Welcome to Waterdeep @Avraham! This is your own "Session zero" thread.

Hello, htech, and thank you for the invitation. I'm just brainstorming here, but would you allow the Church of Selune as one of the factions? It isn't listed in your thread but is mentioned in the Wiki article on organizations in Waterdeep.

Of course! Feel free to create a devotee of Selune. The Moon Maiden is very prominent in Waterdeep.

In fact, the House of the Moon still has the tallest tower of any temple in the city, rising nearly 75 feet above the street. =)

Thank you. While not 100% complete, I submitted a character for your review. I didn't pick an "extra" trait since the heritage gives two and the background gives something as well. Happy to add another if you wish. Also, I welcome any feedback or constructive criticism you may have. Thank you!

Character approved! As suggestions for your missing trait, it could be one of:

Divine blessingSome blessed individuals may or may not wield the raw magical power of a scroll, but their faith grants them subtle yet potent miracles. These individuals can call upon minor divine interventions, such as creating gentle auras of warmth or calm, purifying small amounts of food and water, mending minor wounds, producing soft light, or warding off minor supernatural influences. They can also sense the presence of divine or unholy forces and discern sacred or cursed objects. To invoke a blessing, describe in detail what you are attempting and perform a standard 2d6 Test. If you wish to affect an object, you must be able to see it clearly. You can also unleash a simple Ranged attack, such as a bolt of radiant energy. This functions like any other Ranged attack in Combat, requiring an Action to prepare, another to fire and a successful 2d6 Test.
HealerYou can Test to heal others 2 HP. You can also cure non-magic sickness or poison by touch. If the test fails, you may not try to heal that person again for 1 shift, or until their HP is reduced again.
InsightfulAdvantage to discern deception or sense someone's attitude
VigilantAdvantage on Initiative Tests

The first ones will make your character a cleric, instead of just an acolyte. The last ones are, maybe, useful in some situations.

... Or you can add your trait later, during play =)

What do you think?

I think I will go with Divine Blessing. Luna was not cut out to be a cleric/priest, so Healer would be too strong. However, this fits into my perception of his being goddess-touched. How he will use it and what traits he will develop remains to be seen :)

Thank you!

Regarding your hooks, there are two which would resonate with my character. "A Silent Patrol" would appeal to a member of the Church of Selûne. Finding someone who is lost and needing saving to return to the glorious light of the moon would tug strongly on his heartstrings. "The Masked Soirée" would appeal to Luna's Moon Elf heritage. The one which would almost certainly not be of interest to him would be "A Hot Opportunity". He has neither training nor interest in disarming "clicking things". He would be neutral on the remaining two.

Also, regarding NPC/relationships, I'll add a few after the weekend, I hope, but may reserve to flesh that out more fully until the adventure develops further, if that is alright with you.

Sure! I just need a faction or relationship to start. We already have yours, so that's fine =)

OOC:
What does Lunareth (and you) think about the 2 new hooks: Worms Beneath the Roots and Ashes to Ashes?
Apr 27, 2025 5:34 pm
"Worms Beneath the Roots" may intrigue Lunareth, as Selûne is an implacable foe of the undead. He would be neutral on "Ashes to Ashes", however. It wouldn't interest him but if he ends up in a party which has great interest, he wouldn't automatically leave.

Every Divine Blessing is diferent, so we need to create an initial (non-exaustive) spell list for Luna in this thread. =)

I would like to have the final word (specifically about mechanics and gameplay changes) but will let the flavor, description, goals and effects of your spell list be created by you. It's more fun that way, I guess. =)

If you have access to the D&D Player's Handbook, take a look around the cantrips and cleric spells of level 1 for inspiration. Gimme your initial wishlist and we will work together on it. You can also see Briar's spell list here. Note that his spells are generally stronger, since he "spent" two Traits to obtain it.

We can add more spells down the line as well, so you don't need to include everything but the kitchen sink now. =)

Here are my first suggestions:

Spell Effects Test
MoonlightYou touch an object and cause it to emit a soft, silvery glow reminiscent of moonlight, bathing a 10-foot radius in gentle, magical illumination (with an additional 20 feet of dim silvery light beyond that). The glow carries a cool, calming quality, offering light but no heat or harm. Completely covering the object with something opaque obscures the glow. The moonlight does not blind, harm, or disturb. It lasts for about an hour or until you choose to dismiss it. Test if you target an object held or worn by a hostile creature. Otherwise you succeed. Can only be cast once every hour, no matter the result.
Selûne's Blessing Can only be used in combat. A weapon you touch becomes imbued with silvery lunar energy. Don't Test. Instead, just spend an action to cast this spell. Your or your allies' next attack with the blessed weapon gains Focus.

Looks good. If I can add one more to the available list, I would suggest something based on Guidance, to allow for Focus on a non-martial test. Those three together with the ranged attack would be great, especially for a 1st level character. Would that work?

Sure! Feel free to add all of them to your character sheet in a new section.

Spell Effects Test
GuidanceYou touch one willing creature and roll a Magic Test. If you succeed, once before the scene ends, the target gains Focus in a single Test. Cannot be used in Combat. If you fail, you cannot try casting Guidance again until you complete a long rest.
