves. Here we can see the progress everybody has made on their journeys, make notes or changes to character sheets, fill out assorted tracks, and place Mementos on Shelves to make progress towards unlocking new things. Take a look at it when you have a chance.

At the end of Lights Out, we turn the Omen cards we are holding into Leftovers. Everybody but Percy had 4 Omens at the end of the chapter, but I'll be fair and give Percy a fourth Leftover as well. These Leftovers are used to mark tracks on each character's journey. I went ahead and marked them for Parish, Percy, and Viv.

@TheGenerator, Amelie's four tokens allow them to make the first step along their journey. They can either add, cross out, or change one of the lines of their Programming.

@Tickettbror, Yazeba's journey doesn't have a track. Instead, she makes progress by being mean to different people! We can look back and see if she can check off any of the items on her journey's list. Her 4 Leftovers can be used to mark one of the Assorted Tracks. Some of those tracks unlock new Guests and a few lead to more Mementos, so take a look and let me know where you'd like to put them.

We now have our first Memento! Take a look at the different Shelves available. The one Memento on its own isn't enough to unlock anything just yet, but we can decide as a group which Shelf we want to start working towards unlocking first.

Once all that's done, it'll be time to pick the next Chapter that we play! Take a look at the Chapters threads and let me know which one(s) you'd be interested in playing next.

Alright, I've posted the new chapter's introduction and rules. Take a look and decide who you would like to play. We'll somebody each to play Amelie, Sal, and the Rabbits. The remaining players may choose any other resident or guest they would like. Once everybody has chosen, we can begin posting!

Folks, I'm sorry to say, but I'm failing to get invested in this game. I'm not entirely sure why I struggle with it so much, but I think a good part of it is the pacing - it is a little too much "thing happens - everyone reacts once - new thing happens" for me. I like prolonged character conversations way too much and struggle with reacting to stuff retroactively; enough so that while I'm trying to compose a post, things move forward and I get stuck again in a compounding mess. XD I think it's just my fundamental incompatibility with the way the game is structured - which is fully my fault, I should've researched it better.

I'm game to try another chapter in case it was just specifically that one which messed with me so badly, but since I'm considering withdrawing, I'll withhold from making any persistent decisions for now.

I'm happy to try playing Sal, since he was one of the characters I was interested in originally. Edit: or maybe Rabbits, if someone else prefers Sal!
PS: I feel like I've done disservice to Percy, but alas; maybe someone else will play him better down the line. :D

I enjoyed playing Viv, and with all of you, and I thank DMbrainiac for running this game! But I am going to step away from this game, as I am getting overbooked for games at the moment.

@FlyingSucculent, it is mostly the eerie chapters that are structured in the way you mentioned, with everybody reacting to an event before another event occurs. The other type of chapters allow for more freeform play and conversations. Frantic chapters can get a little wild with events happening, but relaxed chapters and especially pensive chapters lend themselves better to the type of play style you favor.

If you like, we can hold off on the garden chapter and try a relaxed or pensive one instead. I’d hat to let one bad chapter sour you on the whole game. I can post the full rules for chapters you might be interested in so you can have a better idea how they might play out.

I can't pass up on a chapter about gardening, even if it is frantic - it's in the name! Even if we're gardening veggies, not succulents. :D

I'm happy to try it, especially since it seems to be more of a back-and-forth between characters mechanics-wise than the previous chapter was. And if my slower posting is a problem, I can probably play Rabbits as they are more passive characters? Although I'm pretty happy with Sal or even picking someone new/continuing with Percy.

And you're probably right that the pensive chapters would be more my jam. If the garden one goes well, I'll be interesting in trying a pensive/relaxed one after. (Checking the rules before might be a good idea, although you never know how it'll go in practice... I'll see how this one goes first!)

My programmer brain went straight to "How do we solve this chapter in the most optimal way?" And started calculating options. Then I remembered that's not the point of this game 😂😂😅

It might not be the point of the game, but I fully intend to commit to playing Tic-Tac-Toe in the garden. So prepare for much bribery for your Xs and Os!

Out of curiosity, are there any measures to prevent a softlock? Since there is a limited number of veggie tracks and Rabbits can delete Xs and Os, it's technically possible to run ouf before the garden is finished.

Much of the rules are open to interpretation. Should that happen, well, we'll just have to decide how the chapter ends!

Another quick clarification: does placing X/O in the garden counts as ticking a track? Specifically, does one need to flip Chaos Coins for that? (I would imagine not, as otherwise the Couns will scale very quickly, but it is *technically* a track...)

No, you don't need to check your Chaos Coins to place an X or O.

Hey all, I'm going to be away from the 15th to the 23rd without internet access, I can maybe get a post in tomorrow but I wonder if Braniac (or someone else) wants to handle the rabbits until I get back?

I can attempt to play Rabbits, although I'm not sure how effective I will be at it. XD
..Although, I think it might be funny if we all play a rabbit, kinda like secondary additions to our posts. That'll make three (four?) rabbits, a pretty balanced number of critters to do some vegetable stealing (even if they still technically only get one turn)!

I think it's fine if anyone who feels like it plays the rabbits until Tickettbror is back, like FlyingSucculent suggests. Sounds fun!

I have a question - are we maintaining a turn order? I was trying to follow a pattern, but it is now off-track and I don't know if I should post or not. All post went in order ASBR-ASBR-ABS-ABR (as in Amelie, Sal, etc.), but mechanically meaningful posts went ASB-AS-A, so am I safe to assume that if someone doesn't do a mechanical thing on their turn and only does flavor, they're skipping the coin check?

(I know, I know, it's not a mechanics-first game, but I just worry about accidentally skipping someone. XD)

If I don't do a roll, it's because I didn't have a good idea on how to. So yes, feel free to skip me. In the end we're just working together anyway since progress is always shared.

I’d just say give everybody a chance to make a post before making another of your own. There’s no strict turn order, and not every post has to be a mechanical one!

The posting order fully skipped me last round, so I thought you moved ahead and I didn't need to post for it, and in the current round I would prefer to post after Rabbits. :D

I had posted for Amelie since the Rabbits had given them their "O." But feel free to post for Sal, with two attempts at checking coins if you'd like to make up for being skipped. The turn order isn't strict, and I don't want it to be limiting for people to post at all. Just have fun and let's grow this garden. :D

I do like strict initiative, but in this case I just want to go last, to give myself more leeway to not get ninja'd. :D Although if we don't follow any order, I guess there is no such thing as last? ...Anyway, I'd prefer to wait for after Rabbits if it's fine with you all!

(Also since *someone* deliberately rejected my bribery, it's probably better if Sal goes last so him and Boggs can interact without accidentally skipping Rabbits. XD)

Of course, you don't need to adhere to it! I know I'm not the fastest at writing so I'm fine with folks pushing ahead, but each time makes it harder and harder to catch up. And I'm sorry for bringing the speed down; if it's becoming too much of a problem, I can just withdraw! :)

And I don't mean to ask for a strict order, I was just hoping to have a defined spot in this specific case cause I knew I'll have trouble writing a post after a lot of stuff happened since my last one and I'll be slow with it. I'm really bad at adjusting my posts when someone else jumps in while I'm still writing, so with long ones it's almost always a guaranteed pain - which was why asked for it. Probably should've been clearer that I'd like to post directly after Rabbits, in hindsight. XD

Is anyone else having difficulty with this chapter? I'm not feeling very creative about it to be honest so I'm wondering if that's just me. Perhaps if I'm not the only one we can just finish up and proceed to something new?

Honestly, I'm finding it a bit too mechanical I guess? I'm not sure how to phrase it, but I feel like the chapter's coin flipping and things come across a little bit intrusively.

I'm also finding the rabbits harder to play than Yazeba and I honestly have no idea why. They're not so far from my usual characters so who knows. ^^'

Of course that's not to say I'm super against this chapter if we wanted to stick around with it too, by the way!

Yeah, I agree with this. Even though it's not rocket science, something is making it a bit too complicated.

I like mechanics of this chapter more than I did the previous one's (and the theme, but I'm susceptible to plant bribery in general). The cards were a bit too simple for me, and the the constant switching between scenes made it way too inconsistent for my taste. This one I find writing for easier since it's a continuous event, and like it more. :3

PS: maybe me and Dmbrainiac can speedrun it to the end and then I can still get my plants and we can still switch chapters? I do have a couple of mostly free days coming up when I can probably post quickly for a while.

In the meantime, we can start deciding which chapter we want to play next and run them concurrently until the garden chapter is complete. Perhaps a Relaxed or Pensive chapter will be a better fit for everybody!

I will refrain from choosing a chapter since my last offers weren't the best. XD I think I'll only ask for no fishing chapter. I don't like fishing.

I'm not big on fishing either, so I'm happy to avoid it. Go ahead and post though, I'm still kinda struggling on the Rabbits at the mo.
