land of mag: ooc

Good (time you're at when you read this)!

This will be our thread for general discussion, questions about rules, etc. This is not a thread for questions about what your character perceives, general knowledge of the world, etc. ← that stuff goes in the GAME thread.

First Rules thing: spells you know go in your "backpack" on the character sheet. Holding that s*** in your head makes it hard to carry stuff physically.

Second Rules thing: just to reinforce what's in the Dungeon Goons rules: you need +2 Erudite or better to cast spells … but once you're there, you can just "listen" to the Vanished God Mag and a spell will pop into your head like an earworm song.

Hello fellow Reavers! 🪓

So my guy is +2 Erudite, +1 Brute? That's what I remember, but it looks like you changed the tables from your original Games Tavern post.

As far as naming conventions: any fantasy-sounding name will do? Or does the world have certain names we can use to add lore to our characters?

Also, Dungeon Goons rules say we roll starting silver and then purchase starting equipment. Applicable here?

Table change did not affect anyone's character. Yes, +2 Erudite +1 Brute Yogogan Spearmaster. I'm eager for you to name them and post a character sheet, so that I can drop knowledge about them in the GAME thread. Egyptian / Babylonian names would be great to use!

Yes, please use Dungeon Goons equipment rules.

Also please let me know in this ooc thread how many spells you would like to listen for. I'll roll them randomly from the setting book (it uses enhanced Maze Rats magic tables, for people familiar with those rules). You tell us all what they mean. Then I'll tell you their DRs.

Regarding the character sheet I don't have access to your template.

*Edit 80 silver pieces to spend.

In addition to your other equipment, you have 2 shovels and a sledgehammer that you are using to break and clear the rubble.
Do we each have these items, or 2 shovels and a sledgehammer in total? If the latter, who carries them, or do we decide?

Backstory once you post more flavor about my dude.

Just a note, the economy in Dungeon Goons (and Land of Mag) is silver-based. When you roll starting coin think little silver pennies, not big hefty gold pieces.

Comfort Vine Blood: A warm, emerald glow spreads as enchanted vines emerge from the ground, wrapping gently around the target. The vines prick the target, injecting it with rejuvenating sap that courses through the bloodstream with a strange pleasantness.

Mechanics: heals one target.

Throne Spray Course: With a commanding gesture, the caster channels the authority of kings, unleashing a torrent of forceful, golden energy in a wide arc. The power courses forward in a controlled path, knocking back and damaging foes.

Mechanics: a conical blast that damages and pushes back enemies. Similar to Thunderwave.

Mag was a four-armed living god, somewhat resembling the trolls who still roam the land. As a Celebrant of Mag, you're responsible for enacting ceremonies to honor the vanished god. You also are a "reaver" who can hear Mag's voice whispering spells to you. I'll randomly roll as many spells as you want to hear, but each one counts against your inventory score (starting score is 8).

I'm going to go 5 spells. I have to figure out the inventory at some point. I think I love Mag, which will make playing the celebrant easier :D

Engaging Celebrant of Mag, skulker +1 and erudite +2. I feel like skulker in this case is less about sneaky-thiefy and more about avoiding the front lines.

IMPORTANT.

I think I introduced some confusion to character generation which I want to correct.

The dice rolls generate random adds to stats. The total of all your stats (B + S +E) at the end of chargen should be +3. No stat should be negative.

Starting coin (silver) is 2d6 × 10.

Thing about spells: when you use them, they're gone — whether or not they take effect.

I'm going to go back up and edit the "spell" posts to add DRs.
Mar 25, 2025 2:50 pm
It may not go without saying, to cast a spell you roll +Erudite and if you miss the DR you take the difference as HP damage. This replaces the rule to burn HP for bonus to the roll. There may be magic items that help you cast specific spells repeatedly.

Nice.

When you say "once you use them, they're gone" are we talkin gone-gone, or gone until I hit the books again?

Each spell in your head fills an inventory slot in your backpack on the sheet. It's physically taxing to carry arcane energy like that.

When you listen for a spell, you'll hear one and you can choose whether to keep it in your head. It takes a few (1d6) hours to listen.

When you cast a spell (roll +Erudite, risk loss of hp, happens instantly) — or record it in a book (same roll, same risk, takes 1d6 days) — it leaves your head.

You can copy a spell from a book (no roll, no risk, takes 1d6 days) into your head. The spell stays in the book, too. Each book holds one spell. It takes dozens to hundreds of pages to fully describe and capture the energies that throb in your head as just two or three words.

There is a tower in Magog called the Blue Library. It's a major repository of spellbooks. It charges a very steep admission fee. The books aren't well cataloged, but they're kind of generally organized and you can quickly scan their titles as you move among the shelves. There are librarians who will guide you, too.

Is minotaur like... a symbol.

A 1, 1, 1 doesnt sound like a minotaur, more like a guy with a bull on his shield.
