An Odd Opportunity? (For the new players.)

Apr 26, 2025 5:55 pm
FORNICE/Mora/Spinward Marches. High Port, orbital spaceport. "Spacers Guild" Hiring Hall.
1600 on April 6, 1115.

The Spacers Guild at Mora is one of the largest in the sector. Second only to Mora itself. It takes up an entire 'block' in a prime location on mid-deck 'Minus Three', just under the deck used primarily for docking high-capacity Freighters and Subsidized Merchants. It's a working-class deck, with Trade Schools, Basic Shopping, Tri-Vid Theaters, a moderately famous Geisha House, and a smattering of decent quality restaurants and taverns. An area of the large station frequented by Spacers, but very much respectable without being luxurious. Basic, decent, fair-priced goods and services.

There are somewhat more than a dozen 'active' hiring booths. Merchant-Guild affilitates, mostly MegaCorporations. And the digital bulletin boards, of course. Again dominated by Mega-Coporation openings. Most ads looking for Able Spacehands and Trainees. A few for 4th-Officers. Absolutely nothing particularly interesting unless you're wanting back into the rigid, controlled, corporate culture. Steady work, but lacking excitement. Interest. Opportunity. No one will get rich working the corporate lines.

There's a good number of job-seekers in circulation. Not a huge crowd, but enough that there are lines in front of two or three of the hiring stations. There are plenty of free comp-stations, though.

A pair of Vargr Spacers are moving towards the exit to the cafeteria. One is talking rather loudly, and you can't help but over-hear: "Well Gashgroer, that was a collasal waste of time! Nothing interesting, just all the same corporate slavery! Makes me almost wish I'd taken to the Corsair life!"

'Gashgroer' answers just as loudly: "Good thing you didn't do that, pal. You'd be dead by now!

"But say, I was waiting to tell you. There's a rumor going; a ship that was re-possessed from 'skippers'. It's got a bad reputation now. But the bank is looking to sell it off, and has buyers lined up. 'Athabasca', maybe its name, don't know. But they're dirtside, at Two-A. That's what I heard. Want to go down in the mud with me and find out more?"

The rest of what they say is lost as they pass through the hatch leading to the cafeteria...
OOC:
You could follow the two and try to strike up a conversation. You could use your personal comm unit to look up what you can find about the 'Athabasca' or any news of a repossed ship. Or take a chance and head immediately dirt-side to Two-A on the next Shuttle. Or something else, maybe?

Standing in line, Rin's ears perk at the mention of the ship. He takes a look around to the others standing in the hiring line, trying to discern if anyone else had picked up on the conversation. He will slyly try to pull out is comm unit to find some information while he abandons his position in the line to follow towards the cafeteria. He tries to lag far enough behind where his limp from his bad knee won't draw obvious attention.

Standing in line, Rin's ears perk at the mention of the ship...
There's no ship "Athabasca" in the recent news feeds...., but there's some big stories from a couple of weeks back about a ship named the "Athelstone". The big news event was a near disaster with its Low Berths; somethng about a cascade-failure that effected 8 of the 10...

But the ship's crew and emergency responders made heroic efforts and no lives were lost. You see that additional information describes the ship as belonging to the First Bank of Fornice, and that it had been re-possessed from a crew that had tried to skip out on its mortgage. An agent name of "Recherrek" managed to bring the 'skippers' to justice, and with a cobbled together crew got the vessel back to Fornice not long ago.

'Wiki' type articles inform you that a bank will usually refurbish and then offer-for-sale a reposses ship as quickly as they can. An empty ship makes no one any credits. Its likely that a ship with a 'bad reputation' like the Athelstone might be on the market for well below its 'book' value... If someone had an inside track to make an offer.

Alice had become increasingly despondent wandering the hiring hall. Perhaps you should try the Geisha House?, she mused to herself before dismissing the idea as somewhat ridiculous ... at 30 you're already too old, girl...

She saw the the pair of Vargr before picking up on their conversation. ...perhaps thats the sign you've been waiting for?

"What the hell", she said aloud before pivoting on her heels and almost colliding with the grey-haired limping man walking behind the Vargr. "Oh, excuse me! I'm so sorry", she said smiling before heading off for Two-A.
Apr 27, 2025 4:41 pm
It turns out the ground 'port' of 2-A, near the Arcology-city of Port-au-Prince, runs hourly but Alice misses the boarding 'window' by about 5 minutes. "Sorry" the gate agent says. "Here, take tickee, you first in line next shuttle."

The agent is a very short human, strongly built, gender non-obvious. Possibly a heavy-grav gene-mod; no way to tell for sure. Their name-tag reads "Leslie". They are in the uniform of the Imperial Starport Authority.

"You can stay here in the boarding lounge if you like. There is kaffe, donuts, and quantip (a local salty crispy snacky thing) at the vend-booth over there." The agent is being unusually helpful...
Apr 27, 2025 6:47 pm
"Just my luck!", Alice says raising an eyebrow. "But, thank you for the ticket.... Leslie. I will wait, and perhaps get a hot drink."

This is intended as an opportunity for the 'new' player-characters to meet up with one another. And perhaps get information from other passengers as they arrive... more to come!

For the first time in twenty years, Leilani could take her time wandering around the Guild displays like she was a rookie on her first day at Highport. She'd picked up a large tub of local food that looked and tasted (mostly) like pop chicken and listened to Aslan Acoustic in her earbuds.

They always kept these places so cold, she mused to herself, even her oversized parka with patches of the 73rd Fleet wasn't keeping her warm enough, so she'd made her way to the canteen for a warming drink.

"Oh hey, what's happening here?" she asked, inserting herself between the two humans, apparently watching some Vargr arguing "Meat balls anyone? They're very moreish, I assure you!"
Apr 28, 2025 11:15 pm
At the entrance to the cafeteria The two Vargr (one apparently named Gashgroer) step back away from the human 'Leilani', one of them growls and his neck fur rises in reaction. The other holds up both arm-paws and says: "Umm hey, we're going to get some vat burgers, that's all. Not looking for any trouble...or meatballs!"

The two humans, one dark-complexioned and very tall male, and the other a shorter, muscular female. Step away, too. Both wear worn dungarees, faded except for shoulders where old ship-crew patches have been recently removed.

The male says to Leilani: "Sheesh, Lady! What's yer problem? We're just going for kaffe and a snack and you push right past us. I should call security!" The woman has her comm-unit in hand and it looks like she may doing exactly that!

MEANWHILE

In the shuttle boarding lounge, waiting for the hourly scheduled trip down to '2A'. Alice watches as two more people wander in and check with the agent, Leslie. After a moment of talk with her, they move to the vendors outside and come back equipped with disposable cups, the pleasant odor of kaffe (almost coffee!) wafts over.

Two women in business attire, both looking 40-to-50 standard years in age. They settle in and each sips kaffe while perusing their comm-units.

"Melody, you see this?" One asks the other. "Looks like that repossesed ship is up for sale.... No, wait. It says they already have a buyer. That was quick. I suppose that 'skip-tracer' Recherrek has something to do with it."

Melody responds with a grunt, looks up from her device. "That damned Droyne gets their snout into everything. What a reputation. But yeah, if anyone could get the bank to make a cozy deal for themselves or their friends, they'd be the one to do it."

Rin was last seen looking over information on the planetary info-web. Does he have additional queries? Or will he be heading down to 2-A ground port as well?
Apr 29, 2025 3:00 am
Rin muses at the prospect of a new ship for only a moment. A fresh start. Or at least one that can take him far away.

Seeing the two Vargr interrupted by the woman, Rin turns back away to heads into the shuttle lounge as well. While waiting for the shuttle to arrive, he’ll grab some Kaffe while doing a quick check to see if he can find any records of previous turn around ships the First bank has sold off to get an idea of what the cost might be.

Her tiny 1.55m (5'1"), whilst great as an engineer, it meant she was never going to be capable in a fight. Besides, she'd always relied on her wits to get out of trouble, though it was obvious that they'd let her down already!

"No you are right and I'm sorry..." honesty was a good option here "... just demobbed and I'm not used to things yet!"

She sat down cross-legged on a handy bench, hand in her lap, looking (hopefully) suitably chastised.

"But if that's not enough, I'll just sit here and wait for security!"
Apr 29, 2025 11:27 am
The businesswomen's conversation piqued Alice's interest, and she rose from her lounge seat and headed over to where they sat heads bowed over comm-units.

"Sorry to interrupt, ladies, but might I ask if that Kaffe is any good?", Alice asked politely. "Oh, and please forgve me, but I heard you mention that a Droyne you appear to know had just bought a repossessed ship? Truth be known I overheard another conversation about the 'Athabasca', I think they said, that had also been repossessed. I couldn't help but wonder if they were one and the same ship. You don't mind my questions do you? I'm not long out of the merchant service and I'm looking for work that might leverage my contacts. I'm 2nd Officer Alice Petrov by the way, nice to meet you", Alice held her hand out to the women and beamed a smile as bright as dawn towards them.

The woman using her comm unit looks up and then seems to change her facial expression from irritated to neutral-apologetic. "Yes? You've just left service? Must have been stressful..., even though the war's been over awhile. I'll try to cancel my security call..."

Too late. A dark-haired robust-looking Vilani-ancestry type woman arrives, dresssed in 'Starport Authority Blues' and probably discreetly armored under the uniform. She has her hand on a stun-pistol mag-stuck to her harness. She looks first to the woman who called, who apologizes for perhaps over-reacting, but points out Leilani anyway.

The guard moves over to the bench, and she glances at her wrist-comp for a moment. "Baron Nekali? You seem to have arrived at Fornice Main Port unannounced. Do you require an escort, ma'am? I'm sorry you were not met upon arrival."

The two 40ish-looking women look to Alice with curiosity. The one you heard called Melody introduces herself, and her companion 'Nuwa'.

Rin enters the lounge about then, in time to hear Nuwa laugh and say: "Starport kaffe, not too bad really. So, going down to 2-A, Port-au-Prince? Big city-arcology, but a small port. Not much there other than the Bank of Fornice's ship facility. You have anything to do with that repossed ship that's being sold? A friend of that Droyne, Recherrek, maybe?"
Apr 29, 2025 9:08 pm
As Melody speaks, an alert on Alice's comm-unit activates, and she steals a quick glance... Help Wanted – Crew for Athelstone ... 200-ton Far Trader.... working ship: profit-driven.... Positions Available:... -Broker – ... find deals... negotiate...

"Oh, no, I don't know 'Captain' Recherrek, is it? What can you tell me about him, he might be interested in employing me?".

Alice pulls a chair from a nearby table and positions it between Melody and Nuwa. "Nice to meet you, both, by the way... please do go on"
Apr 29, 2025 9:30 pm
The two women in business attire look at each other, possibly sharing some sort of inside joke, smiling.

Melody says: "Ah, good ol' Decherrek. Not a Captain, though. And not hiring anybody as far as I know."

Nuwa takes a sip of Kaffe and adds in explanation: "That Droyne works for..., well, that's not it exactly. They're a contract-employee with the First Bank of Fornice. When a ship's crew stops making payment on their bank loan, Recherrek goes after them. A 'skip tracer'. They sometimes hire 'muscle' if they need to when taking back a ship. And then Recherrek hires temporary crew to get the reposessed ship back here. Interesting character, for a reptilioid. Fancies themself some sort of scholar, too. Reposessing ships is a way of studying human economics, according to them."

Meanwhile Melody has been looking at her comm unit, and looks up. "Well, if you're looking to crew that ship, looks like they're already advertising. LC Rains! Now there's a name to conjure with. He was on the infonews a while back, wasn't he? He and that celebrity surgeon...what's her name?"

Merchant Guide Network wide crew hire posting

------Begin Message--------

🚀 Help Wanted – Crew for Athelstone 🚀

Seeking sharp, reliable, and somewhat daring individuals to join the crew of the Athelstone — a 200-ton Far Trader, Beowulf-class lineage, customized for versatility and long-haul independent operations.

We’re a working ship: profit-driven, opportunity-savvy, and aiming to keep flying no matter what the void throws at us. If you know your trade, can keep your head, and don’t mind a little gray around the edges of the law now and then, we want you aboard.

Positions Available:
-Steward – Manage supplies, keep passengers happy, knowledge of low berths essential, handle small crises before they become big ones. Bonus points for a steady hand with a tray in zero-G.

-Broker – We need someone who can find deals, negotiate cargo contracts, and occasionally talk our way out of a bad port fee.

-Mechanic – Systems maintenance, jury-rigging miracles, and a willingness to get very greasy. Must be able to swear creatively at stubborn drives.

-Pilot – Precision flying essential. "Close enough" won't cut it on a grav assist or a dodgy docking maneuver.

Requirements:
Moderate experience preferred — but talent, good instincts, and loyalty mean more than paperwork.

No outstanding warrants that would cause serious diplomatic incidents.

Must be willing to work as part of a tight crew. Divas and loners need not apply (unless you're very good).

Perks:
-Fair shares in profits.
-Room, board, and a ship that’ll treat you better than most ports.
-Travel across the Spinward Main and beyond.
-Occasional hazard pay (negotiable).

Interested?

Message the Athelstone's crew manifest office and ask for LC on comms band 5147.AV or Look for the Athelstone dockside at Bay 14.

What can you tell me about LC Rains? The better informed I am at interview.... well, if I get an interview that is... the better informed, the better chance of making a good impression, I suppose."

Melody says: "I don't know the man personally, you understand. Just by reputation. He's been all around the Marches, though. Was involved in some sort of publicity voyage way back before the 5th Frontier War. Some ship that had an experimental A.I. in its computer. They even had some sort of 'reality vid show' thing going, if I remember rightly."

Nuwa nods in agreement. "I think he's some sort of lawyer these days. Kind of an ambulance-chaser, if you know the trope? Isn't he involved somehow with that underworld character, uh, Smugg somebody or other. Weird alien from a species nobody's ever heard of."

Melody: "A wheeler-dealer for sure. Always looking for an angle. If he's part of this ship deal...., well it would be interesting. That's for sure!"

"Yeah, a lot has changed..." Leilani gave a little sigh. You stop one little reactor overload and save one Duke, and suddenly everything changes.

And the guard's reaction was just one of those things; she stood, probably looking to all the world like a small deflated child.

"I must have forgotten to inform you on arrival..." Naval ships overcame a lot of questions on arrival "... These nice people were helping me after I got a little turned around!" She didn't want anyone to get in trouble over her goofs; she wasn't anywhere near that vindictive.

She looked around for an option, deciding the shuttle was the best option to get lost in the big city for some peace and quiet.

"I don't want any special treatment. If you want to escort me to the shuttle lounge, I'll get out of your hair!"

Alice sat back into her chair and inclined her head in thought. "A most peculair gentleman this LC Rains, seems. An odd opportunity indeed!" She remains in silent thought for a moment until she feels Melody's and Nuwa's gaze upon her. "Oh, I'm sorry... lost in thought there for a moment. Ladies, I can't thank you enough for sharing with me. Much appreciated. I shall leave you in peace and go and grab a Kaffe before the shuttle arrives"

With a broad smile and firm handshakes, Alice begs her leave and heads for the vending machines.

"Your choice, my lady. We are here to help, not to impose." The security guard gives the slightest of bows (not to draw further attention) and then moves away, but lingers in sight some distance away.

NOTICE
Not to 'short' roleplaying opportunities, but I'm going to go ahead and fast-forward the game to a point where the new 'crew' and the ongoing crew have a chance to interact.

Not closing down this thread, so further 'action' here is OK. Just it will be a small time-warp behind the ongoing story.

Alice Petrov, Leilani Nekali, and Rin Bauer have gotten seats on the Shuttle-craft down to subsidiary starport 2-A, which serves the Arcology-city of Port-au-Prince on Fornice. Arriving they find a bare-bones transport facility with only a few amenities. But there is a high-speed rail line to take arriving passengers quickly to the city which is visible towering over the jungle growth in the distance, with ocean waters beyond.

At Port-au-Prince the whole gamut of accomodations are available, from luxury hotel-resorts in the highest spires, to more modest and utilitarian 'digs' in the mercantile and financial districts. And there is a share of cheap and basic hotel and hostel rooms catering to workers and spacers. Something for everyone.

It isn't until the next day that applications sent over comms make their way to the new ship's owners. Perhaps you will get prompt responses. Who knows?

Scene: Downport 2-A, Bay 14 — Port-au-Prince Arcology

The Athelstone rests in Bay 14, her hull bearing the marks of countless jumps and atmospheric entries. The 200-ton Far Trader, a modified "Beowulf" class, showcases reinforced landing struts and additional sensor arrays—testaments to her storied past and recent upgrades. The ship's matte-gray exterior contrasts with the bustling, neon-lit environment of Downport 2-A, where the scent of ionized air mingles with the aroma of nearby food stalls.

Inside the Crew Common Room

The common room of the Athelstone is utilitarian in design, but undeniably lived-in — the kind of space where deals are made, arguments had, and midwatch coffee is sacred. It echoes the practical layout of a naval galley, reminiscent of the crew spaces aboard the legendary Beowulf: tight but efficient, with reinforced bulkheads, magnetized mugs, and ceiling rails betraying the ship’s zero-g compatibility.

A central table is bolted to the deck, surrounded by fixed seating, all scuffed with years of wear. Wall-mounted display panels flicker between ship diagnostics and star charts. Personal touches have crept in over time: a faded pin-up from a spacer calendar, a magnetic dart board (clearly abused by Bronz), and a Vargr paw-scratched plaque that reads, "If you can’t fly it, don’t touch it."

A compact galley unit hums softly in one corner, where Said Ma insists on actual brewed caf — no powdered substitute nonsense — and where the smell of ration-spiced stew occasionally fights with ozone and engine oil for dominance.

It’s not fancy. It’s not sleek. But like the rest of the Athelstone, it’s got soul — and it runs on the trust and friction of its crew.

Interview Panel:

LC Rains: Ship's Legal Counsel, Navigator and acting Quartermaster, impeccably dressed, exuding a mix of charm and authority. He is wearing glasses that are obviously too large for his face as if he is trying to appear knowledgeable or smart.

Bronz: Engineer, arms crossed, eyes sharp, occasionally jotting notes on a datapad.

Said Ma: Medic and Steward, offering a calm presence, with a slight smile and attentive gaze.

Tharrok: Vargr Pilot, leaning back, tail flicking occasionally, observing with keen interest.

Tamm: Crewmember, demeanor neutral, evaluating each applicant carefully.
OOC:
Any of the players can change the appearance of their character - and please do if I am not capturing the 'look' right
Applicants:

Rin Bauer – A seasoned spacer with a confident stride, eyes scanning the room with practiced ease.

Alice Petrov – Composed and analytical, hands clasped neatly, posture straight.

Leilani Nekaii – Radiating enthusiasm, eyes bright, occasionally glancing at the ship's interior with admiration.

"Lu-Yam" Yamamoto – Broker, presenting a portfolio on a sleek datapad, demeanor professional.
OOC:
The same for all of the new players, please change any description I have incorrectly written to what you want your character to look like
LC Rains leans forward, steepling his fingers.

"Welcome aboard the Athelstone. As you've likely gathered, we're a crew that values competence, adaptability, and a touch of flair. This isn't just a ship; it's a venture, a livelihood, and occasionally, a tight squeeze through less-than-legal airspace."

He gestures to the panel.

"My colleagues here represent the core of our operations. Bronz ensures we don't fall apart mid-jump. Said Ma keeps us patched up and well-fed. Tharrok gets us from point A to point B with minimal incidents, and Tamm... well, Tamm ensures we don't do anything too foolish."

LC's eyes scan the applicants.

"We're looking for individuals who can not only perform their duties but also mesh with our crew's dynamic. So, let's begin. Who wants to tell us about a time you had to make a split-second decision in the void."
OOC:
Please feel to introduce your character and I hope this does not scare anyone away.
May 2, 2025 5:40 pm
As the applicants present their credentials, Mama nods her approval to LC for those she feels would be appropriate for the ship and scowls her disapproval of those she does not approve of.

Once applications are approved, Mama introduced herself.

"Welcome to the crew! I'm very pleased to meet each one of you and hope to get better aquatinted as we travel through the deep dark. As the chief medic, I ask you upload your medical profiles so that I can treat each of you appropriately. Remember that your medical records are classified and I am not permitted to release that information without an imperium court order. So that information is protected and considered safe "

"As for stewardship, I ask each send me a text for any special dietary needs or requests that will make your stay with us more pleasant. Human and Varg needs have already been loaded, along with a selection of treats and drinks."

I have already started to look into loads for our next journey to (Pending location) which has been suggested by our current crew. If any of you have a better suggestion, I can readjust any purchases, as no orders have yet been completed.

(Transfered from prior post)
With the next destination selected and agreed upon (assuming this will actually occur) Mama starts punching in searches and requests for cargo, speculative options, high passage , and low births.

Mama has +2 for computers & +1 education. LC added +1 help

Rolls
Cargo - (2d6+2)
(3+6) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 13

Speculative options - (2d6+2)
(5+2) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 11

High passage - (2d6+2)
(4+4) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 12

Low birth - (2d6+2)
(6+4) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 14

(Color and Roll play to be added upon identifying what was found in the search and clearly identifying available funds)

OOC:

Just a suggestion to move this along.

We had 4 positions posted: Pilot (which we removed after posting), Steward, Mechanic, Broker

Rin - Fills the Mechanic position
Lu-Yam - Fills the Broker position

Both Rin and Lu-Yam have Steward skills so we can figure out how that will help.

Alice - Will convince us that we need a computer expert/hack :)
Leilani - Finds out that we no longer need a pilot but we get convinced to have a 2nd Pilot / Navigator to fill in as needed (such as Bronz is the 2nd Engineer)

"...and Tamm... well, Tamm ensures we don't do anything too foolish."

Tamm gives a flash smile that doesn't reach his eyes.
He looks over at Bronz and nods his head.

"Tamm also Chief Engineer but Bronz does most of the work", Tamm rumbles in his deep voice.

He looks over each applicant's credentials on his own beat up tablet then gives LC a small nod.

Tamm is wearing faded ship's coveralls with the top tied around his waist. His T-shirt features an ad for Oaty-fruity bars. Every time Tamm takes a breath the cartoon takes a bite of an Oaty-fruity bar, her breasts enlarge until she explodes. The sequence starts over again. On the back a large octopus holds eight bars. Every time Tamm breaths, the octopus eats an Oaty-fruity bar. The empty tentacle is refilled on the next breath so it looks like the octopus is continuously eating the bars. Both sides have Oaty-fruity Bars as a header.

Comments?
OOC:
Alice was "re-invented" as a 2nd Officer Merchant with a +2 Broker rating. It's fine if the Computer Expert is a better fit, though, or I can try and re-roll a different set of skills that better meets the crews needs.

Suggestions? I'll go last in the interview to allow players to suggest the best role for Alice

Missed that Alice had been re-invented as a broker. That could work so long as Lu-Yam is fine as Steward.

In any case my point is that we will figure out a reason why we are all here and make it work. Everyone still has a position with this crew.

Bronz stays quiet as Tamm speaks, arms folded across his chest. Different ship, yeah—but some things felt a little too familiar. At least here, he didn’t have to watch his back in the dark or sleep wedged between crates.

Now he even got a say in who he worked with—something he wasn’t used to. He wasn’t sure how to judge people, not really, so he just nodded along when the others seemed sure. As long as the candidate looked competent, that was good enough for him.

He kept his expression blank, only tapping at his datapad when it seemed expected—watchful, but letting the others lead.

GM NOTE: On a small 'Far Trader' its a luxury to have duplicate crew for the various essential positions. Luxury, but potentially helpful to the bottom line especially if the ship is operating on a shares in lieu of salary basis. With more people probing around for lucrative cargo the chances of finding such are increased.
A second GM note: Speculative Cargo can be looked for at any time. Freight and Passengers cannot be contracted for until a destination (flight plan) is filed with the Port Captain's Office. I would suggest looking at potential destinations within J-2 of Fornice and deciding on that before other commercial activity.

I will start a seperate thread for 'trading' soon. Watch For It!

Tharrok sat at the table as LC began the process. He watched each of the prospective new crew members as introduced themselves and answered preliminary questions. He let, not just their words, but their body language and even their scents tell him about each one. He asks a few questions just designed to get each one to open up about themselves a bit, though not necessarily related to being a crew member.

"When was the last time you returned to your homeworld and how did you feel when you were there? And how did you feel when you left again?"

Tharrok leaned forward and steepled his fingers as he listened to their answers.

"Why do you feel this ship, this crew, is the right place for you? What unique quality or qualities do you feel you would contribute to the ship and crew?"

Tharrok smiles with a genuine friendliness and encourages the applicants to just relax, his questions are not a test. He doesn’t tell them he is, in part, looking for signs of or lack of signs that they may be uncomfortable with anyone on the ship.

"I don't think I've been demoted so fast since I punched an Admiral... well, it was more of an enthusiastic push!" she didn't sound overly bothered that she had gone from a potential position of a Chief Engineer, to the backups, backup

"If I can speak my mind, and you're going to get that anyway, that and complete honesty..." she counted both off on her thin fingers. "You don't need me; you've got a perfectly solid crew already. Now, the other two here, I'm sure, are useful!" Leilani gestured at what she assumed were the other new recruits.

"But I really need to be back in space, where I'm a nobody again, so I'll sign on and do what needs to be done. Heck, not like I've scrubbed my share of manifolds before..." taking a breath, she thought before adding

"Oh, and I tend to ramble and babble a lot when I start talking... I should probably work on that!" she counted out a third finger.
May 3, 2025 2:54 pm
Bronz hadn’t planned on saying anything during the interviews, just watching and letting the others take the lead. But something in Leilani’s words struck a chord. He remembered how he’d kind of barged onto the ship himself when they hadn't been looking for crew—and how they’d let him stay.

"Give her a chance," he said quietly, looking straight at Tamm recalling their first meeting. "I’m sure we can find work for her."

He’d meant to add that she had his vote, but stopped short, feeling like he might’ve already said more than he should.

Alice smiles warmly and makes eye contact with each member of the panel, then responding to Said Ma, she says "Thank you for your kind words, Chief Medic. I'm Second Officer Alice Petrov."

Alice turns to the Vargr Pilot and tilting her head slightly says, "well, those are good questions indeed! My mother always said I was born to travel the stars. I haven't been back home since I joined the Merchant Service. Both my parents have passed beyond this mortal veil and I have no siblings. The very thought of going home causes my chest to tighten in panic!". Alice placed her hand on her chest and breathed deeply as if to simulate the onset of a panic attack, but then laughed gently before continuing;

"It is hard for me to answer your second question as honestly and fully as I would like at this time. I simply don't know enough about the crew. However, what I will say is that your Chief Medic exudes a care and love that is most reassuring. You exude a stoical and professional aura, and judging by this gentleman's intercession on the part of my fellow applicant, it suggests that you prefer a consensual management style that encourages each of the crew to contribute according to their abilities and personal perspectives. Oh, and I've heard some interesting stories about Mr Rains! My instant assessment, albeit based upon first impressions and hearsay, is a very positive one. For my part, my Merchant background and the network of contacts I have acquired over two terms of service are the chief assets I bring to the table. I believe you will find me to be a good source of opportunity and a competent negotiator.... Oh, one more thing - I am highly motivated! Or to put it in more visceral terms - I am aching to become filthy rich! "

Repost in better thread:

Tamm poses some questions to the applicants:

- "Why do you want to join this crew?

- What are your strengths and weaknesses?

- What kind of work environment do you thrive in?

- Tell us about a time you overcame a challenge.

- Tell us about a time when you had a disagreement with the Captain. With a crew member(s)?

Scene: Athelstone Crew Common Room — Closing the Interviews

LC stood from his seat with the air of a barrister about to give closing arguments before a mildly confused jury.

He looked across the room — the glow from the overhead LEDs reflecting off brushed steel and modular plasteel panels, shadows curling beneath the benches of the Rocinante-style galley. It smelled faintly of caf, ozone, and whatever Tamm had nuked in the reheat unit before the interviews began.

He tapped his tablet with two fingers and turned toward the crew gathered around the common room table.

"Right then — that about wraps it. We've heard pitches, banter, philosophical musings, and at least one emotional breakdown with excellent comedic timing." He gave a warm nod to Alice. "You’ve all been splendid."

He walked a slow circle behind the table as he spoke, every step just this side of theatrical.

"Let’s be frank — we’re not just looking for warm bodies with certs. We're looking for crew. That’s a difference you feel more than see."

He paused by Leilani, smirking.

"And while I appreciate modesty delivered with the subtlety of a hull breach — we do need folks who’ve been in the manifold, and aren’t afraid to speak their mind. Even if it comes out sideways."

His eyes flicked to Bronz, giving the man a nod. Bronz had barely said much, but what he had said carried more weight than most soliloquies.

"Crew backs crew. That’s the only rule we don't bend."

LC then swept a hand toward Alice and Lu-Yam.

"We’ve got firepower in negotiation, contacts in the Merchant net, and someone who can talk a decimal point into submission. That’s the kind of talent that turns starving into surviving — and surviving into profit."

With a dramatic flourish, he thumbed his pad and projected a small holographic chart showing the crew shares.

"You’ll each come aboard with one share in the Athelstone. It’s modest now — but so was this ship once, before we scrubbed the serial numbers and made her our own. Current crew holds the rest. That’s 14 in total, spread among Tamm, Bronz, Said Ma, Tharrok, and yours truly."

He turned the projection off and leaned in slightly, voice lowering just a touch.

"That means you're family now — with voting rights, profit shares, and unfortunately, chores. I suggest fighting over trash duty early so you can claim it's ‘your thing.’ Works every time."

He clapped his hands once and grinned.

"So — barring objections or dramatic betrayals, I say we close the interviews here and now."

He tapped a prompt on the datapad and turned to the others.

"Crew, cast your votes. One aye, one nay per applicant. Majority rules, and if you’re still chewing over it — remember, you were all green once too."

As each vote lit up green, LC looked toward the new recruits.
OOC:
Assuming all the current crew vote yes on all applicants???
"Congratulations. You’re in. Welcome aboard the Athelstone. Upload your med records to Said Ma, avoid Tamm’s shirts before breakfast, and for stars’ sake — don’t touch anything that’s humming unless Bronz tells you to."

He straightened up, running a hand through his hair like he’d just won a court case against gravity itself.

"Any final questions before we start earning enough credits to afford three square meals and a newer brand of disappointment?"

LC pauses for a moment and then states;
"One last thing, since we are rechartering the ship and will secure the loan with the bank, we have the options to rename the ship. TJ has thrown in a couple of names into the hat, but any of the crew can put forth a name. Lets take 24 cycles
OOC:
hours
to decide. Then we all vote on the new name. I need the name to legally character the ship and the transponder signal system. "
OOC:
Is there anything else I forgot before we accept the new crewmembers?

Lu-Yam get on the comms and says he's looking for work: His last gig was with Fornice Packet Service supporting luxury and special goods fulfillment. ("They ordered it; I found it, we sold it, made phat loot. Dude! It was so simple, too easy!") But I needed to move on to better challenges and more interesting opportunities. He has four years as a broker and can also work as a nurse/medic if necessary, and it’s barely worth mentioning that he has certifications for electronics, gunnery and steward. I can print out a CV and references if necessary. "Wanna see the cool broadsword they gave me for my retirement party?"
May 4, 2025 9:03 pm
OOC:
just saying that much to another human being has Lu-Yam starting to sweat.
May 4, 2025 11:39 pm
LC to Lu-Yam;
"Interesting line of work. Glad to have you on the crew" LC smiles warmly

When Lu-Yam starts to mention the Broadsword;
"Uh....no need, I am positive it is a great knife, uh I meant Sword. Just make sure you check the thing in to the equipment locker when you check in." LC says with a smile

"Again glad to have you aboard!"
May 5, 2025 12:28 am
Lu-Yam sighs to himself that he has overcome the hurdle of first contact.. Um.... thanks for the opportunity.....Err, what now? Do I just board the ship? Err where is it? I'm so used to working in a system...uhh
May 5, 2025 12:42 am
OOC:
The interviews took place on the ship at berth but ....for Lu-Yam

"No worries my good man we at Downport 2-A, Bay 14, come to the airlock and meet the rest of the crew. Oh by-the-way, do you have any contacts for lucrative cargo for off world?"
May 5, 2025 1:20 am
New Thread coming up soon! I promise!
May 5, 2025 1:25 am
Seeing the broadsword made Bronz think of his old crew—sometimes, just showing you had teeth was enough to avoid a fight. But looking at Lu-Yam, it was clear he wasn’t built for that kind of blade. He’d never wield it right, not in any real scrap.

Still, Bronz’s eyes flicked toward LC. Maybe there were other ways to make a weapon like that useful—ways that didn’t involve swinging it.
OOC:

If Lu-Yam doesn’t mind what does everyone think of mounting the broadsword in a common area. Something to give the passengers to talk about and help make our ship stand out against the others. Originally, I was thinking that we could change the story at every port, but it is probably better to stick to one good story (i.e. for example we won/acquired the ship from a pirate).

We are also going to have to decide upon staterooms. The ship has 7 crew quarters so it looks like we will probably have to double up.

Bronz has no problem sharing a stateroom given he is used to bunking with the cargo from his old days.

Tharrok stand up and shakes out his fur (for a moment, his previously well-groomed fur fluffs up as if hit by hurricane-force winds) sending a few tufts flying before being stuck to his flight suit and then cleaned off by the self-cleaning mechanism in a brief but mesmerizing display. Running his hands down each arm, his fur settles down as if freshly brushed.

"Welcome to the crew! I look forward to flying the black with each of you.

Well, could be a set of wild circumstances involving an extended shore leave of the crew, a poker game and unexpected heart attack of the captain. You know the sort of story that sounds too good to be true but is... :)

I think if it sounds far fetching but that may be okay as if it sounded too real it might attract the wrong crowd.

In any case this is just one idea - someone else might have a better idea.

For any pirate story, if necessary Bronz can show his very real pirate tattoos, which up until now he tends to hide. But in this case if people don't believe the pirate tale they won't believe that he used to be pirate either, which helps him move away from his old life.

According to Book 2: Starships:
Quote:
In some starships (especially
exploratory vessels, military ships, and privately-owned starships), double occu-
pancy is allowed in staterooms. No stateroom can contain more than two persons
however, as it would strain the ship's life support equipment.
May 6, 2025 2:06 am
OOC:

We have 7 crew staterooms and 6 for passengers.

However, I looked over the ship's plans and it says we could double bunk in the captain's quarters and therefore we are only 1 crew over.

Perhaps, we can make this work with minimal strain on the life support and/or give up on 1 or 2 of the passenger staterooms (steward sleeps with the passengers for example).

4 passengers is still more than a typical free trader, so economically we may due fine.

Actually here is a quote from Wiki on the ship:

But you could conceivably carry a crew of '10' without using any of the High Passage cabins on the top deck.

Upon being welcomed into the grew, Rin gives us deep, "Hmmph. Well it'll be a pleasure working with you all. I look forward to getting to know everyone better." The Captain's Stateroom is built to serve as a 'double' at need. (Perhaps the Captain and their spouse/paramour/etc.) But it can be configured in a way that works for two crew. That means one crew (perhaps the Purser/Head Steward) could use one of the passenger staterooms. Decherrek will be aboard for a few jumps as well, and will pay full fare for another stateroom. Leaving 4 staterooms available for paying passengers. (Plus the 10 Low Berths of infamy...)

In order to take on passengers a 'flight plan (jump plan)' must be filed. You can't take passengers without a stated destination.

And... If Mama is simply checking the 'public' passenger boards the number of possible passengers would be limited. If she is doing something other than that it must be stated (and maybe roleplayed) how she is going about finding these passengers.

In a busy port like Fornice, there are dedicated Passenger Liners that are sucking up most of the passenger trade. Travellers can see the schedule of regular ships, check their reputations, and choose accordingly. A little Far Trader lacking reputation (or maybe having a negative one!) makes this relatively difficult.

As soon as the flight plan for Jokotre is filed by our Navigator, Mama posts the open beds and low passage slots available.

"The ~~ships new name~~ now has Transport to Jokotre
available!
4 Staterooms
10 Low passage
These spots will be filled per Fornice Port protocols
First come first serve"

Rate established by Fornice and will be adhered to.
(Rate to be listed)

Remaining unused slots will be reviewed later.

There is a steady passenger trade in worshippers/pilgrims to (and from) Jokotre. To be a "True Follower of Ram" a believer is obligated to make this pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime. The government invests quite a large percentage of their resources to fund subsidized space-liners to facilitate this.
