Playing with Dice Rolling and such...

Apr 22, 2025 4:32 pm
Okie Dokie. I've started this thread just to play around with the dice rolling feature here.
OOC:
PLEASE, play around with it, too.
Classic Traveller dice rolls are almost always 2d6. Appropriate skills are added as a bonus. High attributes may provide a bonus where applicable. The standard unskilled penalty is a negative three (-3), but that might vary a bit depending on mitigating circumstances. I'll include sample skilled and unskilled rolls below.

The skill "Jack of All Trades" is a special case. It allows re-rolling of unskilled tasks. So, for instance, if I'm trying to do emergency repairs on the ship's artificial gravity generator and lack either "gravitics" or "engineering", I do so as unskilled. If I have J-o-T 2, I potentially get two re-rolls.

Dice mechanics are simplified from what we got used to on Tavern_Keeper, but should work well. As follows:

Dice should be in the format
(number of dice)d(die type)(modifier)

Separate rolls should be separated by commas or on new lines.

Example: 2d4, 3d6+4

.

Rolls

Experiment - (2d6+1)

(63) + 1 = 10

Attribute modifiers as follows:

In a situation where a character's attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Education, Social-Standing) are role-played, DMs to the dice roll will be applied.

ATTRIBUTE modifiers, used where appropriate.

Attribute-Value/Modifier

1-2 -2

3-5 -1

6-8 +0

9-11 +1

12-14 +2

15 +3

Note that these modifiers are not automatic, but are only applied when role-play and description of actions warrants it.

OOC:
Decherrek is trying to hack into a database at a shady 'pawn shop' in Startown's underworld, looking for clues to the whereabouts of the crew of a 'skipped' ship that may be hiding out nearby.

Computer-2 and Education bonus of 2 gives him a +4 for this task roll.

Rolls

Computer Hacking - (2d6+4)

(23) + 4 = 9

OOC:
"Tracy" (as he likes to be called) succeeds, but the private security firm watching over the Pawn Shop's Systems has detected the intrusion and has managed to track him down. An agent bursts into his hotel room to apprehend him, brandishing an autopistol!
But Tracy is prepared for such an event, and whips out his sonic stun pistol to try and disable the man!

Tracy's pistol skill is '1', range modifier for 'close' is +1, and the snap shot (un-aimed) gives a minus 1, so a sum of +1 for his shot. Damage (non-lethal, stunning) is 3d6-3.

Zzwwaaaaamoh!

(edit: Tracy hits and the damage is sufficient to incapacitate the security agent. Well done!)

Rolls

Stun Pistol Shot - (2d6+1, 3d6-3)

2d6+1 : (55) + 1 = 11

3d6-3 : (642) - 3 = 9

okay
here is my poor attempt at the dice rolls for the game

LC
LC squints at the navigation console like it just insulted their mother, tapping in the coordinates for the next star system with the confidence of someone who definitely didn't just guess. Space may be vast and unforgiving, but LC’s got snacks, sarcasm, and a mostly functional nav computer—what could possibly go wrong?

Navigation-2 and Education bonus of 2 gives him a +4 for this task roll

2d6+4

Here is an image of my dice roll, am I doing this right?????

Navigation plotting for Jump - (2D6+4)

Well it looks like I did this right?? Right? Let me know.

Yes, that is correct. Just enter in a description of what you are doing and the roll. As soon as you post it is seen at the bottom. You can then either edit your post (which doesn't change the roll) with any reaction to it or add a new entry. GM choice if he prefers one or the other.

Thanks!!!

Rolls

Cargo - (2d6+2)

(36) + 2 = 11

Speculative options - (2d6+2)

(52) + 2 = 9

High passage - (2d6+2)

(44) + 2 = 10

Low birth - (2d6+2)

(64) + 2 = 12

wouldn't Said Ma's EDU stat of B give her an additional +1 on all rolls above????
OOC:
Also shouldn't the rolls be in the game post when David posts for the next day?
Understanding you are getting a jump, Kudos for that!
LC will assist in the rolls if he is present and not wearing cement shoes

That is a question for Dave, since I do not know if she gets an extra +1 or not. I thought it was just for the highest bonus

As far as waiting for Dave to post for the next day, I guess I could wait until then. However, my weekend will be very hectic... So this just lets him know what I'm doing in the event I am unable to respond quickly. It also lets others know what I'm doing so they can plan accordingly.

So, I guess it's up to David...

Yeah, my two cents but I think it would be easier to follow the line of action if the rolls were included in the post related to the action. I sort of thought this area was more to test how rolling works and make sure everyone was comfortable with it.

This thread is for fun and practice.

Attribute bonuses are supposed to be applied IF there is relevant roleplaying involved. If Said Ma (above) was referencing her prior training or experience in some way then the attribute bonus would apply.

OK, OK, I know. We've been pretty fast and loose with this. And I'm not going to strictly enforce it. But it really could be a fun prompt to enhance your roleplaying.

Ah, didn't realize this thread was the die roll test thread...
So, disregard these rolls and I can re do it in the proper thread
And your two cents worth is always appreciated Mum's...

Thanks for that clarification on the extra points Dave, I didn't know that. So, If I roll play her education factor into the figures, I can add an extra +1 to the roll, in addition to her +2 for computers?

Would this be for any rolls she made (referencing her past history or education) or only specific rolls?

OK, let me change my mind on this. Attribute modifiers should be used where appropriate. Both positive and negative. I encourage you to use that as a roleplay 'prompt', but there is no requirement. After thinking about it a bit, I believe that twisting someone's arm to get a bit of extra color into a roleplay-thread is inappropriate. Thanks.
May 2, 2025 4:54 pm
Perhaps, but it could add a bit more color. I will likely use it for that purpose as well.

That was the biggest problem with tavern keeper…. Editing the post rerolled the dice
