Thursday, 2:17pmhttps://i.imgur.com/sLoOFv5.jpegEckert’s Auto Solutions: You’d gotten the place at a steal when old Eckert was looking to retire. He’d been happy to take your money, and you’d thought it was pretty funny that only the ‘Ec…to Solutions’ lights on the sign outside were still working.

Now, you all sat inside, desperate for something to do. It had been, what… 10 days since the phone last rang? Melanie, Jasper’s niece, was happy to take your money, too. This place was going to put her through college next year, and she’d negotiated $14 an hour, whether the phone was ringing or not.

And right now, the phone was most definitely not ringing…https://i.imgur.com/XQMrZYy.jpegUntil it does. The sharp thrill of the old-timey phone reverberates around the old auto-repair place. Eckert had been kind enough to leave some of his old junk lying around when he left.

"Adds to the, eh… aesthetic!" he claimed, as he fell over himself getting out of the place once money had changed hands. Now you can’t help falling over the stuff as you race to huddle around the phone. Melanie picks it up, takes a sip of her Starbucks, and then speaks the words you had all painstakingly agreed makes a good first impression:

"You’ve reached the Ethereal Squad. How can we help you?"

The voice on the other end of the call is frantic.https://i.imgur.com/TNsU7b0.jpeg
OOC:
Welcome, all! Let’s get this thing started.

Who are you? What do/were you doing around the old shop while you’re waiting for a job?

Abby was hanging upside down by her knees on one of those raised platforms for working on cars, doing vertical gut-crunches, when the phone rang…

She flips herself onto her feet and just stares at Mel. Eagerly. Desperately. Hopefully…?

Her dubious expression gradually stretches into a grin as Lucas’ voice carries across the otherwise silent room.

"We got one!"

She looks at her fellow ghostbu… er… squad-mates.

"So, um… I don’t know who’s driving that thing." She points to the hearse. "But it ain’t me, so… Shotgun!"

And speaking of guns, Abby grabs her double-barreled weapon-of-choice: her particle thrower and slime thrower duct-taped together. She named her weapon ‘SLIME PARTI’ since the tape covered all but five letters of the labels on each weapon.

She places her weapon in the back of the hearse. She also has a garbage can, which she secures in the place where a coffin would normally go.

As a fireman, Curtis was no stranger to waiting around for the call to come in. But this time felt different. It wasn't going to be another cat stuck in a tree or some university students burning food in the dorm kitchens. This would be the first paranormal investigation of the Ethereal Squad!

During the wait, he missed the pool table and darts they had at the fire station, but he had still kept up his daily yoga and Pilates regimen. And he spent a lot of time planning his next hiking trip to the Smokey Mountains.

When the phone finally rang, he hopped into his jumpsuit, adjusted his lucky Green Sox cap, and grabbed his particle pack and ax.

As Abby heads toward the hearse, Curtis says "C'mon! Let's walk instead! It's just down the street and walking is so much better for the environement."

Professor Niles Hammond is sitting in what was once the manager's office, shoeless feet propped up on the desk, reading through his copy of Spooks, Specters, and Shades of the Far Realms when the phone rings. He marks the page with a finger while he strains an ear to the main office where Mel was.

Once he hears Abby's shout of excitement, Niles grabs his bookmark, a cut-to-size oil dipstick scavenged from the auto store leftovers, and slides his shoes on. He briskly walks to the main area.

Finally! Where we headed, Mel? I'll drive, Abby." While he waits for an answer and for the others, he begins grabbing his gear from the repurposed auto shop employee lockers. His ghost trap and proton pack, walkie-talkies, and his battered copy of the Anarchist's Cookbook. He puts the gear in specialized racks made from metal tubing welded into the interior portion of the hearse where bodies were normally put. He climbs into the driver's seat and waits for the others.

When Curtis mentions walking Niles can't help but smile. To him, everywhere in the city was within walking distance. And Niles cares very much for protecting the environment, their gear was quite heavy and bulky. Carrying it around the streets of a major city was no simple stroll. And that isn't even taking into account the chance of a mugging.

"I'd enjoy a brisk walk, Curtis, but this gear is heavy and I don't want to be mugged and our gear fall into the hands of a common criminal."

AJ is preparing some pancakes for everyone when the phone rings.
"Yipiiii yipiiii yeahhhh we have a case!! Told you that putting ads in the traffic lights was going to work... or perhaps was the local newspaper! Dont know... we have a case! Come on everybody, quickly! Lets go!"
AJ rings the bell they have in the room. "Come on! Dont be lazy!!"
She then ran to take all her equipment, including the ghost sniffer, and the frying pan, just in case.

Jasper grins at the sound of Abby's excitement. He shuffles the tarot deck one more time and tucks it into the chest pocket of his faded surplus flight suit. Picking up his vintage foil-lined Minnesota Stars beanie from the battered tool box where he's been sitting on an equally battered swiveling shop stool, he scrunches the special lining onto his head. He grabs the med-kit satchel. His proton pack already is in the hearse; he's not very good with it, though.

"let's go!" he half-shouts. His gardening gloves are in the back pocket of the flight suit. He hopes they might help him actually grab a ghost.

"I forgot that these packs are pretty heavy for the average person. And we want to arrive fresh for our first case!"

Curtis loads his gear into the hearse and squeezes into the back seat with AJ and Jasper.

You tumble into the car; packing the thing full of any kind of supernatural implement that might be called on in a call-out ghost hunt. It’s a tight squeeze once everything has been accounted for!

There was just no telling what you were going to be dealing with when you reached ground zero.

With a wicked screech, followed by the sound of your packed gear rearranging itself in the back of the hearse, the vehicle pulls out of the ‘Ec…to Solutions’ at speed. Melanie sips her coffee and sees you off, even as the dust cloud you kick up hits her.

The city is a big place, and so you’d never know that there was a dire supernatural event happening at this very moment just a couple of streets over. Niles puts the hearse to the test, as he zips this way and that through the sedentary, mid day traffic of this part of town.https://i.imgur.com/0pxUoSx.jpegIt’s only when you pull into the huge parking lot of the equally huge store, that you notice the presence of the citizenry is greatly diminished.

Tires screech by you, as cars whizz in the opposite direction. You’re approaching, while they are doing everything they can to get away!

Jasper dips his fingers into his chest pocket and flips out a card: Three of Swords. What useful information does he get from the face of the card?

AJ smiles "Ok boys and girl, we are arriving to the party just on time! Everyone is running away! It must be biiiiiiig thing! I bet... it is slimy! What do you guys think?"

Abby jerks her thumb toward her slime-thrower. "If it ain’t slimy, it will be."

Then, in the interest of not coming off as way too cocky, she turns to face AJ. "Seriously… I don’t know what to think. Like, I’m psyched, but also a bit nervous. We gotta un-possess people… that’s a hell of a debut mission, long as we save ‘em all, o’course."
Mar 25, 2025 10:56 pm
Niles can't focus much on the conversation as he's dodging cars whizzing by, horns honking and tires screeching. "These people drive as if they're possessed! Are we sure they aren't the ones we're after?" Finally he gets the hearse parked in a spot close to the entrance.

"We have to be careful if the people are possessed. Proton packs would be fatal against living beings so we'll have to handle this another way. Any of you good at exorcisms?"
Mar 25, 2025 11:09 pm
Abby has her weapon in hand. "I can slime ’em. That won’t kill anyone."

She ponders a moment. "Well, okay. The So if I slime a possessed person at the top of an up-escalator, and they slip and fall—which is kinda the point o’ slimin’—but then they fall on the stairs? So like, they keep tumblin’ down but more stairs keep going up. Forever… but I think Bullseye’s just one floor. So we don’t gotta worry about that."

She grabs her garbage can lid because it makes a half decent shield.
Mar 26, 2025 4:05 am
"I'd bet it is demons doing the possessing, so I think this is going to be one hell of a first mission!" Curtis says. "Did anyone bring vials of holy water or a Latin bible? I guess I could try and knock 'em out with the flat side of my ax," he adds as he climbs out of the hearse.

Jasper slips the card into his pocket and gets out of the hearse. He grabs his proton pack from the back and settles the heavy apparatus onto his back. Looking at the somewhat worn out big box retail building he shakes his head. "I didn't expect a haunting somewhere so mundane and dreary," he says.

Mundane though it may be, you had read that some entities manifest in such places to cause the most panic and chaos. Haunted houses and abandoned asylums could only stretch so far. It was better to strike the living where they least expected. The energy was that much sweeter when you hit them where it hurts; and what better place than the only place in town where you could get a hot dog and soda for a buck-fifty?

The automatic doors of the big store swoosh open as you step within range of the sensor. You hit hard in the shoulder by a slim woman racing outside while looking over her shoulder at whatever was transpiring within. Just before she slings a denim jacket over her Bullseye Team Member T-shirt, you see that her name is Lauren.

Lauren
"Nope! Nope! Nope! Nope! Nope!… Ow!!" she says, taking your shoulder on her chin. "Sorry!" she says, as she pulls her canvas bag over her head and rubs the soreness out of her chin.

"You guys are nuts if you go in there!" she says, before scurrying on further away from her place of employment.
You hear the chaos going on all over the Bullseye! Luckily for you, the entrance seems to have been hastily and almost totally abandoned. Save for one confused looking man, speaking into his phone as he holds it in front of his own face.

A voice note:

Lost Husband
"Where on Earth are you, sweetie? I’m… I’m here at the checkout!" he says, before shooting off the voice note and waiting for the response.

The Bullseye Floor Plan. Available as a nice fold out leaflet right at the entrance of the store. We at Bullseye want you to get where you want to be!

Abby says to the lost husband. "What’s her name? We can do a search—Home Goods, Clothing… A.J., care to join me in the Ladies’ Room? To search for the guy’s wife. Not like I gotta go or nothin’."
OOC:
Since Restroom is not numbered, I OoC think nothing is in there. If that proves to be the case, Home Goods (#5) is a natural next stop after the empty restroom.
