[Wait-listing] Dungeon Goons: the Land of Mag

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

You are in a basement of an abandoned palace in the old capital city, Magog.

Your reavers live and strive in a fairy-tale land of disrupted power structures. Six generations ago, the four-armed god emperor Mag disappeared, producing tumult among the populace of its eponymous domain. Two kings and a queen are trying to establish supremacy and a rule of law in place of the vanished god's whims.

The kings and queen dislike paladins like your reavers, because they are remnants of the disrupted society, reminders of what many call a golden age in which the vanished Mag roamed the land, settled disputes, enforced hospitality, and ate wrongdoers. Reavers can hear the Voice of Mag, and from its whispers they can bind spells that afflict them or those near them with arcane marks. Reavers are feared and respected.

Some of you are reavers. Others pretend as much. Yet others hope to gain what reavers have.

Hi.

As requested below:
• I am looking for 2–4 players.
• Who can post about daily during the week, occasionally less often. (Looking for QUANTITY of posts more than quality.)
• In a game that will go as long as we're interested. (My record for play by post is about 2 years on rpg.net forums. Actually using the same rules I'm proposing here.)
• I don't like graphic violence or sex. Allusions to pretty much anything could happen.

There is a very simple set of roleplaying rules called Dungeon Goons. It is barely more complicated than Tunnel Goons, from which it derives. Most of the added complexity is in providing starting coinage and a list of equipment that can be purchased with that coinage. The rest is a one-page magic system. I'm going to add some to it here: in assigning points among Brute, Skulker, or Erudite stats, roll one die 3x and look at the following tables:

1 Brave (+1 Brute)
2 Uncanny (+1 Erudite)
3 Clever (+1 Skulker)
4 Kind (+1 Erudite)
5 Engaging (+1 Skulker)
6 Tough (+1 Brute)

1. Savage (+1 Brute) 2. Nomad (+1 Skulker) 3. Rural (+1 Brute) 4. Urban (+1 Erudite) 5. Enlightened (+1 Erudite) 6. Degenerate (+1 Skulker)
1 Warrior (+1 Brute) Coldlands Berserker Minotaur Champion Sweetpool Mercenary Magogan Sword Tutor Yogogan Spearmaster Fae Strangler
2 Thief (+1 Skulker) Vineland Cultist Magzay Pirate Sungat Scoundrel Magogan Thug Gogogan Spellreaver Fae Cutpurse
3 Scholar (+1 Erudite) Coldlands Skald Minotaur Chanter Village Witch Wizard Trancemaster Fortuneteller
4 Priest (+1 Erudite) Jungle Shaman Pirate Chaplain Protian Elder Celebrant of Mag Philosopher Charlatan
5 Hunter (+1 Skulker) Greymeadows Crocodile Hunter Old Sands Wyvern Hunter Stalker of Withering Gogogan Thiefcatcher Valley Archer Yogogan Assassin
6 Warrior (+1 Brute) Jungle Pit Fighter Grass Dunes Bandit Valley Veteran Gogogan Sergeant Magogan Recruiter Fae Stabber

There is a fairly complicated world called the Land of Mag. 60 pages would be a lot to read, but the summary on the itch.io page will give you a good idea of what it's like.

I'm interested in running a game that starts in the basement of an abandoned palace in the old capital city of Magog, and may go anywhere from there.

Interested, but would like to know the usual game info stuff...posting requirements, number of players, game duration, lines/veils, etc.

I was actually looking at Tunnel Goons just the other day....

You would seem to have an "uncanny enlightened warrior" → a Yogogan Spearmaster.

"w Yogog: the Steel City trades in fine steel goods and ingots of poor iron; the King's intent is to discredit those who try to imitate his citizens' works. The Smelters and Forgers are an extremely powerful guild, of which the King is an honored member. In addition to human soldiers, fey and minotaurs guard the low and thoroughly-cursed walls." ← there's more if you'd like me to expound.

Yeah, game details work for me. 👍

So every character will be a Reaver?

Interesting question, bc that's the default for the setting I wrote. But I think it might be more fun to use the Dungeon Goons rule that you need +2 Erudite or better to cast spells.

↑ if you click on that character sheet, it should open in Google Docs and let you make a copy to edit. Then you can use the same

An "engaging Celebrant of Mag"

I promise in the GAME thread, once you've made your character sheets, I will post a brief intro for each of your characters in the setting context.

Know for now, in case you haven't looked at the itch.io page, that Mag was a four-armed living god, somewhat resembling the trolls who still roam the land. As a Celebrant of Mag, you're responsible for enacting ceremonies to honor the vanished god. You also are a "reaver" who can hear Mag's voice whispering spells to you. I'll randomly roll as many spells as you want to hear, but each one counts against your inventory score (starting score is 8).
