[OOC] Stuff and Things

Mar 6, 2025 3:30 pm
This is the Out of Character thread - discuss stuff here that isn't in character, ask questions, let everyone know if you're going to be absent for a while, the usual sort of thing. You know the score.
Mar 6, 2025 4:09 pm
I think I want to discuss a few things I feel Sam would always have on him (barring situations that would specifically prevent or remove his stuff).

I want to say an Apache Revolver. 😂

A 1911 with a spare magazine, a swiss army knife, and possibly a sturdy fixed blade knife seem to be more probable though.

I would also assume he'd have a BAR at his home. Not that he carries it, and he probably won't get to use it, but it seems fitting. (The NFA was passed in '34, and saying he bought it after the war puts him well before that date.)

No on the apache - it's a rather specialist bit of kit. Yes on the M1911, as it was standard kit, and yes to both knives A M1917 bayonet, maybe, for the fixed blade?). BAR is again a specialist bit of kit, so you'd have to make a Credit Rating roll to buy one with a difficulty of 2 - one for the cost, and one for the ability to find one for sale. I would allow a M1917 Enfield rifle though, since that was standard issue too for the time period. Would that work?
Mar 6, 2025 4:40 pm
The first In Character post is basically just to set the scene, to get you all together - I'm not expecting a massive post in reply, so don't worry that there's not a lot to work with there. The order in which you reply is the order you get picked up in the car, basically. I'll post again with your arrival to meet the patron once you're all ensconced in the car. The first person to reply, the car is empty; the second, there will be the first person in there, and the last, the other two are already in there, so perhaps describe your character as you get in so that the others have something to base their posts on and introduce yourselves to each other.
Mar 6, 2025 4:48 pm
Great introduction, Lemming!
Mar 6, 2025 5:48 pm
I've added another thread with pictures and notes on NPCs that you meet. I probably won't do this for all of them, just ones that you're likely to interact with / investigate / interview and that you might want to remember who they are. As you know more about them, I'll probably add some bio info etc.
Mar 6, 2025 6:00 pm
a useful tool for NPCs (you might know this already, apologies)

maybe it would be useful for you to create and submit to your game a blank custom character sheet called "NPCs" or something, that can act as a container for all your NPCs.
There is a trick to post as an NPC from that one character sheet. If you write in the sheet this code format:

https://i.imgur.com/MojOdGS.png

It will give you a gallery of NPC names and portraits. You will be able to tap on the each one to post as that NPC.

https://i.imgur.com/mYk5txu.png

(also, pasting a copied image into the Gamersplane post editor will automatically upload that image to Imgur and return the link - SUPER useful!)

I saw that there was such a thing, but I think I'll keep to doing it my way - there may be posts where several NPCs are interacting with you, and it would be confusing if it looked like there was just one doing so. Maybe. The NPC thread is also where I can stick notes in about each NPC too (the first post will be an index linked to each NPC).
Mar 6, 2025 6:12 pm
Sure thing - a useful thread!

(BTW you can post as multiple NPCs like this:)

Ok, that does look pretty good, would you prefer to PM me to show me, as if you're explaining to a 10 year old who's never heard of computers before?
Mar 6, 2025 6:16 pm
sure, maybe Discord chat is easiest?

That too. I'm on the GP discord. :) I set up a testing thread here too so I can try out stuff as you try to explain to me and I don't get it. :)
Mar 6, 2025 6:22 pm
I have to at least try. 🤣

I will, however, preemptively assume it fails. An Enfield 1917 is fine. As is the associated bayonet for the fixed blade.

Rolls

Credit Check - (3d6)

(421) = 7

Oh look, I was right. 🤣

loved the Green Book mention @Neil

got me to look it up, and I learned something new

Cafe Society was a real nightclub too I noticed, and one that accepted both black and white patrons (several of the more famous ones in NYC only allowed white patrons, though most of the musicians were black). I always like to try to bring in actual historical details myself, so I tend to google when others also mention somewhere on the off chance it's based on a real place / person.

I'd also recommend Lovecraft Country (Matt Ruff) if you haven't already read / seen it (tv series based on book) and its sequel - the first book was all about the Green Book (and Cthulhu).
Mar 6, 2025 7:25 pm
You can introduce yourselves to each other in the IC thread, then I'll post again as you arrive at your destination.
Mar 6, 2025 9:44 pm
I was going to bring Cafe Society in to Lillian's story more (it was there by name in my earlier background draft), but the timeline was a bit out.

Haven't got to Lovecraft Country yet. Drifted off radar.

I'm ok with a slight bit of legerdemain for timeline stuff if it makes for a more interesting background detail. So no mobile phones suddenly appearing, but stuff like Cafe Society appearing a couple of years earlier than actually occurred is fine.
Mar 7, 2025 2:54 pm
Long info dump IC post coming. It's going to have a lot of stuff in there, I'm afraid, but this is the introduction to the campaign, so there's quite a bit to relate. If you want to have a thread purely for keeping notes, etc, I can set one up too - would that be useful?
Mar 7, 2025 3:05 pm
definitely useful. We can also hyperlink crucial points from the IC thread in the notes thread, for easy indexing
Mar 7, 2025 3:27 pm
I've added some more posts to the NPCs thread - including Walter Winston, so you can keep track of who he was, and Douglas Henslowe, though you don't know what he looks like yet or much about him. I've also added a little to Frank Kearns, since you know know he's also a pilot.
Mar 7, 2025 3:29 pm
I'm going to put handouts in the IC threads where they come up, would you prefer I also put them in the Notes thread that I've just started, or a separate thread purely for handouts and indexed like the NPC thread?
Mar 7, 2025 4:11 pm
Notes is fine for me, but whatever is easier for everyone, including you.
Mar 7, 2025 4:18 pm
handouts in the Notes thread sounds fine to me too
Mar 7, 2025 4:28 pm
Ok. We can see how it goes, if there's any danger of them getting lost in the mix.
Mar 7, 2025 4:49 pm
(of course Gabriel will eventually accept, don't worry: not trying to derail the campaign here, just reacting in character to the very unusual setup and demands!) 😅

No worries. :)
Mar 9, 2025 2:15 am
I won't be able to post them till tomorrow or monday, but I'll put up the handouts for the letters - which she's happy to hand over now, so no roll needed Neil.
Mar 9, 2025 9:27 am
OK, cheers!
Mar 10, 2025 9:21 am
So, regarding the firearms front, thinking of burying a Colt Model 1908 Vest Pocket hammerless semi-automatic single-action pistol in her suitcase. Uses .25 ACP rounds, 6 in a magazine.

At a pinch, it can be concealed in a bag or coat pocket.
Mar 10, 2025 12:16 pm
Also, I am considering pushing the roll, but the 1 that was rolled is annoying.

Nick, is Lillian's drive viable, should I feel I need it?

You Time To Shine - so she can maybe show off a bit?
Mar 10, 2025 1:02 pm
Each person can try the Theoretical Sciences test individually in this case. I wouldn't use your Drive just yet - there are probably more important rolls you'll be making later on - and someone else may get lucky with their roll.
Mar 10, 2025 1:06 pm
Alright.

I found myself trying to solve something with a scrap of paper.
Mar 11, 2025 12:03 pm
good spot on the 1933 change of sender's address @Neil

If Lillian mentions this to Gabriel, he can make a roll to see if he recognises the address as one of a Sanatorium in Georgia, if he heard about it?
Mar 11, 2025 12:58 pm
Yes, assume Lillian is making her notes available to your PCs, unless told otherwise!

If I miss anything or want something adding, feel free to ask.
Mar 11, 2025 1:33 pm
Neil says:
Yes, assume Lillian is making her notes available to your PCs, unless told otherwise!

I would encourage you to use the Investigative notes section as in character, just to add some extra feel to it. And I also assume that whatever is written in there is being shared with the party as a whole.
Mar 11, 2025 6:16 pm
Anything else that anyone wants to ask Janet Winston Rogers, or shall we move on to a brief research interlude? Use the same thread if so, and let me know what you want to research, and where.
Mar 12, 2025 12:44 pm
I'm up for a look through the book shelf, looking for things shoved where they shouldn't or books with overly cracked spines. Guess this would be Spot Clues, if it is required. Thought I'd ask first, in case Janet has been holding out and can be Persuaded.

Don't bother making a roll for this - there's nothing there that you can find that isn't as it seems or as described earlier.
Mar 13, 2025 1:44 am
Hello, gang. I am back after my disappearance. Sorry 'bout that. Hoping to get a character together in the next day or so and jump in.
Mar 13, 2025 10:17 am
Hiya, Tim.

OK, folks. Added a few more notes to Lillian's 'consideration list' and feeling that I'm personally out of potential leads to follow at the moment.
Mar 13, 2025 1:31 pm
If the rest of you are ready too, then post in the current thread about what you want to investigate / where you want to look before you fly down to Savannah.
Mar 13, 2025 2:45 pm
That would be Dr. Walker.

Samuel is just there for safety and moral support. lol
Mar 14, 2025 3:09 pm
MaJunior, could you put the gear you have with Samuel on his character sheet (The gun, bayonet, etc) under the Gear heading, so we know that you already have those with you?
Mar 16, 2025 1:47 am
I'm still here. Been a very rough few days. I hope to get my character together tomorrow.

Ready to go.
Mar 18, 2025 7:28 am
Good to go, thanks
Mar 18, 2025 11:43 am
Think I'm good, thanks.
Mar 19, 2025 6:47 pm
I've got a trip tomorrow through Monday. Getting ready for it has kept me distracted (thus my lack of posting). Perhaps I can drop in after I get back? Or, if I'm being to flaky, I can step back for now and maybe hop in if you need a replacement player at some point.

No, monday is good.
Mar 25, 2025 12:55 pm
I'll wait on Tim before making my next post - hopefully you can post today, Tim?
Mar 27, 2025 9:26 pm
I'm really sorry, but I seem to not have my s*!t together. I'm going to back out so I don't slow you guys down. Good luck fighting the great old ones!
Mar 28, 2025 1:36 pm
Sorry to see you go Tim. Take care, and hope things turn out better for you soon.

@Lemming23 how would it look, in 1937 Savannah, if two white men took rooms in the same Green Book hotel where Lillian is staying?

Thanks to Jim Crow laws, hotels were segregated - so I'm going to say that you wouldn't be able to stay there with her. As to dinner - it's a warm evening, so I'd suggest you each getting food to take out and meeting in a park nearby to eat.
Apr 1, 2025 2:47 pm
Makes sense, thanks
Apr 3, 2025 4:53 pm
Yeah, come get her. We could do with figuring things out. What's going to happen by river, anyway?
Apr 3, 2025 5:11 pm
Neil, apologies - I missed you wanting to buy the pistol earlier - in order to do so, are you going the legit way (in which case make a Credit Rating roll to get one), or the underworld way (in which case make a Mean Streets roll to get one)?
Apr 4, 2025 6:26 am
I'd just started with it, to be fair, but with one clip. If she has to use it, she's probably doomed anyway under normal circumstances.

Still want me to roll? I'll have a bit of post editing to do.

It is basically a small concealable 6 mag semi-automatic pistol.

Yes please. It's not the sort of thing a jazz musician would normally have as part of their everyday gear.
Apr 4, 2025 12:15 pm
Lillian was going to be a good girl with permits in NY at least. Means sod all down here in Georgia and she'll know it, but let's see. Not looking to push the roll.

Credit Rating at 5.

Removed from gear. Will consider it later!

Credit Rating - (5d6)

(45132) = 15

I am thinking, next move in the morning could be researching the Henslowe family in the Library to learn some background. Also, we could look up local history on occurrences in 1924, the year things changed for Winston.

Then a visit to 513 West Henry St., from where Douglas Henslowe wrote most letters.
Apr 5, 2025 9:19 am
That would tick off the first thing on the list. We might also find something in newspapers or other records about anyone going missing.

* Learn more about Douglas Henslowe.

* Who were the others (who were left behind)? Records of folks reported missing in August '24? Rumours in locale?

So, sounds good.
Apr 6, 2025 6:58 am
Fast forward to the morning after, and some research rolls?
Apr 6, 2025 2:27 pm
I'm good with that.
Apr 6, 2025 7:11 pm
Yep, fine.
Apr 8, 2025 2:16 am
Bit tired today, it's been a long one. Post coming tomorrow.
Apr 9, 2025 5:44 pm
not sure, you spotted this OOC, @Lemming23 ?

Apr 9, 2025 6:54 pm
AH, no, I saw it but then forgot to deal with it. Can you make a Psychoanalysis test for me?
Apr 9, 2025 7:31 pm
Rolled. It's a no!
Apr 12, 2025 8:16 am
So, family estate or Sanatorium? I kind of favour the family visit, hoping it will go well and perhaps strengthen our hand to visit the Sanatorium later.
Apr 12, 2025 10:07 am
Family first sounds good to me too.
Apr 17, 2025 6:14 am
Carruthers' pic reminds me of Oddbod Junior from Carry On Screaming.
